from kathleen hanna's 1993 zine my life with evan dando, pop star. (via)
I fell in love with Evan because it seemed like the worst thing i could do at the time. I fell in love with Evan because it was totally uncool and pathetic which is how i felt inside. I fell in love with Evan because the band i am in started getting all this weird attention and i felt like he was the only one who would understand. I fell in love with Evan because sometimes i wish i was a boy and that the worst thing that ever happened to me was having too many girls like me. I fell in love with Evan because i wanted him to die and thought if i could get him to love me i would show him what a broken heart really was. I fell in love with Evan because he is a total slut and everyone thinks its very cute, unlike when i was in jr hi and high school and the word "slut" followed me everywhere at arms length. I fell in love with Evan because i don't do drugs and so i need other destructive pasttimes. I fell in love with Evan because i can't deal with real boys barely at all and yet am wildly attracted attracted their flat chests and strait hips (sometimes) Evan is my perfect boyfriend because i am allowed to invent him all by myself.

Favorite cover song?
ohhhhh great question!!!! i love covers <33
The first song that came to my head was Mrs Robinson by The Lemonheads, cause it's such a good example of a song from a completely different genre that was adapted into another one, that kept the spirit of the song but made it into a new thing also. Plus it's super fun!!!
Idk if Christmas standards count as covers but The Beths' version of Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas is insane. give it a listen when the season rolls around
And lastly Les Feuilles Mortes by Dalida. For english speakers you would know the original as Autumn Leaves, popularized by Nat King Cole, which is in itself a cover of Prévert's original song. It's like a slow, jazzy ballad, and she made it into a disco banger!!! The instrumentation is SO FUN and the production is insane. This song feels like being in the middle of a windy spiral as leaves fly all around you it's crazy!!!

It's time for Beginnings, the podcast where writer and performer Andy Beckerman talks to the comedians, writers, filmmakers and musicians he admires about their earliest creative experiences and the numerous ways in which a creative life can unfold.

On today's episode, I talk to musician Evan Dando. Attending the CommonWealth School in Boston in the early 1980s, Evan met Ben Deily and Jesse Peretz, and in 1986, they formed The Lemonheads. The band released three great albums on Taang!, but it wasn't until after signing to Atlantic and releasing It's a Shame About Ray in 1992 that the band broke through. While there have been numerous ups and downs, personnel changes, a six-year hiatus, during which Evan released a wonderful album under his own name, The Lemonheads have endured through the decades. They've recorded a number of new singles, and starting in early February, Evan will be touring across the US!

I love covers. I love this one by the Lemonheads. Mrs. Robinson is an iconic song. Evan Dando elevates it.
