hey! I just wanted to say that I LOVED your analysis on dead to me S2! completely agreed with it! though, I did want to ask if you had any thoughts on the parallels and juxtaposition of steve+judy having to hide ted's dead vs. jen+judy hiding steve's death because I noticed there's a LOT of overlap there (jen/steve telling judy "don't do that" or "keep your mouth shut" and their general manipulation of her, as well as references to how Judy's done this before)? thoughts?
Thank you so much! I had a lot of fun writing the analysis and I’m really glad you enjoyed it. :D
I think the parallel you bring up is a really important one. Season 1 and Season 2 are sort of twisted mirrors of each other, and it was so hard to watch Jen become so consumed and overwhelmed by exactly what she’s done and how to hide it from everyone (including Judy, even as Judy is helping her!) that she ends up repeating some of Steve’s behavior patterns.
That parallel, and how unfair it is to Judy, makes the climax in 2x9 even more meaningful to me. Steve never breaks out of his own asshole tendencies to actually *see* Judy’s suffering. Sure, he apologizes all the time for being a jerk, and Judy always says “It’s okay” because it’s too scary to even begin to explore how not-okay things are. He never changes or learns or grows, and you don’t get the sense that he would have become a better person if Jen hadn’t killed him. But when Jen finally tells Judy what really happened the night of Steve’s death and the simmering conflict comes to a head, Judy lets Jen see how much pain it causes her and how much pain she’s causing herself. When Jen stops asking her to hit her with the car and watches Judy hitting her own body, it’s like Jen’s both looking in a mirror and looking fully at Judy for the first time.
When Steve verbally abuses Judy, he doesn’t lose any of his selfhood. When Jen lashes out at Judy, calls her out for the way those abusive cycles repeat in her life, and then calls herself “a piece of shit,” you really feel the damage to Jen’s own self-concept. (Which doesn’t excuse the prior behavior, of course, but does become an important moment where things shift and a cycle does break.)
Because this show loves its parallel structures so much, I perhaps naively went into season 2 thinking it would be about Jen and Judy being “even” in some way, because now they’re each the reason the other’s male partner is dead. And while there’s a lot of grief in that situation, I thought there might be a kind of sick satisfaction in the evenness. But I didn’t account for the *way* Jen killed Steve, and how tormented she would be by that night and by what it does to her as Judy’s best friend/partner and what it does to her as a mother who now yells at and lies to her children on a regular basis. I thought it was so perfect that when Jen returns to the grief group it’s because of the loss of her own mother so many years ago. Ted isn’t really a part of this season’s story, and Jen and Judy aren’t even with each other or on perfectly parallel tracks until they reveal themselves to each other more fully in 2x9, and the shared events of 2x10 seem likely to entwine them even more deeply.
Thanks again for the ask! :D I feel like I went off into a tangent of talking about my favorite ep of the season, but I loved your question and would be very happy to hear any thoughts you have on the new season and the structure of the story!
