welcome to the second challenge: greaser girl week!

the theme

the theme for this is focusing on works involving the canonical greaser girls (and women, as this extends to the parents!) from s. e. hinton's works. the challenge is to write about them, with a minimum of 2k words within the set time frame.

rules for works

as stated, these challenges are meant for all of s. e. hinton's books, tim hunter's adaptation of tex and the two coppola films. characters and plots from the television show and the musical aren't applicable. you can do crossovers with hinton canons for this as well! (ie: you can cross over tex and hawkes harbor but you cannot submit a work involving any musical or television version of canon or any characters found solely in those canons.)

you can submit works involving OCs, but OCs cannot be the sole main focus. ie, you can submit a work involving a Sylvia/OFC but you can't submit a work that only involves the OFC without any canon greaser girl present or prominent in the work.

this challenge is also only for participants who are 18+. i will vet everyone who wants to participate; that's why it's semi-public. if you're underage, you will not be allowed to participate and i reserve the right to deny participation if harassment or bad behavior occurs.

entries must hit the minimum for 2,000 total words since this is character focused. when i say that, i mean if you want to write three separate one shots, all three would have to add up to 2k or more in word count. or if you wanted to do drabbles or longer pieces, they still need to hit the 2k minimum total when they're submitted. you aren't obligated to write one whole piece that is 2k — all you need to do is get there whether it's over one work submitted or multiple.

yes, you may submit multiple works! just please submit them and then post them during the week of posting.

as stated elsewhere, your works will not be policed. that means that if someone writes a ship or tackles are more controversial subject or has a rating higher than T/PG-13, your works are fine and allowed. the only thing that is required is that you tag appropriately and rate appropriately on AO3 and you treat fellow people who are involved respectfully.

do not post your works until posting week! i understand you might get antsy, but please wait until submission week.

timeframe

signup open june 10th, 2025 and close june 19th, 2025. all i require for sign up is your tumblr url, your ao3 user, the idea you have and the greaser girl you intend to focus on. that's it. once you sign up, you can more or less begin to write unless i have a follow up question/clarification.

mid-way check in. since this is a shorter we'll have a check in around june 24th to see how things are going. this is going to be a tumblr post with responses, and maybe shooting a message.

challenge close date and posting week. fics are to be posted starting at july 1st, and will go on until the 8th. i'll be posting and promoting them, adding them to the ao3 collection if you haven't done yourself (please make sure your account is open for collections!). please feel free to comment others, give encouragement and engage.

"You were dreaming this morning, weren't you?" Dallas clears his throat as they pull out of the drive way and into the street. He still doesn't look happy as he taps at the wheel with a gloved hand. "I could tell — you were saying something about a Jerry."

Some of the tension is gone from the morning. Ponyboy doesn't know if it's because Helen talked to him before or if maybe he talked to Two-Bit or because Ponyboy had been gentle with him. He doesn't mind it as they go through the cold, dark streets.

Philly is different from the Panhandle: it's bigger, older and at the same time more imposing as they travel through. The snowfall alone is a marvel to Ponyboy, never quite used to the huge drifts that permeate the landscape.

"Jerry Wood, yeah," Ponyboy checks his lap for any errant crumbs from breakfast. It's still so early that the oppressive dark is still out, suffocating even some of the starlight they normally could get. The lights from the car illuminate things well, Dallas emanating warmth beside him. He uses his right hand to grasp Ponyboy's thighs, the palm against his leg anchoring him down. "He was there at the hospital, when Johnny died. He was one of the school teachers of those kids we rescued."

how to submit a work to collections

for the @hintonchallenge, when posting week starts you'll have to post to AO3's collections. since this is the first time and people need a refresher or don't know at all, i'm making this to show you how to use collections.

first, there is a collection generally for the challenge and one specifically for decades week. this is what it looks like on AO3:

in order to post your work to it, you'll hit new work and essentially go through it as you normally would until you get to the associations tab:

where it says POST TO COLLECTIONS/CHALLENGES you need to click into the field. for this just type in hinton and it'll have two choices:

for this challenge, you'll select the second, decades week. once you click, it'll populate:

there are two things to note for this challenge: the collections are currently in an unrevealed status. that means if you hit submit, the work will not be shown until the works are fully revealed by the moderator. what that means is, i'll be able to see your work but no one else can until the day the challenge goes live. once the day goes live, i'll be able to manually approve it, which means the works then go public and subscribers will get emails etc etc. i'm not sure if the date will update, but if it doesn't you can always forward date it if you decide to submit early rather than wait til posting week.

once you do that, you just hit post! if you have any questions you can just come to the inbox or comment this post.

these are the results so far with a pretty clear winner. i'm gonna keep it open, though i don't suspect i'll have that many more responses.

i will say that i think i'm going to run events where there's a theme month that has the minimum of 3k and then character focused weeks where the minimum is knocked down to 2k. i want to keep this fair and open to all writers in the fandom, and i think lowering it for character weeks would allow some people to jump in a little more easily. i do think character weeks will run on a slightly shorter cycle vs the theme months (since that's pretty much the length here) since the word count is shorter.

so for instance, the greaser girl challenge is for characters, would probably run for two to three weeks with a 2k word minimum vs. the next theme challenge (likely a job themed one!) would be run for a full month cycle, but at a minimum 3k word minimum.

with that said i'm opening a general feedback form here. i know i have an ask box but some people are shy and i'm always game to hear ideas pitched or other suggestions as i want to keep running this challenge for hinton fanodm.

It is genuinely so hard to write from the pov of canonical cheaters, regardless of the situation or explaination, I literally cannot wrap my mind around the rational of why anyone would do that. (In the most literal sense possible)

That being said, I am now done with both Sandy and Sylvia's stories for Greaser Girl week, and I am actually very happy with how they both turned out. They don't feel too out of character IMO and neither stories are hateful or doting on either character. Which is what I was going for.

Now just Angela (my bby) and Evie (the only charactization I have of her is wet cardboard RN) left :D

Hintonchallenge Greaser Girls week is looking good on my end already, working on a few characters I haven't even considered working with and just gave some glorious depth to Sylvia I wouldn't have considered at all before. :)

thanks to everyone who participated. every work was beautiful and i'm really happy everyone could write what they wanted and have fun. particularly as this is the first time running this, everyone was great. (and if you're wondering why it's posting now, had an entry delayed to do some issues and i waited until things were smoothed out). i've wanted to run something like this for years so i'm basically over the moon at this. 🩷

THE DECADES WEEK CHALLENGE IS CLOSED. thank you everyone who participated in this challenge! it came up to a total of seven works from five authors that totales up to 69,383 words. the fandoms most written was for the outsiders followed by that was then, this is now.

what is this?

this is basically a writing challenge where a prompt or theme is selected by the moderator and participants write to said theme. the themes usually have a minimum word count of 3k and once challenges are completed, they will be posted onto an ao3 collection. the goal here is to do things that are more out of the box for fandom, and to stretch a little more.

this is also something created to cater to fans who prefer the novels and movies over the musical. the fandom has changed recently, and some people would prefer a more dedicated space to things that don't involve the huge canonical changes.

how can i participate?

this challenge in semi-public, meaning that every one who wants to participate either has to be invited by me, the moderator, or a friend. this is done to keep to the goal of it being for the general se hinton fans and not the musical, to keep it to an 18+ audience, and to make sure that no harassment can take place.

once you've been added, challenges will go up and have sign ups. sign ups are mainly checking to see that you want to participate, giving me your general idea, and then understanding when the deadlines are. after that, you're tuned loose until the mid month check in and then posting your works when posting week opens! all that's required is posting to ao3, tagging correctly, and hitting the minimum word count.

this challenge does not police content within fanworks. as long as everything is correctly warned for upon submission, do what you like.

when will the first challenge go up? when is it?

the first one will go up on the first week of may! i'm currently deciding the subject.

i have decided to make this a semi public challenge. basically: if you want to participate or have a friend you want to participate, just lmk and i will get in contact with them. mostly as anti harassment prevention and because i actually do want to be semi selective. it's for all of se hinton's books and the two films only. i am not interested in engaging with the musical side of fandom at all and i want to keep it open to people who want to participate from other corners of hinton fandom.

as to what event goes first, i am torn between a decade challenge or career week first and i would love feedback.

wanting to run a fic event in hinton fandom so fucking bad and i think i could but also i know there would be some level of complaining about it not catering to musical fans and not prohibiting "darker" stuff just ugh
