Sam and Colin having a rough time at the library decide to keep each other company. Read on ao3!

Sam squinted at his computer screen, his eyes scanning the PDF on his laptop over and over. He was reading the words, but he wasn’t comprehending them.

He needed more coffee.

Or less coffee, by Alice’s suggestion. Which was fair. Since starting college, he seemed to be a cup away from a caffeine overdose at all times.

But it kept him moving, so the risk of imminent death was worth it.

At least, until the quiet of the library was interrupted by certain… suspicious sounds from one of the nearby study rooms.

“Jesus fucking Christ.” Sam turned his head, seeing Colin, on the opposite end of the table, smacking his head against the wooden table.

How long had he been there?

At the sound of another grunt, Sam picked up his laptop. “Nope, nope, nope, nope,” he whispered as he migrated to the other side of the table, farther away from the nearby study room.

Colin looked at him, half amused, half wincing. 

“I already can’t focus, this is not helping.” Sam sighed, rubbing his eyes.

“Ain’t that the truth,” Colin grumbled. There was something about Colin’s voice that Sam liked. It was oddly comforting, and he wasn’t sure why.

Actually, he did know why. It was the briskness of his voice. It reminded Sam of autumn wind. It had a bit of a bite to it, but it was one of his favorite times of the year.

And Sam found himself enjoying Colin’s presence quite a lot.

“What’re you working on?” Sam glanced over Colin’s shoulder at his laptop screen. He didn’t understand a lick of coding, but thought it’d be nice to ask at least.

“Trying to implement AVL trees in Haskell for an assignment. Being a pain in the arse.” Colin’s nose wrinkled, his eyes narrowing at the laptop screen. His face seemed to scrunch slightly when he was thinking, Sam noticed, and it softened his harsh features. 

It was kind of cute.

“Dýou want to talk about it?” Sam asked him.

Colin looked at him. “That would require me to actually know what the hell I’m doing.”

“... That's fair.”

A quiet melody of music wafted through the air, and Sam’s head perked up slightly, confused. 

Colin paused. “At least we know they’re lesbians now.”

He was silent for a moment. “I’m sorry, is that The Giver?”

“Yep.”

“Just kill me now.” Sam buried his face in his hands, sinking down in his chair.

“No way I’m suffering through this alone.” Colin gave him a small pat on the head.

“I thought those rooms were supposed to be soundproof.” Sam sighed, reluctantly sitting back up and looking back at his laptop.

“This buildin’s like a hundred years old, Sam.” Colin gave him a look. “Maybe it was at some point.”

“That’s… fair.”

The groans from the study room seemed to get louder, and Sam covered his ears with his palms, nearly smacking his head into the table.

What have I done to earn this in my life?

Trying to focus back on the PDF on his laptop, he felt a small nudge to his shoulder. Glancing over at Colin, he saw the Scot offering him a wired earbud, the other one already in his ear.

Sam scooted his chair over, bringing his laptop with him so he was closer to Colin, so the cord wasn’t reaching super far.

He took the earbud, putting it in his ear before turning his attention back to his laptop. It didn’t fully drown out their surroundings, but it was better than having both hands over his ears the entire time. 

Sam didn’t recognize the song, but it reminded him of the alternative rock that Alice had listened to (and quickly outgrew) when they were in middle school. It wasn’t his personal taste, but it wasn’t bad.

He managed to get through the last bit of the PDF he needed to skim through for the assignment, leaning his head only slightly so he could cover his other ear.

Every now and then, their shoulders brushed slightly due to how close they were sitting, and it made Sam feel… something.

It wasn’t much of a surprise to him that he liked Colin; Sam figured out early on that he grew attached to people very quickly, and Colin was definitely his type. The hard part was trying to sort out other people’s feelings.

“Fuckin’ bastard.” Sam stifled a slight laugh at Colin swearing under his breath, glaring daggers at his laptop.

“Everything alright?” he smiled, a bit amused.

“The program’s bein’ stupid as shit.” Colin fumed slightly, furiously punching something into the keyboard. His accent seemed to have thickened slightly, out of irritation.

Kinda cute.

Sam glanced at Colin’s screen and winced slightly “Just looking at that hurts my head.”

“Imagine trying to write it,” he grumbled, rubbing his face with a hand. “They need so many fucking rotations.”

“Yeah, I don’t think I want to imagine it.” 

“Fair.”

The squeaky sound of a door caught Sam’s attention, and his head perked up slightly before his eyes widened.

Stepping out of the study room, was Alice and Gwen.

He did a double take, glancing over at Colin, who had momentarily dropped his pen, previously having paused to write something down.

What the hell?

“Oh my God.” Sam rubbed the side of his face with his hand.

“Hey ladies,” Colin got their attention. “Those rooms aren’t soundproof. Could hear the Chappel Roan all the way out here.”

Gwen’s face immediately went a bright shade of red, covering her face with her hands.

“Suck a carrot, Becher!” Alice called back as she walked off, dragging Gwen along with her by the arm.

Sam glanced back at Colin, and the amused smirk on his face made the embarrassment all worth it.

“So… You and Gwen are a thing now?” Sam raised an eyebrow at Alice from across the dorm room.

“Yep,” she said simply, popping the p.

“I’ll be honest, I wasn’t expecting that.” he leaned back in his desk chair.

“Yeah, yeah, we had our academic rivals-to-lovers arc, what about you, Sammy?” she sat up on her bed. “You and Colin were awfully close.”

“We were just sharing music.”

“Just that?”

“He has good music taste!”

“Please, Sam. Colin has the music taste of a divorced middle-aged man.” Alice flopped back down on her bed. “Which is a level just above a middle schooler discovering MCR for the first time.”

“I think you’re just being a bit mean.” Sam laughed slightly.

“Fine then, what did you guys listen to?”

He paused. “...Black Veil Brides.”

She snapped her fingers. “Exactly. I gotta say, Sammy, your taste varies between batshit and a bit basic.”

He snorted lightly. “And where do you fall on that?”

“Oh, absolutely batshit.” she grinned. “I’m on one side of the scale, Colin’s on the other.”

“Colin isn’t basic.”

“Just a little.”

“He drinks Redeyes and majors in Computer Science. I wouldn’t call it basic.”

Alice raised an eyebrow “...Colin doesn’t drink Redeye.”

“No?”

She shook her head. “Not even close. He likes his drinks as dark as his soul, and even though he likes to put up that bitchy scottish exterior of his, he has the heart and soul of a confetti cupcake.”

Sam raised his eyebrows at that, but said nothing.Huh.

So IDK if any of you are interested, but I felt the need to write a sort of DVD commentary for Adding on Weight talking about easter eggs and inspirations.

General

Working title was "Die a Boring Death" but I decided that it didn't make sense past chapter 5.

I spent a lot of time trying to find something about longing, about wanting someone to want something. About wanting to be wanted, or wanting in general. I never found it and I'm not sure I like the title I landed on. 

(The song after the chapter is where the title is from.)

Chapter 1: Dial Drunk, Noah Kahan

I moved the timeline of the book because I wanted everyone to have more time to feel consequences. Kaz gets happy years before he gets imprisoned. Matthias is in Hellgate for longer. Everyone has a long enough time to actually work through the grief because I don't have to write YA where they're 17 years old.

Sir was originally 2 characters; a heavy and a talky guy. By the time I got to chapter 5 and knew what was going to happen when Kaz escaped, I knew I had to cut them to one. So we lost the talky guy and Sir just became more odious.

Kaz eats an apple because this is his Kobyashi Maru

The assignment was originally to wipe out the principal of the debt. Once I did math, that wasn't going to be near enough of an impetus.

The chef Kaz works for is named Kooken, which is just the Dutch word for "cook"

Chapter 2: Afraid of Heights, boygenuis

The party was not the original idea here, at the point of writing this chapter I didn't have the inciting crime totally figured out (originally Jordie just lost money he was carrying, but that wasn't good enough later to imprison and brutalize Kaz) and so I had this idea that he'd been breaking into the office of the brothel and doing like… audits that got him attention. And Pekka was going to send him to a Mercher's home to get their financial information. I scrapped that when I decided Pekka was going to be our major villain.

The entire point of this chapter was to get Kaz in eyeliner

No actually, the idea of Kaz being forced to sit on Pekka's lap and count cards came extremely early in the process, as did the idea of it being where Inej sees the potential. Originally she was going to be a Dreg lieutenant but I didn't want to have to deal with Per Haskell, so I gave her a gang of her own.

The tattoo knife thing would absolutely not work in reality. 

Card counting is not that reliable. 

The tray of glasses was a very late addition to the story, but I fell in love with the idea of Kaz having glass stuck in him that no one will help him with but Nina.

I always think the trope of a person sitting in the shadows waiting for another person is ridiculous because it implies that they broke in and sat in the dark for hours waiting. Doing fuck all. I still made Inej do it.

Chapter 3: Afraid of Heights, boygenuis

The chapter that boygenuis wrote, this whole thing is a mix between revolution 0 and afraid of heights

I just want to know/who broke your nose/figure out where they live/so I can kick their teeth in

There's been a run of fires downtown/On half-built construction sites/I know you never liked a townhouse/I've seen you climb a crane at night/If they ever catch you at it/I know you'd want me to be proud/That you took a rich man's dream/And brought it with you on your way down

Kaz thinks the Jam Tart House is a stupid name because I do. Who names a house that? But it's in the book!

They're drinking fantasy Strongbow at the night market.

Kaz crawling into Inej's bed is, to me, the saddest scene of this entire fic.

Chapter 4: Stick Season, Noah Kahan

A deck of cards and book of tricks gets left in Kaz's room, but he doesn't stop to think about who left them there. This is Inej, wanting him to want things.

"Good days" here is lying in wait for Jesper's question six chapters later. 

The client Kaz kills was an early idea, that he'd be set off by the word "daddy". Mostly because I am. 

The Floating Place is pure dissociation. Brought to you by my mental illnesses.

"So break me. Or buy me." is one of my favorite lines.

Kaz makes more than $1,200 a night. At the end of 8 years, assuming no days off and no fines, he would have made $3,504,000. He has paid off his principal 54 times. 

We learn later that his debt is held at 500% interest, which means at the end of 8 years with 0 payments he would have owed $221,709,240,000.

Kaz is getting fucked by the interest.

"Young, dumb, and down for everything" was originally "young, dumb, and full of come" but I couldn't bring myself to put that in a story.

Inej's story changed a few times, mostly her age at the time of the raid. At first she was 14 when it happened, but I needed more time for her father to drink himself to death and her to hunt down slavers before getting to Ketterdam. So now I imagine she left Ravka on her mission around 14.

Chapter 5: Afraid of Heights, boygenuis

Kaz's birthday is canonically in December or January, so I believe my exact idea for this scene was December 20. That's my mom's birthday.

Kaz's Kaelish is actually the gaelic for "you are an excellent lover"

Jesper's comment about using the curtains to hang youself is due to the way Margret Atwood describes Offred's room in the Handmaid's Tale. 

Getting them in year four would mean Kaz was 17, so after the leg, which he refers to as "breaking him beyond repair" later.

Kaz doesn't put on shoes because I wasn't sure he would own a pair. Why would he?

The Sir fight scene was originally much shorter, but I liked the idea of Kaz getting a little beat up.

I kinda regret killing Sir here. I should have done it after chapter 8, it would have meant more to the audience.

""No," he says. "I'm right here." was originally the last line of the story.

And then she's gone/And then he's alone is a reference to Come From Away and you can pry it from my cold, dead hands.

Kaz hiding under the bed is inspired by the one scene in The Haunting of Hill House that I have never watched, where the Tall Man comes for his hat.

Inej brings coffee because Kaz wished for coffee in chapter 1 as a luxury he didn't get. She doesn't know it, but I do.

Chapter 6: Harmony Hall, Vampire Weekend

Going to the exchange to see his debt posted was a night before publishing add or I would have written the entire scene. I should have.

I had to think of a reason for Inej to be painting. In reality, I think she just finds Ketterdam ugly and needs the beauty in her life.

"Wool socks" is inspired by that viral Danny Pudi clip 

I imagined Inej did a lot of the "hanging head first in a canal while the tide comes in" type murders because then she can tell herself that if the Saints want them to live, they will.

"Don't come into my club and refuse my hospitality" is based on something my grandfather would say if we came to his restaurant and weren't hungry. You could order a plate of nothing, but you had to order something. 

Kaz mentions that he should learn people's names here. By chapter 14, he will know the name of every Razorgull he meets.

Chapter 7: Dial Drunk, Noah Kahan

I forgot about the first tattoo knife for a long time and had to go back and write it in. I believe Nina had it with her on Heist Night.

Kaz's back being scarred from beatings was a decision I made because I needed him to be damaged in ways people didn't know about to echo his insides. 

This is the only time the word "rape" is used in the entire fic.

The private room where they have dinner is based very specifically on one at the Palm that my parents rented out for my dad's birthday once. There are fewer caricatures in Kaz and Inej's.

"Secret for a secret" was the only way I could make Kaz talk in this scene.

Chapter 8: revolution 0, boygenuis

Is the whistle Inej uses (and Wylan does later) the conflict motif from West Side story? I'll never tell.

Inej in the meeting with Pekka is heavily inspired by a specific Space Pirate RP Pixy and I did 12 years ago. "I didn't do it and you can't prove it" was her character's MO there.

$60,000 at 500% for 40 years would end up being $1,764,509,279,127,346,261,335,823,263,022,972,928 with 0 payments. 

We know Kaz makes more than $1200 a night, and works 7 days a week. Assuming he never had a day off and never incurred a fine, he would make $17,520,000 in 40 years. 

He was always fucked. 

I very nearly cut the leg breaking scene because it was just that brutal. I expected more people to be disgusted with Sir afterwards, anyway. This is why I shouldn't have killed him so early. If he was in the room for Kaz's flashback it would have hit harder.

The style of the leg breaking is deeply inspired by my friend Ruby, who writes such beautiful horrors.

Chapter 9: Afraid of Heights, boygenuis

Kaz counting his kisses starting over is something I borrowed from Natasha Romanoff fic. It doesn't count if you had to do it.

I also do not know how to make dry coffee be wet coffee but that's because I hate coffee.

Inej gets to show her smarts here, she knows what Kaz saw even if he still doesn't. He never mentions two sets of books, but she recognizes the behavior and names it.

Originally Nina was going to be able to control dissociation a lot better until I reread her intro in SOC and she specifically says she can't control the brain. That's when I invented plan B for the heist: fantasy roofies.

Jesper and Kaz are flirting while picking locks and I ship it.

"You've been through it" is in fact the most insane way I could think of to respond to "I wish I could have picked locks so fewer people would have assaulted me," which is in itself a BUCK WILD thing to say.

The affidavit was a late addition. I needed Kaz to be more afraid.

"Torpor of constant terror" would be a good band name

Originally the painting had a representation of Kaz and Inej in it, but that felt too obvious to me.

Chapter 11: revolution 0, boygenuis

Inej is wearing a fantasy Sari. Kaz specifically got 9 yds of silk for it.

It is raining because something has to go wrong in a heist and it can't be something that the characters could have planned for. Adding it allowed me to slow down the escape from Pekka's office later (sealing the tray) and also set Kaz on high alert so he'd be more susceptible to the panic later

Chapter 12: Cool About It, boygenuis

Describing a person as "built like a ship- wide and low" gave me great joy.

The cloche tray was one of those happy accidents I wrote in that turned into a gift. Initially it was just a tray. Then it had a fork. Then it was a ledger containment device. But that all happened organically.

Originally Jesper left the code in his pants in the ceiling, but I decided that was a stupid mistake to make and I didn't want him to look incompetent.

The guards absolutely smell the acid and that's what brings them into the room.

Chapter 13: Harmony Hall, Vampire Weekend

There are 0 hits on google for the phrase "upstanding young criminal", which I was sure I stole from somewhere.

The tattoo knife being Kaz's weapon here was planned from chapter 2. I loved the idea of Kaz stabbing Pekka with a knife made of the ink Pekka put on him.

Maybe someday I will write a story about Dime Lion Hostage girl, because I love her an irrational amount.

The hero/corpse line gave me so much joy that I told it to my roommate who also thought I plagiarized it. I did not.

I knew Kaz had to think something happened to Inej, but I was disgusted at the idea of actually hurting her in a sexual way. In the first draft of this scene, I still didn't know why Pekka wanted to get her alone and I wrote a whole monologue about them joining forces and it was extremely bad.

I considered having Kaz tell Pekka that his son had already signed a contract to be a closer analogue to the book, but it just didn't make sense for this Kaz.

Chapter 14: House By The Sea, Moddi

Do not jump out of third story windows. I did a lot of research about this, you will injure yourself.

Here we have the first hint that Kaz has actually integrated into the Gulls, even if he doesn't know it yet. When he bursts into the guard shack Dael (who I also love?) speaks to him, and not Jesper.

The guardroom questions between Jesper and Kaz are my least favorite scene in this story. It feels like plain exposition to me, but it needed to happen and I never figured out how to make it better.

"You should see the other guy" is what Jesper said back in chapter 4 when he got stabbed. It was my brother's go-to response when he was hurt after wrestling matches in high school and college.

"I've been worse" is what Kaz told Nina back in chapter 2 after the beating. It's what I tend to say when someone at work asks me how I am.

Kerstan, the Razorgull who gives Kaz a blanket, is roughly 9 years old. I know his backstory vaguely (he is Dael's little brother), but mostly he's meant to invoke feelings of "what the fuck" in Kaz

I went back and forth about the scene with the caning scars. I almost cut it, but in the end I wanted Inej to assert that she loved Kaz, and I wanted Kaz to be able to tell her that he wasn't ready for her to love him that way, but he wanted to be.

Pekka in draft 1 was the captain of the ship, but if he was running the Dime Lions when Kaz was 9-13, that would only give him a few years to get to that position. So I adjusted him to the owner. 

Chapter 15: Harmony Hall, Vampire Weekend

I had the worst time with this chapter, it got rewritten about 90 times

six of crows winter guard headcannons!

okay so this is sort of obscure and a lot of people might not understand it (unless you're both a grishaverse fan and happen to do color/winter guard, in which case, can we be friends?) but this is a personal fun thing for me as a guard member so yeah <3

Kaz: He only does rifle line, and a bit of sabre. his sleight of hand/arm strength is very useful for it. he doesn't do flagline. hates it. can you imagine kaz brekker spinning a flag? yeah, neither can i. he's the type of person who learns dropspins on rifle, watches someone do a five, goes "like this?" and tosses it perfectly. (believe me, there's a girl on my team like this.)

Inej: Team captain. does flag and sabre, as well as some rifle, but doesn't like it as much. sabre and flag are just more graceful and fluid, like she is. needless to say, she's awesome at everything. Being a literal acrobat, too, she excels at dance more than anyone else on the team. Big stunts and dance solos are often incorporated just for her, because she's so captivating and elegant in the way she moves.

Jesper: being hyper-adhd and unable to sit still, he's constantly trying new things and wanting to learn every piece of equipment he can. he even does a bit of baton on the side. he's kind of a wild card, and there's not one particular thing he excels at. i think rifle would secretly be his favorite, though, because gun. he is really great at super high tosses, and likes to show off to wylan. "did you know i can toss a fourteen on rifle?" "that's not physically possible, jesper." "uh, yeah, i know it is, because i can do it."

Wylan: he plays flute in marching band during marching season, and he only really joined winter guard because Jesper was doing it and asked him to do it with him. so he sticks to flagline, but is working on weapons on the side. he works a lot on the production of the show, too. He writes some of his own original music for it and mixes all the audio/sound effects.

Matthias: i have a little headcannon that he plays snare drum in marching band, and, like Wylan, only joined after copious begging from Nina. he won't admit it, but he actually kind of likes it. rifle, that is. he isn't a big fan of flag, but being big and strong, he's able to do really impressive tosses on both pieces of equipment. doesn't do sabre. it's too tiny and light for him, he hates it.

Nina: steals the show performance-wise, she gets really into roles, especially dramatic ones. often gets the team more points just because of her standout performance abilities. big dance and flag girl. she does some weapon line, but much prefers flag, and always gets assigned impressive solos on it. she also helps with costume and set design, and always brings flare to shows. is a big team motivator, comes up with all the traditions and team parties.

I was using fucking google drive to sync my work between my laptop and desktop for the first few semesters of college and it fucking sucked! If you don't already know how to use git, learn it now or very soon, cuz there will probably be later classes that require it and it'll be so incredibly useful to already know how to use it! Anyway, as far as like actual coursework or general CS knowledge that'll be useful? I feel like that's highly dependent on the particular program you're in tbh. Like if you were going to my alma mater, (doubtful, it's in upstate New York and you say "university" instead of "college" so I assume you're in the UK or otherwise non-American,) I'd give you all sorts of advice about specifically the Data Structures course, which is the course after CS 1 that's notorious for the sheer difficulty of its assignments and tests. We used C++ there. I hear many other programs have data structures courses taught in Java or Python that are just a complete walk in the park. So who knows!

That said, something that was very generally useful for me was to come in with a more-or-less solid understanding of how code is actually executed in hardware, how assembly/machine code works and how higher-level languages map to it. I spent the summer before my freshman year working through Hacking: The Art of Exploitation by Jon Erickson, so I was comfy writing low-level C and using a debugger, and had a pretty decent understanding of how software could fail. That was all tremendously helpful. (Also that book fucks really hard and you should definitely give it a look at some point in the future!)

On the more theoretical side of things, I think you might already be ahead of my freshman self! Certainly you already know Haskell, with which I wasn't acquainted until like my fourth or fifth semester as part of the programming languages course. If you're not already familiar with the concepts of formal systems/languages/syntax and computability/decidability, maybe give Gödel Escher Bach a read (or at least the first few chapters where he introduces all that stuff). I think that was the most generally useful theoretical knowledge I had going in. Certainly that was about half of the subject matter of my introductory Foundations of Computer Science course (the other half being combinatorics and finite automata/Turing machines).

Prologue - Before 

Elham Creed had never known what it was like to be part of a family. From a Ravkan orphanage, to the Little Palace, finally landing in Ketterdam, the Barrel, she had never felt the sense of safety and security she had longed for as far back as she could remember. She wouldn’t find it in Ketterdam.

At 13 years old, with nothing but a collapsable sword belted around her waist and the clothes on her back, she had spent the first few days in the Barrel stalking around, stealing scraps of food where she could, trying to get her bearings. The frigid air sweeping over the harbour into the edge of town at night where she slept was enough to make Elham almost miss her room at the Little Palace.

Almost.

She wouldn’t go back, not after her mentor, Baghra’s, warnings. All she could do was push forward and move on. She spent nights alone ducked away into abandoned shacks, using her powers to spark warmth and light, practicing control. Being an inferni had its perks, but Elham was special. She didn’t need a starter, or a piece of flint to create a spark she could turn into a flame. She could create the flame all on her own. She kept this and her powers a secret, however. If the Darkling had taken interest in her abilities, there’s no doubt one of the Barrel bosses would bait her into doing their bidding.

And Elham Creed would do no one's bidding. She would be no one’s puppet.

Elham remembered the first time she killed a man. Coincidentally, it was also the first time she met Kaz Brekker. She was now 14, making her way towards the harbour, working on one of the odd jobs she could scam her way into. She headed past the White Rose on the way, one of the most frequented brothels in Ketterdam.

She headed down the alley behind the sorry excuse for an establishment, when she heard a scream. She rounded the corner, to find a man with his hand wrapped tightly around one of the employed girls' wrists, the other hand making its way up her hip, pinning her against the wall.

It’s a shame. Maybe if he had heard her coming, he could have avoided the sword held up to his neck. He could have avoided his death.

Most men in the Barrel, as Elham had come to realize, were not good men. While the “pigeons,” as she had come to know the tourists as, would have tucked tail and ran, this man did not. He only scoffed.

“A sword?” The man had slurred at her, clearly drunk. “You do realize I could have you shot and dead in a second, and get back to this lovely girl you so rudely interrupted me from. Although, you’re a pretty thing. Exotic. Maybe I’ll have you instead,” he had said, reaching for the pistol strapped to his hip.

Big mistake.

With her eyes glossing over, and a rage building inside her, she quickly removed the sword from his throat, and ran it through his back. He sputtered, and fell to his knees, choking on his own blood, or maybe his last words, Elham didn’t take the time to figure out which. She walked around to face his front as he gazed up at her, clutching his stomach with wide eyes. She breathed heavily, eyes wild.

“Good riddance.”

She lifted her foot and sent him sprawling back against the street, blood pooling around him. She glanced back at the girl who was still frozen against the wall, and her eyes softened.

“Thank you,” she whispered, before hurrying back into the White Rose.  Elham only nodded, taking a breath, before turning to head towards the harbour.

That’s when she saw him.

A boy, no older than 14, dressed in black, gloves fitted to his hands. He seemed to be analyzing her, gears turning in his head. Kaz hadn’t mastered his pokerface yet, and Elham was good at reading people. She was unsure why she didn’t feel threatened by his presence, especially since he had just witnessed her kill someone, and she had no idea what his intentions were.

“You just killed a Dime Lion.”

Elham had heard of the gang before, and their leader, Pekka Rollins. She knew she was going to regret interfering with gang business, but her head was beginning to cloud, tears forming in her eyes. But she had saved that girl, she had saved herself, it was a split second decision. Unable to form words, she met the boy's stare.

She only slowly nodded in response.

After pondering for a moment, he had offered to take her to his boss, claiming that she’d be a valuable asset to the team. He’d never admit to her that it really was because he couldn’t bear to see the Barrel swallow up and harden another innocent kid, and maybe it was the way her eyes had glazed over, or how tattered her clothes were, or simply because she didn’t look at him like he was some sort of monster, but he took her in.

It was true, Haskell had been needing a new asset to the team, someone young and quick who could take care of themselves. Bringing a girl back to the Dregs was a risk, and Kaz was in no position to make himself look weak around the gang, but he just couldn’t leave her there in the street. That part of the Rietveld in him hadn’t died yet.

To this day, Elham isn’t sure what made her accept his offer to come with him. After almost a year in Ketterdam, she trusted no one, got close to no one. She had no business getting involved with a gang, she could have walked away, continuing to the harbour for the job assigned to her. There was something about him, though. And going with him was arguably the best decision she has made, she had decided.

Elham had been part of the Dregs for a few months, slowly gaining a reputation for herself. Kaz had taken a liking to her, almost admiring how fast she had taken to a life of crime, to the rigidity of the Barrel. He found a secret comfort in her presence, and in the fact that her story was similar to his. She hadn’t revealed much about her past to him, just enough to keep him intrigued.

And he was, despite his brain demanding he think otherwise, intrigued. She was ambitious, and cunning. Most interestingly, however, she was ruthless.

She had killed many men since the day she met Kaz. Barrel men were not good men. Elham made it a point to seek out the men who only caused pain. Men like the first man she had killed, men like Pekka Rollins and his Dime Lions. Men like them didn’t get to cause all the pain and suffering they did, and live.

Kaz had dubbed her, “The Valkyrie,” once, while on a job. The other Dregs took a liking to it, and it stuck. She asked him many times what it meant, why he would call her that, but he only smirked to himself, amused by her new found reputation, much to her annoyance.

He finally explained it to her, the night he broke his leg. They had been paired on the job together, and it had gone disastrously. They were sprinting along a rooftop, when Kaz made a bad landing, completely breaking the bone in his leg.

It was the first time she touched him.

When she first joined the Dregs, she had quickly picked up on the fact that he didn’t want to be touched. She could sense his unease when they had to be close together on jobs in tight spaces, or when one of the drunken Dregs would pat him on the back for a job well done, or during a brawl with a rival gang. She always kept her distance, respecting his space.

But this time, she had no choice. Kaz was crying out in pain, and Elham knew she had to get him back to the Slat to get his leg reset, and out of harm's way. She clicked the button on her belt and grabbed for the hilt of her sword, and with a flick of her wrist, it unfolded into place to its full length. Kaz had pulled himself to a kneeling position, desperately trying to hide his vulnerability, eyes frantically looking for an escape. She offered the hilt of her sword to him.

“Kaz, you have to let me help you. I’m sorry, but you have to let me. Hold onto the hilt, and on three, I’m going to tug under your arm to get you standing. We’ve got to get you back to the Slat before you pass out from the pain or we get ourselves killed out here.” He only gave her a pained look, before nodding, and they slowly made their way back to the Slat, with him putting as much weight on the hilt as he could, Elham trying her best to make sure he couldn’t feel her fingers through his jacket as she dragged him along.

Hours later, while he lay unconscious on the cot in his room, Elham had anxiously waited in the chair in the corner of the room. She hadn’t realized how much she had grown to care for Kaz, for him and her life with the Dregs. She knew she would have killed for him that night if it came to it, no doubt about it in her mind. Kaz only awoke for a few minutes that night, and had mumbled a few words to her.

“Do you know what Valkyrie means? It means ‘chooser of the slain.’ It seems like you choose who lives and dies around the Barrel. Killing men, making sure I don’t die. It’s fitting, isn’t it?” He had joked to her, the faintest of grins tugging at his lips. Elham had sucked in a breath, and offered a small smile at him, standing to leave as he drifted off, knowing he was going to be alright. Broken, as she knew he would think of himself, but alright.

It had been a few years in the Dregs, as the Crows slowly formed. First Jesper, then Inej. The Dregs had become a force to be reckoned with in Ketterdam. Despite their ages and newness to the life of a gang, The Sharpshooter, the Wraith, the Valkyrie, and Dirtyhands were well known identities around the Barrel.

They had hardened over the years, Kaz more so than any of them, the Barrel being a quick teacher in offering harsh life lessons.

Elham remembered the first time one of them uttered the words, “no mourners, no funerals.” Inej had been interested in what Elham’s name meant, Elham meaning inspiration, Creed meaning belief or law. A particular favorite member of the Dregs, and a friend of Rotty’s, had been killed on a job. Elham took this particularly hard, he was one of the men that had made her transition into the gang easier.

They sat silently in her room together, when Jesper spoke softly. “You know, I’ve been thinking about your name. Creed. He slowly slid his cane towards her, softly tapping the end at the base of her ankle, before returning to his original position.

It was one of Elham’s favorite memories of them. Of him.

“At three forty am this morning, the Antiterror Division was called to the scene of a road traffic accident following a report of shots fired. A Northwall Battalion prisoner transport van was spotted on the edge of the road, having rolled after being hit by a silver pickup truck. The driver and passenger of the vehicle were armed but the augmented soldier accompanying the transport had neutralised the threat prior to the arrival of Antiterror.” 

Nelson licks his lips. They’re starting to bleed. “However, the prisoner assigned to the transport could not be found at the scene or in the immediate area around the scene. We are treating this incident as an escape, and the prisoner is now a fugitive of the law.”

He gestures to the projector behind him. “We have identified the prisoner as Haskell I. Haveter, who was being taken to a custody hearing in Nation House.” 

The screen behind him is simple, a ‘Have You Seen This Man?’ poster, Haveter’s blonde-fringed face front and centre, a slight smug smile, the photo on his Department ID card, the tip line beneath it, and a warning in bolded red not to approach or attempt to detain him, just to call the number. 

“The amount of blood found at the scene, inside the transfer van itself, leads us to believe that Haveter is seriously injured. In addition he was recently flogged, as you may know, those wounds haven't healed yet, and therefore he needs medical attention and he needs it now.” Nelson rubs his eyes. He’s exhausted. So fucking tired. “Hence we’ve brought in Search And Rescue to help with the manhunt. We need to find this man, for both his own safety and yours.”

He looks up and stares into the camera in front of him. “If you see this man, call us. If you are asked to help by this man, call us. If you know the whereabouts of this man, call us. There’s a dedicated number, or if you can’t remember that, triple zero, ask for that number there and they’ll put you through. Do not approach him, or interact with him. Although he is hurt he may still be very dangerous.”

 He hesitates. “If you are this man, I have one thing to say to you. We as professionals have a duty to minimise your suffering. Even if you don’t care about your own life, I can only imagine the amount of pain you are in right now. Emotional and physical. Please let us help you. Hand yourself in.”

Nelson pauses, casting his gaze over the journalists, looking for questions. Fucking journalists. Fucking journalists. Fuck them all. He takes a deep breath.

“Maira Abel. What made this a terrorist incident?”

“Hi, Ms Abel. Thanks for your question. Haveter, due to his previous position as Chairman-General and… history, is a known target for terrorism. He represents to a lot of these groups a figurehead for things they disagree with, most often the measures the Department takes to maintain law and order and stability here in the State. The driver and passenger as well as the truck used to hit the van were all identified by the Antiterrors as belonging to the group Reclaim England, an anti-arms terrorist group. Anything else?”

“No, thank you, Major.”

She sits down.

Nelson picks out another journalist.

“Daniel Cunnigham. Why was the augmented soldier unable to secure the prisoner before he escaped? That’s what this is, right? An escape?”

“We are treating this incident as an escape because a prisoner who is supposed to be in custody is not in custody. That’s right.” He takes a deep breath. And he lies.

He lies. “I can assure you, the augmented soldier attempted to secure the prisoner again but was unable to. They don’t try. They do or they fail.”

He picks another journalist.

“How dangerous is Haveter, exactly? Do we need to be worried?”

“He’s charged with capital murder and a total of three separate formal assault complaints which we’re looking into as part of the case to dishonourably displace him from the Department.” Nelson shrugs. “If we thought he would come in peacefully, we wouldn’t be heading this, Search And Rescue would be. As it stands this is still a Department operation. People should be aware that he is potentially dangerous, but should also be aware that we are on standby to intervene.”

Another question.

Ms Abel again. Nelson tries to recall what paper she’s from and can’t. He has a headache, the dull squeeze at the back of his head making his eyes water whenever he looks up from the papers on the lectern. Cecil’s going to kill him what with the amount of overtime he’s doing to sort this whole thing out.

“What’s with the compassionate spin on things when he’s committed a capital crime-”

Prick.

Nelson finds himself interrupting her.

“The ‘compassionate spin on things’ is exactly as I said earlier. We as professionals have a duty to minimise unnecessary suffering. Ever wonder why we don’t burn people at the stake anymore?” He gestures for her to take a seat. “When we lay out in law a sentence, that is the sentence. Nothing more. If it’s life in prison, it’s life in prison. If it's being flogged,  we make sure the whip is clean. We treat them after, we clean the wounds, we administer pain relief. We don’t just leave people to suffer.”

Nelson points to the screen behind him with a flat palm. “Miss Abel, this man's sentence is his sentence and that is that. That is what the law demands he serve, not a long and drawn out agony where he’ll inevitably bleed out on the side of the road or if he manages to patch himself up, freeze or starve out in a field somewhere which is exactly what I am trying to prevent here!”

He realises he forgot to breathe in the last half of that sentence and pauses to inhale and reorient himself, clasping his hands again. “We owe offenders compassion. Put that in your headline, won’t you?” Some of the journalists put their hands down. Nelson looks across the room. “Is there anything else? No?” He picks up his papers. “Then I think we’re done here.”

He needs a smoke, he realises as he walks out. He slams the door to the conference room. God fucking damn the press, the thinks, feeling down his coat for his cigarettes and lighter. He finds neither. "Fuck me," he mutters. "What a day."

"Sir?" asks Angelo quizzically, stood outside the room. He's a little bruised up but doesn't seem to be bothered. "Is everything okay?"

"I just saved your hide, Morrow," says Nelson quietly, slapping a ten pound note into Angelo's hand. "So do me a favour and run down to the store. Get me a pack and a lighter. And try not to let any prisoners out on the way there just because you fancy them, like you did with Haveter, aye?" He claps Angelo on the shoulder.

"Sir, I don’t follow," says Morrow, scratching his head, a look of total confusion on his face. "I don't understand what you're implying."

"Sure you do." Nelson laughs bitterly. "Shoo, before I change my mind." He watches Angelo leave, an amused smile on his face.
