Naga Ninja!

Whenever [CARD] deals combat damage to a player, create a token that’s a copy of [CARD].”

Wow! This is not an ability I was expecting on a ninja, but I think it’s super super nice! One of the main problems of ninja decks (aside from having enough ninjas) is micromanaging the creatures you have on the board and the ones you have in hand. Once ninjas are on the board, your opponents will be very reluctant to let them get hit by them, so you have to use unblockable (like Higure, the Still Wind) or recursion effects (like Walker of Secret Ways) to repeat the process. The fact that this gives you a token that it in itself has a “ninja effect”, albeit one that your opponents (in edh at least) shouldn’t be too mindful of is great, because it gives you more expendable attackers!

All 3 ninjas we’ve seen so far are great in their unique ways (Fallen Shinobi is a great value stealer, Ingenious Infiltrator is an amazing engine, and this helps with one of the core weaknesses of the deck), so I’m already very satisfied even if we only get a couple more minor ones!

Legend of the Week: Higure, the Still Wind

So if you weren’t around during the Kamigawa block, it had a LOT of legends. And I mean a lot. Some of them had very important roles in the story, some not so much. But one of the great things that Kamigawa blessed us with was ninjas. Because obviously who doesn’t love ninjas. We got tons of cool ninjas in the block and many of them had the awesome ninjitsu ability which demostrates their skill in stealth and combat. Not much is known about Higure, except that he is incredibly stealthy, so much so that he is known as the Still Wind. It is also understood that he has quite a few ninjas under his employ. And I suppose it’s fitting that we don’t know too much about Higure....he is a mysterious ninja assassin after all. Kamigawa block took place in the very distant past, so it’s unknown if we’ll ever see this master of ninjas again. But IF we somehow do, I wouldn’t mind learning more about this enigmatic figure.

Thieves in the Night

I’ve run a janky ninja deck with Vela at it’s helm for going on 4 years now. I seldom ever make any edits to it and it’s a budget brew on not much more than principles alone. It’s entire incentive until the release of Yuriko here was to steal people’s cards and win with those. I’d designed it all those moons ago because there was a friend in our playgroup at the time who had a lot more money than the rest of us. He had multiple cards in his deck worth more than any of our decks by themselves and I had grown a little tired of it. Now that there’s finally a U/B Ninja to pilot it, I decided to make a couple small changes and bring the deck to you folks!

Let’s start by talking about Yuriko. She gives the deck a lot more bite than previous iterations, making the damage potential your ninja’s can have much higher. Instead of them being tricky plays for some damage and some value, now they can take serious chunks of life from the opponents while generating even more value. 

While all of our ninja’s can put in some work, none quite benefit the deck the way Higure does. Tutoring for whichever Ninja benefits us the most at the time while also allowing us to make any ninja unblockable for a measly 2 mana makes him impressive. Silent-Blade Oni on the other hand lends more towards the style of deck this was created to be, which is one that plays other people’s cards because we can’t afford them. If you can hit with Walker of the Secret Ways first to see the hands around the table you can try to either disrupt someone’s game-plan or just steal the best card around. Ink-Eyes fits in a similar vein, and doesn’t have as much of a risk || reward factor to her. You know what’s in people’s graveyards, so there’s no real chance of whiffing on her ability. Regeneration also makes her much more resilient than the other ninjas. Sakashima’s Student gets to clone the best ETB, Mistblade can be a sweet tempo play, Deep Hours draws cards, and Throat Slitter kills stuff. Walker of the Secret Ways allows us some interesting combat interactions, allowing us to bounce blocked ninja’s back to our hand and replace them with unblocked creatures. This creates this morphing, malleable board that’s very hard to interact with in a traditional combat sense.

While there is a lot of cool tech to be discussed when dealing with a deck full of unblockables, I think my favorite is the mechanic Cipher so I’m gonna highlight it here. You basically get to cast the spell twice the turn you play it, and once more every turn after until the creature is answered. Cloning the best creature on board on repeat is always fun, or you can just clone your own Perplexing Chimera over and over like I like to do. Ninjas aren’t cast when using Ninjitsu, so it can create this complete chaos where you have the upper hand. Whispering Madness lets you wheel every turn, and can be a massive value swing if you’ve emptied out your hand. You can also cast a spell or two after you resolve it, play a land, and then swing in to wheel again and fill back up. Undercity plague is just neat when placed on repeat. :)
