Lore Dump!!!

Just an exploration of some of Duchess’ family! There’s a bunch of info on the pics about each character, but the basics are; Celeste is Duchess’ aunt and serves as the guardian of the girls, Princess is Duchess’ little sister, and Raven was adopted into the family when she was around two years old.

I might sketch up some castle designs soon, the idea is just a tad bit daunting as I haven’t done castle design before but you’ve gotta start somewhere right?! I tried using glaze or whatever it’s called so please excuse the weird texture/color change💓

Okokok, so I’ve been kind of on an Ever After High kick recently because the premise is just too good oughhhh and I love thinking about it. So here are a few insane headcanons I wrote down instead of studying for my calc exam. Keep in mind though, I’ve only ever watched the show and read the first book (a few years ago now), so if anything I say directly contradicts canon or is already confirmed, please let me know!!! I really want to interact more with the fanbase!

I headcanon The Storybook of Legends to have passive mental persuasion abilities regarding destinies. The magic coerces students into signing by fueling a bone-deep, instinctual pull to act out their story and attempts to crush any personal reservations or hesitations students may have about their own legacy. Of course the book isn’t the only reason weary students with crummy destinies might choose to sign- there’s peer pressure and the instilled belief that by not signing, everything and everyone will disappear. (This alone manages to convince most soon-to-be-villains with bleeding hearts to go through with it.) But the persuasive magic makes the decision much easier. I imagine the book’s magic only works within a certain range and strengthens with prolonged exposure. It also amplifies near Legacy Day, making it extremely difficult for students to resist the urge to sign. Information about this specific property of the book would be well known and documented by Grimm and potentially other school admin, but is largely hidden from the students of Ever After and the broader fairytale world. 

As Legacy Day approaches, many students who subconsciously fight the book’s influence experience migraines, delirium, and paranoia. Personality traits and values that align with the destinies of students are heightened. Characters fated for romantic or strong platonic relationships may also feel inexplicably drawn to one another, even if they weren’t before.

The mass hysteria around Legacy Day is felt by all, yet acknowledged by none and once the book is signed, the persuasion magic, though still there, becomes far less potent (kind of like when a highschooler accepts a university offer and though they still need to maintain a grade average, they often no longer feel the need to put in as much work as before). I also headcanon this to be part of the reason the Royal/Rebel conflict happened when it did and not before, seeing as the book was replaced with a fake and wouldn’t be able to affect the students in the same way (though the real one was hidden within the school, maybe the Evil Queen hexed it (???)). 

I believe that absolutely everyone in the fairytale world has a destiny. The Storybook of Legends has infinite magical pages, and even minor characters or random town residents have legacies. Though, for many, their destinies resemble something like: continue the family business, go outside one day and witness the protagonist of your story do something cool, fall in love, procreate. We know each retelling of a story has slight tweaks, so I’d think background characters’ destinies allow some wiggle room in what they decide to do with their lives. Still, I like to imagine everyone eventually signs the book. Kind of like those old POV tiktoks that go a little something like ‘when you turn sixteen everyone finds out their future??? 😱’ in the sense that before the school year starts at Ever After (where the Storybook of Legends is kept) there’s like a tour that happens where the book gets paraded around  to major fairytale towns and landmarks and every single kid going into (I think it was) the 10th grade/2nd year of highschool/sophmore year are made to sign the book. 

Additionally, it’s a general rule that the number of children in a background character's family corresponds to the number of parents, so each kid can take on a parent’s legacy. If a family has more kids than parents, it likely means:

A. Someone committed adultery,

B. One child is destined to die an unpreventable death, or

C. (Very rare) the child is meant for another fairytale entirely — like a love interest or a stock hero who dies young and doesn’t reproduce.

And unless they’re from a Stock Family, this balance usually holds.

Segue into my next headcanon -which I think might actually be at least partially canon - stock families! So what are they: I headcanon stock families to be families that produce significant amounts of offspring specifically to act as certain archetypes in stories, more often then not, love interests (to prevent incest y’know). This is part of the reason as to why there are so many different Charming families that aren’t related to one another. Children from these families often don’t know their destinies. (Though Charming parents have successfully bribed Grimm in the past to let their kids peek at their destinies early.) and while many become nobility, sometimes they don't. 

Many of these kids attend Ever After and only see their destinies for the first time while practicing for, or during, the televised Legacy Day at the same time as the entire rest of the fairytale world watching. Legacy Day is especially stressful for Charming children because there’s always a risk that they aren’t part of a story befitting of the school’s prestige and it has happened before that Charming children have signed the book on a mundane destiny during the televised event. I like to think this is why there’s a (seemingly not royal) news reporter with the Charming name in the webisodes. 

I also imagine these families are doomed to fizzle out into obscurity, with mundane destinies, after a few generations (again, to prevent incest), with new ones popping up every few years. Despite this, stock families often have more children than average to meet the demand for fairy tales (e.g. Darling, Daring, and Dexter are three siblings from two parents).

I also like to think that, Ever After, despite housing the Storybook of Legends, is not the only school to use it. It’s canon that other schools exist, in this universe like:

Beanstalk High (giants only),

and a school for villains (where Ramona transferred from).

 This leads me to believe that Ever After is special in the sense that unlike other fairytale schools, they don’t specialise in one archetype, however Ever After is still quite hard to get into seeing as they only accept children who play main or supporting roles in popular fables. I like to headcanon that a school called something like ‘Tall Tale High’ exists and they house primarily children of fictional folk story heroes (think: Pecos Bill, Joe Magarac, Old Stormalong, Momotaro, John Henry, Paul Bunyan) and because folk tales have characters perform absurd physical feats, they often give Ever After a run for their money when it comes to sporting events. Ever After probably lets other schools borrow the Storybook of Legends for brief periods so they can do their own Legacy Days, though those ceremonies would never be as commercially successful. There’d probably also be normal schools too, for background children, so that they can learn to ‘contribute to society’ (Though Ever After actually does actually offer a wide variety of STEM courses, and many Ever After alumni do have lives after their ever after (think Snow White) many with stories aren’t expected to enter the workforce.)

Roommate: It’s been tradition for the destined Prince John and Sheriff of Nottingham to room together. It only makes sense! Justice wards off yucky merry men from trying to steal from me on campus.

Secret Hearts Desire: My parents disagree with how close I am to my evil minions, but I wish more than gold for their names to be inseparable from mine in the storybooks.

Magic Touch: My girls and I keep a catalog of everyone’s secrets in a notebook we call the Tax Records. It comes in handy when we gossip, spread rumors, blackmail… You know, the usual teen girl stuff.

Romance Status: Going on a date would be pretty awkward with how seriously Justice Nottingham takes being my royal guard. But if someone were to sneak into my castle past all the knights, we could get some alone time.

Oh, Curses! Moment: Every time I go crown shopping it’s a total fairy-fail! No crown ever fits right on my head. My dad says it’s a family curse, but my cousin Rich can wear crowns just fine!

Favorite Subject: Advance Villainy. My BFFAs and I have the best seats, in the back! We can see everyone and make fun of them. Mr. Badwolf ran out of detention scrolls a long time ago.

Least Favorite Subject: Throne Economics. Raising taxes as a response to everything “doesn’t work,” but it always works out for my parents! Ugh.

Best Friends Forever After: Gaia Gisborne and Justice Nottingham hate the Merry Men. I hate the Merry Men. It’s a match made in Nottingham!

Raven Queen: Ex-childhood best friends. They were best friends from nursery-rhyme school but drifted apart in spellementary. Now in EAH, Pierce and her BFFAs revere her for being the “Princess of Evil" and have made many attempts at befriending her to reveal her more villainous side. The Evil Queen approves of their friendship. Pierce fully believes the "rebel movement" is part of a bigger eviler scheme Raven is planning.

Faybelle Thorn: Childhood friends. They became friends through their parents who were best friends at Ever After High and stayed in touch after graduation. The two used to be inseparable before Pierce was gifted her first evil minion. The two are still friends, but not as close as they used to be. Although, Faybelle hasn't realized this.

Sparrow Hood: While being destined enemies, Pierce doesn't actually hate Sparrow. She finds hating him and his band of Merry Men as just another part of her destiny. In all honesty, she doesn't care about him at all. But, she still finds the time to mess with them, her heart's just not truly in it.

Secret Heart's Desire: I....know I'm supposed to be the good witch, but my true heart's desire lies in staying with Westina Wicked forever after.

My "Magic" Touch: My spell-riffic bubble magic allows for easy transport of my things- and my friends- if they need a lift!

Storybook Romance Status: I'm not sure if I'm in love with Westina Wicked or if we're just friends- that quizzical debate has made persuing a romance off the tea table for a bit.

"Oh, curses!" moment: My status as a "good witch" means I tend to get the most royally unfairest infractions from my teachers whenever I stray from that path! It honestly infurates me!

Favorite Subject: Good Magic Mastery! Where-ever after my destiny leads me, I want to make sure I'm fairy good at magic, if nothing else.

Least favorite subject: Kingdom Management. I try to keep a good face about it, but ruling a kingdom that is destined to spell-a-brate my best friend's death isn't exactly my happily ever after.

My "Magic" Touch: I have some of the best magic hexpertise that Madame Baba Yaga has ever seen in her tale, and when I'm emotionally charged with anger, it works twice as well!

Storybook Romance Status: Bubblelina evokes certain fairy feelings in me, but I have no time for that if I want to be the wickedest of them all.

"Oh, curses!" moment: Being the Wicked Witch means I don't have much friends. Also, when I get mad, it's hard to limit my power- one time, I turned everyone into frogs HEXCEPT the poor prince I was supposed to cast- all because someone called me a toad.

Favorite Subject: Spells, Hexes and General Witchery. Cliche, I know, but when I'm hocus focused, I end up being the most spelltacular student in class!

Least favorite subject: Hexonomics. I'm bad at math. Plain and simple.

Skyler Gale- Daughter of Dorothy

Royal or Rebel?: Royal

Secret Heart's Desire: I just want to be home. I was teleported here from the "real world" thanks to my mothers magic heirloom shoes, and now I have to learn all this new lingo and about my new "destiny". Truthfully, I'm still a bit thronesick, but I'm still quite enjoying this unex- unHEXepcted home.

My "Magic" Touch: My silver slippers! It's what got me here in the first place, but for some reason, I can't tap my shoes and go home 'until my heart feels like home', whatever that means.

Storybook Romance Status: Truth be told, I do like Tina Tinman and Leon Braveheart, they have helped me feel like home during my first few days here as an hexchange student.

"Oh, curses!" moment: Being from Kansas, sometimes it's hard to understand cultural norms of this place. Like how "ex" is replaced by "hex" in most cases, or how we learn stuff related to our fairy tales- I got quite a few weird looks for saying I'd like to try General Villiany.

Favorite Subject: Grimmnastics. This is the class most like home- and with my shoes, I'm an ace at the hexercises!

Least favorite subject: Hero Training- the most I do is throw a bucket of water on whoever the wicked witch in my tale is, so it's a chore to sit through.

A First Sneak Peek at my EAH AU

She rather liked being a tree, all things considered. Her bark protected her from the elements and her roots reached into the dirt to connect with the whole forest. The woods provided sun and rain, everything she could want.

Which is why it was terribly distressing when a buzz went through the roots that there was a man with an ax. And even more so when she suddenly found herself unable to hear the rest of the forest.

The next thing she knew, she was opening her eyes (and when had she grown those?) on two humans standing in front of her.

"Who are you?" She spoke the words in a slightly raspy voice. (Words and a voice, two more things she was pretty sure she hadn't had before.)

"My name is Azure. And this is Giuseppe," the first human said. Or maybe it wasn't a human at all; she didn't think they usually had wings. "Oh! And you're… um…" she fluttered her wings and looked to the human standing next to her.

Giuseppe gave her a goofy grin. "I'm gonna call her Boobie Mc-" only to stop when he was whacked on the head by a wand.

"You can't do that. She's, like, your daughter!" Azure scolded.

"I'm pretty sure she's older than me," he complained. "How old are you?"

"19." The tree girl said. Though she wasn't sure when she had started thinking of herself as a tree girl, instead of just a tree. Or when she had started thinking at all. She wasn't sure where that number came from either, but she just felt it in her roots that it was right. (Or would have, if she still had roots. This was quickly getting frustrating.)

Giuseppe gave Azure a look as if to say 'I told you so.' and she just frowned back. "Well, we have to call her something! How about Cedar? She was carved from a cedar tree, after all."

"Yeah, that works. Welcome to being a person, Cedar! Congratulations on being the next Pinocchio."

And suddenly Cedar was even more confused. She missed her forest. This whole 'being a person' business sounded rather complex.

"No thank you. Put me back in the forest, please."
