Hector's Dolphins are the smallest dolphin species and are found only in the waters of New Zealand. As we discussed in our #whaletalespodcast #dolphinawarenessmonth episode, these dolphins were found by cephologists and given to Sir James Hector to describe and name. #whaletales #hectorsdolphins #dolphins #dolphinsareawesome #podcast #dolphinpodcast #storytelling #dolphinsofinstagram #mauisdaolphins #newzealand https://www.instagram.com/p/CNQPMUEnVhs/?igshid=ojyvz5w6vde1

DOLPHIN GIVING BIRTH! The original and full length video of this can be found on YouTube and was shared back in 2012. Not so sure that having people in such close proximity during the birth is a good thing though. Reposted from @king.of.ocean.us - Reposted from @mmrenthusiasts - Dolphin Birth🐬 Dolphin mothers give birth to the calf by releasing the tail of the offspring first, to avoid tjat the new dolphin gets drown. The mother nourishes the calf for up to 18 months with milk produced by her body.🐬📸 @theoceanamy ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #dolphinlove #dolphinlover #dolphinlovers #dolphin #dolphinwatching #marinemammals #whalewatching ⠀ #killerwhales #orque #killerwhale #wearetheorca #nofishnoblackfish #dolphins #whales #orcawhale #humpbackwhales #orca #commondolphin #bottlenosedolphin #hectorsdolphins #duskydolphin #delfines #delfine #delfines🐬 #delfini #discoverocean #orcas #wildlifeconservation #viralvideos ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ - #regrann https://www.instagram.com/p/BuHzjOTgPG0/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=u549hmh22la8

My #hectorsdolphins are finished and will be up for sale on eBay, or directly from me. Every time we loose a species forever, I feel like a bit of nature’s soul has been chipped away 😢 A percentage of the sale will be going to @wwf - this text is taken from their site. Hector’s dolphins are the smallest and rarest marine dolphins in the world. They have distinct black facial markings, short stocky bodies and a dorsal fin shaped like a Mickey Mouse ear. There is a subspecies of Hector’s dolphin known as Maui’s dolphin, that is critically endangered and estimated to have a population of only 55. They are found only in the shallow coastal waters along western shores of New Zealand’s North Island #arttoheal #art #stippleart#artfromtheheart#dotart#inkart#inkyheart#stippleart#originalartfromtheartist#lineart#artist#penandinkart#blackandwhiteart#dotart#pointillism#lineart#penandink#surrealbeauty#beautifulbizarremagazine#artforsale#beautifulbizzare #dolphinart#artfornature#rarestdolphinsintheworld #smallestdolphinsintheworld #artfornaturelovers #artforwwf (at Birmingham, United Kingdom) https://www.instagram.com/p/CdxfZoLOn55/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Out of the deep a small pod of Hector’s dolphins appear, making our cruise a success. These dolphins are only found in the waters of New Zealand and are the smallest of the dolphin species swimming the southern ocean. Wow.

It's #FunFactFriday! #DYK that the Hectors Dolphin is a small cetacean species (1.2-1.6 m) found only in the coastal waters of New Zealand? These dolphins can be divided into two subspecies: The (still named) Hector's dolphin found around the South Island and the critically endangered Maui's dolphin found around the North Island. #whaletales #didyouknow #funfact #trivia #dolphins #dolphinsareawesome #newzealand #mauisdolphins #hectorsdolphins #dolphinsofinstagram #endangered https://www.instagram.com/p/CGsVxQhrl39/?igshid=c6rpv30skm62

Hector’s dolphins and their close relative the Maui’s dolphin live only in New Zealand and are both the smallest and rarest marine dolphins on earth. Entanglement in gill and trawl nets has devastated Hector’s and Maui’s dolphins to near extinction. Unless things change, Hector’s and Maui’s dolphins will become extinct. Like the Kiwi, of which there are some 70,000, Hector’s and Maui’s dolphins are a national treasure, which New Zealand safeguards on behalf of the world. China's Yangtze River dolphin was officially declared extinct in 2007. It was the first dolphin species to be driven from our planet by human activity. Now, New Zealand, a country that lives by its unspoiled environmental reputation, is on course to let the first marine cetacean die out. NABU International Foundation for Nature works together with marine biologists and conservationists in New Zealand in order to secure the future for Maui dolphins. The Foundation seeks to influence policy and the fisheries industry, by taking action and educating the public about the problem. Achieving protection for the rarest marine dolphin species in the world is one of the most urgent tasks for conservation today. Only 42 Maui's dolphins in New Zealand! Living off the coast of New Zealand, the Hector's dolphins are endangered and Maui dolphins are critically endangered, threatened with extinction. NABU International is committed to the survival of the endangered marine mammals. #hectorsdolphins#mauisdolphins#racingextinction#smallestdolphin🐬🙏💕💔

Hector the Dolphin So chuffed to see this little Hector's Dolphin and several of his/her mates while out on the @blackcatcruises on Friday. They grow to a maximum size of 1.5m long and are amongst the worlds smallest marine Dolphins, not to mention that they are also sadly very few in number now. The South Islands total population numbers around 15000 animals, with the east coast population (which is a sub-group of the overall population) numbering around 9000. (Ref: Department of Conservation) The majority of the things I photograph are stationary, or at the very least not moving in a fast, highly erratic fashion, so capturing a sharp image was certainly challenging. I wanted to make sure that whatever image I captured was sharp throughout, so opted for an aperture of f11 which meant increasing the ISO to 400 and resulted in a shutter speed of 1/320 sec. @departmentofconservation_ @akaroa_nz @akaroa_and_the_bays #bankspeninsula #nz #southisland #doc #hectorsdolphin #blackcatcruise #endangeredspecies (at Akaroa) https://www.instagram.com/p/BpboxfbF34e/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=cwjpyrfjbf6p

Hector's and Maui's Dolphins are the smallest dolphin species in the world, and are also the most endangered of becoming extinct. These dolphins are endemic to New Zealand, and prefer shallow coastal waters with depths less than 100 meters. They live about 7 kilometers off the coasts and can reach estuaries, river mouths, and shallow bays. The Maui's Dolphin is a sub-species of Hector's Dolphin that lives in the North Island of New Zealand. There is believed to only be only 55 individuals left of this sub-species! Hector's Dolphin inhabits the South Island of New Zealand and is more abundant, but still threatened with extinction as well. These are extremely slow growing animals (reproducing every 2-4 years) thaat have a very limited global distribution. The main threat to these dolphins that led them to such low numbers was entanglement in gillnets. To protect these unique dolphin species, they have been placed on CITES Appendix II, banning their trade around the world. The New Zealand Government has created two protected areas to promote the conservation of C. hectori, and it is thought that these areas have contributed to reduced mortality in recent years. The Banks Peninsula Marine Mammal Sanctuary was established in 1988 under the Marine Mammals Protection Act to protect Hector’s dolphins. The 1,170 km² sanctuary extends 70 nautical miles alongshore around the Banks Peninsula to the Rakaia River and out to 4 nautical miles offshore. The protected area established for Maui’s dolphins stretches for 210 nautical miles along the west coast of the North Island out to 4 nautical miles offshore. Although this area was closed to gillnetting under the Fisheries Act in 2003, gillnetting has continued inside the harbors, and trawling is restricted only within the first nautical mile offshore. It's #funfactfriday! Did you know Maui's dolphins are threatened with extinction, and are the worlds rarest marine dolphin? There could be as few as 60. They are found only in New Zealand and are easy to ID-they have a rounded dorsal fin which looks like Mickey Mouse ear as well as black mask, fins and tail. They are smaller than an adult human growing to 1.2-1.4m long, and weighing about 50 kg. #endangeredspeciesday⠀ #whaletales #mauisdolphins #hectorsdolphins #newzealand #dolphins #didyouknow https://www.instagram.com/p/CAN-FAVH76C/?igshid=cjipdjurhjnq
