Hacks Episode 4.06 Thoughts
We’re back baby! While I’ve got some quibbles about the ep and some lingering complaints about the season arc, there’s a lot to love here! Popped it all below the “see more” to keep from spoiling the episode for anyone
Catharsis: while I do have a quibble (noted later) about the continuity/transition from ep 5 to ep 6, Ava’s breaking point within ep. 6 was so beautifully, painfully constructed—honed to a fine point of devastation at a hard-to-watch rock bottom—so much so that you could do nothing but cheer as she finally lost her shit and got her moment to scream it out. This is the kind of emotional tension building I love where the (relatively) mundane shit just cascades and cascades until Mrs. Table’s fake order is enough to send ya screaming at the staff and careening through the security gate. And I applaud her for it!
A Question of Competency: this season, I think the question has lingered for some viewers of whether Deborah was right—Ava is not equipped for this job—and for some viewers (mostly non-fans, given how deep the fandom’s love for Deborah goes) of whether Ava was right way back in season 1—Deborah is a hack, and her comedy will always threaten to revert back to that same old shit. But we’ve known from season 1 that they make each other funnier, better, that this was Deborah’s second chance at rekindling the kind of dynamic she thought she had and then lost with Frank. And we heard Ava put in such clear terms that the reason they work is because of their relationship—a thing that has notably been strained so heavily as to be essentially non-existent this season. One of my biggest frustrations with season 2 was that we kept being told that Deborah bombed on stage when she wasn’t talking to Ava and was refusing to work with her, but we never saw it, which lessened the impact and made some of the emotional fallout of that experience much harder to understand and find meaningful. This season, though, we’re seeing all the ways the fissure in their relationship is sending the show careening to last place. And while we’ve all been presuming the reasons behind this tailspin, there were two moments that really calcified the intentionality behind the writing here:
Ava scrambling with those 5 pages of jokes desperately trying to find the “best” ones because she doesn’t know what a Deborah who makes “wine o’clock” jokes thinks is funny. While Ava looks deeply, deeply bad at her job for a long, painful moment, we know why: Deborah has become alien to her! This Deborah is even worse than the one we met in the pilot, and Ava is flailing because everything she thought she knew about Deborah and what she finds funny and what she's striving toward in her comedy has flown out the window, leaving Ava on unstable ground.
Deborah acknowledging that she’s been setting Ava up to fail. This was a huge moment (more on it later), but I think in some ways, this is the line Ava needed to hear more than any of the rest of it. So much of Ava’s sense of self (like Deborah’s) is wrapped up in her work—something that’s true of a lot of people in creative and intellectual careers—so this loss of her most important relationship has also ballooned out into a loss of self, an unmooring from what’s made Ava who she is, the thing that saved her during a shitty, lonely adolescence (per the funeral ep). I’m still not sold that Deborah would willingly sacrifice the success of the show on the altar of petty revenge quite so knowingly and willingly as she has been, but at least the writers are finally making it unequivocally clear what they've been writing it as.
The Photo! We’ve all been waiting, but I don’t think any of us thought Ava had been keeping it at her side day in and day out, and I so appreciate the callback. But even more so, I appreciate that the discovery is a quiet moment without Ava's eyes on Deborah—it doesn’t change everything, but it does give Deborah this moment of insight into why Ava did what she did and who she’s (at least partially) doing this for. Ava’s told Deborah again and again (think most recently to the cop car), but I think this is the moment where we get to see Deborah finally start to believe it.
They’re a Couple, Your Honor: I love that Deborah shows up in a fur coat for pretty much all their most important emotional moments – you go, Carol! But anyway, I appreciate that, while there were some heavy-handed contrivances around getting them to the final scene, there were also some really important small notes in the lead up. Things like the way Deborah asks if they can just delay taping for half an hour because she actually doesn’t want to do it without Ava (because it’s always an audience of one, even when they hate each other); the flicker of concern for Ava even after just a few hours when no one else thinks to care much beyond the inconvenience of her disappearance; the melancholy notes when the show wraps; the pang of longing for what once was when Rosie’s talking about the joys of “sitting there laughing your ass off with some of your favorite people in the world”
it’s subtle and quiet and confirms exactly what we’ve hoped we’ve known this whole season: that even at her angriest, Deborah doesn’t want to be doing this without Ava either.
While Deborah’s dive into the ocean could have felt a little soapy and melodramatic, the callback to her knowledge that Ava can’t really swim helped quite a bit. Also, imo, it was a nice way to tether it to Deborah’s panic around responsibility (the “I should have protected you” whispered into Barry’s fur) because Deborah knows she taught Ava to float, but that’s not enough now, not for the fucking ocean—she told Ava she could do it on her own, but now Ava’s out there truly on her own, and Deborah knows she could have, should have done more. And it saves the moment from its own melodrama in really lovely ways. (Also tbc sometimes you just gotta take the soapy dramatic moments as they come! They can delight for good reason!)
Then their conversation on shore was so good because it felt achingly real. A lot of this season past the first episode or two has felt very focused on punchline-centric writing, but the raw emotions here felt not just like them—the them we know and love—but also true to where they are at the moment and have been in the past. It felt like the conversation you have with your long-term partner when you’ve been going through rough patches or the on-again-off-again situationship who’s too good to quit but also fucking you up in the head. And there were so many lovely callbacks!! “Right now you’re up” – the callback to their poolside convo at the hotel about ups and downs, highs and lows, Ava telling Deborah she’s climbing a mountain now, etc. etc. – all of it really lovely (and the kind of thing you get from a writer who was the show’s script coordinator in charge of continuity across eps lmao). Then telling Ava she can’t quit with the hint of a wink to the season 1 finale with the “you’re too good to quit.” So good. But most of all I like that it’s not easy. I like that we see Ava’s fragility, the cracks in her armor that we know Deborah has helped to put there, chisel by chisel, as she pleads with Deborah not to make promises she won't keep because Ava will believe them again and again because she wants to.
“We have to make it for each other” – yes. Finally. But Deborah needed to get there on her own; we knew we couldn’t just have Ava telling her that; she had to finally see it, feel that it was right.
And then it ends with them cackling at someone else’s expense making funny jokes together because that’s what’s fun, and that’s them, and that’s the only way forward.
Small Delights:
Those dykes in line for queer line-dancing night helping Deborah find Ava <3 I also love that Deborah has to ask for help to “Find my
” because she doesn’t have the right word for Ava anymore
Much like I find nothing hotter than Ava at rock bottom, I also find almost nothing hotter than Deborah Vance with mascara streaked across her face, sea-water-soaked hair drying in messy waves, clad in a gray hoodie and striped beach towel, perched on a chair, clutching a hot coffee cup at a shitty beach-shack restaurant. Genuinely so cute and hot all at once.  Idk man it just does it for me.
Quibbles:
Barry (or as my wife deemed him Bartholomew Vance) did NOT deserve that! Look, do I buy that anything happening to those little potatoes would break Deborah? Yes. Absolutely. Did it feel a little out of pocket to have a dog attack (even one that amounted to no physical harm) in my comedy?!? ALSO YES.
The transition from the end of episode 5 to this episode did not work. Ava looked angrier than we’ve ever seen her at the end of episode 5 (which I noted last week felt
off), only to show up looking worn down but still trying to be conciliatory toward Deborah with no overt anger. Hell, they’ve even got Dance Mom back on ALREADY AGAIN this episode, and not a single peep from Ava about it. Don’t get me wrong, the road we do follow to her breakdown feels authentic and right and real (and very much earned), but it makes the ending of 5 feel all the more off, like the writers dialed it up to 1,000 only to drop it down again for no reason. Again, whoever’s in charge of script continuity ain’t doing a great job this season. Which is how we get episodes that are wonderful but end up feeling a little bit like they’re not quite narratively earned (even as they’re earned in their self-contained way). But fingers crossed we’re on the up and up! Though I know we’ve got a lot of Jimmy, Kayla, and Dance Mom coming our way next week
I’ll be curious to see if they can better balance the A and B plots now that our A plot dyad isn’t fissured into competing lines.

New Fic: overtime (Hacks, Ava/Deborah; Rated: E)
Link
Fic Preview:
There is, technically speaking, a form that network employees are meant to complete notifying HR of things like changes in home address.
But Ava’s still paying rent at the Americana, still stops in and checks her mail and even picks up a cupcake to go now and then. She’s just not sleeping there is all. Or going there most days. Or eating her meals there. But if HR asks, she is absolutely still a resident of the Americana.
Because here’s the thing: Stacey would definitely misconstrue what it means that Ava is now crashing at Deborah’s house again. Not living there! Crashing. It’s a huge difference. Vital, really. For Ava’s sanity if nothing else.
Besides, she’s only got, like, four outfits max there at a given time. Really, there’s only so many times she can afford to buy her clothes back from Goodwill, even now that she’s saving an assload of money by not subsidizing the writers’ lunches. (She did—rather magnanimously, she thinks—put in a formal request for two mini fridges in the writers’ room to allow everyone to pack their lunches, which is way more environmentally sustainable anyway.) Four outfits does not a wardrobe make. It’s more of a luxury hotel situation over at chez Vance.
But Stacey might think there was something untoward about even a temporary change in address to the guest suite at the house of a woman she’s not allowed to speak to without administrative supervision.

Japan Box Office: Sailor Moon Eternal Film Part 1 Makes Its 9th Place Debut
The first part of the two-part anime film Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Eternal The Movie was released in 127 theaters in Japan on January 8, 2021. The number of theaters showing the film was less than half of that of a major film. Toei Animation's previous anime feature film Majo Minarai wo Sagashite (Looking for Witch Apprentices) / Looking for Magical Doremi, also distributed by Toei, had the same 127 theaters in its first weekend.
The 80-minute film made its ninth place debut in its opening weekend and its first-weekend gross has not yet been reported. It also ranked sixth in Filmarks' first-day satisfaction ranking with an approval rating of 3.46 based on 242 reviews. Its second part is set to be released in Japan on February 11, 2021.
Another new anime film of the weekend, Gintama THE FINAL was a box office and critical success. It was released in 197 theaters across Japan on January 8 and earned 287,493,500 yen (about 2.76 million USD) on 204,335 admissions on its first Saturday and Sunday to finally take over the top spot from Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train. The 104-minute film also ranked No.1 in Filmarks' first-day satisfaction ranking with an approval rating of 4.06 based on 1,267 reviews. It made 531,350,320 yen (5.11 million USD) on 384,220 admissions in its first four days, and is expected to end its domestic run with around two billion yen.
While dropping to second place for the first time in its 13th weekend, the total box domestic gross of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train had reached 35.7 billion yen (343 million USD). The film has continued to extend its record as Japan's top-grossing film of all-time.
Also, Seitokai Yakuindomo: The Movie 2, the second anime feature film inspired by Tozen Ujiie's four-panel school comedy manga Seitokai Yakuindomo, dominated Kogyo Tsushinsha's mini-theater ranking for two consecutive weeks.

April 2018 Blog Income Report: $38.29
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This post contains affiliate links, which means that if you click on one of the product links, I’ll receive a commission or other benefit at no additional cost to you. Thank you for supporting The Daily Change Jar. I am simply amazed at how quickly things can turn around when it comes to blogging. Making one little tweak on your site or writing a certain kind of post can completely change the game! So when I first started The Daily Change Jar I had a very specific goal in mind. I wanted to keep the site very gender neutral and not bring any personal branding into it, in case down the road I decided to sell the site. However, in an attempt to meet my goal of putting out 6 posts for the month of April, I went out on a limb and put together the 10 Frugal Dinners for When You're Broke post. Now, I personally love doing posts like this, for several reasons. They are quick and easy to write, I can write, publish, and promote it within a few hours (like during afternoon naptime). Which is great for that "quick win" feeling of actually getting something done! But I also love these types of posts because I also like to be able to promote other bloggers and be able to connect with them. So after publishing the 10 Frugal Dinners for When You're Broke I had a bit of an awakening. Within the first 30 days, this post alone got over 15,000 pageviews! You bet I looked like this lady when I was looking at my analytics! Considering the previous month I only had about 3,000 pageviews TOTAL! Originally I wanted to stay away from food and lifestyle posts, not that I have anything against them, but that wasn't my original vision for the blog. However, after seeing the stats for this post, I changed my mind. So after much consideration, I have decided to pivot the blog. I will be relaunching the blog with a snazzy new (more feminine) look, sorry guys ;-) But I hope the guys still stick around to read all of the great tips and tricks I have to offer on frugal living, saving money, and managing the money you already have, I'm looking at you Tyler!
Tumblr media
As a serious blogger, it's not always about what you want to write about, it's what your audience wants to see. Which I why I have decided to expand the blog a big and include more "frugal living" topics, such as food and kids activities.
Review of Blogging Goals:
April was awesome! I feel like I really got a lot of stuff done and have been expanding my network a lot more.  Publish 6 blog posts I got a total of 5 published, that that was pretty good.  6 Strategies to Start a Successful Side Hustle 10 Frugal Dinners for When You're Broke March 2018 Blog Income Report: -$10.53 27 Frugal Pantry Staples for Keep on Hand for Quick and Cheap Meals 25 Mother's Day Gifts for $25 or Less That She'll LOVE! Even though I did kit my goal of 6 posts, I am pretty darn happy with the 5 I did get published. Complete the Billionaire Blog Club Course I have a TON of more content to go through with this course. There is actually a lot more than I originally anticipated, which isn't a bad thing! The first thing I really worked on with the course was going through the Pinterest modules. Then I really started tapping into the community within the course. After I have completed the course I plan on doing a really in-depth review for those of you who are interested in investing in an awesome blogging course. I do highly suggest if you are serious about blogging that you invest in some kids of course.
Income
Ads - $25.50 Media.net - $7.29 Adsense - $18.21 I finally hit my $100 payout threshold for Adsense! No to play the waiting game to actually get paid! I'm still trying to figure out ways to increase my ad income. I'm kind of surprised with the increase in pageviews, from 3,000 to 8,000 my ad income only increased by like $4 :-(. Affiliates - $82.69 Smart Asset - $5.49 ShopStyle - $4.06 Amazon Associate - $3.14 Bluehost - $65 PrizeRebel - $5 Interested in starting a blog and now sure what to do for hosting? Check out my post here on How to Start a Successful Blog: The Complete Newbie Guide
Gross Income = $108.19
Not too shabby! I was super excited to see that Bluehost affiliate sale come through! So one of the things about Amazon Associates that makes them different from other affiliate networks is how their cookies work. The downfall is their cookies are only 24 hours. Meaning, if someone clicks through your Amazon affiliate link to purchase something but they back out and don't return within that 24 hour period, you lose the sale. The cool thing about it is that you can get a commission from anything the person buys within that 24 hours. So let's say that you link to a book that would normally net you about $0.50. Then that customer decides to spend $1,000 on that shopping tip on other random things. As long as it is within that 24-hour window, you get a commission for that sale! However, don't encourage all of your friends and family to shop through your blog's Amazon affiliate links. Amazon has some kind of magical way of figuring that out and will determine that sale invalid. (Trust me, I've tried) Rather, encourage them to sign up for Ebates and do their online shopping through there! Your referrals get a $10 bonus and you get a referral commission! Plus, Ebates totally encourages their users to share referral links with friends and family! Want to learn more about Ebates? Click here!
Pageviews
I was so freaking excited when I looked at my analytics this month!
Tumblr media
So I logged onto my Wordpress dashboard around mid-April and saw something I had never seen before. The site stats section had a HUGE spike in it. Now I had never really paid that much attention to that part of the dashboard because it never really changed. But once I had seen the sudden spike in traffic, I had to dive deeper into this to see what was going on! Come to find out, as I have already talked about, the 10 Frugal Dinners for When You're Broke post really took off!
Expenses
My expenses remain the same pretty much every month. Total expenses = $69.92 I did purchase the course I talked about above, the Billionaire Blog Club, which I did end up getting on sale for $157 for 3 payments. That might seem like a like to spend when I'm bringing in that much, but I feel it is totally worth it! I have made some awesome new connections from the group, and even though I haven't made it all the way through the course, I've already learned a lot. If you want to know why I use these specific programs, you can check out this income report when I go into them in a lot more depth.  Total Net income=$38.29
Blogging Goals
I really want to keep this momentum going! I am going to try to do a few follow up posts to the 10 Frugal Dinners for When You're Broke. I already started with Crazy Cheap and Delicious Iced Coffee Recipes. I am going to try and find a post rotation that will work well. For example, if I am posting 6 times per month there will be 1 blog income report, 1 post about blogging, 1 post about making money, 1 post about frugal living, and 1 food-related post. And of course, highlighting seasonal trends! It all goes back to that content calendar that I still need to make :-/. Rebrand the blog So I have decided to give the blog a much more feminine touch and pivot a bit more towards frugal living type posts. Those have by far been my most popular types of posts. I am also going to be redoing the homepage, so for when someone lands on the homepage, they know exactly what this blog is about and where they should go. Continue to work on the Billionaire Blog Club course As I said before, there is a lot more to this course than I realized. I am going to do my best to finish this as soon as I can, but I have mostly been watching the videos in the car while waiting to pick up the kids. Now that BMX season has started up again, there isn't much "down time" in our house! ButI try to maximize my time as best I can. I have also been working on setting my strategic plan and 90-day goals using Trello, which can take a bit to get used to, but has been pretty helpful!
Small and Big wins for April
I thought I would add this section because it's important in the blogging world to celebrate even the smallest of accomplishments. ➡ I started a little mastermind group with another blogger from Canada. We meet on Google Hangouts every other Tuesday for about an hour and a half (drink wine) and bounce our ideas off of each other. This has been SO helpful in keeping myself accountable and getting insights from another experienced blogger. Don't be afraid to go out on a limb to ask someone to be your business bestie, accountability partner, or be in a mastermind group with you. The worst they can say is no. ➡ I got some "viral traffic" ➡ I made a commitment to invest in my blog with the Billionaire Blog Club. I consider this a win because this is the first blogging course I have actually paid money for. Also, my husband has been so supportive in this journey and him letting me spend money when I haven't made a whole lot yet is a BIG WIN in my book!
