If a movie was made about your life, what genre would it be and who would play you?
I don’t think any actor other than Cooper would get a chance at playing me. We don’t really look similar or anything but he’d insist he knows me best and that no-one else would hold a candle to his performance. As for genre -- probably a romantic comedy. I don’t think I’m serious enough for a drama or scary enough for horror.

hc event - Where did you grow up? Is this a place you’d go back to now? Or avoid?
I grew up in Paris, and honestly, I can’t wait to go back. People romanticise the city, and I understand why but I don’t think I’m blind to the reality of it. It’s crowded, and it’s dirty. The large majority of people smoke and your barista will judge you if you ask for milk in your americano but I love it completely. I think it’s easily one of the most beautiful cities in the world. I love the leisurely lunches, I love the pandering to tourists, I love the abundance of bakeries, I love the fashion, the art. I would return tomorrow if I could. I genuinely dream about bringing Noah home with me so I can show him exactly what it’s the greatest city on earth.

"First love is a kind of vaccination that immunizes a man from catching the disease a second time."
Mere weeks after leaving the army due to some clear cut ideological differences between himself and the forces, he found himself in Strawberry. It’s somewhere he’d been before, a stable he’d already fucked up at for reasons he couldn’t remember. They’d remember his face, he assumed, so there was no good reason to sniff around and look for honest work.
Instead, as he did prior to the army while in a pinch, he’d steal anything he thought he could easily get away with -- he had to eat somehow. Inns were generally a fine hit, as guests would leave things behind or forget to lock doors after leaving for a few hours. Plus, any noisiness could be chalked up to a mistake or just putting your own things away. This particular day, though, while rummaging through the trunk of a room he did not rent, a man walked in on him.
“Petty thief, are ya boy?” a lilting, but deep, accented voice boomed through the doorway. Kieran’s mind froze but his hand was quick, reaching for his father’s cattleman revolver and pointing it between the eyes of the man. He said nothing, and time stood still for a moment. The man didn’t reach for a weapon, and in fact, put his hands up. “C’mon lad, wouldn’t want tae knick up the place, would we?” he spoke, accent now clearly reading as Scottish, as he placed a gentle hand on the end of the revolver and pushed it downwards.
The stranger had a point, Kieran really didn’t need to be causing a stir in little towns like this. He certainly didn’t want to be dangling in the town square, nor did he actually want to physically harm anyone. So, despite his suspicion, he lowered his iron and muttered under his breath. “Yeah? So, uh... What now? Are you just... Just gonna let me walk outta here?” A large sweeping motion of the hands accompanied his words. The other man stepped out of his way but asked ‘who he worked for,’ as he moved, to which Kieran responded with the truth: Nobody at all.
As is normally the natural order among turn-of-the-century thieves, they decided to work together. The scot’s name was Blaine MacKenna, and he led a little band of young men called the Gaels, a name simply based off of his people back home. Kieran took over looking after their horses. Finally, he had found some kind of fulfillment in the chaos of living in the wilderness.
Blaine was still a fairly young man, albeit a few years Kieran’s senior. He sported a handsome face and generally kept his black hair and beard well-kempt. He was of average height and build, as well. The most unique thing about his appearance was his eyes, which were mismatched honey brown and yellowish green. It made him easily identifiable, but he had enough charisma to make up for it.
Whenever Kieran would inquire about his reasonings for immigrating or starting a gang, Blaine would spin an entirely different yarn than the last. He gleaned from the ages of the members, which ranged from approximately 15 to 25, that it was more about banding outcasts together than anything else. Blaine would never admit it, or really anything about his past for that matter. He chose instead to live in the moment, letting his thoughts of now rule over worries over before.
Kieran was in the gang for nearly five years. Never once did he ever feel like he knew anything about MacKenna that could be put into a biography, but he felt like he could trust him more than himself. He knew the scot couldn’t bite his tongue to save his life, that he would die for any one of them in a fraction of a heartbeat, how he hated alcohol but tolerated the consumption of it among members, how strange his eyes looked when the light hit them both just right and they averaged out to a matching yellow hue... Among a nearly endless list of other things, big and small.
Kieran had always been the endearingly oblivious type. It seemed wherever he went, despite his rather homely appearance and allergy to first impressions, someone was always quite charmed by him. It might have had to do with his very obvious passion for horses, it might have been the impression of submissiveness. It’s hard to say. He’d never found it easy to understand people, and when it came to romance, there was no exception. But Blaine MacKenna fancied Kieran Duffy, and he made that painfully clear.
Kieran wasn’t nearly as straightforward, but there was no question the feeling was reciprocated. They had a quiet relationship, but the volume didn’t affect the reality of it. It wasn’t always sunshine and rainbows, but it was good while it lasted. It would have lasted much longer, had it not been cut short.
Eventually, a day came when the Gaels had traveled too deeply into O’Driscoll territory. Each and every one of the 10-or-so members had been jumped and ruthlessly slaughtered, save for MacKenna and Duffy. Duffy was only spared because he came out last with his hands up, while MacKenna had been ordered to be taken alive by Colm himself. They were both taken back to Colm on horseback and given an ultimatum: work with him or face the same fate as the others.
It wasn’t the first time Colm attempted to poach members, and in fact, most of his band had been assembled that way. He had no idea what answer he’d be getting from either of them, and he didn’t care. Dead, they kept off his marks, and alive, they were of direct use to him. His dark eyes fixated on them both, patiently waiting for an answer. The silence was deafening.
As Colm opened his mouth to prod them harder, Blaine attempted to break free from his captors. His hands were quite literally tied, but he managed to knock the one holding him out cold with a headbutt. However, the effort was wasted as Colm charged him with a knife and forced it into the scot’s sternum. There was an audible crack, and he fell lifeless to the ground.
There was nothing Kieran could have done. Even if there was, he had been thoroughly convinced he wouldn’t have done anything. Fearing the same fate, Kieran agreed to join them.
#this is ~1000 words just to say he was fuckin his old gang's leader#hc;#ooc;#i am still not fucking good at writing#but you get the gist#this shit is highkey self indulgent as fuck lmfaoooo

"Maybe I just wanna save Ravenclaw the embarrassment of losing to us." Marlene shrugged her shoulders, flipping the page in the potions book to the next one. "Are you really tellin' me that we ain't gonna use this on anyone?" She eyed up her best friend, nose scrunched in displeasure.
‘‘Reckon anyone would notice if A’h poisoned the entire Ravenclaw Quidditch team?’‘ Marlene held up a vial over the cauldron at Alice, a grin on her face. It was a good plan if she said so herself, plus if the team was out for the count, then maybe James would stop making them get up so bloody early for practices for a little bit. @aliceabsolutely

Aggregating Census data about housing density.
As a follow-up to this Culture War post about density, I noticed that the traditional urban/rural divide doesn't exactly capture the difference between suburban, small-town and truly dense living arrangements--formally, "urban" means you live in a development of 2,500 or more people. Read on to see how I got the above histogram.
We have a Census; the Census divides the whole country into various-sized pieces, down to tracts, block groups, and blocks; we know how many people live in each of them, and we have... somewhere... geographic definitions for all of these, so we must be able to determine how densely people live on a much finer level, and end up with a histogram of how many people live in each density-bucket.
Getting data from the Census is... nontrivial when you want to do something "clever" like this. There are plenty of very in-depth writeups using packages like acs and tigris, or using plain ggplot2. It is... not friendly to amateurs, and I get the sense that it's not as simple as it could be. I had the idea of using ZIP code maps, but the Census doesn't use ZIP codes exactly; it uses ZIP Code Tabulation Areas.
Luckily, after poking around considerably, I found table GCT-PH1, which includes population, area, and even density (a derived quantity, of course) down to the Census tract level in some cases, the block level in some others, but only in the "100% data" file. Start here; this shows per-Census tract information for every county in the United States. Download the whole dataset, and you'll (blessedly) get a CSV file with exactly the right data in it.
Note that this will have county-level data as well as tract-level data in it. Filter out the tract-level data by checking for the GEO.id2 field being equal to the GCT_STUB.target-geo-id2 field. According to the metadata, field HC01 is the population, HC06 the total land area in square miles, and HC08 the population density per square mile of land area. Let's fire up R and see what we can do!
library(readr) census.full <- read_csv("DEC_00_SF1_GCTPH1.CY07.csv") census <- census.full[census.table$GEO.id2 != census.full$`GCT_STUB.target-geo-id2`,]
This appears to properly cover the entire US population as of 2000, divided across 65,543 tracts covering all 3.8 million square miles of the nation.
> sum(census$HC01) [1] 281421906 > sum(census$HC04) [1] 3794083
And (making sure to set na.rm to TRUE) we see that about a quarter-million Americans live in extremely rural census tracts.
> sum(census.table.short[census.table.short$HC08 < 1,]$HC01, na.rm=TRUE) [1] 269136
The full range of density goes from zero to over two hundred thousand people per square mile, which I thought was an artifact of very small tracts, but then I remembered that all tracts should contain at most several thousand people (there are a few outliers); there are simply some very small, very dense tracts.
> range(census.table.short$HC08, na.rm=TRUE) [1] 0 229783
To see a list of the most-populous tracts:
na.omit(census.table.short[census.table.short$HC08 > 150000,])
This contains fifty-four tracts, fifty-two of which are in New York City; the remaining two are in "Baltimore city - Census Tract 1003", containing the Maryland Reception Diagnostic and Classification Center (a prison), and "Marin County - Census Tract 1220", containing San Quentin Prison.
At this point, I'm considering trying to put together a cumulative distribution function of population by density, or maybe a histogram, though I'm unsure where to put the buckets. So I look up documentation for geom_histogram over here, and I find this Stackoverflow question, and it seems there's a weight aesthetic that does what I want. With a little extra tidying...
populated <- na.omit( census.table.short[census.table.short$HC01 > 0 & census.table.short$HC08 > 0,]) ggplot(populated, aes(HC08, weight=HC01)) + geom_histogram(binwidth = 0.01) + scale_y_log10() + scale_x_log10()
And with some fancy aesthetic advice...
ggplot(populated, aes(HC08, weight = HC01)) + geom_histogram(fill="black", binwidth = 0.1) + scale_y_continuous(name = "Population") + scale_x_log10("Density (persons/square mile)") + ggtitle("United States Population by Density (2000 Census)") + theme_economist() + theme(axis.text.y = element_blank())
(I wanted to try the xkcd theme, but getting the new font to work was nontrivial.) So, there it is! Possible follow-up idea: I could overlay the 1990, 2000 and 2010 data on the same chart, and see where everyone's been moving to, or try to make a cumulative-distribution view. Or bucket things more coarsely, and try to get those buckets to correspond with floor-area ratios or some other intuitive measure of density.

"You're gonnae make a killing with this, Ogden." Marlene put the bottle to her lips, dimple forming in one cheek as she gave him a lopsided smile. She enjoyed his company, she enjoyed that he was able to match her drinking pace. The only other person that tended to keep up with her was James, and well, drinking with James was different to drinking with people she wasn't basically related to. "You gonna take over the business after school?"
‘‘One of these days yae gonna hafta tell me what’s in this y’know.’‘ Marlene grinned at Tib, putting the bottle to her mouth again and taking a swig before handing it back to him. ‘’Secrets just end up driving great friends apart. And I’ll tell ye, I’m a great friend to have.’’ @tiberiusogden

Kieran is the sort of person to be extremely occupied with the here and now, not so much with yesterday or tomorrow. His traumas don’t consciously weigh on him, and he’s not the type to be constantly exercising his imagination. If he’s doing something, he’s completely invested in it, there’s no room in his mind to be mulling over the past.
If he’s asked directly though, forced to remember, he’s almost instantly transported back. The memories of watching the light leave his mother’s eyes, the shake of his father’s shriveled hands, or the bullets penetrating his friends’ skulls are extremely vivid. They’ll play in slow motion, and his body will react accordingly – most commonly with a feeling of pure fight or flight that’s often impossible to satiate… and nausea. It all passes, usually within an hour or two, but while in the state he’ll often react to interaction with deathly fear or too much aggression.
Although his flashbacks affect him heavily for a short period of time, his rebound is fast and strong. Before long, he’s back to living in the current moment. At least… until he tries to sleep.

HC04. // akira is gray-romantic. probably. although he has the occasional tendency to be a little flirty & enjoys when it’s reciprocated the moment it starts getting a little too serious, he backs off. he could have legitimate feelings for somebody but still feel reluctant to accept a confession until he’s certain the relationship won’t be emotionally one-sided ( their side ). however, when he is committed to somebody, he’s attentive & relaxed & playful again.
