Rest In Peace ~ Sushant Singh Rajput

Hey guys, I was going into a spiral thinking about SSR and everything he went through and I needed somewhere to write my feelings down. There’s so much noise about this on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, I didn’t want to add to the noise, bashing and overall negativity, so found this to be the best place. I’m sorry in advance if I offend anyone. This is going to be very long. 

Sushant Singh Rajput the Actor and Human:

I’m not going to lie, I wasn’t his biggest fan, not by a long shot. I watched him in Pavitra Rishta every now and then because my mum was obsessed with that show and I used to be confused as to why everyone was obsessed with Manav and Archana - I was 12 years old when the show started and just felt it was another saas-bahu serial. However, to this day it amazes me how Manav and Archana were able to capture their audience for three consecutive years when their story was another saas-bahu serial. It was obviously the actors portraying them, and it takes a lot to grab someone’s attention and keep it on yourself. SSR had that energy. I remember then he came onto Jhalak Dikhlaa Jaa, I watched that show quite religiously because of my love for dance, and was bowled over by how good of a dancer he was. He had perfect lines, and his posture was amazing, I was in awe every time he danced. I remember that in that show he proposed to his then-gf in the cutest way possible, a proposal that is etched into my mind till this day. 

He then left his daily soap, for a career in Bollywood, it was a very risky, bold move because it is a well known fact - Tellywood actors, are rarely able to make good careers in Bollywood. Most of them become irrelevant after their first or second movie. But man was everyone wrong about Sushant. I didn’t watch Kai Po Che, but I remember the buzz around it at the time, everyone was talking about it, and it was one of the biggest movies of that year. He then did Shuddh Desi Romance - a movie I was inclined to watch because he was in it, I was slowly turning into a fan, but I didn’t get the chance to watch it. Then came PK. When PK’s trailer was launched, SSR’s cameo was kept a secret, I remember I was in the theatre and he came onto the screen and absolutely owned it. His performance as Sarfaraz won me over, and a smile still comes to my face when I remember him in the song “chaar kadam”. SSR had an amazing screen presence, he knew how to keep the audience’s attention on himself and a lot of the time you would forget this Sushant Singh Rajput, in fact you would only think of him as his character. The brilliance in his craft was the ability to become his characters completely, to the point you think of them as a real person. The next movie I watched of his was MS Dhoni - a movie that became a sensation. Everyone who went to the movie as Dhoni fans, came back as Sushant’s fan. He deserved that and more. You could see his hardwork, his passion and his dedication in everything he did. I remember when the trailer for Raabta dropped, I was super excited two of my favourite actors - Sushant and Kriti had come together. At that point I started watching more interviews of him and got to know him a little from what he portrayed as a person. Raabta flopped at the box office, however, personally I enjoyed it and I was amazed at the chemistry he had with Kriti Sanon. In Kedarnath, I was so excited that Sara Ali Khan was doing her debut with him, and man both did not disappoint. Kedarnath was an amazing movie and Sushant portrayed his character with utmost conviction. Chichore was the last movie I watched of his and I absolutely loved the movie and him in it. The themes and overall message of that movie hit deep, and it was intelligently made, with comedy mixed with the darker themes, but not taking away from the main message they were trying to convey. Overall, even though I wasn’t a fan of him at the start of his career, he had won me over. 

I also started adoring him as a person. His love for physics and astronomy; his eyes full of curiosity and enthusiasm towards the great unknowns. He didn’t finish his engineering degree, but the childlike wonder he had towards science made me excited as a scientist myself. He showed everyone that he had a brilliant mind and I’ve said this before and I’ll said it again, actors who are educated and well-spoken make me respect them more, they have a different way of thinking, they are eloquent and they show how much education can do for a person. SSR had all of these qualities. I could hear him speak for hours at a time. His instagram posts were always so deep and meaningful, it would make me thing differently, and his 50 things bucket list inspired me to no end. Especially how much he wanted to do for other people and how much he wanted to grow as a person. He also had an infectious smile, his smile used to make his fans smile and it takes a big person to do that. 

SSR’s Death: 

I was doing an assignment when one of my friend’s had sent me the news. I thought it was a hoax at first, but then I googled him, and it was true - Sushant Singh Rajput had committed suicide. Honestly, I’ve been distraught since then, I cried multiple times, and I can’t stop thinking about him, the pain he must’ve felt in order to take this decision, and whenever I saw his sisters or dad I cried even more, the sadness and despair I felt would be nothing compared to theirs, especially because his death was preventable. I’ve never been depressed, I’ve had my fair share of panic attacks and anxiety but I don’t know what depression is. I only know what I’ve studied, that people who are depressed have physiologically different brains to people who are not, they have decreased levels of oxytocin and serotonin, and that they have less grey matter. I’ve also been told that this causes them to not be able to function, they sleep too much, become unable to socialise, and their brain starts to turn them against themselves. However, I believe that there is always an underlying cause of depression. There are triggers for depression, a person doesn’t become depressed over nothing. I know everyone wants to know the trigger; why did he take such a drastic step, but he didn’t leave a note. He left with silence. I know it is difficult, but I feel that we should respect that, however, we should not let him die in vain. 

But I’m going to be real here IT IS NOT OUR PLACE AS THE GENERAL PUBLIC/AUDIENCE OR FANS TO GO ONTO OTHER CELEBRITIES TWITTERS/FB/IG AND CALL THEM MURDERERS. How dare we think that we can blame other people for someone’s death. I don’t care how these people treated him while he was alive, let them mourn him in peace. His death has taught me one thing, not one person is toxic, not one industry is toxic, all of us are. The person who is now checking up on every single person that they usually would not care for because of guilt, the girl shouting all over my timeline that Karan Johar, Deepika Padukone and Alia Bhatt murdered SSR, the boy screaming that x person didn’t post about his death they wouldn’t be affected by this or they don’t care. Every single person. Everyone needs to stop with raging on social media. They need to take a step back and breathe, and mourn and let others mourn. 

My take on Nepotism and Bollywood: 

Here’s the crux of the issue. Bollywood. I’m your average desi girl, I’ve grown up watching bollywood, being obsessed with it. To the point that at a certain time I only watched Bollywood. Then the whole nepotism scandal hit. I remember thinking to myself then, what’s the big deal? Also did people really not think about this until an actress had to come speak about it on national television? Did no one realise that Bollywood has been preferring starkids over other talents for decades? I used to think that yeah, Bollywood has nepotism, but where does nepotism not exist. The truth is nepotism exists everywhere. A doctor’s child becomes a doctor. A business man’s child becomes a businessman etc. But here’s the thing, the doctor’s child has to work towards becoming a doctor, he/she has to go through the same steps that other non-doctor children have to do. The only advantage they get is, that their parents might be able to help prepare them for what’s coming, and it’s not like every doctor has doctor parents, both people get equal opportunity. The child of a doctor just has more insight. However, in Bollywood, there is no equal ground, it isn’t as if a starkid only has it easy to get their first movie. Nope, they sign their second or third movie before their first one releases. Take Sara Ali Khan for example, she had already signed Simmba, before Kedarnath had released. Now take Anushka Sharma, she didn’t get her second movie two years after the release of her first one. Nepotism does exist, it will exist, but in other industries, the people who aren’t a product of it are still able to get promoted, to do good work and receive equal opportunity. However, in Bollywood this is not the case. It has never been the case. This needs to change. This needs to desperately change. Especially because nepotism didn’t use to be as bad, as the products of nepotism were still talented, but now, they are not, and SSR’s death can bring this change, because Bollywood is losing it’s credibility, and as I consider Bollywood my own, my home, I want it to do better. Actors who come from non-film backgrounds and television deserve to share space in mainstream cinema with those who do come from film backgrounds. 

Where From Here

In the past couple of years, we’ve become a horrible society. We pretend to like people when we meet them, and then bitch about them behind their back. We also think that whatever comes to our heads we can say to whatever celebrity the way we want because them being public figures is an open invitation for us to say hurtful things to them which normally we would not say if we meet them in person. We are the people who cry about nepotism, and then when a movie doesn’t have a big star in it we go “we’ll watch it at home, if we have time, why waste money going to the cinema”. We are the same people who cry about mental health issues and to raise awareness, when we think its absolutely fine to give a celebrity death threats because of a comment they made. We are also those people who cry about how SSR was treated unfairly, when we had a chance to go see his movies but didn’t. Who gave us this authority to be able to judge? Who gave us the right? If we won’t talk to other people with such disrespect in real life, why can we over the internet? WE. NEED. TO. DO. BETTER. AS. A. SOCIETY. 

We need to stop shaming people, we need to support artists that aren’t star kids, but also support star kids. They don’t deserve the hate they get either. It isn’t completely their fault that they are given more opportunity. It’s our fault too. We are the ones who make them successful. Directors know that they could sell more tickets with Ranbir Kapoor on the poster than Sushant Singh Rajput, even if Sushant Singh Rajput is a better artist. We need to support both talents. We need to show filmmakers as an audience, that both artists should be given equal opportunity. That the only thing nepotism should do for a starkid is just give them insight on what a life of an actor is like. That is all. They should also go to auditions, they should also be accepted or rejected based on talent. And for the love of god, we need to stop getting celebrities to judge other celebrities based on acting skills and sex appeal. it’s 2020, we can do better. 

Also to anyone who’s having any sort of dark thoughts. Please, I beg of you talk to someone. There is someone who loves you; your parents, siblings, teachers, friends, family, that brown guy in your dms. And if you truly don’t know anyone that you can talk to, talk to a therapist on a free hotline. My inbox is also always open if you want to chat. 

To Sushant Singh Rajput - I will miss seeing you at the movies, your smile and your interviews, and how much of an inspiration you were to me. I hope you are at peace now, and finally found happiness.

Meghana

August 28th, 2020; 1:30pm

Manama, Bahrain.

Meghana was bored. Physics was a confusing subject as it is, and her teacher was not making it any better. To top all of this off, she needed to ace this class to keep taking her honours classes. So yeah, she was grumpy. The only thing keeping her going was that the weekend was nearing. 

Her phone was vibrating wildly and she took a look at the conversation happening in the group. It seemed like the spontaneous road trip plan was still under heavy discussion. She smiled for a second, but faltered when she realised that the possibility of her going to this trip was little to none.

‘Don’t get you hopes high,’ She thought to herself, heaving a heavy sigh as she thought over on how she could ask her parents, and more importantly; how they’d react to it. She was so immersed in her thoughts that she completely missed out on the last lesson for the week.

"Thank you, children, and have a happy weekend!" Her teacher ended the meeting. 

Meghana closed the laptop and started grumbling under her breath, getting started on one of the 10 worksheets she had due this week. 

"Happy weekend, my ass. You gave us so much homework, I'd die by the time I'm done with it," She muttered under her breath and caught up with the conversation in the group chat. The road trip was still under heavy discussion. She unlocked her phone and read the texts. 

'Fuck! I did not think this through,' Meghana started panicking. There was absolutely NO way her parents would let her go at this time of the year. Only someone like the Prime Minister of India inviting her could only persuade them.

Meghana tossed her phone aside and made her way to the dining hall.

"Oh you're here; your dad's coming in a few minutes, so just wait here. we have something to tell you," Her mother went back to the kitchen to get some cutlery. Meghana made a face and sat in her seat. 

'ugh, its going to be another party right,' She tilted her head back and groaned loudly. 

Her parents had a very concerning track record of attending stupid parties, the kind of ones where people invite each other to:

a) boast about their new promotion

b) boast about their children's grades or achievements.

Meghana had no doubt it was the latter, and almost cried. The parties in question were extremely uncomfortable and downright annoying. And that wasn't even the worst part. These 'parties', if she could call it, are hosted at the end of every week.

EVERY. FUCKING. WEEK.

And the only person she had for company-- also the only one who wasn't a snob-- was her brother's best friend, Mark Woo.

"How many times have I told you not to groan and stretch in front of food?" She jumped as her father put his briefcase down and sat at the dining table.

"Yeah, yeah," She dismissed him and served herself some food. Throughout the entirety of lunch, Meghana was thinking over the topics her parents could use to brag this time. Is it going to be her exam grades, or is it the results of the IMUN she participated in?

"Ok so," Meghana's dad suddenly put his spoon down- "Your mom and I have something to tell you," Your brother looked up from his food at the serious tone your father was using.

"I have something to ask you as well," Meghana swallowed her food and took a big gulp of water.

"Go ahead, we're listening."

"So a couple of my friends were planning a road trip to Europe," She looked up to see their reactions and continued, "Basically, we land in Germany and then drive from there," Again, no reaction. "And I was wondering if I could go...?" Meghana looked at them with a hopeful glance.

"A road trip sounds cool," Her elder brother finally spoke.

"It does, but I'm going to need more details. For starters, is there going to be an adult there? If so, I want to speak to them, and the supplies, money, and obviously accommodation, all of that. After then we can come to a decision," Her father concluded.

Meghana was elated. This may not sound like much, but at least her father had given this trip a chance. And that made all the difference.

"Well coming back to what your dad and I wanted to tell you; we're going to India for a few months," Her mother stated, finishing up her meal.

"Yes, we have some business there; some bank-related stuff and all." Her father stood up to put his plate back in the sink.

"Wait," Meghana sat up again, "So we're not going to the weekend party?"

"Of course not, don't be silly. The Mehra's never host a party on the last Saturday of the month, did you not get the memo in the group?" Bold of them to assume she read the messages in that stupid group.

"Now we are sure your brother will manage--" You rolled your eyes 'of course he will' "Your trip proposal, however, I have to think about. In the meantime, you will ask one of the adults to speak with me."

"Yes dad," Meghana dragged herself back to her room and texted the 'adults' in the group and requested them to talk with her father.

Meghana plugged her phone in the charger and spent the rest of her day finishing up her homework. It was exhausting to have to finish more than 10 assignments in one day, but she knew she had to do it. 'For the grades' she thought, filing her work after it was completed. She then sat for a while in complete silence, before slapping herself a few times and getting back to her writing.

"You do know dad will question them like they are wanted criminals before he makes a decision, right?" Her brother barged in her room and flopped on her bed.

"I am aware. Could you kindly show yourself out?"

"Wow, there's no need to be so nice to me today." He joked, pulling her hair and leaning down to see what progress she made.

"Did I ever mention you suck at maths?"

"Yes. Please get out. I need to finish this and submit it today."

"Let's make a deal. I'll help you with your assignments and you give me ladies advice." He brought one of his palms to shake. Meghana looked at him warily.

"Why? And who is this lady?" She gasped in realisation at his silence. "It's Priya, isn't it? What do you plan on doing, huh?" She punched him hardly.

"OuCH NOthiNG LADY. Oof; I just want to take her out sometime," She stared at him as he rubbed his arm.

"I don't trust you," She narrowed her eyes at him.

"I give you full rights to assassinate me if I do anything inappropriate."

"..."

"Please?" He pouted. Meghana wrinkled her nose in disgust. "I'm your brother, you have to trust me..., at least a little."

"Look, its not that I don't trust you or anything, but I just don't want her to get her hopes up and be hurt later," Meghana's brother looked downcast.

Guilt was eating Meghana up and eventually reached the part of her brain where she made all her rational decisions. "How do I know whether you're telling the truth or not?"

"What, you want me to write up a contract that I should sign on to swear my secrecy?" That actually seemed like a pretty good idea.

"Yes. I want you to sign a document in which you swear not to misuse any information I might give you." Her brother thought she was joking.

"You know what? I will. I will write that document if it means that I can potentially ask Priya out." To Meghana's surprise, her brother actually wrote a fairly decent document that he later signed on.

"Now are you satisfied?" He asked her, after calling her a sadist, (which she never responded to).

"Ugh, fine. But only because you deadass wrote a contract." Her brother laughed annoyingly. "Will you still help me with maths?" She asked shamelessly, running a hand through her hair.

"Yeah, wouldn't want mom and dad to be embarrassed at those stupid end of the week parties,"

Her brother just shook his head and sat down to help her with her assignments; and soon enough she was almost done! She did have her huge democratic politics paper to write, but she chose to help her brother with ladies advice instead.

"So I shouldn't make sex jokes?"

"I'm not saying that," Meghana's brother frowned in confusion.

"Then what are you implying, woman?"

"I just asked you to keep it respectful. I didn't ask you to stop; even the principal knows Priya likes your weird sex jokes," For the first time in her 16 years of living, Meghana saw her brother blush.

"I never make disrespectful jokes. I make small penis jokes, yes; but nothing more than that,"

"I'm sorry. I just assumed college boys were like, you know,,,"

"Yeah," He began, frowning again at the assumption, "But I really want Priya to like me you know?" He flopped back on her bed, acting like a lovesick puppy.

"I can see that. I think this is the first time I saw you blush that much when I mentioned a girl's name," She laughed, clearly amused. "And that is why I have decided to support your relationship, even though I am extremely suspicious of you." She nodded her head determinedly.

Meghana's brother laughed. "Ok you idiot,"

She still had the determined look on her face, "Tell me what you want to know."

True to their words, the siblings helped each other out; although not pleasant, but the effort is what counts, right?

"I think someone sent you a message, your phone is almost ready to become a Bollywood dancer," Her brother unplugged her phone from the charger and handed it to her. "I'll be in my room if you need anything."

"Believe me, I won't." Meghana scoffed jokingly, taking her her phone from her brother's hands.

"Rude," he scoffed and left her room, only to poke his head back in. "Best of luck my dude. Dad's gonna murder you if you don't let him talk to those 'adults' soon. Here's to hoping I don't become an only child." Her brother saluted her mockingly. She flipped him off and read the texts she's received, hoping with all her might that they'd agree to talk to her dad.

She quickly responded to her friend and opened the texts she'd received from Kavya.

'Oh thank god!' Relieved that Kavya had responded, Meghana quickly ran to the hall and called Kayva's number.

"Hello, Meghana? This you?"

"Yeah, thank you so much for calling"

"No worries, is your father there?" Meghana said yes and handed her phone to her father, exiting the hall as he made shooing motions towards her.

"Tensed?" Her brother annoyingly asked her again.

"Don't even get me started. I was so tensed, I didn't even read the new chapters of my Sukka fan fiction!" Her brother shook his head.

"I will never understand your obsession with Zuko and Sokka,"

"You watch the series and you'll get it too, like Zuko is absolutely--"

"Please stop. I'm in no moods for your 'Why Zuko is an amazing character' rants again." Meghana was highkey offended.

"Fine then, don't blame me if step-1 of your 'asking Priya out' plan fails then," She walked back in her room with a smug grin on her face.

"Wait, you can't do that!"

"Watch me bitch," Meghana was enjoying her brother beg for something when her father called her from the hall.

"Meghana!"

"Yes, papa?"

"I talked to your friend,"

"...And?"

"I'm still thinking." Meghana frowned slightly.

"That's ok... thinking is good..?" She was always awkward with her father, but this conversation deserved an award of its own.

"...Yes, yes it is. Although, I was under the impression that I was going to speak to 2 people?" Meghana was about to reply when her phone ping-ed loudly. She excused herself for a minute and opened the texts.

She thanked the stars for Hadi's impeccable timing and told her father that the 'other friend' was also ready to speak to him. This time, however; she left the hall without her father shooing away.

'It seemed obvious he was going to do it anyways, so what's the point in staying there?' She thought to herself, entering her brother's room to try and see what he was up to.

"....I don't know, dude. Maybe we should ask your sister, she knows this kind of stuff way better than us..." Meghana heard someone speaking as she sat on her brother's messy bed.

"Ask me what?" The two men in question jumped at her voice.

"GOoDNEsS womAN! Don't sneak up on us like that!" Her brother patted his chest, almost having a heart attack at her sudden presence.

"Sorry," She said sheepishly, and smiled at the person next to her brother. "Hey Mark!"

"Hey," He smiled and gave her a small wave. She wanted to ask him how he'd come in, considering that the intercom didn't ring even one; but she looked around the room, and sure enough, she spotted his shoes below the window.

"So what did you want to ask me?" She walked over to the desk where her brother and Mark were seated. Meghana's brother was very hesitant to answer her question and instead, nudged Mark slightly, who seemed a bit taken aback.

"Huh, oh... erm... Madhav wanted me to help him with the editing for his thumbnail, but as you can clearly see, his editing sucks," Mark winced as Meghana's brother elbowed him sharply. "So I suggested asking you, since you can do it much better than him," He continued, rubbing his side.

"Only if you want to, of course." Meghana thought about it for a moment and looked at the edit to see whether it was really that bad.

"Fuck, this is disastrous," She frowned, examining the edit. "What happened to Dennis?" She asked, referring to her brother's friend; the one that she did not have a crush on, and most importantly, the one who edited the thumbnails for her brother's videos.

"He's down with the flu, so he has to rest for at least 3 weeks." Mark explained, frowning.

"That really sucks, but fine, I'll help you." Meghana couldn't stop feeling that she dug herself a hole deep enough to bury the entire country in, but it was all worth it when she saw that stupid grin on Mark's face.

"Really!? Thank you so much!" Oh, right. Her brother was there too.

"Damn I'm feeling really generous today. I helped you two times? That's gotta be a new record." she blew on her nails. "Let's just hope dad says yes to the whole road trip thing,"

"Wait, road trip?" Mark looked extremely confused.

"Yeah, some of my friends were planning on going on a road trip across Europe." She explained.

"That seems really cool!"

"It is, and I hope dad lets me go--" And because of what seemed like amazing timing, (but is actually poorly structured plot convenience), her father walked in.

"What are you doing in Madhav's room?" Her father looked surprised. "Oh, and hello Mark," He acknowledged Mark's presence, nodding in his direction.

"Oh I was just helping Mark and Madhav with some professional-level editing, why?"

"Could you come to the hall for a minute?" Meghana nodded and followed her father out of the room, not before sharing a knowing glance with her brother.

"If I die, please play dynamite during my funeral," She whispered to him.

"I don't want to risk you coming back alive, sorry." If Meghana could, she would respond, but she had to follow her dad to the hall to hear his final verdict.

She mentally played the Battle of Hogwarts background music.

'This is it.' She thought. 'It all comes down to this. Either he says yes, or no. And don't be disappointed if he says no.' Meghana was prepared for the worst.

"I talked with your friends and I've made a decision," Her father's voice brought her back to reality.

"You can go." He sighed deeply, "But," Meghana stopped her internal celebration. "You will not do anything that you shouldn't be doing, is that clear?" She nodded vigorously.

"I've never been the one to do irresponsible things, you know that, right?" Her father sighed and nodded.

"I know, but it's my duty as a father to tell you this," He patted Meghana on her shoulder. "The outside world is a messed up place, and I don't want you to make any rash decisions. But you've earned this one. Truly." He smiled at her. "Think of it as a late 'good job on your exams' present. But all said and done, start packing now, you'll be leaving on the 31st."

Why the Left is left nowhere in India ?

You will ideally see in the media that the leftists or communists are mainly defined as the two political parties i.e CPI (Communist party of India) and CPM (Communist party of India- Marxist). Before we go into why the leftists are no longer relevant and being time and again rejected in India, let us know who the real leftists or communists are. In reality, the real leftists are filled in the media, academia, intellectuals, activists, lawyers, bollywood, comedians and many other sectors. You can easily identify them since they all end up having the same approach towards politics. First they will disguise themselves as someone being independent in their views and then press their agenda. Second the only person whose opinion that matters is their own. You can clearly see their behaviour since the Gujarat 2002 riots till today. Even if the then Chief Minister got a clean chit from the Supreme Court, it is still that their opinion is supreme and that he is a culprit. Third, they support terrorists like Ishrat Jahan, Afzal Guru, Yakub Menon (remember how they went at 2 am to the Supreme Court to stop him from being hanged) and Burhan Wani. Fourth, they all speak for only one community whether its the Gujarat Riots, Muzaffarnagar Riots, Mob Lynching and even as we saw in CAA it was only about one community. For example in the case of lynching, as an Indian I would want justice for every victim whether it be Akhlaq, Ramesh or Peter regardless of the community one belongs to but for the commies that is not the case. Ofcourse there are some exceptions in the leftists as well and I have friends and family who support the left ideology and oppose Modi, who still talk sense but others are just too full of themselves and think it is only their opinion that matters. Even the Congress which was at one time more Nationalistic who took decisions like the nuclear deal which was in the nation's interest have now become leftist e.g we saw in the JNU incident in 2016 where after Anti National speeches were made in the campus, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi went there to give his support and called it "Free Speech". Right from there to opposing Surgical and Balakot strikes to removing the Sedition Law as a promise in their manifesto.

Now that we know who they are, let's come to the question why the left is left nowhere in India ? Well this is not just the case in India but the entire World. You look at countries especially the big economies like the US, UK, Germany, France and Japan, the left have and are been wiped out by the people of those countries. There are many other countries like Israel, Australia, Turkey, Russia, Brazil and Greece (the last two being left bastions at one time) where the left had to beat the dust. Amidst the Coronavirus some might not be aware that Bernie Sanders (hero of the leftists across the World) from the Democrats has failed to even become the Democrats representative for taking on Donald Trump in the next US elections. There are lots of reasons behind the leftists debacle but the main reason is that their ideas and opinions have no relevance amongst the common public and that is why they are getting rejected. You look at their stand on various issues whether it be gender, religion and human rights. In the name of gender equality rather than fighting for women's rights their "feminism" is used for male bashing (even many women do not agree with their fake feminism) and in the name of equality in religion, Hindu bashing has been their way of getting it (even many Muslims disagree with this approach). Supporting terrorists and as we recently saw rapists in the Nirbhaya case in the name of human rights has been their policy. There is a big difference between equality and appeasement and when you have ideas like these, getting rejected is the inevitable result.

Personal attacks is another reason for the failure of the left. It has been close to 2 decades that the leftists have been calling Modi Hitler, Fascist, Anti Muslim and the list goes on but the results have been in front of everyone to see. Attacking a leader can be part of a strategy like the BJP does for Rahul Gandhi but to just use that as your only strategy will not help one garner enough support. It is the same mistake that the leftists made in the US and UK where they were too busy attacking Trump and Johnson respectively and telling the people how horrible they are but we saw what the results were. People are looking for solutions to their problems especially the youth and that is what these leaders are giving them. If the leftists have something better to offer, they should come up with it rather than critizing for the sake of criticizing and indulging just in personal attacks.

Freedom is another reason behind the leftists situation in India. Now freedom is everyone's right and having a contrarian view is also one's right but when you say Anti National Speech is free speech, not standing for the National Anthem is a right and not respecting institutions like the Parliament, the Government, the Supreme Court, the Army and the Police is one's right, there is only one end to this kind of freedom. Again criticising and allegations on institutions are two different things but unfortunately for the left freedom to put allegations has been their right. Also hypocrisy in freedom of speech has recently been seen where a journalist was physically attacked for asking question from a political family but the so called champions of freedom of speech and press went missing because the journalist has a different view as theirs and the family had never been questioned by them for reasons well known to them.

In India for a very long time there was a lobby in the media, intellectuals, academia etc who used to enjoy this monopoly where only their opinion used to matter. But since the Modi Government came into power in 2014 things have changed. Today there are media channels that give a contrarian view to theirs and are getting support from the public. Social Media has played a big role in countering the leftists in the media, where only my opinion matters days are over and any false propaganda is busted.

Another reason for the lefts debacle has been their policy to oppose the country in an attempt to oppose Modi. Now as I mentioned before it was completely fine for them to oppose Modi since we are in a Democracy but when you oppose the country is where people will not tolerate the nonsense. Be it supporting terrorists, naxalites, taking the same stand as Pakistan on issues like Kashmir, Army and Air Strikes, CAA and saying Indian Muslims are not safe in India is only going to lead to one result and that is rejection from the people of India. As we have seen in the Coronavirus situation as well, they are too busy with their propaganda against India along with their leftist foreign media and embarrassing themselves by saying why India is not doing well whereas the entire World including WHO is lauding India for their work in containing the virus.

There is nothing wrong in thinking you are smart but if you think you are the only ones who are smart, then you are living in an illusion and unfortunately that is the case with the leftists. I am not saying that the rightists are filled with saints but the issue is the left have lost so much credibility and are so far from ground realities not just in India but in the World, that even if the right is not that strong they end up getting elected by the people (Angela Merkel in Germany being the classic example).

I still believe that there is space for the leftist in Indian politics and there should be a strong opposition in a Democracy which role the left can play especially the Congress. For that to happen there are some do's and don'ts. The Do's are raising issues that effect the common man like education, jobs, healthcare and the overall Economic issues. They need to go back to the old left which was of the masses like the farmers and labourers rather than being identified as the liberal elitists who sit in their ac rooms giving opinions and having no clue about the ground realities. Don'ts are to stop Hindu and India bashing which are currently only hampering their credibility. They can learn a thing or two from one of their favourite leftist leader Arvind Kejriwal who has been taking Nationalistic stands right from supporting abrogation of Article 370 to keeping Nationalistic subjects in education. He has also become a Hanuman Bhakt but I am not saying the leftists need to do that, just stopping Hindu bashing can help get some credibility back. As I mentioned before personally attacking Modi is only going spiral back like it has done since Gujarat 2002 but attacking on issues can gain some traction.

So rather than taking stands like not wanting to stand for the National Anthem because it is one's freedom, I want the real leftists to please stand up, openly support and oppose an ideology but we should always stand together and keep our Nation above Politics.

It is a good time to be an independent filmmaker and Hardik Mehta agrees with us. Hardik’s first documentary Amdavad Ma Famous won him the National Film award for Best Non-Feature Film, traveled extensively to film festivals across the globe and has now been acquired by the digital giant Netflix. Skin Deep, a short directed and edited by him, written by Vikramaditya Motwane got a theatrical release under the anthology Chaar Cutting. Mehta strongly feels that if you have a story, you shouldn’t wait for anyone and just go out there and shoot it. His filmography also boasts of films like Lootera, Queen and Trapped.

Hardik’s latest short, The Affair, produced by Drishyam Films, is an affectionate and a tenderhearted love story that will resonate with every Mumbai couple. Hardik chats with Pandolin about the inspiration and shooting process of The Affair, the city’s influence on his filmmaking, the success of Amdavad Ma Famous and the digital revolution.

From Skin Deep to The Affair, what would you say about your filmmaking journey?

The journey has been good because I was not as satisfied with Skin Deep as I am with The Affair. I can see myself maturing as a storyteller, which is also something my friends and family members have told me. I thought I will never be able to be a part of the film industry but I have managed somehow. Bollywood and studio produced films are very typical; the director doesn’t have a voice, it’s all about what the producer and the studio want and what the actor needs to look like with the director becoming a puppet in most cases.

Of course, there are some great directors out there who can bend the rules and voice their opinions but they are a handful. In a quest to find one’s own voice, you try to make a short which you produce yourself, film a documentary and take it to festivals because you don’t want the product to be diluted or polluted by somebody else’s whims and fancies of how you should dictate the market or how the film should look like.

How difficult is it riding solo in this film industry?

It is difficult but it is the reality, in today’s times we have to be our own producers. Nobody is going to praise your talent and give you tons of money to produce a film. So let’s be very practical about it, if you have a topic, get into the dirt and do the job even if that means carrying the tripod on the streets of the city or working in extreme weather conditions, you can’t expect a vanity van for yourself at the beginning.

However, with the digital revolution and more independent filmmakers coming to the forefront, has the scene become better?

Yes, absolutely. We never thought Netflix would acquire rights to our film Amdavad Ma Famous because documentaries don’t have a future in India apart from a couple of screenings. We have come a long way. If you make a good film, there is a platform and a market for it and the audience will appreciate your work. It is a very good time to be a part of the industry. We had a small concept (The Affair), we shot it in a day and within a day of uploading, we had 50,000 views. Who wouldn’t want that! Times are good for people who want to tell stories and don’t want to depend on producers and studios. Just go ahead and do it on your own.

You have worked on films varying in genres and formats, has this been a conscious decision?

In today’s times, there is no stereotyping; one is not expected to stick to a genre. If a person has made a TVC on jewelry he won’t get only jewelry ads to make in the future, that is not how it works. Also, if you have left everything behind and come to Mumbai to make films then limiting yourself to only one kind of cinema would mean not giving due respect to yourself. Amdavad Ma Famous is a documentary, Trapped is a feature film and The Affair is a short, so it is great to work on different genres and formats and today’s digital revolution is giving us that opportunity to be everywhere.

You directed and edited Skin Deep, co-wrote the screenplay of Trapped with Vikramaditya Motwane, worked on Lootera and Queen as a script supervisor and an assistant director, would it be right to say that every aspect of filmmaking fascinates you?

Nothing can replace the high of being on a set with technicians and actors but I haven’t had that kind of luxury till now because we have been shooting with a very limited crew. The Affair was shot with four people; the location sound was by my friend Pranav, cinematographer Piyush, producer Akanksha, the actors and myself. Even Amdavad Ma Famous was shot with only four crew members; Trapped was made with the crew size of thirty five which is very less for a feature in India.

Being on the set with different equipment would be great but you can’t have that luxury always. You have to try and make good films even in the most limited resources possible.

Having worked with Vikramaditya Motwane on Skin Deep and Trapped, how have these collaborations influenced you as a filmmaker?

One of the biggest learning is that there is no replacement to hard work. I have seen how much that man works, on his edits, on each shot, designing the sequences, working through the night. He is a terribly hard taskmaster and everyone who works with him loves that about him. Also, the craft of what kind of camera should be used for a certain shot, whether the camera should be placed behind the actor or you need a profile shot to get a particular emotion; he is very good with it. It’s great to learn from him but at the end of the day you should have your own voice. So yes, I tried to get so many aspects from him but at the end of the day I should have my own voice and people should never feel like someone’s assistant has made this film.

Coming to the making of The Affair, what was the inspiration behind the story?

The inspiration is all these couples you keep seeing at Marine Drive, Worli Sea Face and Bandra Reclamation. My parents might have also been there once in a while thirty-five years ago. When you walk around the city, ideas do come to you. I wanted to make something short and sweet like Chhoti Si Baat or the wonderful world of 70s and 80s where the cinema was simple, even if the conflicts were complex they were treated simply and the outcome was beautiful. There was no dramatic music or villains so I thought why not recreate that kind of cinema again.

Despite being from Vadodra you get the essence of Mumbai right, how have you connected with Mumbai? How much has this city influenced your stories and filmmaking?

The day I landed in Bombay, I told myself that this is my karmabhoomi, which means whatever I have to achieve, I have to achieve it here. Mumbai has been such an inspiration to so many people and storytellers. The idea is to tell something about the city in the best possible fashion. My stories are related with the city and the individual. I co-wrote Trapped with Amit Joshi, it was his idea but I could relate to it. The lines which we had written about one wanting to go out, eat pav bhaji, face the daily struggles and insults that Mumbai has to offer are so unique to the city and fun to experience that you would miss it in any other city.

Similarly when I saw the whole kite flying madness in Ahmedabad, I was intrigued by it. The city would reveal itself to you as an artist, filmmaker, painter when you walk through it. The idea of walking in a city is very important so you can see the sights and sounds, which you would never see from a car or a cab.

How did you go about the process of casting for The Affair?

Akanksha, my wife, who is the film’s producer was very fond of Khushboo (Upadhyay) and wanted to cast her in something. When I showed her this script, she said the woman should be Khushboo. I was very happy that she pointed it out because I saw potential in her as she had played a small role in Trapped ( the woman who stays in the opposite house).

Amit Sial is a superb actor. His face resembles somebody who has struggled in Bombay and has had a difficult life. For some reason he has always been cast as the negative, aggressive character so I thought why don’t I cast him as a sweet fellow and he is such a warm person in real life too.

The story starts revealing layers to you when you are shooting and the actors bring along a lot on the floor

With Drishyam Films board, how does the film get an added impetus? When and how did they come on board? 

Manish (Mundra) saw the film and was very happy with it. He asked me what I was doing with it and since I had no plans, he suggested that Drishyam Films present it. We were overjoyed as Drishyam Films is a name to be reckoned with, they represent good cinema and none of their films have been bad or over the top, Umrika being my favourite. Them presenting the short was adding so much to my biography, the views would be great which otherwise our own production house wouldn’t be able to achieve. Drishyam came at a very good point; it’s a great collaboration. It’s great to see that a production house feels the need of telling stories in whatever format that can be possible.

The film has been shot in real outdoor locations, what was the shooting process like? Was it a guerilla shoot?

Yes, that’s the whole idea. If you watch Amdavad Ma Famous too, the entire shoot is guerilla. There are only four people shooting, nobody even knows that there is a shoot happening. Cameras like Sony A7S or Canon 5D look like still photography cameras. The idea of using this new technology is to use it to your own benefit.

While shooting The Affair, we just entered a bus and the conductor asked for a ticket, so we paid the money and told him that we wanted to take a photo. In the train too nobody had any problem when we were shooting. You get some curious looks but you have to be swift enough to get out after a few stations otherwise you might get into trouble. The idea is to always do things quick and fast and not give too much thought to how you will do it.

The film is just 6-minutes long, yet it stirs something within the viewer. As a storyteller, how do you encapsulate all the right chords in such a short duration?

You don’t plan these things. We had a basic one page script which I sent to my crew and a couple of friends who I thought could give me inputs and we just went ahead and shot it. You don’t think and design that this will mean something, then you are becoming an academician and not a filmmaker. You take a story and the story starts revealing layers to you when you are shooting and the actors bring along a lot on the floor.

What draws you towards a story?

I believe that you shouldn’t try to put too much of yourself into the story and tell the story in the way it can be told best to the audience whether it is drama, thriller, comedy, documentary or a short film. The point of interest and whether the story has ever been told before in this particular fashion draws me to it. When I was making Amadavad Ma Famous someone told me that there is a film called Patang that is exactly like this. Patang is about a family feud during the kite flying festival but mine is about kids running and capturing kites and getting abused by the adults. Even with The Affair, a lot of people told me that it reminded them of Piya ka Ghar, I had no clue about the film but I read about it and it was very similar. It was interesting to notice that the conflict was same in 1975 and 2017. Although these films represent similar worlds but the treatments are so different.

You are penning a series for Amazon Prime next. What are the merits or demerits of this medium from your point of view?

This is such a great time to be a filmmaker, you can make a short, a documentary, work on a feature, be a part of Amazon series’ writer’s room. Anushka Sharma is producing this series, Navdeep Singh of NH10 fame is directing it and Sudip Sharma who wrote Udta Punjab and NH10 is the show runner and my co-writer along with two more writers. It’s a noir investigative series with a different treatment and approach that excites me. To write a noir story is not very easy, you can’t be slow or too pacy, the atmosphere and the investigation has to flow smoothly. Working under Sudip and Navdeep Sir who are experts in this genre will be fun, let’s see how it goes!

There is a lot of merit in digital, everyone is telling stories now. The demerit is of course democratization of this medium, which will lead to mediocrity but that’s fine, to each his own. I absolutely love the idea of film and celluloid but you can’t be so romantic about these things.

And is a feature film on the cards any time soon?

Yes, hopefully. I hope this gives people some ideas that I can do a feature too.
