People who mainly ship side couples in any mxtx novel are interesting and a little delusional (me included) cause when you stick to the side of people who will write full on essays on that couple and make it so you think damn mxtx might as well have made them canon

And then you leave that bubble and actually read the novels and figure out that 70% of them had like one major scene alone together and rest was just crumbs that the shippers put a magnifying glass over, and that said crumbs are burnt cause they always end so so badly...

honestly xie lian is no obstacle to huaxuan as a ship because if for a second hua cheng was like, gege i love you so much but i have to be honest that he xuan and i kind of had a thing a few centuries ago... xie lian would be INTO IT. xie lian is so aggressively polite, welcoming, and considerate of black water at any point they do anything connected to him, in the black water arc he goes on a long speech about how impressively courageous scholar he was despite excruciating loss and injustice, (hua cheng subtly speaking about the suffering the victims of the reverend endured in he xuan’s forced silence, and xie lian is like hold my beer) he also relates heavily to the stories of scholar he’s misfortunes, xie lian specifically notices (and sighs over) how S E X Y and perfect ming yi’s array handwriting is, and the entire: “Looking at [Hua Cheng], Xie Lian couldn’t help but remember the saying: ‘for men to look handsome, they must dress in all black’. He thought deeply about the truth of this statement.” Fact! Xie Lian’s type is grumpy men dressed in black! I am THIS close to shipping Xie Lian and He Xuan but I don’t feel the world is ready. But if Hua Cheng even brought up apologetically a crush he had on He Xuan hundreds of years ago Xie Lian WOULD be like Understandable! Why don’t we invite him over?

He Xuan stares after him as he hurries from the room, struck by sudden realization.

He's less interested in the new scroll Xie Lian found as he is in simply… spending time with him.

Does he have a friend?

He senses Hua Cheng's grin before he sees it, whipping around to glare at the other Calamity.

"I didn't say anything," Hua Cheng teases him.

"Good," He Xuan snaps, turning back.

"You see why I waited for him," Hua Cheng says. It's not a question.

He Xuan is instantly on guard.

He opens his mouth to - defend himself? What will that do, if Crimson Rain Sought Flower is convinced he's encroaching on his territory? He knows he's not as powerful as -

"Calm down," Hua Cheng says. "You're fine."

"He's yours," He Xuan says, short and clipped. "I won't -"

"Gege is his own person," Hua Cheng says, and now there's a hint of danger in his voice. "I won't shackle him."

He Xuan turns around again, staring at him.

"He'll always come back to me," Hua Cheng says, eye fixed on He Xuan. "And if you treat him badly…"

He trails off, not needing to finish his threat.

Xie Lian bounds back into the room. "A-Xuan!" he says, his smile blinding. "Look, it's at least a few centuries old -"

He Xuan glances down at the scroll, feeling dazed.

Xie Lian rambles on beside him. Behind him, Hua Cheng's presence is relaxed, as unthreatening as a ghost king can be.

He looks up at Xie Lian, and his gaze is met with that brilliant smile.

He feels like he's come home.

He'll always come back to me, Hua Cheng had said. I won't shackle him.

For a moment, given implicit permission, He Xuan allows his imagination free rein: his fingers intertwined with Xie Lian's, his lips on Xie Lian's soft hair.

He wants that.

Xie Lian points to some sentence, and He Xuan nods in acknowledgement, mind whirling.

Color begins to seep back into the world. Golden sunlight filters through the depths of his waterlogged heart.

For the first time since his revenge turned to poison in his stomach, he wants.

   It’s  with  great  reluctance  that  He  Xuan  agrees  to  posing  for  pictures  ;  moreso  for  Xie  Lian’s  sake  than  anything  else.  He’d  have  no  problem  telling  Hua  Cheng  no  and  let  the  older  ghost  king  pout  over  it.  It’d  more  in  his  taste  to  simply  not  be  involved  at  all  ,  or  being  the  one  to  take  the  pictures  if  he  had  to  participate  in  some  way.  

   It  felt  awkward  and  uncomfortable  ,  like  he  was  a  skeleton  left  in  a  clearing  those  still  living  had  wandered  into.  He’d  never  posed  for  paintings  in  life  and  in  death  he’d  remained  nearly  entirely  isolated  besides  Hua  Cheng  or  playing  as  Ming  Yi.  But  he  complied  to  the  request  all  the  same  ,  making  for  a  rather  stark  contrast  to  the  scenery.  In  his  domain  he’d  blend  in  ;  here  on  a  different  beach  the  dark  aesthetic  was  quite  the  beacon  of  attention  even  if  it  was  just  the  three  of  them

   After  the  last  photo  was  taken  and  seemed  to  meet  Hua  Cheng’s  standards  ,  He  Xuan  peeled  away  from  the  other  two  and  the  chairs  to  wade  into  the  water  that  welcomed  him  back.  A  single  day  had  produced  more  proof  of  his  existence  than  his  entirely  life  and  several  centuries  of  his  afterlife  as  well.  Funny  how  that  worked  sometimes.  

   His  fingers  trailed  through  the  water  ,  feeling  at  how  it  lapped  at  him  and  the  waves  crashing  like  an  excited  puppy  reuniting  with  its  owner  after  days  apart.  A  small  but  genuine  smile  rose  to  his  lips  faintly  ,  hearing  the  other  two  chatting  in  the  background.  He  Xuan  didn’t  pay  it  much  mind  until  he  heard  the  camera  shutter  click  and  his  gaze  snapped  towards  where  the  other  two  were  looking  pretty  pleased  with  themselves  and  looking  at  the  camera.  Little  did  the  ghost  King  know  what  when  one  of  them  was  busy  with  him  ,  the  other  was  sneaking  pictures  of  them  and  vise  versa  throughout  the  day  ,  filling  the  role  with  both  posed  photos  and  photos  taken  secretly  or  by  surprise.

  “  What  are  you  two  doing  ?  “  He  Xuan  raised  his  eyebrows  ,  suspicion  circling  as  he  began  to  move  out  of  the  water  to  return  to  see  what  they  were  looking  at.  But  judging  by  Hua  Cheng’s smug  expression  and  Xie  Lian’s  delighted  expression  ,  he had  a  good  idea.  That  didn’t  mean  he  wasn’t  going  to  check.

'Rainy' with either HeHuaLian or LiuShen please?

Hua Cheng would be the first to admit that living together with a water type demon did come with a lot of downsides. The fact that he had to change out their silk sheets and pillows regularly cause they would start moulding in the constant humidity He Xuan required to feel comfortable for example, or the fact that there was always a slightly briny, oceany smell to everthing he owned now. Or like the random pieces of bone popping up everywhere, from his teacup to his gnawed up boots, courtesy of their resident water demon´s surprisingly playful pet fish. Not to mention that he had to deal with old fishbreath´s  mercurial temper on a more or less daily basis now, as attached to the hip as the other Ghost King had become to their Xie Lian over the course of the months and years they had spend together so far.

But he had to admit, to himself at least, that all the mouldy sheets and gnawed shoes were worth it when he could hear his Gege laugh like this, carefree and happy, curled up underneath his umbrella in the pouring rain with him while He Xuan played with the rain, shaping it in a myriad of forms and letters, spelling out his love for them in a million tiny drops.

incredibly self indulgent headcanon: no matter how human the calamities try to pass off, they still have demon qualities that are pretty cat like. Xie Lian will sometimes find himself unable to move for a calamity or two curled up or slumped over him rumbling away contently. Hua Cheng is unafraid to be openly affectionate and purrs loudly whenever he wants but He Xuan will only do it in private when he feels safe and happy (usually cuddle piles)

Xie Lian tucks his head under He Xuan’s chin, his scent sweet and calm. “G’night, San Lang,” he mumbles.

“Goodnight, gege,” Hua Cheng whispers back, pressing a gentle kiss to their mating bite. His hair brushes over He Xuan’s skin.

When he pulls back, He Xuan locks eyes with him.

“I’ll be right back,” Hua Cheng says, his expression still soft, his voice low. He Xuan imagines that it’s for him, and hates himself for it - no, that gentleness is only for Hua Cheng’s beloved. “Keep him company.”

“Mn,” He Xuan says shortly in response, and Hua Cheng draws the blankets over their shoulders, tucking them in.

His hand flattens against He Xuan’s back. He Xuan’s heart aches.

I’m just a replacement, he reminds himself. Just an extra alpha for when he can’t be here.

“Sleep well, didi,” Hua Cheng says, and tosses his dice, leaving in a swirl of red.

“A-Xuan,” Xie Lian sighs. A purr starts up in his chest.

He Xuan hesitates, but swipes his wrist over Xie Lian’s neck, scenting him as he’s been encouraged to do.

Their three scents mix together - Xie Lian’s flowers, He Xuan’s seawater, Hua Cheng’s smoke. He Xuan’s alpha roars in his chest, satisfied. Mine, it says. He ignores it.

Xie Lian’s purr grows louder at the touch, rumbling through He Xuan’s body.

“Go to sleep,” He Xuan whispers, and gradually Xie Lian drifts off, boneless and vulnerable in He Xuan’s arms.

He Xuan closes his eyes and allows himself to imagine. The two men he loves, holding him in their hearts and not just their bed.

But no. This is good. This is enough.

Wangxian (and to an extent Hualian, but not to this insane degree) is a truly exceptional ship. I mean, I usually ship anything and anywhere, multiple ships for the same characters are more than okay, doesn't matter if canon or not, polyamory is fine as well.

But with Wangxian? Any time I see either of them shipped with anybody else, I HISS LIKE A DEMON CAT. Even if the other ship is just temporary or fakedating, my brain still screams WRONG! ABORT!

The only exceptions to this rule are threesome fics and even then only a few pass the mark. 'Serrated' by InkSplatterM with MXY thrown in the mix (it's a two bodies, three people situation and it stays this way) is one such exception and a really excellent one! I'll also go for WWX with Lan brothers, depending on the mood. But that’s basically it. Same thing with Hualian (HeHualian is fine, anything else, ugh).

I don't know how MXTX does it. I suspect a heavy use of eldritch powers and I am only half joking.

Wangxian really is one of the best pairings I have ever seen. Their progress is so organic, their struggles, their affection, their mistakes and reconciliations, everything flows well and in the end, you don't want to change anything in their relationship.

Like, I love to explore other streams of thought in fanfics and discussions but ultimately, Wangxian is perfect. Not in a way that makes them flawless, but in a way that makes them *real*. Everything about their relationship is organic, it is something you can easily see happening in different scenarios simply because the couple is so compatible.

By now the Heavens have become accustomed to the fact that their competition during the yearly lantern festival is, of course, only a competition for second place and lower. Because no matter how diligent your believers might be there was simply now way they could ever hope to win over a single, long forgotten God of broken and unwanted things...not if said God´s husband happened to be notorious Crimson Rain Sought Flower, with his nearly unlimited power and wealth. Most of them have by now, in the fatalistic way that many of them had developed after centuries of existence accepted this. If you can´t change a thing, learn to live with it and they did so by simply celebrating second place as if it was first and just treating the following spectacle as something arranged for their amusement. The God in question would usually not attend the festivities anyway, preferring his husband´s company over his fellow Gods companionship and so the risk of offending him -and thus, his husband- was slim.

But even the most jaded official had to raise his eyebrows in surprise and slight alarm when instead of only the by now familiar lanters inscribed with “Qiandeng Temple” this year´s spectacle seems to have a second contributor. Then in between the familar shades of the paper lanters there are other ones now too, shaped like fish of all shapes and sizes and equal in number, raising the amount of lanterns for this one single, forgotten god to a staggerin, never before seen height and leaving the God´s whispering, half in awe and half in fear, their eyes still stinging from the combined brightness that had turned the night sky into day. 

They had heard the rumours by now of course, always listening for any whispers concering the feared Ghost Kings that elusive Black Water Sinking Ships wasn´t as elusive these days as he used to be, spending more and more time in his fellow Ghost King´s domain than in his own. They had even heard the rumors that there were festivities being planned in Ghost City, maybe a new temple for the only God being worshipped there or maybe another wedding, none of their sources had known for sure.

But now, with the sky ablaze by thousands of flames as living proof of the love and devotion of not only one, but two Ghost Kings for that one single, insignificant God they can´t help but shiver a little in fear. After all, every good proposal and wedding should have lanterns as well.
