Brennan’s little joke about Fearnot made me think of something —
To those who are really enjoying this season, and in particular the fairytale aspect, I really want to recommend Jim Henson’s “The Storyteller”
If you like somewhat lesser-heard fairytales, practical effects, and classic storytelling, you will definitely enjoy it! It’s a little series, with each episode telling a story narrated by the late great John Hurt, and includes such tales as Fearnot, Sapsorrow, The Heartless Giant, etc. There is also a second series with Greek Myths if that interests you as well!
I personally have a disc set, but I believe it can be found on Amazon Prime Video. Though I’m also quite certain you can find full episodes on YouTube.
Anyway, if that intrigues you I really suggest you look for it! (It’s got a wonderful soundtrack as well!)

Three of Wands. Art by Nara Lesser, from Neurotic Owl’s Faerytale Tarot.
Wands, wands, wands.  I went with Hans My Hedgehog for this card, which some of you may actually know from Jim Henson’s Storyteller for a change!  But basically it’s a Beauty and the Beast variant – Hans is top half hedgehog, bottom half man, so like the Cat’s ideal mermaid from Red Dwarf but, y’know, pointy and fuzzy.
He makes a deal with two different merchants that the first thing to greet them on their return home is his.  Merchant A gets greeted by his daughter but just nopes out of the deal, and so Hans pokes the poor girl with his quills and excuse me, she did not make this dumbass deal with you, go stab her father you half-hedgehog dick.
Merchant B, to his credit, doesn’t WANT to send his daughter to marry this weirdo but she insists.  Naturally once she comes to marry him he whips off his hedgehog pelt, tosses it in the fire, and is revealed as a handsome dude and they theoretically live happily ever after.  Clearly they have a similar sense of what constitutes a binding agreement so I guess that’s something?
Also I changed the bride’s height several times because I intended her to be a trans woman (as usual that’s mostly in my head because all of my characters look fairly cartoony and femme regardless) so I thought about making her taller, but also I didn’t want to reduce the impact of Hans looming over her.  If you kind of measure out where a human head would land on him without the hedgehog body they’ll be close to the same height post-transformation, which I find really nice with a partner personally.

The “Hans, My Hedgehog” episode of Jim Henson’s The Storyteller is probably the only time I’ve ever heard the word “snoodle” used in a dramatic context (or any context, really), but I got to say when the princess says she wants to snoodle Hans it works, man, what can I tell you

Day 22 of Inktober, an Obscured Story called "Hans My Hedgehog" (or sometimes known as "Jack My Hedgehog", translated by Andrew Lang).
A German Fairy Tale written by the Brothers Grimm.
The Story behind this Hedgehog tells that a Childless Farmer Couple really needed a child so the Wife gives birth to an Actual Hedgehog. As Hans grew up, he decided to move into a New Life through Adulthood to live on his own, so he rode on his Rooster and even carried his own Bagpipe across the woods. One Day, a King got lost in the Woods and meets up Hans who asks him the way on how to back to his own home and Another King (after the First One) also gets lost too, so Hans makes a Deal with each of them to marry their own Daughters.
When Hans got passed through the First King's Guards, he is instantly tricked by the First King's deal that they had but the First Princess marries her New Husband anyway. After a Disastrously Marriage that Hans forced his First Wife to strip down and feel his prickles, they ended up in a divorce (as the First Wife went back to her Father). Hans goes to the Second King's Kingdom where he marries the Second King's Daughter (A Second Princess). Unlike Hans' First Marriage, his Second Marriage actually succeeds for the better. Only this time, Hans takes off his own quills to burn it and was transformed into a Handsome Man.
After a few years, Hans returns back to his Old Home and asks his Parents to live with Him in their New Land.

(Uploading this for the fourth time... Don't you just love when Tumblr craps out on you? :))) )
Some test/practice sketches of characters from "Hans my Hedgehog", as seen in Jim Henson's "The Storyteller". These are meant as a study, for a bigger thing I have in mind at some point. Characters featured:
1 & 2 - Hans my Hedgehog (and yeah, Anthony Minghella, the scriptwriter, did intend to make him this buff... make of that what you will)
3 - Princess of Sweetness and Cherry Pie, Hans' bride.
4 - Hans' steed - the giant rooster
5 - close-up of chibi Hans from the third image.
"Hans my Hedgehog" is my comfort story - probably my favorite from the show (I may be heavily biased bc I used to watch this episode a thousand times as a kid).
I strongly vibe with Hans as a character. Not to mention, there's also this "monster boyfriend" trope in it that I adore (even tho he turns to a human at the end, sadly)

Stories I want to base Ever After High OCs off (an ever growing list)
Hans My Hedgehog (One of my favourite ‘obscure’ fairytales. Already decided her name would be Hannah M. Hedgehog. To fit the design aesthetic of eah she wouldn’t literally have the upper body of a hedgehog and the lower body of a human, she’d be more of a hybrid. She’s a rebel because she rejects her destiny of becoming fully human at the end of the story and embraces her hedgehog side.)
Boy Who Cried Wolf (See my last reblog. Lies a lot but because of their destiny no one tends to believe them anyways. Also accidentally right a lot. Not lying maliciously just doing it for shits and giggles)
The Frog Princess (Because I think it’d be funny for there to be two royals who turn into frogs but are completely unrelated to each other. Also there’s so many variants of this story from region to region that it’d be fun to write this girl)
Speaking of, The Frog Prince (Specifically the daughter of the princess from the tale and the son of the prince’s gayass servant. Princess Girl does not want to be Hopper’s princess but is slightly willing to enact the version where she gets to throw Frog Hopper at a wall instead of kissing him. Dislikes frogs a bit but plays it up as a seething hatred to scare Hopper. Kind of a bitch if you couldn’t tell. Sporty girl. The servant boy is 100% in love with Hopper, like father-like son, and has the iron bands around his heart. Maybe he could be Hopper’s real true love :x)
Pinocchio (Daughters of The Coachman and Mangiafuoco, and niece of Lampwick. The Coachman’s daughter has a pet donkey that everyone thinks is a turned boy, but nope it’s just a regular donkey. She’s a rebel because she doesn’t want to go down the route of her father. Mangiafuoco’s daughter is scary and off-putting, but actually a genuinely nice girl. Would love to perform onstage but she has stage fright and is just so shy in general, so she resorts to puppet theatre instead. Always uses a hand puppet to talk through. Lampwick’s niece is a rebel because she’d rather not turn into a donkey thank you very much. Low-key resented Cedar up until Legacy Day because she believed if Cedar didn’t exist she wouldn’t need to turn into a donkey. Now they’re on better terms since Cedar decided she’d become human in her own way)
The Wolf and the Seven Young Goats (Youngest son of the youngest goat. Really I just like people with goat features. He’d feel tense around Ramona, even though he’s pretty sure she’s probably not the wolf from his story)
Puss In Boats (Daughter of Puss In Boots. Would probably be able to transform between an animal and human form like Bunny Blanc. Doesn’t really align herself with Royal or Rebel, but has slipped into thoughts like ‘if I can make someone else royalty, why can’t I make myself royalty?’)
The Prince and The Pauper (It’s not a fairytale but the books included King Lear’s daughter so I feel like I’m free to do this. I just think designing two boys that look identical would be fun)
Mwindo (One of my favourite tales because of how entertainingly OP Mwindo is. I imagine that his son would be equally as OP and like half of the student population is scared of him. But that fear often gets subsided because he’s not that keen on using his powers like his dad was)
Commedia dell’arte (Not a story but kids based on the stock characters could be fun. They probably wouldn’t attend Ever After High since they wouldn’t have actual destinies, they’d attend another high school. I had the idea of Cedar doubling as the Burattino stock character, and it developed into all the stock characters being based on different dolls/toys, ie Pierrot being a rag doll, Pulcinella being a wind-up toy, etc. Really I just want Cedar to have people who could understand her whole ‘Am I even real’ situation better, is that too much to ask?!)
Two miscellaneous additions that don’t actually align to specific stories; a Warrior Girl and a Forest Witch. (The Warrior Girl is the daughter of a warrior tribe leader. My idea for her story is that it’s an ancient epic that is so old it has lost its exact name, having been repeated so many times. Also, her reason for following her destiny is less ‘we have to or we all disappear’ and more ‘I have to so I can prove myself worthy’. Her warrior kingdom’s society is very different from Ever After’s society, which she learnt the hard way. She feels awkward hanging out with the other girls because of cultural differences, and she doesn’t like hanging out with boys because they tend to underestimate her. She was only supposed to attend for Legacy year so that she could sign the Book of Legends because Milton Grimm would not stop bugging her father about it, but she decided to stay after the shit show that happened on Legacy day. I didn’t base the Forest Witch of a specific fairy tale because goddamn it there are too many witches living in the forests in these tales for me to choose just one. In universe she probably has a specific destiny, or a few, I just haven’t chosen it yet. Very closed off from others. Actually lives in the Enchanted Forest with her mother. She also likes archery but how much of her skill is genuine and is magic is up to debate)
The Devil (He appears in a lot of fairytales. The OC is a girl who is clearly the daughter of the devil, but it’s never said so no one actually knows it. Every time someone asks about her destiny she’s like ‘it’s nothing important don’t worry about it :)’)

Thumbling
The people tell me I’m a lucky one, ’Cause even though I am a wish-born child (Those never come out normal, like you want), At least I’m human-shaped from head to heel. Not like that monster, Hans, the next town, over, Who’s just a prickly hedgehog, snout to waist, So he must spend his life behind the stove, On a moldy bed of straw, with bugs to eat. A burden to his father – such a shame! And then, they start to argue: When’s the last That anyone had caught a glimpse of him? Some hope he’s finally dead, and so at peace. The people tell me I’m a lucky one, ’Cause even though I’ll never grow a whit, At least I’m handsome, and I’m clever, too. And I can help to drive my father’s cart, Whispering commands in Dobbin’s ear. They say I’m blessed. I grit my teeth and nod, Not like that poor boy Hans, the next town over. My parents love me like a wish come true, And listen to me when I have ideas. My father built a bed that’s just for me. My mother stitched a coat that’s just my size. My supper dish may be an acorn cap, But I have had my fill of bread and cheese. They tell me to be glad I’m not like Hans. And I am glad. I wish they’d notice why.
I wrote this poem back in 2016, as a response to a comment from a former primary care physician who said I was lucky to have the kind of cerebral palsy that "didn't come with [an intellectual disability]."*
When I said that, in my experience, intellectual disability was no more common in people with C.P. than in the general population, he cited his experience with other patients who had C.P. -- children who lived in the local Residential Institution for the Disabled. I countered, again, that if my luck were indeed rare, it was in having a mother who fought to keep me out of institutions.
He said the fact that I had C.P. was making me biased.
{sigh}
*I don't actually remember if he used that phrase, or the other phrase, that's considered a slur by members that community.

Thought that Sonic the Hedgehog was going to kill me and usurp my place in my family
