This one's for mr.haitch -
Do you watch anime? if yes what're your favourites? (suggestions appreciated too haha)
Yes, but selectively. Historically I inhaled Bleach, Love Hina, Tenchi Muyo, Rurouni Kenshin, Code Geass, and Outlaw Star.
I'd say my top recommendations would be Outlaw Star, Code Geass, Kotaro Lives Alone, Goblin Slayer, One Punch Man.
To Haitch: I'm sure there's others but you probably remember them better than I do.
Note from Haitch: he's watching Gintama at the minute, laughing like an idiot because it's so fucking stupid. We also regularly watch and both love The Way of the Househusband.

fun fact in gintama most of the shinsengumi members share their names with the real historical figures but with one letter changed (toushizou とうしぞう -> toushirou とうしろう isami いさみ -> isao いさお etc) but an exception to this is yamazaki who had his name completely changed from susumu to sagaru and this is cuz his name is actually a pun since susumu means to move forward while sagaru means to move backwards :p

I feel like this is something I should have realized sooner.
The 'shin' in Gintama's Shinsengumi (真選組) is the kanji 真, which means 'true' and 'real'.
Another way to read 真 is 'makoto', making it a homonym of the historical Shinsengumi's emblem, 誠 (sincerity, fidelity, honesty, integrity).
It's like two puns for the price of one.
The big acrylic stand is a prize from an Ichibankuji set, "Ichibankuji Gintama ~ Raffles are Exciting No Matter How Old You Are ~" (一番くじ 銀魂 ~いくつになってもくじはワクワクする~) (Dec, 2023)

Thoughts about Katsura
Tumblr media
Katsura is an amazing character that could’ve been even more amazing. He was always a chaotic presence in the daily life of the series, not for nothing his blood type is AB (according to him). But he has other facets. One aspect to highlight is the dichotomy of his character. He’s serious in nature but is so eccentric that he ends up being one of the funniest characters in Gintama. He’s very smart and a complete idiot at the same time. He can be extreme and measured. He’s a revolutionary.
I remember thinking that it was selfish of him to want to force Gintoki back into the Jouishishi. And he in a way he is. But then I realized that he’s probably just lonely. He lost his parental figures several times. His biological parents, his adoptive parents, his grandmother, his sensei…
That’s another matter. The relationship between Zura and Shouyou is usually not considered, other than Zura (apparently) imitating his appearance. I think this is one of the two most important aspects of his character that should’ve been explored more. At the end of the series, they’d a brief encounter, although it wasn't even in person, in which Shouyou called him his prodigy student. While it's an important acknowledgment, it's striking that this type of bond hasn't been shown before and that Shouyou never calls him by his name.
The series puts much more emphasis on Gintoki and Takasugi's feelings towards his sensei. In fact, the main reason they were fighting the war was to save Shouyou. However, while it's acknowledged that Zura was there for that reason as well, it wasn't the only one. He was more idealistic, and his goal was beyond rescue. He seeks political change in his country. Although the historical component of the series was never very developed, it presented enough elements to create a comprehensible story for the characters.
Tumblr media
It’s here that I must mention another important aspect of his character that should’ve been explored further: his political career. In the time skip Zura is shown as prime minister. However, this gets involved with Utsuro's plot, missing the character’s initial goal. Certainly, one could argue that he wasn’t seeking a political career and that it’s okay to step aside once the changes have been set in motion. But there’re a couple of things to consider.
Although Zura starts out as an extremist, part of his development is that he realizes that taking a violent path can hurt people he cares about, like Ikumatsu. This opens the way for moderation, and pursuing change through institutionalized political avenues makes sense for his character. The other point has to do with the fact that it’s absurd to step aside when social changes have not yet taken hold because because they’ll most likely be reversed.
This is why I feel that Katsura's character is great, but it could’ve been better if his bond with Shouyou had been explored more and if at the end of the series he had been allowed to grow. To become a masked vigilante on the run is to end pretty much the same way he started, without much sense.

I find it very funny when people try to analyze Gintama and its politics through its historical reference the way others do with One Piece.
Because Oda is a history buff. He loves researching history. His story is very much written not just because he likes to draw parallels but also because he writes it as such. It's not perfect but close to it in parts because he has planned his world to work with it.
Sorachi on the other hand is a pop culture buff. He loves it and he admits himself that his Shinsengumi is based just as much on the romanticized version, Moeyo ken (the 1960's novel obv, not the video game), of them as it is on their historical versions (of whom there's not actually much known).
I'm french so I personally easily relates it to someone writing about the musketeers while basing their characterization mostly on Dumas's book but who looked up the actual historical context to mix things up and add more characters to make a new story.
History in Gintama is a gimmick. It's there either for the gag, for the aesthetic or to give ideas for events. Kondo being arrested ? It's cool, it's badass and it gives pathos. It also allows characters who are enemies to become allies. That's why it was included. Not because part of it happens in History. It just means Sorachi has one less plot point to think about.
Also Sorachi clearly didn't plan ahead 'cause he just wanted to have fun and he did, keeping a loose context of status quo. Adding more Bakumatsu/Meiji Restoration references probably just allowed him to get a timeline when he started actually having to think about finishing with an actual story.
Aka History clearly influenced the story of Gintama but only loosely its history and that's why Sorachi has no problem veering from it and mixing the themes linked to it.

Character designs from 2018's Saga Prefecture x Gintama collaboration "Sagaharu Project" for Saga's Sagaprise campaign.
Sleazy producer Sakata-P promotes his dog as Saga's newest mascot. Sadaharu is wearing a mudskipper hat and a strawberry collar, sits in an Akita ware bowl, and is eating a riceball made with rice and seaweed produced in Saga. The name tag reads "Sagaharu".
There were Gintama-themed food, hot spring promos, a recording featuring Gintoki, another of Hijikata and Okita (promoting local mayonnaise and seaweed), and special regional goods. There was even a statue in front of Saga Station.
Tumblr media
Katsura, in Yayoi period dress, was of course on standby at Yoshinogari Historical Park, ready to help with the PR campaign. Will Elizabeth get a statue, too?
