25th September 1639, the first printing press in the North American Colonies is established in Cambridge Massachusetts by Elizabeth Glover, a remarkable achievement for a Puritan woman in New England. On the same day in 1690, the first multi page newspaper is published in the America’s as ‘Publick Occurrences Both Forreign and Domestick’. After one edition, the newspaper was shut down by the colonial government. The paper’s single edition was edited by Benjamin Harris, who that same year would publish the ‘New England Primer’. Also on the same day in 1791, English-born American printer William Bradford died. Joining William Penn at his new colony in 1686, he became the proprietor of Pennsylvania's first printing press, and in 1690, helped construct the first paper mill in the English colonies. In 1693, he was appointed to the position of public printer for New York, this was followed jointly by the position of public printer of New Jersey in 1702. In 1723 he was approached by Benjamin Franklin, who was interested in printing and asked him for a job. Bradford referred him to his son, who was a printer in Philadelphia. Franklin would himself by 1728, set up a printing house, becoming the publisher of ‘The Pennsylvania Gazette’. Bradford three years previously had started New York’s first newspaper the ‘New-York Gazette’. The paper would last until 1744, when James Parker, a former apprentice of Bradford’s, founded a rival newspaper the ‘Weekly Post Boy’. Parker’s paper was backed by Benjamin Franklin. Shown are reproductions of the New England Primer, displayed on plaster tiles. All letters from the primer are available on the website, in the medicine and mortality section, under art for sale. Woof! 🐾 That’s one big pup! 🐕 ‘Le Dogue de Forte Race’ which we would classify as a Mastiff today, was included in "Histoire Naturelle, Générale et Particulière, avec la Description du Cabinet du Roi. Tome Cinquième", by George Louis-Leclerc Comte de Buffon. It was drawn by Jacques De Seve and engraved on copper by C. Baquoy. It was published by L'Imprimerie Royale out of Paris in 1755. This print measures 10 x 7 1/2 inches. According to Buffon this dog is characterized as a cross breed of an English Bulldog and the largest of the French breeds at the time, a Matin. 🐶💗 To see this handsome fellow and many other original dog prints, please visit out website listed above! #dog #dogs #dogsofinstagram #dogoftheday #dogstagram #woof #dogprint #dogue #chien #chiens #mastiff #mastiffs #mastiffgram #mastifflove #mastiffsofinstagram #spotted #crossbreed #olddog #antique #antiqueprints #antiquedog #buffon #comtedebuffon #engraving #blackandwhite #historicalprints #history #interiordecor #interiordesign #gallerywallart

20th February 1838, around 8:45 PM. The bell to a cottage in Old Ford to the east of London rang violently, alerting the family, it rang again and 18 year old Jane Alsop rose to answer it, meeting a man outside standing in the lane who shouted; ‘I am a policeman, for God’s sake, bring me alight, for we have caught Spring-heeled Jack here in the lane.’ Running in for a candle, Jane returned outside, expecting to see the arrest, where upon the policeman threw back his clock to reveal he was not a policeman at all, but the demon himself….. SPRING HEELED JACK! Seizing her, he emitted a blue flame into her face, from which she was temporarily blinded, whilst her dress and hair were ripped by his taloned fingers. Screaming and managing with the aid of her sister to escape back into the house Jack disappeared back into the darkness. Jane Alsop’s ordeal was the most violent of the phantom named Spring heeled Jack, his attack on this day, was followed by other sightings and a further encounter nine days later in Green Dragon Alley in London’s docklands, who attacked Lucy Scales and her sister, by again emitting a blue flame from his mouth which temporarily blinded them, Lucy fell to the ground, and was seized with violent fits for a number of hours. Claimed to have piercing red eyes, and the ability to leap upto 25 feet into the air, from which the name Spring Heeled Jack derives. These sightings led to increasing newspaper reports which established the figure in urban legend and folklore, upon which Penny Dreadfuls, pamphlets and theatre productions were performed. Sightings of Spring Heeled Jack would continue sporadically all across England from 1838 to the last sighting in 1904. Continued in the comments. #victoriangothic #victoriangothicstyle #victoriangothic #gothicvictorian #vintagelooks #vintagelooking #historicscene #historicscenes #gothichorror #gothiclit #gothichorror #classichorror #vintagegothic #darkillustration #creepyart #creepyartwork #pennydreadful #springheeledjack #cryptozoology #cryptozoologyart #weirdhistory #strangehistory #darkhistory #historicalprints #agedpaper #victoriana #emphemera #victorianera #folklore #historicalillustration https://www.instagram.com/p/CMSUAdtHTnX/?igshid=10mqe9myr77on

How cool is this?! 💎💎💎 'Crystallography. Theory of Crystallization.' was drawn by C. Haity and engraved on copper by J. Pass. It was withdrawn from "Encyclopaedia Londinensis; or Universal Dictionary of Arts, Sciences, and Literature, Comprehending, Under One General Alphabetical Arrangement, all the Words and Substance of Every Kind of Dictionary Extant in the English Language.", by John Wilkes. It was published by J. Adlard out of London on August 20th, 1802. Such an interesting field of study! 🔬💎📖#crystallography #crystals #crystalstructure #crystallization #theory #diamonds #diamondformation #science #sciences #diagram #rareprints #crystaldiagram #antiqueprint #wallart #walldecor #vintage #antique #rarebooks #vintagediagram #vintageprints #collectors #historicalscience #historicalprints #scientific #scientificprints #detail #design #engraving #arthistory #originalprint
