1. New study says conservation works, providing hope for biodiversity efforts
Tumblr media
“A new study published in Science reveals that conservation works, with conservation actions improving or slowing the decline of biodiversity in two-thirds of the cases analyzed.”
2. Monk Seal Pup Debuts in Waikīkī on Lei Day
Tumblr media
“Endangered Hawaiian monk seal RK96 (Kaiwi) gave birth to her sixth pup on popular Kaimana Beach in Waikīkī, Oʻahu! […] Hawaiian monk seals are one of the most endangered seal species in the world, so each pup represents hope for the species’ recovery.”
3. West Coast Indigenous-led marine conservation area gets global spotlight
Tumblr media
“A coastal First Nation is celebrating global recognition of its marine protected area after recently snagging a “blue park” designation that highlights exemplary ocean conservation efforts around the world. […] Kitasu Bay supports one of the last abundant herring spawns along the central coast, vital to the nation’s communal herring roe on kelp (ROK) fishery - which harvests the protein-rich eggs but leaves the fish alive to flourish and spawn again.”
4. The number of fish on US overfishing list reaches an all-time low. Mackerel and snapper recover
Tumblr media
“The report states that 94% of fish stocks are not subject to overfishing, which is slightly better than a year ago. The U.S. was able to remove several important fish stocks from the overfishing list, NOAA said in a statement. […] The removal of species from the overfishing list shows the U.S. is making progress, said Rick Spinrad, NOAA’s administrator.”
5. Researchers Collaborate with the Shipping Industry to Cut Costs, Fuel Consumption and Greenhouse Gas Emissions in Shipping
“Through coordinated ship scheduling and an optimisation of ship operations and port services, the objective is to achieve a substantial increase in energy efficiency and a 10-20% reduction in fuel consumption, consequently resulting in lowered greenhouse gas emissions [and] leading to substantial economic benefits for shipping and environmental advantages for society[….]”
6. The city flower farm that is changing lives

“Heart of BS13 Flowers in Hartcliffe is part of the wider Heart of BS13 charity which tackles food insecurity in south Bristol. Profits from the flower sales to run workshops, offer volunteer and trainee placements, and create education opportunities for people from Hartcliffe.”
7. Four falcon chicks hatch in Glasgow university tower
Tumblr media
“Members of the [Glasgow Peregrine] project hope to […] fit [the chicks] with electronic tags that will enable monitoring of their movements. Mr Simpson added: "With the identification tags we can see where they have gone, how high they fly and other information that would be really useful." In recent years the group have held peregrine watches at the university, allowing people to see the birds in their nest.”
8. 'Banana pingers' are saving whales and dolphins around the world
Tumblr media
“[T]he Kibel brothers, Pete (a fisheries biologist) and Ben (an engineer) […] have been utilising light to protect turtles, sound to protect porpoises and electro pulses to protect sharks. [… Trials] showed reduced average catch rates of blue shark by 91%, and catch rates of pelagic stingray by 71% […as well as] a fall in the number of sea turtles being trapped by 42%.”
9. New vaccine effective against coronaviruses that haven't even emerged yet
“Researchers have developed a new vaccine technology that has been shown in mice to provide protection against a broad range of coronaviruses with potential for future disease outbreaks -- including ones we don't even know about. […] The new vaccine works by training the body's immune system to recognise specific regions of eight different coronaviruses, including SARS-CoV-1, SARS-CoV-2, and several that are currently circulating in bats and have potential to jump to humans and cause a pandemic.”
10. Grassland birds, Forest birds and Other Migratory Birds to Benefit from More Than $22 Million in Funding Throughout the Americas
Tumblr media
“This year, more than $4.87 million in federal funds will be matched by more than $17 million in partner contributions going to 30 collaborative conservation projects in 19 countries across the Americas. “These investments will [… protect] millions of acres of diverse habitats needed by grassland birds, forest birds and shorebirds for wintering, breeding and migration,” said Service Director Martha Williams.”

By macabre coincidence an event that took place around Bristol marks a major turning point in the story of pop music. Eddie Cochran died hours after appearing at the Bristol Hippodrome in 1960, as part of the Larry Parnes-produced Anglo-American rock ’n’ roll package tour. Two of the people who shared a stage with Cochran that night were Tony Sheridan and a Liverpudlian singer called Johnny Gentle. Both were under contract to Parnes and both would play a significant role in the history of the most influential British act of all time, the Beatles. Sheridan, the first British rock ’n’ roller to sing and play his own guitar live on British TV, would become best known for the recordings he made in Hamburg with the Beatles shortly before they found fame.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Parnes was the first manager in Britain to become as famous as his artists – the Simon Cowell of his day – with a stable of singers including Tommy Steele, Britain’s first real rock ’n’ roll star, Marty Wilde, Billy Fury, Vince Eager and others. He was also homosexual, a dangerous thing to be at a time when gay men were routinely arrested, fined or even imprisoned.
Their tour was due to take a break after a week of shows in Bristol, and Cochran and co-headliner Gene Vincent wanted to get home to America. Cochran was in a hurry to get to London, where he was going to meet up with Vince Eager before the pair flew to the States together, and Cochran and Vincent rented a private hire taxi, driven by George Martin from Hartcliffe, to take them. Shortly after 11pm on 16 April 1960, their car set off from Bristol’s Royal Hotel (now the Bristol Marriott Royal, on College Green) for London Airport.
Tumblr media
Sadly, none of the passengers would make their flight. Less than an hour out of Bristol, Martin realised he had taken a wrong turn. On Rowden Hill, a notorious accident black spot near Chippenham, he lost control and the car spun backwards, hitting a lamppost. The impact of the crash sent Cochran up into the roof of the car and forced the rear passenger side door open, throwing him onto the road. Martin and tour manager Patrick Thompkins, who were in the front of the vehicle, were able to walk away uninjured. The three passengers who had occupied the back seat – Eddie, Gene and Eddie’s girlfriend Sharon Sheeley – were lying on the grass verge. All three were rushed to Chippenham Cottage Hospital, before being transferred to St Martin’s Hospital, just outside Bath. Vincent had broken his collarbone, Sheeley was badly bruised and concussed, but Cochran was seriously injured and would not regain consciousness: he died in hospital in Bath the following day. A young police cadet, David Harman, was among those called to help clear the scene after the crash. Harman would later find fame as Dave Dee, front man of the hit group Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Tich.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Three weeks after Cochran’s death, Larry Parnes auditioned the Beatles to act as the backing group to his big signing, Billy Fury. They did not win that booking, but he hired them to play with Johnny Gentle on a short tour of Scotland. All of the Beatles were fans of Cochran and Vincent, and lapped up Gentle’s tales of life on the road with the two big American stars. When the 17-year-old George Harrison discovered that Gentle owned the shirt that Cochran had worn on stage in Bristol for that last show he begged the singer to give it to him.

WD & HO Wills Tobacco Factory in the Centre of Bristol UK
W.D. & H.O. Wills was a British tobacco manufacturing company formed in Bristol, England. It was the first British company to mass-produce cigarettes, and one of the founding companies of Imperial Tobacco along with John Player & Sons.
The company was founded in 1786, and went by various names before 1830 when it became "W.D. & H.O. Wills". Tobacco was processed and sold under several brand names, some of which were still used by Imperial Tobacco until the second half of the 20th century. The company pioneered the use of cigarette cardswithin their packaging. Many of the buildings in Bristol and other cities around the United Kingdom still exist with several being converted to residential use.
The brand "Wills" was withdrawn by Imperial Tobacco in 1988 for the majority of its products
Many of the original buildings have been demolished but others remain and have been repurposed for communal use and office space...
The TOP image shows the 'New" factory and Headquarters of Imperial Tobacco built in 1974 in the district of Hartcliffe Bristol. Tobacco products ceased to be produced in the late 80's early 90's and this building was partly demolished in 1992 and the site redeveloped into Retail, Leisure, Communal, Office, and Podium Space and renamed Imperial Park.....

In 1992, Shaun Starr (32) and Keith Buck (18) were killed by police as they rode on a stolen police motorcycle. The Regional Crime Squad, embarrassed by the theft, chased the bike down themselves rather than relay the information to the appropriate police units in Hartcliffe. Witnesses report seeing an unmarked police car swerve into the two on the bike, killing them instantly. Witnesses then reported seeing the police moving the bodies of the deceased to make the incident appear more 'accidental'. The people of Hartcliffe and South Bristol then rioted for three days. Their first port of call was the local police drop-in centre, "The Cop Shop", which they burnt to the ground. Many were arrested. DC Wallington, accused of the men's murders, was found guilty of death by dangerous driving, although his conviction was shortly overturned on appeal. The attention brought to Hartcliffe's isolation and alienation by the riots is believed to helped spur investment into the area but also to have fostered a stronger sense of community amongst residents. Lee and Ruth both grew up in the area and came back to talk about the events nearly 3 decades later. Lee happily speaks about joining in with the riots and shows us the leaflet he helped pass across Hartcliffe with the local Class War anarchists, hastily made in the immediacy of the riots. This was an unfinished documentary that sought to explore many riots in Bristol's history - from the 1831 Uprising, to the women cotton mill workers of Barton Hill, the unemployed and anti-fascist demonstrations of the 1930s and the St Pauls riots of 1980 - that I may revisit at a later date. But in the meantime, 2021 has made riots in Bristol feel significant for whatever reason and I thought I'd share this piece.

Bristol Local Plan
The Bristol Tree Forum are primarily interested in Trees in Bristol, particularly in Street Trees.  The recent attention on the mayors commitment to double tree canopy by 2046 has focused attention on the measurement of tree canopy over the city, and on where trees can be planted to achieve that goal.
On our website which documents trees in Bristol, we also record the sites on which trees are located and we are using this website to document green spaces in Bristol.  This task has been given some urgency by the current review of the Local Plan, in particular in the designation of specific areas as Local Green Spaces and Reserved Open Space, with different levels of planning process protection.  We are interested in understanding the implications for this policy, in comparing the specific sites selected under these designations and in identifying green spaces which are excluded from these designations.
Sadly the only information on the Open Space designations is a PDF document with printed maps per ward. No GIS data is available, apparently due to copyright restrictions.
We are currently working on matching the areas in the Open Space document to sites in other BCC resources, particularly the BCC sites such as parks and green spaces, and allotments which are already in BristolTrees.space, supplemented by data from the BCC Asset register. Correspondance is difficult because names are often different, as are boundaries of areas.
Another difficulty is that areas subject to neighbourhood plans are omitted:
“open spaces already designated through Neighbourhood Plan Areas within Hengrove, Hartcliffe, Lawrence Weston and Old Market were not appraised further”
so some BCC sites will consequentially be omitted.  Are the boundaries of these neighbourhood areas available digitally?
Preliminary observations
Problems with the LP classification of areas are illustrated by the treatment of golf courses.  On the face of it, a golf course offers the same amenity and biodiversity value.  Three Golf Clubs are included: Shirehampton Park Golf Club Ground (LGS), Coombe Hill Golf Course(sic) [better known as Henbury Golf Club] (LGS), Filton Golf Course (ROS);  and one is absent:  Knowle Golf Club in Stockwood. [on further investigation, this is because its in the Green Belt which is excluded form the Local Plan] .
This lack of consistency is also shown in other types of spaces.  Children’s Play Areas are sometimes included, mostly not.  Is this a deliberate choice and if so what are the implications for the excluded play areas; if accidental, it casts further doubt on the quality of the exercise. Some could be included in larger areas, as has happened with some allotments - with the available mapping it is sometimes hard to tell.
Parks present a different problem. Aside from those which are undesignated, the majority are designated as Local Green Spaces but some 15 parks are only Restricted Open Spaces.  The number of trees on the park or the CAVAT value of the trees might be one rather objective indication of quality. It is vary hard to see why Royal Fort Gardens, an arboretum in the heart of Bristol University and open to the public should be ROS.
It would seem that this exercise has been carried out by an external agent whose local knowledge is somewhat lacking and who only had access to the BCC Asset register and not the BCC data on parks, open spaces and allotments.
This exercise includes land in private ownership as well as council ownership and thus includes privately owned parks such as Morley Square as well as independent schools. Here too there is a problem of completeness:
