HEADCANON. lynn is not alone when she escapes temple gate. her mind, despite not falling prey to the morphogenic engine, is twisted and muddled, allowing an imprint, an echo, of the engine to burrow itself inside. for a time, it is quiet and only allows itself to be seen in shadows at the edge of her vision or whispers she swears she can hear in the television.

as her growing panic fuels it, it's presence grows and soon it becomes something stitched together from her memory. humanoid. familiar. but strange. even grotesque. the shadow exists as a pale outline on screens - phone, televisions, computers, tablets. until one night she walks into the living room to find it seated on her couch, staring at the television. it is closer to human now and it resembles her lost husband. the memory is so clear and for a moment she questions if it's really him. but when it turns, her heart sinks.

her "husband" does not have eyes. dark, hollowed out holes are carved into his face where eyes should be. blood, like tears, flows from the gaping holes, dripping and smearing on the couch. when it open its mouth, the sound is sharp static, a scream that has her scrambling back, her heart racing.

the next time she enters the room, her "husband" is gone. but it visits her like this. again. in the mirror. and again. at the edge of the bed. and again (laid next to her) and again (in the closet) and again (at his computer). the screams soften sometimes, even try to make out words, but she does not listen. she cups her ears and screams back, telling it to get the fuck away.

for a long time, it is like this. the screaming. the misunderstanding. and eventually it can break through the static, speak in a way that she understands. they talk. she listens. it apologizes. so does she. its sight is regained and the first thing it sees is the tears in her eyes. something stirs within it, an echo of a memory. a feeling. a devotion. love transcending death itself.

when it appears next to her in bed, she does not fear it any longer and moves closer, wrapping herself around it. holding a memory. it does not feel her, but it hopes it brings her comfort all the same. its visits are infrequent and act only as a comfort to her when her spirits dampen. it does not mind.

the question, still laced with static, hovers between them. will you let me go? at first she does not answer. she does not answer for a long time. and then she does. it's sight is gone and it feels peace. just as she does.
