I swear I’m not overthinking things but how can I not when the Haikyu Stage play pretty much made it canon that Bokuto would carry Akaashi and shake him like a gumball machine whenever he’s excited or fired up
Like look at them in their pixelated sillyness:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Alternatively the one from the Tokyo Stageplay with Nekoma and Nohebi (yes this was during the ending but the actors were technically still in character):
Tumblr media
And now it got me thinking:
1. Bokuto is physically affectionate most especially towards Akaashi (his character has always been depicted to reach out towards other people as well like a high five or shoulder drape but the fact that he CARRIES AKAASHI, like Bokuto is there something you want to tell us?).
2. Akaashi is completely used, if not normal to Bokuto’s physical affection/touch.
3. The two of them are comfortable enough with each other to do something as stupid silly as that.
4. Potentially this is not the first time Bokuto has carried Akaashi nor is it the first Akaashi has been practically hugged and carried by Bokuto and they could in fact have done this so many times which means they’re always reaching out to the other.
Like have you not seen them during the animated Inarizaki match?
CAN YOU SEE HOW HARD IM BRAINROTTING RIGHT NOW-
(and it’s all because of this scene Im gonna yell)

This time I'm asking for Fukunaga with Illusion. One of my favorite songs.
Now playing... Illusion
word count; 1011 – f!reader, for my 1D x Haikyu event
Tumblr media
Going to a comedy show wasn’t necessarily within your idea of a perfect date, but going there with your actual date would have at least made it okay. Instead, you’re sitting alone in the audience, waiting for the comedian to come on stage any minute with an empty seat beside you. With your boyfriend’s track record, you should have known this would be no different.
You tried to enjoy the experience as the show started. However, no matter how funny this Fukunaga was, your bad mood was so evident on your face. Now and then, he’d get a laugh out of you, but you were on high alert when he started an advice session.
Some people asked him to interpret their dreams, while others asked him if their lactose intolerance was worth giving up chocolate milk. As he moved to your side of the stands, the way he looked at you twice gave you a brief warning before he spoke directly to you through the microphone. It didn’t register as a double take in your mind, but that’s probably because it wasn’t the first time he noticed you that night.
“What’s got such a beautiful girl hanging her head over here?” Fukunaga asked, tilting his ear towards you to ensure he could hear your answer.
You cleared your throat, looking to the side and seeing that most of the crowd were looking at you, expectantly. “I uh- I was going on a date with my boyfriend.”
Fukunaga bent down to jump off the small stage and walk over to you, but his eyes were locked on the empty seat beside you, and he held out his hand as if for a handshake. “I’ve never seen such realistic ghosting, man. Good job!” he joked, suddenly coming to a stop and looking at you when no one grabbed his hand. “He’s not very polite.”
You chuckled under your breath, somewhat bitterly. “He didn’t come.”
“Leave him! Dump him!!” came from the crowd, several women stepping up to have your back. Fukunaga’s reaction resembled a scared cat for a second before he laughed and waved his free hand as he walked back on stage.
“Hey, I’m the one giving advice!” he scolded jokingly before looking at you. He took a deep breath and shook his head. “My instinct is saying you should dump him and leave him.“ Some people laughed as he seemed to have taken their advice for his own.
You looked down, twiddling your thumbs. “He’s not that bad.”
“Exactly what every woman wants, I’ve heard.” Fukunaga pretended to twirl some hair around his finger and turned to the rest of the audience. “He should be tall, aaand not that bad!” Everyone laughed and you couldn’t help but join them. “Forget bad boys or nice guys, not that bad is all the rage.”
From there, another comment from the audience made the show keep flowing, and you could finally breathe a little. You looked at Fukunaga just a bit more starry-eyed now, actually managing to enjoy his jokes because a group of strangers had very clearly supported you in your case.
And it might have been your imagination, just an illusion when you felt like he glanced at you more often when saying his punch lines. It made you smile a little brighter, and laugh a little louder.
Then, all too soon, the show was over. The stage lights dimmed and the harsh reality of the ceiling lights woke you up from your delusions. You had let him use you for a good joke, and then you actually imagined anything he said was anything more than jokes. Illusions presented to the audience to enchant them.
When you walked outside, you took a deep breath and closed your eyes. Not only had your stomach fluttered with butterflies because of a man you didn’t know, but you had also not realised that if your boyfriend wasn’t answering his phone, he also wouldn’t come to pick you up.
Glancing at the clock, you also concluded that there wouldn’t be another bus until at least an hour from now, and started your long walk home. “Wait up!”
You automatically did, looking to the side where the comedian from the show slowed to match your pace. “Hi,” you greeted, a bit cautious as you glanced around to make sure you could see some other people.
“Hey,” he replied, tucking his hands in his pocket, a slight reassurance of his innocent intentions.
“You’re hilarious, I enjoyed your show,” you said, smiling at him in a way that made his neck flush.
“Thank you, I’m happy to hear.” He seemed to hesitate for a moment. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to seem creepy approaching you like this, but I really meant it. About your boyfriend.”
You turned a bit to look over your shoulder, wondering if the audience were all walking behind you, suspenseful as they waited for the joke. “I assumed that was just for the show.”
“The jokes were, sure,” he admitted, shrugging his shoulders. “But that doesn’t make the advice any less real. You’re way too pretty to go on dates without a date.”
That did make you laugh a little again. You almost couldn’t believe you had done that. “My relationship is the biggest joke I have,” you said, happy when he seemed to enjoy your humour. “I suppose you can’t be my date for your next show?” You pursed your lips the second you said it, wondering how that could slip from your lips so easily.
To your relief, he laughed. “The date would have to be before or after, hypothetically. But I promise I’ll show up,” he said and your laughs mixed into the excitement of something better.
Now the red flush spread to his ears and temples, while sneaking something out of his pocket. He handed you a little card, four of hearts, with his name and number scribbled on it.
“Let me know that you get home safe, will you?”
You read his name off the card and smiled softly. “Okay, Shohei.”
dearest @cottonlemonade and her brilliant mind helped me with this idea<3

Now that I’m watching beach volley, I must say that Kristen Nuss from USA reminds me of Ava 🏐 She’s so tiny, but one of the best players in the world!
oooh okay so anon when i saw this, my brain immediately split into 2 directions: beach and indoor/team volleyball.
beach would be incredible for Ava - at the beach! in the sun! one half of such an important partnership; being equal. the tricky part is figuring out her partner lol - like, she could partner anyone yknow?
as in, i feel she'd have an incredible dynamic with anyone she's with. like, with Mary - maybe a veteran Olympian - would have her back and trust her and ground her while also pushing her in different ways; with Lilith, i feel like they'd make a dangerously sharp and fiercely aggressive team (when they're not sniping at each other lol); with Camila they'd have this rapid pace and creativity, maybe also as a new pair/new generation bringing in a breath of fresh air into both their country's team and the sport in general; Beatrice of course would be such steady support for Ava's theatrics, though not to say that they wouldn't be risk-takers - for some reason i have them as the most unpredictable for opponents because of how much they trust each other.
team/indoor volleyball is something i've actually thought about before, but in terms of a Haikyu au.
[eta: omg this became so much rambling i'm so sorry anon, especially if you have no idea what i'm talking about but if you like volleyball, i encourage you to give Haikyu a chance!]
while i've seen some episodes/clips of the anime and stage plays and think both are fantastic, the manga is my true love. it's hands down my favorite sports manga and one of my top 5 manga of all time. i learned so, so much about storytelling and structure from this series; i think Furudate is all sorts of brilliant.
in terms of if i was to make a Haikyu au for WN, Ava would absolutely have to be Hinata because his love of volleyball and that voracious desire to learn. to me, his major character arcs come from working with a team and becoming a professional volleyball player. the former is perfect for the team aspect of WN, the latter would be wonderful to explore Ava's more serious side. as in, when something you love becomes something you dedicate your life to, where you find the most joy, where you become the best version of yourself.
ugh oh man the timeskip would be a beautiful analog to canon too, as in Ava coming back from the other side - stronger, more confident, and still in love with volleyball. a true "monster" lol as the ones who turned pro were called. plus there was that bit in the ending about the Olympics so this is in line with your prompt anon, i swear this isn't just me rambling mindlessly about Haikyu (tho it kinda is lol)
casting everyone else is hella tricky. though, i could get behind Camila as Nishinoya. she'd be a tad "lighter" in personality than Nishinoya but Cam does have that serious side to her and of course size-wise, she'd fit the libero position. Tsukishima immediately had me thinking of Lilith with all the shit he gives Hinata at the start and the f-ing brilliance of the Shiratorizawa match - oh man i still get shivers at that arc. also damn, that scene when he and Kiyoko have to go to the infirmary would be beautiful for Lilith too, having to trust her team to hold on. (i think i'mma have to reread ohno)
Mary feels very Daichi because captain/dad lol, i wonder if Sugawara could work as an analog for Shannon - his story is slightly different, since Sugawara gives the setter position to Kageyama (i.e. not Hinata/Ava) but still, that act of stepping back i feel would be close.
i have no idea who i'd cast for Tanaka - i'm not sure who'd be the sort of "everyman" analog from WN. the managers too are hard to cast - mostly because there's not a lot of folks to choose from lol - but also, who can possibly be as cool as Kiyoko?! ... well, Beatrice could lol, but that would mean i'd need to cast Ava as Tanaka because of course lol
speaking of Beatrice, i hesitate to cast her as Kageyama because though she'd be a brilliant setter, Beatrice's relationship with Ava is different from the antagonistic/rival aspect of Hinata and Kageyama's relationship, yknow? to that point, hm, Lilith would actually be fun in that position instead, especially with Kageyama's past and their similar ties to past folks/legacy of sorts.
which, then, Beatrice could be cast as Tsukishima, brilliant and strategic - doesn't think much of Hinata/Ava at first, develops a strong relationship with the back line hm, goddammit why is Beatrice the character who can do everything™
though now that i'm noodling more, if we go back to Beatrice as Kageyama, yes it'd be a different dynamic but also huh it could be interesting to set (lol) up a backstory for Beatrice that run similar to Kageyama where they both developed a rift with their past teams because they were driving them too hard and has to learn how to meet folks where they are. (then later learn to challenge once that trust and individual and team skill have built up). hm in that way, Beatrice's arc could be really interesting - and she and Ava could still have a rivalry and push each other to be better, just not as antagonistic as Kageyama and Hinata...
sorry anon this is just me rambling. last thing i'll say about this and Haikyu is that this kind of au would be interesting on a group/team level because their team, Karasuno, doesn't have that elite standing like the OCS, they're the underdogs which, idk, i feel like could provide some interesting conversations with canon

watching the 2024 olympics, nishida yuji became one of my absolute favorite players. the strength of his spikes and his energy are so deeply thrilling, each of his plays just has you on the edge of your seat and i remember cheering so hard whenever he scored! ❤️
his play style reminded me of coach washijo's fascination with power in haikyu!!, and the thing with nishida is that his spikes are so powerful, though he is at the same time quite short for a volleyball player. in the olympics, nishida proved time and time again that he can fight against taller players and come out victorious just the same. like ushijima in haikyu!!, he is both left-handed and powerful, but also quite short compared to other players but that doesn't take anything away from him. he is the ultimate combination between washijo's love for powerful athletes and the idea, embodied by hinata and hoshiumi, that height cannot limit your greatness.
nishida's powerful spikes had me understand caoch washijo's love for power, and at the same time the ability of some of rjn's shorter players to compete against such tall players on the world stage and win regardless of height is so inspiring 🥺

one of the best ways to personally understand and write Akaashi and Bokuto’s characters would be to look at official material outside of the anime and manga. By that I mean I really do encourage:
1. Watching the stage plays - it helps a lot to understand Bokuto and Akaashi’s mannerisms and gestures. Even if those two are in the background, it’s nice to observe how they act and the difference between their actions as well, more so how they react to things (example would be Bokuto screaming and hollering when Karasuno scores a point against Inarizaki over Akaashi who simply claps)
2. Seiyuu events - these are certain events that are hosted with the voice actors of the characters in Haikyu!! Often, there’s an extra segment where the seiyuus voice their characters in a situation or story in front of a crowd, it adds unto understanding how Bokuto and Akaashi speak. Considering most, if not at least 75%, of the dialogue in Haikyu!! is centered on volleyball, it sort of difficult to write for the HQ characters when you don’t quite know how they would speak in regular conversations about mundane things, Bokuto and Akaashi being no exception. The seiyuu events particularly the segments where they voice are a really good way of getting a vibe of how they would talk and what they talk about even (especially when the dialogue is not part of the anime/manga)
3. Audio drama - similar to two, audio dramas on the other hand are recorded audios of the characters voiced once again by the seiyuus. It helps in understanding how their dialogues works and how they speak. From what I know, there’s only one Fukurodani audio drama but you can get a good grasp of the way Bokuto and Akaashi bounce at each other in terms of conversation.
4. Haikyu-bu - Although it’s not written by Furudate-sensei, it is still considered official material under the Haikyu!! franchise which makes the dialogue, actions and personality still tied and true to how Bokuto and Akaashi act in general and again, good resource to understand how they act and speak.
this can honestly go for any Haikyu character! I just wanted to ramble a bit and help anyone in case they want to have other source materials to better their characterization/ dialogue for them, even I’m still trying my best to fine tune the way I characterize Bokuto and Akaashi <33

Went and saw the Haikyu!! Stage play today and my life has changed for the better. I don’t want to give too much away but here is a few things I just have to share.
1. They call Tsukki “big boy” and he hates it <3
2. Kinoshita and Yamaguchi have a secret handshake and it’s the best thing I’ve ever set my eyes on!!!
3. There is always so much action on stage you could see it 1000 times and always find something new.
4. The music is simply amazing. I just don’t know what to do anymore.
5. When Hinata show up uninvited to the Miyagi first year training camp thing the fit Tsukishima pitches is simply magnificent.
It was a wonderful show and the new cast did a spectacular job. If you find a way to see it I’d say for for it 100% worth every yen!
