Hey, i figured out how to make transparent leather. Sort of a collaboration between the caveman and mad scientist aspects of my personality. It’s softer and more supple than my usual bark tanned deer leather, and transparent enough to read print through. Its texture is waxy, a little bit stretchy, and fairly pliable (but not as soft as a good braintanned buckskin). . . . I took the deer hide, soaked it in hardwood ash lye, and srcaped both sides of it, then (instead of soaking it in an oak bark decocotion like i would normally do) soaked it in an extract of celery seed and Heuchera. Then i stretched it to dry, then finished it with an emulsion of aloe and tallow. . . . As yet i have no particular idea what the application of this material is. It can be dyed with an alcohol-based pigment (like the dot above my finger in the picture), so there is the possibility for it in different colors too. . . . #hidetanning #transparentleather #deerskin #primitiveskills https://www.instagram.com/p/B5_Q_mylv5s/?igshid=isduf67wlouo

Before and after. From rough, stiff, crunchy-cardboard hide I'd long thought unsalvageable, to a suede finer than paper and as soft as mycelium. This batch of alum- and bark-tanned rabbit hides sat barely-broken in the bottom of a moving box for five years, and now they're so soft and smooth, you'd never know it. Thanks to @kyfurneaux for giving me a little inspiration-push to get back on the horse, as it were. Let's see what these skins become next. . . . . . . . . . . . . posted on Instagram - http://bit.ly/2JV6Q9q

Ethically skinned raccoon pelt! (Roadkill is common around here, so we use their hides & feed them to the kitties!) I will be posting a video later on How-to string up your own hides. Rabbit fur and hide is extremely delicate. I loved the brown hides I got but I messed up on this one when stretching the hide and pulled too hard which ripped the hide almost in half. An unfortunate mistake but it's still salvageable! #rabbithide #rabbitskin #rabbitfur #hidestretching #mistakes #lessonlearned #goofed #unfortunate #torn #hidetanning #hides #furhides #ripped #leatherwork #leatherworker #leather https://www.instagram.com/p/BvqHvxFlRa6/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=9tdqvop976s1

So grateful for a portrait of this beautiful moment. It’s a reminder that #decolonization #indigenize #unsettle is about little moments, opportunities, love and family as it is about theories and protests. Beginning processing on this beautiful chocolate dwarf rabbit. Its pelt is spoken for, but the feet & head will make their way to my etsy shop eventually. A natural farm death, I learned from its original keeper that the carcasses are donated to a mastiff rescue group :3

Week three of my rabbit hide tanning. 2 weeks of picking done and then gave them a bath and wash. Now it's the final stretch! Coming out really nice, been going out and daily stretching them as they dry. #tanning #hidetanning #rabbithide #rabbitskin #rabbitfur #leatherworker #leatherwork #rabbits #leather #selftaught #hideproject #weekthree https://www.instagram.com/p/BvfgfLblJoj/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=wx8psvnarbzj

//// H I D E S M O K E //// A kind of reincarnation. A meditation on death. A relationship with the elements. Smoke, brains, punk. Stretch, pull, abrade. Blue, brown, a dark tone. The smell of the earth. The smell of decay. Cut, scrape, squeeze, sew, hang, wrap. Arms work, mind wanders. Deer spirit rests with engaged body. All else falls away. This work: movement. Process The process of reincarnation.

This is a photo of Lucy-Anne Yakeleya’s hide out at Blachford Lake Lodge during a Dechinta visioning & planning retreat in November, 2015. Here, her hide is on the final smoke. This means that the hide has been soaked and rubbed in brain paste and solution and that it has been softened and scraped to satisfaction. After the final smoke the hide is ready to be used as a leather.  This smoking method is called a “flat smoke”. The hide is laid flat over top peeled logs above a smoke pit, as pictured above. Charred or rotten spruce wood, a.k.a “tinchur” in Denesuline or “dah’shaa” in Tlicho, is lit on fire to produce a tiny flame and an abundance of smoke. This rotten, orange wood can be found wherever a spruce tree has fallen and when moss begins to cover the limbs of the tree. Kick the moss off, throw your work gloves on and gather the bits of rotten spruce wood in a bucket. Some people like to use the larger chunks of wood for smoking and other folks prefer to use the tiny little crumbs of wood. Either way is suitable. This smoke is what gives traditional brain-tanned moosehide its’ one-of-a-kind smell and coloring. Smoking the hide also helps it to absorb the brain paste, as explained in a few of my posts below.

Not a pretty photo, but today included rehydrating my wolverine's face a bit too assess how well it will fit on the manikin head I have for it. Completely dry, the skin looked way too small, now it looks just about right if I shave down the ventral neck foam a bit. Thought I had ordered a forward facing mannikin head, but it definitely turns slightly to the viewer's right. Not sure how I feel about this..... #heads #taxidermy #wolverine #artist #sculpture #softmount #oddities #fur #furry #hidetanning #hobby #workinprogress #cabinetofcuriosities #vultureculture #create https://www.instagram.com/p/BuAmv6ZFoSW/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1c2uey989w3lj
