One of my favorite things about Hannibal is that Jack is very normal and does not anticipate a lot of the things that happen because why the fuck would those be things that happen

Will is saying he needs to quit consulting for them because it’s bad for his brain and Jack guilts him into staying, fully unaware that “bad for his brain” does not mean it’s giving him stress it’s causing him to fully break from reality and believe he is occasionally the same person as a serial killer while actively losing time and his sense of self

Or that the psychiatrist they set him up with was psychosexually obsessed with him and also a cannibal serial killer actively worsening his undiagnosed encephalitis for his own morbid curiosity while also trying to convince him to become his serial killer best friend

Like it’s a dick move as a boss but to his credit I don’t think he could have anticipated what Will meant when he said he was having a hard time

one thing about hannibal and will that i always think about and which isnt addressed in fan content a lot (that i've seen) is that they just like each other! yes they're awful and manipulative to each other and yes they have this weird sort of planetary gravity that infects their interactions and they (or will, mostly, because by the time hannibal turns himself in for will it's pretty clear that's he's accepted it) resent that they can't leave each other's orbit. but they also like each other a lot! they're used to being the smartest one in the room (even though will is antisocial about it and doesn't advertise it unless asked) so i think it must be really refreshing to be able to parry their words back n forth and speak in metaphor instead of spelling everything out. and make references that most people won't get. and call a trout a very nietzschen fish without the person who hears going "🤨 you freak". because theyre both freaks! so you know if they actually did survive the cliff fall i always picture em in some ritzy hideaway making cannibal puns at each other

idk how to say it intelligently but will's empathy in s2 was so slay that he accidentally fell for his own honey trap. he hated that bitch ass cannibal for ruining his life that he spent every moment wanting him DEAD and decided he'd return the favor by any means necessary. but oops! will was just a little too good at mutilating monsters and sending fuckme eyes to his hot frenemy that the butterflies in his stomach turned real and it took him a day too long to figure it out before- double oops- he's left gutted in the kitchen :/

if hannibal got a season 4 that would be cool but we'd have to confront that theres literally no way for the show to end without them dying. the ending to s3 was like...pretty damn good. they threw away their old lives and themselves off the cliff and you can theorize what happens after to your heart's content. but if the show were to continue beyond that point, what other transformation left can they go through besides death...?

Half-formed thought here, but. Usually in my mind I assume that the topic of Abigail goes almost completely unspoken between Will and Hannibal post-canon, but... man. What if they were even more unhinged about it than that. Like, what if they displayed a massive portrait of her on the mantlepiece or something, as a symbol of Will getting Hannibalpilled and buying into the idea that her death was a sad but inevitable consequence of the force of nature that is Hannibal. And then everyone who visited the house assumed she was just a beloved relative of one of them or something, without knowing anything about the details of how she died (or even that she was dead). And whatever murder buddies/protégés/frenemies/pseudo-children/sexy little thirds/[whatever unholy combination of those things] Will and Hannibal acquired would piece together some very idealized understanding of her as the Perfect Dead Sister-Daughter that they could never measure up to, whose ghostly presence hangs over them... and then coming to the very macabre discovery that Hannibal was the one who killed her! I think that'd be neat.

I have now watched all three seasons of Hannibal and come to the conclusion that it is a very creative, well-made, well-acted show that just wasn't for me. Like I completely see why Tumblr was all over the show, you've got a deeply homoerotic relationship between an older, brilliant, sophisticated manipulative man (who just happens to kill and eat people), and a younger sopping wet kitten of a man who who is both mentally and physically unwell (for all those whump fans out there) and is awkward and loves dogs. It's practically a manga despite being a live-action American show. Plus all the blood and stabbing and betrayal, that's fun!

But it just didn't grab me, and I mostly finished it out of a combination of curiosity and routine and being a completionist. I think it's partially that I don't really like Hannibal as a character. Not just because he kills and eats people (I can totally appreciate a murderous character), but because I sometimes get annoyed with the impossibly brilliant, sophisticated character who knows everything and is good at everything. Because even extremely smart people have to take some time and effort to gain expertise or develop skills. So when does Hannibal find time to sleep while he's making beautiful sketches, playing the piano perfectly, learning everything there is to know about Italian language, history and culture, working as a practicing psychiatrist, cooking gourmet meals (of human meat), going to concerts, throwing dinner parties, charming and manipulating a few of his victims into extreme loyalty, and also killing people, disposing of whatever body parts he doesn't eat, and sometimes staging elaborate crime scenes that would require a crane and probably a crew of at least four people helping. I know it's not meant to be realistic, but after a certain point it crosses the line into silly for me. To be fair, it's not just Hannibal, I have issues with the brilliant "always five steps ahead" villain when their plan involves shit they couldn't have possibly known or planned for. Or the super-hero geniuses that are experts in every field rather than actually having some specialization. Do NOT give your 30-something year old character six PhDs, that shit takes time no matter how smart they are.

Despite that, even I loved the ending. Our two homoerotic "friends" team up to take out a serial killer and then collapse into each other's arms covered in both his blood and their own, and Hannibal says "This is what I always wanted for us," and then they fall into the sea together? Yes, perfect. Also, thank you, show, for not killing my precious Scott Thompson. I figured he was safe because as a lab tech he was never going into the actual dangerous scenarios, but you never know.

Can't say I regret watching the series, either. At least now I know what all the fuss was about.

Look I know we all say “Hannibal is a comedy.”, but like I would love to see an actual comedy version of this exact show. Like lots of the same fucked up shit happens just push the absolute chaos of it all to absolutely nonsensical levels. (Also have Frederick Chilton get into even more situations. Like have him get crushed by a safe for no reason or spontaneously combust and have him come out of it all somehow still alive.)
