Under the Roses.  A Valentines day special.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Genre: FLUFF pure fluff. I am too soft.
Wordcount: 1.8k
Summary: Class 1a celebrates Valentines day for the whole weekend. The girls had an idea to hang roses up like mistletoe. You spend the whole weekend watching Todoroki under the roses with every other girl except you, but you didn’t realize he meant for you to be there instead.
Tumblr media
“Y/n, why are you staring into space?” Midoriya asked, breaking your focus.
You were looking at what had to be the stupidest idea you’ve ever seen. And, of course, you had been a part of its making. This year Valentine’s day happened to fall on a Sunday so the class had thought it would be a lot more fun to celebrate the whole weekend. At first, you were excited, it was going to be a nice break from classwork and all the mishaps that happened with training.
All the girls got together to sort through a box of old decorations when class ended Friday afternoon. After a few minutes of looking, Hagakure squealed. She was holding up a ball of mistletoe.
“We should totally hang this up! It’ll be so much fun!” She said and some of the other girls nodded.
“The only thing is that it has nothing to do with valentines’ day,” Momo said a slight frown on her face. “It may look a bit tacky.”
“What if instead of mistletoe we used roses?” You asked, not serious. It would’ve been cool to start a new tradition with the other classes, but you didn’t know if this would be enough. But the girls' reactions made it seem like you were a genius, and it was settled.
Throughout the day as you walked around the dorm you found more and more balls of roses hung up. They were all over, at least three in the common room, one in each hallway, in the kitchen. Everywhere you looked it seemed like roses were hung up. Momo and the other girls worked faster than you thought. It was going to be an interesting weekend.
Unlike mistletoe, the girls decided that if you found yourself with someone under the roses you had to show some form of affection or appreciation. Whether it be a hug, high five, or even a kiss. But of course, if someone was uncomfortable with it, they did not have to participate. You thanked Ochako for that part of it. You had seen Mineta sneaking around the roses several times, waiting for whatever poor prey he had his eyes on. A couple times they were on you. You just sped up your pace and passed him.
Friday went by fast and you hadn’t found yourself under the roses more than a couple times. The first person was Momo, and the two of you shared a hug while giggling. Momo was surprisingly very good at hugs. You bumped into Midoriya under them when you were heading for your dorm room. His face immediately turned red and he started to mumble. You just held both hands up for a double high five which he sighed in relief at.
Saturday morning the class spirits seemed to be higher than before. Everyone had a smile on their face, and you couldn’t help but thinking it was from the roses. You had even seen Kaminari and Sero tackled Bakugo in a hug, and he was yelling but he hadn’t resisted. It was nice seeing everyone enjoy the weekend. That’s all you wanted. Even if it was just a small break away from everything, all the stress and heaviness from weeks prior washed away. Spending time with your friends was enough. The first time you saw Todoroki standing under the roses, Momo’s hand in his, your heart stopped for just a second. He placed a small kiss on the back of her hand and then walked away. You were only a little jealous.
The jealousy grew though, somehow Todoroki kept finding himself under different roses hanging throughout the dorm and somehow you had witnessed each one. No matter how hard you tried, you couldn’t force yourself in following him under the roses. The feelings you had for him were no stranger to you. But for some reason, you had a hard time expressing them. There had been a few times where you just barely exposed them to him.
Each time the encounters were fleeting. Always being interrupted by something or someone. You figured fate just wasn’t in your corner, so you settled for the long glances, brief touches in passing, and occasionally, the soft words exchanged between you two. Once there had been just enough time for a small connection. Standing close to each other, the air between you tense and full of longing. The conversation long gone in your mind now. Todoroki’s phone lit up with an incoming call. Before he turned to leave, he leaned in and placed a small kiss on the corner of your lips. Whispering a soft apology. You wanted that connection again, even only a moment of it.
Sunday came fast. Valentine's day. Nearly two whole days had passed, you missed your chance several times. You had seen Todoroki under the roses several times now, with each girl from the class and even some of the boys. His lips touching each girl’s hands burned into your eyes. His arms wrapping around the boys seemed to tease you. It was starting to become too much. If it wasn’t for your hesitancy every time you saw him walk toward or near a bunch of roses you could’ve felt that closeness for yourself. You were running out of time now and you weren’t even sure if you’d even be able to finally grasp what you wanted.
“Y/n, who have you been under the roses with?” Mina asked, plopping down on the couch next to you.
“Most of the girls, Midoriya, Sero, Sato and Kirishima.” You answered and smiled. Everyone had such fun reactions to being under it. Kirishima’s was your favorite so far. He had grinned and attacked you into a bear hug, picking you up and spinning you around. He ended it with a fist bump, and you couldn’t help but laugh at him. He was like a big brother.
“You kiss anyone yet?” Ochako asked and Mina wiggled her eyebrows. You shook your head and couldn’t help glancing at Todoroki across the room.
“Ohhhhh, I see why.” Mina grinned and nudged your shoulder. “Your waiting on a certain someone.”
“Don’t be so loud! And don’t look over there you’re too obvious.” You said laughing now. You couldn’t even deny her, she knew she was right. She didn’t get a chance to respond before you heard your name being called out.
Todoroki called you again and motioned for you to go over to him. In the back of your mind, you felt disappointment twinge when you saw there weren’t any roses above him. Mina winked at you when you got up and went to him.
“What’s up?” You asked. You didn’t know what you were hoping for exactly, but you could feel your heart beating faster now.
“Remember in class a couple days ago when you asked about my hero costume?” He asked and you nodded, tilting your head a little bit. You wanted to know about the accessories and who the designer was for them. “I emailed them and asked if they had any openings to meet with you. They just responded with a couple dates.”
“Oh really! That’s really cool.” You said a distracted. No matter how many times you had been close to Todoroki before, he always seemed to catch you off guard. Maybe it was due to his quirk, but he had a warmth in the air around him. He always smelled so good, comforting.
“I had also sent the design of your current hero costume to them, they sent back a new one. Do you want to take a look?” You could only nod, as he got closer to you.
There was a magnetic force pulling you to him and it took everything in you to fight against it. He turned his phone to you but there was just a loading screen. He muttered something about bad service and moved back a few steps, he didn’t have to say anything for you to move with him. Your eyes were still fixed on the screen, trying to hide how he affected you.
“There we go,” He said, and you were confused a bit, the screen was still loading. Your focus was broken as he placed a hand on your arm and put his phone in a pocket. “I finally got you.”
It took a second to register what he was saying, but then you looked up. Your eyes were met with roses and you could feel your heart beating faster. He had tricked you.
“I’ve been trying this whole weekend to get you under here with me. You’re a hard one to lure in, Y/n.” He said and you met his eyes. There was a softness in them. The warmth you were craving the past couple of days crept through your skin now. A small smirk on his face caused your cheeks to burn. You couldn’t find yourself to say anything in response. “I’m sorry you had to see me with everyone else. It was supposed to be you.”
“You knew I was watching?” You whispered, being so close to him was taking your breath away. His face was inches away now. Your bodies gravitated to each other, almost touching. Todoroki nodded in response.
“This is for you,” He began and moved his right hand to cup your cheek. You felt yourself melt into his cool hand. “and only you.”
A second passed and it felt like a lifetime. His body flush against yours now, his dual-colored eyes bearing into yours. He was the only thing you could think about, overwhelming everything else. The bustle in the common room washed away from your peripheral and your vision tunneled to him. You felt heat soaring through your chest and a coolness on your skin.
This was the only thing you had wanted. Who leaned in first was impossible to tell, the magnetic connection finally pulled the two of you together. The way his lips moved against yours was addicting. Todoroki invaded all of your senses, even time seemed to slow down. You weren’t sure if you dreamt this moment before, but the raw emotion of his arms around you, your fingers tangling in his hair sent you soaring.
Time started slowly again once you pulled back a bit. Todoroki rested his forehead against yours, staring into your eyes still. You had forgotten about the others in the room until you heard someone cheer and clap. But you still couldn’t give it any focus, only able to take in the boy in front of you.
“You’re so warm.” Were the only words you were able to get out. He laughed breathlessly and you blushed again.
“Happy Valentine's day, darling.” He purred leaning in and placing another kiss on the corner of your lips. You remembered the fleeting moment he had done that before. This is what you had been waiting on. You barely had a chance to responded before he laced his fingers through yours and started to pull you with him.
“Where are you going?” You asked laughing a bit as he dragged you across the room, trying not to look at the faces of your classmates.
“To kiss you under the rest of the roses.” He answered. Another blush erupted across your face.

advice for incoming high school freshmen
1. this is when your grades start to really matter. every homework assignment, quiz, and exam counts toward your final GPA as a high school student. your GPA is extremely important for college applications and class rank, so do NOT slack off — do all your homework, study for all tests, and pay attention during class.
2. try not to skip class! skipping one day or even one class can set you far behind. you could have lots of classwork to make up, so if you ever have to miss class, make sure you tell your teacher(s) ahead of time. this shows that you care about their class, and they might even excuse you from the classwork or give you extra time to complete it.
3. it’s okay to get a bad grade once in a while. even if it’s on a big test or project. some teachers may allow you to retake a test or assign extra credit. most teachers want you to succeed in their class, so just ask them for ways to make up your unsatisfactory grade during office hours. however, it’s best to avoid doing this for old assignments/tests the week before grades get finalized as it will give your teachers the impression that all you care about is your GPA. dm me (@threadlemons) for an email template you can use if you’re looking to improve your grade near the end of the semester though :)
4. join clubs you're interested in. during the school year, stay in the ones you enjoy and leave ones you dislike. at the end of the year, you should be actively involved in 1-3 clubs. participating in clubs can help you make new friends with similar interests, improve communication skills, and teach you how to work effectively with others!
5. do not procrastinate too much on assignments, especially the ones that are a big part of your grade. you’ll feel more and more stressed as the due date approaches and could end up submitting low quality work
6. be prepared. high school is so much harder than middle school. you'll have more work to do and classes will become more difficult. it'll take some time to adjust, and that’s okay. something important i’ve learned during my freshman year is to never slack off on any assignments. (i once turned in an assignment worth only 15 points, but it brought my grade down from a 93% to a 89%. i ended the school year with a B in that class because of that one assignment)
7. know your schedule and find out where each of your classes are located. this way you won’t get lost as easily on the first day.
8. get involved in the sport you like. it's easier to make the team freshman year and improve than waiting until sophomore year when tryouts are harder. if you're not interested in a sport, that's alright too! not everyone is athletic, we’re all good at different things.
9. that being said, do not prioritize sports or other extracurriculars over your grades.
10. be nice to your teachers. keep in mind respect should go both ways!
11. do not stand in the middle of the hallway to talk to your friends or walk slowly. it's annoying and people might even push you.
12. always have headphones, extra pencils, and a charger on you
13. be kind to everyone. don’t start drama. hating on others is unnecessary. they probably won’t be in your life for a long time anyway.
14. popularity is not important. it means nothing after you graduate, so just know who your true friends are. quality over quantity.
15. do your homework asap. don’t wait until 8 pm to start. also, doing homework from time to time over the weekend will make sunday evening a lot less stressful
16. there will be bad days. days when you feel like you can’t get out of bed. days when it seems like stress is the only thing you’re feeling. days when you just want to give up. but you have to fight through it. have a cup of tea. reread that old book you love. rewatch one of your favorite movies/shows. take a break and try to relax. time heals almost everything, it’ll all turn out fine.

More Haps in Madrid
Hey Everyone!
So far in Madrid I have been having an absolute blast, but am definitely struggling to balance schoolwork with going out and exploring. (Below, some friends and me exploring at Bisou the club.)
Tumblr media
The classes here are definitely not going to be as hard as at UMich, but some of them won’t be as easy as expected. Going into this experience, everyone I talked to said the SAPIENS classes at Comillas are very easy, but some of my classes will definitely require some work. In particular, my Spanish Culture Through Films class and Fluid Mechanics will take more work than I anticipated. The Film class had an entire documentary to watch due on the third class, and has big projects that are already beginning. The fluid mechanics class is also going to be a lot of work, probably because I’m still a sophomore and this is the first 300 level engineering class I have taken. It’s very hard to balance this classwork with going out and also exploring the city, especially since three days a week I have class at 8 AM. I love going out at night, and Madrid is definitely the city to do so. If you get to the club before 2 AM it will often be quite empty, depending on the place you go. However, many of the programs that are for international students in Madrid offer free drinks and/or entry to clubs and bars. The program at Comillas UNITY has something happening almost every night except Sundays, where you can get discounts on lots of things. However, the catch is that you usually have to arrive before 1:30 in order to cash in on these. If you go with a large group of international people this can be really fun, especially because it gives you time to bond with people, but if you go in a small group it’s often really awkward because the place will be empty. You also should be aware that it can take 30 minutes of waiting in line to get in, so if you go 15 min before the free period ends you may miss it. The other problem with this setup is that nightlife often goes until 5 or 6 AM, with locals arriving to the club around 3 AM. This means that if you want to take advantage of free entry and cheaper drinks (which I highly recommend because it can get really pricey), you have to wait 2-3 hours to meet locals. However, when my friends and I arrived early to the club Bisou it was actually nice because we got to take some pictures with the cool art in there.
Tumblr media
Clubs I’ve liked so far have been Larios Cafe (which was the best around 4 AM when all the locals came but still tons of fun before), Joy on Monday nights (at 10 PM they have a free salsa/bachata class, pictured below),
Tumblr media
and Sala Cocó on Mondays which also has free salsa/bachata lessons at 10.
I have also been trying to explore my neighborhood more this week as well. My favorite new place I found is this bulk food store that also sells plants and fresh breads.
Tumblr media
It has such a cute atmosphere and the people working there are incredibly nice. I have yet to figure out the name of this place though.
Tumblr media
This weekend I am on my first trip out of the country of Spain (to Poland), and was shocked at how easy it was to get to the airport and to my gate. I had a 6 AM flight on RyanAir on a Saturday morning, and the ticket said I should get there 2 hours in advance. At 3 AM I called an Uber for about 30 Euros, and it said it was 7 min away. (I live in Malasaña, about 30 min away from the airport.) At 3:30 the Uber still said it was 12 min away so I cancelled it and tried to call another one, but it was going to be 58 Euros so I called a Cabify (which was 30 Euros). Cabify is basically the Spanish version of Uber, except the drivers are super nice and always offer you water or snacks, and it’s generally cheaper than Uber. The guy came in the 6 min that I was told it would and it was a smooth ride to the airport. (Just for reference, you can also take the metro to the airport, but it does not run between the hours of 2 and 6 AM, and this is way way cheaper.) I had downloaded the RyanAir app so I didn’t have to print my boarding pass, which I’m very glad I did. At the airport, there was no line for security, and I ended up sitting and waiting for an hour and a half (although it was in the middle of the night so I’m not surprised it wasn’t packed). I went to the departures board to find my flight and didn’t see Krakow on the list. Turns out I forgot that the names of places are different in other languages, so I actually should have been looking for Cracovia, which I found out by looking for the flight number instead. Altogether the experience was very easy and not stressful.
Side note, Poland has beautiful amber jewelry and pottery, which I highly recommend looking at if you are ever in Poland.

Color Systems and Associations
Color Systems How color is created depends on where it will be seen and how a communications piece will be produced. The most popular color systems are RGB and CMYK.
Tumblr media
RGB Is an additive color system that uses the base colors red, green, and blue to produce a wide variety of colors. In the RGB palette white is the additive combination of all the primary colors and black is produced by the absence of light. Screen and display based design, TV’s video screens, monitors, mobile devices and cameras all use RGB color system.
CMYK Is a four-color subtractive process which includes the color cyan, magenta, yellow and black. The process is considered “subtractive” because the inks used in printing subtract or mask background (usually the white of the paper) using a halftone dot pattern.
CMYK is used in offset lithography and in most cases designers change all graphics and imagery to CMYK before sending files to a printer.
Tumblr media
The Pantone Color Matching System Is largely a standardized color reproduction system. By standardizing the colors, different manufacturers in different locations can all refer to the Pantone system to make sure colors match without direct contact with one another.
One such use is standardizing colors in the CMYK process. A majority of the world’s printed material is produced using the CMYK process, and there is a special subset of Pantone colors that can be reproduced using CMYK .
The Pantone system also allows for many special colors to be produced, such as metallics and fluorescents. While most of the Pantone system colors are beyond the printed CMYK gamut, it was only in 2001 that Pantone began providing translations of their existing system with screen-based colors.
Tumblr media
Color as Provocateur
Color can inspire and tease. It can make us laugh and provoke a response viewer. Throughout history, color has been used for political agitation, and as a tool for dissent. Revolutions, countries, and even political parties are often associated with particular hues.
Tumblr media
Yet the same color can have different meaning in different situations. Both Communism and the US Republican party are associated with the color red, even though these groups have radically different ideals and goals.
Tumblr media
Since color takes on meaning through context and repeated use, certain movements may choose to adopt specific colors. The environmental movement has used “green” so often that the color has become linguistic shorthand unto itself.
Tumblr media

Color and Psychology Color imparts meaning and evokes emotion. A person’s response to color and tone can help determine how information is understood and can affect whether a viewer likes an artwork and if a consumer buys a product or uses a client’s service.
Scientists and psychologists have studied the relationship between people’s conscious and subconscious perception of color and their associated meanings.
Tumblr media
Map of California drought conditions published July 2014 on Bloomberg News
Mood and symbolism Color affects mood and behavior. It can change how we perceive an artwork, image or product. As much as 80% of our sensory perception is determined by sight, so what we see is paramount to our understanding of the world around us.
Tumblr media
“Ever since our argument I’ve been blue”
“I saw red when you lied to me”
“I was green with envy when I saw their new house”
These statements are emotional. They expressed an emotional reaction and somehow a color reference makes the meaning clearer, because color appeals to our emotions and feelings. Color can create an atmosphere to which we respond.
warm colors like yellow oranges and reds instinctively give a feeling of warmth and evoke happy cheerful reactions. Cool colors like greens and blues are automatically associated with quieter less outgoing feelings and can express melancholy or depression.
The power of color to evoke and emotional response is undeniable. The contacts or situation artist creates any composition determines whether the effect is inventive or merely a cliché.
Given the importance of sight and the prevalence of color in the natural world, it is not surprising that humans come to ascribe meaning to particular hues and color relationships.
Tumblr media
Red is often considered a color of Love or Passion but also anger.
Tumblr media
Consider how color is being used in the two advertisements below. How do they make you feel? What do the color tell us?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Culture and Place Culture and geographical location affects people’s perception and understanding of color. Even our way of describing color is determined by where we come from. Terms for red, green, yellow, and blue are part of almost every spoken language . How people perceive hues and the meanings that are ascribed to particular colors may be culturally significant but are not necessarily universal.
In the US the typical wedding color is white however, in and asian country white is a color associated with death and funerals.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Associated Meaning & Color Symbolism When used correctly, cultural associations and meaning can help convey a message and put a viewer at ease or, depending on an artists intent, ill at ease. How people understand content is going to depend on their age, gender, wealth, and country of origin. These factors may alter whether one has a negative or positive associations to the colors used in a composition.
“I caught him red-handed”
“I told her a little white lie”
“Don’t worry he’s true blue”
We frequently utter statements That employ color references to describe character traits or human behavior. These color references are symbolic. The above statements symbolize abstract concepts or ideas:  Fidelity sin and innocence. These colors do you not stand for tangible things rather they represent mental conceptual qualities. symbolic colors are generally learned and shift from culture to culture.  Different eras and different cultures and then different color symbols.
Take for examples the idea of nature which most people associate with the color green. Perhaps they envision a serene green landscape of hills covered in trees. In the picture below green is used to convey living nature the color is sharp, bright and warm.
Tumblr media
Green is used in the image below to also portray nature but to a much different effect. The green in this post apocalyptic landscape is murky, a tone of green and cold.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Up until recently, black was taboo for food packaging - now it may suggest a premium product like above.
White in our culture represents purity and innocence but we also use it for the face of killers in slasher movies where the body count is usually associated with women that loose their innocence. In slasher movies the victims are usually women that have intimate relations.

Classwork
*Class exercises are due on your tumblr by Sunday 11:59PM on 4/5/2020.*
CMYK digital exercises in Illustrator I would like for you all to make a series of digital works using Illustrator and specifically only using the CMYK color setting to alter color. For each exercise you are not to use any preselected color available to you in Illustrator. You must manually make the color through the color tool in the upper left corner of the program workspace.
Tumblr media
When you first open the tool it will look like the image below. Click on the small double arrows to the left of the word “color” and the image will change to reveal a CMYK slider.
Tumblr media
Use the slider to create the colors you need for the following exercises.
Exercise 1
Create five small color squares of colors as preselected color options in Illustrator. (see below)
Tumblr media
Directly below use the CMYK slider to create corresponding grey tones for each color. (Finished example below). Screen shot this work or save and post on your tumblr.
Tumblr media
Exercise 2
Create three variations of perceptually mixed colors using your shape tool and color slider. Again, you must use the CMYK slider to create the colors. (Example below) Make sure each perceptual mixing of color utilizes different colors and a range of colors. Experiment and see how you can create the illusion of transparency. This means you will be using the CMYK slider to create what you think the mixed color/the new color would be. The parent colors will remain the same and the new baby color will be chosen by you from the slider (you can not use the opacity slider for this exercise). This means for each mixture you create, you will be making 3 separate shapes and using the third to overlap the two originals. You do not need to use squares - they can be any shape you would like. Screen shot this work or save and post on your tumblr.
Tumblr media
Exercise 3 - Bezold Effect
The Bezold effect is an optical illusion, named after Wilhelm von Bezold, who discovered that a color may appear different depending on its relation to adjacent colors. He found that the entire appearance of his design would change by substituting a different color for the color that occupied a large area of the design.
Create a design (it can be very simple) in which the perceived hues used are altered by changing one dominant hue. 1. Create a design in Illustrator. 2. For your design you are going to change the dominant color. 3. You can change the color in a number of ways, by changing the hue, the value, or the intensity.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Homework
Create an image (digital and/or hands on) that accounts for your cultural or subculture associations and ethnic background, use color in the various ways that were discussed in class. Post on blog, in addition write up a one page explanation (300 words) of the use of your color and how you are thinking and using color in your image. (post on blog)
Questions to help with your 1 page explanation
Why did you choose your colors, what do they relate to, culturally, ethically, etc? Is this an apparent use of color or is this significant to only you? If your design choices are based solely on you how can you expand them to serve a larger audience?

so my schoolwork schedule goes like this: every week in astronomy I have a quiz due by Sunday. It’s the only thing in the whole class we are graded on. In math I have two homework assignments due on opposing weeks, and one has to be handwritten and scanned in. Every two weeks there is an exam, and that is 50% of my grade.
I’m not complaining, I’m just thinking to myself because I am busy and tired, and things are piling up, so it’s a good reminder how much classwork I actually have.

Happy Saturday everyone!
Online classes are hard. Sometimes they can seem harder than in-person classes because you and you alone are responsible for keeping track of due dates, tests, quizzes, and discussions. This is the thing I have struggled with the most this semester. Without having a teacher reminding me every class that there was work to be turned in, I found that many of my assignments fell off the wayside and didn’t get turned in. Over Spring Break I sat down with my syllabi, a calendar, and some pens to make a concrete study plan for the rest of my semester and spread my assignments out more easily so they weren’t crammed into every weekend. Below the cut, I’ll be talking about what I used, how I did it, and what the final product looks like!
Supplies Needed:
Calendar Pages - This could be an actual calendar, the monthly pages in your planner, printed calendar pages from online, monthly pages you’ve created in your bullet journal, or in my case, loose undated month pages I got from the Target Dollar Spot. Any of these will work, just remember that you will be writing quite a bit in these squares so make sure you have enough room. I had this problem with some of my weekends since my setup had Saturday and Sunday squished together in the same box.
Pens! - You could do this entirely in one color, but for a quick view, I like to color code my subjects. I use Stabilo Fineliners in mine, but you could use any colored pens. I used four colors on the whole calendar; pink for Spanish, green for Math, blue for Writing and purple for History. This color code is the same as the one in my bullet journal so I’m not mixing different color codes.
Highlighters - I used the Sharpie Highlighters. I adore the ones with the see-through tips. Three colors are enough for the way I did things; yellow for quizzes and tests, pink for discussions, and green for paper due dates. I wasn’t going to use highlighters originally, but I had no easy way to tell the difference between readings and actual assignments or important things like tests or quizzes.
Markers - These are a bit more optional, but I found them to be helpful for planning out when I would work on certain parts of papers. They were also helpful since for a lot of my tests there is a range of days I am able to take the test and it’s nice to see them all highlighted. I used Crayola Supertips, but you could also use Zebra Mildliners. I chose four that were similar colors to the fineliners I used to color code my classes.
Syllabi - Of course, you’ll actually need your syllabi to find your due dates and possibly other information about assignments.
Class Materials - This is really optional, but I got all my books together and downloaded all of my reading assignments and broke them down into manageable pieces and added them to my calendar as well. You don’t have to plan down this far, but I knew that if I didn’t I would push those readings off over and over until I had to sit down and read a whole chapter in one sitting (yikes! I don’t recommend!).
Tumblr media
How I actually did it:
1) First things first, I took all of my syllabi and wrote down all due dates that are discussed in the syllabus. This took up a good portion of the information written on the page. I don’t know about how a syllabus is set up at other schools, but at mine, the class schedule is often just a bare bones list of assignments that often have multiple other sub-assignments or assignments that have multiple parts. I didn’t include these in the first time around.
2) Once I had all the base assignments, I logged onto my schools portal, MyMathLab, and Vistas (the website which my Spanish homework is hosted on) and gathered all the sub-assignments and assignments with parts and I add them in, spreading them out so I don’t have a large amount of work on single days. If you look at the example below, in pink you can see on Mondays I have Leccion parts due, but if you look later in the week you see other assignments such as Contextos, Vocabulario or Fotonovela. These are the sub-assignments that are part of the Lecciones. (I realize I’m not using accents on this, but I’ve not worked out the Spanish keyboard yet).
Tumblr media
3) Once all regular assignments, sub-assignments, and due dates were added I started looking at some of the due dates, such as those for discussions I knew I would need to research beforehand or papers that would take research/time to properly write. For my discussions, I would pen in an outline day the day before the due date and a day for research the day before that. For longer papers, I took the marker with the correct color for the class and I would draw a line at the bottom of the box and write within it which part of the paper I would be working on that week, breaking down large research papers into parts.
4) After all of my assignments are taken care of, I work on readings. You could just write down what chapter are due on which days, but I went so far as to actually go through my textbooks and break down my readings into smaller, more manageable pieces. I took these smaller pieces and spread them throughout the months so I’m not reading a whole chapter in one sitting.
5) Lastly, I looked at the dates for some of my biggest tests and pulled up the study guides my professors provided. These study guides are pretty much just lists of the concepts that will be on the test. Using these I was able to break down the review for the test and schedule the parts before hand.
I know this is long and has a lot of small pieces, but I have a terribly time remembering to do my classwork so I really need everything this mapped out. It really helps because in the morning I can just glance at the calendar and see what I need to do to keep up with my studies. With the way it’s broken down, if I miss a days studies for whatever reason (probably chronic illness issues) I can easily catch up since doing two day’s work isn’t a large chunk of work. Not everyone needs to go in depth as I did, but I figured I would spell out how I did it in case you are like me and need a little help remembering all the little details.

To pass the time.
Let’s start with you: How are you?: I am feeling very under the weather. Yesterday afternoon I started to notice some post-nasal drip and by bedtime I had to chug nyquil to get to sleep because swallowing hurt me. Woke up to a tender throat, stuffy and runny nose, and a sinus headache... so things could be better, but they could also be worse.
What motivates you to get up every day?: Sunlight. If there is no sun, there is no motivation and it’s the biggest struggle to roll myself out of bed.
Do you have a true best friend?: I don’t have a “best friend” because I have a handful of best friends... whom I trust wholeheartedly. I think limiting my love to just one “best friend” would be a waste of my affections.
Do you see yourself as a sensitive person?: Yes, absolutely.
Have you been upset recently?: Nope. I’ve been really good lately.
Do you still leave/receive voicemails?: Yes... I want to make sure that people know that I have called and that its not a huge emergency but I want to touch base. I don’t call others often though...
Do you live in your hometown?: No.
Are you a festive person? Do you enjoy holidays?: I’m not super festive, I both love and loathe holidays. I’ve got complicated relationships with all of my immediate family, with the exception of my dad.
Did you/Will you attend college?: I attended Queens College and am enrolled in the University of New England presently for my masters.
How many alarm clocks do you use?: My phone.
Do you consider yourself to be an open-minded person?: Absolutely.
Do you eat fruit?: All the time.
What is your favorite subject to learn about?: Psychology, psychopathology, trauma.
How many meals a day do you typically eat?: It depends... I often forget breakfast.
Music, eh?
Have you seen any live shows?: Yes.
Name three of your favorite bands/artists…: Lizzo, Demi Lovato, The Avett Brothers.
How big of a role does music play in your life?: I am always listening to music.
Can you play any instruments?: Nope.
You’re feeling down - do you listen to sad music or happy? Both, either.
If you’ve ever been to a concert, how old were you and who did you see?: I’ve seen NoName, All Time Low (more than once), We The Kings, Hey Monday, Underoath, LIGHTS, Lake Street Dive, Xavier Rudd, Trevor Hall, Highly Suspect, Ashlee Simpson, and a handful of others.  Do you prefer music to be meaningful and deep, or purely for dancing/fun?: Either. Depends on my mood.  Is there a song or artist that you secretly enjoy, but don’t want to enjoy?: Taylor Swift. The bish makes catchy music.
If you could only listen to music from one decade, which would you choose?: 90′s. Has your parents taste in music in any way affected what you like?: Definitely. My dad has always been a downloader of music and movies, he would have a very eclectic selection and I had full access.  You’re looking for some new music - what’s your preferred way to discover?: Through the “other artists you may like” section of apple music or listening to different playlists.  Do you still own any CD’s/records/tapes?: Not on purpose.  Do you ever hear a new song on tv that you like and find it?: Yes.  Speaking of television… (look at that smooth transition!) Do you watch a lot of television? Whether that be shows, news, movies etc.: I watch a lot of netflix and hulu.  Do you watch the news?: No.  What about the weather channel?: No.  What’s your favorite holiday movie?: I’m not sure. Elf maybe.  What hooks you to a television show? Light and funny or really dark and intense.  How do you feel about adult cartoons?: They’re alright. Not my preferred genre.  Talk shows - boring or entertaining?: Can be entertaining when I’m bored out of my mind... but overall boring.  Do you prefer cable, satellite or streaming?: Streaming.  Have you come across any new shows you like this year?: The Act. Super fucked up, super intense, and super thought-provoking.  Do you still watch shows that you grew up watching?: No.  What about movies that you grew up with?: No.  Are you subscribed to any streaming services?: Hulu.  Reality shows - entertaining or horrifying?: Entertainingly horrifying. Vanderpump Rules is a must watch.  What is the first movie you ever saw in a cinema?: I don’t recall.  Let’s talk about what you don’t discuss at Sunday brunch Do you identify with any organized religion?: I would say I lean heavily toward Buddhism.  If so - is it how you were raised, or have you found your own?: I was raised without an ounce of religion discussed. I had friends who went to church but if they asked me what religion my family was I wouldn’t have known the answer. My mom grew up Jehovah's Witness and subsequently did not want to push religion on to her children in any way. My dad is super atheist and never directly discussed religion with me.  Do you think that marijuana should be legalized?: Absolutely. It’s less destructive than alcohol. It can be used for SO MANY things. Marijuana is good.  If so, would that be for medical use only, or recreational?: Both. Medical cards are expensive af and they have to be renewed every year. Pay 200+ every year for medical access (plus the cost of the weed) or just buy recreational without that 200+ yearly fee...  Pro-life or pro-choice?: Incredibly pro-choice. I do not know if I would get an abortion myself, I’ve never been in that spot, but I do know its not a single bit of my goddamn business if someone has an abortion. I am truly a supporter though, my sister had had two abortions and if she hadn’t those children would have been all sorts of fucked up because she was on all sort of drugs.  Have you ever protested or been on strike?: I have done Women’s marches and I also stood outside a planned parenthood to escort women into the clinic and shield them from the insane and really mean pro-life protesters.  Is gun control necessary or no?: That shouldn’t even be a question... do people get shot needlessly or no? Are you happy with the political state where you reside?: I am perfectly happy with Massachusetts and their political state (well, everything can improve in one way or another...). I am not, however, proud of the political state of my country. Our president is a huge baby and the people, in general, are so extremely divided and on really chaotic ends of the political spectrum right now.  Have you read the book 13 Reasons Why or watched the show?: Yes and yes.  Should shows like this be available to everyone or could it be a trigger?: I think that this isn’t an easy answer. I believe that the making it available for public consumption did a really good thing for society- shed light on suicide and all of the contributing factors as well as emphasizing how confusing and messy the lives of young people can get, regardless if we see it or not. However, it was also something that was triggering for some people and it did borderline romanticize suicide without really hitting home that if you kill yourself you don’t get to see how much others care and you don’t get to see how hard others will fight for you.  Okay, let’s simmer down. Back to happy things. Do you like animals?: Yes.  If so, do you have any pets?: Dog and cat.  What is your favorite day of the week and why?: I don’t have one really because I have a revolving schedule and classwork due regularly.  Do you have a favorite season?: Fall.  How do you enjoy nice scents? Uhh... breathing?  Do you live in a large city or small town?: Medium town.  Are you happy with that or would you like to change it?: I think it’s fine.  Do you have any children?: No human children.  Are there any colors that you think compliment you?: Orange, yellow, blue.  Do you enjoy cleaning or find it to be a chore?: I enjoy it for the most part.  What is your absolute favorite food?: Sushi.
If you were any color, what would you be?: Lavender.  Do you spend a lot of time on social networks?: No, I have cut down immensely. I deleted FB and I limit myself to 2 hours per day.

Emotional and Social Intelligence Competencies
I am confident in:
Relationship Management
My confidence in my ability to be a coach and mentor stems from my athletic experience. Athletics has allowed me to develop communication skills to address personal obstacles, uplift morale and develop plans to overcome hurdles. I recently used the core competency of coaching with my boyfriend. We had just finished bowling, and he lost both games by a decent amount. I had noticed he was tensing up and becoming aggravated during the games but knew approaching him during the activity would not be fruitful. He was depressed, complaining about how he was a failure and that I am better than him at most things. I approached his issue as a coach afterward and had him discuss why he felt that way. Once the details were given, I thought about them on our way back to the car. I told him that he could not make everything a competition and to appreciate the experience of having fun after work. Told him he needed to remember losing is part of life and does not mean we will fail at other things we attempt. We also discussed he has to experience losing at the small things so when he fails at something more substantial, he is prepared emotionally and can move on from the disappointment. The conversation was successful because his mood uplifted; he stopped focusing on the loss and was looking forward overcoming his next hurdles no matter the size.
Self Management
A core competency I have confidence in is my ability to achieve what I set my mind on. I set goals for myself regarding work, home improvements, academics, and travel. The most recent achievement I have experienced is my acceptance into Northern Kentucky University’s MBA program. On top of attending NKU online, my grades have remained decent, and I am set to graduate in the spring. This personal achievement is significant to me because I thought I lost my opportunity to go back to college. However, recent changes in my life allowed me to consider going back to college, but I was still debating the amount of time involved. I evaluated how I felt about my time management skills and how college would impact my life. Even though I knew the path would be difficult, frustrating and time-consuming, I submitted my application. I work hard to achieve my personal goals and those others set for me.
Relationship Management
Teamwork is a core competency I have practiced since I can remember. My time playing soccer is one of the main reasons I feel confident in how I contribute to a team. Church activities are another reason because I volunteered at numerous events and all the competitive games played in the youth group. A recent experience I have had with teamwork is the department I am in at work. We recently had to close our CRM for 2018, and it was all on hands on deck to clean the files from recent campaigns. I understood our goal and immersed myself in my tasks. Once mine finished, I helped my co-workers with their project instead of sitting back and waiting for everyone to finish. The department was able to close the CRM early and save money! Without teamwork, everyone would focus on their tasks and not contribute to the bigger picture when their jobs are completed.
I need to improve on:
Relationship Management
Influence is a characteristic I feel that I could build on to improve my emotional intelligence. The reasoning behind the choice is I listen and observe others without contributing my thoughts. My plan to improve my ability to influence others or achieve my desired result is voice my opinion during strategy meetings, which occur monthly. To influence at the strategy meeting, I want to discuss what is working, failing and how to improve the process in various departments. To work on influencing I will need also work on explaining myself. I have a habit of only explaining half of my thoughts. To remember to practice this competency, I will place a reminder in my calendar thirty minutes before meetings. A reminder will help me organize my notes and come prepared. I will also study terminology and vocabulary that can evoke positive reactions or help articulate what I think we can achieve. Most of all I will remind myself to breathe and not rush, my words are valuable.
Social Awareness
Another competency I can improve on is empathy. I listen to others and acknowledge issues they are facing with words but internally not caring. The lack of empathy is due to surface level relationships and me keeping others at a distance. My belief is my coworkers and friends are experiencing my false condolences. I have also come to realize that I try to one-up their stories with my own. These two qualities lack emotional intelligence, and I need to remedy my responses to grow as a leader. My goal to overcome this issue of mine is to apply it to social situations at church. There are always activities taking place, and I attend them regularly, Wednesday and Sunday service. To keep empathy at the forefront, I plant to ask three individuals about their week. If any of them talk about difficulties such as family needs or prayer requests, I will inquire about the topic. From there I will offer my help, prayer and let them know I am available anytime to talk. I will leave my issues aside and focus on my friends and co-workers.
Self Management
Recently, my emotional self-control has been tested with school, work and family events. Emotional self-controlled is defined as “the ability to manage disturbing emotions and remain effective, even in stressful situations” (“Why Emotional,” 2018). My classwork has left me stressed which has affected my work environment. I tense up every time I look at my class calendars and focus on homework assignments, rather than work, so I do not have to complete them at home. Also, family gatherings have been stressful with holidays coming up, and I instead work on homework rather than focus on having fun. Stressful situations have led me to be homework driven, closed off from others, and unaware of how my actions affect others. Examples of these actions are my temper which has a shorter fuse, words are sharper, and I am quick to respond without thinking about my words. To improve my emotional self-control, I will work on my social self-awareness and observe how I am affecting others. I will work on this competency by stopping what I am doing when something significant occurs and internally check what is going on within my body and mind. Such as the tensing of shoulders, gritting teeth and asking myself what I am feeling. After reviewing my symptoms, I will talk myself down, take a quick walk or remove myself from the situation. I would apply this to any time I receive an interruption while working, which is daily. My goal is to control how I respond to stressful situations, so my coworkers and friends are not on the receiving end of adverse reactions.

October 2018 Blurbs
10/1/18 31 Nights of Halloween, Freeforms inheritence from its previous incarnations, other than the mandated 700 Club. The month between seasons, otherwise known as candy city. Stockholm Syndrome from Willies departure may be setting in as we had a large truck and only 4 of us to do it. I shouldnt be missing his prescence but somehow i am. Remedy is needed soon. 10/2/18 Im A Christmas Guy, love giving gifts out and decorating. Have done so annually for 16 years and it always starts within the first few days of October as i unblock my Holiday themed movie and TV Shows on digital. Looking forward to the next few weeks especially. Brewers NLDS starts Thursday! 10/3/18 The old tutalige of when it rains it pours, reared its ugly head. Flat by Old El Rancho. That really screws things up for me. Hoping for Miracle. 10/4/18 Well, day minus the Brewers coming back, was a bust. Tire was flat. Hoping I can get it either possibly fixed or a cheap replacement. Wondering how ill get to the store tomorrow. 10/5/18 Apparently massive flu spreading around as Mom picked up whatever Dad was sick with. Ended up replacing tire, but with brand new one. Hopeful not mistake. Also affected things at WallyWorld as Linda and Tyler were feeling cruddy. Hopeful I dont get it. Brewers win and truck got fixed. Still undecided on Venom or Gaga for movie on Saturday. 10/6/18 Ended up going with Gaga and was pleasently stunned by both her and Bradley Cooper. Movie was wonderful and that ending was rough, picked up soundtrack to boot. Sort of took longer than I anticipated coming back from EC thanks to BlueGolds Homecoming. Boy colleges take that far more seriously than High School. Panera for dinner was a great alternative as well. 13th Doctor tomorrow before work! FLCL on the other hand...I'll never say the C word to anyone, but Pets was definetly the C Word to Kana. 10/7/18 Man that was emberassing to watch. Green Bay actually played so lousy I watched Doctor Who, and loved the female 13th looking forward to more of her. Final Season of Walking dead also premired. Wonder how Ricks going out. Gunner and his partner are really intolerable. Reporting that asap, the store is not a place for thier private spats. 10/8/18 Columbus getting squeezed out of his own day is the most PC thing that I can get on board with. Nobody gives a crap about the whole Sailed the ocean blue in 1492 thing anymore. Stuff to do including assignments that I have to go to the library to finish. Hoping internet will be back sooner rather than later. 10/9/18 Woke up to flashing lights by house and realized power line got taken down by tree that Dad had pointed out. A bit more broke than I anticipated. Stuff here i have to do anyway and thankfully work will limit my having to go anywhere. Really could use $300 to pay Patti. Brewers will take on Dodgers in NLCS starting Friday. Mad that Conan for all intent and purpose has been cancelled, adpating is one thing but this is a glorified cancellation. 10/10/18 Rain city continues...Puddles in Bravada. On top of it its getting colder. Winter isnt here yet, but the white ravens are taking flight. 10/11/18 Now comes the cold, and first snow of the year. We had it all today cold, wind, sun and snow. 10/12/18 Store gave me a first look at my future. Gaurantee work on Sunday Monday and Friday every week unless i say so. Which other than one day may be saying much. Could use more variety than that. Also stinks NLCS is on when im working. Pulling for Dodgers in at least 1 game so I can see game 5 on wednesday at least. 10/13/18 They have been hyping the crap out of inventory for the past 3 weeks. Now i see why, Clint made a rare Saturday appearance at the store. Hopeful for the next few days. Got my prediction right about game 5 on Wednesday so thats good. Kanye is nuts as usual, and Kana gave me the best reason yet to finally move forward on the FLCL finale. Cold week ahead. 10/14/18 Andrew and his little notes are getting out of hand. Got called in to do truck early as Inventory closes in on Tuesday. Clint on the other hand, i know ive got to not walk off for a few seconds but he really needs to chill for a bit especially cause we both used to be pushing carts in the first months of the store he should know my rhtyms by now. Stinks about Pete Davidson though, really hope he can recover cause i liked him and Ariana as a couple. Rather unfortunate that they split cause she couldnt deal with her ex commiting suicide. 10/15/18 A missing person is a big deal, when you happen to know someone who is related to said missing person, then you know its huge. Jayme Closs, the cousin of Brody being abducted after her parents were gunned down, sad for all. My only issue is brody reatcing to everyones sympathies, overkill a bit. The other issue i have is the amber alert system that can be sent out to phones. With Trumps ability to text everyone in the country I witnessed a bunch of people who got the alert yesterday complain about it, the others who thought she killed them and fled are the bigger morons. Hopefully shes found safe. Other than that, good night for Wisconsin Sports, Brewers are 2 Out from pennant and Rodgers did his thing once again. 10/16/18 Boring first part of shift as we did basically nothing due to the inventory. But at least the night managed to salvage itself. Dodgers really play dirty. 10/17/18 Nose began to stuff itself again. Bunch of classwork for 2 weeks as i get the inservice day. Milwaukee gave another one away. Hoping Game 6 on Friday will be a turnaround. 10/18/18 Rare thursday day, nose still stuffed. 10/19/18 Library day as i caught up on work, and finally watched A Chrsitmas Story to its ending. A classic, yes just don't feel that strongly about it. Big game from the Crew forcing Game 7. 10/20/18 This day was nuts, a quick 25 minute snowcase that gave way to sunny conditions by noon. Saw Venom, didn't get why it was hated. Quite enjoyable dyanmic and She-Venom was the highlight of it all. Dodgers unfortuantley took the pennant. Great season overall for Milwaukee just bummed my streak of picking the world series winner at the All Star game ended at 4. Also tide pods finally used them, no wonder people ate them they're great for clothes. 10/21/18 First day ever that i skipped NFL Games. Neat concept. 10/22/18 Very long strech of store coming up, especially given that Today we only had 3 total. 10/23/18 Held off on grabbing Mamma Mia 2 Blu Ray. Mainly due to gas situation that had Bravada dying near tracks. I got to figure cash situation out to pay off people. 10/24/18 Lone day off before Halloween. No class today so that made things better. Master Mode on Zelda getting easier to figure out. Did reset on iPhone and Kindle, should fix lone bugs. Really want to play RDR2 and Spiderman PS4. World Series from what I can tell is shaping up as a sweep. Also, whole reason I began watching Sunny aired tonight. First of 2 Part Super Bowl Episode. Charlie in a Bear Trap drinking pee, eww! 10/25/18 First of 6 in a row backwise. The Halloween episodes on TV Usually do wonders for me, not this time. I know this is the final season of Big Bang Theory but Sheldon not realizing how irritating he sounds to others after 12 years and so much maturing seems not the right way to do it. Especially seeing his wife irrate Bernadette. 10/26/18 2nd night, the wheels i dont think feel off, but the were more loose than usual. Hour to set up, hour work, break, 30 minutes to unload hvdc and then didn't finish til after 6. When your down numbers wise you can certainly feel it. FYI The crap with the MAGA Bomber made me mad enough to likely stay off social media until after the election, that made it my breaking point. RWBY Season Premire Tomorrow! 10/27/18 Rooster Teeth First free trial, worth it for watching a great primire that perfectly sets up what comes. My point who is that woman with the Maz Kanata eyewear? Wisconsin stinks. 10/28/18 My issue with the whole core hours thing involves me working on days i know theres something i should be doing. Such as watching the packers. Almost beating LA, hopeful they can actually do that against Brady. 10/29/18 That blue wave better close in next week cause, another shooting and another predictable Trump response occurred. Hate crimes abound in his america. 10/30/18 Last in the back, October really came and went this year. Only thing bad about not working Halloween is the dressup im missing out on. Adam in drag would have been a hoot. 10/31/18 Darkness Falls Across the Land...You Know the rest. Halloween. This day is one back 20 Years ago i would openly love. At least the Candy is still around, albiet smaller and more sugary. Nowadays this day has me DVR'ing all the major shows to see what costumes get put on. Spoiler Alert only episodes of ATH And PTI that I happily record all year. When it comes to applying for scholarships however thats where it blurrs. WITC is really biased against those in the outreach sites hoping i can get help tomorrow when i visit. November came too quickly but, I get to see my nephew in 2 Weeks!
