Dawn at Sylvensteinsee

This is the first time in many years that the water level is so low. We need more rain and snow! As I say in the video (link below), I was driving to Hinterriss and Eng Alm, when I saw the clouds over the lake and decided to stop for a couple of photographs. On This Day In Royal History

17 February 1861

Princess Helena of Waldeck and Pyrmont was born

Princess Helena, later Duchess of Albany; who became a member of the British royal family by marriage, was the fifth daughter & child of George Victor, Prince of Waldeck and Pyrmont & his first wife, Princess Helena of Nassau.

She was born in Arolsen, capital of Waldeck principality, in Germany. 

On 27 April 1882, Helena married Prince Leopold, youngest son of Queen Victoria in St. George's Chapel, Windsor Castle. After their wedding, Leopold & Helena resided at Claremont House. The couple had a brief, but happy marriage, ending in the hemophiliac Leopold's death from a fall in Cannes, France, in March 1884. At the time of Leopold's death, Helena was pregnant with their second child.

The couple had two children:

Princess Alice of Albany (1883-1981), later Countess of Athlone

Prince Charles, Duke of Albany (1884-1954), born posthumously, later Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.

According to the memoirs of Helena's daughter, Princess Alice of Albany, Helena was very intelligent, had a strong sense of duty, & a genuine love of welfare work. The Queen soon came to regard her young daughter-in-law with great respect & affection.

Before her marriage, Helena's father had made her superintendent of the infant schools in his principality, & in this position the Princess had devised the pupils' educational curriculum. Helena particularly enjoyed solving mathematical problems & reading philosophy: during their tragically brief marriage, Prince Leopold proudly introduced his wife to the circle of academics he'd befriended at Oxford University.

Helena was also involved in several hospital charities & with those dedicated to ending human trafficking. During World War I, she organised much of her charity work along with that of her sister-in-law Princess Beatrice & husband's niece Princess Marie-Louise to avoid the not-uncommon problem of conflicting (& sometimes misguided) royal war-work projects.

After Leopold's death, Helena & her two children, continued to reside at Claremont House. After the death of her nephew, the Hereditary Prince of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha in 1899, Helena's sixteen-year-old son was selected as the new heir to the German duchy, & was parted from his mother & sister in order to take up residence there. When the First World War broke out 14 years later, Charles Edward found himself fighting in the German Army. As a result, he was stripped of his British titles by an act of Parliament in 1917. By contrast, her daughter Alice remained in England & by marriage to Prince Alexander of Teck in 1904 became a sister-in-law of Queen Mary, consort of King George V.

Helena died on 1 September 1922 of a heart attack in Hinterriss in Tyrol, Austria, while visiting her son.

Through her son Charles Edward, Helena is the great-grandmother of Carl XVI Gustav, the current King of Sweden.

Tag 21: Karwendel Haus -> Fall (Sylvenstein-Stausee)

Bei Königswetter geht es hinab zum Ahornboden mit seinem alten Baumbestand und herrlichem Blick auf die schroffen Kalkgipfel. Weiter auf Forstwegen und Pfaden hinab nach Hinterriss, wo wir uns im Hotel Post stärken. Weiter an der Riss hinab Richtung Vorderriss, das wir umgehen. Bei Fall nehmen wir ein Bad im kalten Sylvenstein-Stausee. Danach geht es zum Abendessen in das nahe Hotelrestaurant. In der Nähe bauen wir das Innenzelt auf und schlafen mit Blick auf den Sternenhimmel ein.

Ein Besuch bei lieben Familienmitgliedern in Klosterneuburg (Österreich) Ende Februar 2018 verwandelten wir kurzerhand zu einem 4-Länder Roadtrip (Belgien, Luxemburg, Deutschland, Österreich). Im dritten Teil beschreiben wir das obere Isartal, insbesondere mit dem Sylvenstein-Stausee, der Mautstraße von Hinterriss bis Wallgau sowie unsere Rückfahrt über Fürstenfeldbruck, Stuttgart, Bad Schönborn und Luxemburg. A visit with dear family members in Klosterneuburg (Austria) at the end of February 2018 was turned into a four country road trip (Belgium, Luxemburg, Germany, Austria). In the third part we describe the upper Isar valley, especially the Sylvenstein lake and the toll road from Hinterriss to Wallgau as well as the return trip via Fürstenfeldbruck, Stuttgart, Bad Schönborn and Luxemburg.

“Goodbye Winter” Roadtrip – Teil / Part 2

Teil 3: Die frischen Brötchen der Bäckerei Büttner in Bad Tölz schmeckten und hervorragend zum Frühstück, es waren bestimmt die besten Backwaren der Reise! Nach dem üblichen Wasser ablassen und nachtanken auf dem Stellplatz fuhren wir, dem Lauf der Isar folgend, wieder Richtung Süden. Nahe der Österreichischen Grenze erreichten wir zunächst den Sylvenstein-Stausee, dessen Oberfläche, komplett zugefroren, sehr imponierend aussah. Wir machten eine kurze Wanderung auf der Staumauer. Weiter Isar-aufwärts erreichten wir den Weiler Vorderriss – von hier aus führt die einzige Straßenverbindung nach Süden zum auf österreichischer Seite liegenden Hinterriss mit der Eng-Alm ganz am Ende des Tals. Part 3: The fresh rolls of the Büttner bakery in Bad Tölz really tasted well during our breakfast, probably the best bread products we had during the whole trip! After the usual water management activities, we left the Bad Tölz camper parking and drove southwards up the valley of the river Isar. Close to the Austrian border we reached firstly the Sylvenstein lake, with its impressive, completely frozen surface. we had a short walk on its dam. Following the Isar, we then reached the hamlet of Vorderriss – this is where the only road to the Austrian hamlet of Hinterriss , with Eng-Alm at its end, is departing.

Von Vorderriss aus nahmen wir allerdings die bekannte Mautstraße, die weiter isaraufwärts in Richtung Wallgau führt. Die Befahrung der nicht geräumten Straße erfolgte auf eigene Gefahr und ohne, dass Maut tatsächlich kassiert wurde. Das Befahren der Straße ist sehr lohnenswert, der Ausblick ist beeindruckend. Leider wurde das Wetter während unserer Fahrt immer schlechter, so daß uns keine besseren Fotos vergönnt waren. Unsere interaktive Karte unten zeigt wieder die GPS-Tracks unserer Reise und die Orte, an denen unsere Fotos aufgenommen wurden. Von Wallgau aus fuhren wir an Walchensee und Kochelsee vorbei in Richtung München, wo wir nachmittags Freunde besuchten. Nevertheless, from Vorderriss we took the well known toll road leading to Wallgau, further up the river Isar. Using the road on that day was on our own risk (snow and ice were not removed) and without the need to pay the toll. Driving that road was very rewarding, the views being impressive. Unfortunately the weather during our ride was getting worse, which is why we were unable to shoot better photos. Our interactive map below as usual shows our GPS tracks and the locations where our photos were taken. From Wallgau, we passed Walchensee and Kochelsee heading towards Munich, where we met friends in the afternoon.

Am Abend fuhren wir zunächst zum Wohnmobilstellplatz an der Münchner Allianz-Arena, der uns aber überhaupt nicht zusagte. Wir fuhren deshalb weiter nach Fürstenfeldbruck, wo uns ein sehr angenehmer Stellplatz, sogar mit gut funktionierendem WLAN, erwartete. In the evening we initially headed towards the Munich camper parking at the Allianz Arena, but we did not like it at all. We therefore continued towards Fürstenfeldbruck, where a very pleasant camper parking awaited us.

Das gute Wetter, das wir in den Tagen zuvor, vor allem in den Bergen vermissten, begleitete uns auf der Rückfahrt. Von Fürstenfeldbruck aus ging es weiter nach Stuttgart, wo wir nachmittags am dortigen bekannten Fernsehturm einen weiteren Freund des gepflegten Allradreisens zum Kaffee trafen. The good weather we missed during the days before, especially in the mountains, now accompanied us on the return trip. From Fürstenfeldbruck we drove to Stuttgart, where we met another friend of 4WD travelling at the well known TV tower for a coffee.

Zur Übernachtung wählten wir den uns bereits bekannten Stellplatz in Bad Schönborn.  Ein gut bewirtschafteter Platz, leider hat man aber bei Spätankunft keine Möglichkeit, das vorhandene WLAN zu nutzen, da man dafür im Büro (schließt um 17:00 Uhr) Zugangsdaten generieren lassen muss. For the night we chose to use again the camper park in Bad Schönborn. A well managed facility, unfortunately, when arriving late there is no way to get access to the free WLAN as this requires credentials to be generated in the office, which closes at 5 p.m. .

Am nächsten Tag reisten wir nach kurzem Aufenthalt in Heidelberg weiter zurück Richtung Belgien und verbrachten die letzte Nacht der Reise auf dem Stellplatz des Campingplatzes Fuussekaul in Luxemburg. Ein Top-Platz, leider auch hier mit Schwierigkeiten beim Internet-Zugang. Neben dem Platz befindet sich eine Tankstelle mit den für Luxemburg typischen traumhaft günstigen Kraftstoffpreisen. Am folgenden Tag, kurz vor der Rückkehr nach Belgien, besuchten wir noch den Staudamm in Esch sur Sure. The next day, we continued towards Belgium after a short stay in Heidelberg. We spent the night in Luxemburg on camping site Fuussekaul. A great facility, but unfortunately also having issues with its WLAN. Right next to the site there is a fuel station with the great fuel prices typical for Luxemburg. The next morning we quickly visited the dam of Esch su Sure.

Damit kam die letzte Reise des Winters 2017/2018 zu Ende und wir präsentieren hier garantiert unsere letzten Schneebilder der Saison – dies sei nur deshalb gesagt, da zum Zeitpunkt der Veröffentlichung dieses Berichts im deutschen Rheinland schon Temperaturen von ca. 30°C herrschen und kaum noch jemand in Winterstimmung ist! That was the end of our last trip in winter 2017/2018. We guarantee that these were the last snow photos of the season – we mention that because at the moment of publishing this article, the temeratures in German Rheinland have already reached approx. 30°C and it’s getting time for spring travel reports!
