It was all downhill after the Cuecat
Tumblr media
Sometime in 2001, I walked into a Radio Shack on San Francisco’s Market Street and asked for a Cuecat: a handheld barcode scanner that looked a bit like a cat and a bit like a sex toy. The clerk handed one over to me and I left, feeling a little giddy. I didn’t have to pay a cent.
The Cuecat was a good idea and a terrible idea. The good idea was to widely distribute barcode scanners to computer owners, along with software that could read and decode barcodes; the company’s marketing plan called for magazines and newspapers to print barcodes alongside ads and articles, so readers could scan them and be taken to the digital edition. To get the Cuecat into widespread use, the company raised millions in the capital markets, then mass-manufactured these things and gave them away for free at Radio Shacks around the country. Every Wired and Forbes subscriber got one in the mail!
That was the good idea (it’s basically a prototype for today’s QR-codes). The terrible idea was that this gadget would spy on you. Also, it would only work with special barcodes that had to be licensed from the manufacturer. Also, it would only work on Windows.
https://web.archive.org/web/20001017162623/http://www.businessweek.com/bwdaily/dnflash/sep2000/nf20000928_029.htm
But the manufacturer didn’t have the last word! Not at all. A couple of enterprising hardware hackers — Pierre-Philippe Coupard and Michael Rothwell — tore down a Cuecat, dumped its ROM, and produced their own driver for it — a surveillance-free driver that worked with any barcode. You could use it to scan the UPCs on your books or CDs or DVDs to create a catalog of your media; you could use it to scan UPCs on your groceries to make a shopping list. You could do any and every one of these things, because the Cuecat was yours.
Cuecat’s manufacturer, Digital Convergence, did not like this at all. They sent out legal demand letters and even shut down some of the repositories that were hosting alternative Cuecat firmware. They changed the license agreement that came with the Cuecat software CD to prohibit reverse-engineering.
http://www.cexx.org/cuecat.htm
It didn’t matter, both as a practical matter and as a matter of law. As a practical matter, the (ahem) cat was out of the bag: there were so many web-hosting companies back then, and people mirrored the code to so many of them, the company would have its hands full chasing them all down and intimidating them into removing the code.
Then there was the law: how could you impose license terms on a gift? How could someone be bound by license terms on a CD that they simply threw away without ever opening it, much less putting it in their computer?
https://slashdot.org/story/00/09/18/1129226/digital-convergence-changes-eula-and-gets-cracked
In the end, Cuecat folded and sold off its remaining inventory. The early 2000s were not a good time to be a tech company, much less a tech company whose business model required millions of people to meekly accept a bad bargain.
Back then, tech users didn’t feel any obligation to please tech companies’ shareholders: if they backed a stupid business, that was their problem, not ours. Venture capitalists were capitalists — if they wanted us give to them according to their need and take from them according to their ability, they should be venture communists.
Last August, philosopher and Centre for Technomoral Futures director Shannon Vallor tweeted, “The saddest thing for me about modern tech’s long spiral into user manipulation and surveillance is how it has just slowly killed off the joy that people like me used to feel about new tech. Every product Meta or Amazon announces makes the future seem bleaker and grayer.”
https://twitter.com/ShannonVallor/status/1559659655097376768
She went on: “I don’t think it’s just my nostalgia, is it? There’s no longer anything being promised to us by tech companies that we actually need or asked for. Just more monitoring, more nudging, more draining of our data, our time, our joy.”
https://twitter.com/ShannonVallor/status/1559663985821106177
Today on Tumblr, @wilwheaton responded: “[T]here is very much no longer a feeling of ‘How can this change/improve my life?’ and a constant dread of ‘How will this complicate things as I try to maintain privacy and sanity in a world that demands I have this thing to operate.’”
https://wilwheaton.tumblr.com/post/698603648058556416/cory-doctorow-if-you-see-this-and-have-thoughts
Wil finished with, “Cory Doctorow, if you see this and have thoughts, I would LOVE to hear them.”
I’ve got thoughts. I think this all comes back to the Cuecat.
When the Cuecat launched, it was a mixed bag. That’s generally true of technology — or, indeed, any product or service. No matter how many variations a corporation offers, they can never anticipate all the ways that you will want or need to use their technology. This is especially true for the users the company values the least — poor people, people in the global south, women, sex workers, etc.
That’s what makes the phrase “So easy your mom can use it” particularly awful “Moms” are the kinds of people whose priorities and difficulties are absent from the room when tech designers gather to plan their next product. The needs of “moms” are mostly met by mastering, configuring and adapting technology, because tech doesn’t work out of the box for them:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/05/19/the-weakest-link/#moms-are-ninjas
(As an alternative, I advocate for “so easy your boss can use it,” because your boss gets to call up the IT department and shout, “I don’t care what it takes, just make it work!” Your boss can solve problems through raw exercise of authority, without recourse to ingenuity.)
Technology can’t be understood separately from technology users. This is the key insight in Donald Norman’s 2004 book Emotional Design, which argued that the ground state of all technology is broken, and the overarching task of tech users is to troubleshoot the things they use:
https://pluralistic.net/2020/04/29/banjo-nazis/#cuckoos-egg
Troubleshooting is both an art and a science: it requires both a methodical approach and creative leaps. The great crisis of troubleshooting is that the more frustrated and angry you are, the harder it is to be methodical or creative. Anger turns attention into a narrow tunnel of brittle movements and thinking.
In Emotional Design, Norman argues that technology should be beautiful and charming, because when you like a technology that has stopped working, you are able to troubleshoot it in an expansive, creative, way. Emotional Design was not merely remarkable for what it said, but for who said it.
Donald Norman, after all, was the author of the hugely influential 1998 classic The Design of Everyday Things, which counseled engineers and designers to put function over form — to design things that work well, even if that meant stripping away ornament and sidelining aesthetics.
https://www.basicbooks.com/titles/don-norman/the-design-of-everyday-things/9780465050659/
With Emotional Design, Norman argued that aesthetics were functional, because aesthetics primed users to fix the oversights and errors and blind spots of designers. It was a manifesto for competence and humility.
And yet, as digital technology has permeated deeper into our lives, it has grown less configurable, not more. Companies today succeed where Cuecat failed. Consolidation in the online world means that if you remove a link from one search engine and four social media sites, the material in question vanishes for 99% of internet users.
It’s even worse for apps: anyone who succeeds in removing an app from two app stores essentially banishes it from the world. One mobile platform uses technological and legal countermeasures to make it virtually impossible to sideload an app; the other one relies on strong-arm tactics and deceptive warnings to do so.
That means that when a modern Coupard and Rothwell decides to unfuck some piece of technology — to excise the surveillance and proprietary media requirements, leaving behind the welcome functionality — they can only do so with the sufferance of the manufacturer. If the manufacturer doesn’t like an add-on, mod, plug-in or overlay, they can use copyright takedowns, anticircumvention law, patent threats, trademark threats, cybersecurity law, contract law and other “IP” to simply banish the offending code:
https://locusmag.com/2020/09/cory-doctorow-ip/
Many of these laws carry dire penalties. For example, distributing a tool that bypasses an “access control” so that you can change the software on a gadget (say, to make your printer accept third-party ink) is a felony under Section 1201 of the DMCA, punishable by a $500k fine and a 5-year prison sentence.
If Cuecat’s manufacturers had simply skinned their firmware with a thin scrim of DRM, they could have threatened Coupard and Rothwell with prison sentences. The developments in “IP” over the two decades since the Cuecat have conjured up a new body of de facto law that Jay Freeman calls “felony contempt of business model.”
Once we gave companies the power to literally criminalize the reconfiguration of their products, everything changed. In the Cuecat era, a corporate meeting to plan a product that acted against its users’ interests had to ask, “How will we sweeten the pot and/or obfuscate our code so that our users don’t remove the anti-features we’re planning to harm them with?”
But in a world of Felony Contempt of Business Model, that discussion changes to “Given that we can literally imprison anyone who helps our users get more out of this product, how can we punish users who are disloyal enough to simply quit our service or switch away from our product?”
That is, “how can we raise the switching costs of our products so that users who are angry at us keep using our products?” When Facebook was planning its photos product, they deliberately designed it to tempt users into making it the sole repository of their family photos, in order to hold those photos ransom to keep Facebook users from quitting for G+:
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2021/08/facebooks-secret-war-switching-costs
Companies claim that their lock-in strategies are about protecting their users: “Move into our walled garden, for it is a fortress, whose battlements bristle with fearsome warriors who will defend you from the bandits who roam the countryside”:
https://locusmag.com/2021/01/cory-doctorow-neofeudalism-and-the-digital-manor/
But this “feudal security” offers a terrible temptation to the lords of these fortresses, because once you are inside those walls, the fortress can easily be converted to a prison: these companies can abuse you with impunity, for so long as the cost of the abuse is less than the cost of the things you must give up when you leave.
The tale that companies block you from overriding their decisions is for your own good was always dubious, because companies simply can’t anticipate all the ways their products will fail you. No design team knows as much about your moment-to-moment struggles as you do.
But even where companies are sincere in their desire to be the most benevolent of dictators, the gun on the mantelpiece in Act I is destined to go off by Act III: eventually, the temptation to profit by hurting you will overpower whatever “corporate ethics” once stayed the hand of the techno-feudalist who rules over your fortress. Under feudal security, you are one lapse in corporate leadership from your protector turning into your tormentor.
When Apple launched the Ipad 12 years ago, I published an editorial entitled “Why I won’t buy an iPad (and think you shouldn’t, either),” in which I predicted that app stores would inevitable be turned against users:
https://memex.craphound.com/2010/04/01/why-i-wont-buy-an-ipad-and-think-you-shouldnt-either/
Today, Apple bans apps if they “use…a third-party service” unless they “are specifically permitted to do so under the service’s terms of use.” In other words, Apple specifically prohibits developers from offering tools that displease other companies’ shareholders, no matter whether this pleases Apple customers:
https://developer.apple.com/app-store/review/guidelines/#intellectual-property
Note that clause 5.2.2 of Apple’s developer agreement doesn’t say “You mustn’t violate a legally enforceable term of service.” It just says, “Thou shalt not violate a EULA.” EULAs are garbage-novellas of impenetrable legalese, larded with unenforceable and unconscionable terms.
Apple sometimes will displease other companies on your behalf. For example, it instituted a one-click anti-tracking setting for Ios that cost Facebook $10 billion in a matter of months:
https://www.cnbc.com/2022/02/02/facebook-says-apple-ios-privacy-change-will-cost-10-billion-this-year.html
But Apple also has big plans to expand its margins by growing its own advertising network. When Apple customers choose ad-blockers that block Apple’s ads, will Apple permit it?
https://www.wired.com/story/apple-is-an-ad-company-now/
The problem with app stores isn’t whether your computing experience is “curated” — that is, whether entities you trust can produce collections of software they vouch for. The problem is when you can’t choose someone else — when leaving a platform involves high switching costs, whether that’s having to replace hardware, buy new media, or say goodbye to your friends, customers, community or family.
When a company can leverage its claims to protecting you to protect itself from you — from choices you might make that ultimately undermine its shareholders interests, even if they protect your own interests — it would be pretty goddamned naive to expect it to do otherwise.
More and more of our tools are now digital tools, whether we’re talking about social media or cars, tractors or games consoles, toothbrushes or ovens:
https://www.hln.be/economie/gentse-foodboxleverancier-mealhero-failliet-klanten-weten-van-niets~a3139f52/
And more and more, those digital tools look more like apps than Cuecats, with companies leveraging “IP” to let them control who can compete with them — and how. Indeed, browsers are becoming more app-like, rather than the other way around.
Back in 2017, the W3C took the unprecedented step of publishing a DRM standard despite this standard not having anything like the consensus that is the norm for W3C publications, and the W3C rejected a proposal to protect people who reverse-engineered that standard to add accessibility features or correct privacy defects:
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2017/09/open-letter-w3c-director-ceo-team-and-membership
And while we’re seeing remarkable progress on Right to Repair and other policies that allow the users of technology to override the choices of vendors, there’s another strong regulatory current that embraces companies’ ability to control their users, in the hopes that these big companies will police their users to prevent bad stuff, from controversial measures like filtering for copyright infringement to more widely supported ideas like blocking child sex abuse material (CSAM, AKA “child porn”).
There are two problems with this. First, if we tell companies they must control their users (that is, block them from running plugins, mods, skins, filters, etc) then we can’t tell them that they must not control their users. It comes down to whether you want to make Mark Zuckerberg better at his job, or whether you want to abolish the job of “Mark Zuckerberg.”
https://doctorow.medium.com/unspeakable-8c7bbd4974bc
Then there’s the other problem — the gun on the mantelpiece problem. If we give big companies the power to control their users, they will face enormous internal pressure to abuse that power. This isn’t a hypothetical risk: Facebook’s top executives stand accused of accepting bribes from Onlyfans in exchange for adding performers who left Onlyfans to a terrorist watchlist, which meant they couldn’t use other platforms:
https://gizmodo.com/clegg-meta-executives-identified-in-onlyfans-bribery-su-1849649270
I’m not a fan of terrorist watchlists, for obvious reasons. But letting Facebook manage the terrorist watchlist was clearly a mistake. But Facebook’s status as a “trusted reporter” grows directly out of Facebook’s good work on moderation. The lesson is the same as the one with Apple and the ads — just because the company sometimes acts in our interests, it doesn’t follow that we should always trust them to do so.
Back to Shannon Vallor’s question about the origins of “modern tech’s long spiral into user manipulation and surveillance” and how that “killed off the joy that people like me used to feel about new tech”; and Wil Wheaton’s “constant dread of ‘How will this complicate things as I try to maintain privacy and sanity.”
Tech leaders didn’t get stupider or crueler since those halcyon days. The tech industry was and is filled with people who made their bones building weapons of mass destruction for the military-industrial complex; IBM, the company that gave us the PC, built the tabulating machines for Nazi concentration camps:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IBM_and_the_Holocaust
We didn’t replace tech investors and leaders with worse people — we have the same kinds of people but we let them get away with more. We let them buy up all their competitors. We let them use the law to lock out competitors they couldn’t buy, including those who would offer their customers tools to lower their switching costs and block abusive anti-features.
We decided to create “Felony Contempt of Business Model,” and let the creators of the next Cuecat reach beyond the walls of their corporate headquarters and into the homes of their customers, the offices of their competitors, and the handful of giant tech sites that control our online discourse, to reach into those places and strangle anything that interfered with their commercial desires.
That’s why plans to impose interoperability on tech giants are so exciting — because the problem with Facebook isn’t “the people I want to speak to are all gathered in one convenient place,” no more than the problem with app stores isn’t “these companies generally have good judgment about which apps I want to use.”
The problem is that when those companies don’t have your back, you have to pay a blisteringly high price to leave their walled gardens. That’s where interop comes in. Think of how an interoperable Facebook could let you leave behind Zuckerberg’s dominion without forswearing access to the people who matter to you:
https://www.eff.org/interoperablefacebook
Cuecats were cool. The people who made them were assholes. Interop meant that you could get the cool gadget and tell the assholes to fuck off. We have lost the ability to do so, little by little, for decades, and that’s why a new technology that seems cool no longer excites. That’s why we feel dread — because we know that a cool technology is just bait to lure us into a prison that masquerades as a fortress.

Early Morning Stroll
Tumblr media
Pairing: Changbin x reader, established relationship
Genre: Fluff
Warning: None
{Word Count: 448}
Tumblr media
Going on a night stroll with Changbin isn't what you had on your bucket list to do at 3:00 in the morning, being dressed in only your boyfriend's hoodie and a pair of fuzzy pants. Glancing over to the man in question, looking rather pleased with himself, you see the crinkles in the corners of his eyes from him smiling. You started pouting a little when you noticed his smile was being concealed by his mask.
As you both continue to walk down the sidewalk towards your favorite convenience store, the one you go to with Han sometimes when it's movie night and Changbin isn't around. Stopping at a pedestrian crossing, you hear Changbin giggling to himself.
"What?" you questioned as you looked back at him. He came closer to you, leaning close to your ear so you could hear him. "You look adorable," he hummed, with his eyes shining with adoration.
You chuckled and your cheeks tinted to a rosy color at his reply. You grabbed his hand and turned back towards the pedestrian crossing when the light changed color, signaling that people could cross. As you crossed with Changbin, you noticed some of the children with their parents rambling about things they did. A small smile appeared on your lips as you noticed a little girl out with her dad, unnoticed by you of the man next to you smiling warmly at you.
Finally getting to the convenience store, Changbin held the door open as you walked through it before mumbling a quick "morning" to the store clerk who was working at the register. Going through all the different aisles and looking at some of the new things they added, you decided to get some sashimi and chicken for Changbin before getting yourself some tteokbokki and ramen. Placing your items on the counter, you watched the clerk's nimble hands glide over each barcode. The rhythmic beep of the scanner punctuated the air. Prices flashed on the digital display, a tally of your choices. Before Changbin paid for the items, the clerk made sure everything was bagged before handing it to Changbin.
Holding the door for you, Changbin let you exit first before following after you. Once he was next to you, he grabbed your hand with his free one. As you walked onto the sidewalk, you felt the bright morning light warm your skin. Changbin's hand was still wrapped around yours. He gave it a gentle squeeze as you began walking side by side. The sounds of the street filled the air: chirping birds, chattering pedestrians, and the occasional car driving by. Walking across the pedestrian crossing you and Changbin began y'all's journey back home.

I had this thing happen to me and my mind created the perfect cartoon rendition of it but I stink at putting my brainwaves onto paper so I'll just tell y'all about it and maybe make an attempt later
so I was at work doing my thing I think I was between customers and I kinda put my hand on the counter to lean on it a little and the barcode scanner beeped
the thing hecking tried to scan my arm hair
and that hurt because all this body hair is a big dysphoria thing for me so I imagined a little cartoon me putting her hand on the counter and then the beep showing up with a big old arrow shooting through me like a big oof
I will try to draw it later but if you have any artistic ability please feel free to give it a shot yourself bc it's very silly

Independence: Corey Cunningham x older!f!reader
Tumblr media
Warnings: Smut, fingering, PinV, age gap (10 years, Joan.
A/N: I wanted to thank @toxicanonymity for buying me a waffle! They bought the 500 word fanfic, I wrote more than that cause I got carried away but here it is!
They requested a Corey Cunningham and older female reader smut!
Requests are open you can request for free or support me and buy the 500 word fanfic or any of the two art commissions I have.
“Again?” You chuckle swiping the chocolate milk across the barcode scanner. You look up and smirk at the 22 year old looking down as he hands you cash. “Oh stop being so shy, I’m just saying maybe you should buy by the gallon next time, it’ll be a lot cheaper on you.”
You count the change and hand it back to Corey. “I know..”
You watch as his cheeks get rosy and snort. “So, you gonna come by this week and help me finish cleaning out the garage?”
“Yeah, I can come over tomorrow morning if that’s alright.”
“Perfect, I’ll make you dinner afterwards. Bye now Corey.”
“Bye.”
-
“Well look at that.” You smile and take a sip of water. “Thank you so much Core, it means a bunch that you helped me. Seriously.” You watch as sweat runs down his face and his shoulders glisten.
“It really wasn’t a problem ma’am.”
You chuckle and start walking inside. “Don’t go calling me that. You make me seem older than I already am.” You joke. “You wanna take a shower? I can grab you a towel, washed the sweatshirt and sweatpants you left here the last time.”
Corey nods and heads down the hall towards the bathroom, he’d been to your place plenty of times helping you out with things to know where the bathroom was. You follow after him and grab a towel and his clothes from the closet, he takes off his tank top, you try so hard not to look as you set the items down. Your face heats up, you feel like a school girl and quickly rush out to begin dinner.
You decide on breakfast for dinner. Corey was never picky when you made things. Always told you your cooking was amazing. So he’d have to like the simple Eggs Benedict you crave.
Corey finished up his shower by the time you set the table and the plates down. His feet pad in and you get a glimpse of his broad shoulders.
“Just set your clothes in the laundry room. I’ll wash them tonight.”
You two sit and start eating. “You still like working at the mechanic’s?” You ask between bites. Corey shrugs and takes another bite of his dinner.
“I mean it’s alright. Roland is good to me and stuff but I’d rather be elsewhere. Like on my own.” Corey explains you nod.
“Yeah I get that. I was the same way when I was younger. I think you’ll move out soon. You’ll like it too. Being on your own. You’re very strong and independent Corey.”
The brunette stays quiet a few seconds to long. You furrow your brows and move your head down so you can see his face. “What’s up Core?” You ask gently.
“Would you move with me if I left?” His shoulder’s stiffen as he asks, his deep brown eyes look into yours. You look down a laugh a little in shock.
“Maybe, depends on mother dearest and whether or not she would slaughter me. Honestly Corey, I’d love to, but Joan-“
“Who cares? She wouldn’t have to know.”
You shake your head and scoff, your hand goes over top of his large one.
“She has her ways, you know this.”
“And I have mine.” Corey’s voice is almost a growl, you keep calm and smile.
“I’ll think about it, make a little plan and all that. Just so we can get you outta Haddonfield. So you can start fresh.”
You stand up and kiss Corey’s head. He looks at you, reaching his arm up his hand caresses your face. You lean down again and he proceeds to kiss you. His chapped yet soft lips, melting against your own.
He grabs your ass and you gasp, your head moving back. You playfully shake your finger at him. “Corey Cunningham!”
He chuckles and stands up, your weight meaning nothing to him as he picks you up and carries you to your bedroom.
You laugh and he playful throws you on the bed. His hands are only somewhat hesitant when he touches your waist. You kiss his freckled shoulder and move up his neck and jaw. You nip at his ear lobe and he groans softly, almost falling on top of you.
“Oh don’t let it be that easy.” You tease, he whines softly into your ear. His large hands paw at your jeans. “Go ahead.”
Corey unbuttons and slides them off, your panties going with them. He pulls down his sweats, no boxers under them. You slide out of your shirt and pull your sports bra off. His thumbs grazes your nipples a few times, you hum in enjoyment and watch as Corey is hypnotized by your breasts. “Why don’t you go ahead and suck on one Core.”
He looks up at you with sweet puppy dog eyes and nods. He licks the left one and sucks softly on it. You arch your back as he plays with the other one.
You feel his his grinding against the bed and sit up immediately. “No, you only get to do that on me or in me baby.” You coo, he nods.
Corey’s fingers caress your mound. He mumbles softly. You can’t hear him.
“Speak up.”
“Can I finger you?”
“Of course.”
Corey dips his middle finger into your hole. It already stretches you. “Shit Corey. Curl it now.” You guide. He does just that, hitting the right spot, you moan. He leans in and kisses you gently, but you go in roughly. He adds another finger, your eyes roll up, you lick Corey’s jaw and let out a breathy moan. “You’re so good. Good boy.”
Corey’s broad body shifts, you laugh and take his wrist so he pulls his fingers out. You push them to his face and he sucks your wetness off of him.
You lay back and Corey hovers above you. “Come on Corey. I wanna feel you.” You say softly. He nods and lines himself up, he takes your hips and slides in.
You squeal as his co k stretches out your hole. “Fuck.” He mumbles, he falls forward and leans on his forearm. You bite your lip for a second before you kiss him.
“You feel so nice.” You whisper. He begins thrusting his hips, starting slow then speeding up. You watch as his brows furrow in concentration. You smile and caress his face. As his pace gets rougher you begin moaning and squealing louder.
Corey grunts loudly.
“So, ah, so vocal. You’re so cute Core.” Your legs begin to shake and sweat lightly. A knot forming in your stomach.
“I’m gonna cum.” Corey’s voice is rough and low.
You nod. “Go ahead come on.”
He thrusts a few more times and he cums hard. A loud groan coming from him. He continues thrusting and your orgasm follows soon after, your vision turning all sorts of colors, your thighs push against Corey’s before you stop, panting loudly.
“You’re so good Corey. Good boy.” You mumble, you kiss his face gently all over, he leans into your touch as you hold onto him. “You need anything?” You ask, Corey shakes his head no.
“Just.. you…”
You nod, he pulls out, you feel empty, the feeling doesn’t last long, he wraps his arms around you and presses his face into your neck. You hum and play with his curly hair. It’s soft.
“You did so good for me.” You mutter. Corey nods into you and slowly falls asleep.
-
When Corey wakes you’re gone, he rubs his eyes and gets up, he pulls his sweats on and goes to look for you.
“He’s sleeping, I’m not waking him up, Joan. He will be home soon. He’s fine. Calm down.”
He listens as you huff.
“Let him sleep. He’s gonna come back home tomorrow. We have to finish up some things. Thank you. Bye.”
You sigh and hang up. Corey comes up and wraps his arms around you. “You’re supposed to be asleep.” You mumble, Corey kisses your shoulder.
“You were gone.”
“I know. Went to get you some water and Joan called.”
Corey nods.
“I think I’ll take you up on that moving with you offer.” You say, Corey stands up straight, his eyes reading excitement. He packs your lips a few times. “We’ll talk more tomorrow. For now we need to go back to bed.”
You take the two glasses of water and the two of you head back to your bedroom, ready to be in each other’s arms.

That’s good. Not long ago he would apologize instead of asking questions. It makes Kolya smile, while he runs the hand scanner over the barcode. It beeps, bringing up the information he’s looking for.
“I want to—“ He chooses his words carefully. “I want to keep you safe. You aren’t, if your owner or WRU is looking for you. I’m going to try and buy you from your old owner.”
“You want to buy me?”
Do you know what a fucked-up thing that is, Nikolai? But Eliot’s smile is so bright. “Yes. Then I will free you. Is that all right?”
Eliot hugs him.
He’s ushered in by a Domestic. Another brings trays of drinks and canapés.
He never noticed the Domestics, before. They’re not meant to be noticed, most of the time. But now he can’t stop looking at them.
“Nikolai, it’s been too long!”
He smiles, makes his courtesies. He doesn’t know the Bramwells, not really. They’re old money, society people with no blood under their fingernails. But they know the right people, they’re connected to the important people. He attended a few parties here.
He fucked their Romantic over this table, he’s pretty sure.
“If we could discuss the matter I called you about.”
“Yes. You found one of our Domestics? The barcode notification surprised us.”
“Why?” It’s one of those questions better left unasked, but she’s already answering.
“Oh, you know…” Mrs. Bramwell shrugs. “Sometimes they wander off when they near their expiration date.”
Expiration date.
“It’s usually not worth chasing after them, just to have to put them down,” Mr. Bramwell says. “It’s easier just to replace them.”
“Some do come back. It’s all they know, after all.”
It’s all they’re allowed to know. Kolya drinks from the glass in his hand, an excuse to swallow. “So, the Domestic I found. 992704.” Forgive me, Eliot. “How much do you want for him?”
After some discussion, the Bramwells settle on a paltry sum. A token price, for a friend who wants something you were going to throw away anyway, because it’s wearing out.
He’s glad to go.
“Sir?” It’s the cook, a graying matronly woman. “Did I understand correctly? You purchased 704?”
“Yes.” He feels dirty saying it. He is going to need a long, hot shower when he gets home.
“Then he’s alive? Is he well?”
She cares about Eliot. It’s a shock after the indifference of his previous owners.
“He is.” I’m doing the best I can. “You’re a friend?”
“Domestics don’t have friends.” She softens the rote phrase with a smile. “Sometimes I spent time with 704, when he wasn’t working or in storage.”
“Storage?”
Without a word, she leads Nikolai to a door not far from the kitchen, set off the main living room. A coat closet, he thinks. Then he opens the door, and sees the vacuum, the mop, the washcloth, and containers of cleaning chemicals. Towels and washcloths. A storage closet, for cleaning supplies.
Oh, Eliot.
For once, he doesn’t find Eliot cleaning the house when he gets home. He’s on the living room couch, with Jonas hovering over him. He sits up when he sees Kolya, before a hard coughing fit takes. Overexertion.
Expiration date.
When the coughing passes, he takes Eliot in his arms and holds him tight, holds him close.
“It’s over, Sir? I’m yours?”
“Yes. You’re mine and I will keep you safe, Eliot. For the rest of your life.”

Adam's story part III
Adam's morning began with a battle, not against dragons or deadlines, but against the audacious snugness of his work pants. He wiggled into them, each tug a reminder of his vanished abdominal muscles, now replaced by a soft, jiggly belly that refused to be tamed. His shirt, equally rebellious, seemed to have shrunk overnight, intent on revealing just a hint more skin than workplace appropriate.
"Here goes nothing," he muttered, leaving his apartment with a mix of apprehension and a desperate hope that his clothes would remain intact.
Arriving at the supermarket, Adam took his place behind the cash register, trying to look casual while covertly pulling his shirt down and pants up. His new uniform was a game of wardrobe whack-a-mole he hadn't signed up for.
"Hey, Adam!" called out Jenna, another cashier. "Did you get a new outfit?"
"Yeah, you could say that," Adam replied with a forced grin, his hands stealthily adjusting his traitorous trousers.
As customers lined up, Adam's discomfort grew. Each scan of an item was accompanied by a strategic shuffle to keep his clothes in check. He felt like a contortionist in a circus act he hadn't rehearsed for.
Then came Mrs. Higgins, a regular known for her sharp eyes and sharper tongue. "My, my, Adam, you look... different. Is that the new style?"
Adam chuckled nervously, "Just trying something new, Mrs. Higgins."
She peered over her glasses, "Well, don't try too hard. You're spilling out like a stuffed turkey."
Crimson spread across Adam's face, more effective than any barcode scanner. He finished her transaction with a polite smile and a silent prayer for his shift to end.
The day trudged on with a few more light-hearted jabs from colleagues and customers alike. Each comment was a nudge, reminding him of his changing body.
Lunch break brought a moment of respite. He texted his friend, Mike: "I feel like a stuffed sausage in these clothes."
Mike replied with a laugh, "Just don't pop, man. You're too young to explode. Anyway, up for a drink tonight ? It's on me ! "
Adam replied "Can't refuse such generous offer, see you at the usual place at the usual time !"
Adam couldn't help but smile. Somehow, Mike always knew how to lighten the mood.
Later in the evening, Adam trudged towards the local bar, the promise of a few free drinks from Mike being the only thing lifting his spirits after a day of wardrobe warfare. The night air was cool, a stark contrast to the warmth of embarrassment he had felt all day.
He found Mike already there, a pint in hand, his usual boisterous self. "Adam, my man!" Mike greeted with a hearty laugh. "Ready to drown your sartorial sorrows?"
Adam managed a smile. "Only if you're ready to fund the expedition."
As they settled into a quiet corner, the conversation naturally drifted to Adam's day and his struggles with his weight. Adam sighed, "I just let myself go, Mike. It's like I'm wearing someone else's body."
Mike nodded, his expression turning serious. "I get it, man. But you're not alone in this." To Adam's surprise, Mike lifted his shirt, revealing a tightly fitted corset underneath. "Look, I've gained 10kg, and you didn't even notice."
Adam's eyes widened. "You're kidding! When did this happen?"
Mike chuckled, "While you were busy battling your pants, I was waging war with this corset."
The revelation that his always fit and confident friend was facing similar issues was a shock to Adam, but not an entirely unpleasant one. "We're in the same boat, then," Mike said with a wink.
Adam didn't feel better about his situation, but Mike had a talent for lightening the mood. He started teasing Adam, mimicking his struggle with his pants in an exaggerated fashion, causing Adam to burst into laughter.
"Yeah, yeah," Adam chuckled, "At least your corset doesn't try to escape every time you bend over."
The night wore on, filled with more laughter and candid conversations about their weight gain. Mike's ability to laugh at himself and encourage Adam to do the same was a refreshing change.
As they left the bar, Adam felt a sense of camaraderie he hadn't expected. Sure, his problems hadn't disappeared, but sharing them with someone who understood made them seem a little less daunting.
"Next time," Adam said as they parted ways, "we're going shopping for some 'expansion-friendly' clothes."
Mike laughed, "And maybe a couple of corsets for good measure!"

Main Character Cust Support
So, this grew out of a discussion that @f0xywrites, me, and a third party who wishes to remain anonymous, had on the AUgust Writing Challenge fanfic server.
One of us said "I think I've wrecked my character beyond all repair. Maybe I should return him for a refund." And that sparked an idea--which rapidly turned into this!
So here's Episode One of the "Character Support Chronicles". Let us know if you enjoy it!
Rating: Gen; Words: 1581
TW: very passing mentions of rape and childhood traumas
Episode One:
Marge smiled politely at the angry author in front of her station. “I am sorry, sir, but this character clearly does not meet the standards of our return policy.” She pointed at the large sign on the wall behind all of the desk agents.
Main Characters must be returned in their original condition.
No cash refunds. MCs may only be exchanged for characters of similar age and gender or credit toward future characters.
No returns after the character has appeared in an uploaded fic.
Excessive returns by authors may revoke your rights to future credit.
Marge indicated the character in front of her, still enclosed in her tiny shimmering orb, the blues, greens, and pinks swirling about her like a translucent abalone shell. “She appears in 3D. Clearly she’s been featured in a work that has been made available to the public. All of our MCs are released in 2D until uploaded.”
“I don’t care!” The author fumed. “She doesn't trust men at all–not even me!”
Marge picked up her scanner and aimed it at the MC’s barcode. She studied the profile. “Sir, you specifically said you wanted her for a Rape and Revenge storyline–”
“But–” he pointed a finger in her face. At that moment her desk phone rang. “One moment, sir,” she said, before picking it up.
“Customer Service, this is Marge, how may I help you?”
“Yes, I’d like to make a complaint. I ordered a fully fleshed out Main Character–Roger B, and I was writing him today and this guy has no hobbies–and no friends! This is NOT what I had in mind when I placed this order!”
“I’m so sorry to hear that you’re dissatisfied, ma’am. May I call you ma’am? Do you have your order number or character barcode?” Marge listened, then pulled up the character specs. “Thank you, I have your information in front of me. It appears the character is still unused. If you would like, we can send a replacement, one that functions a bit better and is more on the social side. Great, I’ll get that out to you shortly. Would you prefer a smaller, more intimate friend group or a larger group with fewer close connections?  Thank you, it was my pleasure to assist you, we just ask that you be more specific in your order for next time. Hope that you enjoy the experience!"
With an internal sigh, Marge turned back to Mr. Angry. She held up a hand warningly. “I absolutely can not process this as a return. However I can give you a one time free upgrade of “Character Undergoes Intensive Therapy” that may resolve some of the issues you’re having with her.”
He thought it over. “Will she be able to find true love?”
Marge wasn’t about to over promise. “With a man? I can not guarantee that, sir, no.”
“That’s okay,” he said. “She can like anybody she wants. I just want her to have a family.”
Marge smiled. Maybe Mr. Angry wasn’t so bad after all.
*****
“Customer Service, this is Bill, how may I help you?”
"Yeah, I ordered a character with a messed up childhood, and I'm not satisfied."
"I'm sorry to hear that, sir. If your character is too well-adjusted, we could have our Freak Squad take a look at him or her..."
"No, that's not what I meant--this character--damn--I wanted some Hurt/Comfort, but way too much fucked up shit has happened to this guy!"
“I am very sorry to hear that, sir, but retrofitting like that is simply not something our company does. You’ll be much happier taking your Character for some after-market work at Fluff Corp. May I transfer you to them now?”
“I guess if that’s my best option, then fine.”
“And, sir, if I may make a suggestion? So that Fluff Corp knows what you’re after, you might try “difficult” instead of “messed up” when placing your childhood order. Thank you, please hold the line…”
*****
“Hello this is Fluff Corp, where your teeth may rot but your stories never will! My name is Keiko. How may I help you today?”
“Yeah, I’m Ed. I got a fucked up character.”
“Oh, I see! Sorry to hear that, Ed. May I suggest one of our specialist departments? I could get you over to someone in Soulmates for a ‘Love Heals’ story arc, or Found Family is always so popular for that–but if you really need a total reboot I can recommend our FixIt Fic hotline.”
Keiko felt a tap on her shoulder and looked up to see her coworker Abdul who was just coming back from break. He whispered, “Another fucked up?”
She covered the mouthpiece of her phone and nodded. “Another one. Came in on the aftermarket number so it’s not one of our Originals.”
Brenda from PWP was passing by and overheard them. “What the hell are they doing over at Plots, Inc these days? Some of these cases are brutal.”
“Are you still there?” Ed’s voice resonated from the headset in Keiko’s hand.
“Oh, I beg your pardon, Ed, yes, I’m here,” Keiko said, shrugging at Brenda and Abdul. As she resumed her call, she heard Brenda whisper to him, “I had a guy the other day who couldn’t figure out why his MC kept safewording in a scene. Turns out Plots gave him claustrophobia from being locked in the closet as a child and then happily released him in a sub role with no TWs!”
Abdul was horrified. “That’s just irresponsible.”
Meanwhile, Ed was growing insistent. “I just want the fastest, most effective route.”
Keiko studied the profile he had uploaded to her tablet, and accessed the Guilty Conscience panel. Nothing. She tried Commitment Issues next, then Addiction. Still nothing. That narrowed it down a great deal. Feeling confident now, she brought up Unresolved Trauma.
“Bingo,” she said.
“Bingo?” Ed asked, puzzled.
“I’ve located the problem.” She grabbed her stylus and sketched out a quick spider diagram. “Are you sure you want fastest and most effective? Just so you are aware, that may involve an upcharge and perhaps memory loss by your MC.”
“And don’t forget, there can be severe aftereffects later if your character experiences a triggering event,” Abdul piped up from behind her. Keiko opened her mouth to pass that along but apparently Ed had heard him.
“I’m sure. I need this character ready to go as soon as possible! The idea train hasn’t exactly been kind lately. I can’t miss it when it decides to show up!”
“Understood. I’m going to conference in someone from Time Travel. We will drone drop a “childhood best friend’ and a “deus ex machina by a trusted adult” at appropriate points in your character’s development. That should get them out of the headspace they’re currently stuck in. I’m still going to note your file, though, because a healthy dose of Found Family or Voyage of Self Discovery is strongly recommended in these cases.”
“Noted,” Ed said.
“And please update the character profile with any applicable trigger warnings so that when our Butterfly Effect department runs the simulation to approve the Time Travel fix, they don’t overlook any complicating variables.”
“I’ll do that right now. How long will this all take?”
Keiko checked her phone. The green light was on, indicating Time Travel had an operator available. “I’m conferencing them in right now, and assuming all goes well, you should be ready to write in around 45 minutes,” she estimated.
“Fantastic!” Ed enthused. “When we’re done here, do you have a supervisor I can talk to about your superior help today?”
Keiko felt herself blushing. “That’s very kind of you, Ed, now I’m still on the line but let me welcome Cynthia to the conversation…”
*****
Keiko and Abdul were exhausted at the end of their shift. Keiko just put her head down on the desk and contemplated going to sleep right there. Abdul pulled out a few sticks of gum. He’d recently quit smoking and the second he was finished with the phones he would start chewing.
“Guys! Guys! Guys!” Keiko heard Brenda’s voice. Reluctantly she sat up. The other woman was hurrying over.
“You guys will never believe what’s been going on over at Plots, Inc! Their new VP of Character Development came from Angst and Self-Loathing. Before that she was over SickFics-”
“Oh my God–no wonder!” Keiko couldn’t believe it.
“Yep, classic Hurt Without Comfort/Whump Is My Life type! And she’s overseeing all their new main characters!”
Abdul groaned. “Wonderful. Plots, Inc is now the Angst No Comfort Bureau. And you know who is going to get all the fallout from this, right?”
Keiko nodded. “They’d better get it together or we’re going to be spending all our work hours trying to bring everybody’s Dead Doves back to life.”
“I need a vacation,” Abdul muttered. He looked hopefully over at Brenda. “Do you think they might need someone in Pillow Fights or Cuddle Piles for a few weeks?”
Brenda snorted. “Not a chance, man.” She bit her lip and thought it over. “You know, though, they were wanting someone to shadow an exec over in Slice of Life next quarter. Want me to talk to somebody for you?
Abdul snapped his gum. “Yes please. I’ll go back to smoking if I have to play MC therapist all day every day.”
Brenda turned to Keiko. “How about you?”
Keiko smiled, remembering Ed and his character. “Nah, I’m good,” she said. “I love what I do.”

Tumblr media
Exploring the Different Types of Barcode Scanners
In today's fast-paced, technology-driven world, barcode scanners are an essential tool for businesses of all sizes. From retail stores and warehouses to libraries and hospitals, barcode scanners streamline operations, improve accuracy, and enhance productivity. With a variety of barcode scanners available on the market, it’s important to understand the different types and their applications to make an informed decision for your business needs.
What is a Barcode Scanner? A barcode scanner is a device that reads and decodes the information contained in a barcode. A barcode is a series of parallel lines of varying widths and spaces, representing data that can be quickly read by machines. Barcode scanners capture this data and translate it into digital information that can be processed by computer systems.
Types of Barcode Scanners Barcode scanners can be categorized based on their technology, form factor, and intended use. Here, we explore the different types of barcode scanners and their specific applications.
Pen-Type Scanners Pen-type scanners, also known as wand scanners, are the simplest form of barcode scanners. They consist of a light source and a photodiode that are moved over the barcode to read it.

What is a periodic Inventory in SAP Business One?
Tumblr media
Businesses within the realm of inventory management use various methodologies to effectively supervise and control their stock. One system among those is the Periodic Inventory. Here, they do not keep a constant watch over the stocks but instead regularly verify them at certain periods.
What is meant by Periodic Inventory?
Periodic inventory is a conventional approach in which businesses count their supplies manually after a predetermined accounting period like monthly or annually. This differs from continuous record-keeping methods where technology keeps track of stock levels in real-time always.
How does it work?
Under this method, companies perform physical counts on items making up their inventories at fixed intervals. To reduce disruptions, they may shut down operations temporarily or choose off-peak hours for counting. When all the items are counted, recorded figures are compared with accounting records to detect any differences between them.
SAP Business One in Periodic Inventory:
Track your inventory: It gives you a great deal of power and flexibility when it comes to tracking what you have on hand, where it is located, how much of it there is and every other important detail about your inventory.
Batch & Serial number tracking: Tracking by batch or serial numbers can ensure that traceability is enhanced to meet regulatory requirements.
Integration with barcode scanning: By integrating itself with barcodes scanners the software makes it easy for users during stock taking which also reduces errors hence better accuracy.
Reporting and analysis capabilities: SAP business one incorporates reporting tools coupled with robust analytics functionality which are designed to enable one to understand how their stocks are performing as well make informed decisions based on such findings.
Automated Reordering System: The automated reordering process works this way; you set up some reorder points against certain items in the system then when they fall below those levels new orders get triggered automatically thereby ensuring that stock levels never reach zero but also don’t go beyond required limits.
Advantages of Periodic Inventory:
Reasonability: It is usually cheaper to implement and maintain systems of inventory that are periodic, particularly for small businesses with low budgets.
Simplicity: Keeping track becomes easier when counts are taken from time to time, because it eliminates the need for complicated infrastructures in technology.
Versatility: Businesses can schedule when they want their stocktaking done around their operations or financial capability.
Precision: Though manual, accuracy is still achievable in carrying out regular stock takes if done conscientiously; especially if SAP Business One is used alongside other technologies.
Conformity: Compliance with regulation standards and meeting audit requirements are some benefits which can be derived from having interval checks on stocks at different points in a period according to this report.
Conclusion:
In today’s business world, effectiveness of inventory controls is important for competitiveness and prosperity. Though giving live updates on stock, there are still many firms that can use periodic inventory counting as it is simple, cheap and meets regulatory requirements. Periodic inventory can be made efficient by use of SAP Business One through streamlining the process and making decisions based on well analyzed data which enhances success in an enterprise.

This week, the result of the venture proposal had a flaw, so our team decided to change our features. We conducted a meeting during this week to make a team decision.
The CLIST Group decided to opt for a total change. Choosing total change over slight adjustments can be advantageous in various situations where incremental changes may not be sufficient to address underlying problems or achieve desired outcomes. While total change can have advantages, it also carries risks and challenges, including resistance to change, disruption, and the need for substantial resources and planning. It is important to carefully assess the specific context and weigh the potential benefits against the potential drawbacks before deciding to pursue total change.
The features we decided to exclude are:
Barcode Scanner
Delivery of grocery items to households
Although we chose total change, we did not change our name. The new version of CLIST focuses on delivering food within the campus and to individuals residing in College Park and Sampaguita. We validated this with our target market and soon-to-be partners, both of whom gave us positive feedback regarding the implementation of such services on campus.

Increased options: Food delivery services expand the range of culinary choices available on campus. Instead of being limited to on-campus dining halls or a handful of nearby restaurants, students can explore a broader selection of local restaurants, national chains, food trucks, and specialty cuisine options.
Community support: Food delivery partnerships with local restaurants and vendors can promote the local economy and support small businesses. By offering delivery services, these establishments gain access to a wider customer base and exposure within the campus community.
Enhanced socialization: Food delivery can facilitate social connections and foster a sense of community on campus. Students can order food together for group study sessions or enjoy meals with friends in their dormitories or common areas, encouraging interaction and bonding.
Adaptability: Food delivery services have the potential to adapt to changing circumstances or emergencies. During inclement weather or unforeseen situations, such as a campus lockdown or health crisis, delivery services can help ensure that individuals have access to meals and essentials without leaving their residences.
Overall, the essence of food delivery on campus revolves around providing a convenient, accessible, and diverse food experience while meeting the evolving needs of the campus community.

the color from the flower is sublimating, leaving light-dust trails. it is nighttime and i am sitting in a culvert which is pitch dark. the rain leaves haloes of light outside. there are small frogs around me. i will rest, but i won’t be sleeping tonight. there is no place to rest my head. the walls are slick.
i imagine you here next to me. the intimacy in our shared silence. the intimacy of our proximity in this liminal space. i think of other places i would have like to be in with you. the shower. the shower would be a liminal space because we are strictly friends. the back of the whole foods, where generators and industrial fans make that refrigerator whirr, periodic cycles of noise and rest. where the gulley in the asphalt funnels rainwater into grates, then drains below. where checkout cashiers in green aprons break for a cigarette, shaking loose of that sound when the scanner reads the barcode -- bop, bop, bop -- like tetris behind the eyes. the air is sunbaked. they are watching or ignoring us, free on a weekday, where the buildings’ backs are turned, and we walk along, bumping shoulders, brushing hands, lightly, slightly, in a conspiracy of being understood, like you could say whatever you want and not be judged.
here is what i have for you -- this vision of tomorrow or a yesterday -- daylight, day -- as the color seeps from this flower into dark. nothing to fear, only what? of it ending now? if it ended now, i wouldn’t be able to mind.
of a day that never comes.
but the day won’t come, definitely won’t come, for sure won’t come, if you die tonight.
