John is not a good person. He's a nice guy because it's easier to be nice and not deal with any hate people could have than to say what he thinks and have to deal with everything all the time.

Deal with the karens and their comments about why he's not smiling, and deal with his father being sad that his son is unhappy. Dealing with his friends wondering where he left.

Dealing with his own feelings and emotions and hate because smiling gives you serotonin and serotonin helps you not to think about everything that is wrong.

In truth, he hates himself and everyone. Even his friends sometimes. He despises them. For moving on so easily. For doing so good. For having a life without him.

He feels left out and alone.

Jade has her plants and seems like she's enjoying life.

Rose has her wife and a job she loves taking care of the grubs.

And Dave has Karkat and makes John feel like a third wheel everytime he sees them. Like he shouldn't be there. Like he's bothering them.

It makes him mad, not being able to connect. And how could he blame his friends? It's not their fault.

But how could he blame himself? He hasn't done anything wrong.

He's jealous of them for being so happy and starts wondering if maybe there's something wrong with him? Why can't he be happy like them?

Then one day he decides to give Dave another shot and leaves his house to hang out with him again but he's not alone.

Not only is Karkat with him because Karkat is always with him, but Dirk is there too. And he doesn't feel like a third wheel anymore.

And they hang out and watch movies together and John is having a great time. Not because he's hanging out with his best friend, but because Dirk is there, and he's new and fun, and they both have the same reactions to Davekat pda, and john laughs for the first time in forever.

And they both leave at the same time and John asks Dirk if he wants to keep hanging out and Dirk shrugs but he's panicking internally.

So they end up talking about the day they just had and how fun it was compared to when they usually hang out with the knights.

And John lets his hate out and he's still having a great time because he gets to complain and Dirk listens because he understands.

He understands how intimidating Dave can seem. Because Dave's an amazing guy, he's good and heroic, and everything else they aren't.

So John realizes it was jealousy this whole time and Dirk realizes he's not alone.
