February is a great time to escape the grey weather in London by going to tropical paradise like Sri Lanka. Beautiful nature and romantic sunsets, to cash only and dodginess – here is why Sri Lanka can be fun!

After nearly 20 hrs journey from London to Colombo (it was connecting flight, and spent couple of hours at Bahrain), we landed and although it was late evening – it was still so warm and smelled like sea! Local people seemed friendly and welcoming. Immediately we got many offers for “You need a taxi, Madame?”.

We got picked up by a local driver, arranged in advance. It is easy to book a driver before your trip in Sri Lanka – just check reviews on Trip advisor and make a call. It is more expensive than relying on tuk tuks (local taxis) and public transport, but if you want to see the best of the island over few days – driver is the most comfortable option. Prices also vary, so it is good to speak to several providers and see the best quote. Usually a driver for a week would cost around $360 per person (tourist price).

Colombo

We stayed at a hostel on the beach in Colombo that was an hour away from the airport. On the way we got to see the city – long streets full of local shops and street food places, and loads of “don’t drive and drink” billboards. Actually, local Out of home advertisement reminds me old school European ads – big billboards with loads of pictures and big bright messaging. The pics reminded me of old toothpaste ads. On every corner there was a Buddhist or Christian monument, decorated with similar to Christmas lights. That was kinda of cool. I don’t remember seeing mosques, though it is one of the main religions on the island. Overall Colombo is busy and chaotic city, with usual crazy traffic and drivers taking over at all times. There are not many pedestrian zones (even side walks) and crossing a busy street is a challenge. I noticed locals just start walking on the road, and the cars just stop if no other option. If you visit Sri Lanka for limited time – do not waste time in Colombo.

Our hostel was near the beach, so it was great to hear the waves in the evening and wake up to that sounds in the morning. I was happy to see this in view in the morning:

We were hosted by other travellers there, and spent the evening chilling outside in the garden with a cold beer. Apparently some of them were staying in the hostel for months, hanging out together and basically created mini community. I was talking to one of the guys there, who was working on his PHD and travelling around Asia – he was loving Sri Lanka and the “chaos”. Good place to be when you want to escape the old boring and organised Europe. It is cool to be solo traveller, meet new people and create friendships, but then what’s the point of travelling if you get stuck in 1 place for ages? This is what I did not get about these guys. Plus, the beach is 10 secs walk from LBL Colombo (the hostel) but it is so dirty. It looked like locals use it for trash landfill. It’s a shame, given the golden sands!

In any case, I loved the “romantic” bed we had in our room, which was actually anti mosquito bed:

Btw, payment is normally at the check out – and everywhere you pay in cash only. It was funny that the owner of the hostel asked us which rate we were given on booking.com as he did not know the price himself. LOL. He was so chatty though that took us 20 mins to “check out” and go get some water!

Anyway, it was time to head south to the beach in Hikkaduwa.

Hikkaduwa

It’s a small resort town on the South West coast. We stayed at a beautiful guest house “in the jungle”. Villa Red Lobster – it was my favourite accommodation in Sri Lanka – with its beautiful garden, palm trees, birds singing in the morning and fancy room, I was sold. Not to forget the delicious breakfast in the garden.

It was also several mins walk from the beach, which was great!

Hikkaduwa beach is beautiful – golden fine sand, warm water, and palm trees. The coast line is tripped with bars and restaurants, hotels and shops. I loved talking a walk along the beach, sand, sea and sun – paradise for my feet.

Not so great is the busy road Colombo – Galle, which is right next to the beach. Crossing there can be deadly, and you see old buses and cars, among pedestrians on the side. Health & Safety does not exist here.

You can buy a coconut to eat/drink for 200 rupees on the beach. Good for breakfast, but cannot replace the beer! Actually, females are not allowed to buy alcohol in Sri Lanka. If you are a female tourist – it is fine, you get the drink you want…eventually. I got into a alcohol shop and tried to get some beers. The sales guy called me to come in, got the beers at the back of the shop, put them in the backpack to hide what we bought and left. I was surprised given the number of tourists and backpackers there. It is similar with restaurants – alcohol is not in the menu, but when you ask the waiter for beers – it does not come to them as a surprise. Most people drink the local beer: LION. Sometimes it can cost up to 750 ruppies (£3) which is nearly the same as drinking cocktails in SL. I bet the brand is doing well, because of all the tourists – as locals do not cope with alcohol that well and local ladies are not drinking there.

Food wise – most restaurants offer mainstream European food – pizza, pasta, burgers. I was glad to find some curry in the menus, as I have heard that this is the best place to taste curry. Tourism industry had made the food quite commercial and in terms of curry – nothing special. I personally think you can find more curries in London (and good curries) than in Sri Lankan restaurants. To try proper local food – you need to go to their street food places, which may not look very appealing especially if there are flies around. If the food is cooked in front of you – it should be fine and it is tasty! We tried a local place, and the food there was pretty good! Also, local people do not eat out and thus restaurants only exist to serve tourists. Often you will see tables in restaurants labelled with “For foreigners only“. I find this discriminative, though it makes sense for local businesses. For example – compare the two:

In any case, I enjoyed having dinner at a open restaurant also called “Red Lobster”. It was quite artsy / urban style – walls were decorated with customers feedback. Most of it was from Russians and people from other Soviet republics (the majority of tourists there are Russians, and apparently Sri Lanka is a popular family holiday destination for them.)

I was happy with my calamari curry and pineapple desert. Sri Lanka is the place to have fresh smoothies and fruit salads – avocado, papaya and pineapple everywhere! Again, the staff were friendly and smiley. That made me an impression – in Europe we are way more grumpy, well at least the customer service is.

To end the night – we made a visit to the top rated beach bar “Refresh”. Indeed, it is a stylish bar on the beach, so getting a glass of wine on a candle light, hearing the ocean waves is pretty cool. I get why Sri Lanka is so popular among couples.

I would stay the staff there was over friendly – started with a nice chat, as we were approached by a guy working in the bar N. He seemed chilled and joint us on our table (not sure how professional that is?). It all seemed perfect – nice conversation, drinks, more drinks and at some point free bottle of arrack (local spirit drink, often mixed with ginger beer). Result is: drunk N and us wanting to leave. The last customers had left long time ago, bar was officially closed and N wanted to come with us, so he followed us on our way to the hotel. We told him “No, we will go alone” and he must have understood somethig else, because he came back with his motorbike asking to join him! OK, this was not funny anymore – we even walked into another bar to get rid of him, still did not work. After several more attempts – we managed to convince him to go away and we rushed into our hotel. So yeah, beware of local men hospitality if you are on your own at night. Btw, night life in Hikkaduwa is overall restricted – most places are closed by 11. Once or twice a week there is a bar open until 1 am (usually Mama’s or Refresh) and this is the time to get some cocktails and dance it out. These are the places to try good quality sea food.

Galle

After 2 days in Hikkaduwa, we headed to the close by town of Galle. It is beautiful coastal town with a tower along the coast, couple of heritage sites, museum and cute artsy streets. Be ware – there are local people, carrying around anacondas – if you fancy a pic with one. I usually go as far as possible from snakes – don’t like the look of it.

Galle is worth a daily visit, walk along the tower and enjoying the scenery. The beach near by is really beautiful, though waves there were quite strong.

Jag minns att någon gång i september när vi satt hemma på Åkermansgatan och brorsan gick igenom Australien med oss, vad han tyckte att vi skulle göra osv. Han sa då att deras vistelse i Brisbane var sisådär och Brisbane var världens tråkigaste stad. Samtidigt som vi under resans gång fått höra av bl.a. Vicke & Nicke som varit här innan att Brisbane varit rätt bra. Nu när vi spenderat nästan tre dagar här och utforskat staden själva kan vi inte säga att det är världens tråkigaste stad då vi inte har en aning om hur t.ex. Kiruna är. Det vi kan säga är väl att Brisbane inte är jättemycket att hänga i julgranen helt enkelt. Trots detta har vi kunnat roa oss de dagarna vi varit här men några fler dagar hade blivit långtråkiga. Förutom att ha gått en jäkla massa så har vi även tagit det lugnt och legat vid den lagun som finns i staden nere vid området south bank. Väldigt skönt att kunna bada dessa dagar då det varit soligt och på dagarna uppemot 35°C. När det är som varmast är även solen som farligast så det gäller att vara noggrann med solskyddet. Det säljs som lägst 50 i solskydd i butikerna här. En kväll besteg vi även ett berg vid namn Mount Coot-Tha och kom upp till utkiksplatsen där man kunde blicka ut över hela staden, väldigt fint! Och nej jag vet inte riktigt om jag kan säga att vi besteg ett berg då vi tog en Uber-taxi hela vägen upp/ner 😛 Men då det var nästan 9km enkel väg från där vi bodde tyckte vi det var lite långt så det fick bli dryga 50kr var till en chaufför istället... I skrivande stund sitter vi på bussen som skall ta oss till Noosa som vi hört ska vara väldigt fint. SUP är det enda som är spikat på schemat. SUP = Stand up paddle. Sen bor vi på Nomads hostel, där det tydligen ska vara mest folk och fart på. Inte omöjligt att det blir lite partaj nej. Dryga 2h tar bussresan mellan Brisbane och Noosa. Tänker tillbaka på bussresan i Sri lanka mellan Nuwara Eliya och Hikkaduwa, dryga 7 timmars buss utan AC.. förstår fortfarande inte hur vi överlevde den resan. Något bättre nu lär jag säga! Hikkaduwa

Sri Lanka! So finally after a day of travel we are in hikkaduwa. Getting here wasn’t to bad, flights with Oman air were good and getting though Imagration was easy as we had already done our evisa so just a fill in of the arrival card and you’re in. We changed cash into rupees at the airport and there are a lot to choice from but all offer the same price. If you have a card that lets you get cash out do it at an ATM as I think it’s a better rate but not much. Bit of a change of plan when getting to hikkaduwa as we were going to get a tuk tuk to the bus stop (170rp), then bus to Colombo (200rp) and then the train to hikkaduwa (300 RP). We ended up getting a taxi which cost us 2000rp each so a it more expensive but we got a really good deal by just going out of the airport. Air-conditioning and door to door service not to mention the 4 hours it saved us was worth the extra £7. We are staying at the relax Inn which is simple but nice @ 1000rp a night each. We went out about 4 30 after some well earned sleep and to miss the main heat and headed to the beach. Swimming in boardshorts around tropical fish was a far cry from a freezing surf in the Atlantic. After we found a bar called mumas and had fish curry. It was alot of food and yummy. So totals Taxi 2000rp Accommodation 1000rp Curry and coke 800rp Water 5l 180 Total 3980rp so 20rp in budget

Planning a trip to a new country can be overwhelming. That is why I put together this guide on everything you need to know when planning a trip to Sri Lanka. In just one place, all your questions will be answered.

Visa

You will need a tourist visa to visit Sri Lanka. You must apply for this in advance –you can apply here. This is a quick and easy process, it will take 5 minutes and will cost approximately $35 USD.

These Visas are valid for 30 days so take this into consideration when booking flights.

Flights

Sri Lanka’s main airport is in Colombo. I used Sky Scanner to book my flights, paying $350 AUD from Australia’s Gold Coast (without bags). I always opt to take carry on where I can.

Weather

The weather in Sri Lanka is dictated by two monsoon seasons which bring rain to the west and south-west coasts from May to September; and the east coast and northern region between October and February. The rest of the year is sunny and dry. Temperatures are fairly constant year round, with coastal regions enjoying average temperatures of 25-30°C and the highlands 15-18°C on average.

During our visit in April, we experienced perfect sunny days and thunderstorms in the afternoon. These never lasted long.

Phone and internet

I recommend getting a Sri Lankan sim card from Colombo Airport. As you exit you will see several service providers offering sim cards.

Dialog has the best coverage and is the provider I recommend. The retail assistant at Dialog will be able to set the sim up for you. Ensure it is working properly before you leave.

A sim with 10GB will cost you around 1500 rupees (Approx 10USD)

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is a necessity. I recommend World Nomads.

Recently, however, I arranged a new credit card that covers all my travel insurance. If you travel a lot, this is something I recommend looking into. I can save up to $1,000 a year on travel insurance.

Currency exchange

You can use the Money Converter website to find out current exchange rates.

I found the best option in Sri Lanka was to withdraw cash from an ATM with a travel money card or bank card.

If you do carry cash, I recommend exchanging it in the airport. Alternatively, you can exchange cash in any bank.

Sri Lankan Rupees are a closed currency so you won’t be able to get Sri Lankan rupees until you arrive. There are plenty of places to exchange cash at the airport.

Accommodation

There are ample options for accommodation in Sri Lanka, ranging from guest houses, bed and breakfasts, Airbnb, hotels and resorts. As per usual, I recommend using booking.com to search for accommodation.

In comparison to other Asian countries, accommodation options are slightly more expensive / offer less value for money.

Transport in Sri Lanka

The cheapest way to get around Sri Lanka is using public transport, the quickest way to get around is by hiring a driver.

Train travel is popular in Sri Lanka as it is cheap and reliable(ish).  Seats can be reserved in person at a train station up to 45 days before the trip. Scenic routes, such as Ella to Nuwara Eliya fill up fast, so make sure you book these tickets in advance.

Bus – Bus travel is another cheap way to get around Sri Lanka, but be careful, the buses drive like crazy.

Tuk-tuk – If you are travelling short distances (less than an hour), the best option will be to get a tuk-tuk. Always agree on a price before you get in.

Hire a driver – As I only had 2 weeks in Sri Lanka and wanted to see a lot, I opted to hire a driver. We used the Facebook group – Sri Lanka Taxi Driver Offers to find our drivers. Expect to pay between 5000 rupees(30USD) to 10000 rupees(65USD) per day/trip.

Example of what I paid:

Airport to Midigama – 7000 rupees (Approx 45USD)

Tangalle to Udawalawe – 5000 rupees (Approx 30USD)

Udawalawe to Ella – 5000 rupees (Approx 30USD)

Kandy to Sigiriya (return)- 6000 rupees (Approx 40USD)

Kandy to Hikkaduwa – 10000 rupees (Approx 65USD)

Your hotel will also be able to arrange a driver for you, but it will cost more than the above prices we paid when using the Facebook Group.

Sri Lanka Taxi Share is another Facebook Group that allows you to share rides with other travellers to save money.

If you plan on staying in one destination for a few days, hiring a moped (scooter) is a great option for getting around with ease. On the Southern beaches we paid 800 rupees (5USD) per day and in Ella, we paid 2000 (12USD) rupees per day. When hiring a moped or motorbike, always make sure you have the required documents, and confirm if the hire is for 24 hours or day to day. Meaning, some people will expect you to pay for a full day even if you collect the bike at 4 pm.

If you plan on hiring a bike, you will need an International drivers license. After you arrive in Sri Lanka you must apply for a Driving Permit at AAA Ceylon as driving on your international license without registering it in Sri Lanka is Ilegal and you could get in “trouble”. If you do get pulled over, you will most likely have to pay a fee to the police officer, a situation you are better off avoiding.

When planning your transport. take into account, it is time-consuming to get around Sri Lanka, so if you try to see and do too much, you will feel like you are spending most of your time on a bus, train or in a car.

Planning your route

Sri Lanka has something for everyone: stunning mountain ranges, tea plantations, breathtaking waterfalls, wildlife safari in one of Sri Lanka’s national parks like Yala or Udawalawe, world-class beaches, surf breaks, UNESCO world heritage sites like Sigiriya, temples and more.

When planning your route, you must take into account how long it will take to travel between places. You may be best trying to cover less but doing more in the destinations you do visit.

I would recommend a week by the beach (Southern Provence), a week in the highlands (Central Provence) and a week in the North.

In my opinion, Ella is a destination in Sri Lanka that is not to be missed. I live for hiking so a trip to Ella was always on the agenda and it certainly didn’t disappoint. I also wanted to see the tropical surfing beaches, Midigama was my favourite beach destination.

If your visiting for culture, Kandy would be a great place to add to the itinerary and if you want to get off the beaten track you may want to explore more of the islands northern region.

Tourist most commonly travel to the Southern Beaches, Arugum Bay, Ella, Kandy and Negombo.

Cost of travelling around Sri Lanka

When planning a trip to Sri Lanka, it is important to consider the cost of travelling. While Sri Lanka is affordable, it is not as cheap as other destinations in Asia.

Transport – If you take public transport you can get around the country extremely cheaply. You can get from A to B for a couple of dollars. If you take a driver, that will be significantly more expensive.

Food – if you eat local food, your food expense will be much cheaper than if you eat western food. On average you will pay around 450 Rupees (3USD) for a Sri Lankan curry, 450 rupees (3USD) for Kottu and 250 Rupees (2USD) for Rotti.  If you eat western food you will pay more, around 1000 rupees (7USD) for pizza, burgers, pasta etc.

Safety

I recommend exercising all usual precautions when travelling Sri Lanka. These are my tips for keeping safe.

Sinhalese and Tamil are the two primary languages spoken in Sri Lanka

Here are some useful phrases you should know before you go:

Ayubowan = may you live long, a formal way of greeting someone. You can also just say “hello” or “hi”

Istuti = thank you

Kohomadha = how are you?

Hari = okay, got it, fine (you often say this twice – “hari hari”)

Lassanai = beautiful

Hondayi = very good
