I've been wanting to begin writing fanfiction for John Seed and you're such an expert on Far Cry 5 that I wanted to ask what do you think are some important characteristics to include when writing John's character?

I don’t know if I’d dare to call myself “an expert on Far Cry 5”, but thank you for the compliment :D

Before I give you my interpretation and understanding of our beloved Baptist, let’s start with facts and canonical information!

I assume you’ve already played the game, but some things can be missed and are not always included in cutscene complications, such as some of his radio calls (available here) and sermons (here and here). His combat/Arcade lines are here, Hudson’s Confession is here, and there’s also this. As for Joseph’s message at Seed Ranch, it’s here.

Below are three notes written by John:

If you want to know what other characters say about him in Far Cry 5, I wrote a summary here (and the masterpost is here). Or, if you prefer listening to the NPCs’ comments yourself, you can find them here and here. Not everything they say is objective, of course, but it’s still interesting!

Then, you may know about it already, but there’s The Book of Joseph, an official book about the Seeds and Eden’s Gate’s backstory. You can read it online.

There’s also a video about John on the IGN YouTube channel in which two of Far Cry 5’s main writers, Dan Hay and Jean-Sébastien Décant, talk about him. And in an interview, the third main writer, Drew Holmes, said the following:

John Seed, who is the youngest, sort of wants to be recognized by his older brothers as having value. But he continually screws up, so Joseph chides him saying he’s not doing the things he’s supposed to do.

I think that the fact he wants to impress his brothers (mostly Joseph) is a crucial thing to keep in mind when it comes to John, who he is, what he does, and why he does it.

Now, here’s how I view him, understand his role in the cult, and what I’ve decided to accept as true regarding his personality, backstory, and methods (because the lore is somewhat inconsistent):

John appears confident, almost arrogant, and likes to act tough, but his ego is actually pretty fragile. His opinion of himself greatly depends on what Joseph thinks of him. If he believes the Father is unhappy with him, he will work harder, even if it means sacrificing his own well-being, because he’s relentless and probably a workaholic. It seems to me that he’s a bit jealous of Faith because she’s Joseph’s favorite “child”. Not much is known about his relationship with Jacob, but the oldest Seed sibling is apparently protective of his two brothers.

John is very emotional but also emotionally immature, and this is probably due to his traumatic and abusive upbringing. He was a kind and happy little boy, but his father’s violence and his adoptive parents’ torture changed him… As a young adult, he suffered from various addictions and, even though he was a very social and successful man, hated everyone and everything, including himself. He apparently still has trouble identifying love and understanding how it works because he’s never really experienced it when he was a child (except with his brothers). The void in his heart isn’t as big as it used to be, but I still don’t think it’s filled.

He doesn’t react well to frustration at all and can easily lose his temper if things don’t go his way. I would describe him as a perfectionist. When the Deputy arrives, ruins his hard work, and indirectly humiliates him, he becomes determined to make them Atone so they can be saved and Joseph can be proud of him. I would even say he becomes obsessed with them.

He’s a lawyer, but in the Project, he’s known as the Baptist (or “The Inquisitor” before the release of the game). He Marks people he thinks are worthy of joining the cult and sends them a personalized video. Then, they are Cleansed (basically baptized) before being taken to his bunker, John’s Gate, to Confess their sins. He tattoos what he thinks their main sin is on their chest and, after a while, cuts it out to make them Atone. Only then are they considered pure enough to join the Project. Some people don’t survive this process, either because they don’t want to, are too stubborn, not strong enough, or irredeemable, I suppose. A fan theory says that he doesn’t mutilate people who don’t resist, but there’s no proof of that; it seems the tattoos he gives are always destined to be cut out.

John is a very, very skilled interrogator and can usually get anything out of anyone, not hesitating to hurt people in the process. In fact, he wants them to experience a lot of pain (and this is what Joseph is worried about). This looks like basic sadism, but I think it’s more complicated. Because of the trauma he experienced, and especially what he explains happened to him in his parents’ kitchen one night, John is obsessed with pain and thinks it can free people. He also believes in “The Power of Yes” for the same reasons. Say “yes” to pain, to Atonement, and be free, delivered from the burden of your sins. What the Seeds put people through is usually brutal (and similar to their personal trauma), but they all believe it works, serves the Project, and has to be done.

I don’t think John is hypocritical, and I can’t see him breaking the cult’s rules (no alcohol, no drugs, no fornication) because the idea of disappointing Joseph is unbearable for him. On the contrary, I believe he wants to rigorously follow them and hates it when people don’t. If he were to transgress, in a moment of weakness or passion, I think he would feel terribly ashamed and guilty (just look at his reaction when Joseph interrupts the Deputy’s Cleansing)... I’d say he believes in God, but he mostly believes in Joseph. Even if the Heralds are not certain the prophecy is true or the Father can really hear God’s voice, they have faith in him.

So that’s what I would say about John Seed! You probably already knew most of this, but I hope it helps anyway (and that I didn’t forget anything important).

Finally, if you want accurate information, I recommend staying away from the Collapse DLC and never fully trusting the Far Cry Wiki. The novel, Far Cry Absolution, the comics, Far Cry: Rite of Passage, and the short film, Inside Eden’s Gate, aren’t bad but they aren’t very reliable sources, either. Also, John’s exact age, height, and weight are unknown.

I’m afraid not. Steam doesn’t have Android builds on their own site and Steam is not cool with keys for other sites being given out for Steam purchases, so you don’t get the Itch version from buying on Steam.

Hello! Sorry to bother you but, I had a question, if we buy the Game on itchio do we get steam keys or would we need to purchase it twice? 

You would have to buy it twice if you want it in both places, I’m sorry. To repeat myself a little, Steam doesn’t like the key trading thing. Itch may support giving keys for another site, but the reverse isn’t doable with Steam and Steam doesn’t even really want you to get a Steam key for buying somewhere else either. So we just don’t mess around with that.

hey, sorry if this is frequently asked, but is step 4 free dlc or paid for? some of your sources are contradicting each other. 

It’s free! There’s a paid wedding DLC, but Step 4 itself is entirely unpaid.

It’s not, aha. Unfortunately, 2021 wasn’t easier than 2020 as we hoped so things are still slower than planned. It’ll come out late 2021 or early 2022.

Hi! Firstly I just want to say that I LOVE Our Life. I have played a bit of similar games but this one instantly wins for the best one! Everything about it is amazing! I just wanted to ask if Derek would ever lose feelings for MC, like if they make the deal and then MC gets with Cove would he move on? and even if you don't, after "losing contact" would his feeling fade or would he still like MC? 

If you don’t really keep in touch with him and clearly move on with your life, Derek will too and he’ll be over it. But if you are still close as best as you can be, he’ll still think the MC is special. Though, he’ll always support your relationship with someone else if that’s what’ll make you happy.

Hello! Sorry if you've answered this before but: 'How's Lee related to us? Though which momma? And does she share our player-chosen last names? Also, do you know if Noelani took Pam's last name or did it happen the other way round? 

She’s related to Pamela and Pamela’s last name is the one they use, so the MC has the same last name as Lee.

Will we be able to choose which (they or he) we tend to call Qiu by more often, or will it randomly change depending on the moment? 

Qiu knows which pronoun they’re comfortable with at a time and you’ll call them what they’re happy with. And it doesn’t change between lines, it takes multiple scenes or even full Steps for it to switch. So for extended periods Qiu will be totally a guy or fully agender.

Will Step 4 of OL2 have moments?

It’ll be an epilogue like it is in OL1, so it won’t have a bunch of different Moments.

It isn’t based on one specific town you can go to, but there are a lot of little coastal towns in Cali that have a similar vibe!

You wouldn’t get the DLCs for backing there. The Patreon is for extra bonus content/early access, rather than being a storefront to purchase the normal DLCs. Rarely we give them out as a side gift, but it hardly happens and if what you want is the DLCs it’s best to ignore the Patreon and  buy keys for those directly from Itch or Steam. I’m sorry for the confusion.

I really love Our Life so much! I've spent over 20hours playing it even though I only got it a week ago! He’s got nothing against them for the people they work for, but he’s 100% monogamous and would only be comfortable with a partner who was willing to be monogamous with him.

Yeah, you can choose to live with Cove and that can be done when you’re friends.

I just played the game with the MC and Cove being best friends and omg it’s still so damn cute like the wholesomeness of it all is too much for my heart I swear ^.^  Now with that all said I was wondering can we still marry Cove? if we only love him as a friend like let’s say we’ve made deal with him similar to the one we can make with Derek because let’s real no one could compete with what the MC and Cove have even if they aren’t in love. 

It’s great to hear you enjoyed the friendship story! You can live with Cove, but you can’t marry him platonically. Cove has familial affection for the MC if they’re best-est friends. He wouldn’t think to marry someone he loves like family and even grew up with as though they truly were siblings.

Maybe you missed telling Cove you were in love with him even if you mentioned wanting to get married or you might’ve accidentally said earlier in the game that you don’t want to progress your relationship further with Cove. We haven’t removed them, so you can get the scene again. It’s just kind of easy to miss since there’s multiple requirements. You can read a little guide in the FAQ.

Technically, yes. We treat the non-romantic relationship options as truly non-romantic since we don’t want to bait and switch people. But there’s nothing wrong with headcanoning that Cove does have feelings developing for the MC even before the MC has.

Is there a way to make/allow Lee and Baxter to date?

No, they just don’t have enough time together.

We also got a group of asks related to Tamarack in OL2, but I’m afraid the way they talked about people with larger bodies made me not want to post their words, even if the person didn’t say they’re trying to be hurtful. I will separate out the core question and answer it though, so people can know that info.

Does Tamarack lose weight in later Steps?

No, she doesn’t. As for the other questions included, to be honest, I don’t have to explain/defend having romance options of different sizes. I’m sorry if you’re dealing with unhappiness that’s connected to body image, if that’s where the negative emotions are coming from, but even so I can’t meet you on that level and pretend it’s a problem that needs an answer. A girl who simply isn’t thin being a main love interest is just not an unreasonable concept. Also, Tamarack isn’t a lesbian. Yes, she can date a female MC, but that doesn’t undo her actual sexuality, so I’m not sure where that one part at the end was coming from.

I wonder... can we "fight" with Qiu over leader status? 👀

Not really, haha. No matter how cool your MC is, they’re never gonna replace Qiu for the other kids around. So you can either partner up with him, follow him too, or not be a part of all that group politics stuff.

It’d depend on his age, personality, and your relationship with him! When he’s younger he’d probably be embarrassed, when he was grown he’d probably be more casual or happy about it.

Yeah, you can be crushing on Cove and date Baxter if you weren’t already dating Cove. You just can’t be truly in love with Cove and then switch to Baxter.

The focus will be on the wedding day itself. The topic of the honeymoon might come up a bit, but there won’t be any choosing of the exact location and such.

Hi! I have two questions and it's completely understandable if you only answer one/neither and I'm sorry if you've already answered either before! First, is there a set year in which OL:B&A takes place (ex: Step 1 being set in 2010 & Step 2 being set in 2016, etc.) or is it simply up to interpretation? Second, have you guys thought about doing a coming-of-age game where the MC has a tough home life or upbringing? (like one of their parents is an addict, a parent being transphobic whilst the player has the option to be trans, or having friends that are influencing them to do drugs, etc.) That's all! There is a set timeline!

Step 1: 2006 Step 2: 2011 Step 3: 2016 Step 4: 2021 

And we don’t currently plan on making a game like that. The Our Life series exists to be a safer environment for people to play around in and if we did do a brand new series that was harsher edged it’d be something more fantastical and/or plot-driven instead of a different type of modern day slice-of-life growing up story. I’m sorry.

i don’t know if you’ve already answered this, but do you have a guess on when phase 4 will come out? as well as ol2? i’m so excited for both of them, the inclusivity in this game is amazing, you guys should be really proud of it! 

Step 4 will be coming out very soon! OL2 is gonna take until 2023 to be anywhere near completion. But we might episodically release the Steps one at a time as they get done instead of waiting for three to be finished before launch like we did with the first game.

That’s nice of you to offer. He doesn’t have a Twitter, at least not one that’s public enough to be shared with me. And I’m afraid not. The issue is that the CGs take huge amounts of time rather than there not being a budget for it. He’s gotta make CGs for Step 4, the DLCs, and new character sprites, too. I was born and raised in Cali! Though, not right by the beach. We still had to make trips out, but the setting is based on my own childhood memories of small beach towns we went through.

If you wanted context: Death Note is about this one guy who finds a notebook that kills anyone who you write the name of in there. The guy eventually develops a God Complex and starts mass killing criminals and stuff. L is the one trying to find out who is killing all these people.

Me and my sister first joked about it because I couldn't remember how to translate a word about the way Cove was sitting, so I just did the pose, and it looked a lot like how L himself sits! Then we just snowballed from there, with more and more nonsense connections.

Sansa & Bird Imagery/Symbolism

I was thinking about how many different birds appear in Sansa’s narrative, and it just felt like too many to be a coincidence, so I decided to look into their meanings a little further.

Note: I found the information about bird symbolism from this site. While there are many meanings for each bird, I am going to focus on the ones that apply to Sansa the most (in my opinion). This is just my own musings, so take all of it with a grain of salt 😊

Dove

Cersei refers to Sansa as “Little Dove.” The dove represents hope for a hurting heart and gentle compassion.

Sansa undoubtedly has a hurting heart after watching her father be executed, and yet she continues to look for hope in new friendships (with Margaery and her ladies), possible betrothals (to Willas), and even the idea of escaping.

She pictured the two of them sitting together in a garden with puppies in their laps, or listening to a singer strum upon a lute while they floated down the Mander on a pleasure barge. If I give him sons, he may come to love me. She would name them Eddard and Brandon and Rickon, and raise them all to be as valiant as Ser Loras. And to hate Lannisters, too. In Sansa’s dreams, her children looked just like the brothers she had lost. Sometimes there was even a girl who looked like Arya.

The fact that many of these hopes are dashed does not make them any less important; it just represents Sansa’s loss of innocence and naivety. She doesn’t give up hope all together – because hope is a dangerous thing to lose – but she does become more realistic about it.

She also shows compassion for so many different characters, including Lancel (getting him help when he was wounded), Ser Dontos (protecting him from Joffrey), and Tyrion (she feels bad for embarrassing him when he was placing the Lannister cloak on her, so she kneels in front of him for their kiss during the wedding ceremony; she also thinks about his possible death with sadness).

Sansa went to Ser Lancel and knelt beside him. His wound was bleeding afresh where the queen had struck him. “Madness,” he gasped. “Gods, the Imp was right, was right...”

“Help him,” Sansa commanded two of the serving men. One just looked at her and ran, flagon and all. Other servants were leaving the hall as well, but she could not help that. Together, Sansa and the serving man got the wounded knight back on his feet.

“Take him to Maester Frenken.” Lancel was one of them, yet somehow she still could not bring herself to wish him dead.

She has every reason to not be compassionate, given her circumstances, and yet she still is.

Furthermore, when doves are chosen as a power animal (spiritual guides), they are supposed to help release you from whatever holds you back. In Sansa’s case, this could apply to her physical state of being a prisoner in King’s Landing, but it could also apply to her mental and emotional state in which her naivety, shallowness, and trust in the wrong people were holding her back from growing as a person.

Little Bird

Sandor refers to Sansa as “Little Bird.” This is a very general phrase, so it’s important to look at the entire quote:

You’re like one of those birds from the Summer Isles, aren’t you? A pretty little talking bird, repeating all the pretty little words they taught you to recite.

Since he’s referring to birds that look pretty and repeat phrases, I chose to look at the meaning of a parrot, because it was the closest option on the site.

Parrots represent voice and the power of words. Sansa frequently uses her words to protect herself and others, including Ser Dontos.

Unhappy, Joffrey shifted in his seat and flicked his fingers at Ser Dontos. "Take him away. I'll have him killed on the morrow, the fool."

"He is," Sansa said. "A fool. You're so clever, to see it. He's better fitted to be a fool than a knight, isn't he? You ought to dress him in motley and make him clown for you. He doesn't deserve the mercy of a quick death."

The king studied her a moment. "Perhaps you're not so stupid as Mother says." He raised his voice. "Did you hear my lady, Dontos? From this day on, you're my new fool. You can sleep with Moon Boy and dress in motley."

“Courtesy is a lady’s armour” and Sansa’s words are the only weapons that she can use, and she spends her time in King’s Landing mastering the skill of saying the right things to the right people in order to accomplish a goal or gain something (like safety).

Parrots also symbolize growth, and at this point in the story, Sansa has started to grow as a person: she realizes that beauty is only skin deep; she appreciates her family more; she learns that she needs to be careful of who she trusts; and she learns how to be a queen (by not following Cersei’s example).

Transition

“Little Dove” and “Little Bird” both represent how fragile and helpless Sansa was in King’s Landing as well, so it’s not surprising that as she leaves and moves forward in her journey, the “birds” that she encounters are stronger and/or more independent & free (not traditionally kept as pets). 

Mockingbird

During her time in the Vale, Sansa pretends to be the bastard daughter of Petyr, whose house symbol is a mockingbird. The mockingbird symbolizes learning from experience – which Sansa certainly has!

They are children, Sansa thought. They are silly little girls, even Elinor. They’ve never seen a battle, they’ve never seen a man die, they know nothing. Their dreams were full of songs and stories, the way hers had been before Joffrey cut her fathers head off. Sansa pitied them. Sansa envied them.

Sansa had to learn some harsh truths the hard way, and she continues to learn from experience through Petyr’s teachings.

Life is not a song, sweetling. You may learn that one day to your sorrow.

When you know what a man wants you know who he is, and how to move him.

In the game of thrones even the humblest pieces can have wills of their own. Sometimes they refuse to make the moves you’ve planned for them. Mark that well, Alayne. It’s a lesson that Cersei Lannister still has yet to learn. 

The mockingbird also symbolizes mimicking others. Part of Sansa’s arc is that she has learned to distinguish what she should mimic from others (how to gain support, how to manage a great house, etc.) and what she should not mimic (Cersei’s insistence on being feared rather than loved).

Interestingly enough, the mockingbird as a power animal symbolizes trying to find or speak the truth. In the Vale, Sansa is forced to hide the truth about many things, including her Aunt Lysa’s death and her false identity as Alayne. Though she plays her part well, internally, she struggles with these lies.

I am not your daughter, she thought. I am Sansa Stark, Lord Eddard’s daughter and Lady Catelyn’s, the blood of Winterfell. She did not say it, though.

The mockingbird is symbolic of her journey to finally saying that truth - revealing her identity - and becoming Sansa Stark once more.

Falcon

Potter seems to be at his wit's end, as he tugs on his own hair then step forward to say something that has Sev jerk back, terror in his black eyes.

Pettigrew's shoulders shake in a obvious laugh before he waves his wand in the air, not exactly a threat but a very clear reminder that it could be. 

They must feel so big, cornering someone and doing so when they think no one will find them. They must feel like so fucking untouchable, on their high horses and their endless amusement at hurting others.

Severus jerks again, the terror in his eyes taking a larger form. The wolf in Remus roars with protective rage. He sprints at full force towards the group his want in his hand and shoots his sting hex before they can turn around.

It hits Black right in the rear, stinging enough to have the teen shrieks in pain as he jumps away but enough it’ll leave any marks. Can't have bias-headmaster turn the blame onto him no can he? 

 The other Marauders all turn wide eye not used to Remus resulting to violence but the full moon is too close now so he’s working on only wolf’s instincts. 

“Rem!” Sev yells amaze as if he wasn’t expecting anyone to come for him. It makes him so much angrier. The werewolf makes sure to plant himself in between him and the Gryffindors wanting to keep his friend behind him where he is safe.

“Ow ow ow. Dang Lupin, I like it when you get rough with me but not that-”  Black starts rubbing his bum until Potter slams an elbow into his ribs at the same time Pettigrew stomps on his foot. “I mean- Lupin, how are you? I’m very interested in what you have to say!”

Potter jabs him again with his elbow and Black hastily adds. “Respectfully! I’m very interested in what you have to say respectfully!” 

Pettigrew slaps a hand onto his forehead with a shake of his head and Potter sighs long-suffering. Black just looks nervous. 

“What?” He can’t help but ask. Even Sev, who always never been able to pick a bickering fight with him doesn’t know what to say to whatever just came out of the Gryffindors’ mouth.

All the fight somewhat drains out of him, suddenly confused by such odd behavior. What? Was this a new angle? Was Black trying to get him to lower his guard?  

Black looks frozen with fear for only a split second before he takes a deep breath visibly gather his courage. “I meant that you must have an incredible mind since every part of you is incredible and that you're more than just a pretty face and I think it must be tiring not have enough people realize just how amazing you are!”  

Oh.  He’s making fun of him. Of course. Black just like Malfoy. He just trying to show the world how utterly desperate and pathetic Remus is by making flirtations and watching him get flustered. It’s a trick. A joke. 

Remus’ face clouds with rage and Black actually looks started before he honest to Marlin pulls out note cards from his robes. His silver eyes run over the words, reading at a rapid pace as Potter groans.  “No Sirius, not that notes. I told you not to bring those.”

Black ignores him.  “In hopes to show you how sincere I am, I made a list of all the non-physical things about that I think are amazing. One, you always turn in your work on time. That means your reliable and dependent. Two, you never sound disrespectful even though I know I irritate you. Three, you have a big heart always helping Reggie and-”

“Sirus for all that is good and magical shut up”   Regulus says appearing out of nowhere that even Remus jumps. He gives his brother a cool unimpressed look before he grabs the Slythrains arms.  “I told you to make amends not make yourself make a fool. We’re leaving. Come find us when you figure it out.”

Quick a snake the youngest Black snatches the notecards out of his brother's hands.  “I’m taking these back. I told you to study them not read them out loud. Idiot.”

He leads them away from the  Marauders. Remus is surprised by the strong grip he keeps on his arm, but can’t help and look back at the Gryffindors. Potter and Pettigrew awkwardly pat Black’s back as the most attractive of the three bury his face into his hands. 

Once they are out of sight, Reggie releases them. But not before he realizes he’s all but holding Sev’s hand and blushes darkly. 

 “Sorry about that.” He nods his head towards the courtyard and the wolf inside Remus, now that he knows his little pack is safe, settles enough to wonder what the youngest Black had to do with all this. 

“Regulus. You set them to this?” Sev sounds hurt if he was prone to show too many emotions but the other Slythrians catch the tone easily in his voice. The third-year winces looking suddenly very shamed.  His friend presses on. “Why? Why would you do that?”

Remus looks between them feeling like he shouldn’t be watching this. He always suspected  Severus liked the younger man more then he let on, even if he wasn’t aware of the boy’s crush on him, but this may just damage any chance Regulus ever had with him. 

The younger boy shifts tension coiling his shoulders taut and swallows thickly. “Sirius approach me. It’s been so long since he’s...since he last tired and I heard him out. We’ve been reconnecting lately and I...I missed my big brother.”

He looks up pleadingly at them, begging them to understand, and Remus once again wonders why this poor kid is a Slytherin. The snakes eat people like him alive, too much emotion. 

“He’s trying again.”  Regulus continues when they say nothing. “I’ve...He promises to help me. Escape. From you know what.”

At once the half-bloods stiffen. Yes they know, a war is going on and the Slytherins are all expected to be on one side, a side that would have people like them killed, people like Remus’ mother dead. 

They have a better chance of not taking the mark but someone like Regulus? Someone who had nowhere to run when his family pushed for him to join? Sirius Black has all but ran away from his family to the safety the Potters offer, he’s going to be okay, unlike his younger brother. 

 “Fine” Sev says, unhappy but willing to understand.  “Fine.”

Regulus smiles a relived love-struck little thing and suddenly Remus can’t take it anymore. His wolf forces past his mouth filter and he blurts  “You two should kiss. Mark each other as mates.”

Remus isn’t sure who is more horrified at that moment. He turns on his heels walking away before he has to face the situation.

This,  he decides,  Is all Black’s fault. All of this. 

He so busy mentally cursing the other fifth year he completely ignores Malfoy when he arrives into the common room. He just walks up to his bed, crawling under the covers and wants the day to end.

MDZS Character Tarot Analysis - Part 2

Given my love for the Tarot archetypes, I noticed that the main cast of Mo Dao Zu Shi actually fits these major arcana readings extremely well! I therefore decided to compile all my interpretations of who fits what, including my reasonings.

I promised a follow-up post, so this has the remaining Arcana XII to XXI. Again, these are of course my entirely subjective opinions!! I mostly focused on the upright meanings of each arcana, but I gave special preference to character arcs that included both reverse and upright characteristics. There may be some slight spoilers here and there.

XII.                Hanged Man: Wen Qing

Suspension, restriction, letting go, sacrifice, surrender, meditation on breaking old patterns/habits, buying time, feeling stuck, vulnerabilities, reversal of perspective, new priorities, selflessness, giving up personal needs for greater good, devotion to bigger cause

(Reversed: martyrdom, indecision, delay, getting nothing in return for sacrifice, unwilling to sacrifice)

Reasoning: In what appeared to be their darkest hour, Wen Qing willingly surrendered everything to save Wei Wuxian and the rest of the innocents of her clan. Unfortunately, the Jin clan continued pursuing Wei Wuxian’s group of Wen clan survivors—her sacrifice seemed to be meaningless, her former pride and beauty and ability all reduced to ash for nothing. Still, even now, the best part of the Wen clan survives. As the martyred Hanged Man, Wen Qing’s words and legacy live on: “I’m sorry. And… thank you.”

Runner-ups: as I’m sure you are all aware, our boy Wei Wuxian gave up so much to do the right thing ;__;

XIII.             Death: Mo Xuanyu/Wei Wuxian

Endings, beginnings, change, transformation, transition, purification, rebirth, closing one door to open another, putting past behind you, embracing new opportunities, letting go of past, breaking old bad habits.

(Reversed: resistance to change, carrying harmful aspects from past, unable to move on)

Reasoning: Oh boy oh boy. If we had to pick a single major arcana to sum up the entire MDZS novel, it would of course be the arcana of Death. Death isn’t scary—it’s an ending, sure, but it’s also a new beginning. Of course it is a painful process, and it’s all too easy to get trapped in those past memories. But Death is ultimately a chance to put the past behind you, to break old habits, to let go of old and bitter burdens. Closing one door to open another, starting a story anew, just like how Mo Xuanyu’s death enabled Wei Wuxian’s rebirth.

XIV.           Temperance: Lan Xichen

Balance, moderation, patience, purpose, meaning, calm, tranquil, taking time, peace, making right choices, adaption, coordination, harmony with others, cooperation, synergy, timing and precision, self-evaluation and new directions

(Reversed: imbalance, stress/tension, excess, conflict/competition, lack of long-term vision)

Reasoning: Ahh, the most chill guy in MDZS~ Lan Xichen very much exemplifies the Temperance Arcana’s focus on patience, calm, peace, and mediation. He brings out the best aspects of those he works with. I specifically chose him for his role in the Three Sworn Brothers dynamic, where Lan Xichen is 100% the balancing and moderating power between Nie Mingjue and Jin Guangyao. At the same time, Lan Xichen wasn’t perfectly successful. Like in Reversed Temperance, Lan Xichen quelled the short-term disputes but could not prevent long-term conflict from finally erupting.

 XV.           Devil: Jin Guangshan or Wen Chao

Desire, bondage/chains/restriction, addiction, fear, sexuality, materialism, negative lower tendencies, harmful impulses, deception and illusion, feeling despair because of lack of control, obsession, greed, trapped

(Reversed: detachment, breaking free, power reclaimed, detachment)

Reasoning: The two straight-up scumbag characters in MDZS lol. Both Jin Guangshan and Wen Chao act according to their own harmful whims and impulses. And their ultimate fates are also perfectly ironic for the Devil Arcana: Jin Guangshan died from being trapped in the lust he had always indulged in, and Wei Wuxian mutilated Wen Chao into the base animal he always was.

Runner-ups: Jin Guangyao matches the “illusion of lacking control” and the deception aspects. Xue Yang very much works off the low instinct of “revenge”, and he is chained by his own obsessions.

 XVI.              Tower: Xue Yang

Disaster, upheaval, sudden change, revelation, momentary glimpse of truth, destruction of ignorance and false reasoning, turmoil, misfortune, upsetting all old beliefs, shattering illusions and false foundations, insecurity, shaking your very core, awakening, release from bondage, breaking down your personal defenses, pain and anguish, death of ego

(Reversed: avoiding/delaying the inevitable disaster, clinging to the lie, fear of change, intuition of upcoming calamity)

Reasoning: I’ve literally never met a character who fits the Tower Arcana better than Xue Yang. Come on, even his sword is literally named “Falling Disaster.” The moment he revealed the truth to Xiao Xingchen, I could almost literally see the classic Tower Arcana imagery of “Lightning Destroying the Tower”. That brutal revelation completely shattered the false foundations and illusions of that Yi City daily life. And with that anguished awakening, the fates of every Yi City character were sealed. At the same time, Xue Yang wasn’t solely a harbinger of destruction. Like the Reversed Tower, he too feared the destruction of that ignorance and attempted to conceal Song Lan’s arrival. Even after knowing the peaceful lie was gone, he still clung to its broken pieces.

Runner-up: A-Qing’s intuition enabled her to see the disaster coming, yet she too could not escape the tragedy.

 XVII.           Star: Lan Sizhui

Hope, spirituality, renewal, inspiration, serenity, intuition, faith and truth in the universe, fulfillment, enduring challenges and now healing, letting go of damaging memories, stable, forgive and forget, new opportunities, personal transformation, believing in yourself, generosity, giving back blessings

(Reversal: lack of faith, despair, discouragement, loss of enthusiasm, test of faith)

Reasoning: Lan Sizhui is very much Wei Wuxian/Lan Wangji/Wen Ning’s ray of hope, healing, and redemption. He went through such hell as a child, but has now been able to let go of that horrible past and make his own brighter future. He is an inspiring and serenely calming force to the rest of the young disciples. His entire existence is basically destiny proving that doing good is ultimately repaid. As the Star, he is the universe’s reward for the selflessness and love of those around him <3

 XVIII.         Moon: Jiang Cheng

Illusion, fear, anxiety, insecurity, subconscious, intuition, dreams, dim and uncertain, mystery, shadow self, repression, secrets, invisible things being revealed, deception, requirement for vigilance and clear perception, misjudgment

(Reversed: release of fear, weight being lifted, unrealistic, feeling stuck, unhappiness, confusion)

Reasoning: I finally decided on Jiang Cheng because of how much his character arc is rooted in hidden insecurity and misjudgment. Both as a child and as an adult, Jiang Cheng struggles to repress his complicated feelings. He feels stuck in the nostalgic past and trapped in the bitterness of Wei Wuxian’s betrayal. His subconscious fear and anxiety manifests as him literally lashing out. And all these years, he had to sit on a certain unspoken secret. Even by the end of the novel, that weight has not yet been entirely lifted. We can only hope that sometime in the future, Jiang Cheng will finally throw off the remaining shackles of the Moon Arcana for good.

 XIX.      Sun: “Mianmian” Luo Qingyang

Fun, warmth, success, positivity, vitality, optimism, fulfillment, source of life, happiness, action, radiation of love, confidence, enthusiasm, energy, freedom, enlightenment

(Reversed: temporary depression, lack of success, difficulty finding optimism/enthusiasm, overoptimistic)

Reasoning: This one is probably more of a stretch, but the character arc of Mianmian (AKA Luo Qingyang) is a bright spot in the cultivation world of MDZS. She started out beaten down and taken advantage of by the horrible Wen Chao and Wang Lingjiao, but she grows to take action on her own. She frees herself from the burdens of her original clan to repay Wei Wuxian’s generosity. And she shows up one last time at the end of the novel--now a confident cultivator in her own right and married with an adorable daughter, as proof that happy endings are possible. Her trajectory towards happiness is a great example of the Sun Arcana’s radiating love and infectious fulfillment.

Runner-up: the optimistic baby disciples including Lan Jingyi, who shine the hope for a brighter future in the cultivation world

XX.           Judgment: Lan Wangji

Judgment, rebirth, inner calling, absolution, inevitable, new beginning, reflection, epiphany, learning from past experiences, awakening, putting the past behind you, cleaning/purging of sins and wrongdoings, control of own destiny

(Reversed: self-doubt, missing new opportunities, overly self-critical, refusal to examine self, fear of making the important decision)

Reasoning: If our major arcana began with Wei Wuxian, it’s only fitting that it ends with Lan Wangji. In their “first life” together, Lan Wangji struggled to pin down how he felt towards Wei Wuxian, constantly doubting his own actions. He finally reached an epiphany: what he was feeling was love. Reasoning: Come on, do I even have to say it? Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji complete each other. They are each other’s missing parts. The moment these two lovestruck idiots finally get together is the Mo Dao Zu Shi novel’s peak of achievement, the cheers of success, the point of victory. And of course, you know, the satisfying climax where every single plot thread came together to solve the overarching conspiracy. After obtaining closure on (almost) all the mysteries and starting the celebrations, the two of them can finally elope together, riding off into the sunset to start a new journey across the World <3

In 1955, Moon admitted he had falsified his age to dodge the draft. Who made his “Certificate of Innocence”?

It has no court symbol or address on it, which seems inappropriate for a document from the Seoul Superior Court. It states the date of sentencing was November 21, 1955. That does not match multiple newspaper reports from the time. The Dong-A Ilbo was just one of the respected papers that carried the story. They all state that Moon was sentenced on September 21, 1955.

On that day, Moon was indicted and began a two year jail sentence. Other church leaders were also indicted at the same time.

How could Sun Myung Moon be innocent if he had admitted his guilt to prosecutor Kang Seo-yong, 姜瑞龍 ? If Moon was innocent, why was he indicted and locked up, as the papers of the time reported.

Oh Yeong-choon, 呉永春, (above) was one of the most important and loyal early disciples. She joined in Busan in early 1952. Her testimonies were published in English in February, March and May 2013 by the UC / FFWPU; she had written them in 1978 after moving to the US. In the early years Moon trusted her with important money matters. During the 1955 Ewha Woman’s University sex scandal she raised a lot of money and paid it to contacts in the police and judiciary to try to stop Moon being investigated or then arrested. According to her words, when finally she had paid enough, Moon was released—furtively, after dark, on October 4, 1955.

The certificate of “innocence”does not seem to have the name of any official. It does not list all the other charges brought against Moon in July 1955. He was “charged with the false imprisonment” for three days of a 22 year-old female university student “who he forced to adopt his new religion”.

The certificate does not look like the usual Korea official documents which famously have multiple stamps on them. The one stamp it does have is so degraded that it is conveniently illegible. The certificate was apparently created on July 1, 1974, shortly before Moon’s Madison Square Gardens speech. Perhaps Moon wanted to forestall negative newspaper reports in the US in the run up to his big public event. The certificate is the same one that Bo Hi Pak presented to Donald Fraser during that Congressional investigation. Pak insisted that Moon was innocent, but the historical record seems to prove otherwise.

Yesterday the first trial was held in the ‘Unification Church incident’

On September 20, ‘Unification Church’ leader Moon Sun Myung (real name, Moon Yong Myung), aged 36, appeared for the first day of his trial in Seoul District Court No. 4. At the 10:30a.m. hearing the presiding judge was Yoon Hak-no ( 尹學老 ) and the prosecutor was Kang Seo-yong ( 姜瑞龍 ) who was handling the prosecution of Moon Sun Myung. [The afternoon hearing was at 2:30p.m.] On this day the court was jam-packed with many women who seemed to be ‘Unification Church’ believers.

Defendant Moon, who has been much talked about concerning multiple alleged adulteries, on the day only stood as a defendant for charges of Military Service Act violations. This is because there were no complaints from the alleged victims. Along with him, other defendants from the same church stood trial as well: Kim Won-pil (28, violated the Military Service Act, and had raised his age by six years), Eu Hyo-won (42, failed to report to military record), Eu Hyo-min (36, same charge as above), and Eu Hyo-yeong (35, same charge as above).

As soon as the court session began the prosecution read the list of indictments and then the investigation into the facts proceeded. Defendant Moon did admit that he had raised his age. The legal profession still had two arguments about whether raising one’s age, even when the person subject to the draft was over 32 or 33 years old, was a violation of the Military Service Act. Nevertheless, Prosecutor Kang, in the bill of indictment, pointed out that defendant Moon “had raised his age to avoid the draft (military service) in accordance with the Christian doctrine against injuring others or taking life”.

Eu Hyo-won’s diary: “September 28, 1955. In the morning, the bamboo pen broke. Yoo Kyung-gyu came to visit us. He told us, “With Teacher you are all going to be released today.” But we were still in a very uncertain mood. In the evening, Kim Won-pil, looking out through his window cried out, “This evening?” “Yes,” I answered with a loud voice, but I wasn’t sure. Thirty minutes later, there was still no news, and we went to bed. After we fell asleep, we finally heard the rattling noise of a door being opened and somebody shouting, “380, come out with your belongings.”

Lee Chang-whan was helping us pack. I gave him underwear, shirts and socks. More than ten came out, but I couldn’t see Teacher. When I went to his room 29, he was already looking in my direction. I said, “Why only me?” Teacher said, “Go as quickly as possible; that’s the way it is.” But I couldn’t turn away. I shed tears. I wanted to go back in. When I came out of jail, I saw Soo-Yung. When Wol-Sun greeted me, Tong-Suk held my hands very tightly. We returned to the church by jeep. There were [Kang] Hyun-Sil, Chung-Sook, Ok-Bong, Hwang Un-Ja, Tong-Chol’s mother, Kim Young-Oon, Kwang Yul [Yoo Kwang-Yol] and Kim Bang-Ul.”

Choi Syn-deok 崔信德 (1921-2016) joined in 1954. Later she was Professor of Sociology at Ewha Womans University in Seoul. She wrote an article about the UC in Transactions of the Royal Asiatic Society, Korea Branch No. 43 (1967) The introduction stated: “She was once an active member of the Tong-il Church [ = Unification Church ] and was closely associated with Mun Son-myong.”

“KOREA’S TONG-IL MOVEMENT” “I present here a brief picture of the Tong-il Church from the sociological point of view. … Many reports have been made about these two religious bodies. [The other was Elder Park Tae-seon’s “Olive-Tree” Church.] There is, however, no one who really knows about their leaders, organizations, beliefs and practices. We have seen many families which have been destroyed, leaving unhappy husbands, sorrowful parents and miserable children because of these new religious movements. The purpose of this research is to help in the solution of these problems of disorganization of homes, and to make a scientific study about these groups, without emotional or biased opinions. … “Before Moon’s marriage [in 1960], believers, male as well as female, who longed to meet him and talk with him could easily arrange to be with him in the living room of a home attached to the church, staying until very late. They used to talk, sing and laugh without realizing how fast the night went, until after one or two o’clock in the morning. They called this their period of direct association with the master. Its purpose was to educate and train the believers, that is, to “restore” them.” … “In July, 1955, several senior members and four leaders as well as Mr. Moon were imprisoned under an accusation of injuring public morals. From Hong Kong to Kiev: At the end of the storm, there's a golden sky...  The inside story of how Jurgen Klopp weathered the worst to lead Liverpool into the Champions League final By Melissa Reddy

"And now, we will go to Kiev. It sounds crazy, but it's true."

The downpours, pelting over Kowloon as though they were bullets from above, had finally subsided. For Liverpool, however, this was the inception of the storm.

Before the sun could fully crack through the scattered clouds that Friday morning in Hong Kong last July 21st, Jurgen Klopp’s phone screen was crowded with notifications from sporting director, Michael Edwards, and Fenway Sports Group president, Mike Gordon. The news being broken to the manager - the club had instantly rejected a £72 million bid from Barcelona for Philippe Coutinho - was yesterday’s back-page buffet in the United Kingdom courtesy of the seven-hour time difference.

Klopp’s designs for the pre-season tour had already been scaled back due to monsoon conditions that prompted cancelled training sessions and improvised workouts. It was this development, though, which had the potential to cyclone through their preparations for 2017-18.

Liverpool could not have been more unambiguous in their response to the offer: there would be no summer sale, regardless of how much the fee shot up. Undisguised, too, was the fact La Liga’s giants would return armed with a traditional media offensive that would pack more of a punch than their improved proposals. The only variable surrounded the focal point. What was Coutinho, who had signed a new five-year deal without a release clause that January, thinking?

As Klopp entered the private assembly room for breakfast at the palatial Ritz-Carlton, the answer immediately presented itself. The 25-year-old, inner turmoil tinting his facial features, was on edge with “an instant difference in his body language,” according to observers.

So this was a problem. Klopp walked over to Coutinho to schedule a talk for that evening, when they had an honest and respectful exchange. Liverpool could not simply delete their plans for the season on account of Barcelona being unprepared for the loss of Neymar to Paris Saint-Germain, the Reds boss explained. It was a point he circled back to, while also emphasising that the timing was wrong, as was the message it would send about the club.

Coutinho understood that, but highlighted the sacrifices his wife, Aine, and parents had made for his career. The future revolved around them as much as it did his own ambitions. He was happy at Liverpool, he loved the club, he was full of gratitude… But this was Barcelona. And beyond that, it represented a lifestyle change for his family, who could function within a culture so much closer to their own. 

Klopp acknowledged Coutinho’s thought process, but repeated that it was about Liverpool and this was not the right thing for the club, for his teammates, or for their season ambitions.The message was reinforced privately by Edwards and the ownership before a public declaration.  

“We wish to offer clarity as regards our position on a possible transfer of Philippe Coutinho,” read a statement on the club’s official website on August 11 2017, which highlighted their “definitive stance is that no offers for Philippe will be considered and he will remain a member of Liverpool FC when the summer window closes.”

Through the clinking glasses and guffaws, there is thick blend of relief and defiance daubing the atmosphere in the Freshfield area of Formby. It is Saturday, January 6 2018, where a long-scheduled New Year’s celebration for Liverpool’s staff at the Klopp residence has coincided with the £142m sale of Coutinho to Barcelona. The news had been released shortly before the flow of Monkey 47 gin and a catalogue of German lager at the gathering, with the message following the announcement on the club’s official website entirely scripted by the manager.

“Players will come and players will go, that is football, but as a club we are big enough and strong enough to continue with our aggressive progression on the pitch, even when we lose an important player. We have never been in a better position in recent times, as a club, to react in the right way. We will use our size and strength to absorb moments like this and still move forward.”

That night, as the spine of the football staff and their partners made his home their own, Klopp may as well have had the words inked on his appearance. The party, defined as “symbolic” and “powerful” had an element of toasting to Coutinho’s contribution at Liverpool, but at the same time, there was a sense of middle fingers flying in the direction of the doom decorating his departure.

Whatever followed, those present felt they were in this together. They believed in each other, in the roster, that the addition of Virgil van Dijk would make Liverpool stronger, that there was more than enough snarl as a collective to continue on an upward trajectory. That Klopp, above all, subscribed so religiously to this thinking translated into others sharing his conviction.

Liverpool would not just be fine, Liverpool would be fucking flying.

Klopp was a portrait of confidence and composure, but the previous five months had been stressful for the former Borussia Dortmund trainer. It went against his entire nature, heavily built around empathy, to see a player so sewn in distress. He treasured Coutinho professionally as well as personally and agonised over what the saga was doing to the Brazil international. Klopp imagined what it was like for him at home. He was torn by the impact it was potentially having on his wife and young daughter. The manager knew how he'd feel if one of his own kids were going through that situation, or if his partner was being affected by it.

Part of Klopp’s weaponry is sagacity, drilling deep to appreciate what drives those that line up under him or work alongside him. That he knew Coutinho, who is quite sensitive and counts his family as his axis, was cheerless made him so too.

The 50-year-old is often cast as the centrepiece, revelling in attention. He is charismatic, and so is more than comfortable getting on the dance floor or grabbing the mic to create a rhapsodic environment. But those who know him best insist Klopp is happiest sitting off and shining the spotlight on the ones he cares about having a good time.

He loves witnessing the initiation tradition of a player singing a song in front of all his teammates. He adores the environment the squad have carved between themselves and the way they have married the serious (a strict fine system) with the humorous - Dejan Lovren’s ‘gaffer’ social media undressing stands out after he revealed his Champions League half-time rallying call at Manchester City. Klopp can also spend hours on YouTube watching videos of joyous supporters and has noted multiple times this season that watching the crowd develop and truly connect with the team has been special.

So to view the opposite - to see sadness plague Coutinho - was piercing.

As such, if the decision was solely Klopp’s to make, the No.10’s switch to Spain would have been sanctioned before the start of 2017-18. Never thinking he is always right, and knowing what he personally felt was trivial when juxtaposed with the full picture, the German supported the reasoning of Edwards, Gordon and the ownership in general. It did not make sense then, that when the only route available for Coutinho to secure an exit was to go antagonist, his camp targeted the manager in their press onslaught, which only hardened FSG’s stance.

Klopp hid it well, but the falsehoods over his relationship with Liverpool’s “genius,” plus the player’s manufactured unhappiness at the club did hurt - especially as he continued to publicly fight his corner. Coutinho’s performances post the saga, especially on the continent, may have been seen as a fait accompli, but to get him to feature in the Champions League at all was an achievement.

When it became apparent there was absolutely no twisting of Liverpool’s arm, the threat of not representing the club in Europe was still strongly being advocated by his advisors. Gordon and Edwards toiled to surgically remove that and Klopp began reintegrating Coutinho, a process made simpler by his protection of the wantaway star.

Despite the heckling and suspicious inverted commas each time the ‘back injury’ that sidelined the midfielder in August was mentioned, Klopp never deviated from his line - even when the issue was “only emotional” according to Brazil’s doctor during an international break.

Squad harmony and ensuring there were no further hiccups to the start of the season was paramount for Klopp - he did not mind being the subject of ridicule, which drew mass respect from the dressing room.

2018 had only just ticked in, but it entered with the same complexity and concern Liverpool had enjoyed a temporary break from.

Barcelona were not so much knocking on the door as they were smashing through it. Coutinho’s desire to leave had not diminished despite his excellence behind a supreme frontline and the club preparing for their first Champions League knockout fixture since 2009. Liverpool did not want a repeat of the upheaval of the summer, but conversely, neither did they want to cede the Brazilian during such a positive juncture.

Against the tide, they attempted to persuade him to stay until the end of the season on very lucrative terms - a deal now effective later. However, there was no budging from Barca’s end nor his: Coutinho had been on Merseyside for five years and he was adamant: it was time to say goodbye.

As the days ticked on and the eventuality of a sale became more pronounced, Gordon was hugely concerned that the uplifting tone around the club would morph into one of unrest. He was insistent that any abuse should be funnelled towards him and the ownership, shielding Klopp and the squad from toxicity.

Through this period, though, there was no calmer person at Melwood than the manager and there was no way he wouldn’t front up. Klopp demanded that everyone relax, that this was just a football transfer, and so they should treat it as such and nothing more. If Liverpool did not want any drama around it, then it was imperative that they did not create a spectacle themselves. It was a transaction, not a tombstone for the Reds’ season.

The most significant factor was how the squad would react to the development. The Magician was loved his peers, but additionally, there had been an episode that played on Klopp’s mind.

One August afternoon, a desperate Coutinho approached the senior players’ committee and pencilled in a talk in one of the meeting rooms on Melwood’s ground tier. He appealed to them to change the club’s mind, and while he knew the squad wanted him to stay, he also figured fellow professionals would recognise why he felt this was a ‘dream step’ that was critical to take. For all the chicanery that occurred during the summer window, it was the folding of his teammates into the fuss that most annoyed Klopp.

So when the deal was done and Coutinho was off, the manager rounded up the full group in the dressing room at the training complex and delivered an incisive address. The message was that they'd lost a great player and a friend, but it was no more than that. He told them to not give anyone on the outside a chance to say that Phil going has affected their season. Klopp mentioned that the scrutiny would increase, but he didn't believe it would hamper Liverpool in a negative way. It was important for the team to believe the same, because if they allowed his exit to be an excuse, Liverpool were weak. He reminded his players they could decide whether people said their collective genius had walked out the door with Coutinho.

"This is us. On we go."

Liverpool had anticipated a thunderstorm, and when the whistle for the interval went at the Etihad, they were relieved for the respite from Manchester City’s electric onslaught. The scoreline was only 1-0 to Pep Guardiola’s men on the night, and still 3-1 to the visitors on aggregate in the Champions League quarter-finals, but those first 45 minutes were punishing.

Klopp’s half-time routine is consistent home and away. He speeds from the touchline to the dressing room, takes off his jacket and convenes with assistant coach Peter Krawitez, who has selected crucial in-match clips along with analysts Harrison Kingston and Mark Leyland. The footage they slice is never usually of a goal being conceded or scored, but examples of how to avoid the former or ensure the latter by highlighting the positioning of the defensive line or where the best offensive spaces are.

At City, there was a deviation. Lovren had been shouting, telling the team to ‘wake up,’ that they weren’t showing enough belief and were allowing Kevin De Bruyne and co to do as they please. Klopp pounced on this as the perfect opening for his own message and so he broke away from his normal process, allowing the centre-back to speak for just under a minute before then commanding the room. He started by agreeing with the Croatian, before pointing at Lovren and Van Dijk, saying they were killing the team by being too deep. 

He then calmly got his crucial information over: get higher, condense the pitch and stop City playing the passes that feed their strengths. In possession, relax, orientate yourselves better and speed it up. He pointed out spaces available to break City’s press, helping Liverpool retain the ball and thwart the hosts’ constant flow of attacks. Klopp then highlighted Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s chance at the end of the first half as the memory that would be playing on loop in the home dressing room. He stressed that City had just seen what Liverpool were capable of and it would be terrifying them as all it would've taken was one successful attack to scorch Guardiola's charges.

There was an element of 'so what the fuck are we doing still sitting here?' as he ordered them to go out and get back on the front foot.

While City were engulfed by the emotion of the occasion with Guardiola getting sent off at half-time, Liverpool used the break to reorganise. Klopp’s ability to cut through everything and communicate concisely was visible through the first passage of play in which his side strung five to six consecutive passes together. It culminated in Mohamed Salah’s opener on 56 minutes that effectively ended the tie, after Gini Wijnaldum fed Oxlade-Chamberlain. The England international dissected City to supply the Egyptian, who along with Sadio Mane had worked to isolate and unsettle Aymeric Laporte, Fernandinho and Nicolas Otamendi as per instruction.

Klopp is forever examined through his magnetism, but not his methods. People see the cool as fuckfigure with his unkept stubble in a hoody and trainers, but not the tactical nerd obsessed with preparation and details. The storyline is dictated by the hugs, fist pumps and rantings, but should be about the composed leader, who is able to read the room and never ducks a big call.

Liverpool need only a point to secure Champions League football heading into the final top-flight game of the season against Brighton? Ok then, he'll just pick four attackers. There is a misconception too that Klopp’s management is punctuated by Hollywood moments, that ‘Any Given Sunday’ type zingers are delivered on a daily. 

To this point, Andy Robertson and Oxlade-Chamberlain are often asked “what did Klopp say to you when things weren’t going well at the start of your Liverpool career?” There is no cinematographic answer as there were no elaborate meetings or ground-shifting discussions. He told them to continue as they were, put in the work, and the time would come, things would align.

Klopp believes there is no point ballooning something beyond what it actually is, and that often, the best decision to take is none at all. He figures having ‘the talk’ can be self-indulgent and self-serving at times. If there is no certain benefit to a player, what exactly is the point? And if there is no massive issue, with the criticism existing externally, why should Klopp feed the notion that there is a problem by formally addressing it?

Take Mane for example, who was slightly off colour for a period, snatching a little too much and overthinking every action. In general, though, the speedster was still a threat, still being decisive and still ensuring that the front three functioned exceptionally while adding to his defensive duties.There was never a big sit down with the Senegal international, simply a brief sort of ‘What’s up? Stop beating yourself up about any mistakes, I am very happy with you.’ Mane found his own way through his stifled spell, aided by a sprinkling of encouragement rather than a lengthy tactical dissection.

Klopp doesn’t hesitate to assume control when a situation demands it - see Mamadou Sakho as a reference - but he dictates when necessary, not out of ego nor as an act.

At Hope Street Hotel in Liverpool’s city centre, those who would now work closely with the club’s new manager were offered insight into the character behind the established caricature.

After Klopp signed a three-year deal worth an estimated £7m per season in the Sixth Boardroom, where Rafa Benitez had also ratified a contract with the club in 2004, he gathered the football staff for dinner. Some expected a rousing speech from the German, others assumed it would be the introduction to Jurgen’s Law. Instead, Klopp spoke very little, inviting everyone to tell him about themselves, their roles and how things worked at Liverpool - from training schedules to the matchday routine. He wanted to absorb as much information as possible.

When it was time to talk through the media plan for his unveiling, Klopp was asked about his preferences when dealing with press. “No, no,” he responded, underlining that this was the communication team's field and they were the experts. They had to tell him how it should be. They had to teach him.

One of the Stuttgart native’s gifts is trusting and turning to the people he works with, previously stating “I’m not a one-man show. I was never that in my life, and I never want to be that. The best lesson you can get in a day - to speak to smart people about things they know about much more about than you do.”

It is why when recruitment continuously pushed Salah to the forefront of the agenda for Liverpool’s incomings, Klopp co-signed their expertise. He is across everything, but respects staff who take responsibility for their spheres of influence and are bold enough to settle on important decisions without informing him of each small detail.
