India gained freedom in 1947 but a small part of India enjoyed a brief period of official freedom from their British colonial masters. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands were the first region to gain freedom and hoist the Indian National Flag and it all happened on this day, 76 years ago. On 30th October 1943, the Japanese handed over the islands to Subhas Chandra Bose and the INA and Bose hoisted the National Flag in Port Blair. Today it is known as flag point with the Indian national flag flying high and signage at the sea showing 1943, 1st flag hoisting along with with 'Jai hind' written slabs in every Indian language. #flagpoint #portblair #portblairflagpoint #1stIndianflaghoisting #andamannicobarislands #andamanislands #freedom #indianfreedommovement #indianindependence #ina #subhaschandrabose #japanese #worldwar2 #amazingandaman #andamanhistory #andamanheritage #indianhistory #indianheritage #heritageblogger #heritageblog #travelgram #travelblog #travelbloggers #travelblogger #travelbloggerslife #indiantravelbloggers #indiantravellers #incredibleindia #natgeoyourshot #yourshotphotography (at Flag South Point Port Blair) https://www.instagram.com/p/B6s0Pe8gnYa/?igshid=1tvzf81ue01gu

Cellular Jail an untamed history that still reeks for freedom. A vast structure of a 7 winged wheel with a central tower axis designed in such a way that each wing faced the back of other. Thus making it impossible for the prisoners to contact each other. Hard labour, torture, plus isolation of dungeon like cell with little food and no toilet and health allowances added too much mental pressure on the already processed idea of Kalapani. Built on Jeremy Bentham's idea of the Panopticon the structure of this prison is ideal for vigilance without much a trouble. You just need to have a guard at the tower from where all the 7 wings are accessible and visible. Additionally, they had 3 more guards on each of the 3 floors of every wing..this 21 guards patrolled the place which changed every hour. The locks were deep and buried under a wall cabinet. So, there was no scope of direct escape. Prisoners tried to device bombings and other plans in order to escape when they were in the courtyard. It took 10 years to complete this structure. It started on 1896 and ended on 1906. Ironically, the penal settlement in Andamans started much earlier and the prisoners from the viper and Ross Island jail was used to build this structure. Of the 7 radiated wings that could hold 700 prisoners, only 3 remains today. 2 were destroyed by the Japanese in 1942 and the rest 2 were demolished by the Indian government to make a hospital. #cellularjail #cellularjailhistory #andamannicobarislands #andamanislands #andamanhistory #andamanheritage #indianhistory #indianheritage #heritageblogger #heritagebuilding #travelgram #travelblog #travelbloggerslife #travelblogger #kalapani #kalapanijail #yourshotcommunity #yourshotphotography #andamankalapani @lonelyplanetmagazineindia @yourshot_india @natgeoyourshot @yourshot.community @natgeoindia @natgeotravel @incredibleindia (at Cellular Jail) https://www.instagram.com/p/B6qeholg_rV/?igshid=1a25y190mixpv

Many of us who travel to this part of the land and visit the Cellular Jail, remains oblivious to the treachery of this place. Nearly 1000 people visit this place in day almost close to the number of prisoners it once housed. We take selfies, pose with the opulent structure but forget how much still is unknown about the place. It was a prison city in its own right which was governed by the cruel David Barry and Mirza Khan. When the first gates open for the political prisoners in 1906 very few knew it was lost tunnel. Records were far less and whatever survives is a tight lipped British classified documents. Many of the prisoners hasn't been found and identified till date including that of the Last Maharaja of Khurda, Sri Gajapati Raja Ramchandra Deva 3 of Puri. His name isn't there in the record although it has been believed he died of torture and hard labour shortly after he was deported here. The idea of this prison is based on the Hindu belief of Kalapani, which meant the Hindus lost their caste and soul if they crossed the sea. This led to more torture for the Hindus than others. In fact, Muslim convicts became warders and used against the Hindus. This totally changed the perception Savarkar and he became a Hindu hardcore fanatic then. The jail was closed down and reopened atleast 4 times to tame the political prisoners. There are accounts that state the cruel Jailor David Barry was thrown out of the roof by a convict which paralysed him. Ultimately he left for Calcutta and died there within 8 months of arrival. Other accounts say Barry died at sea. Here, I am still looking the burial site of Barry in Calcutta, if at all he died here. P.S. The 1996 Malayalam film Kalapani chronicles this story well. Do watch it. #cellularjail #prisoncity #prison #penalcolony #andamanjail #davidbarry #andamanpenalcolony #britishpenalcolony #savarkar #kalapani #kalapanijail #history #heritage #travelgram #travelblog #travelblogger #heritageblogger #bloggerheritage #indianhistory #indianheritage #andamantraveling #andamantourism #yourshotphotography #yourshotcommunity @lonelyplanetmagazineindia @lonelyplanet @natgeotravellerindia @natgeotravel @yourstory_com @yourshot_india (at Cellular Jail) https://www.instagram.com/p/B6oFfxtg2pW/?igshid=8c7xmj5kbgrr

This glistening blue water that grows on us like life life and romance often saw no light at the end of the tunnel for many. Andamans that we see today was destroyed long ago, long before we were born. Not just the indigenous communities but the mass execution of political freedom in the name of Kalapani. While many died of torture and hanging very few records highlight the extend of medical torture inflicted by British army doctors. If the Nazis doctors in Hitler's reign are executed for their experiments then the army doctors of cellular Jail were equally responsible for killing numerous prisoners with their catheter feeding experiments. A Guardian report titled "survivors of our hell" published back in 2001 chronicles the whole idea of Kalapani and it's psychological advantage. Having sought Australia as refuge they finally settled in Andamans as such a penal island transportation was banned in Australia in 1850. So, after the sepoy mutiny this followed, thousands even met the journey and died at sea, which lead to further allotment of people Burma and other regions. India was fighting freedom but no one was fighting for this god forsaken land. Same is going today. The land is riffed of many basic things including higher education. There's no masters degree imparting courses here. Here's how the British came to use Kalapani, " The British military doctors had admired the penal settlement unveiled by the French six years earlier on a rocky islet off Guyana. But their Devil's Island would be far more ambitious. The doctors consulted Hindu texts and decided to create a psychological gulag based around the Sanskrit term kalapani. It literally meant "black water", but kalapani was also a myth, an ancient Indian story that told how the faithful were parted from their souls by crossing the sea. The doctors knew that kalapani would be feared across the Empire as a godless place, a journey that would strip the transported of their caste, community and creed." #andamanislands #trauma #amazingandaman #kalapani #kalapanijail #cellularjail #armydoctors #britisharmydoctors #medicalcruelty #medicalkilling #cruelhistory #heritage #history #heritageblogger (at Port Blair) https://www.instagram.com/p/B6IaQYcAPeT/?igshid=1rr5ylut0j1th

The beautiful tipu sultan mosque in ekbalpur, Khidirpore built by Tipu's son's daughter. A stark change from mosque built by men. There are a no. of tipu sultan's mosques in Calcutta which are structurally similar mirror images but subtly different. Strange how an exiled king and his descendants have mapped this country - from the far south to the east. The Mysore king born in Devanahalli fort area, near Bangalore has its descendants flowing to this part of the land. Much like the Bengalis of today who are migrating to his land in search of better employability. Migration and necessity never seem to end. @kynbengal @breakfreetrails #tipusultan #tipusultanmosque #mosquesofworld #mosque #masjid #tipusultandescendants #descendants #calcuttaheritage #calcuttahistory #calcuttasyndrome #kynbengal #neighbourhoodwalk #neighbours #neighbourhood #neighbourhoodwalks #travelgram #travelmemory #travelblog #travelblogger #heritageblogger #architecture #indianarchitecture #breakfreetrails #khidirpore #migration #harmony #coexistence #peace #religious #religiousharmony (at Khidirepore) https://www.instagram.com/p/B5pyrGVASBm/?igshid=d1ndxq2ef4g4
