The idea first came to Haruka during an outing to the market. 

Haruka had decided to tag along with Himari to buy groceries for the upcoming week. It was usually Kiryu who went with, but due to Eri catching the cold going around school recently, Haruka stepped up to the plate and took her uncle’s place instead. Himari seemed really happy with the eleven-year-old’s decision. It had been a while since they spent any one-on-one time together without Kiryu or any of the other kids tagging along, so the idea of just the two of them doing something as mundane as buying groceries seemed all the more fun now.

The market was as noisy and busy as always, causing Haruka to keep a tight grip on her aunt’s hand as they navigated the booths for every last item on the paper list Kiryu had made for them. They had made it halfway through the list when a woman approached Himari. Haruka recognized this woman almost immediately as Mrs. Shirogane, the mother of one of Ayako’s friends. The two women began chatting as Mrs. Shirogane trailed alongside them, not allowing the fact that the guardian-child duo were in the middle of their shopping trip to deter the conversation. It was while scanning over a booth full of fresh vegetables that she heard a question that peaked Haruka’s interest.

“And what about you and Kiryu-san? It’s difficult as is for me and Katsuki to find the time with our boys running around, but you two have to look after nine kids! How do manage to have time for just the two of you?”

Haruka tried to be discreet as she glanced up at Himari, but she wasn’t able to get a good look. From what Haruka could see, Himari’s smile was thin, almost like she was forcing it. Was the question upsetting her? Was Mrs. Shirogane’s presence bothering her but she wasn’t saying anything out of politeness? Haruka didn’t like it when either of her guardians were upset and she was about to speak up, but Himari beat her to it.

“This isn’t a conversation I want to have in a public market, Kotori-san. Especially in the presence of one of my kids.”

Mrs. Shirogane immediately looked embarrassed and quickly apologized, which Himari was just as quick to accept. It wasn’t much longer until the other woman was excusing herself and saying goodbye before disappearing in the crowds around them. When Haruka looked back at Himari, her face was back to the peaceful smile she wore prior to Mrs. Shirogane’s appearance. Haruka was pleased to see this, but there was still that strange nagging at the back of her mind. What was Mrs. Shirogane talking about when she mentioned the kids at Morning Glory? Was she trying to make fun of them? Say something in a polite tone so no one could pick up on their real meaning? And what was with that part about Uncle Kaz and Aunt Hima ‘finding time for just the two of them’? They always spent time together without them! They were always awake when the rest of them went to bed, so there was no question they hung out every night. And besides, they loved each other! Would you open an orphanage and take in a bunch of kids with someone if you didn’t love them?

“Aunt Hima?” Haruka spoke up as they walked home with their bags of shopping. “Did Mrs. Shirogane say something to make you upset?”

Himari furrowed her brows at Haruka. “Why do you ask?”

“Well, you looked like you were forcing yourself to smile when she was asking about you and Uncle Kaz spending time together without us kids. Were you trying to be polite?”

Himari’s eyes widened slightly before she turned back to the road in front of them. “You saw all that?”

“Yup. I’m not a stupid kid, you know. I can tell when you and Uncle Kaz are upset. I wanted to say something to make you feel better, but I didn’t.”

“I see. Well, thank you for not saying anything. I think I embarrassed Kotori-san enough with how I spoke to her.” Himari sighed and shook her head. “Some people just want to prod and poke into other people’s lives for no reason other than they’re bored or unhappy with their own.”

“Is that why she asked about you and Uncle Kaz?” Haruka asked, looking up at Himari.

“Perhaps.” Himari then met Haruka’s eyes and smiled. “But that’s not something for you to worry about. Your Uncle Kaz and I love each other very much and always find time to spend together with or without you and the others.”

“What kind of things do you do together?”

Himari pursed her lips in thought. “Hmm… Most of the time we just sit near each other in silence. For instance, we sat on the porch after you kids went to bed and I worked on my Sudoku book while your uncle smoked. Just enjoy each others’ presence, you know?”

Haruka frowned. “That sounds so boring, though.”

“To you, maybe. But for me and Uncle Kaz, it was nice. A nice way to relax after a long day. So long as you like being around the person you’re spending time with, almost anything can be fun.”

“But what do you two do for fun?”

“Well, when we still lived in Kamurocho, we would go sing karaoke, go to the arcade, get a drink or two, and sometimes we would just walk around the city and talk. I usually worked on the weekends and Kaz had unpredictable hours for a bit, so we took whatever chances we could to spend time together.”

“But what do you do now?”

Himari took a moment to respond, her eyes never leaving the path before them as sidewalk turned into the sandy terrain of the beach Morning Glory resided on. “We just… exist, I suppose. We don’t really find the need to leave the house unless it’s for an errand or to go somewhere with you kids.”

“Oh.”

The conversation seemed to stop there as the two of them finally arrived home. The rest of the night went on without much gusto; Himari and Kiryu made dinner, they all ate together like any other night, and the kids were allowed to play outside until nightfall. It was during this free time that Haruka decided to gather the other girls together near Mame’s house to share what she experienced earlier… and the idea it gave her.

“A date for Uncle Kaz and Aunt Hima?” Riona echoed once Haruka finished explaining her idea. 

Haruka nodded confidently. “Exactly. A night where they can spend time together without any of us being around.”

“Without us?” Eri asked, her head titled slightly in confusion. “What are they gonna do?”

Haruka shrugged. “I don’t know. Maybe walk around town? I know Uncle Kaz likes arcades so maybe they’ll do that?”

“Oh,” Izumi piped up from where she sat near the fence. “If they go to the arcade, do you think we can ask them to bring us toys from the crane machines?”

“No, Izumi-chan. They don’t know they’re going on the date yet!”

“Then how are we going to get them to go on the date?” Ayako asked, arms crossed and face furrowed in confusion. “Uncle Kaz and Aunt Hima don’t like leaving the house unless it’s something important or if one of us kids want to go out.”

This made Haruka grin. “Exactly. We ask them to take us to the arcade and then leave them there so they can go on their date!”

“What are you going on about?” A new voice reached them and all the girls turned to see Taichi, Koji, and Mitsuo returning home from the beach, each of them sweaty and red-faced from whatever sports they were playing.

“Haruka-chan is trying to arrange for Uncle Kaz and Aunt Hima to go on a date.” Ayako explained, being the girl standing the closest to the approaching boys.

Koji’s face scrunched up in a grimace. “Why would you want them to go on a date?”

“So they can spend time together without one of us bothering them.” Haruka responded, her arms crossed over her chest.

“You do realize they’re gonna like… hold hands and kiss and other gross stuff like that, right?”

Taichi fake gagged while Mitsuo’s face turned bright red in response to Koji’s question. The girls, naturally, weren’t phased.

“I just want them to have a night to themselves.” Haruka’s eyes focused on her sandals as she spoke. “They do so much for us and never get to relax. They deserve to have at least one night where they can relax and have fun, don’t they?”

Silence lingered over the group of children for a short while before Ayako reached over and put a hand on Haruka’s shoulder.

“I want the same thing, Haruka-chan.” She said with a sweet smile. “So I’ll help you with this.”

“Me too!” Eri chirped, jumping in excitement.

“Me three!” Came Izumi’s response as she pushed herself up to her feet. Riona was nodding along from where she stood close by.

Haruka grinned at her sisters just as the sound of someone awkwardly clearing their throat reached her ears and she turned to see Mitsuo standing closer than before but still red in the face.

“If it’s to show how much we appreciate them,” He gulped before giving a firm nod. “I want to help too.”

Haruka nodded back. “Thank you, Mitsuo-kun.” She then turned to Taichi and Koji.

Koji kept her stare for a few moments before finally letting out a defeated groan. “I’ll help, but I better not see them kissing or I’m gonna puke.”

“I promise you won’t see anyone kissing.” Haruka reassured him before turning finally to Taichi. “Taichi-kun? Are you going to help too?”

Taichi tapped his chin as if he was considering it. “Hmm… are we gonna get snacks during this?”

Haruka rolled her eyes. “If it’s gonna take ice cream to get you to help, we can stop at the ice cream shop at some point and get some. Deal?”

“Deal!” 

“Alright, let’s get to work!”

“Wait!” Everyone turned to look at Ayako. “What about Shiro? Would he wanna help?”

“Maybe.” Replied Haruka. “Let’s go find him and ask.”

And with that, the group of kids went hustling into their house in search of their missing brother, just in time for the sun to complete it’s descent into the horizon and the moon to take its place in the sky.

It was the following Friday evening, four days after the market incident, and the plan for the children of Morning Glory to set their guardians up for a surprise date night was all but ready to be put into motion. Just as Ayako predicted, Shiro was more than willing to help with the plan (even more so when Taichi mentioned the promised ice cream). As the majority of them walked home from school that afternoon, the final details were decided on; Haruka would plant fake notes in obvious places for Himari and Kiryu to find, appearing to be from each other and requesting for a meeting in front of the arcade just after dark. Then before either of them could question the other about the notes, the girls will distract Himari while the boys did the same with Kiryu until it was time for the planned meeting, in which the adults will meet up as planned and the kids will sneak off to get ice cream to celebrate a job well done. 

While the chances of Himari and Kiryu simply refusing to go to the meeting or just going directly home after the surprise is revealed are quite high, Haruka was still confident for some reason. From how Himari spoke during their walk home that day, it seemed like she was distracted, maybe remembering the dates she and Kiryu had in the past before Haruka entered their lives. Did she miss going on dates? Did she and her siblings really take up so much of their time that they weren’t able to spend quality time together? Whatever the reason, Haruka was firm in her belief that this was something they have been wanting to do for a long time and just hadn’t found the time to do so.

It was this resolve and determination that made Haruka encourage (or in Taichi’s opinion, brutally force) her siblings to finish their homework as soon as possible so the main part of their plan could be put into motion. She had written the fake notes beforehand and was just waiting for the perfect time to plant them. Said opportunity came when Kiryu announced that he was going to take Mame out for a walk while Himari began working on dinner. Haruka quickly handed Himari’s fake note to Koji just before he and the rest of the boys rushed outside to join their uncle. As soon as the group disappeared behind the fence, Haruka returned to the kitchen.

“Aunt Hima!” Haruka called as she entered the space. “Uncle Kaz wanted me to give you this note.”

Himari looked up from the already-boiling pot and quirked and eyebrow at the slip of paper in the girl’s hand. “A note? Let me see.”

Haruka didn’t hesitate to hand the note over, but a sense of nervousness crept over her as she watched Himari scan her eyes repeatedly over the paper. The feeling peaked when the older woman’s eyes suddenly turned to Haruka herself, causing her to try and make herself look relaxed and oblivious to the note.

“What does it say?” She asked, trying to keep her voice calm and curious.

Himari continued to watch her for a few more moments before finally relenting and returning her gaze to the note. “Your uncle wants me to meet him at the arcade downtown after dark. Rather suspicious.”

“What do you mean?” Asked Haruka, still trying to act oblivious.

“Rather inconvenient of him to make such a sudden request like this. It’ll be dark soon, which doesn’t give me nearly as enough time to make dinner, eat said dinner, clean up the dishes, and then meet him at the arcade.”

“I can make dinner for everyone instead, Aunt Hima.” Haruka said, already moving towards the stove. “Just tell me what you’re trying to make and I’ll make sure it gets made and everyone eats it!”

Himari narrowed her eyes at her daughter, but Haruka could tell it wasn’t in anger. No, she was definitely sensing something about Haruka’s performance, maybe catching on to how out-of-character everything really was tonight. But her following response miraculously gave Haruka’s faltering confidence a second wind.

“I planned on making stir fry tonight. Shouldn’t be too much trouble, right?”

“Yup! I’ll take care of it. See you later, Aunt Hima.”

When Haruka picked up the knife and began cutting the vegetables, she could feel Himari’s eyes still watching her before she heard the sound the retreating footsteps and a far door sliding open and close. Haruka had to take a deep breath to calm her nerves. She didn’t like lying, especially to her guardians, but would they have agreed to the idea in the first place? She was sure they would brush it off and insist that they didn’t need to have a date night. No, this was the better way. She could only hope they won’t be too mad when they came back.

Not long after Himari left for the arcade, what was left of any outside light was gone and night had fully settled across Okinawa. The stir fry was done and set aside with a lid on the pot to try and retain any heat for later eating. Haruka had just stepped out onto the porch when her brothers finally came hustling toward the house with Mame keeping with their pace.

“Where’s Uncle Kaz?” She asked.

“Arcade.” Taichi said, slightly panting. “Told us to head straight home while he figured out what was up with the note.”

Haruka frowned as she turned to Koji. “Was he suspicious?”

“Instantly.” He replied, folding his arms across his chest. “Thought it was a staged note and someone abducted her or something. He figured out that it wasn’t her handwriting the second I gave it to him and grilled me for answers before heading off.”

Haruka gulped. “Oh no.”

“Are we still getting ice cream?” Eri’s voice called from behind as she, Izumi, and Ayako appeared in the doorway.

“Heck yeah we are!” Shiro exclaimed. “Right, Haruka-chan?”

“Erm…” She nodded hesitantly. “Yeah. I’ll grab my money and we’ll get going before the shop closes.”

The sound of her sibling’s excited cheers followed her as she retreated into her room to grab her wallet, but the anxiety in her stomach kept her attention. She should have known Kiryu would pick up on how her handwriting was different from Himari’s. Maybe that’s why Himari was instantly suspicious too? Of course they would know how each other’s handwriting would look! They had been together for over ten years! How could Haruka be so stupid?

But then there was a new question; even if they picked up on this, why was Himari still willing to go along with it?

This was the single thought swimming through Haruka’s head as she rejoined with her siblings outside and all nine of them headed off towards town.

Himari knew the note was a rouse the second her eyes recognized Shiro’s handwriting. 

Sure, she could have pointed this own and demanded answers out of the eleven-year-old, but there had to be a reason she would do something like this, right? Their post-market conversation was still fresh in Himari’s mind. Could her honesty about her and Kiryu’s lack of private time be the catalyst for such a stunt? But then again, there were still moments where Kazuma Kiryu managed to pull a fast one on her in the name of keeping the romance alive in their relationship. Perhaps this was just another one of those specific stunts.

Himari had been standing outside of the downtown arcade for about fifteen minutes when she spotted an all-too-familiar Hawaiian shirt come stalking down the street. She was smirking at first, but it was gone the second she saw the intense look in Kiryu’s eyes. She’s seen that look many times before. It meant he was on his way to rescue someone and beat the shit out of the person who dared hurt someone he cared about.

“Kazuma?” Himari stepped away from the wall she was leaning against and cautiously approached him once he was close enough. “Are you alright?”

Once he was standing directly in front of her, the intensity of Kiryu’s gaze softened slightly but still held its sharpness. “Koji gave me a note. Said it was from you and you wanted to meet me here.” He then pulled a slip of paper out of his pocket. “It’s not your handwriting.”

Himari’s eyebrows shot up as a flurry of giggles erupted out of her. Kiryu’s anger was immediately replaced with bewilderment as his partner was soon doubled over in laughter, one hand covering her mouth while her other rested on her stomach.

“Am I… missing something?” Kiryu asked.

It was a few more seconds before Himari settled down enough to stand up straight again. She took a couple deep breaths before responding.

“Haruka gave me a note from you saying that you wanted to meet up here.” She explained, coughing out a giggle in between words. “Of course, I knew immediately that it wasn’t your handwriting.”

It was now Kiryu’s turn for his eyebrows to shoot up in surprise.

Himari sighed and shook her head. “It would seem we have been set up by our own children, Kazuma.”

“What makes you believe that?”

“Well… I guess you can say it was my fault.”

Kiryu frowned. “How so?”

Himari scratched at the skin under her ear sheepishly. “I saw Kotori-san when Haruka and I were at the market the other day. We chatted a bit before she started asking about us and our relationship. You know how she can be kind of…”

“Nosy?” Kiryu asked.

“Yeah, that. Well, she asked about how you and I can find time for spend time privately while there were nine kids in the house and I… Well, I wanted to curse her out and put her on the spot in front of all of those people, but I kept my composure and told her I didn’t want to talk about something personal in front of Haruka. Thankfully, that made her back off, but I guess Haruka saw how uncomfortable I was with it all since she asked me questions about what kind of things you and I do together when we do find time for one another.”

During the whole time Himari spoke, Kiryu nodded along, his face returning to his natural stoicism and giving no sign of how her words made him feel. Once she was done, he let out a hum of understanding.

“I see.” He stuffed his hands in his pockets. “So, do you want to head home and see what Haruka has to say?”

Himari shook her head. “She went through all of this trouble for us to have a night to ourselves, Kazuma. Why don’t we make the most of it?”

Kiryu frowned. “You want to leave nine kids home alone at night?”

“Of course not. I was just going to propose that we get something at a food stand and walk along the beach. Nothing too crazy. And if something happens, we will be back at the orphanage in no time. Sound good to you?”

After a moment to think it over, Kiryu gave a nod. “Alright. What food stand did you have in mind.”

Himari wasted no time grabbing Kiryu’s wrist and leading him down the sidewalk, not stopping until she spotted a small takoyaki stand. After ordering two boxes, the couple made their way back towards the beach. As they strolled and talked, the steaming food in the Styrofoam boxes they held was quickly consumed. They didn’t stop talking after tossing the now empty boxes in a trash can or once they passed the fence and continued through the front yard. They did stop however, when they settled on sitting close together on the porch. At some point, Kiryu managed to light a cigarette and wrapped one arm around Himari’s shoulders while she rested her head on his, all while they sat in the comfortable silence of the night.

A silence that was shortly disturbed by the sound of chattering children coming up the path to the orphanage.

Himari and Kiryu barely managed to glance at each other just as their nine children came strolling into the front yard, each one of them holding a variety of ice cream.

“Having fun?” Himari called out, causing the children to jump in surprise. “I’ll take that as a ‘yes’.” 

“Did you two have fun?” Izumi responded, grinning ear-to-ear.

“What do you mean?” Kiryu asked, pressing the finished cigarette against the porch’s surface.

“On your date!” Eri chimed in. “We worked really hard on setting it up for you guys!”

“Yeah!” Piped up Taichi. “Haruka-chan and Shiro-kun wrote the notes and the rest of us distracted Uncle Kaz, but it was Haruka who did the bulk of it.”

“Really?” Himari asked in feigned surprise, her eyes landing on the ringleader herself. “Is this true, Haruka?”

Haruka nervously nodded. “After what happened at the market… I thought it would be a good idea for you and Uncle Kaz to have a night to yourselves.”

“Why weren’t you honest about what you wanted?” Kiryu was now pushing himself off of the porch, making Himari sit up. “Why did you think you had to trick us.”

“Because…” Haruka lowered her head. “Because I know you wouldn’t go along with it.”

“What?”

“You would brush it off and insist there is just too much to do for something like this. But you do so much for us and the orphanage. You two deserve to have a night to yourselves. To spend time together and remember how much you love each other.”

“Oh, Haruka.” Himari pushed herself onto her feet and rushed forward to wrap Haruka in a tight hug. “You didn’t have to do all of that, but I appreciate your feelings about it.”

“So do I.” Kiryu agreed, patting the girl on her head. “You have a good heart, Haruka. Just please don’t pull something like this again, okay? I honestly thought something happened to your Aunt Hima since it wasn’t her handwriting.”

Haruka mumbled a ‘sorry’ before stepping away from Himari’s embrace. 

“Come on,” Himari spoke up to the rest of the kids. “You can consider your ice cream your dinner tonight since its time for you all to head to bed!”

Groans sounded from the nine kids as they filed into the house. Just as Himari turned to follow after them, a pair of strong arms wrapped around her waist.

“You know,” Kiryu spoke, resting his chin on her shoulder. “This wasn’t such a bad idea. We should do this more often.”

Himari hummed, leaning back into his embrace. “You’re right. But next time, let’s actually go into the arcade and not just meet up outside of it.”

“Deal.”
