The Florida Legislature unanimously passed a bill that would allow police to immediately remove squatters — a departure from the lengthy court cases required in most states.
"It gives me a real feeling of positive hope that we still have the ability to discuss challenges in our society and work with our legislatures in a bipartisan way," Patti Peeples, a Sunshine State property owner who was barred from her own home after squatters refused to leave, told News4Jax.
The legislation, which passed both chambers earlier this month, would allow police to remove squatters without a lease authorized by the property owner and adds criminal penalties. Landlords, under the current law, typically have to wade through a long and expensive legal process to remove squatters.

"Imagine for a moment that you leave from your day of serving the citizens of Florida as a senator and you return to your home," Peeples told the state Senate Criminal Justice Committee in February. "But when you walk in, there are strangers sitting on your sofa, watching your TV, eating your food."
"You ask who they are and what they are doing, and they tell you that they have rented this house and present you with a lease," she continued.
An advocacy group, Florida Rising, initially opposed the legislation, fearing landlords could abuse the measures to quickly boot legitimate tenants. But the group took a neutral position after amendments were added to protect legal occupants, a spokesperson told News4Jax.
The bill, now headed to Gov. Ron DeSantis’ desk, would also allow wrongfully evicted tenants to sue to regain access and recover attorneys’ fees and damages.
Last year, it took weeks for the squatters in Peeples’ home to get evicted. They had produced a lease and claimed they were rental scam victims — a strategy the squatters used previously, court records show.
By the time they were ousted, Peeples’ house was left with thousands of dollars worth of damage.
"I've had so many emotions," Peeples told Fox News in April. "I've had just intense anger, I have felt defeated, I felt wronged by the legal system, I felt wronged by the police system."
The squatters never faced criminal charges.
If the Florida legislation becomes law, intentionally presenting a phony lease would be designated as a misdemeanor, and selling or leasing someone else’s property would be a felony, as would causing more than $1,000 in property damage.
Flash Shelton, a handyman-turned-squatter hunter, recently told Fox News that squatting laws needed to become stricter so landlords could more easily boot illegal occupants. He pointed to Atlanta, where, according to the National Rental Home Council, around 1,200 homes have been taken over by squatters.
"If we were to criminalize it, that would enable us to send in the National Guard to sweep that whole neighborhood and get those 1,200 houses clear," Shelton told Fox News in February.

Miller Hughes was born a small town boy and he’d, apparently, die a small town boy. A kinship adoption and grandparents that lived just down the road, made the Hughes family extremely close. It was hard to be lonely as a Hughes, and that was by design, but sometimes as a teenage boy, it could feel suffocating to be surrounded by family or someone who knew you as Victoria’s son! or Charles’ grandson! So when it came time for college, Miller took his love for food (fostered and encouraged by his family) to a professional scale by attending the Culinary Institute of America and diving headfirst into the competitive world of restaurants in New York City. He made friends, fell in love, and was generally anonymous in the big city. And he thought that’s what he wanted. Until his fiance sat him down and told him, mid wedding planning, that she was in love with her childhood best friend and couldn’t keep doing this. Within an hour she was gone, taking friends with her and leaving the usually chipper and friendly Miller feeling isolated and cold. Feeling alone, he did what he always knew how to do. He called his family. They didn’t waste a second. A friend of his father’s had a job opening at a restaurant on the island and Miller had an interview a few days later. His grandparents were downsizing to an apartment that needed less maintenance than their home, and needed help maintaining their rental property next to the house. So Miller packed his life in the city up, moved back home and started trying to rebuild himself piece by piece, trying to ignore the fairytale written about him by those people that saw him as Just Another Hughes.

Fuck fuck fuck fuck. 2024 is already shaping up to be the worst year ever. My dad is losing his job because the company went bankrupt and is closing all their stores. I keep being rejected from jobs I apply (keep your fingers crossed I get this most recent application). And now my fucking landlord has sent his handyman to tell us he's thinking of selling the house me and my family rent from him in May. What the fuck are we supposed to?! We can afford to buy a house! And rental properties around here are expensive now cause the market is garbage. And I don't want to move! I like this house! I like my neighbors! I'm so upset. We can't get the asshole on the phone either cause we never can to ask of this is even true and what his fucking plans are. We've lived here for 14 years and have only ever asked for basic repairs and even then we've only done that rarely and we've asked for nothing else! This sucks!!!

Hello, and welcome to the official blog for Fairfax Family Ministries! I’m Emily Anne, and this is my husband, Peter. We’re newlyweds living in a quaint little home in the town center of Henford-on-Bagley.

Peter works as a handyman for the Fairfax Family rental properties and I currently work from home as an online teacher for the same homeschool curriculum that I used growing up!

During our courtship, we spent many hours praying together and seeking counsel from both of our parents about whether or not I should continue teaching once we got married. Fortunately, everyone agreed that I should since I’m able to work from home and don’t have any little ones running around just yet. Obviously when we do have children being a mother will become my main focus, but in the meantime, I’m so glad to have the opportunity to be a resource and a blessing to homeschool students and their parents. Peter and I have even discussed writing our own homeschool curriculum together someday.

When Peter and I aren’t working, we both enjoy tending to the little garden that I planted in our backyard. We only have flowers and herbs for now, but in the future, we hope to expand our garden to grow our own fruits and vegetables right here at home! Since we both want a big family one day (Watcher-willing), this will be a cost-effective way to feed our children as healthy as possible.

At first, I was a little bit worried about moving to Henford-on-Bagley after the wedding since I grew up in Newcrest, but Peter is such a charismatic guy that he manages to make everyone we meet feel like old friends. Here he is chatting with some ladies that we met on our walk the other day. He noticed how one of the women was dressed and insisted on taking the time to share the gospel with her to remind her how sacred her body is. It’s such a shame how in this day and age so many women use the hot weather as an excuse to show their bodies off to anyone who walks past. I’m so grateful to have a husband who encourages me to maintain the principles of modesty that I was raised with. No short shorts for me!
That’s about it for us right now. We’re enjoying this honeymoon stage of getting to know each other as husband and wife, but also eagerly waiting and praying for what the Watcher has in store for our future! We’ve also been praying and seeking guidance from the Watcher regarding Peter’s career path. While my teaching salary is enough to supplement our income for now, it won’t be just the two of us for much longer. ;-) So hopefully in the Watcher’s timing Peter will find a new job that can sustain our growing family. Until next time!

Time

The consequences of getting it wrong can be serious. If attention to detail is not one of your strengths, you might be better off getting an agent who knows their stuff to do it for you.
Your situation could of course change – perhaps you’ll grow to have less time and more money. The right decision now might not be the right decision in five years. Whatever you decide, don’t underestimate how much time and effort it takes to manage well.
