A couple months ago, someone left their CD collection in the laundry room of my apartment building with a note basically saying “take them or I’ll throw them out.” Every now and then you win the lottery.
The most impressive pickup was a Led Zeppelin box set which included all of their studio recordings. I had never owned a Led Zeppelin album before nor had I ever listened to one front-to-back.
It shouldn’t be surprising that LZ albums don’t show up all that often in bargain bins.
So two weeks ago, during the first delve into the “L” albums, I got to listen to the first four Led Zeppelin albums in a row. Here’s what I discovered.
There is a clear and definite reason why they’re seen as one of the best bands of all time.
All of the albums ran under 45 minutes and contain 10 tracks or less. I listened to Zeppelin for a little under 3 hours straight. I never got bored and the music never felt monotonous. This is a pretty extraordinary accomplishment and one that argues for structure and brevity over limitlessness. We’ll have to see how I feel about “Physical Graffiti.”
I don’t normally like blues but I do like math rock. Page brings the math to blues.
There is a sweetness to Plant’s screeching that appears after listening to it for a while. Kind of like one of those pictures that you have to stare at for some time to see the hidden image.
The next time I’m going to have a one-band experience like this will be with Weezer and I highly doubt it will be as successful.
What I listened to last week:
Top 100 contenders in bold.
dredg - Leitmotif
The Lemonheads - The Lemonheads: Evan Dando plus the rhythm section from The Descendents? Yes please!
Propagandhi - More Talk, Less Rock
PJ Harvey - Let England Shake
The Replacements - Let It Be: This is one of those “classic” albums that I just don’t get. I mean, it’s fine and all, and has some amazing tracks, but on the whole, I don’t find it masterful.
Senses Fail - Let It Enfold You
Sorry About Dresden - Let It Rest
Limbeck - Let Me Come Home
The Mighty Mighty Bosstones - Let’s Face It
Marvin Gaye - Let’s Get It On: Again, another “classic” that I fail to understand.
Mystikal - Let’s Get Ready
Rancid - Let’s Go
Brandtson - Letterbox
Defeater - Letters Home
Bright Eyes - Letting Off The Happiness
The Hives - Lex Hives
Beastie Boys - Licensed To Ill
The Used - Lies For The Liars
The Notorious B.I.G. - Life After Death: Perhaps if I liked “Ready to Die” less, I would like this sloppy, mediocre, way too commercial sounding double album more. However, even with all its setbacks, Biggie’s lyrical prowess continues to outshine any of its flaws.
John Vanderslice - Life and Death of an American Fourtracker
Crosstide - Life as a Spectator
Jermaine Dupri - Life in 1472
Mika - Life in Cartoon Motion
Hidden in Plain View - Life in Dreaming
MxPx - Life in General (PPP #39)
Albums listened to in total: 911
