The archeocete Perucetus colossus dives through a coastal bloom of jellyfish in the Pisco Basin (southern Peru), some time during the Eocene (with bonus multiview).
I originally intended to add epibionts to this reconstruction (reflecting the specialized communities found on many living whales, especially baleen whales). Yet, interestingly, it appears that most animal epibionts and ectoparasites of modern cetaceans, such as whale barnacles (Hayashi et al. 2013) and remoras (Friedman et al. 2013), only appeared in the Neogene or late Paleogene, or have a poorly known (co-)evolutionary history, like whale lice (Pfeiffer 2009, Iwasa-Arai & Serejo 2018) and pennellids (large parasitic copepods) (Hermosilla et al. 2015). So, no epibionts* for big lad Perucetus!
References and notes about the reconstruction:
*animal epibionts. Unicellular eukaryotes like diatoms were most likely present on early cetaceans, given their prevalence on modern large marine animals (Ashworth et al. 2022). Of course, it is possible that other animals (i.e., early, less specialized representatives of modern groups, or different taxa altogether) were also already exploiting the surfaces offered by these early whales; however, this remains entirely speculative.
The reconstruction of Perucetus proposed in its original description (Bianucci et al. 2023) includes some rather odd (if interesting) choices about soft tissues, including limbs with webbed and distinguishable fingers, and a manatee-like tail. While these choices might be defendable in light of the rather basal status of Perucetus among cetaceans, I opted for a more derived look based on the assumption that fully marine cetaceans like basilosaurids would have probably rapidly acquired hydrodynamically favorable adaptations, pushing them towards a more familiar Neoceti-like appearance (even though Perucetus itself was likely a poor swimmer (Bianucci et al. 2023), it seems likely to me that this was a secondarily acquired trait, given the less extreme morphology of other basilosaurids).
Reconstruction in the multiview scaled to ~18 m in length after the estimations of Bianucci et al. (2023).

Genuine question, what’s your criteria for assessing whether or not someone is a troll when you receive an initial message and you decide to post it or not?
In the case of ♠️ and 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 they both sent a tip in advance to prove their credibility to us. ♠️ sent a tip to the TTB blog about Karlie attending the Nashville reputation concert. When it because true it was posted on the TTB blog as a credible tip (with the date proving their advanced knowledge). ♠️ then proceeded to send numerous messages to that blog that proved highly credible.
With 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿, they sent this blog this message to establish their credibility.
🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 TS will be at the Haim concert tonight in London 😉 - July 21
With 🎃, their first message was so beautifully written that there was no way it was a troll. So I posted it, and several of their messages after. It was clear later that they had inside knowledge (for example, they detailed the "I Can See You" music video before it happened).
🌋 I give some credibility based on the bodyguard holding a 🌋🕯️the day after we received a 🌋 message.
🫚 proved to know things in advance, especially related to the TIMES article.

Lol at that bs article saying "historically, Taylor's always been super private about everything". The one and only person she has been "super private" is Joe, Selena was there during hiddleswift, and went to CH show with Haim a month into their relationship. It's bs but if it was coming from People or ET I might have believe it but it's coming from fucking page six.
yep. She is 33 almost 34 how slow do these people want her to go? She isn't 22 years old. Get off her dick and let her live.

What Judeo-Arabic has in common with Arabic – and what it does not
Jews in Arab lands spoke a language much the same as their Arab neighbours, but they were not Arab Jews, argues Philologos in Mosaic. (With thanks: Ilan)
Tumblr media
Professor Ella Shohat, pioneer of the label ‘Arab Jew’
Judeo-Arabic” is said to be the language spoken by the large number of Jews who inhabited the Arabic-speaking lands of the Middle East before leaving them after the establishment of Israel. But although the term is widely used, did such a distinct language actually exist? Not according to Ella Shohat, Professor of Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies at New York University, as argued in a recent essay “‘Judeo-Arabic and the Separationist Thesis,” published by her in the newly founded Palestine/Israel Review.
Shohat’s argument is straightforward. While the speech of Jews in Arab lands, she contends, may have had certain peculiarities not shared with Muslim and Christian speakers of Arabic, these were minor features that caused neither Jews nor non-Jews to feel that Jews spoke anything but the ordinary colloquial Arabic of their region; moreover, these features were regional themselves, so that what was true of the speech of a Jew from Baghdad was not necessarily true of the speech of a Jew from Cairo, and the “Judeo-Arabic” of a Moroccan Jew was different from the “Judeo-Arabic” of a Yemenite Jew. The idea, writes Shohat, that there was ever a “Judeo-Arabic” common to all Arabic-speaking Jews and setting them apart from Arabic-speaking non-Jews is a myth propagated, for ideological reasons, by contemporary Jewish linguists.
This myth, Shohat maintains, was associated with Zionism and with Israel’s conflict with the Arab world, which made it seek to “de-Arabize” Arabic-speaking Jews by insisting on “the inherent distinctiveness of the Jewish [form of Arabic] from the Arabic language [spoken by non-Jews] and its assumed connectivity to other Jewish languages in other places.” On the one hand, that is, placing the speech of Jews in Arab lands on a par with truly distinct Jewish languages like Judeo-German (Yiddish) or Judeo-Spanish (Ladino) served to create the false impression that they lived in a state of social separation from their non-Jewish environment, as did Yiddish speakers in Eastern Europe and Ladino speakers in Turkey and the Balkans; on the other hand, it conveyed that they had nothing linguistically in common with their new neighbors in Israel, the Arabic-speaking Palestinians. This “separationist thesis,” as Shohat calls it, was thus intended to drive a wedge, historical and present-day, between Jews and Arabs in the name of Jewish uniqueness.
Needless to say, Shohat, who grew up in Israel, to which her family came from Iraq, and who calls herself an “Arab Jew,” has her own ideological ax to grind—and she grinds it far more tendentiously than did such proponents of “the separationist thesis” attacked by her as the eminent Hebrew University linguists Joshua Blau (1919–2020) and Haim Blanc (1930–1984), both given prominence in her article. Still, one must not be blinded by her anti-Zionism and lack of linguistic training into dismissing her argument out of hand, because it is not entirely baseless.
This is so because, although the question of what distinguishes a language, what a dialect, and what a mere regional or ethnic variety of standard speech is a vexed one that indeed often involves political and ideological issues, the issue of mutual intelligibility is invariably at its core. Where such intelligibility exists to a high degree, separate languages do not—and Shohat is correct in saying that speakers of the ordinary Arabic of the various regions of North Africa and the Middle East, and speakers of these regions’ “Judeo-Arabic” variants, never had any trouble understanding one another.
To this statement, it is true, two caveats need to be added. The first is that, prior to modern times, Arabic-speaking Jews wrote Arabic in Hebrew characters that non-Jews could not read and were unable themselves, for the most part, to read Arabic characters; the written Arabic of each group, therefore, was a closed book to the other. The second caveat is that, though its grammar, syntax, and general vocabulary were no different from those of ordinary Arabic, “Judeo-Arabic,” like Jewish speech nearly everywhere, made extensive use of Hebrew and Hebrew-derived words that non-Jews were unfamiliar with.
Neither of these points, though, carries critical weight. Writing Arabic in the Hebrew alphabet does not mean that its writers were writing a different language any more than Serbian and Croatian are different languages because Serbs write Serbo-Croatian in Cyrillic characters and Croats in Latin ones. And while a Moroccan Jew who said “Simossilinu” (from Hebrew Hashem yatsilenu), “God help us,” to a non-Jew in speaking of some predicament would have met with a blank stare, this is precisely why he would have been unlikely to say it, just as a New York Jew would not generally say to a non-Jewish colleague, “Do I have tsuris!”
Moreover, even when Jewish speakers pronounced Arabic words or used Arabic grammatical forms differently from their neighbors, such pronunciations and usages were rarely uniquely Jewish. If the Jews of Baghdad, for instance, said kultu, “I said,” rather than gelt, as did their Muslim counterparts, this was because kultu was the standard form, still widely used in the Arab world, that they had preserved as one of the city’s oldest communities, whereas non-standard gelt was brought to Baghdad by rural and Bedouin migrants. And conversely, if the Jews of Cairo said leysh, “why,” in place of Cairene ley, this was because many of them could trace their roots to Syria and Lebanon, where leysh was the accepted usage. When Baghdadis heard kultu from Jews, or Cairenes heard leysh, they were not hearing anything felt by them to be foreign to Arabic.
Such examples help demonstrate why Shohat is right. But they also demonstrate why she is wrong, because the very fact that Jews wrote Arabic in Hebrew characters, or clung to usages that were not the rule among the non-Jews in whose midst they lived, indicates that, even if “Judeo-Arabic” was not very different from non-Jewish Arabic, it was the product of a tightly knit and inwardly oriented community that did separate itself from its surroundings. Linguistically speaking, such things could only have happened in an environment in which Jews socialized mostly or entirely with themselves and had relatively little social contact with non-Jews. While Jews and non-Jews in the Arabic-speaking world might have enjoyed good neighborly relations, done business together, and been on superficially friendly terms, clear boundaries existed between them. An Arabic-speaking Jew was always a Jew, just as an Arabic-speaking Arab was always an Arab, and this distinction was never lost on anyone.
This is why the term “Arab Jew,” with its implication that the Jews of Arab lands traditionally thought of themselves as Arabs in much the same way, say, that the Jews of America think of themselves as Americans, is a historical absurdity.

I have a feeling that Taylor and TK are over. Yesterday when he was giving his press conference from Germany he was asked if Taylor was coming. He avoided answering the question altogether and changed the subject. What I think is she got upset when she was at his new home and the Daily Mail flew in a drone to get photos. I could see how that would upset her and she came back home. She probably said she was done with all of it. Gossip was she told the Haim sisters she wasn't going to any more games for a few weeks. Taylor fans have no clue something is wrong. I sensed when she was out with Phoebe and not with the WAGS in NYC it was over. What do you think?
Idk if it’s over but I do feel things are starting to get rocky between them. All the different articles that came out this week. Then his publicist posting the photo with the clown on her face. I do think there is tension in the air. Feels like they’re stepping back a little bit cause it was all getting to be to much.

i’ve been a taylor fan since 2013 ish,
i know she’s a grudge holder but if she was willing to make up with kanye for a brief period she’s not gonna be wishing ill upon a 20 year old, or purposely managing her business tactics like having paramore or sabrina open for her.
hayleys been around taylor forever, and sabrina may have about as many followers as liv but sabrina isn’t about to start selling out arenas just yet.
and maybe, she did ask olivia, and she said no. she was clearly working on guts, besides we have no way of knowing. and i feel like taylor the queen of being slut shamed probably resonated with sabrina for that.
it also would be extremely dumb of taylor to have stepped back from attempting to claim the music that she did of olivia’s considering her whole schtick as of recently is artists owning their work. if she didn’t when the comparisons were made it would read as though it’s okay for artists to “steal” (i use that loosely because i think olivia didn’t intentionally steal anything, just sampled without listing that credit) when it’s someone taylor likes.
i just feel like they’re all smaller artists than olivia, even haim. like gracie opened for olivia, olivia didn’t need a taylor boost
dkm, i’m just saying it’s tiring seeing people talk about a 33 year old beefing with a 20 year old.
i’ll eat ass if i’m wrong and she says fuck taylor or something in that article but wholeheartedly think it’s not as deep and people make it out to be.
honey taylor and olivia had a huge private fight and taylor bullied her into giving her writing credits on deja vous and i know for a FACT, that for olivia, it was a huge fucking deal. in photoshoots everyone would be advised- no taylor music on the photoshoot playlist or olivia will have a meltdown. it DEVASTATED her. i've gotten loads of info on this and done all sorts of research into this. now it may not be that deep to taylor anymore, but it was enough for taylor to write a song about how she felt threatened by olivia and yes i do think it's part of why sab got asked to open for eras. taylor absolutely DID NOT ask olivia to open for eras, where are you even getting this?
olivia DID NOT SAMPLE deja vous. she mentioned that the way taylor screamed in the song helped inspire the bridge. it gave taylor a TINY in where she was able to threaten to sue for royalties and olivia's team gave up fast because they didn't want a legal battle with taylor. god i'm sorry but if you're gonna hang around these parts and send in long asks i am gonna need you to get with the evidence-based gossip vibe. you are ill informed on this situation and don't need to be rattling off fanfic about how there is no beef when we all know there is one and i have published all the evidence in succint tiktoks and pod episodes.

I don’t think we’ve seen Austin or Kaia in pap pics since they got home from Mexico. I know what Austin is up to right now, but where is Kaia?? I miss her
i assumeee she's been busy with the filming shell but i dont know how big her role is. her character goes missing and i think that's what drives the plot so it happens early on. but my question, do we see where she is/what she is doing while missing? because that would mean more filming as opposed to what would be required if she was only in the movie up to the point of going missing. there's been pap photos of elizabeth moss on set but not kaia. i am nosy and would like to see her face! i also miss her!
i do know este haim is now a part of the cast, would loveee a photo of her and k!
eta: she did go to miami for i assume a couple days for the celine store thing, according to the article to 'kick off the year' ie: earlier this month. so she might actually already be done with shell? if she could peace out and leave the state for a hot second? (also kate hudson didn't wrap yet, whoops)

Hi anon thanks for this I forgot about this article.
I’m sorry I cut off the bottom half of your ask. I know you mean well but it makes me uncomfortable putting out stuff about Nyree as she’s not a public figure. I don’t want people to be encouraged to dig around in her personal stuff.

Have you heard of Solica, the Jewish Joan of Ark?
Writing in Jewish Journal, Tabby Raphael tells the story of the martyrdom of Solica Hachuel, executed for refusing to convert to Islam in Fez, Morocco in 1834.
Tumblr media
The execution of Solika in a painting by Alfred Duodencq
Solica was falsely accused of converting to Islam, and then wanting to return to Judaism, a grievous crime punishable by death. She refused repeated offers to convert to Islam (as well as repeated marriage proposals, including, it is believed, an offer by the sultan’s son). Even the hachamim of Morocco begged her to comply because the Jewish community was also at risk, but Solica refused to abandon Judaism. Rather than decide her fate himself, the sultan placed her case into the hands of the cadi, or an Islamic judge and court.
That sealed Solica’s fate. The Jewish community was mortified to learn that she was sentenced to beheading on market day in 1834. The executioner first made sharp cuts in her neck, hoping she would finally agree to convert. Solica’s final words are astonishing: “Do not make me linger — behead me at once — for dying as I do, innocent of any crime, the G d of Abraham will avenge my death!”
Believing she would still relent, the executioner cut off her limbs, but still Solica would not convert. Some believe that Solica Hachuel was beheaded on June 5, 1834, while others claim the date is unknown and hold the annual hilloula (pilgrimage) to her tomb in May or June to coincide with the passing of Rabbi Haim HaCohen, another Jewish tzaddik (saint) who also is buried in the Fez Jewish cemetery.
Of that dark day in Fez, Eugenio Maria Romero, a Christian scholar, wrote, “The Moors, whose religious fanaticism is indescribable, prepared, with their accustomed joy, to witness the horrid scene. The Jews of the city … were moved with the deepest sorrow, but they could do nothing to avert it.” Romero claimed he interviewed those who knew Solica, including her parents, for his 1837 book, “El Martirio de la Jóven Hachuel, ó, La Heroina Hebrea” (The Martyrdom of the Young Hatchouel, or, The Hebrew Heroine”).
I’ll spare readers the details of the incredible trouble the Jews of Fez endured to secure Solica’s body, the blood-soaked earth beneath her, and especially her head, and to properly bury them in accordance with Jewish law. Those details are not for the faint of heart, but I’m always amazed at the lengths Jews will endure to ensure proper Jewish burial, whether for loved ones or strangers.
Solica was buried in the Jewish cemetery in Fez, in a space normally reserved for the hachamim. Each year, thousands of Moroccan Jews make an annual pilgrimage to her tomb, but amazingly, she is also considered a saint for some Muslims. For nearly 200 years, Moroccans have believed that Solica intervenes on behalf of sick children; many baby girls are named after her.
And many songs, as well as several books, works of art and even a film have been made about this remarkable young woman. Nineteenth-century French painter Alfred Dehodencq famously depicted her execution in his painting “Execution d’une juive au Maroc” (“Execution of a Jewess in Morocco”). Jewish mothers often sang to their young daughters in Ladino about Solica and the harm of jealousy and undesired romantic pursuits.

Why do we think Joe fucked up?
She made de L sign to "lover-Taylor" during look what you made me do.
Plus all of her friends unfollowing him on instagram. Ryan Reynolds was friends with Joe and wrote an article about him. Gigi Hadid introduced them to each other. The Haim sisters, her brother,... if the break-up was amicable why would they unfollow Joe? She/they know(s) people pay attention the instagram following.
The evidence is really piling up and not by accident 👀

I need to know what you think about the whole Joe thing because at this point I'm genuinely so confused as to what's going on
i hesitate to even answer this at all, anon, because I'm honestly in the same boat as you.
all i can honestly say is something about this situation doesn't feel right to me. i don't really wanna say too much because i dont want to fan the joe is a beard bullshit but the whole "differences in personality" thing... almost that exact same wording was used during the coverage of the harris x swift break-up. im not gunna look it up but if you research the people article for it, you can see what im talking about.
we also know that as soon as midnights, her most accurate album to date, she wrote sweet nothing about her relationship with Joe. Its a really hard pill for me to swallow that after seven years of music about how supportive and how understanding he is of her career, the thing that broke them apart was "differences in personality."
but then there is haim, gigi, blake and ryan, austin unfollowing him off instagram. why? why would they do that right now, in the middle of her tour being made about this fucking break up, when they absolutely KNOW that people will be reading into those actions. however, there is also the possibility that none of those people were actually following on insta to begin with because he doesnt actually post on there. i have no way of verifying that they actually recently unfollowed him but the words of the same fans who believed he deleted the cat photo of his insta when it was just a story in the first place.
all i can say for certain is the pap pictures are planned easter eggs about a work related project. she knows we expect speak now so it would be the perfect time to throw another curveball at us. i can also see taylor deciding to have some fun with the media coverage of her tour, especially if she is announcing a film soon in which she tackles fame and the media specifically in it, when she told us in lavender haze the way she protects her relationship is by ignoring the media. like, she could be showing us how much of a mastermind she actually is. like, im getting so much deja vu from 1989 era and the fact that she used the same wording as calvin harris break up, that makes me so suspicious. i still think she's planning on coming out this summer so im not sure if this could somehow be related to that?
i keep going back to the coverage of this relationship, the media narrative she crafted of this man who supports her superstardom and just wants to be in her presence and nothing else, and how it's a complete 180 from everything she has let us know up to this point. like, the fact that in the span of 2 weeks, we have had swifties take the narrative from "they broke up" to "he cheated on her" also just makes me feel like super gross about the situation.
like i am just not a fan of all the drama about taylor's personal life all of a fucking sudden now that we think she's single as a fandom. like, wow, and like she spent so much of their relationship shading the people who called it fake or disgenuine, that i just... i dont know. nothing about how this is playing out makes any sense to me.
taylor hid the relationship for almost a year, you don't think she would have waited until the tour was over to release this news??? and then we got the pic of joe, which like, thats the first pap pic ive ever seen of him alone i think and that also makes me question why we're seeing him right after taylor. like, she was so happy right up until tour, it kind of makes me think something dramatic did happen because why did they all unfollow him?
i just don't really know what the fuck is going on. I dont really believe any of what they say is the reason they broke up, i guess. if they did break up, it sure as shit isnt even close to what the media is running with imho.
and then im like idk this whole thing just doesnt make sense and that's really all i have to say about it.

I could buy the article as being true. Especially, since it said Selena AND the Haim sisters were concerned. And they are hee closest friends

i was thinking about a possible confirmation from People in the next weeks or months, then i kinda thought that if they decide to go low key at least in the begging, is more possible that we get paparazzi photos before a People article. and it also got me thinking that Harry don't usually go public about his personal life, so does he would agree with announcing they are dating? i dont remember if his team had confirm when he was with Olivia or Camille i just remember when the photos came out
i would like to know what do you think about these thoughts, it makes sense?
I don’t think we’ll get anything till the fall. The Haim sisters posted about it being a “single summer”. So unless the paps catch them (which I doubt cause they know places lol) they’ll keep it low key. Which I think is a good idea. They don’t need all the media attention while they’re trying to build a relationship.
I don’t think Harry has ever publicly announced he’s dating someone. I can see them being seen together then maybe confirming it.
