Pt. 1 There are two schools of thought regarding when Jikook started dating. First and primary theory is INU era/2016. Most jikookers believe they became official following JK's coming of age. Second theory is 2017/ GCFt. Some believe that jikook became official in 2017 but could have/probably were engaged in not so platonic relations prior. I write this bc I find myself torn and want to have a discussion about it. There are things that lead me to believe both but both can't be equally true

pt. 2 In 2016 there is definitely a shift in how jikook interact. The sexual tension is palpable and we get many moments that IMO confirm at the very least intimacy: osaka vlive, graduation song JK sings to Jm, stares and etc. However, nothing signals couple more than their post GCFt aura. Even the members began policing their interactions. So, I am more inclined to believe theory 2 BUT I have a problem with thinking Jk and JM would be okay just fooling around with no strings attached..

Pt 3. Neither JM or JK seem like the type who would be okay with that sort of arrangement. I could be wrong, and that could explain some of the insecurity I see from JK prior to 2017. If there is intimacy with no label then one could understandably feel uncertain especially if internally they've defined the relationship. But, I do struggle with accepting the possibility that either would be okay with an undefined relationship but that could just be me projecting. So I am pulled to theory 1.

Pt 4. To sum it up, based on what I see and how I interpret it I am more drawn to theory 2, they started dating on 2017 but were intimate prior. The intimate "prior" part is one of the things that puts me on the fence. Based off Jikook's words and actions it's hard for me to see them engaging in undefined intimacy. However, that post GCFt aura which screams new couple + evidence of sexual intimacy in 2016 really makes me pause. I have more reasons for me being torn but your Thoughts?

I’m kind of hesitant to touch this one but since you took all the effort I will give you my thoughts. I’ll be answering in terms of a relationship shift, because we don’t know if they are in a defined relationship so I can’t speak to that. We do know that their relationship at some point took a turn from bickering and brotherly to tender and caring. And I have made some observations on this relationship shift in the process of making my timeline. Let me speak on some milestones we’ve observed, and how they might fit into the picture of their relationship. 

In March of 2015, Jungkook made a song recommendation which caused some heads to turn, especially from LGBT fans. Over the past few days he had recommended some extremely depressing songs, but this song was both depressing, and about an unrequited love for another man. It’s called “Memo” by Years & Years. 

To me, this marks that something in Jungkook was shifting, in his mentality, in his personal attitudes, and in his newfound love for LGBT+ artists and music (which would become more and more apparent in the future). It doesn’t necessarily mean that something happened between him and Jimin but I think it’s an important milestone, especially for our perception of who he was as a person. He didn’t let us in on too much in those days. 

As per Jimin’s mentality, I actually think that it’s hard to see as much as a shift because he’d been pretty loud about admiring Jungkook since the beginning. However, I think a good example of timing for the other members catching on to the depth of his admiration is in this MV reaction video.

Jimin keeps mentioning how good Jungkook looks, and eventually Hobi, apparently fed up, just says “think about that by yourself”. It is just an interesting thing to say. Not as huge of a moment but just a little detail that has always stood out to me.

Around this time, Jikook started showing up at the airports in matching, but generic looking outfits. It could be nothing, but it was interesting to me that around the same time of these ‘milestone’ shifts in mentality, they also started wearing matching outfits. 

The next big milestone for me, which I’ve already made a post about, happened in August of 2015. I remember the timing because it’s marked by Jimin fainting on stage at a fansign, though this probably (maybe) has nothing to do with the actual shift itself. Though... maybe it does, because the very next concert, 2 days later, Jungkook flirted with Jimin on stage, and Jimin couldn’t hold back his smile in response. 

Then, just a few days later, Jungkook gave another song recommendation, and Jimin tweeted a reference to the lyrics of the song with a blush emoji and a music note emoji in response??????????

After this, a string of very interesting concert moments happened between the pair. I can’t help but to think something drastic changed. 

That being said, I do think there were more things that had to happen between the pair to arrive at the state they’re at now. 

That being said, just a month or so later Jungkook discovered and tweeted about Troye Sivan, and from there it was all downhill. lol

I can’t speak yet for what the following turning points were, but I think this is the most important turning point that happened in their relationship, maybe prior to 2017 and GCF Tokyo, because it was the gateway for all of the intimate behavior to start occurring in front of the camera. 

I think that behind the scenes things really changed in 2015, and it was a process of them coming to terms with whatever they are, and then becoming more and more comfortable showing that truth to the camera and the public. This was a several year long journey, and they are still on it even now. Things have surely changed behind the scenes between August 2015 and 2020, but I stand by my belief that whatever happened in 2015 allowed those other changes to slowly occur. 

I know this doesn’t directly answer your question, but I can’t tell you “Jikook started dating HERE because we don’t even know if they are dating. 

I am guessing you are hesitant about the possibility of an undefined relationship between the duo, maybe because of a cultural taboo or just a personal moral belief, but you have to understand that we really can’t just assume that they’re dating and state that as fact, and there’s also a lot more variables in their lives than there are in an every day relationship. I’m not saying they’re not dating, but it also wouldn’t shock me if they were undefined, or still are now. 

I absolutely can see them engaging in ‘undefined intimacy’ if I’m being honest with you. Jimin is a hopeless romantic, sure, but they were also mid-20s boys, and let’s be real, Jimin had been yearning for a loooong time. 

And I’ll tell you from personal experience as a gay person, undefined experimentation is pretty much a GIVEN for us when we’re figuring out our sexualities. Straight people don’t have to really think twice about ‘is what i’m feeling real? is it just a mistake? is it a phase? am i just fooling myself? will it stop being real when it becomes sexual?’ and 100 other questions. If you really do think they are dating, I can pretty much guarantee you they would’ve experimented with each other prior to putting any sort of label on it. With a few exceptions I’m sure, this is just simply how a lot of LGBT+ people figure themselves out, and I urge you to not view that as a negative thing. 

Anyway I’m not sure I said everything I want to but I’m running out of steam, lol. Hope this somewhat helped :)

[Behind-the-Scenes] HELIOS Rising Heroes: Animation Showcase

“HELIOS Rising Heroes: Animation Showcase” is an English voice fan project I worked on all by myself (barring voice actors) that took five months to make.

The original plan was to make just one video, but it ended up being eighteen of them!

In this write-up, I’ll be discussing details about the response to the project, recording all the footage, video editing, voice acting + audio processing, script translations + rewriting, which fonts were used, and even the emulator used. I’ve organized it into sections to make it easier to find certain things. Also, this is directed to English-speaking readers since I’m not gonna bother translating the entire thing to Japanese.

THE DREAM

I wanted to make this fandub ever since the game was released (in Aug 2020). I just knew that English voices would be extremely fitting to the world of HELIOS with a setting inspired by America and characters, places, and terms mostly in English. I was disappointed to hear that the studio behind the game, Cacalia Studio of Happy Elements K.K., had no interest to localize their games outside of Asia, which meant the chances of an English dub, let alone a global release were close to zero.

I was able to understand how to play the game thanks to the fan translators, some of which came from other Cacalia Studio games, and got inspired to continue learning Japanese (there was a previous attempt to translate Japanese lyrics years back).

What I thought was just the silly dream of one overseas player’s became something much more!

THE TIMELINE (BRIEF OVERVIEW)

I played the game for about two months prior to working on the project. Before starting the project, I had to sort out graphical and technical issues on my end first as I was unable to play the game smoothly until November.

RESPONSE TO THE PROJECT

I was absolutely shocked with the response to the preview video, which at the time of writing has just hit 10K views and almost 600 likes on Twitter and YouTube combined. Not bad for an unpaid hobby fandub (a joke only I find funny...) of an otherwise “niche” Japanese-only mobile game.

As of Apr 4th, 2021 - Thank you so much. This is more than I could’ve asked for.

The preview video blew up way more than anticipated, setting up for a bit of disappointment when the Showcase video was released.

The amount of views I expected for this project within its prime were a couple hundred views, so I’m content that the Showcase video reached that amount (it had ~500 by the end of March).

The expectations for the battle clips were an average of 100 views and a handful of likes - and each one got roughly that amount (or more) - so I’m also content with that, especially for something that’s just “bonus material”.

I tried my best to promote this project on Twitter with three main tweets. My one regret with promoting the project was making the second tweet after publishing the Showcase because the Japanese I wrote there was pretty terrible (as I was all worn out from editing and was in a haste to tweet about it). I tried to make up for it in a follow-up reply the next day, but it was too late. I was satisfied with how my third and final tweet and thread of battle clips turned out, but it sadly didn’t garner much attention. A reason for this was probably due to bad timing. I knew that the timing of the last tweet was awful as HeliosR did something special for April Fools’ day, plus the Easter event was being hyped around the same time, but I really wanted to finish up the project within March (my timezone, at least. It was already April 1st in Japan).

It was important to also make the videos accessible to the Japanese audience as they were a large portion of the viewers. This proved to be a challenge as my knowledge of Japanese is limited - at least for me, it’s easier to translate grammar-correct Japanese than it is to write my own sentences.

I ultimately decided against posting any of the videos on NicoNico because I wasn’t sure about Japan’s laws regarding copyrighted material. I knew it was already risky enough posting on social media and didn’t want to take any additional risks.

ABOUT THE FOOTAGE (1) – HEROES & ATTACK ORDER

HeliosR uses a gacha system, so to be able to even make something like this, you’d first need access to all 16 ★4 OG Heroes in the game.

I had them spread across five different accounts, four of which were reroll accounts. Asakou from the Cacalia RPG server gave me two of those accounts, and I rerolled myself for Keith and Ren during their Birthday Orders (one free 10-pull per account). Every account is also given a free ★4 selector ticket which I made good use of.

3,000 rubies (in-game currency) were sacrificed to pity the ★4 OG Dino when he was released in December just for the sake of the fandub!

Besides covering all of the Heroes, I also needed to play through each account to unlock certain story chapters, event stages, and evolve the Heroes for their shiny evolved CG art. Some of the Expert event stages (that had the Nighttime backgrounds) proved difficult to clear with a new account.

When using skills, the order of the Heroes were edited such that everyone was able to have the majority of their lines used at least once. All Heroes had two “receiving support” lines, two or three “supporting” lines, and two or three “skills against the enemy” lines. Some of the extra lines didn’t make it into the Showcase, so they were used for the individual clips instead.

I should’ve used Gray instead of Marion for the account that had Billy because you can see Marion’s sprite in Billy’s image. xD

In the Showcase, you may notice that the "Union Attacks" consist of all the ★4 CG images. These were spliced together; I never had all four Heroes of the same sector on the same account. For example, I would have Gray, Asch, and Jay on one account and Billy on another account, recorded their ★4 Bursts separately using the same background (from unlocking the Expert stages on both accounts), and then edited all the footage together.

Jay’s Burst was later re-recorded with a different attacking order so that he wouldn’t link to Billy.

It was also important to keep the same order of Bursts as well as use all four Bursts in the same turn. The ★4 Burst order was usually determined by who didn’t link skill with one another (with the exception of East sector as I was still figuring things out) because I didn’t want the link skill activation getting in the way of the animations.

As a little bonus, I also showed off the exclusive damaging skills of the Chapter 6 and 7 ★4 frames that I was lucky enough to pull from the gacha: Marion’s "Invitation To The Dance“ (roses), Faith’s “Synthetic Vibes” (beats), and Dino’s “Crow Mark Dead End” (claw marks).

ABOUT THE FOOTAGE (2) - BACKGROUNDS

Since I didn’t want to use the same battle music and backgrounds for all of the videos, I decided to use some of the themes from the limited-time events which went as far back as Nov 2020.

Each background has three variants (Daytime, Afternoon, Nighttime) and so I carefully picked them based on the colours. I ended up using mostly Expert stages - or Nighttime backgrounds, since Daytime versions were only used for Normal difficulty stages (which are too easy to clear).

The backgrounds used for the Showcase, all from limited-time events.

I decided to mix up some of the Heroes from other sectors in the individual clips for fun, basing it off of their relationships with each other. Using South sector’s background for Gast’s clip was a purposeful choice because I already used the North sector’s background for the other three North sector Heroes. I made sure to include Akira and Will of the South sector in Gast’s clip so it didn’t feel too random!

The only default background I didn’t use was Chapter 2’s because I already made use of the Casino theme for OG West sector’s individual clips. (...Plus I didn’t really like that background :p)

The Christmas event was the only event that went unused during the Nov 2020 - Mar 2021 period.

I didn’t record the East sector event (Christmas) in Dec 2020 because I was actually too busy with the casting call! I also didn’t think I would make use of it after already recording the Prison event intended for East sector. The project ended up taking so long that it actually benefited from having a wider selection of events over the months, which also showcased the beauty of the game.

ABOUT THE WORK & VIDEO EDITING

Hardware:

A decent computer.

A pair of no-name earbuds I found while cleaning out some junk.

Software:

All FREE!

*There’s a catch

NoxPlayer* emulator (debloated, read more about in its own section) and Open Broadcast Studio were used to record game footage and sounds.

Davinci Resolve was the main tool I used to edit the videos. A very demanding program that I only recommend using if you have a mid to high end computer.

MediBang was used to edit some of the art like the logos, but I ended up using Resolve for the majority of the graphics, including the thumbnails.

Audacity and Cakewalk were used to edit audio.

Many aspects for this project took longer than I had hoped because there was a learning process with using Resolve for the first time. I’m also a bit of a perfectionist, re-exporting videos tons of times just to fix small mistakes. Lastly, the time it took to make all the fancy effects was longer than I’d estimated. As the project dragged on, there was pressure to not delay the release of the videos any longer than I had to. A lot of this was self-imposed though.

There were days where I just did something else other than work on the project, which helped re-fuel my motivation when I decided to pick it up again.

Pretty much everything in the videos were taken from the game itself. The only graphics that were taken from the official website instead were the Substance symbols (the pictures with HERO at the bottom).

Additional overlay graphics were custom-made. It took two whole days to make the 3-second long sector intros and another two days to create and animate the arrow graphics for the credits. These were made using Resolve’s fusion and colour features. Much of the edit was inspired by the official HeliosR designs.

The Preview video took after the ★4 Burst mini-previews as part of HeliosR’s promotional campaign, uploaded before the game was released.

The credits at the end of the Showcase were inspired by a different video, this time being the Half-Anniversary video.

The Showcase - which had a duration of 29:07 - was 11.5GB large in size. It took almost three hours to render (which I re-rendered to fix things) and two DAYS to upload to YouTube because I experienced multiple uploading interruptions. It’s a good thing you can re-upload the same video to continue where you left off without having to restart the entire process.

The individual hero clips didn’t take as long to make (but they took a while anyway as I re-uploaded some of them to fix minor mistakes). The recommendations for the VAs that were given alongside the publishing of each clip also spanned over another five days as I wanted to personalize and think about each one carefully.

A pretty frustrating part of the project was the prevalent lag when recording footage, which may have been due to the emulator and/or some technical things on my end. The Prison event used for the Showcase was the very first one I recorded when I wasn’t as aware about the lag, and so it suffered a bit as a result. The Union Attacks were the worst offender. I re-recorded the same battle scenes several times each just in case, then went through the footage frame-by-frame in Resolve and chose the ones with the least amount of lag. If all of the recorded footage suffered lag at different parts, I would even compare and splice together parts of them that didn’t lag. There was also audio lag (a known issue of NoxPlayer) so I had to move all of the audio forward by 1/3 of a second.

By the end of the project I had over 200 videos of game footage with a total size of over 24GB and a total duration exceeding 9 hours, not even counting all the ones that went unused.

The Heroes weren’t the only ones who evolved. MS Paint not recommended for thumbnails.

Overall, (despite the few mistakes here and there that nobody other than me would notice) I was happy with how everything turned out, down to the gorgeous thumbnails! I am an artist, after all~ :^)

I also have much more respect for video editors. They should be called VIDEO ANIMATORS!

ABOUT THE VOICES & AUDIO PROCESSING

When making a dub, it doesn’t mean we want to replace or best the original language, we just want to give it a new interpretation. In fact, the characters’ voice descriptions and direction provided in the scripts were heavily inspired by the seiyuu (Japanese VAs) and how they performed their lines.

Honestly, this was THE dream cast!! Some of the VAs had comparably similar voices to the Japanese ones which was an amazing coincidence. The ones that may not have sounded as similar had unique interpretations that I felt still suited their characters well. I also chose actors based on their performance, and everyone delivered!

Voice actors were not expected to imitate the Japanese voices and lines. They were provided direction and reference videos to help time their lines, but were otherwise given liberty when it came to their own interpretations.

You shouldn’t hear any jarring differences between the voice actors’ microphones and setups. That’s because I took the time to process the audio. Faith’s audio was submitted to me post-processed so it was used as a guideline for what the audio quality should sound like. Some of the others had comparable quality to Faith’s, so I only added compression to balance their volumes. Most of them benefited from equalization of various levels - this took some experimenting back and forth with the frequency spectrum. Lastly, a couple more benefited from clip fixing, noise gate, de-essing and/or click removal. It was very important for VAs to have at least decent room treatment; while small differences between mic frequencies can always be altered, echoes are difficult if not impossible to remove completely.

I feel that audio engineering is highly underrated and more important than ever as voice actors continue to record from home studios.

And in case it wasn’t already clear, this was purely voluntary work. No VAs or myself were paid to contribute anything for the project. Though, the experience alone was worth more than any amount of money.

ABOUT THE SCRIPT & TRANSLATIONS

HELIOS Rising Heroes「エリオスR」English Translation - Battle Lines

This spreadsheet consists of the literal translations for all the battle lines I could find in the game (it still isn’t done -yet-, plan to finish it when I get the chance). These are only fanmade and are not guaranteed to be accurate, especially as I wasn’t able to find another translator to help or proofread it.

After translating the lines, I made many additional revisions from the literal meanings such as changing the intention of the line slightly to flow better, having extra words added in to provide more context, or changing them completely. Thus, the lines used in the video are NOT literal TLs!

Another thing of note that may not seem apparent, but is what I feel an important aspect of character writing, is to remain completely unbiased towards all the characters. Personal favourites aside, I ensured that every Hero had their own spotlight as well as lines written in a way that remained faithful to their personality, no matter how unlikeable they were (looking at you, Asch Albright).

Even after giving voice actors their scripts, I made another revision in February after the release of the aforementioned Half-Anniversary video with the transcriptions for the ★4 Bursts, which is when I discovered a couple of mistakes with my transcriptions. This resulted in me having to edit out a part of one of the voice actors’ lines (Billy’s “String Show” line in his ★4 Burst) because of a translation mistake! I’m really glad I was able to double-check the correct lines before releasing the Preview video, or it would’ve looked pretty silly to Japanese viewers.

The last set of revisions were just minor edits to the subtitles (such as using kanji instead of kana) while I was working on subtitling all the videos.

The rewritten line is a condensed version of one of Will’s ★4 Evolved CG lines (“For everyone... I’ll become more and more stronger!”). He had “Reach!” in both his attacking combo and regular Burst, so I gave him an extra unique line.

Original line:

warui kedo... kore de oshimai da! / “Sorry, but... it ends with this!”

Rewritten line:

“I’m sorry, but... it’s over for you! HAAAH!”

There were a couple of oversights I made with the script, and this was one of them that didn’t fit the animation properly. Props to Ryan for coming up with the extra shout at the end! So yeah, we kinda winged this line.

OSCAR BALE

When using skills against the enemy, during attacking combo, and in the ★4 Burst (repeat line)

Original line:

Rewritten lines:

“Too slow!” / “You’re slow!” / “Over here!”

Rewritten simply because I wanted to minimize repeated lines and change things up.

I wanted to add in a few military terms to reflect Gast’s background.

Rewritten line (with “mistake”):

“I’m not doing anything horrible or evil, alright? This is just business as usual... I suppose?”

Faith’s CG line had a mistake when I first translated and handed it off to his actor. I accidentally wrote “oshigoto” (work/business) instead of “oshioki” (punishment). The original has him pretty much saying the same thing twice anyway, so I would say the intention was still retained.

KEITH MAX

When supporting an ally

Original line:

Rewritten line:

“Stay alive, would ya~?”

I know Keith’s meant to say “serious” things in a sarcastic or snarky way, but I just had to add in this fun line!

“Leave it to me!”

The Japanese lines for Dino’s offensive skills were rather basic, with the third and unchanged line “Here goes!” being a repeat line Dino also says when attacking. I wanted to give him some more lines - as standard as they are - to show his personality a bit more, along with having an additional fun West sector interaction. The changes fit the animations better too. (I actually had his VA say the "Haah!" line, but ended up using a different take of “Here goes!” in place of it.)

ABOUT THE FONTS

Fonts were taken from various sources and were either FREE for personal use or had an open font license. I didn’t have access to the commercial fonts (such as Futura) used in-game, so these were the following fonts I made use of:

Techna Sans looked similar enough to Futura when capitalized, and still looked decent in lowercase.

Jost* is a font that was derived from Futura. Some of its uppercase letters are sharper than Futura's, but it worked pretty well for the text in the credits.

Gau Font Over Drive was used for the ANIMATION SHOWCASE text.

Gen Jyuu Gothic LP was used for the majority of the Japanese text and its English letters were also used for the battle clip subtitles on Twitter.

Meiryo UI (default font) was used for the Preview videos’ subtitles.

Noto Serif JP (default Google font) was used for the serif Japanese text in the credits.

ABOUT NOXPLAYER ANDROID EMULATOR

ETA: AS OF VERSION 1.1.18 (04/23/21), EMULATORS NO LONGER WORK WITH HELIOSR (AS WELL AS OTHER CACALIA STUDIO GAMES). THE BELOW INFORMATION IS OUTDATED.

If, for whatever reason you’re interested in using NoxPlayer, you should take caution when installing it onto your machine. I don’t advocate for or recommend installing Nox. I had to resort to emulation so that I could record the footage and sounds directly from my computer using OBS. The reason why I used Nox specifically is because Cacalia Studio doesn’t like emulators, blocking most of them from running their games. I found further instructions on how to run the game in Nox from the Cacalia RPG Discord (via Twitter @HeliosR_en).

First, not all Nox versions are safe. It should only be installed from the official website, Bignox. More recent versions (I believe from 6.3.0.6 and up) may contain malware such as Segurazo and Chromium packaged with the installer which can be annoying to remove. The version of Nox I used was 6.3.0.0 (you can install older versions, then just don’t update it), which has Android 7 and doesn’t contain packaged malware (AFAIK).

Second, NoxPlayer may be “free” to use, but it comes with bloatware and profits off of its users’ data by collecting and sending it to many different servers. The below guide is what I used to debloat Nox and minimize communication to these servers. Scroll down the comments for additional domains to add to the hosts file.

Ugly trend that can poison Indian cricket / GIDEON HAIGH

How we grew to admire them this summer, those dashing, defiant, skilful and fun Indian cricketers, led first by Virat Kohli then Ajinkya Rahane, as they taught Australia numerous cricket lessons. How we enjoyed, too, the scenes of their deservedly rapturous homecomings.

Prime minister Narendra Modi enjoyed exercising his prerogative of using the cricket team as symbolic of his “new India”. That “they took the challenge head on and looked for fresh solutions instead of getting frustrated by difficult conditions” exemplified how the nation could “emerge fearless” if “we overcome the fear of failure and unnecessary pressure”.

Standard stuff, of course. But let’s look a little closer, shall we?

Modi enjoys a curiously benign reputation hereabouts. Generally, Australian politicians look on India as simply a nice juicy trade market that is (a) not China and (b) see (a). “World’s largest democracy” comes trippingly off the tongue.

Unfortunately, India is a democracy in worsening decay, thanks to seven years of the BJP’s Hindu majoritarianism, at odds with the country’s traditions of pluralism and tolerance. And that’s got implications for cricket, even Australian cricket, of which we should be aware.

The ruling BJP’s modus operandi is demonising minorities, subverting institutions, intimidating media, criminalising dissent and, not least, tyrannising the internet.

No country shuts and throttles the net so regularly; no political party operates such slickly vicious online trolling. India swims in social media; into it the BJP’s digital operatives have a habit of throwing bloody bait, viz liberal celebrities, independent journalists and academics who have stepped out of line. Especially since last September.

That was when Modi’s administration rammed through the Rajya Sabha three bills designed to “liberalise” Indian agriculture. There had been no consultative process; the bills’ passage violated all parliamentary and constitutional norms; the laws were devoid of regulatory and legal protections for farmers, and as such a prescription for monopoly abuse, in a country where a score of companies already earn 70 per cent of corporate profits.

Discontent has roiled since. Demonstrations have been largely peaceful, if on an epic scale: a one-day strike in November involving 250 million people may well be the largest single protest in history, involving ten times as many people as marched for Black Lives Matter last year.

One exception was 26 January, India’s Republic Day, when 200 farmers were “detained” by Delhi’s notoriously violent police after diverting a march to the Red Fort. The same cops then created a cause célèbre by arresting a 22-year-old activist, Disha Ravi, basically for having the temerity to communicate with Greta Thunberg, which was described as showing intent “to wage economic, social, cultural and regional war against India.”

Why? Because India’s government craves the world’s attention but recoils from its scrutiny, and busily nourishes paranoia about foreign treachery so as to turn the political into the patriotic. And what really lit the blue touch paper was a tweet on 3 February by Rihanna, linking to a CNN article about an internet shutdown following the confrontation at the Red Fort.

“Why aren’t we talking about this?”, asked the pop chanteuse of her 100 million followers, adding the hashtag #FarmersProtests and generating almost a million likes.

Modi promptly upped the ante, threatening to jail Twitter’s local executives if Jack Dorsey did not suppress 100 allegedly “pro-farmer” accounts; Dorsey hastily capitulated.

Cyber battle was also joined by an army of counter tweeters flourishing hashtag banners such as #IndiaTogether and #IndiaAgainstPropaganda, somehow oblivious to their irony. And these included the elite of the country’s cricketers.

This is hardly so surprising. The Board of Control for Cricket in India is another institution increasingly pervaded by Modi’s myrmidons.

In November 2019, the BCCI “elected” as secretary Jay Shah and as treasurer Arun Singh Dhumal – respectively the son of home minister Amit Shah and the brother of finance minister Anurag Thakur, two particularly repulsive Modi cronies. The same election also promoted a character from Rajpur, Mahim Verma, secretary of the fledgling Cricket Association of Uttakharand – more on him presently.

Leading the way was Sachin Tendulkar: “External forces can be spectators but not participants. India’s sovereignty cannot be compromised. External forces can be spectators but not participants. Indians know India and should decide for India. Let’s remain united as a nation.”

Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, Suresh Raina, Ravi Shastri, Rohit Sharma and Anil Kumble issued slightly more emollient sentiments, with further calls for “unity” – implicitly echoing another BJP talking point, for which evidence is scant, that the farmers are aligned with Sikh separatists. Probably Rihanna fans too.

How strange that all these cricketers should have decided, independently and all at once, to inveigh against “propaganda”! How strange that they should then shrink from the week’s other significant Indian cricket issue….

Having played the last of 31 Tests in 2008, Wasim Jaffer has towered above Indian domestic cricket like Everest. He retired last March after playing more than 150 Ranji Trophy matches and accumulating almost 20,000 first-class runs at an average better than 50, and was recruited as coach by Uttakharand in north India.

Except it all ended acrimoniously on 10 February when Jaffer quit, “because of so much interference and bias of selectors and secretary in the selection matters for non-deserving players” – the secretary being old mate Verma.

Jaffer, though, is a Muslim. So Verma trumped up counterclaims of “communalism”: Jaffer’s preference for coreligionists. This is a classic trope of Hindu chauvinism, obsessed with the existence of a Muslim fifth column.

Nobody of any repute believes that the new coach did other than fall victim to overmighty, sticky-nosed locals, and he did attract some Twitter support, including from Kumble, who said that Jaffer had “done the right thing” in resigning.

But from Jaffer’s former comrades in the national side, nothing was heard. Why? Because, one imagines, it was as against their interests to speak up about sectarianism as it was in their interests to obediently regurgitate BJP slogans.

Some readers will be shaking their heads by now – those readers who haven’t already drifted off out of a rooted objection to cricket articles involving anything but cover drives and outswingers – about it just going to show how sport and politics should not mix.

They will be just as wrong. Sport and politics do mix, and always have: the questions revolve around in what proportion and to what ends. In India, those proportions are increasingly ugly and those ends worseningly oppressive; they should trouble every conscience.

On Thursday night, Fox Sports broadcasted a live feed of the player auction for the Indian Premier League. This is the face the BCCI likes to show the world – that of a big, benevolent sugar daddy, showering riches on the cricket world’s best. Go Maxy! Look at those lucky young quicks!

But how should we feel if the BCCI’s cosiness with the BJP warms further, if India’s cricketers become longer-term conscripts in their governments’s creepy online claque, and if its Muslim players are further singled out for victimisation? To quote Rihanna: “Why aren’t we talking about this?”

I woke up mad and have been mad all day so let’s discuss the disrespectful absurdity that was Bellamy’s death on the 100 some more. 

JRoth’s tweet really pissed me off a lot. Ultimately, he’s not wrong when he says the 100 has always been a dark show about hard choices and what people would do to survive. It’s just that I don’t think any of that played into Bellamy’s death at all. I’ve been thinking about all of the other major character deaths across the seasons and how, even the ones I hated and have massive issues with, still somehow seem more respectful to the characters than what he did to Bellamy. Keep reading for the rant:

Season 1 - Wells (and to an extent Charlotte)

Wells - Wells is a bit of a tricky one since it happened so fast and I know there are people still upset about it. But it set the tone for the show, the tone that JRoth is so proud of and referencing for Bellamy’s death. But I think you can get away with a shock value death in season one to kick things off. They also set up the situation fairly well, playing up just how harsh things are on the ark, that most of their parents had been floated. I can understand how Charlotte, who is just a child, reached that conclusion, especially with Bellamy’s maybe misguided advice (although that’s clearly not what he meant). I also don’t know that there was really a place for another presumably male lead in season one alongside Bellamy and Finn. So I get it. But also, Wells still had a chance to repair things with Clarke before he was killed. She discovered the truth and knew that he lied to protect her. He didn’t die with her hating him. It was a truncated arc, but it was something. 

Charlotte - And arguably, Charlotte’s death kind of needed to happen. There wasn’t really any way for her to continue on with them after what she’d done and at least it was her choice, however tragic it all was. 

Season 2 - Finn and Maya

Finn - As with Wells, Finn’s death is something I think you can get away with and can be viewed as edgy in an early season. It’s upping the stakes and reminding you that this is a show that will put these characters in impossible situations. And they still had a male lead left in Bellamy, plus Murphy and Jasper and even a character like Miller were rising in the ranks and there to fill in the gaps. Plus a whole host of new characters. Killing Finn was a gutsy move but one I could respect. They took him down a dark path and instead of absolving him for it because he was a main character, they made him pay for it. But unlike Bellamy, Finn realized what he did was wrong. He couldn’t live with the guilt. He couldn’t live with the way Clarke was looking at him. He knew the truce with the Grounders was important and he knew he was the key. He made the choice to give himself up. He had agency. He got to have one last escape attempt with his friends, say his goodbyes to everyone. And even still, they let him die with some amount of dignity rather than being tortured to death. And Clarke killing him worked in a way her killing Bellamy doesn’t. What he did was directly tied to her. Only she could forgive him in those final moments. There were multiple episodes of build up to this death, it was the story of the whole episode it happened in. It was expected but also a bold move for the show. 

Maya - This was a death about hard choices and survival. The audience had grown to like Maya throughout the season, seeing her stand up for what was right and going against her own people. She didn’t deserve the end she got. But Clarke and Bellamy and Monty were put in an impossible situation and it was either the lives of all their friends and family or death in a very inhumane way because the mountain never would have stopped. And the way it was set up, with us and them watching Raven and Abby being drilled into, the choice was painful but clear. And it had been building to this moment for an entire season. 

Season 3 - Lexa and Lincoln

Lexa - Lexa had arguably one of the most controversial deaths on the show. And I know there were behind the scenes reasons for it with the actress having another show to film. I don’t know how much availability she would have had. I don’t know how necessary it was to remove her from the narrative. I don’t want to get into it I will just assume for these purposes, that she had to be killed off. And I’ve always said with respect to Lexa, that I didn’t mind that they killed her off, it was how they did it. But compared to Bellamy’s death, even her controversial one feels less disrespectful to the character. It may be worse due to lesbian death tropes and that’s a larger issue, but in terms of the show story, I don’t think it was as bad. First of all, she was only a character for a season and a half. Second, her death directly affected the plot that had been hinted at all season and carried out in a major way through the rest of it. Now I hate that she died immediately after having sex by a stray bullet from a guy who should not have been holding a gun in the first place. I hate it. I would have much rather she went down fighting or stepping in front of a bullet for Clarke or something. But at least she got to finally resolve things with Clarke. They reconciled. They said they loved each other. She knew was was going to die at the end and she got to have her final moments with Clarke. Clarke got to do the whole may we meet again speech. Despite the issues, it was a beautiful moment. 

Lincoln - This death has always been the one that pissed me off the most. Again I know there were behind the scenes issues and he also had another show. Again I don’t know how much filming availability he would have or how necessary his death was. Again, let’s assume it was because people can’t just go off somewhere else for a new start on this show. But I still always hated how he went out, being executed in the mud. He should have gone down fighting at the very least. However, even more at the very least, because that’s what we’re getting into here, Lincoln did die because he was defending his people. That’s the bare minimum here but at least he had that. He was true to himself. I hated that he didn’t really get a final moment with Octavia, but hey, at least she was present. Extremely low bar but still, better than Bellamy’s death from a writing perspective. 

Season 4 - Jasper (Roan, Illian, Luna)

Jasper - Jasper’s is a sad tale. He spent two seasons basically completely depressed after the events of season two. There really wasn’t anywhere else to take his character at that point, so I understood and was ready for him to go. It made sense as an end for his character and he got to go out on his own terms and not take the spot in the bunker of someone who truly wanted to live. He got to have his final moments with Monty. It was a good end for him. 

Roan, Illian and Luna - I wouldn’t call them major characters per say, perhaps Roan and Luna but we got to know all of them fairly well. They were expendable characters for the most part but they at least got to die fighting for their people and that’s a respectable way to go out. 

Season 5 - Jaha, Monty and Harper

Jaha - Jaha was a character who did go down a sort of cult path. It probably would have been easy to kill him off in season 3 as a result of that. And if it had been a high stakes, last resort, have to kill Jaha to get to ALIE to save everyone, I could have respected that. But they didn’t. They let him survive that. They let him see the error of his ways. He spent season four determined to save his people from what he helped to unleash. He didn’t do it in the right way but even then, finally, in season 5, he was redeemed a bit, helping to maintain the peace in the bunker and helping Octavia gain control. And he had Octavia and Marcus and Abby there at his end. It was fitting. He got to say his goodbyes. 

Monty and Harper - I was very sad to say goodbye to them but they went out on their own terms. They got probably the happiest ending out of anyone on this show. They got to live their lives how they chose and be together and having a son. And they did all of that while finding a way to give their friends, their family, their people a fresh start. And they got to say goodbye, albeit through video, but it was touching and lovely. 

Season 6 - Shaw, Kane and Abby

Shaw - Shaw was another one that was killed off because he had another show, which is fine. It sucked for Raven and it was sad the character only got one season. Although considering the seasons that followed, I think he should count himself lucky really. But again, he died helping out his friends and Raven. It was a sacrifice and he knew what he was doing. 

Kane - Again, another person who had other commitments. And they did some weird body swap stuff to extend his time a little longer. But I loved that they had actual Kane there at the end anyway to say goodbye to Abby even if it wasn’t really him that she was seeing. It was a nice touch, and a better way to say goodbye to the character. He also chose to let go. It was on his terms and he got his goodbye with Abby. And there were good parallels to floating both men she loved. 

Abby - I’m not fond of the way they killed off Abby since she was basically dead once they took over her body. So that was unfortunate. But at least prior to the body swapping, she did have that last scene with Clarke where they kind of reconciled. And if I recall, she had some last moments with Jackson and Raven too. And those matter. 

Season 7 - Diyoza and Bellamy

Diyoza - By season seven, I’m honestly kind of over major character deaths. I don’t really want them. I just want to see these characters that I love survive all of the trauma of the show and find peace, but I understand that I’m never going to get that. It’s fine. I was sad to see Diyoza go, but her sacrificing herself for her daughter, for the people who became her family, kind of “for all mankind” to use a phrase I hate now, was a fitting way for her to go out since she was introduced to us as a terrorist. And she got to say her goodbyes. This is clearly an important theme for me. 

Bellamy - And then we circle back to my rage. Bellamy kind of took the path of Finn in a way, or perhaps his season 3 arc, which he didn’t really pay for so much. Not the way Finn did anyway because all of a sudden Blood must not have Blood. Plus, Pike was the rightful scapegoat for all of that. But this season saw Bellamy get caught up in yet another man’s bullshit idea of what was right. That was frustrating enough, but I guess it was somewhat in character. It’s just all the more frustrating because the Second Dawn/Shepherd nonsense is just that, nonsense. His sudden anti grounder status in season 3 were motivations that made at least some sense. He’d been fighting them since day one basically. They betrayed them at Mount Weather, which meant they had to kill everyone there, which meant he lost Clarke. And then Echo’s betrayal killed his three episode girlfriend, Gina. Plus Pike was a man he’d respected on the arc. The motivations always felt fairly thin to me since Gina was so minor, but overall, they make sense. 

This season has been all over the place. The storylines have been mostly nonsensical. The nature of the different timelines meant that there were many episodes where we had to backtrack to fill in gaps, which meant the story was basically at a standstill for the whole middle of the season. We have zero sympathy for Bill and his cult followers. They’re not interesting. The Mount Weather people were brutal and doing terrible things, but I understood their need to survive. These Second Dawn people don’t have that same motivation. They’re fine. And so much of it is driven by the flame, which Bill wants for selfish reasons along with the stupid key code. He wants to know if there’s any of his daughter in there, which goes against all his teachings and what he’s trying to suck Bellamy into. And all of that is really just to set up a spinoff no one is going to want to watch at this point anyway after all of this. It’s kind of insulting. 

And we see all of this Bellamy development in one episode late in the season and then he just betrays all his friends and family. He only shows the slightest hint of questioning. He just flat out tells Echo she doesn’t matter more than the cult. He doesn’t even have a scene with just his sister. He gets one good scene with Clarke but then is like “eh torture her it’s fine”. And then we get to this episode, where he barely interacts with his friends that he’s with. They spend most of the episode rolling their eyes at him and mocking his clothing choices. They set up the stupid sketchbook in a rushed little scene with Madi and Clarke just so in the last thirty seconds Sheidheda, who my god should be dead now (Indra I’m looking at you), can say “hey check out that book”. And Bellamy picks up this book that we’ve seen like once or twice earlier in the season that was fairly inconsequential then. We don’t even fully understand what’s in it that’s so crucial that Bellamy can’t show Bill. And that’s what Clark shoots him for? Really? And shoots to kill? Which was highly unnecessary to get her hands on that book. And then she didn’t even take the stupid book in the first place. 

So Bellamy Blake, main male lead of the series, hero and leader to his people, gets murdered by his closest most trusted friend, his person, without getting to realize that the cult stuff was bullshit, without getting any chance to redeem himself, for a book that really doesn’t even seem to matter. And he dies alone. None of his family or friends are around. No one is reciting the may we meet again speech. He never got a final scene to reconcile with his sister. He never had any real final moments with anyone else. He just disappeared in the first five minutes of the premier, showed up eleven episodes later, a brainwashed cult follower and that’s how he died. That’s frankly bullshit. And a massive disservice to his character, to Clarke’s character, to the show. And the fact that they barely had Clarke try and shake him out of his brainwashing. The fact that his friends just mocked him instead of trying to help him. It’s just not what this show was built on. It’s not. It’s one absurdity after another. It’s insulting. 

And the fact that every other character I’ve listed here at least got something, some kind of minor positive to their passing but Bellamy got none of those things?! Not fighting for a cause or a people the audience is rooting for or siding with. And no final goodbyes with the people he loves. Even Clarke only did her crying once she went through the stupid portal. I’m just mad. I should feel devastated by his death, but at least feel like he died for something. He died for nothing and that’s the saddest part of it all.

Supernatural Season 15 Spoilers Sheet, update 10/20

I’m going to have a busy Monday, so I’ll post this today. Some fun interviews this week gave us some nice info. 

I want be be 100% clear so I don’t get ‘subtumbled’ again.... this is for fun. I picked this up after Jess stopped because I like having all the info in one place. SOME OF THIS INFO WILL BE WRONG. This is not reliable information. Do not expect all this to come to pass. I am not a journalist or clairvoyant, I just like gathering stuff. If you take it too seriously, please don’t read. If you see something you think is wrong, go ahead and message me and I’ll correct. I’ll add a disclaimer to the top of the sheet so this disclaimer is always there and clear.

At the beginning of the season Dean and Cas will still have a rift. They will reconcile “at some point”. Jensen claims as of script 4 they still have friction. This has been repeated several times, from Misha as well. He indicated Dean is still mad at Cas, but Cas doesn’t feel to blame for Mary’s death. 

In an interview, Kripe indicated that the series ending would have “peace” for Sam and Dean

Not much new at the TCA’s, but it was said it is “unlikely” Jeffery Dean Morgan will be back since his last appearance was such a good end note. There were some jokes about a Castiel spin off. Hell, I’d watch.

According to Dabb, Sam and Dean are going to start to lose people who, in past seasons, we would’ve never lost — and lose them in a very real way. Our guys are going to realize there’s a certain finality, and some of the things they’ve relied on to get through the day — people, talents, things like that — they are no longer going to be able to roll out. And that’s going to throw them for a loop (Unfortunately, my guess in Rowena)

Also according to Dabb, Jack is still in the empty and “he’s not coming back in the near future” (this makes no sense. He’s on set for several episodes- interacting with the boys)

Cas’ deal with the Empty may come up later in the season.

Dabb compared Chuck and John Winchester, claiming that Dean would have to break free of “conditioning.” Also, for Jack “there have been cosmic forces fighting for his attention since he was in the womb — and that will continue. As much as this season is about Sam and Dean finding agency, it’s also about Castiel finding agency, and it’s about Jack finding agency. As always, death is never the end. It’s just part of the journey and that’s certainly true with Jack.” 

Per Variety: At the outset of the season, the “Supernatural” foursome of Dean, Sam, Castiel and Jack are split up, but Dabb notes they won’t be for long because “ultimately this is a found family, and they have deep emotional bonds” that make up the most important part of the show.

According to the MarySue and other interviews, Sam’s bullet hole will give him a connection and insight to god- like a tin can telephone string.

Per TVGuide, Leo and Dean will have a wild night out in an effort for Dean to recapture his mojo. Dean will become the lead of a band called Dean and the Impalas, which is made up of Supernatural crew. 

Osric Chau popped over to set, but he is filming on Legends of Tomorrow in the same studio. Sebastin Roche also indicated he would come by, he is filming on Batgirl. Unfortunately, neither Kevin or Balthazar will appear in this one.

Jensen posted a series of pics- one clean shaven, one vid of him shaving, and one where he    appeared to be in character with blood and dirt on his face and in Dean plaid, but with his beard… confusing- some time jump theories are developing for ep 4.

Misha and Jared filmed outside with a woman and young girl. They were running from the clown guy and a few other zombie looking creatures. CAS WAS NAKED (haha just no trench) and holding a shotgun. It could have been rehearsal and there was no camera in the clip shared by a fan which might explain the coat? Another fan said it was hot and Misha kept taking the coat off, so I’m sure this just a piece of rehearsal footage. 

Alex was filming in white sunglasses. Other set photos indicate he had makeup on his eyes making them look burnt out. There is some spec that Jack will come back blind.

According to Variety, the boys will escape the zombies in a temp shelter. They are working together, but Cas feel “detached.” Misha seems to indicate that Cas feels unfairly blamed in Mary’s death and is deeply upset about Jack. 

According to TVGuide, after they fight past the zombies, they end up in a mausoleum. They end up making a “deal with the devil” to get out. This is particularly upsetting to Cas. 

Posing as FBI agents, the boys seal off the town as a gas leak to contain the monsters temporarily. 

Dean’s time in hell is brought up

Jack’s body is being used by an entity that will help the boys get out of the zombie situation.

                HOW TO TWITTER RP (A DETAILED GUIDE)

As per request, I’m about to tell you how to roleplay in the Twitter roleplay community if you’re interested in starting.  This is just my take on Twitter roleplay, and I’m sure there are others with different methods. But I’ll try to break this down step by step with pIcTuReS because I fucking love pictures. 

TLDR; (Because im lazy)

GENERAL

Alright so if you’re unaware what twitter roleplaying is it’s roleplaying via Twitter; though you’ll find all the roleplay mains on tumblr in the ‘twitter rp’ tag.  Unlike tumblr roleplaying where you write in the third-person, for twitter roleplays you write in first-person. As it’s social media based your tweets come from a first-person perspective which means everything is ‘I’ based. However, it is not uncommon for people to roleplay out paras in the DMs just like how you’d write on tumblr.

Twitter roleplays are fast, everything is happening that day at that moment, opposed to tumblr groups where you may be doing a thread set a week ago. They’re great if you don’t have a lot of time, but still want to roleplay, or want to try out a more fast-paced environment!!

APPLYING

Honestly applying for a twitter group is pretty much the same as applying for an appless tumblr group. 

Now something that I tend to see a lot in twitter groups (at least the last time I checked the tag like three months ago MNXBXNBX and from my experience running them) groups drop into the tag but often won’t have their app up for 1-3 days. During that time they’re basically just building hype and gathering an audience, so when they do open it’ll be a swAMP of apps coming in in the first hour. If you like playing a popular faceclaim (like me and Jungkook) I find I rarely manage to snatch him up before anyone else.

But the actual app itself is normally easy, a lot of the time it’ll be requested you submit it opposed to using the ask box (since they may be a little bit too long for it) so prepare for that!!

SETTING UP AN ACCOUNT

Once you’ve been accepted it’s common to be given 6-12 hours to get your account in. You may think this is a short period of time, but you can put together a twitter account in 20 minutes.

A common theme, that I’ve never really experienced is people getting locked out of new accounts, though from my history using an email and cell phone verification can prevent this. (if you include your cell phone number go into your twitter settings and disable letting people find you from your phone number) As well as people say not mass following a bunch of people all at once also helps, so only follow 20 people at a time (I’ve mass followed 60+ blogs and have been fine)

If it’s a new account (or an old one you haven’t touched in a while), just like a new tumblr blog you may not show up in peoples notifs!! You need to be active first, which is why you may see people posting “//notifs” before things are even open for plotting. This is perfectly fine and the only reason you should tweet beforehand!! If you notice you may not be getting any replies the first night this is likely why, which is why you want to post ‘notifs’ and like some stuff first.

Usernames

When it comes to usernames (your @) people typically play off their characters first name and try to make it funny or interesting. Some examples of my own characters past and present would be:

Alliteration is a good approach!! Pick words that share the same first letter and it’ll run smoothly. Or sometimes people's names can be turned or related to other things like:

There are also common name ‘starters’ you’ll see used like:

‘STFU’DARREN

‘WTD’TYLER

‘GDI’JAKE

Really it’s very similar to how names are set up on tumblr.

Display Names

Display names are a little different than usernames, they’re found above the username and is actually what people see first. A lot of the time people will put in memes, TV characters, inside jokes, quotes, song lyrics really anything. Two examples of display names from my own accounts are:

For one character I’ve chosen a play on his name for his display name that being ‘50 Shades of Grayson’, and for the other I chose a meme, which is ‘Do you take teardrops?’. 

Really what you put in the display name can be anything.

Biographies

On every twitter account, you get a spot to put a biography this is where you can write a little blurb about your character, put in a quote, a joke, tell us their pronouns, and all that fun stuff. Though often if someone doesn’t know what to write for a bio you will see them just put “Bio for sale” as a little joke.

An example from one of my characters biographies which also includes the display name and username is as follows.

I just included a small amount of information about him, used the ‘location’ spot to include their pronouns, and then the website spot to link back to the main group.

Icons & Banners

Depending on what kind of group you’re in changes what kind of icon you may use. For instance, if you’re playing someone famous and rich you may use a shot from a photoshoot, or a magazine. But if you’re playing someone with a less glamorous job, it’s a bit more fitting to start out with a selfie or a candid picture of your muse. (Later you may break out the more HQ pictures, I find that happens a lot)

For example, if you’re in a less glamorous setting the picture on the right would be more fitting. While if you’re in a glamorous setting you can get away with more HQ pictures. (But tbh no one’s gonna question it either way, you’ll see people post photoshoot pictures for milestones a lot!!)

Banners can be anything, you can toss in a picture of a meme, an aesthetic (some people like to match their icons to their banners), if you’re in a ship it’s common for them to change their banner to a picture of the S/O.

Following the Main

Just follow them on twitter, sometimes people will send a little tweet with it like ‘// @.rpname character name has arrived’ or literally just “//@.rpname hi”. But for most all you have to do is follow the twitter main and they’ll follow you back, if it’s an unopened group they may not post a follow, but already opened groups always will!!

INTROS

Okay so you’ve gotten accepted and set up your account now it’s time for your intro. And intros change person to person, everyone has their own style!! I love graphics so mine occasionally are a little fancier, but not always!! 

It’s also common to end off your post with ‘LMS to plot’ which just means if someone likes it you DM them to plot.

IMPORTANT: Do not post tweets or your bio before the main gives the go ahead!! (Aside from the ‘notifs’ tweets)

Option One:

No bio post, you just introduce yourself in a tweet saying something along the lines of

“//Hey my names Reed, I’ll be playing Grayson and i don’t have a bio but he’s a 20 year old solo artist who’s been around here for two years. They’re pretty chill and kind of over dramatic.”

Option Two:

The lists, since a lot of people roleplay on twitter only through their phone you’ll see a lot of bios posted through a note app where they write down some general info, sometimes in lists, sometimes in blurbs. It’s not uncommon for people to post their characters app in it.

Option Three:

As someone into graphics a lot of the time I find myself being extra and just making pretty intros. This is not at all required or expected, but if you want to do it, you can.

PLOTTING

Plotting goes along with intros, it’s extremely common for someone to have a wanted connections list, or just say ‘LMS to plot”. Which means you’ll go to the DMs to plot with them. 

But there are also a decent amount of people who prefer chem over plotting, it all depends on what kind of person you are. 

TWEETING

If the main as given the go-ahead to start tweeting then it’s time to think of your first tweet. Now as I stated at the very beginning of this, twitter roleplaying is done from a first-person perspective (with the exception of if you para in the DMs but we’ll talk about that later.)

When it comes to OOC tweets make sure to always start them with slashes ‘//’ (one or two whichever you prefer), this is just the way of showing it’s OOC.

A lot of people tweet for their characters, like they would for themselves. This is very common in twitter groups, everyone puts a little part of themselves in their muses. But it’s also good to find ways to separate them so you aren’t playing to OOC. As it’s not uncommon for people playing more of a self-insert to feel attacked over IC drama that is not OOC, just since they’ve invested so much of their personal self in them. I personally often play characters opposite to my personality IRL to avoid this, however, if you roleplay and put a bit of yourself into the character there’s nothing wrong with that!!

Your first tweet will always feel like the hardest, which is why I typically choose to reply to other people first to take the pressure off before posting my own. But this can really be anything you could say what they had for breakfast, post something funny, or just say ‘hi’, it’s honestly up to you there’s no wrong way to start.  You can even post a selfie, typically most people do sometime in their first 100 tweets.

REPLY TO OTHER CHARACTERS TWEETS

This is so important, because one of the most common things I see is people who do not reply to other characters, but expect people to reply to them and then they start saying the group isn’t inclusive because they don’t have a lot of threads. But the first few days the dash is always super busy, meaning a lot of tweets will get lost in it, so don’t get sad if some of your tweets don’t get replies, not all of them will. So make sure you’re replying to other people, that’s how you build connections and stay included in the group!! If you ever see anyone posting to RPTs or sending anons to the main saying things are cliquey and you’re in your first 1-5 days, almost 100% of the time it is because they are not replying to enough things themselves!! 

If you’re active, posting your own tweets, and replying to tweets you can get above 100 tweets in your first night. (I’ve gotten 500-600 on the first night before)

You may see a lot of ‘LMS for a DM’ posts too, which just means if you like it, they’ll send you a DM.

SUPPORT OTHER CHARACTERS

Do you see that selfie on the TL?? Go like and retweet it!! Even post a reply on it if you’re really feeling it this is a fast way to make friends. Also, retweet any milestone posts you see posted!! It’s always nice to get support on your own character, which means you need to do it for others.

Also you should get out of your comfort zone, roleplay with faceclaims you may not normally roleplay with, or characters you don’t know.

In the end you'll come to understand more how things work as time goes on, and typically very fast.

DIRECT MESSAGES (DMS)

There are two types of general messages in the DMs (well three, but I’m giving the third its own category)

The first is OOC messages, used to plot, or communicate with your partner. Much like OOC posts on the timeline, you want to always start this out with ‘//’.

Now for IC messages. These are written just as you would write for DMing as yourself, the only difference is you’re doing it IC.  So here’s a fast example I made between two of my own characters to show you how it works. It really is very casual, and sometimes you’ll DM with people everyday, other times it may die out, it’s all about character chemistry.

PARAS IN DIRECT MESSAGES

So paras still do exist in twitter roleplays!! They just happen in the DMs opposed to on the timeline. Now there are two different ways of acting stuff out in the DMs and one of them is the para way (my personal preference) or some people kind of just talk it, which I’ll also explain.

When it comes to para’s, I’m not going to lie the most common times I see them happen is with ships, writing out dates or smut (no smut if yoURE A MINOR). Which you may lead up to happening through messages or hint at it, and then you just ask your partner

“//hey do you want to para this?” and typically they’ll say yes, sometimes people might be too busy. If this is the case you can just headcanon it OOC!! Which just means you discuss what may have happened.

So if you’re wondering what a para may look like, it could be something like this:

Now for the ‘talk’ version, it’s a little different, and I’m personally not a big fan of it, but if it’s my partner's preference I’ll do it. And basically you don’t write out the actions, you just hint at them in what they’re saying. 

So an example of what that looks like is the following:

OTHER IMPORTANT SHIT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT

Milestones: Milestones are when you hit a big number of tweets, for example every hundred tweets. People often celebrate by posting pictures, or videos. Though I find once I pass 1K tweets I don’t do milestones for every hundred, but I at least do them for every 500.

Indirects: An indirect is when someone mentions your characters name on the timeline, this means that when you search the name and hit ‘from people you follow only’ you can see it. These are great for selfie captions, so if you see someone asking for an indirect, give them one!!  An example of one would be if someone said ‘grayson is the wORST’, since they used ‘grayson’ I can find it in my indirects. When using this for a selfie caption you typically credit the person who said it with their @ for example if I made it my characters selfie caption I’d format it as ‘@.characterurl: Grayson is the wORST’.  Notice the period to separate the @ from the username? This is so they aren’t actually are tagged and get stuck with your notifications for that post.

Quirk: Some people like quirk, some people don’t. Basically, it’s characters who post memes constantly, make a joke out of everything, and are just very extra. I find that a nice middle ground is the best place to be.  Don’t let that be the only thing you post, and don’t be too quirky in serious situations. But a little quirk never hurt anyone!!

Tag up on characters on the dash (if you see two people arguing don’t throw your character in, it’s overwhelming)

Turn people against other players characters. Even if you don’t like them, it’s not right to isolate someone like that.

Go to RPT blogs with your problems instead of the admins. You can’t solve problems that way, if you talk to the admins, they’ll try to help.  RPT blogs can’t, which makes you part of the problem.

The Financial Realities of Going Viral

I did bit of an experiment over on my Patreon page this week. After the image in this post (which I’d originally done for a freelance gig in 2013) went viral at the end of October, I began tracking all the direct income that came my way over the following month. This timeline represents my best knowledge of how much a single image has earned for me over the last four years. 

I’d encourage you to read to the end to understand that even if the money isn’t what you might expect, there’s a bigger plan at play.

Here's a little financial timeline of the Art of the Sailor image.

February, 2013: I get a request to do an illustration gig for the Vancouver Maritime Museum. They're running an exhibit on the history of tattoos and scrimshaw and want a life-size sailor poster to show off some popular tattoo choices. We have a great time collaborating and eventually come up with the image you see in this post. I get paid $192.50 for my work on the poster. I am charging $35 an hour.

March, 2014: I get emails from curators at the Los Angeles and San Diego Maritime Museums, both wanting to exhibit the poster. It's a cool thing to say your work has been featured in multiple maritime museums! I do not receive payment, mostly because I like boat people and am happy to have them use my art, but also because I'm inexperienced and unsure of whether I can ask for a licensing fee.

June, 2014: I sell the original artwork of the illustration (just the sailor, sans text) to a fan for $125. (I go back and forth on selling originals vs. clinging to them "until they're worth something," but that's a discussion for another time.)

July, 2015: I pay Twin Ravens Press to produce a letterpress print version as a fancy reward for the Baggywrinkles Kickstarter. We make 100 of them. The prints are a fairly popular reward choice, but don't move at conventions. $40, while reasonable for a two-color letterpress print, turns out to be a bit more than people at comics shows are interested in paying.

2015-2017: I sell 12 of the letterpress prints over the following two years, bringing in a total of $480. Once it's clear that my audience isn't clamoring for them, I try out regular laser print versions for a few shows in 2017, bringing in $120.

Occasionally someone will point out that a military or naval fan page on Facebook has shared the image (without crediting me or linking to my work), garnering thousands of reactions and comments. This is frustrating, but also just the cost of doing business online. I don’t give it much thought.

December, 2016: I list the image in my print-on-demand shop on INPRNT and sell three prints over the next six months, netting $10 per print. (INPRNT takes a substantial cut off the $20 price point for handling production and shipping fulfillment.)

October 21st, 2017: Here’s where things get interesting. Boing Boing, a website that receives about 10 million pageviews a month, features the illustration in a blog post, pointing specifically to the letterpress prints.

The author makes sure to link to both the letterpress prints and the print-on-demand version of the image featured on INPRNT, since the letterpress run is limited and likely to sell out. (Dear Lord, may all bloggers be as fabulous and diligent as the staff at Boing Boing. Amen.)

October 23rd, 2017: My Modern Met picks the story up from Boing Boing. They have 2.3 million Facebook fans.

October 25th, 2017: Pat, the head honcho at my store with Buyolympia, emails to tell me there's been a run on the letterpress prints and they've sold out and do I have any more. I do not. We get some print-on-demand editions up in his shop as well, since I'm trying to migrate all my operations over there anyway.

October 27th, 2017: Atlas Obscura (985k Facebook fans) picks up the story from My Modern Met. The next day George Takei posts about it. He has 10 million followers on Facebook, give or take a couple hundred thousand. The post gets 16 thousand reactions and five thousand comments. Many of my friends tell me I am now famous.

October 21st-31st, 2017: 23 prints of various sizes sell on INPRNT after all the press, netting me $191.50. FINALLY, that Famous Person Money I’ve heard so much about.

November 3rd, 2017: Commander Chris Hadfield, the first Canadian to walk in space, shares the image on social media. He has 2.28 million Twitter followers. The tweet (never mind the versions posted to Facebook, Tumblr, and Instagram) gets 1,700 likes and 572 retweets.

November 6th, 2017: I receive my sales report for the previous two weeks of commerce in the Buyoly shop. We sold 46 on-demand sailor prints, netting $345, and 7 letterpress prints (the last of the bunch!) bringing in $210 before cost of production. (I'm not factoring in the $243 brought in from other items sold in this period, but some of those sales may have come from people who initially showed up to buy sailor prints.)

November 20th, 2017: My second monthly payment from Buyoly comes in. The rush has tapered off and we’ve sold 9 more prints, bringing in $67.50.

SO: To date, including the money I was paid to produce the artwork, I have made $1,761.50 from this image. Not bad! Notably: $814 of that came after Boing Boing decided to feature the art with a proper link pointing people to my shop. There are a bunch of factors to consider here.

I am delighted at all the press this piece has garnered, and of course very grateful to Boing Boing for conscientiously sourcing their material. It can, as this has hopefully demonstrated, have a very real impact on the livelihood of the people involved.

But I also think it's important to share these numbers as a reminder that just because you've seen someone's work shared on a popular platform (or by a popular person), doesn't mean they're automatically set for life. It does, however, mean they might be making a couple hundred bucks more than they usually do in a given month, and when you're trying to make it as a freelancer that makes all the difference in the world.

I was also just genuinely curious about how much this little illustration job from so long ago had paid dividends over the last five years. You never know what's going to happen to your work in the long haul, and it's always, always worthwhile to get a high-quality file for making prints, just in case.

Of the (probably) millions of people who have now seen this piece of art, 85 have actually made the jump to buying the physical object. Now we could look at that and get really depressed about conversion figures and feel like we’re never going to be able to convert online traffic into sustainable revenue, but here's the thing: this is all part of the plan.

Maybe a few of those millions of people will remember my name the next time my work gets the spotlight. And maybe once they've seen my work a couple times, they'll visit my website. And maybe the fifth time they visit the website they'll buy a book, or recognize me at a show, or start following me on Twitter. And if they like the books, or what I say on the internet, maybe they’ll start coming back every year. And then I'll feel comfortable saying I'm famous, at least to those people.

This is how fanbases are really made—not in viral posts, but in the microscopic accumulation of many, many chance interactions and moments of recognition over time.

The best part about being in it for the long haul is getting to see those moments come home to roost.

Corona Crunchers: How Covid 19 dashboards helping people make sense of the pandemic

April 28, 2020. It’s 4 am in India. It’s been over an hour since the millennials running covid19india. org last updated their dashboard tracking the pandemic outbreak in the country. Many of the site’s 90,000-odd Twitter followers are frantically tagging it in their tweets.

Vijendra Rana sounds restless. “Uttarakhand update not good,” he tweets to @covid19indiaorg.

“The district-wise data (in Gujarat) is not updating. Only the active cases are increasing,” posts Kabir Khan.

“Please put up a column for doubling rate and five-daysmoving-average of active cases. The picture will be clearer. Won’t take too much to code,” suggests Diptendu Bhatacharya in his tweet.

It’s half past 4 now. The home page still says, “Last updated at 3:01 am.” Rana, Khan and Bhatacharya barely have 100 Twitter followers between them, but they mirror the sentiments of thousands in their anxiety and inquisitiveness in these Covid-19 days. Over the last six weeks, dashboards like covid19india. org, covindia.com and againstcovid19.com/india have become the first port of call for people looking for up-todate data on the outbreak in India.

Among those tracking global numbers, the likes of ourworldindata.org/coronavirus, covid19stats.live and ncov2019.live have gained traction with millions of users worldwide. From ordinary folk to policymakers, corporates to research firms and even government agencies, many are actively seeking authentic information on Covid-19’s impact on human lives — to stay updated and avoid misinformation-induced panic.

“They are the best source of data available right now since the government doesn’t give granular data in one place,” says Sid Rupani, 36, a Delhi-based supply chain consultant, who actively follows two dashboards for professional and personal reasons.

Without the dashboards, Vaidehi Tandel won’t be able to do half her work. Tandel is an economist with the Mumbai based think tank IDFC Institute. Her job requires processing data across several metrics in real-time, in order to give inputs to governments and other stakeholders. “Having access to these dashboards eliminates one giant step in our process as we don’t have to approach individual government bodies for data anymore,” says the 32-year-old Mumbaikar.

In Delhi, Aparna Jain follows dashboards to assess whether we are being responsible citizens and practising social distancing. She tracks the numbers to ensure that we are not putting pressure on our healthcare system. “I’m not a data scientist, just an involved citizen,” says the corporate leadership coach.

Created by self- or peer-motivated volunteers across different age-groups and disciplines, these dashboards collate data round the clock from different government agencies, health institutions and other reliable sources, and present them in simple, easy-to-understand infographics. Most dashboards are built as open-source platforms so that anyone can access their code to build one for their region.

Kerala-focused Covid19kerala.info, which went live on March 22, adapts the framework of a dashboard created by a few techies for Japan in February this year. Most of them rely on the same big names in the software industry — like GitHub and Netlify — to host their sites, maps, etc. Given the special nature of these projects, many tech companies offer their services pro bono, bringing the cost of running dashboards down to zero in most cases. The creators are also finding solutions to the same problem, more or less. Yet, every dashboard has a different origin story.

Covid19kerala.info, for instance, was cofounded by Jijo P Ulahannan, a physicist based in the state, along with Nishad Thalhath, a metadata researcher based in Japan. “During the 2018 floods in Kerala, Nishad told me that Japan keeps a metadata repository for every calamity. He encouraged me to document the flood’s impact so that future generations can be better prepared for a crisis like this,” recalls Ulahannan.

Coronavirus: Case fatality rates by age

( Case fatality rate (CFR) is calculated by dividing the total number of confirmed deaths due to COVID-19 by the number of confirmed cases. Two of the main limitations to keep in mind when interpreting the CFR: 1)many cases within the population are unconfirmed due to lack of testing 2)some indiviuals who are infected will eventually die from the disease, but are still alive at the time of recording)

Two years later, when Covid hit Kerala, Thalhath — already exposed to the Japan dashboard by then — referred it to Ulahannan to develop it further. Ulahannan took his words literally. Shane Reustle, an American software developer based in Tokyo, who built the Japan dashboard called covid19japan.com with a bunch of design and tech partners, tells ET Magazine: “The team in Kerala took our code, changed it to their needs and made it better. Then they pushed us to adapt those improvements as well.”

In the case of covindia.com, the founders — Achal Agrawal, who teaches at Mahindra Ecole Centrale college of engineering in Hyderabad, and his student Raghav NS — were planning to visualise data on India’s map for a hackathon scheduled in the first week of April. The hack they eventually devised was to visualise district-wise growth of the pandemic on India’s map. The site gets roughly 30,000 page views per day.

Now, these two dashboards are run by a team of about 20 people each. The millennials of covid19india.org, who refuse to share their identity, claim they have had help from at least 1,000 volunteers since going live in mid-March. In the vast tech universe, though, Covid dashboard creators are a tiny community. Even if they haven’t met each other, they know of each other. And they have a mutual admiration society of sorts.

Agrawal of covindia. com acknowledges the user interface of covidout.in. It was a popular dashboard, he notes, that abruptly shut down in late March. Rohan Daxini, founder of covidout.in, attributes the shutdown to domain provider and registrar issues. Instead of reviving the site on another server, Daxini chose to help others who had come up with their dashboards.

“It was not a competition. If others were doing great work, we must acknowledge and offer help,” says the founder of Mumbaibased software firm Kiprosh. Paying Agrawal’s gratitude forward, Daxini praises programmer Zhi Peng Lee’s dashboard for Singapore that initially inspired his layout.

On March 31, Lee, founder of UpCode Academy, created againstcovid19.com/india along the same lines as the Singapore one. While most other dashboards use dark backgrounds and lots of reds and greens for text, againstcovid19.com/india uses tints (light colours).

“It also does a deep dive into data while keeping the information hierarchy intact,” says Himanshu Khanna, founder of Delhi-based design consultancy Sparklin. It starts with the most essential piece of information — total cases, active cases, deceased and discharged. “As you scroll down, the information keeps getting more nuanced, flush with pie charts and bar graphs,” says Khanna.

There is something unique to the design philosophy of each of these dashboards. “Having an option to switch to Malayalam instead of assuming everyone can understand English is a plus for the Kerala dashboard, for instance,” says Rasagy Sharma, a Bengaluru-based designer, who specialises in information visualisation.

Covindia.com uses annotations to humanise data, like “Be safe” for the number of cases, “Be calm” for recovered patients and “Stay informed” for the number of deaths.

Delhi’s Jain has been following a ProPublica dashboard for New York City since her brother lives there. This one visualises data across the city’s 100-plus zip codes on a map. The dashboard highlights the uncertainty factor attached to all Covid data. “Only a minority of people who show symptoms are tested, so the actual number of positive cases is higher,” reads the text under every zip code’s Covid summary.

This tiny dashboard stands tall amid many that leave things open to interpretation. Explaining the meaning and implication of each aspect can help avert multiple narratives among readers, says Sharma.

Lee’s India dashboard does that to an extent, notes Sparklin’s Khanna, by adding percentage distributions next to all essential figures. It instantly shows that while 3-4% of total cases have resulted in deaths, over 25% have recovered. Another way to do it, says Sharma, is by showing cases per thousand of the population in a containment zone, as opposed to painting the whole town red on the map. This is about people dying, communities and industries suffering. Understanding the ethical responsibility of design is critical here, he adds.

Ulahannan, co-creator of the Kerala dashboard, agrees that there’s ample room for contextualisation of the Covid data. However, he points out that these are early days.

Data scientists and data acquisition managers are struggling with the unavailability of complete data, or its availability in an unstructured manner, on most days. There’s an ongoing debate on the use of red to determine containment zones, and on using a dark background for the site as a whole — although the covindia.com team makes the case for darker background being easier on the eyes. Adapting foreign frameworks isn’t a cakewalk either.

In Japan, a Covid-19 patient’s hospital ID can be mapped without violating their privacy, says Ulahannan. “We had to be mindful of how to anonymise data to protect people’s privacy in the Indian context,” he says.

Things haven’t been smooth-sailing for Reustle in Japan, too. “When we started, our biggest challenge was that the government was releasing data in Japanese, with no visual indications.” Before they could analyse the data, they had to translate it. Another problem facing many dashboards is the redaction of numbers. Reustle recalls an incident where certain people wrongly tested positive, “so they had to redact that data at once”.

An even bigger challenge: as numbers go up, dashboards can cause panic than reduce it. At a life stage where everyone is likely surrounded by more numbers than living beings, it is easier to go down the dashboard rabbit hole.

“From a professional aspect, you may start seeing these numbers and trends with fascination,” says Rupani from Delhi. “Once you zoom out a little, you realise the actual human toll it is taking. It can be emotionally challenging,” he adds.

In the beginning, Rupani spent three hours browsing these dashboards. Now he checks them once a day, for a total of 30 minutes. Constantly updating these numbers affects the creators, too. At one point, the influx of cases got to Agrawal and Raj Narayanan, a designer in the team.

“It made us so anxious that we felt we had caught the virus. So we got ourselves tested,” says Agrawal. These days, the team tries to keep the mood light on their 20-plus Slack channels to better cope with disturbing moments.

“I hope no one else sees those chats though,” he adds. After the call, Agrawal shares a screenshot of one such chat in confidence. Truly, unlike the Covid-19 data, some things are better left undisclosed.

A cow's fat which is two to three days old

One day, I went to a butcher shop near my house to buy some flower beds. We have a picnic in 28 days, so I'm thinking of buying it in advance and aging it at home. Originally, we wanted to buy Grade 2, but we only sell 1 + to local butcher shops. It was a month ago when I asked about the date of the slaughter when I heard it was a month ago. That means they've been maturing for a month. I am afraid to buy this meat because I have to mature for another 28 days.

But if you look at it, the color of the fat is white as in Photo 1. The local color of the cattle is as white as a freshly slaughtered one month ago. And I found out what happened, and the butcher took the cow, divided it up, and then froze it all. And then they took it out at the right time and sold it. It's a way to extend the shelf life, but this way it serves you meat that is relatively lean while at the same time serving you meat that hasn't matured at all.

When I asked him when he got it out of the freezer, he took it out today. If so, the aging period of the meat must be calculated from the time it is thawed out of the freezer, not from the day of the slaughter. As I mentioned before, beef ripening is suitable for 20 to 30 days. Buy this meat now and age it for 28 days. #. Beef purchase and home-aged tips

As I wrote earlier, the lighter the color of the ox and the closer it is to white, the less old it has been since it was killed. That means it's not mature at all. These days, supermarkets and butcher shops often sell mature (five-to-fifteen) products, but as the example says, some meat shops in the countryside or neighborhoods either sell it right away rather than the concept of aging and sell it right away, or keep it in the freezer to increase the shelf life and then take it out.

The ox or chuk, fresh from the slaughter, is said to be fresh, and is actually a tough and hard cow. Whatever happens, the living thing goes into rigor mortis for a period of time immediately after death, during which time it is hard enough to reach its teeth. For this reason, meat restaurants near the cattle slaughterhouses tend to slice the meat thin.

If you sell aged meat for 20 to 30 days, you can buy the meat and eat it right away.If it doesn't reach 20 to 30 days as of the end of the first official day, you should ask for a vacuum-packaging package and ripen it at home to finish the 20 to 30 days. Specific methods are as follows.

1) When buying beefRequest a vacuum-packaging. (MART 'S DIFFICIENT, MART) You can do it at the butcher's.)

2) Beef units are recommended for 1 kg or more at least one geun, and are vacuumed in whole without slicing.

Record-breaking temperatures and months of severe drought have fuelled a series of massive bushfires across Australia. Although recent cooler conditions have brought some respite, the states of New South Wales and Victoria are once again braced for the return of severe fire danger - with high temperatures and gusty winds forecast over the next few days. Some 27 people have so far been killed - including four firefighters - and an estimated 10 million hectares (100,000 sq km or 15.6 million acres) of bush, forest and parks across Australia has burned. I estimate recovery will cost $100 billion The bushfire emergency that began in Australia in September 2019 and has worsened steadily since then has already cost at least 24 lives, destroyed thousands of homes and other buildings and burned millions of acres of forest and farmland. And the economic costs are only just beginning to emerge. The Australian government, which only a month ago was treating the crisis as a state-level rather than national problem, has announced an emergency package of 2 billion Australian dollars (about $1.4 billion USD). While it is promising that the government has finally abandoned the fiction that such disasters can be managed by state governments alone, this is just a drop in the bucket. When environmental and health costs are taken into account, I estimate that it will probably cost the country more than 100 billion Australian dollars (about $70 billion USD). In a country of just 25 million people, the impact of the fires will loom much larger than the effects of Hurricane Sandy, which hit 12 US states. So far, insurance claims arising from the fires have totaled 700 million Australian dollars (about $500 million USD) alone. But this will be a tiny fraction of the total damage to private property. Many properties are uninsured or underinsured and many of those affected haven't even found out whether their homes have survived, let alone filled out claims. And, of course, we are only part of the way through the bushfire season. With 2,000 homes damaged or destroyed, along with vehicles, fences, farmland and commercial forests, the final damage to private property is likely to be between 5 billion and 10 billion Australian dollars (between $3.5 billion and $7 billion USD). As a comparison, the much less damaging Queensland floods and hurricane of 2011 produced insurance claims of more than 3.6 billion Australian dollars ($2.5 billion USD), many of them coming in weeks or months after the disaster took place. Damage to public infrastructure, including roads, bridges, electricity and water supply systems will be of a similar magnitude. The need to rebuild to a higher standard in preparation for future disasters will add greatly to the cost. Again, the Queensland experience, where capital expenditures of 5.6 billion Australian dollars (about $3.9 billion USD) was raised in part through a special nationwide levy, provides a guide. The bushfires have effectively wiped out the tourist season for much of Southeastern Australia and have dealt a huge blow to its international image as a tourist destination, worth $20 billion a year in international income. All sorts of other activities have also been affected, as dangerous smoke levels have made outdoor work unsafe and closed many offices. Less tangible, but equally severe, are the health effects of the crisis. Exposure to high levels of air pollution is likely to lead to hundreds, or perhaps thousands, of premature deaths. Using standard health valuation measures employed in Australia, which estimate a cost of 4.2 million Australian dollars per life lost (about $3 millon USD), the implied cost will be in the billions. Perhaps largest of all, but impossible to measure, is the destruction of natural ecosystems. It has been estimated that 480 million native animals have died, and whole species have almost certainly been wiped out. The results of billions of dollars spent on preserving these ecosystems have been wiped out in just a few weeks.

It started spring of 2016 when the complete seasons 1 through 7 rewatch facilitated by the fabulous Pellegrinaleoni was ending.  She had managed to host most of our rewatches twice a week and was rightfully tired and suggested that someone else might have an idea for another rewatch.   For some reason, I had the crazy notion that I would like to give it a try.  After a few conversations with her that were a great benefit to me, I decided to host a once a week rewatch of favorite episodes.  

The idea was to pick favorites from each season and make it a group vote to decide what we would watch.  First, I thought about limiting it to the top 3 per season but soon realized that it was too small a number.  I came up with the number five as a reasonable limit and thought about 35 top episodes.  However, in the course of discussions with a few folks I realized that some episodes were going to be practically universally requested: Blue Bird and the finale Brown Shag Carpet/ White Orchids.  Later, the Pilot was added to this list and the Great 38 was born.  

The voting turned out to be very interesting.  In setting up the vote, I explained that each person was to send me their list of favorite episodes in order of appeal and the order was weighted accordingly.  Thus, the first choice received 5 points, the second 4 points, the third 3 points, the second 2 points, and the fifth got 1 point.  I put together an Excel spreadsheet to maintain the submissions and tallied the votes after the voting deadline.  The results, in order of popularity, (NOT the order we rewatched them) are as follows.

In the event of a tie, such as was the case in season 3 with Cackle Bladder Blood and Ball of Fire when both had the same number of points, the number of individual votes was the tiebreaker.  In the spirit of fair play, I cast my votes as the first voter so I would not be influenced by anyone.  Because of this, I was as surprised as anyone else by some selections. Some episodes (beyond the three given ones) are almost universal favorites like Strawberries & Cream, Red Badge, and Little Yellow House.  However, I also discovered that we are an interesting group with a diverse way of deciding what makes a “favorite.”  For example, I alone voted for Red Rum, Red Scare, and Bloodstream.  Thus, when someone questioned why something was not on our watch list I could only shrug my shoulders.  

I had a lot of fun putting this together and given the complete change in my life that occurred last summer, this rewatch was an outlet for my creative energy.  However, having said that, I hope that someone else will at some point come up with an idea for a rewatch and volunteer to facilitate it.  I have no idea how Pellegreinaleoni did this two days a week; once a week while unemployed kept me sufficiently busy.  For those who are unaware, facilitating for me meant that I had to watch the week’s episode in advance, create an invitation or reminder for the rewatch, and make screen grabs.  An episode with an average run time of 42 minutes usually took at least two hours to watch because I had to stop and start it so many times to create the JPEGs.  I averaged about 30 an episode with my lowest being 16.  That low occurred the same week I had to go out of town for a few nights for two interviews.  Sadly, I didn’t get either job.  Many episodes I had at least 40 and for the Pilot and the finale I had over 100.  While someone else may have software that would make this process move along much faster, my old (and I do mean OLD) laptop did the best it could.  The best part of this is that I now have a wealth of material to use for collages and other activities.  

In closing, I hope that any of you that participated either through lurking or active tweeting had as much fun as I did.  I tried to keep it a fun atmosphere where discussion was encouraged and differences of opinion were voiced in an adult and rational manner.  I learned so much from you all and I will treasure this experience.  Who knows?  Maybe someday I’ll create another challenge.  For now, I plan to rewatch episodes I haven't had a chance to see in a while and probably post some pictures and comments as go.  I hope you will, too.

Moments I have witnessed intense KnB fans in Japan

Upon request here’s my post of personal experiences I’ve seen or been in that show how Japanese KnB (mainly Akashi) fans are that you probably won’t see too often back in your home country.  *If you are one of these fans, I’m not saying stop doing it or you shouldn’t do it, but just be responsible and don’t neglect other priorities and don’t inconvenience others...and be reasonable. Also these are things I’m not used to seeing so for me it’s quite eyebrow-raising. Thanks. 

Fans with multiple and intense ita-bags (bags with character merch usually dedicated to 1-2 characters)

Many people cover every inch of their bags with badges/straps of a character and I’ve seen some intense Akashi ones. Also they many have duplicates of the same badges and I’ve seen people who have like THREE bags they take to J-world or an event.  *(I also have my own itabag and I know other Tumblr users have their own as well. And I can say, those are normal and I wouldn’t classify them as the ‘crazy’ bags I’ve seen)

Fangirl logic in Japan as said by someone in an interview: The more you spend on rare merch of a character you like the more you love them, or something. Hence why girls collect 50 duplicates or more

Girl spending over $600 on Akashi Newstyle badges

Last year they had NewStyle badges which were from a lottery/kuji at certain arcades. You could choose who you wanted so buy the time I got up to try all the Akashi ones were gone. The Akashi badges in particular were VERY expensive on auction. A two-badge set went on average at the time like $60. It would’ve been cheaper but there was this ONE girl (same girl because the username was the same) who kept BUYING THEM ALL OR WINNING ALL THE AUCTIONS. I had the auction pages saved (since I was keeping an eye on them while I was bidding) and I calculated the total of the ones she won and it went over $600....

I eventually got my own set for $90........

Also pretty sure I’ve seen the acutal girl because she had like 40 New Style badges on her bag and these weren’t common badges compared to the usual KnB ones from J-World......she also had 3 intense Akashi bags and I see her frequently..

Fans spending TONS of money to get a high rank in Cross Colors.

There is no hack or cheat people literally do spend hundreds of dollars to get a high rank for a 5 star Avatar in Cross Colors. I’ve seen the same people try one event after another so it’s not like they save up for months and then go all out. Fans do this for other game apps too like Ensemble Stars.

I just wanna say first of all, even his hands are gloved and since it’s a mask, he can’t talk. Think of it like Mickey at Disneyland or any other mascot

I’ve seen a girl actually trying to strike a conversation with him and all he could do was stare back and nod and gesture her to move on because she was holding up the line.

I’ve seen another girl jumping up and down in front of him showing off how she got the Akashi movie clearfile. Again not much of a reaction from him. 

When I got a picture with him, there were girls peeping at him from behind the backdrop like some stalkers.....it was really unsettling....

When he walks around J-World, he ALWAYS WITHOUT FAIL has a herd of fangirls following him trying to take pictures of him, and I know some of those girls are J-World regulars and already have a pic with him. One time the guy was going back to the staff area but they had to do one last round of pictures because the girls would’t leave him alone. 

This is probably a thing in multiple fandoms and even back at home but KnB stageplay tickets selling out within 10 min. And a lot of those tickets were bought merely to just be resold at a much higher price. And that was just for the first play.

People going to Jump Festa and sleeping overnight in line when you’re not supposed to but guess the staff allowed it anyway....I went at 3:30am so I could get a shot at the limited KnB Merch and I barely got them...

I’ll also add people buying KnB merch not even for themselves but for the sake of selling. How do I know? For example the Oreshi Puni Puni doll is limited to only two per customer and then I see on auction the same day one seller selling two of them. Unless they asked their friend to pick it up too so they could sell for money but I feel that’s still pretty bad and unfair to those who actually wanted it.Also seen people sell like 40 KnB Jump Festa keychains...which by the way sold out.  

GIrls (specifically girls) shove you and knock you over to get in line for the goods even when staff members are there demanding you line up calmly and no running. I had one girl fully jab me in my arm with her shoulder to get ahead of me. 

Last year’s Jump Festa had an exclusive Akashi wall scroll that sold out in less than 30 min despite the limit they set per person. The original price was about $32. I found one on auction for $100 and bought it right away. Sad thing is, that was the cheapest. Later when everyone else decided to put their own scrolls up for auction they went super high like $300-500 if I remember. I remember one auction it was a fight between three buyers and then it got down to two buyers and they kept outbidding each other and the auction got extended for 2 extra hours because they wouldn’t stop bidding. (Yahoo auctions only end if there are no bids in the last 5 min otherwise they automatically get extended for another 10 min). Ending price was at almost $700, or if not it WAS $700 depending on the currency exchagne rate.

My friends and I were at J-World just chilling at a table resting and these two Japanese girls walk by and one of them points at my Akashi bag and shows her friend. They weren’t in my line of sight but my friends who could see them from our table said that the other girl sat down and started pulling out ALL of her Easter Akashi merch ranging from badges, straps, putting on her decked out Easter Akashi lanyard, and displaying them on their table. I was just sitting there talking and my bag was just casually on a chair because we had space for it....I wasn’t trying to start anything. And it was very clear that she had more merch than me anyway so I don’t get why it was necessary to show that she is clearly the “winner.” 

Jealous fans who won’t stop staring at you

Example of this was when my friend and I were at a KnB Cafe. There was a mini game the staff did halfway through where you try to match the same picture as them and if you’re in the top 5 (I think) you get a special sparkly holograph coaster of a random character. My friend managed to be one of the lucky ones but the coaster you get is random. My friend luckily drew the capsule that had the Akashi coaster so she gave it to me. Once someone picks that capsule the staff doesn’t put it back in the box so in other words no other winner can get an Akashi coaster. One Akashi fan across the room kept creepily staring at me after that because her friend also won a coaster but because the staff came to us first, her friend had zero chance of getting Akashi. That girl kept staring at me for awhile and it was quite unsettling....

Last year for Valentine’s, the Jump Store had a lottery campaign where if you tweeted a picture of a Valentine’s Card you got from them and tagged it with whatever hashtag it was, then you can be entered for a KnB poster lottery of your choice. One girl literally made an account just for this on twitter and spammed every hour a post so she could try to get the Akashi poster. Now that’s not the worst part. Each post had some sort of sentence of her declaring her love for Akashi and how she loved him more than anyone else in the world (she actually said ‘world’). How she only thought of him ever since she “met” him 3 years ago. She even jokingly said as a reference to Akashi’s phrase, “If I don’t get that Akashi poster I won’t forgive you Jump Store lol” at least I hope it was a joke. 

If you just google image search 赤司部屋 (Akashi room) you can see how dedicated some fans can be into decorating every inch of their room with Akashi merch....literally every inch....though I’ve seen rooms like that for other characters too and other series. 

You’d think fans would be happy that you like the same character as you right? Or everybody in Japan is nice? Well, sadly for Akashi fans that’s not the case a lot of the time. When it comes to showing off merch on twitter fans seem pretty chill but when it comes to actually getting the goods and in person, well.....good luck....

So that’s my report of personal experiences of crazy KnB fans within my 3 years of Japan. I really wished I was making these up but I don’t think I ever could. Here’s to hoping none of you guys have to experience these XD;

Indian Industry Leaders Step Up With Donations And Free Services Amid Sweeping COVID-19 Lockdown

As the coronavirus pandemic spreads across India with 723 confirmed cases and seventeen deaths, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a 21-day national lockdown on Tuesday evening. All of the country’s 1.3 billion people need to stay inside their homes for three weeks beginning Wednesday. The government is taking drastic steps to stop the spread of COVID-19. India’s business community, for its part, is also taking action.

From pledging money and manufacturing might to giving away services free of charge, here’s a look at what India’s captains of industry are doing to fight the pandemic.

The country’s richest man Mukesh Ambani has announced the multi-pronged plan that involves “prevention, mitigation, and ongoing support.” His Reliance Foundation has set up India’s first dedicated COVID-19 center with 100 beds in Seven Hills Hospital in Mumbai. The facility has a negative pressure room that prevents cross-contamination and all beds have a patient monitoring devices in addition to ventilators, pacemakers, and dialysis machines.

Reliance has also set up a fully equipped isolation facility in Lodhivali, Maharashtra. And it’s offering free meals to people in various cities affected by the pandemic as well as free fuel for the transportation of COVID-19 patients and people under quarantine, as per the government list.

The Reliance Foundation Hospital has also been offered as a quarantine center and Reliance Life Sciences is importing more test kits.

Meanwhile, the company’s telecom arm Jio is doubling the data limits for its existing broadband users and waiving service charges for new customers to receive basic connectivity wherever it is geographically possible to do so.

Jio Haptik Technologies, the company’s digital unit, has built a chatbot for free for the government called MyGov Corona Helpdesk that’s available on WhatsApp. The bot will answer questions about the outbreak and provide up to date information from India’s Ministry of Health.

Flagship Reliance Industries is also ramping up production of face masks to produce 100,000 each day along with other protective equipment like suits and garments for India’s healthcare workers. And its retail arm–Reliance Retail with 736 stores–will ensure that stores are open longer from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. It is looking to activate ordering from home and delivery for senior citizens.

Along similar lines, tractor tycoon Anand Mahindra, who believes that cases could rise exponentially leading to millions of deaths, has highlighted the urgent need for more ventilators and pledged to find a way for the Mahindra Group’s manufacturing facilities to be used for producing them.

He's also offered the group’s hospitality arm Mahindra Holidays’ resorts as temporary care centers for COVID-19 patients. And he has set up a fund to help support small business owners and the self-employed to get through the tough times. The fund is said to include 100% of his salary over the coming months.

Mahindra, who made these announcements in a series of tweets, also said that his projects team is willing to work with the government or the army for building temporary care centers.

Mahindra, who tweets under the twitter handle @anandmahindra has 7.5 million followers. In his latest post, he suggested that “if each of us takes care of the daily rations and essentials of at least 3 less privileged families, it will have an exponential effect, but unlike COVID, it’ll be a ‘good virus.’”

Metals and mining magnate Anil Agarwal of Vedanta Resources has announced the setting up of a $13 million fund primarily targeted at three areas: benefiting daily wage workers, employees and contract workers; preventive health care and to help communities in and around Vedanta’s plants.

“We will increase the corpus if the need arises,” the company said in a press release on Sunday. It will also provide special one-time insurance against COVID-19 for employees and their families.

Meanwhile, Vijay Shekar Sharma, founder of digital payments platform Paytm, has pledged $650,000 (Rs. 50 million) for any medical innovation related to the coronavirus. Innovators, doctors and research teams can reach Paytm at covidcure@paytm.com.

Paytm has also launched an “India Fights Corona” campaign in partnership with consumer goods giant Hindustan Unilever’s hygiene brand Lifebuoy and Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh’s YouWeCan Foundation. Paytm plans to distribute one million soaps and hand washes. Paytm users can contribute under the “Donation” section in the Paytm Android app or the Paytm.com site

Sridhar Vembu, the founder of cloud services firm Zoho Corp., has announced a Small Business Emergency Subscription Assistance Program. The company’s plan is to offer three months fee waiver for software that small businesses are already using. This will benefit 20,000 of its existing small business customers which have 25 or fewer employees. They will get Zoho Wallet credits which will be equivalent to three months of their bill. The small business owners can choose to use the wallet credits as he or she deems fit.

It is also providing free access to its Zoho Remotely suite of web and mobile apps for working remotely to all business until July 1, 2020. This includes a set of 11 apps–ranging from video conferencing to document management.

Edtech billionaire Byju Raveendran is offering free access to his flagship Byju's app, which offers math and science lessons suitable for children in grades 4-12 along with his Disney-BYJU’s Early Learn app that offers math and English lessons for students in 1-3 grade. The offer will last until the end of April so that school children can keep learning during the disruption caused by the outbreak.

Nitrogen, a Mumbai-based Software as a Service company, has also announced the free use of its digital platform for three months for hospitals, grocery outlets, and pharmacies. Nitrogen founders Manoj Bubna, Gautam Gurtoo and Biren Shah feel that the three industry segments could be facing unprecedented traffic because of the 21-day lockdown. They said Nitrogen can help by increasing web performance; assisting websites with handling peak traffic and strengthening security. #MohnishRANotes

New Look Sabres: GM 18 - CAR - Fix the Logjam

5-4 OT loss to the Hurricanes

What an awful Buffalo Sports weekend it was. The Sabres and the Bills both made us second guess hot starts. At least the Sabres lost to a good team. The hard part was they didn’t have to. It’s been a bad stretch for this club, the first of the season, a five-game losing streak after which I found myself not wanting to touch anything Sabres related. I didn’t want to wear my Sabres socks or any of the gear I’ve accumulated. I wanted nothing to do with this team after those stinkers in Sweden and it would seem that feeling was a common one across Buffalo Sports. The slide this club has seen over the past seven or so games is in some part because of shooting percentage. @FutureOfThe716 has been tweeting that chart watching it drop off. Corsi and high-danger scoring chances have followed the same downward trend. As a matter of fact, the statistical crashes we’ve seen through seven games is awful similar to the December drop-off of last year’s team. I want to repeat this as I rattle off grievances: these trends are not set in stone. They change whenever the guys on the ice make them change. Part of the pushback against advanced stats is their usage as predictive indicators of misery. They’re not guarantees misery comes, they’re very much indicators of past and present. They can be changed right now. One of the ways you make change is via roster moves. We have been due for a roster move for literally months. Specifically we’ve been due for a defensive departure since the moves that brought in Colin Miller and Henri Jokiharju. It has now gotten to a point where Lawrence Pilut’s return to the big club is simply because there isn’t space for him. I’m sure everyone reading this can think of at least two Sabres on the roster who are less deserving of their spots than Pilut. Is Jason Botterill working on a move? I think so, we’ve heard rumblings he’s making calls but nothing yet. Until then it would seem we’re staring down what Paul Hamilton calls a “rotation.” What you think of Paul Hamilton aside he’s correct in predicting Ralph Krueger is going to have to rotate guys like Colin Miller and any number of the other defenseman in and out while this logjam persists. With Curtis Lazar coming up for this game Miller is a healthy scratch. You have to imagine Krueger can only do so much with that blueline logjam. Tonight’s game motivates a call for the Front Office to final fix that logjam.

It would seem the team in blue and gold returned home tonight with some Swedish spring in their step. The passes were crisp and fast as all get out. Buffalo got better high danger chances, many more in fact while the shot share and expected goals went for Carolina. Jeff Skinner and the Sabres however were the early beneficiaries. Skin Man got a quick pass from Conor Sheary and shot it far side beautifully. 1-0 Sabres early. Buffalo definitely looked like the better team in the first ten minutes, but the heat wore off. Jordan Staal got credit for a deflection off his shoulder and up over Carter Hutton. For the second time in five games Hutton fell victim to one of those unseen shots that hits a bunch of bodies and arches in over him in the air. The game was tied 1-1. I’ve talked about how special teams can be an indicator of how Buffalo is doing and that metric has been rough through their recent showings. Two powerplays were duds though they looked better than the ones we got in Sweden. Carolina on the other hand capitalized on their abbreviated extra man time and Sebastian Aho further filled in his resume as a Sabre-killer to put his side up 2-1. The first period ended with a whimper and an awful defensive zone play that almost extended the Canes lead again off a Wallmark one-on-one.

The second period started off bad with Teuvo Teravainen scoring in the first minute of the second frame. The home team was not inspiring confidence until the midpoint of the game when they got a powerplay seemingly demanding a better result. Equal time for the “watch the game” crowd, this club is having trouble in the offensive zone. They are pretty flatly one and done when five on five and the powerplay offers some sustained zone time right now. No luck on this one and it hurt. They looked disenchanted going into the final five minutes of the second period when Curtis Lazar, recently called up from Rochester, got the puck off an off-target Carolina shot in the defensive zone and went off on the breakaway. He capped it off with the fake out Casey Mittelstadt always likes to do and shot it top-shelf to pull the Sabres within one. That goal came with a shade under five minutes left in the period and suddenly Buffalo came back to life. They pulled even in shots, high-danger shots and zone time. Jeff Skinner very nearly scored twice on a play that saw Hurricanes goalie Petr Mrazek take a puck off the neck. He needed some help in recovery but stayed in the game after a couple minutes. We ended up going into the second intermission down 3-2 with some momentum. Before talking about the final frame: How about a fun fact? Curtis Lazar was a first-round draft pick in 2013 for the Ottawa Senators where he scored his first career goal in Buffalo against Joonas Enroth in a very different time of Sabres history. Bonus fun fact: Lazar looks almost exactly like YA movie star Will Poulter. Look it up, it is completely uncanny, and you should definitely drop me a like, comment and share for gifting you that little nugget.

That momentum seen in the back half of the second period was lost in the intermission. There were your token opportunities through the first ten minutes of the final frame but nothing got through. Tonight was not Carter Hutton’s hottest night. I don’t want to go goal by goal, there were five, you can go look at them. Instead it’s worth noting Hutton has game-stealing abilities. In moments last season and through the first ten games this season there were moments he decided confidence would flow out of him and the team played well in front of him for it. Tonight was not one of those nights. Due to the rotation troubles we mentioned it’s not fair to put this all on him, but we’ll circle back to that. Henri Jokiharju got his second as a Sabre to tie it up with 6:29 remaining. Carolina likes to give up a botched pass in their own D-zone every once and a while too. 3-3 game and Buffalo is hungry, reports are that there were waves in the stands even before the equalizer. The energy collapsed after yet another Canes powerplay cashed in to retake the lead 4-3 with less then four minutes left. I hate the way arenas clear out when the home team is only down by a goal, but I can’t say I don’t understand it. But the fun was not over! With Hutton pulled the Sabres were playing frantically in the offensive zone and one trickled passed Petr Mrazek short. Initially the goal was credited to Jeff Skinner, flying around the net like a banshee per usual, but it was later credited to Johan Larsson who got in a fight after the goal and was in the midst of a stooge-like fall the moment the puck went in. Nonetheless a goal is a goal and we’re off to OOOOOVVVEERRRTTIMMEE… wait, what is this. GUYS! What is this? It’s 3-on-3 you guys! OH it’ over. Okay. A terrible overtime period saw Dougie Hamilton sink the OT winner and so Buffalo collected a point that felt very undeserved.

I’m not going to try and diagnose exactly what’s wrong with this team right now. I’m saving that analysis for the paid gig over at southtowntickets.com. Rasmus Dahlin played his 100th NHL game tonight so I’ll accept all the excuses he’s too young to grill for now. Sure. It’s one thing if Marcus Johansson is hurt. It’s one thing if Marco Scandella wasn’t back up to speed yet. It’s still okay if you Vladimir Sobotka is out hurt. But if we’re going to cycle out good defenseman as healthy scratches like Colin Miller in this game just because of the sheer number of defenseman that’s going to be a problem. Don’t take my earlier defense of Krueger as an excuse. He needs to be imploring Botterill to get that deal to move one of them out done. Fix the logjam, move a body for forward help. It’s not even just about Rasmus Ristolainen anymore. I think guys like Jake McCabe have value for this team but I’m not going to complain if him or Scandella gets moved in a trade that shores up the middle six scoring on the other side of the puck. There has to be signs of commitment from the Front Office. Don’t wait until the deadline. Show us your serious about playoffs this year and that ultimate, eternally distant dream of a Stanley Cup. It feels so damn close but so damn far. Well the guys on the ice have an opportunity ahead: Ottawa, Chicago, Minnesota over the next five days. Win games. You can beat all three of those teams. Take care of business and clear the rainclouds that are now very rightfully gathering after a six-game losing streak. PLEASE! Optimists like Maniac and me are starting to feel a little besieged. Let’s Go Buffalo.
