Apptober Day 17

Wohoo the Wallberry clock submodule is finished! The time zone stuff wasn’t actually terrible to write. Probably because I wasn’t doing anything super complicated, but I feel lucky all the same!

A Wild Design Pattern Appears!

If you’ve ever worked with a project using the  MVC (Model View Controller) design pattern you’ll feel right at home writing a MagicMirror2 module. If you haven’t played with MVC before have no worries because the idea is gloriously simple, it just means our code is organized into three neat components:

The Model (AKA Data Model)

The Data Model contains the code that describes the data our module will be using. 

For a more complex module you might have entire data object classes that live in their own files (like the authors of this weather module did). However, my clock module here is so simple that it’s not even worth separating my little time and city data objects from the Controller code. 

The Controller

The Controller is what implements the lion’s share of our app logic. It takes the Data Model objects, does whatever calculations need to be done on them, then hands the results off to the View to be displayed.

In our case the main module file (“WB-clock.js”, also displayed in the first screenshot up above) is our Controller. You can see how it’s responsible for assembling the city and timezone data objects and returning them for our View’s template:

The View

The View is the code is responsible for constructing and displaying what the user sees. 

MM2 includes the Nunjucks templating engine, so my View code is going to take the form of .njk template file. You’ll recognize the syntax immediately if you’ve ever written templates for a Django web server or used Jinja templates, but for the most part it just looks like fancy HTML:

Those {{ variable }} things are where the templating engine will put the data from the Controller, then the whole thing will be displayed to the user like you saw in the first screen shot!

Why Bother With MVC?

MVC is such a popular design pattern (seriously, once you learn it you’ll see it EVERYWHERE in web development) because it helps us write much, MUCH more maintainable code. 

Having our Controller separate from our View means that we can change our app’s logic WITHOUT having to touch the code that’s responsible for displaying it. This becomes especially useful when you’re working with a team of people; now your interface designer can write the CSS and template code at the same time another dev writes the logic code that will provide the data. 

Also, just to give you nightmares, imagine being the person who comes in to re-theme or maintain a project where all of your View and Controller code is mixed together and all of the app’s HTML is constructed through a spaghetti bowl of various javascript if-statements and functions:

Yeah that’s not fun. MVC FTW.

Also I want to say I’m not dunking on the person who had to write the code above (for MM2′s default clock.js), it was written before MM2 had Nunjucks support and you gotta do what you gotta do wildwildwest.mp3.

          Namjoon had planned it all out, the perfect scenario for Seokjin to “randomly” bump into him. Like all good plans, it was full of largely controllable constants. He knew Jimin had reached out to Seokjin about stopping by to test his new merry berry scone, all on the premise of reopening lines of communication between them. He had lied and said Hoseok, who had randomly known Seokjin in college, wanted them all to get together for a holiday party and that he would only do it if Jimin, and Yoongi, bridged the divide between Seokjin and Taehyung. It was a convoluted set up, but oh so easy to believe if Seokjin already acknowledged that Hoseok would of anything for his husband, which he would. Jimin then “suggested” a time that worked within both his and Seokjin’s schedules for this coffee and pastry. And by suggested, Jimin had proposed exactly what Namjoon and Yoongi had decided upon. 8AM was the perfect time to stop by Serendipity. It would be busy enough that Jimin would have to get up more than once to help behind the register, which would leave one single seat open in the little dining area. With only one seat open, Namjoon, who would show up around 8:30, would have no other option but to sit next to Seokjin. Jin, having never really been to Serendipity Sweets, had no reason to suspect the set up because he didn’t know if Namjoon was a regular or not.

          “What if he doesn’t see you? Isn’t it too obvious for Jimin to say, oh look, Namjoon! Seokjin isn’t an idiot,” Taehyung said over a dinner of mustard chicken, green beans and roasted sweet potatoes. Jimin was a decent cook, not nearly as talented at cooking as he was baking, but he managed. In fact, it was something he and Yoongi often did together, discussing their days and sharing their feelings as they prepared a meal they would then share. The tradition, hobby, habit, had begun in their early dating days, when Jimin was experimenting, and Yoongi was desperate to spend any moment with his new crush as possible.

          “He isn’t an idiot, but he won’t know better,” Yoongi said.

          “Jin isn’t expecting me at all. He probably isn’t even thinking about me, which makes seeing me out and about totally unexpected. You know when that happens, you see something you didn’t mean to and it takes you a second to recognize them? That’s what will happen.”

          “So you’re going to subliminally stalk him by showing up in random places?” Taehyung questioned.

          “How is that sustainable?” Jimin asked.

          “It’s going to start small, then escalate,” Yoongi explained, though his answer was demonstrably vague.

          “I think it’s a bad idea. You three broke up for a reason, and he clearly doesn’t want to get the band back together,” Jimin said.

          “But,” Yoongi said, setting his fork down and staring at his husband. “But, Namjoon’s been in love with him for years.”

          “I’m not –

          “You are,” Yoongi interrupted. “What if all Jin needs is to see Joon in a different light, to remember why they worked so well together in the first place?”

          “But you’re fucking with his life.”

          “No, we’re toying with his heart,” Yoongi said.

          “How is that better?”

          “I never said it was,” Yoongi answered.

          “Jin instigated the breakup,” Namjoon said, feeling the tension rise between his friends. “He didn’t give me a reason or an inkling. I was hopelessly in love with him, and I’ve always wondered if he knew and that’s why he ended it. I need to find out, but more than that, I don’t want him to be the one that got away.”

           “I don’t think you could say anything to get me to think this was a good idea,” Jimin admitted.

           “I think that’s okay,” Yoongi said.

           “But what if it works?” Namjoon offered.

           Taehyung took that question and offered his own. “But what if it fails?”

           A knock on the door interrupted the debate churning between spouses. Taehyung, knowing exactly who it was, sprang into action and opened the door for his partner.

           “Baby,” Hoseok said upon seeing Taehyung. He pulled him into a tight embrace before kissing his cheek. Taehyung turned swiftly, lips finding Hoseok’s in a chaste kiss.

           “Honey,” Taehyung said, grin spreading across his cheeks. “I missed you.”

           “Since this morning?”

           “Yes, since the second you left. I’ve been missing you all day.”

           “I missed you too,” Hoseok blushed in response.

           “Come, there’s still food.”

           “How was closing?” Jimin asked up on seeing his business partner.

           “Good, we made two hundred more than last Sunday,” Hoseok answered.

           “What changed?” Taehyung asked.

           “We put out a new pastry.” Jimin answered. “And our ad in the local paper went live, good to know we have a solid return on our investment.”

           “What are you all so tense about?” Hoseok asked, and waited patiently for the group to answer.

           “They want Seokjin to fall in love with Namjoon.”

Here’s a little rant ig abt the ending that I wrote at 3 am

‪I like the part where we get to see Koda attend UA, and Eri a normal school carrying an instrument. I especially liked that kodas perception of hero’s changed so much he’s training to become one!! I wonder who changed his mind.. ‬anyways! I also don’t get why people say that they were “scammed” or “tricked” because deku didn’t become no.1 or anyone from the wonder trio (is that what they’re even called? I’m just guessing) whilst it would be nice if deku or anyone from class 1A DID become number 1 that’s not what the story is entirely about. It’s about how izuku became the worlds GREATEST hero and NOT the number ONE hero. And how his body moved before he could think in a dangerous where not even the pros or AM moved (Ik AM was at his limit, dk about the pros tho) Despite the fact that AM told him he could not become a hero without a quirk only a while ago. Because regardless of being quirkless midoriya had the heart and compassion of a true hero. Which was even acknowledged by stain during/after their fight. I feel like another part of the story was that along his journey Midoriya inspired SO many people. Even before he went to UA! He inspired Kirishima who heard the story about the boy who rushed out to save a hostage while the pros were waiting. Even AM (when he saw how midoriya rushed out to save bakugo which reminded him of himself? Or someone else), Todoroki who refused to use his fire, Rody, Katsuma(?), Uraraka who at the beginning just wanted to help her parents financially, and many more were inspired by him. Which I’ll come back to later, but in chapter 429: midoriya says that uraraka is his hero. As he is always getting saved by her and that she’s always prioritized others over herself. Which is why he doesn’t want to depend on her strength forever, and tells her that holding someone’s hand can put your heart at ease. Which is why I think when he says that “if we we keep reaching out our hands even when it’s none of our business, then I’m sure that..” hits extra. Because he’s already done that on multiple occasions!! He’s reached out to Todoroki who refused to use his fire, because of his father, eri who also refused because she didn’t want to be the cause of others pain. And to Tenko shimura during their last battle, which was the result of him losing OFA. All of these people he’s reached out not with just words, but also through his actions even if they didn’t want his help, because he cared.

Which also reminds me of that parallel(can I even call it that) between Tenko/Shigaraki, and that new character introduced in chap 429. Because he was also treated badly by his family, and when he escaped he started roaming the streets. Like who???? TENKO. And who does he get approached by??? THE SAME GRANDMA WHO LEFT TENKO. But this time she actually reaches out to him, instead of leaving him like she did with tenko all those years ago. And mentions how she’s always wondered if that kid (tenko) was saved by a hero after she left him. She also mentions how on that day izuku showed them something, and that instead of just rooting on him they felt the need to do something themselves. WHICH IS WHY SHE REACHED OUT TO HIM THIS TIME!!!!!

Because to Izuku if caring about others is the first step to becoming a hero, then on that day they were ALL the greatest heroes. Everyone cared about Someone during that battle, Uraraka cared about Toga, Midoriya cared about Tenko, Shoto cared about Touya etc. I chose these as an example, because regardless of their status as villain or hero they still reached out to them. (Shoto might be a bad example since touya is his brother, but I feel like there’s a difference between touya and dabi which is why I used them) Both midoriya and Uraraka wished that they had met them when they were younger, so things could’ve turned out differently? (I think shoto did to, but it’s 3 am so Idrk)

I also don’t really get the hate around the fact that izuku became a teacher. Yes it would’ve been nice if he still had OFA, but he’s STILL pro hero. Or at least becomes one at the end. I’ve also seen a few “this is the story of how I piqued in high school”, which are lwk a bit funny I’ll admit. BUT STILL PISS ME OFF. Because if UA is soo hard to get into surely the teachers are good too? WHICH THEY ARE. most if not all of them are pro heroes, and I’m pretty sure that all of them were active heroes on top of that. And izuku DID graduate from UA, so doesn’t that technically make him a pro hero, but not an active one???? Anyways, him becoming a teacher is quite cool if you ask me! He’s smart and his understanding and analysis on quirks is soo helpful for students that need help??? And as he said so himself, now that his dream has come true he wants to give people dreams. YOU CANNOT TELL ME THAT DOESNT SOUND COOL ASF.

Ik the mha ending was a while ago, but I just can’t understand the hate it got?? Yeah the ending was a bit rushed and I wish we could’ve gotten more insight on Class 1-A as third years amongst other things. But it also seems a bit fitting too? Idk if that’s just me??
