hobie brown ★ general headcanons
Tumblr media
content/warnings: mentions of drinking, mentions of violence, implied abandonment (?), depictions of fictional dystopian govt + police
a/n: it's about time innit 😭😭😭 a couple little thoughts about the guy that has taken over my brain for the past 6 months give it up for spider punk ‼️ very much inspired by @qiupachups's hcs go check em out here
Hobie tends to code-switch a lot depending on who he's around. At the Spider-society, he tones his accent down so people can understand him, but speaks in his natural accent around the mandem & people he likes (e.g. Miles 😁) He's the menace EVER though so he dials the Cockney up to 100 when he's fighting cops outside of the East End because they don't understand it 💀
Even though his handwriting is... atrocious, it's actually because he's picked up the style of ransom notes. In his universe, any sort of communication can be intercepted, so it's better that he can't be identified by his handwriting. That's why it's always changing, and he's half-decent at forgery too.
Speaking of writing, he can do a bunch of pen tricks. It's almost annoying how good he is at it, and if you were to ask him how, he'd just shrug. He's just that guy, you know?
His universe's Aunt May is a lovely lady from the West Indies and she runs F.E.A.S.T in Camden. They're not actually related, but he'll always see her as his aunt. She definitely helped him out after a rough patch in his life, and he volunteers often at the shelter. Everyone there has just accepted the 7ft punk walking around a couple days a week giving out breakfast and coffee.
Hobie is also bizarrely resourceful. He has a LOT of plants in his boat, and some of them grow vegetables! He knows all about gardening and makes the best preserves and soups. It's a good time to be at F.E.A.S.T when Hobie comes in with his little cloth bag full of veggie goodness.
About the rest of his family, Hobie's parents... He doesn't even know who they are himself, to be honest — not like he wants to. However, he does have siblings and a few close cousins. They're all separated, but Hobie does his best to find them. He's the oldest of them all (so far, at least?) and though they don't see him much like a brother at first, he makes sure they're taken care of, regardless of how much younger they are than him. They're always running around F.E.A.S.T, so on the days where Hobie isn't there, he can be sure that Aunt May has a few little helpers (though they're quickly growing taller than her...)
Good with animals. Even the ones that seem a bit rabid warm up to him after a little while. He knows when to leave them alone, when to give them attention, what to feed them, etc. That's why it's not unusual to see them following him around, and a bunch of kittens at his feet eating while he eats his own lunch.
Not actually a big drinker. I like to think he only has a couple of drinks or is just an insane heavyweight because there's no way he's gonna be dismantling the dictatorship if he's piss drunk. There's been a couple times where he's knackered after a night out, though. Just another reason to hate mornings, it looks like.
Most of the stickers on his guitar are from different shows and rallies he's been to, and/or organised, but only a few out of the hundreds he's been to (there's only so much space on a guitar, after all.) It's almost like a little look through his life since he joined the punk scene. Besides, who wouldn't want to beat your local government-made villain over the head with a picture of a cartoon dog?
Absolutely, utterly, undeniably terrible at singing — or is he? Not exactly. He can hum just fine, so singing should be a piece of cake, right? He's alright at a few songs, but "happy birthday" isn't exactly something you'd be performing at the Royal Opera House (he does anyway, but that's a story for another day. Fisk's 56th birthday goes just swimmingly with Spider-Punk on the front of the news.)
Despite that, he's not particularly fond of being known as "Spider-Punk". His Spider identity isn't really meant to be identified, despite how loud his whole get-up is. He's got a lot of people depending on him, and he's careful to never leave a trace of his real identity. That also means, however, that pretty much every punk in the area has a target on their back — let's just say Hobie's got a little "BEATING UP BLUE BOTTLES 101" on a Saturday morning for all his punk friends.
Since the government's got little recording devices and cameras everywhere, Hobie's taken it upon himself to... "borrow" them. He's got a couple mates good with tech, so he's on the scene pretty fast with his own crime-tracking network — pretty sick.
In fact, Hobie's friends (in his universe and others) are pretty useful for more than a few things. For pretty much every situation, he "knows a guy", whether that's related to tech, music, clothing, art, putting together a bunch of random stolen parts to make a dimension watch...

Sorry for the random asks, I just get random thoughts.
If the Wobbly Hearts AU Ninja were in a band AU who would be doing/playing what?
-froginninjago
bro ur asks are fun so this works out HGLKSJDF
Okay, i had to think a bit hard on this one but here we go
Jay - Lead Guitar: Bro has some wild speed which would be dope for shredding amazing for finger picking, this, ofc, is in reference to his elemental power of lightning. I'd think he can play several different types of guitars ranging from a standard electric to the banjo. He also likes to be front and centre a lot of the time and absolutely thrives off of attention so guitar solos would really give him a chance to shine. I imagine he'd play with a speed similar to this guy though likely not with that type of guitar
Kai - Bass guitar/backup vocalist: I'd actually give Kai the bass cause it's criminally underrated (like kai in the show it feels like sometimes) and it kinda lends itself to the fact his character ends up being more of a supporting role (specifically to Lloyd in the show) in the background rather than the main protagonist. He's extremely skilled in a way that not a lot of people notice, an avid bass defender and hype man and only slightly annoyed that Jay has more fans than him. He likely posts lots of bass shredding vids online
Cole - Drums: I mean come on you had to have seen this coming. I know it almost feels basic to put him but it fits so WELL. He's the one who keeps the team on track in the show and on beat in the band. He's so steady and consistent that it kinda blends together and you forget he's there sometimes. He's the one band member who can go out in public and not a single person will recognize him and he's cool with that. He has an amazing voice and could easily be a lead singer but he's content where he is. He's wildly skilled on the drums and I imagine people would start taking notice in him when he has like a drum solo that happens and its kinda like how Jay is crazy on the guitar he'd be outrageous like this dude
Lloyd - Lead Vocals/drums: Lloyd's currently learning drums from Cole and he's having a lot of fun with them. (a nod to my hc of Cole teaching Lloyd how to lead in the show.) He has the best voice out of the group with an INSANE range in his vocals. He can go from more like straight up angelic sounding to like hardcore screaming and so he's pretty versatile. (A nod to his oni/dragon sides.) He doesn't enjoy singing as much as he does drumming but he's good at it so he doesn't mind being the lead. Though he's not a huge fan of his fans. They're a little crazy. If you want to see him smile ask him to play the drums for you, he gets really winded and is always grinning with his hair a complete mess afterwards. He gets a lot of dopamine from da drums. He also enjoys helping Nya out with writing their lyrics
Nya - Stage Manager(previous)/Backup Guitarist/Second Lead Vocal/Songwriter: Nya is pretty versatile in what she can do. She knows the basics of base, is a pretty solid contender for lead guitar, she's also learning drums from Cole alongside Lloyd. She used to handle the behind the scenes stuff at some point before she actually joined the band. Her ability to both carve out her own place and easily fill in for the other's if they need to tap out lends itself to her element power of water something something. I kinda think of Walk Off the Earth with their two lead vocalists and how their voices blend together really well and the harmonies are really nice for how Nya and Lloyd would sound together. She also has a huge hand in writing the bands songs obviously. Kai did a lot of the lyrics for a while but he's not the most creative person. The whole band kinda has a hand in writing and its a group effort but Nya's usually the one leading it
Pixal - Stage Manager (current): I'm thinking Pixal used to be like, a solo act for a while or something? I dunno I actually couldn't get many ideas for her. But a soloist songwriter and maybe singer and she eventually retired from that and runs things behind the scenes for the band, booking stuff, getting transport, she's great at her job and the whole band loves and appreciates her, Kai regularly dramatically falls across her lap to ask "What would we do without you?" when she hands him a juice box after a set. She also handles the technology (with some assistance from Nya and sometimes Zane) and any more digital sounds they want added to their music
Zane - oh screw it, it's gotta be violin doesn't it??: come on just listen to his Falcon Chase song what else would he play??? All his songs in this show are literally strings!!! Cello, viola, violin, fiddle. i imagine he's classically trained in a lot of the bow + stringed instruments. I'm thinking Lindsey Stirling type playing probably or something. It lends itself to his controlled but emotional?? way of dealing with stuff? You can get a wide range of emotion from these types of instruments and he knows how to pull at your heartstrings (get it cause strings instrument--[gets hit with a chair])
Am i well versed enough in music to know if all these instruments would work well together? No, no i am not. But the concepts are cool and I guess i can be a lil silly goofy with it

TBOSAS SPOILERS!
I am gonna start by saying that I went into this movie knowing it would not follow the book scene for scene, character for character, and so on. This is not my first book-to-movie adaptation (obviously) so I knew what to expect, time constraints have to be met, of course. That being said, under the cut will be my review with spoilers.
I loved that the first scene of the movie was the Dark Days, it really set the tone for Coryo's POV in my opinion. I also REALLY enjoyed that the movie was split into three parts, but I also feel like they could've done a neater transition.
I am a bit sad we didn't see him disappointed by eating boiled cabbage YET AGAIN lmao, but that is more of just a funny little tidbit I would have enjoyed. My poor Sejanus, my beloved... was treated like the stale piece of bread at the bottom of a bag that everyone throws away. In the books, he was everything that Hope represented as a reader, pointing out the cruelty of the Games, calling out the Capitol and so on... in the movie he is nothing but angry and it never shows his one-sided friendship with Coryo, how he fully trusts him, brings him food his Ma prepared, never even made any significance between how he was LITERALLY feeding Coryo some days. It erased all of his kindness just to show this pent-up rage against the Capitol. I was really looking forward to seeing Clemensia in the hospital, I am not gonna lie. The mutts in the original movies were hardly visible, it isn't really translated that the ones in the first movie look like the tributes, I wanted to see just this one person being a mutt and show the absolute HORROR of what it actually is. I am not even talking about anything CRAZY, just some scales prosthetics and contacts to show how the snakes changed her. It felt very lazy. The cut to Lucy just having a guitar randomly was fucking wild lmfao, like I understand that scene would've been too much of a filler, but it is never even hinted at that Coryo tried to get the guitar. Dr.Gaul was amazing, ngl I did truly love Viola as her. The games themselves were so rushed though? Like, they really wiped everyone out with the snakes lmfao, that was so stupid to me? All of the scenes in D12 were just... so rushed. It seemed like there was no training or anything and he just was out there doing this job randomly as a peacekeeper, like dude did nothing else lmao. Idk, as someone who really enjoyed the book, when I thought I wouldn't, the movie was very lackluster. Not even showing how awful Snow really is by literally living with Sejanus' parents after literally being the reason he was killed is INSANE. Like, I really thought it would capture WHY he became this villain but it's more like... he is mad because his girlfriend left :( idk, it was very lackluster. It has been a few months since I last read the book, I might reread it and update this review in a reblog but.... so many scenes were cut, so many details that while yes were inner monologue in the book could have been some how portrayed in the movie but it wasn't. idk how this movie has such a high rating lmao, it by far the worst one imo.
If you are curious of my THG film ranking I would say from best to worst is MJ 1, CF, MJ 2, THG, and then TBOSAS... like this shit was mediocre at best. If you haven't read the book, then great, you will probably love it. But idk... it was lacking SO much.
I have other thoughts, but I am running on little to no sleep so I cannot think properly, I might add more at another time, but yeah. Mostly I am just upset at the lack of character for Sejanus. Nothing about his death or anything was as heartbreaking as it was in the book.

not me having band!au thoughts about Eddie, Steve, & Rob on this fine Wednesday morning...
blurb under the cut
eddie only joined steve and rob's pet project because they begged him to. I'm thinking Chicago, early aughts - rob, nance, and steve are in college, eddie works at their local record shop and begrudgingly lets them hang a flyer for band auditions (a singer and rhythm guitarist particularly).
like, steve can play guitar and carry and tune but the man just loves his drums, okay? let's just take a minute to appreciate hot n' sweaty Steve in shorts and a backwards baseball hat, absolutely no shirt just goin' feral on the drums. rob is on the bass and it drives Nance absolutely insane, like that's my hot gf!? i'm sweatin'
so, eddie takes pity because they're dinguses who show up to corroded's shows even though it's definitely not their usual scene and he kinda likes them, sometimes. whatever. shows up to the shitty garage of their co-op house and completely crushes the audition, obvi.
they jam for a minute, just casually like, and that's when you roll up. You've got your guitar and are a little shy, ask if this is the audition for the band.
eddie and rob definitely clock steve giving you the once over and how his voice gets all soft and sweet when he tells you that you've got the right place. So you set up and just start tuning up the guitar, maybe some open tuning with some swampy slide guitar into a bit of erruption by eddie van halen? Just a lil' amuse bouche, if you will. and then, because why the fuck not, you launch into purple rain because who doesn't love prince? the mic isn't even set up but that doesn't even matter because they can hear you loud and clear, a belter - who woulda thought?
eddie and steve have never been harder in their goddamn lives. rob can't seem to pick her jaw off the floor. nance is the only one with a functioning brain cell and asks if you'll sing something else for them.
"sure, okay. like as backing vocals or?"
steve scrambles to get you set up with the mic and stand and you ask what kind of vibe they're looking for. steve and rob mumble but you can't seem to catch what they're saying - greenday, jimmy eat world, something corporate, ramones, misfits - and then eddie rolls his eyes and cuts in with, "y'know that pop-punk emo shit?"
steve scratches the back of his neck, twirls a drumstick in his hand. doesn't wanna be the one to push you, or make you uncomfortable, but no one just half-asses purple rain, so he's pretty sure when he says, "i mean, you sound like a singer to me."
you bite your lip because you've never sung for a band before, just backing vocals and guitar mostly. but you're itching to be in another band since your last one splintered apart and they seem like decent enough people.
"i mean, i'll try." you hand your guitar off to eddie and motion for the acoustic propped against the wall behind him. you swap and get set up, strumming a bit as you tune. "if you hear me fuck this up," you say into the mic, "no you didn't."
steve and rob take a seat next to nance on the busted sofa while eddie leans against the wall behind him, arms crossed over his chest, sweetheart resting against his hips. he recognizes the chords and he is very interested in what is about to occur.
it's one of those moments that journalists will ask about for the rest of their careers.
if i should stay, i'd only be in your way (rip chris cornell, you're my fave)
by the end of the song, rob is nearly bouncing in her seat clutching nance's hand so hard while steve just smiles, all blushy and cute because he was right, of course he was, and eddie just shakes his head with a soft laugh.
"soooo." you drawl into the mic, hands flitting nervously against the strings.
steve and rob share a look before clambering off of the sofa to kneel at your feet and pull a wayne's world "we're not worthy." while eddie sidles on up to you and asks, "so, did it hurt?"
"did what hurt?"
"when you fell down the stairway to heaven?"
you sputter the most unattractive laugh, there's definitely a goosehonk in there somewhere (he mentions it every time he tells this story), and that's when they all knew.
you were it for them, they'd found the missing puzzle piece.

I play the seven-stringed guitar by the fountain in the municipal square. I use my knife and fork to slice the steak. In the cathedral, I describe the teachings of the Goddess to the believers. I reach out my right hand and leave the carriage with the help of a gentleman. I get the new dress I had been eyeing for so long, and I can’t wait to change into it. I stride forward with my four legs as I’m being chased by a child. I laugh loudly as I totter about and play with a dog…
Suddenly, we tremble. We look up into the sky and see illusory, thin lines drilling out from our bodies. They extend to an infinite height, extending beyond the grayish-white fog. They extend into an ancient palace and land in the hands of a tall figure shrouded in fog.
Oh my god, this chapter was amazing
The constant switch of POV, of different lives and emotions, but in the end... it's Klein. It's all Klein.
During this period of time, Klein’s state had always been very strange, as though he had completely transformed into thousands of lives. Every clone had their own will, thoughts, knowledge, and fate.
However, above this collective consciousness was a primary consciousness that held control. It constantly suffered all kinds of attacks, as though it could be assimilated by the sea of consciousness that had been formed autonomously at any moment. However, it eventually withstood the barrage of attacks, allowing Klein to maintain a certain level of clarity.
How mentally strong must you be to withstand the collective consciousness of around 5000 people?? Absolutely INSANE
His true body had been lying underground in Saint Arianna Cathedral. His consciousness would occasionally rise and enter Sefirah Castle, and occasionally sink into his body.
All the scenes that the marionette clones experienced constantly flashed in his mind like a dream formed from large amounts of fragments.
Holy fucking shit, I don't have the words to properly describe this chapter.
Like? No big battle, no big revelation, nothing That big, but for some reason, this chapter is so COOL!
The interesting format aside (First Person POV to properly showcase the lives, ayo), thanks to the juxtaposition of the fake lives of Klein’s marionettes and the Tarot Gathering where Klein’s primary consciousness resides, I was shook.
KLEIN IS HANDLING ALL THAT. Those incredibly diverse and complicated lives, all of them with layers and backstories. I mean, we already knew that's the ritual, but actually seeing it is insane.
I love this chapter. A lot.

HONEY REVENGE: THE EUROBEEAN TOUR
22.05.2024 @ The Deaf Institute, Manchester (250 Capacity)
Over 3 weeks late but better late than never! Honey Revenge has been my favourite band for a little while now, so seeing them live at The Deaf Institute, with another of my favourite bands, Artio, was such a special night. This concert fell right in my 2-week long break in the middle of my final exams, so it was a no-brainer. The tickets were bought as soon as they went up for sale, in my college’s library, whilst I should’ve been studying.
The band was in town for Slam Dunk on the weekend, so were playing some warm-up shows in the week across the UK. In this small tour, they weren't coming to my home city, so Manchester it was, we’ve been to quite a few shows in Manchester now, specifically this venue too. Classic Manchester, it was a very rainy day but it didn't matter to me, they're my favourite band and I was determined to see them live - Honey Revenge are the only band I'd do a 5-hour commute for (BOTH WAYS!).
The set itself was incredible as always. It always amazes me how singers can keep up such energetic vocals for entire sets, and rock singers, especially Devin, just adds to that. Accompanied by their touring band, Tay on bass & Matt on drums, it’s clear that they have fun on stage. There was even a circle pit during 'Distracted’, which I wasn't expecting AT ALL, considering their songs are pretty tame compared to other rock bands on the scene right now. But that’s what makes them stand out, it’s the kind of music that you can dance to, headbang to, and cry to, and I love them for it. Their several synchronized high-kicks over the course of their set only emphasized this. We were in a similar spot to last time, on Donny’s side of the stage so we were able to watch their insane guitar solos from RIGHT THERE in real time and it was absolutely amazing. The setlist was a little different to the last show as they didn’t play every song in their discography, with only 2 cut out though, so most songs were played.
At the time of the show, they hadn’t released anything new since the last time we’d seen them live in December, however they did play their (then unreleased) new track ‘Recipe For Disaster’ in full [see above video]. They’ve since released this song alongside the announcement of ‘Retrovision: The Extended Edition’ to be released in early August. Even though the song was only released on the 24th of May, it was still my top song of the month (🫣) - It was ON REPEAT for the whole weekend.
In between sets, we bought merch from both bands and had a chance to chat to both merch sellers for both bands as they were both friends of the band and not just a random crew member. After the show, we were also able to hi to one of the band’s team crew, and Devin’s boyfriend, Kyle who is also a musician, he was really cool and gave us some solid advice for venturing into the music industry. It was fun to meet Claire again, a photographer friend who has worked with Honey Revenge before as well as South Arcade back in March.
Once the show was over, Devin & Donny came back out to say hi to everyone whilst their crew packed down. We first chatted to Jai & Ieuan of Artio who had also come back out, but eventually we were able to talk to Honey Revenge themselves. I wasn’t able to go back in and meet them last time, due to the gig being in the upstairs of a bar and I was under 18, but to my surprise, they remembered this and were greatly appreciative of us waiting so long to meet them this time! As we were some of the last people in there, we were starting to get ushered out, but they still made sure to have a full conversation with us as we wanted to talk to them more about the scene and the industry as well as tell them what big fans we are. It was so incredible to finally meet and have a conversation with them having been a fan for so long and they also made sure to take a photo with us and sign the poster I'd bought earlier. Devin also encouraged me to talk to their sound guy as I’d mentioned that this is what I want to do after education!
This night was EVERYTHING and more. This band is without a doubt, one of the biggest, and best, newcomers to the scene in recent years. With plans to go on Idobi Radio’s Summer School Tour this July, and no doubt more plans afterwards, I can’t wait to see what the future holds for Honey Revenge.

personality/headcanons
Plays a bunch of different instruments, absolute musical prodigy. Loooves learning new stuff, it's one of his favorite things to do. Main instruments are bass guitar and keyboard though
Prefers being in the background and was always really happy to let Matt Russo (his best friend and Kafka's frontman) have the attention. They never got arena-big but anyone who's really into the music scene has usually heard of them and for sure heard Matt's name at least, especially around LA/southern California
Not so much soft spoken as just like, not a huge talker. He's more of a listener. Will get more chatty with his close friends and definitely when he's drunk, but otherwise he's not gonna say too much unless he's being engaged
Is always working on some little side project in addition to production for Bath House and also guest producing on albums for much bigger artists (he's that name where you're like why have I heard this before, and it's because he produced that one Carly Rae Jepsen/Sabrina Carpenter/Lizzie McAlpine song you were obsessed with two years ago)
His main side gig is a project called Love Sucks Sometimes with his friend Elias Kipling. It's extremely weird and experimental and they get maybe 15k streams a month on Spotify if that.
Some LSS vibe songs: X, X, X,
He's very level-headed, he's not really gonna argue with you unless it's something very important to him
Pretty much only does long term relationships, falls in love hard and takes a long time between relos when one ends because he takes it very seriously
Used to do a lot of coke back in the day when the band first started touring but hasn't been into it as much in the last 5 or 6 years, maybe dabbling occasionally. Smokes a ton of weed
brief biography
Eddie grew up in a suburban neighborhood of Jersey City in a nice house and a middle class family, the child of a financial advisor (his mom) and a high school math teacher (his dad). He's the oldest of three kids, with a sister seven years younger than him and a brother in between. Because his parents both worked, they typically put Eddie in charge of his siblings, which, especially by the time he hit high school, impeded his freedom a lot. He's the type of person that resented his parents for it and tried not to misdirect his anger at his brother and sister, but they absolutely felt the consequences of it now and then, particularly in his junior and senior years. There was a lot of unhealthy stuff between him and his parents and whenever he could, Eddie spent a lot of time at his best friend Matt's house (who would end up being the frontman of Kafka). His parents were slightly insane and very conservative, but they recognized Eddie's parenting situation as being kind of dire and were always happy to have him over. His own parents were actually crazy, and would do things like locking him out of the house if he came home after curfew and snooping through his room for drugs. He has a terrible relationship with them these days, rarely goes to visit except for holidays, and has reached a point now where he knows there's never gonna be a relationship there and has accepted it. Kafkaesque started getting attention just after he and Matt and their two other friends in the band graduated high school in 2010/11ish. They released a few EPs and then finally their debut album, Kafkaesque, in November of 2012. Two years later in 2014 they released their sophomore album, Fear In Unexpected Places, and then Mass Hallucination in 2017. They were on hiatus for four years after that, dropped their last album, Hope This Helps, in 2021, and toured it briefly as an opening act for Submergence. They've been on hiatus again since then. There are a few singles that made it onto the radio but otherwise they were always a smaller band with a relatively small but dedicated following. It was in 2022, just under two years ago now, that Eddie and another producer friend of his co-founded their own music label, Bath House. Eddie's experimental project, Love Sucks Sometimes, is signed to the label, as well as a small but growing list of other alternative/experimental artists. He mainly lives in Aurora Bay, enjoying the slower pace than Los Angeles, which he isn't crazy about, and travels when he needs to.
connection ideas
Anyone from the music industry
Also doesn't even have to be from the industry, just people he's worked on side projects/collabs with from artists who have maybe designed album art for him, other musicians, singers who featured on a single, choreographers/set designers/stylists who helped with a music video, literally anything from that world official or not
An ex or two (would have been serious long-term relationships)
Friends in general! Smoking buddies, music friends (not professionally, just other music lovers), people he met in LA/while traveling for tours, etc.
The crazy to his calm
Some kind of parental figure(s) that soothe the hole in his soul left by his actual parents
Sibling vibes, he's such an older brother but could also be cute if he experienced being the younger sibling vibe

This has been my most repeated song this week. With everything going on in the world over the last, uh, forever, scream-singing it in my car has been rather therapeutic. I've even added it to my karaoke repertoire for when I'm in A Mood and feeling kinda crunchy about it all. I put it on when I'm angry with the world and daydreaming about a hypothetical world revolution.
2) "Feed The Machine" by Poor Man's Poison
Tumblr media
More of the same. It's got very bourgeoisie vs. proletariat, anti-capitalist overlords, and anti-ologarchy vibes going on, and it speaks to my rage at the system I find myself living in. Plus, it's just a bop! It always gets stuck in my head, and it's just fun, kinda. I like the band's sound and overall vibe; everything I've listened to by them has been really great.
3) "Welcome to the Internet" by Bo Burnham
Tumblr media
So I absolutely love this song. I absolutely love this whole special, both the film and the album. I wasn't a Burnham fan before this, though I was familiar with his music/comedy and was fond of a couple of songs, but INSIDE squished my brain inside out (ha) and turned me into jello. It's one of, if not THE best musicomedy or comedy specials in my heart. Plus, The Internet/the assembled websites as a villain/s is just such a fun thing to think about, and it's inspired me to work on crafting a drag number with an unfortunately elaborate costume with 3D printed custom retractable claws.
4) "Murder at the Bingo Hall" by Amigo the Devil [live video]
Tumblr media
This absolutely fucks. The frenetic guitar, the kinda manic-touched quality of his voice as he's singing, the rather absurd and simple scene for such an energetic song to be written about - it all comes together into something insanely memorable. This video of his live performance really highlights all that for me, too. It's a super fun song, and it makes it very easy to get into his music. The drive of the guitar and his slapping accompaniment is pretty common throughout his music, and the imagery here is very descriptive without being overly heavy, which I feel is one of his great strengths throughout each song. Highly recommend!
5) "Primo Victoria" by Sabaton
Tumblr media
This is just a big "fuck you" to Nazis everywhere. Written about Operation Overload and D-Day/the storming of the beaches in 1944, it's super metal and just gets my blood racing. My steering wheel and dashboard have each taken such beatings from my not-so-air drumming! It always makes me amped up whenever I have it on. This past week had it in especially heavy rotation. It's the first track on my "No Nazis in Valhalla" playlist. Fun fact: the a capella band Van Canto made a kickass drums-and-vocals (almost a capella) cover of this song, and the singer of Sabaton, Joakim Brodén, sang the lead on this! It's stripped down by nature of the musical approach but is no less awesome!
Honorary Mentions:
6) "Automatonic Electronic Harmonics" by Steam Powered Giraffe
Tumblr media
Who doesn't love steam-punky bands? Who doesn't love androids and automatons? I love them so much! SPG is a fictional band of automatons built by a robotics engineer/scientist in attempt to win the heart of his love interest, a fellow scientist. He was unsuccessful, and he continued his research while feuding with a social and professional rival who had also been wooing his crush, and ultimately they went to war. After a long existence as weapons and soldiers, the band has since returned to their roots in entertainment as comedians, actors, and musicians.
IRL, SPG is known musically for their harmonies. A couple of their songs are less smooth in that regard but on the whole, their harmonies really show off how much of an influence and inspiration The Bee Gees have been to them as a band. Those harmonies get really elegant, emotional, and tight!
7) "The Fine Print | The Outer Worlds Song" by The Stupendium
Tumblr media
I'm a sucker for a pop-culture song, and though I haven't played The Outer Worlds, this definitely scratches that itch and has put the game on my wish list for when I get rich. But like, it's directly attacking capitalism and its predatory exploitation of the working class and even poorer people in order to further capital gains. Again, I'm not familiar with the game, but as far as I understand it, its premise is built around a work colony that people go to and then are effectively indentured to the company. The song has made me really eager to see how it's viewed in-game and what the common views are of the power dynamics there.
Some banger lines:
* "You've been trapped in that ship for an awful long time, so perhaps you have simply forgot what you signed. Oh, honestly, did you not read the colony policy that defines you as company property? That waivers your say in autonomy? The conglomerate's got you in lock and key! We put the "dollar" back into "idolatry." If you're upset, you can rent an apology. We are a family forged in bureaucracy. No 'I' in 'team', but there's 'con' in 'economy.'"
* "We work to earn the right to work to earn the right to work to earn the right to work to earn the right to work to earn the right to give ourselves the right to buy ourselves the right to live, to earn the right to die"

Hi do you take song recommendations? I might have a few.. dozen. I hope you do because I'll give them anyways.
Now you seem to be a pretty avid listener of extreme metal especially deathcore so you will probably know some of these. I tried to look through your tags so as not to recommend anything you’ve had as a song of the day but all of these likely aren’t new to you. I’ll have the bands in a random order but will try to have the songs in order of how I would rank them with the first being the best in my opinion in case you don’t want to listen to hours upon hours of recommendations from a dumbass with no knowledge on like music theory and.. stuff. I’ll hear a caveman banging sticks together and making gurgling noises and think damn that shit straight fire. So no blaming me if you spend a considerable amount of time listening to these and think “I’ve seen a truck carrying musical equipment get in a crash and it sounded better than this”, allright? Bands in blue text, songs in purple text and albums in orange, just to make this slightly less confusing.
Mental Cruelty
They pretty recently dropped a song “Hivemind” with Ov Sulfur which is a band you have featured in your song of the day (it’s a great song).
Their 2 newest albums “Zwielicht” and “A Hill to Die Upon” are great
My favorites of off Zwielicht are:
Obsessis a Daemonio
Symphony of a Dying star
Forgotten Kings
And of off A Hill to Die Upon:
Abadon
Ultima Hypocrita
King Ov Fire
Worm Shepherd
Another band you’ve featured in your songs of the day, but I don’t think you’ve featured anything off the newest album The Sleeping Sun. This is a must listen. There is not a single bad song on the album and I’ve been playing this non stop lately. Recommending this on the small chance you haven’t listened to it yet.
Lorna Shore
My all time favorite band, my all time favorite singer and my all time favorite drummer. And you’ve likely heard everything in the Will Ramos era but I feel like a lot of people haven’t heard their older stuff and It’s equally as amazing.
Will Ramos has actually covered a lot of the older songs but they are behind a paywall (monthly subscription). Although paying once gets you access to download the files. (they’re worth it)
Favorites of off Immortal (hard to choose because they are all so damn good):
This Is Hell
Death Portrait
Obsession (imo Will Ramos’ version is considerably better)
Flesh Coffin:
FVNERAL MOON
The Astral Wake of Time
Shadow of Intent
Their singer is one of the greatest in the deathcore scene.
Favorites:
The Heretic Prevails (the breakdown is insane)
The Migrant
Intensified Genocide (really catchy ending)
Vulvodynia
Favorites:
Mob Justice
Nyaope (Not about catgirls even though a Nya was promised, I know I was disappointed too)
Flesh Tailor
Signs of the swarm
Again you’ve featured Amongst The Low & Empty and it's definitely their best album imo but another one that seems to be a little less known is Vital Deprivation. Some of their best songs are on that album for example:
Tempting Death
Malevolent Enslavement
Crown of Nails
Celestial Ascendance
Brand of Sacrifice
Eclipse (Amazing breakdown)
Darkbloom
Oceano
Weaponized (Another killer breakdown)
Oceano, Carnifex - Lie To My Face (2022) (The guitar riff in the middle of the song carries hard (at like 1:24))
Nephilim (Lovely screams)
This list is getting too long so I’ll bunch up the rest
Enterprise Earth - The Failsafe Fallacy
Assemble the Chariots - The Moon Collector
Spawn of Possession - Apparition (another one of my all time favorites)
Aversions Crown - The Breeding Process
Misery Index - New Salem (Hella catchy)
Bound in Fear - Hate Circuit
Horror of Pestilence - God Given / / Hell Risen (A less known band but some really great stuff)
Beguiler, Pillars of Autumn - Requiem of a Dying World (Another one that’s less known and equally great as the previous)
I hope some of these are new to you and worthy of being added to playlists. <3
First of all I absolutely take song recommendations Second of all HOLY SHIT THAT'S A LOT OF SONG RECOMMENDATIONS
Its gonna take me quite a while to get to all of these but I'm gonna save so many of these albums and give them a listen sometime, I do want to comment on a few that I have heard but just haven't made a song of the day post out of. (I'm also just gonna keep your coloring system to make this easy to follow for anyone else reading)
That song by Mental Cruelty featuring Ov Sulfur fucking rules, I did catch that release recently and immediately put it on my heavy playlist. I have not listened to any of their stuff outside of that song though so I will definitely give those albums a listen. Worm Shepherd is a more low-key favorite of mine and you are so right, their newest album rules. I have listened to it quite a bit but haven't posted any of the songs from it yet. My personal favorite on it is the opener The Frozen Lake, Pt.II My love for Lorna Shore is no secret, but you are correct in that I have mostly listened to the WIll Ramos era. I do have a few favorites from some of their old albums when the vocalist was Tom Barber (Accumulatory Genophage and Godmaker specifically), but the majority of my listening has been with Will Ramos. My only issue with getting into the album Immortal is the vocalist. He's insanely good, don't get me wrong, he just also happens to be a gigantic piece of shit with a very long list of accusations made against him, so I don't really care to listen to any music he has worked on. If they ever released a new version with Will doing the vocals I'd be all about it, but I don't really expect that. It actually surprises me that I haven't done a Shadow of Intent song of the day because they were one of the first deathcore bands I got into alongside Lorna shore (and Brand of Sacrifice but we'll get to them.) All of those songs you listed I absolutely love, especially The heretic Prevails, but my personal favorite of theirs is Saurian King.
I had never heard of Vulvodynia but after listening to the song Mob Justice I can see how you'd like them. Its heavy as shit and I'm definitely going to need to dive more into their catalogue.
Signs of the Swarm is a band I am intently paying attention to and wanting to listen to more of after listening to their newest album Amongst The Low & Empty. I may only go so far back into their catalogue though, just due to the fact that the vocalist Lorna Shore kicked out was with them before he went to Lorna Shore, and my sentiment remains the same on that front.
Brand of Sacrifice my beloved. This band is another one of my low-key favorites. Eclipse was the song I discovered them with and it goes so fucking hard. I hadn't heard Darkbloom but after one listen its going on the playlist too. Other favorites of theirs for me are Demon King and their new single Purge. Their vocalist Kyle Anderson is one of the best in the entire industry right now despite the fact that I rarely see people put his name in that conversation. Now the only other group on this list that I have heard of is Enterprise Earth, although I hadn't heard that song before just now and it is such a banger. I don't know if you have listened to it, but they released an album this month called Death: an Anthology and I can't recommend it enough. My personal favorites being I, Divine and Casket of Rust.
To sum this up a bit though, thank you so much for all of these recommendations! I was currently doing things on my pc when I saw this ask so it gave me the perfect time to just queue up these songs and give them a listen and I am absolutely loving every one of them!
Now for anyone who actually read through all of this (I love you) and want me to check out your favorite songs, PLEASE send it to me! there is nothing more I love than talking about music, and am on the constant look out for my next obsession.

hi jade!! hope it’s not too late for my thoughts on june baby cause here they are <3 sorry i have a lot of them
first of all, bernie being the sweetest and trying to give her a dad talk 😭😭 and the junie jar!!! he’s so sweet i love him. calling eddie “her boy” and asking if he’s the one keeping her tired omg
She kisses you. It's a little drooly as baby kisses always are, but it's the best thing that's happened to you all day. It's always so surprising when she initiates affection. That she loves you just as much as you love her.
i swear junie gets a hundred times cuter every chapter!! that line, “that she loves you just as much as you love her” made me so emotional, cause i’ve been telling you in every commentary how junie is so loved and knowing that she can, in her own baby way, reciprocate it!! it’s lovely!!
EDDIE ASKING TO TALK TO JUNIE ON THE PHONE 😭😭😭
Junie’s babbling for his attention and he'd rather die than not give it to her
HES SUCH A GIRL DAD I LOVE HIM SO BAD
Your eyes flicker between him and the flowers. "I- nobody's ever got me flowers before. I don't know what I'm s'posed to do with them. I don't… have a vase."
He hadn't realised he'd be the first guy to get you flowers. It makes him wanna wrap you up and hug you, because how is it fair that a girl like you never got flowers? Not once?
I actually don’t even know how to say, just wanted to somehow highlight that part. “how is it fair that a girl like you never got flowers?” do you wanna make me cry? <3
He thinks maybe he can see the way you might've been before, in that moment. There's something so young – and you are young, as he is, as he keeps forgetting – about your face and how you take praise. You look like you want desperately to brush it away, and you look like you want him to give you more.
jade, you put into words exactly what i was trying to say in my part 2 commentary. eddie saying that he keeps forgetting how young they actually are, how there’s still this sense of youthful in their lives. It brings me back to that “I think he likes me” scene from part 2 😭
Even the flat of your forehead begs for affection. He can almost feel it from looking at you – the warmth of your skin under his lips. He can't decide whether he'd kiss you from temple to temple, or smack dab on your crown. Between your brows, at the tail of them. The corner of your eye might work. Anything would work.
ANYTHING WOULD WORK. you’re insane i love you
He's hoping, maybe one day when she's old enough to understand, he could get her behind her own guitar. He's not kidding about starting a band.
not him making plans for the future with them 😭😭😭 teaching junie how to play guitar – not his, but HER OWN 😭😭😭
The way you talk, so charming and careful, the sweetness of your newfound shyness and the rough hint of ever-present tiredness you carry, it all seeps into your singing. Eddie adores it.
and
You’re making it impossible to concentrate, looking as earnest, homespun, and ridiculously pretty as you do. Pretty in more than just your looks. The way that you watch him, the way you rub a pattern over Junie's ribs, it’s all so indicative of your heart.
i absolutely love the way you write eddie’s perception of her, how full of attention and gentle it is – to notice and appreciate the tiredness she carries, to say that the way she watches him and lovingly touches her kid is indicative of her heart. that was so heartfelt.
You'd never know he could play Master of Puppets a month after it's debut from the way he performs now.
baby you can’t bring master of puppets up. i got war vol 2 flashbacks (im joking i actually thought that mentioning that as to show how nervous he is was such a good reference)
You'd never expected that part, though of course it makes sense – sometimes she smiles and you wanna call the newspapers – and you don't think Eddie's insincere. He seems like he genuinely wants to know and that's enough for you to want to round the table and throw your arms over his shoulders.
eddie’s genuine interest in junie and how that affects her is such a beautiful thing and i could go on and on about it. but “sometimes she smiles and you wanna call the newspapers” was SUCH A LOVELY line that i had to take a break so i wouldn’t cry my eyes out
You turn to him to take him in properly. You beam, because this is an outlandish conversation and you're enjoying every second of it and he looks just as happy as you feel.
and
Your teeth click together, a funny retort squashed down by his unexpected admittance of faith. He always does this; Eddie loves to tell you the kindest things anyone has ever told you like they don't cost him a thing.
and also
His attentiveness makes your hands feel heavy in that you remember you have them, and you remember what it's like to want to hold someone else's.
jade. i love them. i love you even more for writing them like this. i’m so invested in their happiness i’d read about them forevermore
You eat your own ice cream in the seat next to them and wonder if this is forever.
in addition to my last comment, kinda hope it is 😩 no but honestly that line felt like someone ripped my heart out. so fragile. why.
Eddie wipes her chin with the side of his hand and watches her head fall. He wears a loving smile. It makes you want to cry, to know someone else loves her.
“to know someone else loves her” THATS WHAT I WAS SAYING like. eddie really loves junie. his whole weekly (not to say daily) routine changed as soon as she showed up on his porch and now he really truly loves her. i can’t imagine how relieving (i don’t think that’s the word i was looking for but that will do) it must be for her to have someone that chooses to love junie, that learns how to love them in a practical way
"I think you're the first person to see it who isn't my mom. No one ever looks at me this long,” he says quietly.
“It suits you." Something pretty hiding in plain view.
you were MEAN for writing that (i say this with so much love). that got me screaming into my pillow.
Eddie leans into it. “You wanna give me one for the next?” he asks, a short fall from salacious.
NO CAUSE I WAS GRINNING AND BLUSHING LIKE A LITTLE GIRL WHAT HAVE YOU DONE IM A GROWN WOMAN
and when his bravado slips. and it leads her to thinking that he’ll reject her and she can’t have that. so she just kisses his cheek and thinks that she would be okay if that was all she ever got. babe. that was poetic cinema. the way i could see that playing in my head.
jade, baby, i don’t think I’ll ever get tired of saying how much i really, truly love and appreciate your writing. how every little thing makes so much sense to me, every feeling, every movement, every description. you’re so talented and so smart and so, so good – i mean it in the broadest sense of the word, you’re not only such a good writer but a deeply, honestly good person and it’s something that always strikes me in every detail of your writing. i love it. and i love you!! so much!!
as always, i’m super proud of you. and i can’t wait to see what’s coming next (but please take your time, and take care of yourself, yeah?) ily!! 💌 - lu (god that was long im sorry)
sobs violently and for hours...... lu 😭😭😭 lu!
u always notice the things I'm sure no one will notice cos they're so stupid specific, but also sometimes you point things out I didn't even notice myself and make me feel so loved and AH!!! AHHH! I am really truly speechless, it means so much to me that you're still reading after all this time and that you always have such thoughtful and not to mention EXTREMELY GENEROUSLY KIND praise 😭😭 I love u forever ♥♥♥

Some of my favourite music!
Tumblr media
The Brave Little Abacus - Masked Dancers: Concern in So Many Things You Forget Where You Are
An incredible mash of Math Rock, Midwest Emo, some elements of Progressive Rock, and probably much more, I have no idea honestly. This is a hard album to classify; I had never heard anything like it before the first time I listened to it and still have not. I happened to come across this album when I was first getting into music and when I had first made a Spotify account, about January 2019. It immediately enthralled me, with vocalist Demirjian's harsh yet emotional vocals, the constantly innovative rhythms, and a sound unlike any I had heard before and did not know how to classify. I quickly found out: I would spend the next month consuming these new genres I had discovered called "Midwest Emo" and "Math Rock". I believe this album is what really gave me my jumpstart in music listening. If I had not discovered it I probably would have given up on personally looking for music and gone back to listening to whatever was on the radio or in media I consumed lol.
Eventually I found that Midwest Emo was not my absolute favourite genre, but this album has still influenced me to have a love for kickass riffs and any kind of experimental rock. Map of the Stars is the best song ever btw
Tumblr media
Deerhoof - Love-Lore
Oh boy what can I say about this. A short, mathy and noisy trip of 34 minutes, but one that will stick with you for a long time. I would not hesitate much to say that Deerhoof is my favourite band; these guys have been pumping out some of the most consistently intricate and interesting arrangements For the past couple decades, and this is them at the pinnacle of those two descriptors I think. Every track on this is great, but I have to highlight 2 and 4.
The second track is, for the most part, a smooth guitar riff backed by an arrangement I can only describe as being similar to a factory assembly line; everything falls into place as if deliberated according to calculations. Satomi's mechanical vocals add to this mood, and her sugary voice keeps it interesting. A couple minutes of waiting pays off, when the guitar explodes into a new riff packed with noise and Satomi attacks her vocals with renewed energy.
Track 4 is 19 minutes, which may be daunting but is definitely worth it. Sections of dissonant guitar plucking, simple rock made enjoyable by Satomi's cheery vocals backed by Deerhoof's characteristicly noisy guitars, and even a section of very spaced notes somewhat akin to Glenn Branca's no wave classic "Lesson No. 2".
Tumblr media
Love - Forever Changes
A 1960s Psychedelic Rock classic, but also on top of that a product of folk and classical music. This is, in my humble opinion, the best executed album ever. The instrumentation is nothing insane: vocals, acoustic guitar, drums, violins, and pretty much anything else you would find in any and every other album that those genres listed above encompass. The rhythms are not crazy either. It is the way the instruments interact with each oher that makes this album shine so much. "Alone Again Or", for example, is so dreamy, with Arthur Lee's vocals climbing up and down and doubling each other, while the violin and guitar somewhat subtly climb pitch and volume in the background until both instruments and the vocals explode for a short refrain, immediately followed by a quiet guitar solo to regather everything.
This shit really is psychedelic though, the way Arthur Lee and his army of acoustics pick you up from "Alone Again Or" and keep you enchanted all the way until the end of "You Set the Scene", which is an outright incredible closer by the way. I have listened to this album in full something well over a dozen times and it still never fails to keep me interested. I even get something new out of it everytime: truly, Forever Changes.
Tumblr media
Radiohead - OK Computer
I am not going to spend my effort adding more words to the multiple Bibles-length amount of words already written about this album dude All I will say is that it really does deserve the hype
Tumblr media
Mr. Ye - The Life of Pablo
This is simultaneously the funnest hip hop album ever and at other times the realest. It is certainly a mess to listen to but that kind of adds to the fu,n and more importantly, the worth of its themes. Something something Kanye knows he is flawed and tries to enjoy life regardless but it gets to him at times, which is very evident in the up and down nature of the album. Sound-wise there is obviously a lot of experimenting, as is characteristic of Kanye. Noise rock fans might be drawn to "Feedback".
Well, that is it I suppose. There are a couple of interesting albums I have been racking hours on recently, so this list may have some new additions. For now, I would like to list some honourable mentions:
Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation (Some of the coolest guitar tunings and transitions ever hoooollyyy this album is so raw)
Swans - Soundtracks for the Blind (This 2 hour and 21 minute behemoth is the most expansive album I have ever listened to. How the hell is an album at times no wave, musique concrete, and at One point EDM?? And it has a cohesive mood throughout the whole runtime?? Gira outdid himself.)
Bladee - Gluee (I apologize for listing a Bladee album along with these other titles but it is such a fun album LMAOOO)
Sweet Trip - Velocity: Design: Comfort. (This album really should not work. I think if it was order one track differently I would not have liked it. GG made me feel like I was having a stroke good album)
Polvo - Exploded Drawing (Avant-garde and post-hardcore goodness. "Fast Canoe" is great.)

I had a dream that I somehow put Jessie from team rocket into Mr Driller and it was hilarious. Also in the dream I found a photo of myself as a kid but there was a plushie of Susumu from Mr Driller in the background of the photo and I was questioning "where is that now??" in the dream. Even in the dream, I was absolutely sure I never owned something like that otherwise I wouldn't have questioned it mid-dream and honestly I'm not sure plushies of Susumu exist irl. If they do, they probably aren't easily affordable.
But obscure stuff like Mr Driller being the main focus of the dream is so cool. Like yesterday's main focus of the dream was Kaitou Joker. And Digimon World Ds but idk if it's near as obscure as Kaitou Joker. I mean- I never see people talking about it.
But what next? Will I dream of Monster Rancher?(please) Maybe Fossil Fighters? Either of those would be cool. Especially if Leon and Hop join me on those adventures. Then it would mix the obscure cool stuff I'm into with the characters I hyperfixate on 24/7
I think all the odd crossovers I've been dreaming about are influenced by my (work in progress) Pokemon Mystery Dungeon rom hack because in that, I'm mixing completely random stuff More about the rom hack under a keep reading
Here are a few pics of the (work in progress) rom hack. Keep in mind, sprites and portraits may not be final and some stuff is put in as placeholder until I can make sprites/portraits. Like, that Marx portrait is a sprite of Marx from one of the kirby games. And I stuck in Ingo and Emmet sprites from pokemon b/w beause I thought it would be funny during testing until I can make sprites of my own. Except the digimon sprites are from the Digimon Ds games and those will stay because I love torturing myself with nostalgia chills. Of course for digimons not in those ds games that I want in the rom hack, I will be making sprites of.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This pic is a conversation I had with my sister that she's all right with me showing because it's funny. I'm showing it because it has rom hack stuff about it. Also I think it's hilarious how good my digimon memory is compared to the rest of my memory
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Bidoof: "Now kiss"
Tumblr media
Saw this lovely job request while testing that was to rescue an absol but I couldn't do it unless I brought Emmet with me. Based absol.
Tumblr media
Also oh yes this. Dunno how, but I never cried during this scene as a kid but changing it to Raihan and Leon made me cry as a 21 year old???
Tumblr media
I suppose this looks weird to anyone but like- the rom hack is based around an au where a bored au Hop with insane amounts of magic powers accidentally created a world where everyone is counted as a pokemon and everyone can use moves and stuff. Meaning stuff like this is completely normal in this world. Casual conversations between any creature at all
Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Please be aware that the Raihan sprite is heavily considered unfinished.
Hop watching the immensely powerful au version of himself (the one I mentioned before) swing his scythe against nothing. (I was testing the animation but I think it's funny to imagine Hop is wondering if there was an invisible enemy only the au Hop could see)
Tumblr media
Here's a gif taken from testing the animation in a different dungeon. Love how innocent he looks before the strike. His scythe can transform into various things including but not limited to an electric guitar or a crossbow, though those ones won't be shown in his animations. He already has enough unique sprites. It turns into a cane here before it is revealed to be a scythe.
Tumblr media
Most things in this part of the game catch me off guard every time I test it. Memory problems don't have many upsides, but I thoroughly enjoy laughing at things I forgot I wrote. These two images aren't even the funniest moments of this part of the game
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lan Hikari from Megaman Battle Network. I'll make my own sprite eventually but as I did with Ingo and Emmet, I stuck that sprite in there as an entertaining placeholder to be extra amused while testing
Tumblr media
Last picture I'm going to show for now because the story behind it is funny. So anyhoo, I replaced the npc xatu with Volo and moved the shop xatu normally owned somewhere else and put a swingset in its place but there's a scene that happens in the base game after defeating primal dialga that goes over the town and I didn't make any edits to that part so when I got to that scene while testing, I was greeted by the sight of Volo innocently on a swing set and it caused me to practically howl with laughter so I'm abso-tootly-lootly leaving that in
Tumblr media
There is no estimate of how much time until this is playable because I get burnout very quickly and I'm not working on it all the time but I hope people will be interested in playing it by then

I got to see pierce the veil AND the used on Wednesday!!!
I waited 15 years to see the used after finding them on my dads work music hard drive from the club (that’s how I found mcr and most other shit I ended up being about when I was like, 8) and the fact that I was in the same room as Bert? Feral. Insane. Bonkers. There really aren’t words. The whole time I was thinking back to those YouTube fanfics of him and Gerard— which is hilarious bc I’m nearly 24 now. I held up a little thing on my phone that said “bert made me gay” and the man took one at it and gave me the stupidest smile and tapped his temple before pointing in my direction and laughing. He all but called me a fag then and there lmaooooo. A lot of the crowd wasn’t there for the used, which is real. Most of them were 16ish. But I was close enough to the stage that me absolutely foaming at the mouth and screaming every single word to their songs was definitely noticeable. Bert stayed very close to our end of the stage for most of the show.
And pierce the veil was surreal. I waited 12 years to see them. I remember sh’ing and crying and listening to them when my parents fought, which is wildly depressing, but that was my sense of control then. I remember staying up waiting for king for a day and a love like war to premiere. I remember drawing fanart of myself and Vic meeting at concerts like warped. I was prevalent enough in the quotev ffc that someone actually wrote a fic about Jaime and I having crushes on each other while both our bands played warped tour and there was this cute little scene where Vic and I were chatting while sitting in lawn chairs outside of our busses while drinking coronas??? He told me that Jaime had a crush on me and then in that same setting later in the fic Jaime and I had a smooch. It’s wild that it’s been so many years and these artists still have this impact on me??? I was literally sobbing during hold on til may and all of my friends were trying so hard to get him to pull me up on stage. He didn’t, but this girl Jessica did get pulled up and she was shaking and crying and he was holding her shoulder very carefully while their foreheads were pressed together and he sang to her. Then he gave her his guitar. It was almost made up feeling the way that they were all in front of me. I swooned over Tony hard.
I did take huge issue with the people that were in the crowd though. Without asking, boyfriends were moving their girlfriends in front of me or big groups of people were trying to elbow threw, as if I didn’t want to be there just as badly as I did. I got to the venue at Fuckin 1:15 and the show wasn’t until 5:30. The Fillmore was dogshit at setting up a line though and hadn’t even put out the gates or anything. So we had been waiting out on the steps just for them to fuck the line up so badly that people who got there at 5 were running and surging to the front.
I remember I had a little thing on my phone that was like “Tony toss me a pick” and my friend even caught him throwing them my direction on camera after I yelled his name just for this tiktoker to grab all of them and shove them in her pocket. It was obvious who they were meant for.
I tried rlly hard to not be annoyed by those things though, because it was such an important show for me.
I’m finally making baby key happy. I’m making my inner child happy. I’m experiencing things I never got to as a kid. I didn’t go to concerts or express myself. Now I’m becoming the person I want to be and doing the things I want to do.
Danielle was walking in and out of the venue and I wanted so badly to say hey to her and ask her about the baby but I didn’t want the crowd to notice her and swarm so I just stayed still. Anthony Tran came and took pictures of the people next to me and it was obvious they didn’t realize who he was either. So I stayed quiet. But inside I was losing my Fuckin mind.
We also accidentally parked right next to ptv’s bus??? It wasn’t like, intentional. We managed to find really good venue side parking and we kind of debated on whose bus that would even be because there were 4 of them but we didn’t linger. After the show I noticed a little crowd and I wanted to hang around but I was also trying to figure out where my friend was, so not 10 feet away from me the crowd of like 6 people walks away and I figure security told em to fuck off. Turns out Vic popped out and hung out with them for a sec. Right beside me. And I didn’t notice. But my hair is the absurdly bright red so I’m sure he saw me. I cannot bELIEVE
Anyway, it took everything in me to not buy tickets to see them in Atlanta on Tuesday just bc I am still not over this show. I am thinking about trying to see them in Texas though if money permits

(A not so small exercise in writing, in preparation for writing about the Manics and Suede concert in Philly)
The atmosphere of a place can play a huge role in one's enjoyment of a show or event. The venue I went to for the She Past Away concert was excellent for such an event. Wall decor made to resemble decaying wallpaper coupled with faux Gothic architectural elements - oh yes, I was in my element last night.
Other places I've been to have been utterly unappealing. After I found my friend Emily last night, she told me about how she's excited to hear on whether or not she's going to England for a special VTM larp event. It's going to be held in an old mansion house drenched in atmosphere.
My biggest issue when I tried VTM larp was the setting. Trying to immerse myself in this world when the real life surroundings were so utterly unappealing and decidedly not spooky or mood enhancing had a real effect on my enjoyment (Aside from the fact that I felt so absolutely ridiculous).
How am I supposed to get into the mood of being a vampire or whatever when I'm in some brightly lit suburban home with fucking live laugh love signs on the wall?
But I digress, the show was excellent, and the Abbey's atmosphere helped immensely. The first artist up was a local act called Sandman Sleeps. Spearheaded by two sisters, I greatly enjoyed their traditional guitar/bass/drums format and sort of 90s indie sound. Through the crowd I could hardly see the band, but they played their instruments well and they seem like lovely people. We're mutuals on Instagram and I had vague notions of living out my Kevin Cummins/Anton Corbijn-esque NME photographer fantasies by asking to photograph them. But I didn't.
Maybe one day.
By this point Emily had gone to grab me a drink - and being an insane lightweight - I was feeling tipsy. We talked about the slight 90s indie vibe of Sandman Sleeps and I used my opportunity to mention the Suede concert, because these days I can hardly go a minute without talking about them. She politely entertained me.
The next act was Traitrs, who I have erroneously dismissed as Cure copycats in the past. They set up their screen projector and set to work. I was surprised to find they were just two guys. They sound so much bigger. Oh, and remember what I said about atmosphere? Traitrs gets it. Their screen projections consisted of black and white images of nuns and children and a woman slowly walking down the front steps of a home seemingly in the process of destruction.
Their music feels much the same. Scenes painted in black and white. Scenes of nostalgia and sorrow. Emily turned to me and mentioned how excellent they'd been at Absolution Fest, which I passed up because I am a jaded fool.
The two of them put on a surprisingly good performance, the surprise did not come from the music but rather the members of Traitrs themselves. The two of them were very energetic from what I could see, and the crowd was extremely receptive. Spirits were high, and it almost seemed as though a portion of the crowd were there to see them and not even the headlining act.
When their set ended the crowd dispersed slightly, allowing me a chance to slip closer to the stage. A bearded man slightly to my left asked if I was there to see She Past Away (as if the black attire and heavy eyeliner - not to mention the fact that I was there at all - didn't clue him in) and attempted to impress me by saying he'd seen them down in Tampa for their first US tour (so did I) and I politely replied this was my third time seeing them. He said something in response I didn't register as shortly after that She Past Away came on stage. Much to my amusement, this man and a friend of his whooped and hollered and threw their hands up through much of the set - pointing and nodding their heads approvingly in a way I wouldn't really have expected in response to an act like She Past Away. It was very...rawk. Aside from a bit of accidental bumping into me, they left me alone, which I was very thankful for as the last thing I want to deal with at a show is strangers talking to me.
I greatly enjoyed the show, despite being a bad fan who hasn't delved very deep into their catalogue. One thing to note is that every time I see She Past Away, I can't help but feel a bit like I'm a witness to history. Living future legends of Goth. An act that in the future I can say I saw in their heyday.
If you've never listened to She Past Away, I really recommend you do so. They are truly titans of modern post-punk, which is decidedly much more synthy than the old school stuff. At times I can admittedly be a bit of a curmudgeon, in that I like showy guitars (Volkan played a lovely fender Jaguar last night) and live drums. I like rock music, okay? I admit it. A good guitar riff or solo sets my little heart aflutter.
That said, despite how synthy modern post-punk is much of the time (I have ranted about my hatred for synth claps before. Yes, old man yells at cloud moment, I know) She Past Away manage to do it in a way that is absolutely excellent. It's dripping with atmosphere (there's that word again) with Volkan's vocals sound as though he's singing from a cave overflowing with fog (which is extremely goth) and the songs feel fresh and not as though they're trying to be anything other than themselves. In fact, I imagine they've played a large part in the defining sound of modern post punk. The foundation on which so many other acts have built their work.
At one point there was a technical issue and the music stopped, the crowd began to chatter as the two of them worked to figure out what was happening. Finally, the singer from Traitrs poked his head out from the curtains at the side of the stage and produced some sort of wire contraption? I have no idea what it was, only that it seemed to help. His appearance produced massive cheers from the audience.
With a small wave the singer from Traitrs left, and the She Past Away set continued, with Volkan apologizing for the "Technical shit problem."
More cheers erupted from the audience. The rawk brothers seemed especially energized by this, yelling out how much they loved the band and how much they "Fucking rule!" - the earnestness of it was endearing. Even to a bitter old goth like myself. I hope Volkan and the other guy (I am a horrible fan who doesn't even know his name) felt the love, because they deserved it.
After the show, I returned to Emily and we linked up with mutual friends Elizabeth and Geoffrey and we chatted a little. It felt wonderful to be part of the community and last night I felt something I hadn't felt in years - the sense of joy and wonder in the scene that first drew me in to the goth subculture. In years since, I've drifted a bit due to drama and scandal, but even just that glimmer felt absolutely beautiful. It was a nice reminder of what the scene can be.
As the four of us went our separate ways I ran into my friends Patricia and her girlfriend Jessica out front. They asked if I intended on going to the local club afterwards, and I replied in the negative. I have two bulging discs in my lower back which were unfortunately troubling me and instead I drifted off back towards my car.
The night was dark but my surroundings were illuminated by the streetlights and as I wandered the brick roads past the parks where trees draped in Spanish moss cast eerie shadows, I couldn't help but reflect on the club my friends had inquired about. Based in a warehouse on the fringes of town, it's a place that is utterly lacking in charm. I mean, people play badminton there.
Where's the atmosphere?
