Hey everyone out there in internet land. I haven't been posting much, I have just been running wide open! Some exciting news to come, not quite ready to let that cat out of the bag yet. So let's get on to the full scale buck construction class recap. The goal for the class was to take a silhouette of a 1930's race car body and turn it into a full scale buck. This started with a set of old race car plans but it was decided to change the tail and the width and taper of the car........ So we worked through how to change the all the radii for the new width and taper. With the new radii we checked our work for flow and started making the stations for the buck. You can see in the pictures we uses the stations to locate the back of the nose, hood line, fire wall, cowl and cockpit opening and so on. I like to build bucks so the stations are the start and stop points for the panels . This class was intended to be just buck work but the guys took to the methods so quickly that we actually had time left to shape some pieces!!!!I will quit yammering and let the pictures tell the rest of the story, but just a quick heads up for the June Pattern and Panel development class it will be held in my home shop in Hastings Nebraska the 15th-18th. This class will cover all the pattern work start to finish needed to shape a whole panel and the shaping of that panel. Lunch, supper and refreshments provided each class day, the cost for this class is $800 per person with a maximum of four people, there are 3 open spots as of today. Hey everyone out there in internet land, I am excited to announce that I will be offering two classes at Steve Greenway's shop again this year in Cumberland Wisconsin! September 28th,29th & 30th, 1st the cost for each class is $350 so if you want to attend both that will be $700. Meals, refreshments and all materails are included in the cost of the class. The classes this year will still have a focus on hand tools but will be more project based this year. In years past we have done smaller pieces and focused a lot on more tips and tricks, this year we will be applying those methods to a project from start to finish. This means that we will do all the pattern and lay out work and planning out the steps needed. September 28th,29th we will be doing the pattern work and we will also be making any tooling needed for the project. Using the patterns we will lay out the panels and start the shaping using out patterns as a road map to get to where we are going. In my opinion the pattern work is the most over looked part of metal shaping and with the project I have planned it will be very clear that the patterns tell us what to do and where to do it. September 30th, October 1st We will finish shaping up the panels and start fitting them up and tacking them together. We will be using tig and a torch looking at the benefits of each and the differences between the two. With the parts welded together we will hammer the welds and metal finish the weld seam. We will de bunk some of the common "rules of thumb" with the welding, there is a big difference with how we want to weld these parts together vs a production type repair. I am excited, its going to be another good time!
