★ Amaal Mallik says he is 'indebted' to Salman Khan, talks about their Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan song!
February 24, 2023
Amaal Mallik made his debut as a music composer in Bollywood with Jai Ho. The year was 2014, when he entered the world of showbiz with the Salman Khan film. Recalling his first Hindi film as a music composer, Amaal feels he didn't deliver well. However, he learnt a lesson, went through another year of hard work and delivered chartbuster songs.
After collaborating with Salman on Jai Ho, Amaal reunited with the superstar for his upcoming film, Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan. In an exclusive chat with IndiaToday.in, Mallik spoke about his upcoming track with Khan.
AMAAL MALLIK ON SALMAN'S KISI KA BHAI KISI KI JAAN SONG
Speaking exclusively with IndiaToday.in, Amaal Mallik opened up about his reunion with Salman for Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan. He also revealed an unknown fact about his track with the superstar.
"Now, eight years later, we are doing a heartfelt song together. Last we collaborated on Main Hoon Hero Tera and now we are coming together and I hope people love it. I can only say that it is a track about romance and love. It is something I made as a composition in 2012 and he remembered that tune as he had it in his recording. He remembers songs and has them on his phone. He said, 'I am doing this song and you have to start working on it.' That's what we are doing right now," said Amaal.
He added, "As we speak, tomorrow, we have recordings for it. The melody is something that I made in 2012 and the whole arrangement, production and beats I am doing now. So my 2023 ka mind is going to work on 2012 ka brain. It is a nostalgic feeling. He had like 4 to 5 songs, out of which Hero was released. He also liked this song. Today, I am doing it for his film. I hope all listeners, Amaalians and Salman Khan fans are ready for a song that is about falling in love and being in love. It is another love song by me, but this time it is with Salman Khan."
'I OWE MY BEGINNING TO MR SALMAN KHAN'
Going down memory lane, Amaal recalled how he got his big break in Bollywood with Jai Ho. He expressed gratitude to Salman and said, "I owe my beginnings to Mr Salman Khan and sir is someone who believed in me that I could be a composer at 23. And I remember, during Jai Ho, I was asked what credit would go. So I said you can give the credit as music produced or beats by Amaal Mallik. He looked at me and said, what kind of credit is that? Music composer banna hain ya nahi banna hai? He was like, otherwise, don't give me the song. I was thrown into this industry like that. Of course, struggles are there. It was not easy to reach him. That is another chapter of life. But once he liked it, he gave me such a big platform to debut on. He took Armaan (Malik) as a vocalist and Salman Khan's voice was Armaan's voice when he was 19. He took a big risk for both of us. And I personally felt I didn't understand much about what to do. I was young and didn't deliver well in Jai Ho. Later, when I did a song with him, Main Hoon Hero Tera, which created history, by then I understood what his fans also like about him and what kind of music they like. In the first film, you don't know, whatever you have been guided about - you try your best."
Before signing off, the music composer stated, "He loved EDM music. That's why we did songs likeTumko Toh Aana Hi Tha, Love You Till The End and the Jai Ho title track in the film. There were EDM-driven club anthem kind-of productions. But his audience is very massy and commercial. They love to see him in either beautiful songs like Teri Meri Prem Kahani (from Bodyguard) or Character Dheela and Dhinka Chika. So, these two spaces are something fans love about him. Even though Salman sir listens to different kinds of music, he is aware and he knows what works for him, but he also knows what works for his fans and they will love it. That surety which he has helps a music composer know what to do. By then I understood where I went wrong with Jai Ho. I am glad that my first film, in spite of it being the biggest launch, I didn't deliver well on music. It taught me a lesson and made me go through another year of hard work so that I could do something like Main Hoon Hero Tera and Sooraj Dooba to take my career forward. I am indebted to him for believing in 23-year-old Amaal Malik, who thought he would debut as a composer at 32 or 33. It was his belief that I became this."

The recent episode of the Karan Johar hosted show featured Sharmila Tagore and Saif Ali Khan debuting on the couch where they discussed their personal and professional life, during which the mother-son duo opened up about Khan’s divorce. Saif revealed that his mother was the first one he spoke to when he was considering this separation. “With the separation, I just like to say, that the first person I spoke to before the separation was my mother. She took a deep breath, there was a pause on the phone, and said, ‘I am with you if that’s what you want’ and that helped a lot,” said Saif.
Sharmila Tagore went on to speak about how the entire divorce and separation affected her and her cricketer-husband Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi aka Tiger. “When you are together for such a long time and you have such lovely children, then no break up is easy. Then it is not a harmonious… I know it is difficult to have harmony at that stage, everybody is hurt… so that stage was not nice but I tried. But that’s water under the bridge, she needed time to cool down and they worked it out together.”
She added, “It’s not just staying away, there are so many other things that are involved. It wasn’t a happy time for us because Ibrahim was just three and we were very fond of the children. Especially, Tiger was really fond of Ibrahim and he would say, ‘That’s a good lad.’ He didn’t get that time with him. So we felt doubly deprived to lose Amrita and lose the two kids. So it’s just not him but we also had to adjust to all that,”
Currently, Saif Ali Khan not only spends time with Sara Ali Khan and Ibrahim Ali Khan, but the duo are also share a great rapport with Saif’s second wife Kareena Kapoor Khan and their kids, Taimur Ali Khan and Jeh.

Rest In Peace ~ Sushant Singh Rajput
Hey guys, I was going into a spiral thinking about SSR and everything he went through and I needed somewhere to write my feelings down. There’s so much noise about this on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, I didn’t want to add to the noise, bashing and overall negativity, so found this to be the best place. I’m sorry in advance if I offend anyone. This is going to be very long.
Tumblr media
Sushant Singh Rajput the Actor and Human:
I’m not going to lie, I wasn’t his biggest fan, not by a long shot. I watched him in Pavitra Rishta every now and then because my mum was obsessed with that show and I used to be confused as to why everyone was obsessed with Manav and Archana - I was 12 years old when the show started and just felt it was another saas-bahu serial. However, to this day it amazes me how Manav and Archana were able to capture their audience for three consecutive years when their story was another saas-bahu serial. It was obviously the actors portraying them, and it takes a lot to grab someone’s attention and keep it on yourself. SSR had that energy. I remember then he came onto Jhalak Dikhlaa Jaa, I watched that show quite religiously because of my love for dance, and was bowled over by how good of a dancer he was. He had perfect lines, and his posture was amazing, I was in awe every time he danced. I remember that in that show he proposed to his then-gf in the cutest way possible, a proposal that is etched into my mind till this day.
He then left his daily soap, for a career in Bollywood, it was a very risky, bold move because it is a well known fact - Tellywood actors, are rarely able to make good careers in Bollywood. Most of them become irrelevant after their first or second movie. But man was everyone wrong about Sushant. I didn’t watch Kai Po Che, but I remember the buzz around it at the time, everyone was talking about it, and it was one of the biggest movies of that year. He then did Shuddh Desi Romance - a movie I was inclined to watch because he was in it, I was slowly turning into a fan, but I didn’t get the chance to watch it. Then came PK. When PK’s trailer was launched, SSR’s cameo was kept a secret, I remember I was in the theatre and he came onto the screen and absolutely owned it. His performance as Sarfaraz won me over, and a smile still comes to my face when I remember him in the song “chaar kadam”. SSR had an amazing screen presence, he knew how to keep the audience’s attention on himself and a lot of the time you would forget this Sushant Singh Rajput, in fact you would only think of him as his character. The brilliance in his craft was the ability to become his characters completely, to the point you think of them as a real person. The next movie I watched of his was MS Dhoni - a movie that became a sensation. Everyone who went to the movie as Dhoni fans, came back as Sushant’s fan. He deserved that and more. You could see his hardwork, his passion and his dedication in everything he did. I remember when the trailer for Raabta dropped, I was super excited two of my favourite actors - Sushant and Kriti had come together. At that point I started watching more interviews of him and got to know him a little from what he portrayed as a person. Raabta flopped at the box office, however, personally I enjoyed it and I was amazed at the chemistry he had with Kriti Sanon. In Kedarnath, I was so excited that Sara Ali Khan was doing her debut with him, and man both did not disappoint. Kedarnath was an amazing movie and Sushant portrayed his character with utmost conviction. Chichore was the last movie I watched of his and I absolutely loved the movie and him in it. The themes and overall message of that movie hit deep, and it was intelligently made, with comedy mixed with the darker themes, but not taking away from the main message they were trying to convey. Overall, even though I wasn’t a fan of him at the start of his career, he had won me over.
I also started adoring him as a person. His love for physics and astronomy; his eyes full of curiosity and enthusiasm towards the great unknowns. He didn’t finish his engineering degree, but the childlike wonder he had towards science made me excited as a scientist myself. He showed everyone that he had a brilliant mind and I’ve said this before and I’ll said it again, actors who are educated and well-spoken make me respect them more, they have a different way of thinking, they are eloquent and they show how much education can do for a person. SSR had all of these qualities. I could hear him speak for hours at a time. His instagram posts were always so deep and meaningful, it would make me thing differently, and his 50 things bucket list inspired me to no end. Especially how much he wanted to do for other people and how much he wanted to grow as a person. He also had an infectious smile, his smile used to make his fans smile and it takes a big person to do that.
SSR’s Death:
I was doing an assignment when one of my friend’s had sent me the news. I thought it was a hoax at first, but then I googled him, and it was true - Sushant Singh Rajput had committed suicide. Honestly, I’ve been distraught since then, I cried multiple times, and I can’t stop thinking about him, the pain he must’ve felt in order to take this decision, and whenever I saw his sisters or dad I cried even more, the sadness and despair I felt would be nothing compared to theirs, especially because his death was preventable. I’ve never been depressed, I’ve had my fair share of panic attacks and anxiety but I don’t know what depression is. I only know what I’ve studied, that people who are depressed have physiologically different brains to people who are not, they have decreased levels of oxytocin and serotonin, and that they have less grey matter. I’ve also been told that this causes them to not be able to function, they sleep too much, become unable to socialise, and their brain starts to turn them against themselves. However, I believe that there is always an underlying cause of depression. There are triggers for depression, a person doesn’t become depressed over nothing. I know everyone wants to know the trigger; why did he take such a drastic step, but he didn’t leave a note. He left with silence. I know it is difficult, but I feel that we should respect that, however, we should not let him die in vain.
But I’m going to be real here IT IS NOT OUR PLACE AS THE GENERAL PUBLIC/AUDIENCE OR FANS TO GO ONTO OTHER CELEBRITIES TWITTERS/FB/IG AND CALL THEM MURDERERS. How dare we think that we can blame other people for someone’s death. I don’t care how these people treated him while he was alive, let them mourn him in peace. His death has taught me one thing, not one person is toxic, not one industry is toxic, all of us are. The person who is now checking up on every single person that they usually would not care for because of guilt, the girl shouting all over my timeline that Karan Johar, Deepika Padukone and Alia Bhatt murdered SSR, the boy screaming that x person didn’t post about his death they wouldn’t be affected by this or they don’t care. Every single person. Everyone needs to stop with raging on social media. They need to take a step back and breathe, and mourn and let others mourn.
My take on Nepotism and Bollywood:
Here’s the crux of the issue. Bollywood. I’m your average desi girl, I’ve grown up watching bollywood, being obsessed with it. To the point that at a certain time I only watched Bollywood. Then the whole nepotism scandal hit. I remember thinking to myself then, what’s the big deal? Also did people really not think about this until an actress had to come speak about it on national television? Did no one realise that Bollywood has been preferring starkids over other talents for decades? I used to think that yeah, Bollywood has nepotism, but where does nepotism not exist. The truth is nepotism exists everywhere. A doctor’s child becomes a doctor. A business man’s child becomes a businessman etc. But here’s the thing, the doctor’s child has to work towards becoming a doctor, he/she has to go through the same steps that other non-doctor children have to do. The only advantage they get is, that their parents might be able to help prepare them for what’s coming, and it’s not like every doctor has doctor parents, both people get equal opportunity. The child of a doctor just has more insight. However, in Bollywood, there is no equal ground, it isn’t as if a starkid only has it easy to get their first movie. Nope, they sign their second or third movie before their first one releases. Take Sara Ali Khan for example, she had already signed Simmba, before Kedarnath had released. Now take Anushka Sharma, she didn’t get her second movie two years after the release of her first one. Nepotism does exist, it will exist, but in other industries, the people who aren’t a product of it are still able to get promoted, to do good work and receive equal opportunity. However, in Bollywood this is not the case. It has never been the case. This needs to change. This needs to desperately change. Especially because nepotism didn’t use to be as bad, as the products of nepotism were still talented, but now, they are not, and SSR’s death can bring this change, because Bollywood is losing it’s credibility, and as I consider Bollywood my own, my home, I want it to do better. Actors who come from non-film backgrounds and television deserve to share space in mainstream cinema with those who do come from film backgrounds.
Where From Here
In the past couple of years, we’ve become a horrible society. We pretend to like people when we meet them, and then bitch about them behind their back. We also think that whatever comes to our heads we can say to whatever celebrity the way we want because them being public figures is an open invitation for us to say hurtful things to them which normally we would not say if we meet them in person. We are the people who cry about nepotism, and then when a movie doesn’t have a big star in it we go “we’ll watch it at home, if we have time, why waste money going to the cinema”. We are the same people who cry about mental health issues and to raise awareness, when we think its absolutely fine to give a celebrity death threats because of a comment they made. We are also those people who cry about how SSR was treated unfairly, when we had a chance to go see his movies but didn’t. Who gave us this authority to be able to judge? Who gave us the right? If we won’t talk to other people with such disrespect in real life, why can we over the internet? WE. NEED. TO. DO. BETTER. AS. A. SOCIETY.
We need to stop shaming people, we need to support artists that aren’t star kids, but also support star kids. They don’t deserve the hate they get either. It isn’t completely their fault that they are given more opportunity. It’s our fault too. We are the ones who make them successful. Directors know that they could sell more tickets with Ranbir Kapoor on the poster than Sushant Singh Rajput, even if Sushant Singh Rajput is a better artist. We need to support both talents. We need to show filmmakers as an audience, that both artists should be given equal opportunity. That the only thing nepotism should do for a starkid is just give them insight on what a life of an actor is like. That is all. They should also go to auditions, they should also be accepted or rejected based on talent. And for the love of god, we need to stop getting celebrities to judge other celebrities based on acting skills and sex appeal. it’s 2020, we can do better.
Also to anyone who’s having any sort of dark thoughts. Please, I beg of you talk to someone. There is someone who loves you; your parents, siblings, teachers, friends, family, that brown guy in your dms. And if you truly don’t know anyone that you can talk to, talk to a therapist on a free hotline. My inbox is also always open if you want to chat.
To Sushant Singh Rajput - I will miss seeing you at the movies, your smile and your interviews, and how much of an inspiration you were to me. I hope you are at peace now, and finally found happiness.
For anyone who read this - thank you for reading my absolute ramble and I hope I made sense
Here’s a dumb joke to make you hopefully smile a little, or at least roll your eyes: What do you call bacteria found in Agra? Agraculture - does this even make sense. IDK. All I want to say is, that I’ve been an absolute dukhi aatma for the past couple of days, and now its time to smile, and look at some positives.

My Favorite Books...
1. Harper Lee "To kill a Mockingbird"
The story of a small sleepy town in the South of America told by a little girl. The story of her brother Jim, dill's friend and her father - the honest principled lawyer Atticus Finch one of the last and best representatives of the old "southern aristocracy". The story of the trial of a black guy accused of rape a white girl. But first of all it is the story of a turning era when xenophobia, racism, intolerance and bigotry inherent in the American South are warming to the past. The "wind of change" has just begun to blow over America. What will it bring?
- This is probably one of my favorite books. The book captured from the very first pages and did not let go for a long time after reading. You can say a lot of things but better read it.
2. Khaled Hosseini "The Kite Runner"
A heartfelt story of friendship and fidelity, betrayal and redemption, penetrating to the very core. Delicate, ironic and sentimental in a good way, Khaled Hosseini's novel resembles a painting that can be looked at endlessly set in pre-war Kabul in the 1970s. In this magical city shimmering with all shades of gold and azure two weather boys Amir and Hasan live. One belonged to the local aristocracy the other to a despised minority. One's father was handsome and important the other was lame and pathetic. Master and servant, prince and beggar, handsome and crippled. But there were no people in the world closer than these two boys. Soon the Kabul idyll will be replaced by formidable storms. And the boys, like two kites, will be picked up by this storm and scattered in different directions. Each has its own destiny its own tragedy but they like in childhood are tied by the strongest bonds. You run after the kite and the wind as you run after your destiny, trying to catch it. But she will catch you.
- Psychological novel on the theme of "crime and punishment". Deeply elaborated images, convincing children's characters, a remarkably built plot - everything speaks of a great master. For me it is "heavy" literature but it has the right to be because it calls things by their proper names. And most importantly there is light in the stories of Hosseini! The light of true human feelings.
3. F. Scott Fitzgerald "The Great Gatsby"
A jubilant, sparkling thirst for life, a desire for love, alluring and elusive, exciting pursuit of wealth - but now the dream breaks to the sound of jazz and the eternal holiday turns into a tragedy. "The Great Gatsby" is a novel about "how illusions are wasted which make the world so colorful that  having experienced this magic, a person becomes indifferent to the concept of true and false." F. S. Fitzgerald
- I read it and was not at all disappointed! Elegant presentation with high meaning - everything in this life is done for the sake of love. And no amount of money can replace the woman you love... And even if she is stupid, frivolous and idly living her life. I have great respect for Gatsby and contempt for Daisy. There are a lot of wonderful quotes, phrases in the book, it's worth thinking about. I didn’t expect to literally fall in love with this piece! In the future I will definitely re-read it more than once!
4. Daniel Keyes "Flowers for Algernon"
Forty years ago it was considered a fantasy. Forty years ago it read like fantasy. Exploring and expanding the boundaries of the genre eagerly absorbing all sorts of newest trends trying on a common human face bravely ignoring the Cain's stamp of the "genre ghetto". Now it is perceived as one of the most humane works of modern times as a novel of piercing psychological power, as a filigree development of the theme of love and responsibility. It is not for nothing that Keyes called his book of memoirs published in the 1990s "Algernon, Charlie and Me."
- The book is an emotion that will not make you think about something particularly difficult. All the thoughts that it generates are very simple and understandable. Without revelations, of course, but not bad either. The assessment will, rather, depend on the degree of personal sensitivity because the author often uses the concept of "naive hero-evil reality-collision-squeezing out sympathy" during the work.
5. Agatha Christie  "Murder on the Orient Express"
The great detective Hercule Poirot who was in Istanbul returns to England on the famous "Orient Express" in which it seems, representatives of all possible nationalities travel with him. One of the passengers an unpleasant American named Ratchett offers Poirot to become his bodyguard since he believes that he could be killed. The famous Belgian brushes off this absurd request. And the next day the American is found dead in his compartment with the doors closed and the window open. Poirot immediately takes up the investigation - and finds out that the compartment is full of all sorts of evidence pointing... to almost all the passengers of the Orient Express. In addition the train gets stuck in snow drifts in a deserted place. Poirot needs to find the killer before the express can continue on its way...
- I liked the book. Pretty easy to read. The plot is "confused" from the very beginning but Mr. Poirot is yet  a world-famous detective. It is better to read about all the twists and turns of the investigation on your own, "immersion" is guaranteed.
6. Stieg Larsson "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo"
Forty years of the mystery of the disappearance of a young relative haunts the aging industrial tycoon and now he makes the last attempt in his life - entrusts his search to journalist Mikael Blomkvist. He takes on a hopeless business more in order to distract himself from his own troubles but soon realizes: the problem is even more complicated than it seems at first glance.
What is the connection between a long-standing incident on the territory with the use of mobile devices which happened in different years in different parts of Sweden? What does the quotation from the Third Book of Moses have to do with it? And who, after all, attempted on the life of Michael himself when he came too close to the solution?
- The whole trilogy left a deep impression. Such books appear very rarely. Out-of-the-box characters, amazing Sweden, dark atmosphere. I advise absolutely everyone!
7. Ray Bradbury "Fahrenheit 451"
Perhaps the best of Bradbury's writings. The story "Fahrenheit 451" depicts a dystopian society of the future but in fact - "our reality, reduced to absurdity." Bradbury invented a state where reading and keeping books is prohibited. For the sake of political correctness and general peace of mind the general level of spiritual and intellectual demands of citizens is artificially lowered. But there are rebels and fugitives.
This is one of Bradbury's rare sci-fi works. Very exciting touching and at the same time very lively and dynamic. With a relatively simple plot, it is full of allusions including biblical texts and complex symbolism.
- This is just a great book! I advise everyone to read it! Despite the fact that the author wrote it in 1953 this does not feel at all. A very interesting and poignant plot for our time.
8. Victor Hugo "Les Miserables"
All the works of the great French poet, novelist and playwright Victor Marie Hugo (1802-1885) are covered with a halo of romanticism. The idea of life-giving love, mercy, the triumph of good over evil - this is the core of his novel "Les Miserables". Among the "outcasts" are Jean Valjean sentenced to 20 years for stealing bread for his starving family and the little dirty Cosette who turned into a charming girl and a child of the Parisian streets of Gavroche...
- Brilliant work! So thoughtful, so overwhelming and so humane. The inimitable Hugo put all his philanthropy into this magnificent novel!
9. Stephen King "The Green Mile"
Stephen King invites readers to the eerie world of the death row where they leave in order not to return, opens the door of the last refuge of those who have transgressed not only human but also God's law. There is no more deadly place on this side of the electric chair! Nothing you've read before beats Stephen King's most audacious horror experience - a story that begins on Death Road and goes deep into the deepest secrets of the human soul...
- I have been familiar with the work of S. King for a long time and have read more than a dozen of his books. The work "The Green Mile" is a story that will not let you go for a long time. She leaves a residue in her soul - mixed feelings and indescribable impressions from the story itself, unique and ingenious.
10. Gregory David Roberts "Shantaram"
This art-refracted confession of a man who managed to get out of the abyss and survive, has sold four million copies around the world and has earned rave comparisons with the works of the best writers of the modern era from Melville to Hemingway. Like the author the hero of this novel has been hiding from the law for many years. Deprived of parental rights after a divorce from his wife, he became addicted to drugs, committed a number of robberies and was sentenced by an Australian court to nineteen years in prison. Having escaped from a maximum security prison in his second year, he reached Bombay where he was a counterfeiter and smuggler, traded arms and participated in the showdown of the Indian mafia and also found his true love, to lose it again, to find it again...
- It is very difficult to somehow categorically evaluate this novel. There are many advantages here: a fascinating story of the wanderings of the protagonist in the world of a harsh exotic country. Together with him, the reader develops, absorbs the alien culture and energy of other people, people of another world to which we are not used to. However there is something ridiculous about this.  At times it seems that we are watching real Indian cinema - the brainchild of Bollywood naive and merciless. In general I liked the novel, it is interesting, bright, impetuous. During the period of reading this great story, I have never been bored. Despite some controversial points - I advise!

They spend a lot of time together, and Marinette falls more in love with Adrien as they do. After a night hanging out together, he asks her how she’s always happy. “Everyone deserves to be happy! If you are not then, you should ask for it. At least some of it.” she tells him. The next day, she sneaks into his room to meet him, and hopefully tell him her true feelings this time.
“You don’t get it! I am not happy with this!” she hears him shout. She goes into an empty room beside his and peeks through a secret window. He is talking to another model: Lila Rossi. “What are you not happy about?” she asks him. “Us. I am not happy being married to you and keeping it a secret.” he says. Marinette is shocked. He never wore a ring to indicate that he was married. but then again, it was meant to be a secret. “No! If we tell anyone, then my career will be over! No one will let me model for them!” She says. “I will convince them! They will listen to me.” he argues. This goes on for a few minutes, and Lila seemingly agrees.
Marinette is obviously heartbroken (cue jag soona soona lage) and a few days later decides to meet Adrien to return a snow globe he had gifted her when they met that night. Lila and Adrien go to a place where they model a lot and she blindfolds him. Marinette sees how happy they are and leaves from there, not wanting to disturb them. She decides to mail the snow globe to him later. Meanwhile, Adrien is still blindfolded. He doesn’t get a chance to ask Lila what she’s doing before his pushed onto the floor. He opens his eyes to see Lila with an angry look on her face. “Lila! What are you doing?” he asks frantically. “Oh you see Adrien, this is the place where I was going to launch my own fashion line. But you insisted that we tell the world about our marriage, and you see, that doesn’t go with my plans. But don’t worry, I will still launch it, except you won’t be there to witness it.” she says menacingly. “What do you mean?”  Lila takes out a lighter. “If you are alive, you will tell everyone about us. So you need to die. Sorry Adrien, but I will have to sacrifice you to make my career.” she sneers and drops the lighter on the floor. The place catches fire and Lila walks out, ignoring Adrien’s pleas. Marinette hears his shouts from outside just as Lila drives away, and runs to his help. Lila sends guards to ensure no one saves Adrien. They shoot Marinette fatally and leave her to die, but she survives it and manages go in. There is a whole sequence where they try to reach each other, but a gaslight suddenly bursts and Adrien gets lost. Marinette is blasted out of the hall and lands in front of a car. The car belongs to Tom Dupain, upcoming entrepreneur and baker, who is taking his pregnant wife, Sabine Cheng to the hospital to give birth. He puts an unconscious Marinette in the back and takes her also to the hospital.
At the hospital, the doctors try their best to save Marinette but fail. At the same time Sabine gives birth to a healthy baby girl, who they name Marinette Dupain-Cheng.
Thats part 1 of this AU. Om Shanti Om is a long movie, so I will write and post part 2 soon! Till then, enjoy!

As the title suggests this is my movie rec list. These are the films across industries and  stuff i feel needs more recognition and love. It is all a mixed Bag, Mixed Genres, Mixed reasons to suggest them right from the quality to acting to cinematography to story etc.. to critical acclaim Etc you get the picture. Now not all of them are like Blockbusters or like wah wah highly acclaimed though majority are but still i feel more people need to see them so do give a try. I love these films and i am proud of them so here it goes in no particular order.
p.s These are more recent films say last 2,3 yrs and the list doesn’t include films that are still in theatre like Uyaare, super deluxe, athrian, lucifer  etc
Template is as follows the Titles include links with subs. Now they are msotly links for well known streaming giants so should not be an issue with majority but i will try to find and add alternate links too. Also will be adding lil synopsis detail of film and then in italics what i thought of it and why one should watch it just random thoughts kind of thing. we will see how far this will go because i have 30 titles approx to add LOL so i will have to break this post in parts and i might get lazy and forget to add my thoughts. we will see LOL
So Let’s Begin :)))
Part 1:( will break it in 10′s caz otherwise it is too much to post in one post )
Vikram Vedha |Tam | *R.Madhavan,Vijay Sethupathi:   Police officer Vikram is on the hunt to capture Vedha, a gangster. But when Vedha voluntarily surrenders himself, it challenges Vikram's perception of good and evil. [you should watch this one for it’s smart writing, superb characterization and wonderful performances, the intrigue factor keeps you hooked till the end and Not a trace of Maddy and Vijay in the Cgaracters of vikram and vedha they are truly those characters., Also i heard this one is in the process of getting remade in bollywood so watch it before it is ruined forever. IYKWIM... i will leave it at that because this isn’t the post for details on remake hehe
Geetha Govindham|Tel| *Vijay Devrakonda, Rashmika Mandanna: (the drive link will not open in the app from phones, use a PC):  A 25-year-old virgin searches for love. Super cute rom com and a feel good film. Music is really nice and basically a laugh riot or well i laughed a lot lol.
Vada Chennai |Tam| *Dhanush,  Andrea Jeremiah,Aishwariya Rajesh |alt link |  A proficient carrom player sets foot in the world of crime and joins forces with local gangsters to settle their feuds. However, he decides to take them down when they plan to wipe out his locality. A perfect beginning to the triology,Truly enthralling, Truly an epic Gangster drama, it is built layer by layer and sucks you into the world of anbu and company right away. Dhanush is in his best form and andrea in her grey character is also surprsingly good. this gangster drama i actually loved like anything and this genre is really not something i enjoy mostly it has to be really good for me to enjoy it
Njan Prakashan |Mal| *Fahadh Faasil,Sreenivasan |alt link|  Prakashan aka PR Akash is a typical Malayali man who aspires to lead a luxurious life without too much effort. As he tries to achieve this aim, a few insignificant figures walks into his life.
holds up a mirror to Society, simple, cynical, skeptical, thoroughly entertaining and teh one that makes you smile, also Fahadh plays the role of the guy we love to hate and then love so perfectly. but hey that is hardly a surprise i mean when is he not Excellent?.
Sairat| Marathi|* Rinku Rajguru, akash Thosar: {on netflix as well} Upper class Archie falls in love with a lower caste son of a fisherman, Parshya. Watch this one for it’s realistic approach and rawness. this one deals with a wide range of themes right from class system to the struggles of a young couple when they try to settle into a daily life to more dark themes such as honor killings but an epic film. it is so hard to explain in words how good it is and why one must watch this one. Just the honesty the passion of filmmaker shines + the music. one big thing about this film was how normal looking everyone  was they had realistic locations average looking cast but MAN THIS one makes you smile, laugh, cry, be sad, feel the pain like anything .the usp is the innocence of leads and the love story is so endearing Unfortunately this is also the original of dhadhak which isn’t even a speck of dust in terms of quality and basically rips everything that made sairat what it is from it and is a glossy totally non practical remake and devoid of any emotions + with terrible casting Loll.  Also this is my only Marathi entry on this list.
Ente Ummante Peru |Mal| Tovino thomas,Urvashi:| Alt link  The life and journey of Hameed to find his biological mother and how his life changes when Aisha comes into his life. Just Heartwarming would be my comment on it. this is again something one has to watch and experience to know why this one made it to the list. it is hilarious at times yet has some very tender moments. Tovino is a sweetheart as hameed and aisha amma is Lovesuper lovable and warm. this one just kinda engulfs you into it’s warmth.
Majili |tel| *naga chaitanya, Samantha:  A former cricket player nursing his wounds of a failed relationship takes up the task of training his ex-lover's daughter and in the process discovers his feelings towards his wife and her unrequited love for him. I personally didn’t care for the first love story as it is very typical and clice But it is post the entry of sam where the film becomes worth making it to this list , simple and the one that makes you count your blessings and just be thankful to have someone who loves and supports you like sravani does for purna..  Chay and Sam’s chemistry is off he hook and they make it worth it totally.
Arjun reddy| tel| shalini, VIjay devrakonda : alt link   Arjun Reddy (Vijay Deverakonda) is a Surgeon and the topper of the college. He falls in love with his junior, a Tulu girl (Shalini), who is four years younger to him. Due to some unfortunate incidents, they break up. How life takes them forward forms the rest of the story. A gamechanger in Telugu industry no wonder it has reached the cult status. it’s not like i haven’t been raving about it from past 3 days even more than before because the butchering in form of the remake hurts But wow What a revelation Mr Derakonda was in this and He rightfully won a Best actor award. Just Like sairat this one rises way above the script due to the acting of vijay and that honesty in the script and film making. idk it is hard to put in words for me but when you see these films you see how passionate the makers were while making them and the heart and soul they have put in the film just shows and touches you so hard. Now this one is 18+ so TW drugs, alcoholism and a lot on innuendos and banging hehe. BUT and i can’t emphasize enough IT IS WORTH EXPERIENCING IF YOU ARE A FILM LOVER. This is the one which leaves you in the undecided category or well it had left me in that do i love it? do i hate it? i was so confused until my rewatch and i have finally came to conclusion that i love it. this is like you can love me hate me but you can’t ignore me and it stays on your mind a lot longer then the 3 hrs runtime after you are done because you are in that wait what is my actual verdict hehe. Also i haven;t seen a more accurate depiction of a toxic relationship on desi screen where one is so obsessed and self centered that it becomes really hard to survive around him
Thadam|tam| Arun vijay    The murder of a youngster creates confusion among a few cops when they find out that the one accused in the crime has a look-alike!.  Thadam has an intriguingly written flow of events that begin from the pre-interval point and the film maintains the suspense factor till the end. The lead actor is fab in his dual role it is hard to tell which one is which and who has actually done the crime but mind you int he beginning it is a little confusing as it keeps goign back and forth between the bg stories of 2 guys but the viewer isn’t told that it is actually dual role so i was like wait how come one min he is rich and in love with oen persona and next he is in slums doing thefts lol. anyway...
Peranbu\Tam/Mal |*Mamooty  A story about a father who tries to understand the struggles of his disabled daughter Paapa. The plot highlights the journey of how he becomes a better man while he comes to terms with his child and her special needs. This one is Just purely about a father’s love for the child and how far a father can go for his child.
An Honorable mention to BAAHUBALI2 which requires no intro or anything from me to persuade one into watching it It is SELF EXPLANATORY.
Phew OK i am calling it a day..... Part 2 will be posted soon... I am more then excited to  hear from you guys and your thoughts on these films plz do tag me if you post your reviews and your thoughts. i worked really hard on this so i will be more than excited to know if it was worth or no... I have so much more quality content in the queue and am super excited to share that with ya fellas..... it gives me great Joy to share the love for movies and a lot of satisfaction that all this FIlm nerd thing is coming to some use to others and i take a lot of pride in the fact that i am kind of is a film nerd hehe. Happy Viewing,,,,,,,

Anil Kapoor's love story is very interesting
Anil Kapoor's love story is very interesting
Just like in Bollywood, the stars are full of love stories. Not only on the silver screen, But Bollywood celebrities are also equally romantic in their personal lives. But despite all this, the love story of actor Anil Kapoor is very interesting.
He was a struggling actor in the 1980s. Used to go for auditions every day. At the same time, she was seen with just a glimpse of a girl. Anil Kapoor lost heart in that one glimpse. When Kin started collecting information about that girl, it was revealed that she is a successful model. To reach it far they will have to struggle to see that model again.
But Anil could not stop himself. He told the heart of some of his friends who were very close to that girl. Anil wanted his friends to introduce the girl. But friends could not do it. Yes, friends did an act that gave the girl's telephone number to Anil from somewhere. What was it then, as seen in many films, He is seen wooing his girlfriends on the phone, he did the same in his personal life? She started a phone conversation with that model.
Gulshan Grover, who was among Kapoor's strangest friends in those days, says that He had lost everything on the phone. But the dilemma is that he was not thinking to meet the girl, why? Because in reality, they did not have enough money to take a girl on a date. Girlfriend herself raised expenses While talking on the phone, then successful model Sunita Bambani herself proposed to meet Anil Kapoor one day. What should Anil do now? During a reality show by UTV Star, Kapoor himself told, 'Sunita asked, how long will you reach. I said in two hours. Why, why two hours? I had already said that if May arrives in the bus, it will take so much time. They said why are you coming, I told them clearly I have that much money. After this, she gave a very shocking answer. Gulshan Grover says that after hearing this, girls and boys usually left. But she said Anil, 'You cab, I will give them money here.' Anil was heartened to hear this.
However, after this, many times when Anil had to take money from Sunita. Then in return, he used to show Sunita by acting, as he himself said. But as a result of all this, Kapoor's hunger to earn money increased further. He wanted to make a successful actor as quickly as possible so that he could stand against her and propose marriage in front of her.
Boney Kapoor says that Kapoor's hunger to earn money had grown so much in those days that he had come to clean up his chest hair to audition Ramesh Sippy-GP Sippy. Friends advised not to get married Kapoor was working very hard to make a place in films. Gradually, Anil had started getting films on the right. The 1984 film 'Mashal' gave him the status that he was waiting for.
With this film, Anil reached the level from where he could propose marriage to Sunita. Then what, they did the same, told Sunita heartily and asked for marriage. Sunita asked for a little time to think. Anil felt that he may have hurried now that only one film has run and it is generally believed that the real Bollywood career of the man begins with his second film. But Anil was surprised on the day Sunita called and talked to accept his offer.
Then the wedding ladders started bursting in Anil's mind. He also confirmed a date for the wedding. But this time people from the film industry in front. Friends of the industry said that if Anil had just married, his career would end. This thing increased so much that finally, Anil had to stop his marriage with a stone on his heart. But his mind was not agreeing. Bonnie says that he used to constantly explain to family and friends that marriage would not affect them. On the other hand, she also started feeling insecure when Anil asked to pursue her again after keeping her marriage date again. When did Anil Kapoor marry again? Kapoor himself states that his family had never objected to his marriage, but Anil's Bollywood friends had objections. But after postponing the wedding date twice, she also made it clear that it will no longer go on. Then after thinking coolly, he decided, on May 19, 1984, Anil and Sunita became a couple. Sunita was already engaged in grooming him. he says that if he had not been Sunita, he would not have been at this place today. Sunita introduced it right after marriage. After marriage, Sunita accepted Anil's career as her career. He quit modeling and took over the house and gave him an open sky to think about his career instead of getting into futile thinking. She went from designing a dress for Kapoor to shooting abroad with him. Even Kapoor's name was paired with Madhuri Dixit several times during her film career, but Sunita always avoided it as a rumor. Today both are living a very successful married life. Their three children, Sonam Kapoor, Riya Kapoor, Harshvardhan Kapoor are in the field of acting. Anil himself is equally proactive.

OVERVIEW
Monal Arora’s parents let her travel to Mumbai to be trained in classical dance, and that makes all the difference. Monal gains fame in the arts community and even in Bollywood -- she frequently starred as a guest act in films. It’s a scandal when she falls pregnant with no man in the picture but, it eventually passes. She’s still charming and loving and her daughter is far too sweet for it to last.
Delilah has never known anything about her father aside from the fact that he chose her name and that while her intuition in her classical dance classes come from her mother, her voice is her father’s. Her mother still calls her Laila at home -- she suspects that they must have loved each other deeply from the way her mother’s eyes teared up late at night when she thought no one was watching. She wants her mother to be happy, and so she stops asking about her father.
Growing up as the darling of the Bollywood world is...odd. Her mother sends her to the international schools where English is the norm and when the time comes, picks Italian for her foreign language. Upon completion of secondary school, she is sent off to London where she studies Politics & International Relations. Even Bollywood families made sure their children had back up plans. Still, Delilah is part of a cover-band all through uni and travels all across Europe in her breaks, attending every kind of concert.
She takes a semester abroad in Italy in her final year. She meets a man with dark eyes that draw her in and unravel her. It’s a whirlwind affair that results in an elopement some months later. Her mother is furious. The fight is bad, and they both say things they regret. But when the marriage comes crashing down, Delilah flees back to India and weeps into her mother’s salwar kameez. Monal chin tilts up with something like pride when Delilah explains she won’t have to file paperwork to change her name back. She’d never taken her husband’s name in the first place.
With her mother’s contacts, she begins singing for Bollywood film soundtracks, gaining recognition after her cover of an old Bollywood song. She likes the work enough but it doesn’t ignite a passion in her -- a part of her hesitates to indulge in her own emotions after her failed wedding but she misses that heady rush and thrill of simply being. She doesn’t like the structure of the Bollywood music industry, but she doesn’t trust herself to do anything else.
The Capulets find her in Glasgow. She’s visiting for a university friend’s wedding and the bachelorette party is at a glitzy karaoke bar. She sings freely, enjoying herself and at the end of the night is approached by a member of the Capulets with a business card. Her mother is supportive of the move, the way her parents had supported her, and the world seems at her fingertips.
Delilah Arora (though she only goes by Delilah for business purposes) is an up-and-coming pop singer and is often compared to Lorde and Florence Welch. Her voice is surprisingly powerful; more familiar ears are able to pick up the Ghazal influences (though Europeans find it similar to the Portuguese Fado style). Her first album, COMMUOVERE (a story that moves one to tears in English) was released recently to modest financial success and critical acclaim. Her feature track, Anarkali, garners special attention -- the ballad of a dancer’s tragic love story entrances every listener.
CONNECTIONS
THE CONTACT (Lucrezia Falco) -- Lucrezia has a keen eye; there’s a reason she’s a headhunter. Delilah also trusts Lu more than anyone else in the industry. She’s the reason for Delilah’s big break and so she’s become a dear friend. And someone she can talk to at big parties, as an additional bonus.
THE MANAGER (Everett Craven) -- Everett is smart and she knows it. But sweet and kind gives guarantees. Her mother used it to gracefully handle what could have been a career-ruining scandal and Delilah has made enough mistakes that she’s positive it’s the right move. Sure, everyone likes to watch a good girl go bad, but she needs to establish herself as a good girl first.
THE INVESTIGATOR (open) -- Delilah’s past is rife with juicy secrets from her ex-husband to her mysterious father. Maybe Delilah asked you to look into her father, or maybe you just can’t stand how nice she is and want to see her facade break. Either way, the truth will make its way out and she will have to confront it.
THE TRUTH TELLER (Regina Daly) -- Delilah was delighted to be asked to be a part of Regina’s latest documentary. The topic of authenticity makes her hesitate but she’s been playing the part of the darling for so long she’s sure she can manage keeping it up. She hasn’t realized just how insightful and perceptive the other woman is and the interviews will definitely bring forth questions.
THE GUIDE (Nikolai Borisov) -- Delilah is somewhat unfamiliar with the ins and outs of the European entertainment industry and Nikolai may be more fallen angel than guide, sauntering about casually, but he was a friendly face who knew everyone. Following him is always an adventure; a guilty pleasure Delilah can’t help but allow.
THE FLIRTATION (Orion Massetti) -- Orion is sweet and sad in a way that draws Delilah like a moth. Around him, her persona feels real and around him, she feels as though indulging in her impulses isn’t the great crime she’s made it out to be. She still stutters when he flirts but she smiles too.
THE STAR (Tiberius Capulet) -- Delilah wasn’t really into rap so when their management teams suggested working together, she was not convinced it would go well. However, she can’t say no to the opportunity, recognizing it merits. She’d forgotten that music has its own language and to those who understood it, anything was possible. Even a collab.
THE CRITIC (Odin Bello) -- Hooking up with him wasn’t something Delilah regretted, but it was definitely a mistake. Odin had been helpful at first -- he’d understood her vision for Anarkali in a way no other producer had and for that, she would always be thankful. But he’s been cold, somewhat rude and mean, quite frankly, ever since she refused to date him. From her biggest fan to her biggest critic...Odin and Delilah could only ever be tragic.

Rajpal Yadav opens up about his financial issues and who helped him during tough times
Famous comedian Rajpal Yadav experienced a financial crisis a few years back and recalling it the actor says that the entire world stood by him at that time. Rajpal was also jailed for not repaying his loan of Rs. 5 crore in the year 2018.
He was recently in an interview where the actor said that if it was not for his friends, fans and supporters, he won’t be able to stand where he does today. In the interview, Rajpal also recalled his days of struggle and said that he used to walk from one place to another in Mumbai as he did not had money to handle the cost of public transport.
The interviewer asked Rajpal if he got support from the Bollywood industry during his bad times, the actor said, "I feel everyone should keep their doors open for others... How would I be here if people didn't help me out? The whole world was with me, I had my beliefs to keep me going, and I knew that I had all the support I needed."
Recalling his days of struggle he said, "When you land up in Mumbai, an unfamiliar new city, where you share an auto with others to get to Borivali... Then, when you don't have money for an auto, you walk to Juhu, Lokhandwala, Adarsh Nagar, Goregaon, sometimes even Bandra, carrying your photo with you, looking for some success, then what are you talking about? If life seems tough, the mission is easy. If life seems easy, the mission becomes tough."
Rajpal also offered some clarification on his loan case in 2018. “There are three things. Either somebody invested ₹5 crore or somebody loaned this much money. The third thing is that Rajpal Yadav was involved in a fraud. Only one of these three things can be right. Please let me know which of these I am getting punished for."

NPR: How A Shocking Attack Inspired India's Actresses To Fight Harassment

Every day seems to bring a new high profile case of sexual harassment in American media. It began with accusations against Harvey Weinstein. This week NPR's senior vice president of news was forced to resign over allegations against him.
But this problem is hardly limited to the U.S. For the past several months one of India's major film industries has been made to face up to similar problems in its own ranks after the sexual assault of a prominent actress. In reaction, women movie stars, directors and other film professionals have formed an unprecedented coalition to fight back.
They call themselves the Women in Cinema Collective, and the group includes some of the biggest names in "Mollywood." That's the nickname for the industry that produces movies in the 35-million-strong South Indian state of Kerala in the local language of Malayalam — and which is not to be confused with "Bollywood," the better known nationwide Hindi-language film industry based in the city of Mumbai.
Launched in May, the WCC has been lobbying both the industry and political leaders for a host of reforms — ranging from setting up an official complaints system through which women could report harassment and get justice to the stipulation that production companies must provide such long-denied basics as toilets appropriate for women on set.
Perhaps no one is more surprised at their newfound activism than the women themselves.
"None of us thought we could all stand up and ask for the same thing," says Rima Kallingal, a prominent movie actress. "None of us thought of it."
That all changed on an evening last February, when a Mollywood actress got into a chauffeured car hired by the company producing a film she was working on. According to a judge's summary of allegations made by the state prosecutor, suddenly another vehicle rammed the car from behind. A gang of men jumped out of that vehicle and forced their way into the actress's car. Over the next couple hours they drove around with her as their prisoner, taking photographs and video as they sexually assaulted her.
"I can't even imagine the psychological pressure she went through when she was in that car," recalls Kallingal, who is a close friend of the actress. (As a matter of policy, NPR does not name individuals who are the alleged victims of sexual assaults unless they choose to be identified).
Kallingal believes that, whatever their aim, the assailants assumed the actress would be too traumatized or ashamed at the prospect of the photographs being made public to report the crime.
"That's where she proved everybody wrong," says Kallingal. That same night, after the actress was set free, she contacted the police.
"I still remember going to meet her the very next day," says Kallingal. "How she stood like a rock and was so clear that she was going to come down on every person who was involved in this."
Within days police had arrested several men, including one whom the actress had recognized during the attack as someone who had driven her car during a previous film shoot, according to the judge's summary of the prosecutor's allegations. (An attorney for the man told NPR his client will be pleading not guilty in the case and was not involved in the attack.)
Kallingal says that in India survivors of a sexual assault are often either blamed or pitied as somehow irreparably soiled. So the actress's defiance was a watershed moment.
"She changed the whole narrative with that single act of bravery."
She also inspired her female colleagues to start a conversation they'd never had before. At first they were simply phoning each other out of shock — and to discuss ways they could lend the actress their public support. But the fact that the attack had taken place on a work trip, and, allegedly at the hands of someone who had been employed in the film industry, soon prompted deeper conversations about how safe any of them could feel in an industry that is loosely organized and requires them to show up at all manner of odd hours to remote locations where all but a handful of their colleagues are men.
The more the woman talked, the more they confided in one another about instances of sexual abuse and even assault they had faced on the job.
"It was like we opened a can of worms," says Parvathy Thiruvothu, another top actress. "It was really shocking for everyone once we got together, about 20 of us, that we have been either assaulted or faced the casting couch in the industry over years and we've never spoken about it even with each other. We were all made to believe that it was just us, just that one incident, [that] it doesn't happen to everybody."
The stories they shared ran the gamut: Women getting slapped for expressing creative differences on set. Male actors and directors making lewd comments on set or sending suggestive texts late at night. Directors and male stars or even male crew members insisting that a woman, including not just actresses but support staff such as hair stylists, sleep with them over the weeks that a film was being shot — and docking a woman's pay or getting her blacklisted if she refused. For some women, refusal wasn't even an option.
"I was assaulted," says Thiruvothu. On one of her movies, a powerful man in the industry "would expect me to be in his room to discuss scenes and be physical with me. I was really young at the time, and for him to say 'It's okay, you know, it's very normal' and for me to try to escape — and I didn't. I was forced to be intimate."
What's more, she says, in conversations she's now had with other Mollywood women, they've told her this same man assaulted them as well — and that he's one of a few men who appear to be repeat offenders. "These men are still reigning in this industry as powerful people," she says. "We have our Weinsteins here."
But when it comes to naming them publicly, that's where the parallel with Hollywood ends. Whereas Weinstein's accusers have been greeted with virtually universal support from both their colleagues in Hollywood and the wider public, Mollywood women say they worry the reception would be very different if they were to take on major figures.
"We would be plucked out. We would be hushed down," says Thiruvothu.
And not just because of the blaming and shaming that anyone reporting sexual assault in India may face. In India, being in the movie business in particular can open a woman to accusations of having loose morals, says Bina Paul, a veteran film editor: "It's considered rather taboo to enter cinema." So much so that the first hurdle a woman often faces to joining the industry is her family's disapproval.
Thiruvothu agrees. "Even now as an actor, the way I get comments on social media is that, 'Hey, you sleep around. You're not even a pure woman, you're just a whore."
So when cases do come to light, says Paul, "it's always twisted [as] she was willing to, or she wanted to get ahead in her career."
As for the film industry itself, Mollywood's treatment of the actress who was attacked in February hasn't inspired confidence among the women of the WCC. In July police charged one of the industry's most famous actors with hiring the gang that carried out the attack. According to the judge's summary, the prosecution alleges that the actor, Gopalakrishan Padmanabhan Pillai, who goes by the stage name Dileep, bore a grudge against the actress for precipitating the breakup of his marriage by conveying information about him to his then-wife, with whom the actress was close friends.
An attorney for Dileep says he was not involved in any way. And to the dismay of the women in the WCC, some of the most prominent men in Mollywood have started speaking out in Dileep's defense.
Kallingal, the actress who is close friends with the survivor of the February assault, does not dispute these men's right to maintain Dileep's innocence until he is proven guilty. But she says that by neglecting to simultaneously express concern for the actress they have been essentially conveying that "they stand with him and not with her." Worse, she says, "there are people who are questioning [the actress's] morality, her integrity, her character even."
Thiruvothu and others say this climate explains why few women in India's other film industries — including Bollywood — have come forward through the #metoo campaign that has proven so galvanizing in Hollywood.
"I have friends in every single Indian film industry," says Thiruvothu. "This is not just an issue of [Mollywood]."
How to change the culture of silence? The women of the WCC say they concluded that the first step was to band together.
"We thought our individual voices were not strong enough," says Kallingal. "So we should voice our opinion strongly together, in one voice."
Among their key demands is the establishment of a complaints committee with the power to investigate charges of sexual harassment and other forms of discrimination and to punish the perpetrators with sanctions ranging from reprimands to dismissal — even to legal charges, if warranted.
Indian law actually already requires companies of a certain size to institute such systems. But because the film industry functions more informally — with crews coming together for film shoots for several weeks, then disbanding — the assumption has been that the law does not apply. Now the WCC is consulting legal experts to assess if that's really true, and, even if so, what legal steps would be needed to set up a complaints adjudication system for their industry.
In May members of the WCC also met with the chief minister of the state of Kerala, who agreed to their request to appoint a commission that is now studying the question.
But while addressing harassment is a top priority, the WCC also wants to find ways to remedy a host of other forms of gender discrimination that its members say contribute to making their industry inhospitable to women: unequal pay; a lack of maternity benefits; failure by management to provide bathroom facilities for women on set; contracts that permit movie producers to substitute a nude body double without an actress's consent; and just a general culture of not treating women's contributions seriously.
"In every way they belittle you," says Kallingal.
They're also exploring ways to bring more young women into the industry — state-sponsored scholarships to study at film schools, for instance, or state laws that would incentivise companies to hire more women. And not just as actresses or hair stylists. Right now says Paul, "You don't have women gaffers. You don't have women technical staff. We're so outnumbered. You go on to a film set and there are three women and 80 men."
In addition the WCC is encouraging the industry's professional associations to start training workshops on appropriate workplace behavior. For instance, says Thiruvothu, the men who comment on a woman's body on set, "they really do feel that it is normal to do that and that it's actually a compliment."
But she says it's not just the men who need educating: "The women have been taught to giggle and allow it. We all are part of the problem. We all think it's okay."
Indeed the women say their conversations have made them realize how much they had internalized the view that they should minimize inappropriate behavior by men for the sake of keeping the peace.
Thiruvothu recalls how from childhood, whenever she was pinched or groped — like the time when she was 17 and a man at a shopping mall grazed his hands over her breasts and then just walked past — adults told her it was best not to make a scene.
"That's how society has trained us — to take it all in and implode," she says. "I think we've imploded enough. It's coming out now."
Freelance writer Chhavi Sachdev contributed reporting to this story.
