Clarke redid her ponytail as she waited for the reporter to catch up with her at the side of the field. The deafening crowd had slowed after their hard won victory and celebrations of once more being classified for the world cup semi-finals. The reporter, a beautiful redhead that didn’t reach Clarke’s shoulders even on heels, spoke hurriedly into the microphone, “Clarke Griffin, congrats on the victory and classification! You had to work hard today to achieve this!”

“Thank you, and as always, it was a team effort.” Clarke rolled her shoulder, a little stiff after the dive at the end of the second half. “We’re all excited that we’re one step closer to our goal.”

“And how are you feeling about facing Lexa next week?”

Clarke blinked hard, focusing on the little dip of the reporter’s lips as she processed the words. “I, I mean I—”

“Their game went to extra time, and Lexa scored in the second half.” The reporter smelled blood in the water and smirked, the camera missing the glint in her eyes as she said, “You’ll be facing your wife in the semifinal. How do you feel about that?”

Clarke’s shoulder ached.

“My goal remains the same,” she said in a neutral tone. “We always knew that was a possibility, and I will give 100% to my team. Thank you.” She ignored the follow-up questions and headed straight to the tunnel, following the chant of “the champion is back” echoing in their locker room. She distributed high fives with her good arm and looked around until she found dark, worried eyes. Behind the wall of red, white and blue celebration, Clarke whispered to Raven, “Are they in?”

“Yeah,” the physical preparator responded. Raven looked happy, but there was an apprehension in her tone. Her wife had assisted Lexa’s goal, after all. “Lexa. Anya’s assist.” They both chuckled dryly. 

“Fuck,” Clarke whispered. “Okay. I got this. We got this. Right?”

Raven touched Clarke’s sensitive shoulder, frowning when the 6’1” keeper hissed. “Yeah, it’s just our marriages on the line. They will get over the defeat, eventually. How’s the shoulder?”

“Coach won’t let us see them until the game, will he?”

“I don’t think that’s a good idea, Clarke.”

Someone jumped on Clarke’s back, their bubble of privacy bursted with a sharp “whoop!” yelled at her year. 

“Clarke Griffin, our savior!” Octavia hugged her keeper again before jumping down her back. “I thought we were done with that penalty kick!”

“Never.” Today was a day to celebrate. She would worry about her marriage and their game tomorrow. 

And Lexa would be fine. She could handle Lexa.

“Never,” Clarke repeated and shared one last look with a worried Raven.

The press coverage had doubled over Clarke. Avoiding questions was getting hard, so at the press conference after their last practice, Clarke sat down in front of the flashes and microphones.

“Is the fact that Lexa is your wife going to affect your game?” The first question came from the back of the room. Clarke gritted her jaw.

The room broke into laughter, and Clarke walked to the back exit. Her hands prickled with sweat.

Blood pumped loudly in Clarke’s ears. The fans behind her goal yelled all kinds of profanities and slurs, the side strategically chosen when Anya won the coin flip. Clarke knew they were the team to be beaten, and now it was in her hands to prove that. The referee approached her and said something. She didn’t understand a single word, but assumed it was the usual line warning and nodded, walking to her spot. She opened her arms, glanced forward, saw Octavie cheering her own, the classic “you got this” on her lips.

And then she saw green.

Lexa walked from the middle of the field, looking straight at her, her pace calm and calculated.

The woman walking down the field was not Lexa Woods, her best friend, wife, lover, mother of their girls. 

That was The Commander, the ruthless striker that made her name as the best player in the world after a hard childhood in a country that didn’t care about women’s sports.  The clicking sound of cleats against the hard floor echoed in the hallway.

A security guard made his way to Lexa, but seeing who she was, he let her go through the back door.

Lexa sighed in relief at the sight of the bus still parked, running and ready to go, but women clad in white suits still boarding it. It was hard to miss Clarke, the tall, strong woman like a pristine marble statue, as she waited at the end of the boarding line.

Lexa, in her muddy uniform, stopped as every single player looked at her. The personal security from the national team made his way to her, but the coach waved him off. No other player made a comment as Clarke stepped away from the line and met Lexa, who remained on the other side of the separating ropes. The media was not there yet; no cameras, no prying eyes besides Clarke’s team.

“Hi,” Lexa said, and she really wanted to wipe away the smile from her face, but it was impossible. They had been celebrating their spot at the final with the crowd, and by the time she could slip away, Clarke was ready to go back to her hotel.

“Hi.” There was a small smile on Clarke’s lips, a little sad and defeated, and Lexa wanted to kiss it away.

“I—”

“Congratulations,” Clarke forced out, shrugging her shoulders. “That was a great shot.”

“Babe, I—”

“I love you,” Clarke cut her. “But… just give me tonight, okay? Tomorrow morning is my last day with the team and I’ll join my mom and the kids at their hotel.”

Lexa swallowed and nodded. There was so much joy within her, but that broken expression in Clarke’s eyes was making it hard to remember why she should be happy at all.

“I love you too.” Lexa extended her hand, a peace offering. Clarke took it, and Lexa pulled her a little closer, kissed her fingers. They were red, taped, and the pinkie was swollen. A goalkeeper’s hand. “Please don’t be mad.”

Clarke barked a laugh and pulled her wife into a hug. Lexa breathed, relieved, burying her face in her wife’s chest. “I’m not mad at you,” Clarke said, but her voice shook. “But I’m a sore loser, you know that.”

Lexa took a deep breath of Clarke’s perfume and grimaced at seeing the mess she made in her wife’s immaculate white suit. “You were always my greatest challenge.”

“We’ll talk again in four years.”

“Griff.” A voice called from behind them, and they turned to see Octavia calling her teammate from the bus, and every single player in the bus watching them from the windows. While Raven waved at Lexa, Octavia flipped her off with a smile. “We gotta go. And you better crush those stupid Germans in the final, Lexa.”

“You bet,” Lexa said and stopped back on her side of the rope. “Family brunch tomorrow? With the girls?”

Clarke nodded, picked up the duffel bag she had left at her feet and leaned to whisper next to Lexa’s ear, “I won’t be gentle next time.” 

Lexa’s cheek warmed with a blush, because she knew exactly what those dark eyes were promising, and it had nothing to do with soccer. Lexa blinked as Clarke pecked her lips and walked back to the bus. It was driving off when she heard cleats behind her. She turned to find Anya cursing at seeing the bus drive away.

“Did you talk to her?”

“Yes,” Lexa answered her captain. “We’re good.”

“So get your head together. We have a title to win.”

“Aren’t you mad you missed Raven?”

Anya shook her head. “Not really. She sent me nudes after the game.”

Laxe chucked, walking back to their locker room. “I can’t believe you too.”

Karl: Why yes! Tam is starting the production of a new crime drama, and they're cast-calling for a black-American male, with a tone body, and flexible movement.

Clifton: They're looking for a black man in a program about crimes? Pfftt, I certainly don't like the sound of that.

Karl: Oh no, it's not what you think! I mean they want someone to play one of the lead heroes! I talked to them about giving it to you. Don't you wanna take a step further into your acting goal?

Clifton: Well... Yeah, and it all sounds really great! But I don't think I'm ready to hit that road yet.

Karl: Huh?

Clifton: Well, the crime drama thing seems a little bit... How should I put it? ...complex. Right now, my acting experience is limited. All I did on Karl's Paradise was put on a suit, move around, and grab things. I didn't even get to speak my own voice. Literally. I think I should take it slow for the time being. Tell them I'm gonna have to pass up.

Karl: C'mon, Cliff! Never say die unless you try! This job will mark the beginning of your big break!

Clifton: I don't know-

Karl: With all that money, you could provide your family all what they deserve! You've always talked about how they mean the world to you! Your wife will always be happy, your mother will live more healthy, and your daughter could be enrolled with the best educational systems! You could even buy a bigger house! If you feel you're not ready, we could have training lessons over at my place! I even got a copy of the script!

Clifton: Why does it matter so much to you whether I get the role or not?

Karl: I kept this between myself and I for very long, and I think I ought to let it out now: You have always been my favorite, Cliff. The character, in which you portrayed, was very important to me. When I first designed that character, I projected some of my attributes onto him. Then, you had put on the suit and made him animated. I knew you'd be the one. He was exactly how I pictured him in my head.

Clifton: Well, I would admit I did do a good job, but I wouldn't call it a stellar performance.

Karl: Don't beat on yourself, Cliff! In my opinion, it WAS a stellar performance! And dare I add, you are a family man, right? I'm a sucker for families! Especially children! That's why I gotten into children's entertainment! To make them glow in happiness!

Clifton: [*Inaudible mumbles*]

Karl: What was that?

Clifton: I, I said, I guess I can give it a shot. The money would do me and my family good. The bills need to be paid, and Beth has been twitterpated for an Easy Bake Oven.

Karl: Great! Come visit whenever you're available! I'll put on a fresh pot of coffee!

Clifton: Tomorrow. I'll let my wife know.

Karl: Oh, no no! Cliff, we don't wanna ruin the surprise!

Clifton: Man, if I just sneaked to some place without telling Janet, she'll get the expression that I'm seeing another woman!

Karl: Don't worry! If she gets suspicious, I'll cover for you! It's all in my hands! Trust me!

Clifton: Alright. But one more thing: If I don't nail this role, do not pester me over a new career ever again.

Karl: Cross my heart and hope to die!

Rebecca: Oh my god- Karl! You have every nerve calling me up! You of all people!

Karl: I know! Did you miss me?

Rebecca: Like I miss a kidney stone! Good-fucking-bye!

Karl: Wait, don't hang up!

Rebecca: If you're calling me because your show's been picked up again, no use talking me into it! I've never been so embarrassed in my life! My friends still won't let me live it down, and my brother-in-law keeps making long distant calls just to tease me about the damn shark! And I couldn't stand looking at those costumes, even my own! What the hell were you thinking?

Karl: I just thought you suited the role so much. The way you brought life into the character really made you my favorite!

Rebecca: I don't care, and I was talking about those costumes! How could you not see how terrifying they were? You gave a goose teeth! A goose with teeth!

Karl: They're not that bad! Just wanted to give them a little cartoony-ness in their appearances!

Rebecca: Karl, they made kids cry! They're THAT bad! It's like they came from Sesame Street Reject Hell!

Karl: [*A moment of silence, then, angry breathing is heard*]

Rebecca: You still there?

Karl: Yes. I'm still here. The reason I called was to ask you a favor regarding the show. Also, it's still pulled off the air. I'm making a biography based on experience working on Karl's Paradise. I interview you, and you give me all your views on the show, whether they are positive, or negative.

Rebecca: Forget it. Now if you excuse me, I have to hunt a new job. One where I possibly don't have to show my face.

Karl: I'll pay you!

Rebecca: What?

Karl: The exact same amount as your salary from Tam! Please! Just come to my place, answer a few questions, and you'll never see my face again!

Rebecca: [*Sighs*] You're a sad man, Karl. Alright, I'll do it. Throw in a couple of snacks, with some iced tea, and you have yourself a deal.

Karl: Lucky for you, I always bring out the refreshments to guests!

Sam: Who is it?

Karl: Double-K, that's who. [*Giggles*]

Sam: Oh, hi Karl! Didn't think you'd call me all of a sudden. Are you still down over the show's cancelization?

Karl: Nahhhh. That's all in the past now. I'm working on a new project at Tam, and it's far better than my last one.

Sam: Ohhhh. Glad to hear that you've moved on. I must say: Although Kar- [*Sneezes*] Excuse me...

Karl: No, bless you!

Sam: Thanks. As I was saying; Although Karl's Paradise wasn't the best experience I ever had, it sure was a fun one. I actually started to take a liking to Mama LongLegs.

Karl: Yeah, you were always cut out for her. When you showed up for that audition back in '88, and you first put on that suit, that was the day my Mama LongLegs was discovered. You nailed every aspect of her character, minus the voice.

Sam: And you know something funny? I didn't think I'd get the role with my height and all. Mama LongLegs could've been given to any one of those women under 5'8. Nice of you to care more about personalities than looks.

Karl: Wise Miss you are. That's why you've always been my favorite.

Sam: I am? Oh gosh, I don't know what to say...

Karl: How 'bout "yes?"

Sam: Excuse me?

Karl: I mean, how's about coming over to my house for a couple of photoshoots? ...in costume? The other cast is involved as well. Even though the show is cancelled, they're still giving me the right to merchandise it. All I need right now is your approval.

Sam: Oh. Well, sounds fun!

Karl: It sure is! I'll even put on a fresh pot of coffee!

Sam: I'll be there! Also, [*Jokingly tone*] for this photoshoot, I won't be taking anything off, will I?

Karl: I'm not that kind of man! Don't worry, you'll be fully covered! You're just wearing the costume, and that's it.

Karl: Leon, it's me.

Leon: Man... I wouldn't have stayed if it weren't for the money. And the free Dunkin' every morning. As for those costumes... wayyyyyy fucking creepy to the max. They'd make great props for a halloween haunted house, though. Wish I could've took mine with me.

Karl: Are you finished?

Leon: Shoot.

Karl: *Ahem* As I was saying; what you just mentioned is exactly what I called for!

Leon: You're gonna pay me? You're gonna buy me Dunkin'?

Karl: No, but how would you like to take your costume home with you? You can scare the shit out of kids every halloween, as much as you want!

Leon: Ehhhh, it isn't money or greasy donuts, but it'll do. I'll take it. Alright, when are you gonna deliver it to me?

Leon: Whatt... No way. I am not getting off my ass, driving a mile block, just to pick up a damn costume. Forget it. The thing would probably eat my soul while I'm sleeping anyways.

Karl: There's Dunkin' in it for you! Along with an iced coffee.

Leon: Dammit, Karl. You know my weakness too well. I'll get my keys.

Summary: Blossom returns home after a very late night spent working, only to find Brick still awake working on their tax return. She decides to help...

Brick was angry.

Blossom could tell from the way he said “It’s fine” when she apologized: like he was appraising the mediocre fifteen dollar table wine a guest brought to dinner to be polite. She glanced at the digital clock on the microwave behind him: 12:24 a.m. Yes, it was very late for a Wednesday. Her client was hoping to close an eighty million dollar Series D financing in the morning, and Blossom was all but fending for herself and the junior associate she’d sent home early out of sympathy for the girl’s personal life. Must be nice to have one of those lately.

“I am sorry,” she apologized again, dropping her bag in one of the empty chairs at the kitchen table where Brick was hunched over his laptop and a scattering of paperwork and receipts. She brushed her long, red bangs out of her face. “We’re closing tomorrow. It’s always herding cats at the eleventh hour.”

“I said, it’s fine.” Brick busied himself organizing papers that didn’t need organizing and didn’t look up at her. There were lines under his eyes. His tie was missing, and his collared shirt was aggressively unbuttoned as though he was too hot. His short hair was mussed. He looked tired, yet determined. He looked like he wouldn’t be sleeping tonight until their tax return was finally finished.

Blossom appraised him, considering. It was late. She was exhausted. A hot shower beckoned her out of her high-waisted skirt. But she felt a warm flutter down her spine at the sight of his fingers gripping his hair, a pen tucked behind his ear, and all this work he insisted on doing himself because it needed to be done right. If he was going to be up, he might as well be up with company.

She plucked the pen from behind his ear and chewed on the cap as she pulled the nearest document toward her. “Instructions for Form 8938,” she read the bold, black typeface and quickly scanned the first page. “Foreign financial assets.” She glanced at Brick, who watched her over his laptop. “I take it this is the first year you’ll be reporting your offshore accounts.”

“I’d rather not get nailed for tax fraud, of all the things.”

“How romantic.” She examined the report he’d begun filling out in his neat script. “Says here there’s a seventy-five percent penalty for fraudulent underpayment.”

“Fraud is hard to prove.”

She held his gaze. “Not that hard.”

The challenge hung over the kitchen table between them. Brick closed his laptop with a click. Blossom returned her attention to the IRS instruction printout and ignored the skip in her heartbeat.

“Let’s see.” Blossom leaned over the printed out instructions and Form 8938 itself neatly stacked next to them. “Line 3, Specified Individual…” She took a moment to review the defined term in the instructions and smiled to herself. “Married, filing jointly.” She checked the appropriate box.

The sound of Brick’s chair sliding across the hardwood floor and his footsteps coming around the table stirred something in the pit of her belly, but she didn’t look up, feigning total focus on her task.

“Part I. Foreign Deposit and Custodial Accounts Summary,” she read aloud. Splayed across the table in tidy piles were more print-outs: bank statements in English, French, and Spanish from a number of different institutions around the world. She selected the nearest one for an account in the Cayman Islands and stared for a long time at the healthy balance summary.

A sudden flush of heat hit her back through her silk blouse, and she shivered. He was right behind her. “I already did the math, over there.” Brick’s hand closed over hers and pushed it to a notepad full of his handwritten calculations. Blossom followed the parade of numbers to their robust summation, and she bit her lip. “Do you need me to check it?”

His voice was a murmur very close to her ear. “I already did.”

Of course he already did.

When his other hand found its way under the hem of her skirt, Blossom’s breath hitched. His fingers were unconscionably warm as they swept over the back of her thigh.

“What’s next?” he asked.

Blossom pressed her lips together to keep silent as his brazen fingers crept higher up her thigh beneath her skirt and his other hand pulled her bangs from her face.

“Next?” she asked, intensely focused on his thumb brushing the bottom curve of her ass.

He tucked her bangs behind her ear and pressed his lips to the shell. “You promised you’d help with the taxes.”

Goddamnit, she had promised that.

Returning her attention to the Form 8938 instructions, Blossom read aloud: “Part III. Summary of Tax Items Attributable to Spe—” She cut herself off in a breathy gasp when Brick pressed two fingers against her sex.

“Attributable to…?” His voice gave away nothing.

Blossom clenched her fist to get her bearings. He didn’t move his fingers at all, which was downright petulant of him. The instructions swam in her vision, and it took all of her willpower to resume reading. “Attributable to Specified Foreign Financial Assets.”  

His breath was warm at her neck, but his fingers were warmer as they hooked around the edges of her panties and dipped into her heat. Blossom went slack-jawed and closed her eyes. The urge to close her thighs and keep him there where she needed him most was almost overwhelming.

“Enter the following assets,” Blossom managed over the slippery sound of his fingers shifting.

“Can you be more specific?” Brick spoke for confirmation, because he was as pedantic as he was attractive.

Blossom moved her pen to the first line item: “Interest,” she said.

His hand in her hair yanked hard, and she hissed.

“Dividends,” she breathed.

He pressed a kiss that was more teeth than lips to the tender flesh behind her ear.

“Royalties—ah!”

Brick’s slick fingers pulled out and swept over her clit, and her elbows gave out along with her voice. Her body writhed, but the hand in her hair anchored her with a warning push of power that scattered down her spine in a thousand crimson sparks. Regrettably, he abandoned his impulsive detour and sank his fingers back inside her.

“Record the interest on my Cayman account,” he said conversationally, like a jerk.

Blossom’s hand shook as she picked up the pen she’d dropped and, miraculously, didn’t disintegrate it with her powers as she wrote down the number he’d previously calculated in his notes. “Can we just—”

“Move on to the next part. I don’t have anything else to disclose under Part III,” he interrupted, quiet but stern.

Tractable and much hotter than she was used to feeling, Blossom pinched her painted lips in a grimace and searched for the next section. Was she so pliant? So easy? No, never, that wasn’t her. She felt out of character, out of body, out of control…

And she reveled in it.

“Part VI. Detailed Information for Each “Other Foreign Asset” Included in the Part II Summary,” she read as he continued to massage her with languid resolve. “Enter a description of the account or asset. If the asset is stock or securities, include the class or issue of the stock or securities.” Blossom’s breathing deepened and frost froze the hairs on the back of her neck, but Brick’s warm lips melted it as soon as it bloomed.

“Example 16,” she delivered with iron goddamned resolve. “You own 100 shares of XYZ Company, an Italian S.A. A sufficient description is ‘100 shares of Class—ah Brick!”

He rubbed the pads of his fingers directly over her clit like he was out to unravel her, and he was absolutely succeeding as she lost her tenuous grasp on reality and shame and pushed back with Super strength. His free hand abandoned her hair and flew to her hip to lock her in place. Pressed flush against the growing bulge in his pants, Blossom tossed her head back on his shoulder and whimpered.

His voice in her ear was honey over hot iron. “You’re fucking soaked.”

Rare were the occasions when Blossom lost her head. She’d lost more than that when Brick walked back into her life after years out of sight, out of mind. But she had long ago accepted that a part of her had always belonged to him and always would, until the demise even their deified powers couldn’t save them from caught up to them, as it catches up to all mortals.

But for now, she could lose what remained of herself in his strong arms and that wicked mouth that challenged her dominance even now. Especially now, as she let him hear her pleasure while he fucked her with his fingers.

“I’m not clear on that last bit,” he said in that same, smooth baritone because he was once a villain and would never let her forget it.

Blossom snapped the pen like a twig and shoved her hips back against him. “One hundred shares of Class D stock.”

His laugh was not so smug anymore as long as she could feel his erection straining against the small of her back. “That’s my girl.”

He gave her exactly what she needed with a few serious strokes that snapped the taut coil in her belly and had her spilling her pleasure in his hand and her voice to the farthest corners of the room. Writhing, Blossom’s legs threatened to give out until Brick’s hands steadied her hips and wrenched her ponytail once more. His damp fingers left a dark stain on her skirt that she could not have cared less about right now.

She made a haphazard attempt to shove the ordered piles of paper and notes away, but gave up a couple seconds later when he’d gotten his belt unbuckled and entered her completely without hesitation. Blossom choked on a wanton sob and arched lower over the table to give him a better angle.

Behind her, Brick finally began to crack in earnest. “Fuck, Blossom… I’m not going to last—”

Blossom pushed back to meet his thrusts, her knuckles smoking with pink power as she held her angle and thanked their foresight for bolting this table to the ground in case of spontaneous Super sex after midnight on a Wednesday.

She smiled, euphoric, as their power mingled and she felt him near his brink. “So don’t,” she dared him, and floated off the floor and inch for a deeper angle.

Brick made a choking sound and came hard with his fingers knotted in her hair. Breathing hard, it took him a minute to recover from his stupefied high. Blossom hummed and sat up on her elbows as he slowly pulled out and adjusted his pants.

“Were you really listening to the instructions?” Blossom asked, pushing her sweaty and fast-freezing bangs out of her face.

Brick looped an arm around her waist to pull her against him. “Were you?”

His fingers brought her jaw in line with his, and he kissed her as deeply and longingly as a man who had much more than simply the carnal urge for release on his mind. The tax forms were hopelessly disheveled across the table’s surface.

She looped her arms around his neck. “Not really. We may have to go over them again.”

“Mm.” His red eyes were a dark carmine in the low lamplight, and Blossom felt her heartbeat quicken all over again to have his full and undivided attention.

“It’s after 1 a.m.,” she said.

“They’re not due until Monday.”

“Plenty of time to go over the numbers again.”

He chuckled, low and thrilling. “Only you could get me hard over following rules.”

“So I’ve noticed.”

His eyes fell to her lips. “The return’ll take up the whole weekend.”

“Well, I do have bootcamp with Bubbles on Saturday—”

“Skip it.” He gave her ass a promising squeeze, and Blossom gasped softly. “Some rules are better off broken.”

“You’re terrible,” she accused, as she often did.

“I’m right,” he returned in familiar, teasing kind.

“So you are.” She rose up on her toes to kiss him one more time. It would be a tired night and an early morning back to work, and the weekend couldn’t come soon enough.

After all, they still had the rest of Form 8938 to fill out.

The last time Lando qualified p4 he got a podium 😏

you are 100% right and I am convinced Lando can get a good start and maybe yeet it past Valtteri, as he’s not been the best at starts, especially this year. we’ve seen quite a few times that when there’s extra pressure, Valtteri performed less well and I bet there’s quite a lot of pressure on him right now, with Lewis behind him and Max in front of him. so my prediction is Lando will get a good start, BUT unfortunately the Mercedes just has better pace so I guess eventually he will be overtaken by Lewis. I don’t want to wish anything bad upon Lewis, but last time Lando was on the podium Lewis did get a penalty, so my guess is that something like that has to happen again for Lando to get on the podium again. these are all just my predictions from what I’ve seen this year though, so let’s just hope the McLaren has the pace to get on that podium!! I really hope Lando can finish this year off on a high, as he also started it on one. really hope he feels confident tomorrow after having such a phenomenal quali session, he deserves that!!

I sometimes find it hard to reconcile the fact that my husband is a man.

He has his moments where I’m reminded “yep, he’s a guy” but mostly he is sensitive and supportive, kind and compassionate. Children and animals love him - I joke that he’s like a Disney Princess.

I know those traits aren’t unique to women, but sometimes, after my own experiences and hearing the experiences of other women with men, i find it hard to believe they’re common traits in men.

I know that’s unfair. I know that’s generalisation. But it’s also just how I feel.

I get so angry at men. At the ones who abuse people, obviously, but also the ones that will defend abusers just so that they don’t have to admit there is a problem. The ones that refuse to listen to women (or other men) yet still claim they aren’t sexist. The ones that will say they think rapist deserve the death penalty, but then cry when a known rapist celebrity dies.

My husband isn’t like that. But he is such a rarity. It makes me sad that all the women I know talk about how amazing he is - because yeah, he is, but the way he acts... it should just be normal. They think he’s amazing because he does everything you’d expect from your best female friend - he’s supportive, he encourages me to do things I want to try, when I’m upset he asks me “what’s wrong” instead of “what can I do?”. He’s just in the relationship 100%. I’ve never once felt worried that he’s going to cheat on me or leave me, and I’ve never once felt abused. My relationship shouldn’t be exeptional. It should be the norm.

But how can it, when so many men cling to the backwards ideals and behaviours that hurt the women they supposedly care for?

In my mind there’s a difference between the word “man” and the word “men”. When I think of a man, I think of someone physically male, big, strong, protective. I think of positive masculinity. I wont hate a man unless he gives me a reason to.

But when I think of “men” all I can see is a disgusting hoard of troll creatures constantly fighting each other for dominance, and hurting women to show off to other men how “manly” they are, again, for dominance and power. I will hate men until they give me a reason not to.

It’s kind of like the phrase “a person is smart, but people are stupid”, but in this case, “a man is great, but men are rapists” maybe that’s too harsh, but like so what?

I’m always so greatful that my husband is who he is. Being attracted to men is hard when all you ever hear is horror stories about rape and abuse. I grew up thinking about how I’d react ‘when’ I get raped. Not if. When. Because every adult woman in my family had been raped at least once, if not multiple times. I considered myself lucky that I was never molested (well, that I wasn’t old enough to remember). This was my impression of men growing up.

But despite all that, I never really hated men. I just thought it was just how they were. You don’t hate animals for acting like animals, right?I just thought it was normal. I thought this was just how life was. I thought I was going to get a boyfriend when I was in my late teens, have a couple of kids - he would start hitting me or cheating on me, I would break up with him, he’d abandon the kids and I’d be a single mother for the rest of my life. Same as my mother, same as my grandmother. Same as many of my friends parents. I thought that was normal. This is how many little girls are indoctrinated into being perpetual victims.

But then my husband came and, not to sound cheesy, but he saved me from that life. I have no doubt it would have happened that way if I hadn’t met him. My sister carried on down that path. That could have been me and I’m so greatful it wasn’t.

He saved me just by being a good man. He wasn’t even a man, we were 15. But even as a boy, he was, and still is, a good man. Now I understand that I deserve to be loved, being hit is not normal, and I probably won’t ever be raped because the most likely person to do that to me would be my partner, and he would never do that to me.

Imagine a world where the majority of men were actually good men, and not just... men.

I’m sorry for the rant. I’ve just been really sick of the increasingly open misogyny online lately.

Ending on a good note, me and my husband are celebrating 12 years together tomorrow, and 2 years of marriage. We’re going to go see The Book of Mormon.

“So this is your place. It’s not what you’re used to.” The persons eyes scrutinised the tiny apartment- shocked that Riley would choose such a small scaled place to live in for the next nine months.

“Having a mansion isn’t all what it’s cracked up to be. It can make you miserable and lonely.”

“So what’s going off?”

“The first night I was here, I kissed one of the footballers. The next two nights I stupidly slept with him. His girlfriend did all this damage- I deserved it.” Riley showed the person, her ribs. Shaking her head she knew she was about to be lectured on the matter.

“It takes two to tango Ri. Don’t just blame yourself. I’m starving, shall we order some pizza?”

Leo had contacted Maxwell and after constantly begging, he finally got Riley’s address out of him. Maxwell felt a sting to his heart that she would leave without informing him. Did she not trust him?

Arriving at the block, Leo had hoped that his suspicions were correct. A light is on- I knew it. About to knock on the door, a young spotty teenager arrived just gawking at Leo.

The morning after was the first match the team was playing this season. It was a home match, against their neighbour rivals. The men all got changed into their kits, they all seemed nervous due to it being the first match.

another “college football” short—various residents of plymouth rock college flirt with each other. elsewhere, plymouth rock college tackles on the rhode island reds at the football game, and it seems the reds have a few tricks up their sleeves.

a moonlit night, and the halls of plymouth rock college are bursting with music and dance. some nice shots of the windows outside, looking into the college, silhouette shots of chickens and ducks dancing with each other. a sign outside advertises “TONITE — DANCE and RALLY for BIG GAME TOMORROW — BOOST YOUR TEAM”. inside the dance rages on, the array of poultry giving the band an applause.

time for the spotlight number. four ducks line up, all wearing lettered sweaters. after some miscommunication, they scramble in order to spell out “GLEE CLUB”, singing “along flirtation walk” through their megaphones.

sure enough, outside the campus is a sign tacked to a tree: “FLIRTATION WALK”, decorated with a few hearts pierced by arrows. two turkeys flirt, until the girlfriend spots the audience. the boyfriend glares and drags her close, fanning his feathers so we can’t see their affections. the boyfriend pops back up, waggling his tongue—accentuated with the orlando martin trombone gobble.

meanwhile, two ducks flirt in a fountain. they give a lovestruck sigh, as does a lonely chicken, observing from afar on a bench. the ducks realize they’re being watched and dive into the water, popping out at the top of the fountain, cartoon hearts aplenty. very amusing silent interaction between the ducks and the chicken as the singers continue to warble their song.

the next day, game day. fans pour into the bustling stadium. some interesting animation as the band blares on, the stands completely symmetrical as each half bobs in and out of each other.

neat little milestone—as the plymouth rock college chickens stream out onto the field, the underscore that plays so triumphantly is “frat”. frat would be a looney tunes staple, kind of like powerhouse in its own way. a favorite of carl stalling‘s, and seemingly friz freleng’s. i’ve only seen a small percentage of friz’s shorts (he did direct the most after all), but i know it’s definitely been used in his shorts such as notes to you and yankee doodle daffy. elsewhere, the opposing team, the rhode island reds, also stride confidently onto the team.

the chickens are all getting limbered you for the big game. the umpire eyes his pocket watch, tweeting on his whistle to signal the start of the game. some nice visuals as his face turns green, his feathers thin and his glasses fly off as he exerts so much effort to blow on the whistle.

both teams of chickens line up at individual boxes lined with straw. each box has a metal pipe below, some troughs situated in front of the pipes. a few calls and they’re off... to lay eggs. i love it! i was kinda dreading this one. i suspected it would be another freddy the freshman or bosko the drawback, both relatively mediocre football cartoons. though this isn’t the most exciting, it is a funny concept and mixed up the monotony of the football genre.

duck cheerleaders for the reds cheer on the chickens, drastically improving their egg production. the reds rocket ahead, their 41 looming over the measly 26 held by plymouth rock.

the plymouth rock coach is rightfully distressed, pacing left and right while chuffing on a cigar. a chicken sits on the sideline, the same one from the beginning who was sidelined from the romantic ducks. the chicken hurriedly clucks to the coach, presumably asking if he should play. the duck just terrorizes him and sneers “NYEEEEEEHHHHH!!” (which is great), effectively shutting the poor chicken up.

our first half draws to a close. plymouth rock 30, rhode island reds 75. i love the difference in attitude and walk cycles as the respective teams go to the locker rooms. the reds jog away merrily, chests puffed out proudly while plymouth rock sulks. a nice contrast in moods as the plymouth rock coach chews out the time, whereas the reds are celebrating their staggering lead.

what is the secret to the reds’ success? billiard balls. the coach tosses billiard balls into the gullets of each chicken lined up, giving them extra support to push out. sneaky! yet creative nonetheless. the reds march out of their locker room as the second half begins, stomachs jostling with billiard balls.

with a few calls from the reds, the game is off and running once more. the reds pop out their flow of eggs, all appropriately colored and numbered like billiard balls. of course, no suspicions arise... except for the players on plymouth rock’ team. poor guys! one of the players received a penalty when baby chicks pour out the chute instead of eggs. the umpire docks 15 points of the team, sinking them back from 55 to 40.

back to the anxious, cigar smoking coach, who still refuses to listen to the poor sidelined chicken. nevertheless, he has no choice BUT to listen. 5 minutes are left in the game, the score a whopping 40 to 98. begrudgingly, the coach allows the chicken into the game, who’s absolutely ecstatic.

i’m wondering, was a scene cut? or is this just poor staging? though, at the same time, about 30 seconds remain in the entire short. the chicken hops into its nest, and then we’re met with a crowd scene. after the crowd scene follows a shot of the scoreboard, and a TON of eggs rolling down the chute in plymouth rock’s side, the score rocketing upwards. the score is now 99 to 100.

i ask if a scene was cut because after the scoreboard shut, we cut back to two chickens on plymouth rock’s team glancing at the board, the main chicken now wearing a girdle. it looks as though the teammates plopped a girdle on the chicken and pulled, squeezing out the eggs. this all happened offscreen, but it feels rather accidental and not deliberate. it reduces the flow of the scene and is a bit jarring, like hey, where did that come from? nevertheless. the two ducks whack the chicken on the head with mallets, and two eggs come rolling out, topping off the score at 101 to 100. plymouth rock wins!

a happy end as the poor chicken who had wanted to be in the game for so long is now tossed into the air, surrounded by an armada of fans. iris out.

i actually enjoyed this cartoon, and i didn’t think i would! it reminded me a lot of freddy the freshman, which i didn’t particularly love (nor hate). i’m glad to see i was wrong. granted, it’s not friz’s best work. it becomes slightly repetitive and the novelty of the egg laying wears off after awhile, but it’s still an entertaining concept to think about. the characters are likable enough, shallow as they are—especially the plymouth rock coach. i loved the distinct personalities between the two teams, the confidence of the reds and the sorrow of plymouth rock. this falls into the above mediocre category for me, worth a “one and done” watch just because the concept is entertaining.

“Well, good luck with that when you lie to me. I thought this was my only option. I was happy on my own before…” Katniss turned away, and this time the tears did fall. It was a lie, of course. She had been reasonably content, but Peeta had made her happy. She wasn’t going to give him that power, though.

She ran up the stairs and pushed open Mrs. Mellark’s bedroom door the precise moment Rye was clearly saying: 

“I’m marrying Prim tomorrow and we’ll move to the Seam. I’ll get a job in the coal mines, but so help me I’m taking care of my girl and my baby. I’m not going to have that child grow up not knowing his real parents. I thought I could handle it until I saw what it was like to have the baby move.”

Mrs. Mellark glanced at her son and then at Prim, “You’ll not move to the Seam. Or get a job in the coal mines. No son of mine will ever work there. You’ll stay here. It could be worse I guess. You’re a pretty thing, and most people will forget you’re from the Seam.”

Katniss saw that Mrs. Mellark’s pride had ended up being in Rye and Prim’s favor. The woman was unwilling to see her son live in the Seam, no matter how much she might dislike his bride. Then the woman’s eye found her. “So did you know about this?”

“No,” Katniss replied shortly. “Things would have been different if I had.”

“Well, that certainly poses a problem. You signed those papers that you were pregnant. You’ll be having a visit from Thread and Cray. Unless you are pregnant?” Mrs. Mellark glanced at her stomach. Katniss shook her head. 

The Peacekeepers, with a doctor in tow, visited women who were pregnant to enforce the laws against any type of behavior that could lead to miscarriage. They also inspected women randomly. There were horror stories about the “examinations” Cray had forced on women. Katniss shuddered. 

Katniss went to Peeta’s room and changed into her nightgown. She glanced around the room and, for the first time since her wedding night, regretted their sleeping arrangements. Her resentment against the whole Mellark family grew as she realized that she would have to pay the penalty for everyone else’s lies. She would be the one facing Cray’s “inspections” and abuse. 

The next morning Katniss went home with Prim to stay for a few days and prepare for the wedding. At least, that was the reason she gave everyone. In reality it was because she wanted to get away from them. After her sister went to bed Katniss told her mother the whole story.

“Oh Katniss,” her mother reached out and took her hand. “If only I had known.”

“I can’t believe he didn’t tell me. I would have done the same thing as I did, but I would have also pressured Rye to marry Prim. They do love each other, and it’s better for the baby. Peeta only married me because he was ashamed of his brother marrying a Seam woman.” 

“I don’t think so. Why would he have married you? I think he just wanted to protect his brother from his mother. You must remember: she hadn’t told anyone about her illness. Merle Mellark is on her death bed and she knows it.”

Katniss hesitated, as she thought over her mother’s reasoning. The only thing she could think of was that Peeta was willing to bear the shame of marrying someone like her but didn’t want his brother to go through the scandal. Then again she knew her new mother-in-law well enough to know that if anyone crossed her they quickly regretted it. 

She was still so angry at Peeta and his family regardless of the reason. She helped Prim with her wedding as she tried to stuff down her resentment. She wasn’t very successful, but Prim was so radiantly happy at her marriage that she didn’t even notice how Katniss felt. Katniss didn’t blame her sister. She was marrying the boy she loved.

“Oh Katniss, you must get pregnant soon. Think of it. Our children will be only months apart.” Prim smiled and added, “I don’t think that will be too hard. I saw that very close hug you two had.”

Katniss winced and said sharply, “I’m not planning to get pregnant any time soon.”

“But what will you tell Thread?” Prim asked, suddenly alarmed.

“I had a miscarriage. It’s not uncommon.” Katniss replied. 

“Oh Katniss please be careful.” Prim said. “But as long as he can tell you’ve been trying I suppose it’s all right.”

Katniss didn’t tell her sister that she was still a virgin. She wasn’t sure if the medical tests would be able to tell since her mother had indicated that proofs of virginity were notoriously flawed. With all the hunting Katniss had done more than likely any proof was long gone. But it was a risk she would have to take.

The wedding went off without a hitch. Mrs. Mellark wasn’t well enough to come down so they had the toasting in her room under her watchful blue eyes. Prim had to wear an old dress of Mrs. Everdeen’s that she had worn when she carried Katniss and Prim. It was an pale pink cotton with tiny yellow flowers printed on it. Her stomach was growing larger by the day. Prim looked radiantly happy and glowing, and Rye actually smiled for the first time in what seemed like forever. While Katniss was genuinely glad for her sister, her joy didn’t help the ache in her own heart. 

“Katniss, please, I’m sorry I didn’t tell you.” Peeta’s face looked desperate as he held her hand that night. 

“I just want to know why you didn’t tell me.” Katniss looked up at him.

“Because I didn’t want my brother to get attacked by mom. She didn’t care so much who I married. I was never her favorite son. I’ve always taken care of him. I was afraid you would try talking to her or to Rye, and she’d end up taking out on everyone.”

Katniss sighed. She understood the urge to protect younger siblings. “I get that. I probably would have done that. But now I’m in trouble. Cray’s going to come out, and when I’m not pregnant…” 

“Tell him you lost the baby.” Peeta said. Katniss nodded. 

Things weren’t all right between them, but at least Katniss didn’t feel like throwing a hive of Tracker Jackers over him. She lay down but fought back the terror as she contemplated what might happen. Her only hope lay in lying to Cray over the baby. She tried to hide her discomfort from both Peeta and Prim. Prim was fairly easy to deceive since she was a newly wed with a baby on the way. Katniss tried not to think about what must be going on behind closed doors with her sister and her new husband. As much as it might bother her that Prim was old enough to be married she was glad Prim was spared the horror of the examination. Peeta was harder to deceive. He wasn’t distracted by newly wedded bliss and he could see through Katniss with stunning clarity. He didn’t know that Katniss’s hunting trips had been strictly business or that she had never frequented the Slag Heap. Katniss knew most people thought she was a wild woman who had sex in the woods without a care in the world. Peeta knew she wasn’t doing that now but he must have thought she had done something in her past. Katniss hoped her “reputation” gave her something to use when Cray came. 

Thread and Cray came two weeks later. Katniss let them into the bakery, which was nearly deserted. Peeta and his brothers were at the train station picking up supplies, and Mrs. Mellark was upstairs. Prim was with her mother. For the first time in her life, Katniss wished Mrs. Mellark was up and around. Somehow she suspected the woman wouldn’t be afraid to take on Thread. Then again the woman would have probably fought Katniss more if she wasn’t dying.

“How may I help you?” She asked calmly as the panic fought its way to the surface.

“I understand you are pregnant, Mrs. Mellark?” Thread said as he sat down at the kitchen table.

“I was, sir, but I lost the baby.” Katniss forced herself to speak. She was so genuinely terrified she thought she did a passable job of being grief stricken.

“I understand your sister is also pregnant. And both of you seem to have conceived around the same time. How coincidental…” Thread’s voice trailed off.

“Yes… it was.” Katniss replied. “She’s luckier than I.”

“Mrs. Mellark, I’m sure you won’t mind a short medical examination with Dr. Cray here. We just want to make sure you are physically able to bear a child. You must understand the desperate need our country has for healthy children.” Thread’s eyes narrowed as Katniss stood there. She took a deep breath. An examination. The horror of all women in District 12. 

“Is that really necessary? I don’t like the idea of someone apart from my husband seeing me.” Katniss thought it sounded logical.

“Oh well, I’m a doctor, Mrs. Mellark. I don’t count.” Cray’s eyes filtered over her figure making her skin crawl. Thread gave an imperceptible nod to his companion. 

“Take me upstairs, Mrs. Mellark. It will only take a few minutes. Peacekeeper Thread here will be right outside the door to make sure everything is safe.” Cray’s promise sounded more like a threat, and Katniss had no choice but to do what he asked. She had no recourse. She had no weapons on her, and even if she had her bow, Katniss knew Thread’s gun would kill her long before the arrow was strung. 

“Now Mrs. Mellark, why are you so nervous? You almost remind me of a virgin. Surely a married woman like you shouldn’t be this uncomfortable.” Cray’s eyes fixed on her face as he sat her down on the bed. Katniss couldn’t bear the idea that this was the bed she slept in. With Peeta. Oh Peeta, I’m sorry. 

“I don’t like the idea of a strange man touching me.” Katniss snapped back.

She put on the faded and stained medical gown and lay back on the bed. She was bare beneath it. At first it did seem like a normal medical exam. Her mother performed them often. Katniss wouldn’t have minded if her mother had done this. Cray’s examination only lasted a few minutes. She started to breath a sigh of relief. Maybe he was fooled. 

“Well, Mrs. Mellark, it seems that your hymen is not intact but your vaginal walls are extremely tight, making me think you don’t engage in sexual activity frequently. Then again you are a small woman. I also found no evidence of a recent pregnancy.” Cray’s voice sounded professional but Katniss heard the threat in his voice. 

“I was sure I was pregnant. I lost my period and felt sick. Perhaps I was mistaken.” Katniss felt nausea well up in her stomach. 

Cray reached out and touched her thigh. “Or maybe your husband isn’t doing a good job. Tell me, has he ever even touched you?”

Katniss tried to pull away, but his grip on her body was surprisingly strong and he glanced significantly at the door where Thread was posted. “Of course he has.”

“Well, it sure doesn’t look like it. Tell me, is he a homosexual? Is that why he hasn’t touched you?” Crays leering voice was in her ear now, “I assure you there are others far better at showing you a good time. And getting you pregnant.”

“No, of course not.” Katniss knew of District 13’s hatred of people they deemed “homosexuals”. People had been killed or forced into prisons where they came home scarred and broken shells of their former selves. Nobody willingly admitted to being homesexual. People had even been accused without proof. Katniss realized she had been spared the accusation by her close friendship with Gale. Otherwise her outspoken dislike of marriage and children would have probably made her a potential target. Cray was just trying to get her. He had no proof of Peeta being one. He was only trying to frighten her. 

“Well, Mrs. Mellark, I have to remind you that homosexuality is treatable with proper care. If you have any evidence of your husband being a homosexual, I will have to know. I assure you that he will be taken care of and returned safely to you.” Cray’s hand moved up her thigh. Katniss fought back a scream.

“He’s not.” She gasped out. 

“Well, then maybe you are. Maybe this whole thing was you hiding…You certainly seem a frigid bitch.” Cray’s hand slipped higher. Katniss shook her head. She felt like throwing up. 

“Katniss.” She could hear Peeta’s voice outside the door. She got the courage to move away from Cray. 

“Are you ok?” He sounded frantic. 

Katniss turned to Cray and said, “Are you done, Doctor? I assure you that neither my husband or I are homosexuals. As for the pregnancy, I was mistaken. I must have had the flu.”

Cray turned to her and said, “Well, we’ll go now, but if you haven’t fixed your little problem I’m sure I can help you.”

Katniss shuddered as he opened the door. Peeta and Thread were standing there. Cray said smoothly, “Well, Mr. Mellark, I’m sure that you will be glad to know that your wife is in good health. No evidence of any abnormalities. I see no reason for any fertility issues. You’ll just have to be patient.”

Thread noticed how Peeta’s face tightened and how he looked about ready to attack Cray. It was the look his face got before wresting matches. Thread seemed to notice because he said, “Come on, Dr. Cray. We have a few other people to see.”

“I’ll be back in a few months to make sure that you are following the treatment I proposed.” Dr. Cray stared at Katniss for a few seconds before turning and walking down the stairs. Katniss waited until she heard the door click below; then, she pushed Peeta aside and flew to the bathroom, barely making it before she lost everything she had eaten all day. Her skin still seemed to crawl and her body felt as it was trying to expel her stomach. 

She was vaguely aware of Peeta wetting a wash cloth and laying it against her forehead. She sat up and let him finish washing her face. She still couldn’t stop shaking, but she let out a shuddering sigh when he pulled her close. It had to be her fault. What could she have done? Perhaps if she had lied more convincingly they wouldn’t have examined her?

“Katniss, what happened? I came home to find them there. You’re scaring me.” He rubbed her back and she felt the tears start to fall. 

“I can’t…” Katniss couldn’t stop them now that they wanted to come. 

“Ok. Just answer me this. Did he touch you?” She could feel the tension in his body even though he kept his voice calm.

“Yes, but not…” Katniss tried to explain but saying the words made it all seem real. She hoped he understood without her getting more explicit. 

“Please, you have to promise me you won’t do anything. Promise me that. Ok…It will just hurt us all.” Katniss lifted her head and looked into his eyes. They had grown icy cold and almost scary in their intensity.

“I…That man. What he did…” Peeta glanced down at her and then said, “I shouldn’t have left. I should have stayed with you. If I had stayed, they wouldn’t have been able to do that.”

“It’s not your fault. And you know what would happen if you did anything against Cray.” Katniss knew how the whole family would be punished in horrible ways. 

“I know. I won’t do anything. I promise for your sake.”

After what seemed like hours, he pulled her up and carried her into the room they called the nursery. It was really just a storage closet. “I’m going to get Rye and Prim to switch rooms with us. It will be better anyway since it’s closer to the nursery and farther away from mom.”

“Thank you.” Katniss laid down on the blankets he had laid out for her. “Don’t be gone too long. Please?”

“It won’t take long.” He promised.

Katniss lay down again and stared at the wall that seemed to glow in the late afternoon sun. She remembered how warm and wonderful she had felt in this room kissing her husband. The sense of pleasure she had experienced hadn’t lessened. She had known then that somehow this would have happened anyway. But now all she could remember was the way it had felt to be touched without permission and helpless she had been. The worst of it had been the fact that there had been nothing she could have done. Even if she had been armed, the Capitol would have been sure to retaliate for killing a Peacekeeper. 

“I moved all our things into the other room.” Peeta came back into the room and knelt beside her on the floor. 

“Thank you.” Katniss whispered. “I’m sorry I’m being silly…”

“You’re not silly. You’re so damn strong. All the things you’ve done. Taking care of Prim. Marrying me. I love you so much. I just can’t handle what they’ve done to you.” Katniss could feel his shoulders shaking and the warm, wetness of tears. 

After awhile she said softly, “ I better tell you what he said. He told me that…I…ugh I…I can’t say it. It’s so humiliating…”

“You don’t have to tell me.”

“I do. He knew I was still a virgin. And then he started to accuse you of being a homosexual. When I denied it, he said maybe I was the one. That’s when he kept touching me. And saying that if…if I wanted someone to help me… I should go to him…”

“ Shit. That means he’ll come back. Or…” Peeta shook his head looking more and more disturbed by the second.

“Or he’ll have one of us taken to the hospital for “treatment”.” Katniss finished. They called it hijacking. Nobody survived hijacking. They were broken messes of people afterwards. 

“That won’t happen. I won’t let that happen.”

“No you won’t. Listen, this would have happened. We just got sidetracked with finding out about Rye. It’ll be fine. We’ll just do what they want. And maybe…” Katniss took a deep breath and tried to say the rest. “I really liked kissing you.”

A touch of a smile hit his lips, but his face looked just as distraught as before, “Ok. But promise me that you’ll tell me if anything makes you uncomfortable.”

“I’ll be fine,” Katniss murmured. She wanted to kiss him to try to wash away the horrible feel of that man’s hands on her. She wanted to regain some control of her body. She leaned forward until her lips touched his. It was a different kind of kiss. Soft, gentle and tender. 

“Can you eat something?” Peeta asked when she pulled away. Katniss nodded suddenly aware of how depleted her body felt. 

He made her cheese buns, an unimaginable luxury for her, and sat there watching her eat them. Prim came home, and Katniss did her best to hide what happened from her sister. Fortunately just talking about Thread and Cray’s visit was enough to explain Katniss’s distress. Prim’s face grew more and more alarmed.

“I’m sorry. It’s my fault. I should have gone to the home.” 

“No, it’s not your fault. It’ll be ok. I’ll get pregnant soon, and then he won’t have anything to use against me.” Katniss couldn’t bear the idea of Prim being the one to face this abuse. Better her than her sister. 

Prim seemed to have faced the enormity of what her sister had faced to protect her. She stopped crying but kept glancing at Katniss. When Peeta left to take care of something in the bakery she whispered, “Is Peeta treating you right? Are you…happy?”

Happy? Katniss didn’t know the meaning of the word, but she had felt brief flashes of it. Certainly she had to admit Peeta made her happier. He gave her a sense of peace and serenity. He offered her the support she needed. He was like the dandelion she had picked long ago after he had given her the bread. “Yeah, he does.”

Things seemed to change between them after that day. Katniss woke up nearly every night fighting nightmares about Cray and his horrible threats. But every time she woke up screaming Peeta was there to sooth her and remind her that it was just a nightmare. She couldn’t imagine sleeping alone anymore. They started kissing a lot too. Gentle kisses that meant comfort and safety. Quick kisses that meant familiarity. And the kind of kiss Katniss was becoming increasingly accustomed to. The passionate, soul searching, knee weakening kiss that made her head spin. Once they started, it seemed to escalate all on its own. The only problem was that there were always people around in a crowded house. On nice days they would spend the evening in the meadow lying on the grass and looking up at the sky.

One night they were lying on the grass watching the sunset when he said, “I wish I could freeze this moment in time and live in it forever.”

Katniss had her head in his lap weaving a flower crown. Her hair was unbound because he had taken a liking to playing with it. It didn’t bother her since she could braid it quickly back into neatness before going home. “I’ll allow it.” 

She sat up rapidly and flung the flowers aside before diving in and pressing her lips to his. Almost immediately she realized that this was one of “those” kisses. She loved how the heat seemed to grow and expand within her, but she hated how she was always left wanting. They were extremely careful to avoid anything that might cause her to get the panic to come back. Once he had laid his hand on her thigh and she had freaked out. He always let her control their encounters. She appreciated the tenderness he always showed her. 

Katniss shifted until she was practically sitting in his lap. She couldn’t suppress a tiny smile at how absolutely wonderful she felt at this very moment. She let out a tiny squeak when he pressed a kiss against the sensitive skin of her neck. Hearing her reaction, he continued trailing kisses against her neck until he reached a spot right below her ear that made her moan. “Keep doing that and I’ll really allow it.” She murmured.

“Hmm…good to know.” She could hear the laughter in his tone. It was nice that they could laugh even now. Her inexperience didn’t feel quite so insurmountable when they didn’t take things so seriously. She decided that she was going to take a step forward. Taking a deep breath, she took his hand and pressed it against her breast. “You can touch me…here.”

It took a bit of exploring to figure everything out. She discovered that she was ticklish right under her ribs which she suspected he would use to his advantage some time when they weren’t feeling all this pleasure. She unbuttoned her plain blouse, hoping nobody was around to see. The meadow was always deserted, but it still made her nervous. Her equally plain bra hid her tiny breasts. She knew that compared to the town girls’ breasts, they were unimpressive, and she hoped Peeta wouldn’t be disappointed. 

Peeta fixed his eyes on her face as if he was afraid she would be angry if he looked down. Katniss learned forward and kissed him again to cover up her embarrassment at being so exposed. He reached out a hand and touched her so gently she relaxed against him. There was absolutely nothing to be afraid of. She smiled again and nodded slightly. He gained confidence and began putting those kneading skills to good use. Katniss couldn’t suppress the soft gasping moans that passed her lips. When he started using both lips and his hands in combination, she cried out softly, “Ohhh.”

Her body was rushing towards something she had experienced before by herself, but it felt very different when it wasn’t a simple case of relieving a vague bodily need. Somehow she knew this wouldn’t be enough. He lifted his head and whispered, “Can I touch you?”

Then the memories came hurtling back. The examination. Her stomach tightened. The idea of anyone’s fingers touching her between her legs made her nervous. Her breasts were fine since Cray hadn’t touched her there. “I… I don’t know.”

She saw the sadness fill his eyes. The warm feeling was slowly dissipating with the memories. She didn’t want to lose it. “Can we try something else?”

“Would it be ok if you…ah… touch yourself?” he asked.

Katniss considered and then nodded. “I think so.”

It seemed to do the trick. Katniss wasn’t afraid when her own hand slipped between the layers of her pants. She was in control. She pushed aside the disappointment at how even now her life had been damaged by what had happened. At least this was familiar though it felt so different. Soon though, there was absolutely nothing to think about besides the coiling inside of her body and the sensation of his tongue sliding across her tight bud. And then it happened. The coil broke, and she cried out as warm wave of pleasure washed over her. 

“Was that ok?” he asked and she almost laughed. Who asked that sort of question when it was clear it had been way more than ok? Instead she only nodded and took a second to catch her breath.

“Of course it was, silly.” She whispered as she started to reach for the button on his pants. He made a noise of protest, but she added, “I want to.”

It was true that she had absolutely no fear trying to give him the same kind of feeling she had experienced. But she still flushed because while she had seen her share of naked men because of her mother’s healing she hadn’t been in this situation before. He helped her to figure out the movements and she felt a surge of triumph at the way he seemed to lose control. She didn’t know what she was doing, but whatever she was doing seemed to be doing the trick. She tried following certain cues, repeating what made him groan. 

Afterwards she wiped her hands on the grass and curled up beside him against the tree. It was growing late, and she knew they ought to go home, but she didn’t want to. She was afraid that once she went back into the place where everything had happened, she would be scared again. 

As the days passed Katniss found her life changing in more ways than one. Prim was getting bigger by the day and was perpetually cranky due to her lack of mobility. Mrs. Mellark was not interested as she swore the baby was a boy due to the way that Prim carried the baby. Katniss’s mom said that was something of a myth but Mrs. Mellark wouldn’t have cared. Her health had seemingly rallied after Katniss had found a combination of roots that limited her pain and gave her energy. The woman had resumed coming downstairs to boss her children around. She seemed to have a certain grudging respect for Katniss although she still hated her. Prim was merchant looking enough to be accepted with half-hearted approval, but she still treated Peeta and Rye as if they were the dust off of her feet. Katniss hated that but realized she couldn’t do anything. There was nothing she could do to make the woman start acting like a mother. 

On the bright side,  almost every night she and Peeta explored each other’s bodies under cover of darkness. She started to understand things about herself and him that she had never really thought of. It was a wanton, completely useless kind of pleasure that would neither help them with the situation of Cray or get her pregnant. But it didn’t matter. She learned to crave the sensation of heat and hunger and the overpowering relief of release. The first time he asked to use his mouth on her she was hesitant. It wasn’t that she was scared exactly it was more that it was unfamiliar. She knew people did it all the time, she had heard girls at school talking, but it still seemed strange. But it felt so overpoweringly amazing she knew they had been right. She had to press a pillow against her face and nearly smother herself to keep the rest of the house from knowing exactly what they were up to. 

“Don’t be so smug.” Katniss tried scowling as she saw the wide smile tip his face as he pulled her closer and drew the sheet up higher. It wasn’t a very good attempt though.

“I’ll be smug when I make you scream sometime.” He replied with a smirk. Katniss raised her brows. He had gotten pretty bold, especially when talking dirty. She secretly liked it. 

“There are people in the house.” Katniss whispered. 

“I know. That’s why I’ll know I’ve succeeded.” Katniss glared at him. She knew he had a competitive streak. And the worst of it was she felt sure he would win the bet. 

One night not long after she said, “I’m ready.”

It was scary. Her memories of what had happened filtered through her mind. The awful man’s description of her body and his hands on her haunted her. Her mother had indicated that being nervous made things more painful, so she forced herself to take deep breaths. 

“Are you sure?” he whispered. She nodded. Then she pressed her lips to his in a kiss that said that she trusted him. And yes, she loved him. It seemed hard to remember a time when she didn’t. It had grown up and taken root inside of her so slowly she hadn’t realized until now exactly how much she loved him. 

Peeta was so gentle with her. She had wanted to hurry through this in her usual reckless way. It was far less frightening. But he kept slowing her movements down even while letting her set the pace. She glanced down into the blue eyes that looked so lovingly into her own and focused on the bond between them. Somehow she knew that in this moment he was just as much at her mercy as she was mentally to him. The anxiety was probably the worst. Certainly it was worse than the pain which wasn’t that bad and Katniss was no stranger to aches and pains anyway. The fear surfaced again and again, making her breath catch and causing her to lose her rhythm. She fought through it, focusing on his face and how much he meant to her. She knew that this time there was no way that she would come, but it didn’t matter. This moment was a huge victory. 

“Katniss… you’re so…beautiful,” he choked out. Katniss leaned down to kiss him. It had been a long time since she had thought herself beautiful. Maybe not since her father died. 

“Let go,” she murmured when she saw the telltale signs that he had reached the brink. The pleasure still lingered in her body, but she had to admit that this experience had been difficult. She believed that soon the anxiety would go away. Until it did, she intended to fight it for all she was worth. 

“Katniss, are you ok?” His eyes looked so sharply into her own that she knew she hadn’t fooled him. 

“Yes,” she replied. 

When he had a chance to catch his breath she said, “It was hard. I mean, after what happened I knew it would be difficult. But I’m glad I did it. And…”

“And what.” He asked. 

“I think I love you,” she replied. 

“What can I do to persuade you to know so?” Peeta grinned and took her hand under the covers.

“Keep being you,” she replied, “And I’m already there. I’m just not very good at talking.”

She glanced over to see the biggest smile on his face. She couldn’t help a small smile of her own as she snuggled closer. Maybe she was pregnant, even now. The idea of children scared her, but she also knew that any child of theirs would be well taken care of. It gave her a strange thrill to imagine that.

Prim’s baby was born on the day that had once been Reaping Day. It was now known as Independence Day. Little Bram Mellark was a healthy, extremely loud baby that took Prim a tremendous amount of pain to deliver. Katniss was desperately hoping her suspicions were wrong, and she wasn’t pregnant as she saw her sister in agony. When her nephew was born, Katniss knew that he held a special place in her heart, just like his mother. She hadn’t imagined loving anyone in quite the same way as Prim. But Prim’s little boy was worming himself into her heart at a rapid pace. The only person who was disappointed was Mrs. Mellark who had been hoping for a girl. 

Cray and Thread came back, but by the time they did Peeta was there, and he didn’t allow either of them a second alone with Katniss. Katniss wouldn’t have let him leave anyway. She was pretty sure she was pregnant. Her mother had examined her and said she was sure of it. A three minute test revealed that her suspicions were correct. She was producing yet another child to replace the terrible losses of life due to poverty, disease and the war in Panem. 

“Congratulations, Mrs. Mellark. It seems your efforts paid off.” Cray said stonily before taking his leave. Katniss kept her composure until he left and then collapsed in a heap to process the whole situation. 

“He’s not coming back.” She said at last. “And I’m pregnant.”

Peeta didn’t seem to know whether to be over the moon with joy over the baby or upset at having seen Cray’s face. Katniss wasn’t sure either. She decided that whatever she was feeling was acceptable. 

“Please, just stay with me.” It would be impossible to make it through the months of uncertainty and fear without him by her side.

“Always,” he promised.

Violet Mellark was born on a wet day in April. She proved to be far less boisterous than her cousin. The moment she opened her stunning blue eyes Katniss was entranced.

“She’s so beautiful.” Peeta whispered as he kissed her tiny cheek. Katniss positioned Violet so they were both holding her. Violet’s eyes were darker than her father’s and closer to a silvery violet color Katniss had never seen before. Her hair was the same Seam black, but her skin had only a faint olive tinge to it. 

Mrs. Mellark, who had been once again slowly failing, had seemed to hang on out of pure force of will. Once she saw her granddaughter, it seemed as if she was finally satisfied. Katniss actually saw a smile cross the woman’s stern face. She seemed almost satisfied with Katniss for finally breaking the line of boys and producing a girl. A girl with such beauty, too. 

Katniss sat by the window with the baby in her arms. Prim had just left the room to change Bram and put him to bed. The sunset was just ending. She looked down at Violet and said softly, “I guess someday I’ll have to tell you about how your parents met and got married. And how you were made. But just know that it’s worth it.”

And then she began to sing. The night came on but she didn’t look up to Peeta watching her with so much love and adoration. She was so focused on the subtle rise and fall of Violet’s chest. It would be ok.
