The Gen Z contrived “alternative” fashion of aestheticism, unlike previous generations, comes from an empty, soulless, and disingenuous place and is ultimately a product of capitalism.
Aestheticism, by definition, is “beauty for beauty’s sake”, which means whoever named the Gen Z fashion knew what they were getting at because the definition means it’s beauty void of substance.
Previous generations’ alternative fashions originally came from a means of self-expression and rebellion based on certain ideas and subverted fashion norms that didn’t follow the ideals put forth in fashion depictions. It was always an act of rebellion in one form or another and alternative clothing wasn’t originally available to the masses until the fashion industry came in to mass produce alternative fashion. Beatniks, hippies, punk, grunge, goth, emo, hipsters, etc.
The fashions that come from so-called “aestheticism” are void of true inner-to-outer self-expression and are supported and implemented by capitalism through social media. It’s a soulless form of fashion that only seeks to look “cool” just to look “cool”, nothing else. There’s no rebellion in Aestheticism. It is contrived entirely by the fashion industry from within the fashion industry, especially in China, that also cherry picked other previous alternative fashions to make into Frankenstein fashions by cutting out originality and getting straight to the mass production phase.
Something created by the fashion industry can’t be considered true alternative fashion.
I actually don’t think Gen Z understands what the original point of any alternative fashion is meant to be because of this.
What are the implications when it comes to capitalism and the fashion industry, especially when China is involved?
