The universe is vast and mysterious. This small dot that we live in is insignificant compared to endless space. We, who live in it, are mere cosmic dust. Such insignificant tiny beings like us manage to find each other amidst countless specks of dust. How great of a miracle is that? So perhaps.... we being cosmic dust… have nothing else to do but love.

Two tiny gay boys who need to confess so badly but instead are just gonna lie next to each without saying anything because SeungWon is willing to tell everyone and anyone besides HeeSu and HeeSu is still distinctly scared of his own queerness and they are so young and so high school and I just want to save them from themselves.

Now, idk how but here goes a few things that were dragged out of me, as i witness the split opinions on heesu in class 2. let me start out by saying: i'm a fan of the show :) and i know next to nothing about the manhwa. just so it's clear from the get go.
i haven't watched kdramas in a long while, so i suppose i'd been in the bl bubble exclusively for that entire time. i dont prefer kdramas, or uh straight romances very much personally. hence while watching the first couple eps of heesu, i had pretty much the same reaction. annoyance, disappointment, what more, my interest dropped steadily for a bit until i decided i would drop the show entirely if it dint focus more on the queer storyline, essentially our mc's plot more, in the following episodes. I got on tumblr like i usually do whenever i'm watching one of my bls, and boom, instantly more perspective unlocked. 'thematic foil' the phrase that stuck with me the most. a set of characters in a story getting focus and being followed along their journey apart from the mc, to serve as a foil that demonstrates what exactly the mc could be having, or how it usually goes for the majority of people, a majority our mc clearly isn't a part of. Several characters going about crushes in their own ways, what i enjoyed the most is how the show doesn't subtly pin any of them as 'right' or 'wrong', something i was worried they'd do. Heesu is always supportive of his sisters, no matter what errand he's in the middle of running, he always makes sure they're fine first before heading out. and most importantly, the best advice received by one of the sisters, was in fact not given by the mc but by another sister itself, heejeong to heejae. which i thought was really cool.
Admittedly, i wasn't a fan of the sisters in the beginning, but i guess that's just more on my own cynicism towards dating trends in general. as time passed though, they grew on me significantly. i mean, there's a charming sort of integrity to each sister's ways you can't ignore. another thing: the complaints about no kissing. i hardly ever find this argument to be nuanced, probably the most irritating reason people put out to dismiss an entire show as 'bad'. we see the formation of 2 straight high school couples, along with the boys, now had they been shown kissing or even toeing the lines of any other kind of physical intimacy other than holding hands or hugging, i would've extended that expectation to heesu and seungwon. but here, these kids just are not doing that yet. is that such a hard pill to swallow? bruh, it doesn't become straight washing cause the gay couple dint kiss or cause the straight couple got equal (note: equal) screen time. heesu is not a bl, sure. But it IS a queer kdrama. with a QUEER mc and his QUEER pining classmate (soon to be boyfriend) who has TWO moms. the third thing isn't focused on a lot but man i loved that scene in the last episode where seungwon's mom asks how much she should disclose at the meeting. and his reply, 'if you start lying, i'll have to continue it'.
Now. the last scene, which the non-fans seem to hate the most. but in fact the scene i loved the most. heesu looks back at chanyoung and jiyu walking close behind them, watches cy put his arm around jy with something like yearning flickering in his eye, he turns around, blinks it away and goes back to smiling. seungwon notices, puts his arm around heesu and when heesu kinda hesitates, asks him not to worry (about getting outed basically) cause people are just gonna assume they're close friends or some shit. like all throughout history, this has been used to erase queer people and their relationships. why not use it to your own advantage now? my favorite thing about his dailogue tho, is that it's meant to be reassuring. Seungwon is reassuring Heesu that he's proud about their relationship and wouldn't mind making it public. that he's fine with people finding out. how great is that to hear, when you've been shouldering all this turmoil alone for years, like how Heesu has been doing? Wonderful scene. episode 8,9 and 10 were my favorites and i would totally recommend this show to anyone looking for a wholesome little QUEER teen kdrama experience.
#the more detailed and heartfelt meta on this show have been wonderful to read#made me want to give my own 2 paisa#heesu in class 2#hic2#and i love heesu's actor#fabulous job on his part no notes#jiyu's character weaves everyone and their struggles so beautifully#chanyoungs tennis plotline was very satisfying to watch too#i was kinda meh on it until the scene where he stood up to his dad#got sold then#thingamabob#aa mine

Favorite Things: Heesu In Class 2
This queer coming of age series started so cute and then it made us live in our feels. The more we thought about this series, the overall story it was telling, the messages and points it was making, the more we respected the choices it made. Even the other characters, story arcs and relationships were part of the bigger theme. This story was too real and too honest and has lead to some of our favorite posts.
Find our favorite posts below (spoilers ahead):
❤️ For the love of Heesu: a collection of posts by different people about the themes and messages that make this series great! We think all of them are worth the read and people made so many great observations.
🧡 @nabi-unveiled shared their very personal experience with this series and it beautifully illustrates how stories like this can have depth and value to the people that connect to them. We join Nabi in their final thought on the series:
And if Heesu in Class 2 makes even one queer kid have hope that they'll be accepted or gives them the courage to step into the light in a world that's not a BL bubble, then that's a win in my book too.
💛 We enjoyed this post by @soypim about Heesu's sisters and what their stories added to the series.
💚 After watching episode 9, @bengiyo posted about how the plotlines come together to tell a bigger story.
💙 @twig-tea posted their thoughts after watching episode 7 and what they were loving about the series at that point:
💜 Love the way @lurkingshan breaks down the elements of this series in this great post:
❤️ This interesting post by @wanderlust-in-my-soul explores how one sided crushes were experienced by different characters in the series and their thoughts on the story being told.
🧡 Still can not believe we got this called out not once, but TWICE, in this series. Thanks for the GIFS @kdramaxoxo
💛 Dori had too many feels and needed to rant about the ending scene. Ending with a scene that shows the inequality experienced by a queer couple and those with het privilege took guts and we respect the choice.
💚 In the end, this series gave us a lot of hope because stories like these change hearts. And if it can help even one queer youth feel less alone, or one person react with more openness, empathy and understanding, it would be enough.
💙 GMD head cannon fun: what should have happened when Heesu came out to his sister
💜 Grateful for 😍 GIFS by @hughungrybear 1, 2, 3, 4 +
❤️ @taeminie posted GIFS of the final scene. As said in a previous post, we have a love/hate relationship with the arguably perfect, yet too real ending. But we respect the message and if the boys are happy, we will be happy for them.
🧡 @jimmysea shared GIFS of this great scene
💛 We will end with this great post by @lurkingshan about the history of queer representation in Korean dramas. Not specifically about Heesu In Class 2, but it ends with discussing where this series fits and how positive this kind of representation is.
#this show gave us a lot of feels#and some of the best posts we have ever read#too honest and too real to feel 100% happy#we respect the story#someday we will rewatch it#😍 gifs#heesu in class 2#hic2#heesu in class 2 the series#heesu x seungwon#kdrama#korean bl#gmd post#gmd favorite things

Re-reading Heesu in Class 2 and, aside from falling in love with it all over again, I'm increasingly confused about what the show could be about if they really have decided to bromance-ify it rather than keep it as BL.
Like.... (Spoilers under the cut)
Yes it's a coming of age story but it's massively informed by the fact that Heesu is gay and doesn't live in the BL bubble (albeit in a kinder version of reality).
Heesu doesn't feel like he can confess his feelings to Chanyoung not because he was worried about losing his friend (i.e. the usual coming of age romance storyline) but because he didn't even think it was an option for "someone like [him]".
Chanyoung and Heesu's friendship is complicated because Changyoung is aware of Heesu's feelings but can't work out how to help him move on from them without accidentally making Heesu think he's rejecting who he is or forcing him to come out. The thing that makes Chanyoung such a great friend is that, once he finds a solution, be becomes the most enthusiastic match maker ever.
Remove all that (and that's just scratching the surface) and what do you get? Why even bother adapting it?
Jiyu, Heesu's sisters, Seungwon's mothers... They're there to show the value of having supportive and loving peers and elders and, in Seungwon's mothers' case, show how valuable and powerful it is to have role models as a queer youth....
#I'm holding out hope#In fact I have hope because the teaser DID contain scenes that would be weird to keep of it wasn't going to be BL#but the re-read got me thinking#because to bromance-ify HIC2 would be some real piss on the poor reading comp from the adapters#and even if it was because of sponsor/funding enforced censorship it'd still be such a weird choice?#like agreeing to censor Heartstopper or Love in the Big City#technically possible but ultimately pretty much pointless#heesu in class 2

Heesu in Class 2 is the Show of the Spring for Me
I’m so relieved to have a show to look forward to again. I was in such despair after Gelboys ended that I haven’t been able to even write my BL Blurb about it; I just haven’t wanted to talk about how many other shows I’ve dropped or been uninterested in starting. However, Heesu in Class 2 has quickly taken over my top slot, and it’s given me a lot of ideas about the ways BL can explore queerness without saying “I am a homosexual,” while also exploring first romance.
It's Easy to Follow
The main source of my initial excitement about this show stems from how clear its narrative goals are from the jump. We have Hee Su, who’s known for giving lots of romantic advice without having much experience, and who is also known for being in the shadow of his popular friend Chan Young. Chan Young is often confessed to by girls, but they often grow tired of his aloof nature and break up. Hee Su is holding a secret crush on Chan Young, and worries he’ll miss his chance.
Meanwhile, the class president, Seung Won, is struggling to confess his own crush to Hee Su; Chan Young is developing a crush on Ji Yu after having a nice interaction in their cram school; and Ji Yu is also developing a crush on Chan Young. Hee Su sees this mutual crush forming, misunderstands Seung Won’s behavior, and decides that the best way for him to keep Chan Young available to him is to meddle in Seung Won’s affairs and pair him with Ji Yu.
Beyond that, Hee Su and Chan Young have another friend in Ho Sik who’s pursuing a relationship with one girl in the knitting club, while another girl leaves his secret admirer gifts. Hee Su also has three older sisters, who seem to be his primary caregivers (it doesn’t seem like their parents are in the picture). His dynamic with Ho Sik feels familiar, and Ahn Ji Ho plays off all three sister-playing actresses with surprising ease. Each sister feels distinct, and the rapport between all of them feels lived-in.
What stands out so far is that each dynamic in this show has been accessible and identifiable immediately. Each interaction in this show feels intentional and contributes to the ongoing development of the narrative or the characters.
Queer Angst Without Identity Declarations
One of the ongoing struggles I’ve had for years with BL is how alien it can feel for people who aren’t naturally drawn to romance stories, especially for many of my queer friends and colleagues. BL feels so alien to them, and many of my people have complained that BL characters don’t feel real to them. Like Our Dating Sim (ODS), Heesu in Class 2 (HIC2) is the kind of BL I enjoy because there aren’t many great heterosexual explanations for what’s happening in this show. In ODS, Lee Wan’s behavior regarding Shin Ki Tae only makes sense if he lives in a world with recognizable homophobia, and I’m feeling a similar pull in HIC2. ODS never had to say the words gay, and I don’t think HIC2 needs to right now.
Hee Su could choose to hide his feelings from Chan Young for valid platonic reasons, but the inherent fear for closeted folks is the rejection of your entire being when your friend can’t reciprocate your feelings. When heterosexuals reject each other, it isn’t inherently laced with the rejection of queerness itself. More than just navigate awkward friendship boundaries when a romance isn’t possible, queer people must navigate whether they can even be friends with a straight person anymore.
Hee Su could have treated the lesbian classmate like her crush on a girl was unremarkable. Instead, he brought up her situation with his sisters in a way that felt a lot like testing the waters on whether his sisters could accept a similar truth from him. His sisters’ serious regard for the issue, and Hee Jin’s response that the confirmation that the crush could like another girl insinuated that the pining lesbian still had a chance, further confirms that this is not a world where everyone is bisexual by default without anyone having to look directly into the camera to declare themselves gay.
Hee Su panicked when Chan Young’s latest suitor (though she might have a crush on Hee Su) asked him if he liked Chan Young. He’s also currently receiving threatening messages from an anonymous sender about what they presume to know about him. I absolutely loved episode 4 ending without resolving that, or confirming the identity of the sender, so the audience can experience a miniscule fraction of what being closeted feels like.
Then there’s Seung Won. Beyond his own crush on Hee Su and admiration for their home life, he had the opportunity to hide a truth about himself from Ji Yu when she brought up how he looks at Hee Su. I like that their friendship is one that’s strong enough that she can laugh at the absurd situation he’s in without him feeling embarrassed about his truth.
All of this gives us a useful framework to use hets.
The Hets
What we gain for placing this story outside of the BL Bubble is the ability to reckon with the presumptions and consequences of expected queer responses to angst. I love that Hee Su has a crush on his straight friend as Seung Won has a crush on Hee Su. In any sort of romantic story, the audience generally sides with the protagonist, and tends to side with their baseline perspective on things.
Hee Su has a nonproductive crush on his best friend. I might grow frustrated with the unspoken impasse in this story if I didn’t have Seung Won’s crush, or the budding romance between Chan Young and Ji Yu as additional complications in this story. Chan Young not noticing what’s going on with Hee Su would prove frustrating if Hee Su wasn’t also actively working against his best friend’s goals.
Moreover, it’s hard to support the inherent validity of Hee Su’s feelings, with the additional demand that Chan Young must pick up on them (or even reciprocate them) without disrespecting Seung Won’s feelings as well. This love rhombus works because Hee Su is not the only sympathetic character in this situation. If Chan Young must respond and reciprocate Hee Su’s gay feelings as our protagonist, where does that leave Seung Won? We must instead focus on what the characters do in pursuit of their goals and the resulting consequences.
Chan Young clearly loves Hee Su, and listens to him closely; but the boy is straight, and he won’t likely reciprocate Hee Su’s feelings. He’s not teasing Hee Su just because they have a physically affectionate friendship, which he also seems to have with Ho Sik. Hee Su himself noted that Chan Young’s response to Ji Yu is new and unlike anything he’s ever seen from him.
As for Ji Yu, I love that she’s been given a full personality. She’s another character being misunderstood by her peers as a snotty rich girl, when we’re shown that she’s a poor girl working a part time job on top of cram school while building a music career. This girl is busy! We see her pick up on Chan Young’s interest, and she responded in kind. That the feelings between them are so easy for them to feel and express serves as a frank comparison to Hee Su’s gay angst (though Hee Su and Seung Won could learn from the Episode 1 Lesbian and confess!)
Ji Yu also didn’t recoil at the possibility that her longtime friend Seung Won might have a crush on her. She was surprised, and respected Seung Won’s avoidance about it for a while before trying to approach him properly about it. Her eventually laughing at him over his situation with Hee Su works for me because she treated him seriously.
I also can’t hate Chan Young for being straight. He clearly values his friends, and he’s got an active sports storyline for me to follow! He’s clearly going to hurt himself over his newfound determination to succeed in tennis now that he’s motivated by his crush on Ji Yu.
In this show, I genuinely like the control Chan Young and Ji Yu offer, along with Ho Sik and Hee Su’s sisters, as a baseline for what heterosexuality looks like in this show’s world.
Wrapping Up
Honestly, I’m having so much fun with this show. It’s been so refreshing to have a show to look forward to on Fridays and Saturdays with the current drought I’m in. Ahn Ji Ho is so great at the physicality of his character, and he’s got excellent control over his facial expressions (I was cackling at his emoji-esque glare at Seung Won). He has consistent scene chemistry with every performer in this show. More than that, it’s just really nice to watch a show that told us exactly what it was about in the first episode before delivering on that experience every single episode. This show is really good, and it’s so rare that I’ve been able to say that lately.

Finally finished my binge/rewatch of HiC2
And ya
This show was really slick with how they did things. The fact that Heesu hid in the dark everytime he had to face his feelings. Will be hard to gif those scenes
Like I mentioned in the last post, Ji Yu and Chan Young were cute, they had so many scenes together and we watched their entire relationship grow together and them individually!
Heesu and Seung Won status basically only changed in the last episode. They don’t have many scenes together in a romantic setting. They were main characters but not so much main leads. But we were warned

And then Heesu, as selfish as he was, was called selfish for ambushing CY about how he felt. You kept prying! You have your boundaries with tennis and Heesu but you have no problem talking about it with Ji Yu. Then you make a whole stink in front of the school about how Heesu doesn’t think you’re important. Then he shows you how important you are and then you run away.
I noticed a few extras in the background that were cute

Also noticed that So Hee is in the background when Heesu finds his first carrot juice and she looks back

It’s funny how after that carrot juice is everywhere even though no one but Heesu likes to them

Anyways, the way Heesu and Chan Young separated throughout the show only for Chan Young to basically forget about Heesu and grow while Heesu was shown trying to figure out ways to get between Ji Yu and Chan Young was upsetting.
Heesu and Seung Won were basically stuck for episodes. Neither having the courage because obviously it’s harder for the gays but Seung Won either bailed on saying anything or Heesu was too oblivious 🙄
We got hand holding in the last episode and that even eludes to them not being comfortable. And that Seung Won is replacing Chan Young And the notion that both Heesu and Seung Won grew up in women only households feels like it’s telling something
So yeah I did enjoy the show. If I had to wait weekly I’d definitely would’ve been even more upset. Maybe I should read the manga

This poor, precious boy. He confessed to SeungWon and got nothing. And now SeungWon is trying to confess to him but it feels like being mocked. It really has to, especially after the whole debacle of ChanYoung basically demanding he apologize for confessing.
Honestly, my boy, you have the worst way of showing it. Just... SeungWon, you really gotta get better at this.
At least he apologized, I guess. Better than nothing. And finally confessed. And poor HeeSu suffered for nothing because SeungWon really should have done better at the first confession. I've never seen a first confession go so badly and pointlessly.
Aaaannddd no kiss, of course not.

At A Glance:
Heesu In Class 2
South Korea - coming of age/romance
Staring: Ahn Ji-ho & Lee Sang-jun

Heesu is an 18 year old high school student better at giving out dating advice than following it. Having never dated, Heesu has hidden a secret crush on his best friend Chan Yeong for over 10 years. But there is a lot more at risk when admitting your crush means coming out. And just when Heesu has gathered up the courage, Chan Yeong's crush for Ji Yu puts his plan on hold. So Heesu teams up with Seung Won in hopes Seung Won can win over Ji Yu and remove his love rival.
This is a coming of age story about a queer character growing up in a conservative environment. This series gave us a lot to digest. It explores the difficulty and fear in letting others see our true selves. It shows us the weight and cost of secrets and how they can trap us. But it also shows us that honesty can be hard and painful. It beautifully and uncomfortably contrasts queer vs het experiences throughout the story and shines a light on het privilege. It's full of young, flawed, human characters that make mistakes and then grow from them. All of the characters and their plots serve to tell a bigger, more meaningful story. This story often felt too honest and too real, but we respect it for the choices they made and the messages it delivers. Ultimately, we thought it was a really well done series with positive queer representation and a final message that love is a precious gift and should be celebrated.
Ending: We consider it perfect for the point it was driving home, but it was too honest to be 100% happy.
Tears: This one was hard to rate and our rating may not be yours because it's complicated and heavily fueled by what this series brings up for individuals. This is always a subjective rating, but it was impossible for us to separate out the personal from this series. Just be prepared to feel a lot of emotions. Some viewers shed a lot of tears over moments in this series, our sadness gravitated much more towards anger and frustration. It was easy to get lost in the pain of a scene and lose sight of what it was adding to the narrative. We spent a lot of time processing some of these scenes. Not nearly as heavy as a lot of series depicting this topic, but too honest and real to be light.
Main Couple: Queer
Side Couple: The side couple is het, with lots of het in the background. But there is other representation of queer love in this series.
Romance Scenes: Emotional only. Innocent and new with only sweet and hard earned hand holding. In our opinion, appropriate to the story.
Flavor: water. They keep you alive, but no dessert here.
Heads up: queer experiences including closeted existence, threat of being forcibly outed, conservative/het normative environment, coming out. Also toxic family (side character).
