Know Your Hip-Hop Pioneers: Grandmaster Flash
Tumblr media
A man whose radical skills in mixing reformed the turntable is, Grandmaster Flash. As the architect of the quick-mix theory, which is the extended play of the breakbeat, Flash's DJ sets are notorious for shaking crowds! His early days playing at house and block parties for big-time house rockers Kurtis Blow and Lovebug Starski led to his most famed act, Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five. Flash's impeccable technique for the art of djing has earned him a place in the holy triad of hip-hop.

Happy Friday and more importantly Happy 50th anniversary to hip hop
Tumblr media
Hip hop or hip-hop is a culture and art movementthat was created by African Americanspioneered from Black American street culture, also known as hip hop African American culture, that had been around for years prior to its more mainstream discovery while later reaching other groups such as Latino Americans and Caribbean Americans, starting in the Bronx, New York City. Hip Hop is one of cultural movements that has been shaped and dominated by African American males though female hip hop artists have contributed to the art form and culture as well. Hip hop culture is characterized by four key elements: rapping, DJing and turntablism, breakdancing, and graffiti. Other elements include historical knowledge of the movement, beatboxing, street entrepreneurship, hip hop language, and hip hop fashion. Some of these are argued to be the “fifth element”.
The Bronx hip hop scene emerged in August 1973 when brother–sister duo DJ Kool Herc and Cindy Campbell hosted the first hip hop party in the Bronx, sparking the rise of the genre. Hip hop culture has spread to both urban and suburban communities throughout the United States and subsequently the world. These elements were adapted and developed considerably, particularly as the art forms spread to new continents and merged with local styles in the 1990s and subsequent decades. Even as the movement continues to expand globally and explore myriad styles and art forms, including hip hop theater and hip hop film, the four foundational elements provide coherence and a strong foundation for hip hop culture.
Hip hop is simultaneously a new and old phenomenon; the importance of sampling tracks, beats, and basslines from old records to the art form means that much of the culture has revolved around the idea of updating classic recordings, attitudes, and experiences for modern audiences. Sampling older culture and reusing it in a new context or a new format is called "flipping" in hip hop culture. Hip hop music follows in the footsteps of earlier African-American-rooted and Latino musical genres such as blues, jazz, rag-time, funk, salsa, and disco to become one of the most practiced genres worldwide.
Today let’s take a moment to celebrate the iconic legends and groups who made the genre so important as well to look at the next generation of rappers

It's giving hip-hop royalty! 👸🏽
Here's a long list of queens in Ladies First: A Story of Women in Hip-Hop, now playing on Netflix.
Today’s the fiftieth anniversary of hip hop, and with all due respect to the male emcee of past, present and future, let’s give the ladies their flowers too.
if there’s a Mount Rushmore for female rappers, which four would be on there

God I KNEW this was gonna happen. If you're excited about fob returning to a more punk/emo sound that's wonderful but if you knock their rnb/blues/electronic/hip hop influenced sound in that excitement then you fundamentally misunderstood the message of mania and need to take a look at why you view those genres and that sound as "pedestrian" and of lesser value.

Know Your Hip-Hop Pioneers: DJ Jazzy Joyce
Tumblr media
In the early stages of hip-hop, the art of DJing was dominated by men. DJ Jazzy Joyce is among the first batch of well-known female disc jockeys in the culture of hip-hop. She was actually the voice of the 1984 Tommy Boy Records hit by G.L.O.B.E & Whiz Kid, "Play That Beat Mr. DJ". Jazzy is best recognized for rockin' the funky beat on Sweet Tee's 1986 single, "It's My Beat". As her cuts embraced Digable Planet's "9th Wonder", DJ Jazzy Joyce is globally respected as an idol of the art of DJing.

...FLY AT PIONEER CHICKEN WHEN THEY'RE WAY OUT WEST -- L.A. STYLE.
PIC(S) INFO: Spotlight on the former Pioneer Chicken location on Hollywood & Western Blvd. in East Hollywood, Los Angeles, CA, and American hip-hop group, the BEASTIE BOYS, photographed right in front of it, c. 1988-'89? 📸: Ricky Powell (✝).
PIONEER MINI-OVERVIEW: "Pioneer Chicken (or Pioneer Take Out, as it is officially named), was a Southern California fried chicken chain once heavily endorsed by O.J. Simpson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, that boasted hundreds of locations in their heyday. Founded in Echo Park, Los Angeles in 1961 by H.R. Kaufman, he grew Pioneer Chicken with heavy franchising, though their signature recipes probably did most of the heavy lifting, all with their mascot, Pioneer Pete, driving the chow wagon high above each location. When Kaufman sold the chain in 1987, there were 270 stores operated by 220 franchisees."

Every week in June, CBS News Detroit is highlighting a different part of Detroit's Black music scene and showcasing the role that Detroit played in shaping generations of performers and its impact on broader American culture.
This week, Amyre Makupson, our Executive Producer Impacting Communities, sits down with Detroit hip-hop pioneers Slum Village.
Slum Village is known for their lyricism and underground sound. Today, the group is all about keeping their legacy alive.
T3 is the sole remaining original member.
Slum Village has had many members throughout its 20 years. Before it was Slum Village, it was known as Ssenepod - dopeness spelled backward - and the group consisted of Dilla, T3, Que D, Baatin and Wajeed. After Ssenepod broke up, then came Slum Village in 1996, formed by J Dilla, Baatin and T3.
In 1998, they landed their first record deal with Barak/AM Records. From there, they released albums such as "Fan-Tas-Tic (Vol. 1)" and "Fantastic (Vol. 2)."
When J Dilla left the group in 2001 to focus on his solo career, Elzhi stepped in and became a part of popular albums such as "Trinity (Past, Present and Future)" and "Detroit Dell (A Taste of Detroit)," which included the hit single "Selfish" and featured Kanye West and John Legend.
Today, T3 is joined by producer Young RJ., who joined the lineup in 2012 after producing for the group since 2001. J Dilla died in 2006 of cardiac arrest, and Baatin, who left in 2003 and rejoined in 2008, died in 2009.
With two decades' worth of music behind them, Slum Village considers its albums influential to the younger generation today.
The group was recently named one of Billboard's 50 Greatest Rap Groups of All Time. Slum Village is releasing a new shoe collaboration with Puma in summer 2023 and is currently shooting a self-produced docuseries.
