Manifestation Theory Supplement - What happened to Will + the Beginning

So, what happened to Will in season one exactly? Well, I think in the first timeline that Will died. As in he was murdered. Now you might be wondering who would murder Will like that and well season one certainly stresses the existence of as a very negative force in Will’s life.

Someone who knew he had just died. Someone who knew that his death occurred at the quarry and was ruled a suicide despite supposedly being in the city. Who other than Lonnie Byers. Lonnie who showed up just in time for the money and let’s say we’re in the one, the one being the timeline where Will is alive then the other 99…

This is where it gets me. That first DnD game is so important because in the initial timeline it would’ve been the last time Mike saw Will alive and happy so it’s something like a save point. Karen stops the game at 8:15 hence the importance of that time. So, Will goes home and Lonnie kills him. I’m not sure I can decode the specifics of how, but anyway Will dies.  

I think Mike’s main power up until this point was probably time manipulation/travel. A bit like El’s telekinesis it’s the first stage of said powers. After Will’s death Mike tries to rewind the timeline and completely override the first one except, he doesn’t necessarily fail, but he doesn’t succeed either instead we get whatever in the loony tunes is going on right now and why you might ask?

Because Mike most likely damaged his brain by attempting to rewind time like that. He most likely had some semblance of control over time before hand seeing as according to Dustin-

We learn that Mike is very good with time. Then we get to see Mike always seeming to lose track of his time. Later from El we see that pushing your power to the limit can damage your brain and cause amnesia.

So let’s say Mike rewinds time to his save point which would be 8:15, the time where he could consider things would’ve gone wrong because his mom stopped the game. Mike is twelve. He would not have had the power level necessary to pull that off and most definitely would’ve pushed way past his limit.

When El pushed past her limit she opened a gate. If Mike had reached a point where he pushed past his limit trying to destroy a timeline he considers failed and given himself brain damage, it’s possible that the manifestations started then. That would’ve been the perfect time for it to begin as a sort of consequence of time travel.

El, HNL, the upside-down, the Russian subplot, and more are products of this. They keep reflecting Mike too closely to be a complete coincidence. Mike just randomly starting to create things out of the blue without rhyme or reason doesn’t make sense, however, him trying to do something else and being met with a consequence because he released a large amount of energy does.

This would be the balance. Mike’s powers aren’t going to completely evil, but they aren’t going to be completely good either. It would force Mike to reconsider his black and white view of things because surely the thing that saved Will can’t be completely evil, but the things the came after can’t be completely good either.

Mike’s relationship with time is very peculiar. He’s got curfews, he’s being told to stop his games at specific times, his watch being such an important item that it’s one of the view to be on the right hand.

Both times when Mr. Clarke is talking about parallel universes and the vale, which we later refer to as the upside-down, Mike is just randomly in frame despite not really contributing to the conversation. This is similar to what happens when Dustin narrates what the “Vale of Shadows” is.

Will having died explains why all the Will-alikes keep dying despite Will dying at the end making no sense at all. Rather it’s a way to tell us that Will died, and his death is significant to the plot. Also, Billy being referred to as another him, so the other him dying and even having a grave.

Okay so, Mike isn’t necessarily manifesting on purpose, but beings keep escaping from his subconscious and as he grows older this power grows stronger. This is why Mike is the only one who seems to be able to become fully attuned to the motivations of places such as the upside-down or HNL.

They aren’t real. They’re a part of him and the only person who’s going to understand that in all it’s capacity is going to be him. Mike is the one who will be able understand the way he thinks the best. Now I don’t think that necessarily means he’ll be kind considering how much Mike likes to beat himself up.

El says she found the source followed by a picture of a rather intense closeup to Mike.

On that note they really kept pushing the idea that Lonnie killed Will only for it to be a fake out, but Lonnie is definitely still suspicious.

Anyways not to take advantage of edward theories for the tedspiracy (i am tho) but every russian in st is an edward stand in. Like literally theyre all edward but its all ted related subtext so ppl dont catch on but. Its right there.

In the of Enzo/Dimitri its the most obvious. "Edward" literally means "wealthy *guard*". Dimitri is a prison guard. With a son named Mikhail (Michael). And a wife who Hopper calls a cheater. Not only that but his alias "Enzo"? Is a cognate of the name Henry (derived from the same name Heinrich- google will straight up tell you that Enzo is a cool exotic italian version of the English Henry to name your child. The two names have the same meaning: "home ruler").

Yuri is a doublet of George. Yuri has a daughter he buys gifts for (can anyone say hollys litebrite) and a helicopter he named after his "beautiful lover" Katinka, which you guessed it.... has the same meaning as Karen ("pure"). Again, a russian name but with the same meaning as the english counter part. He is also born in the same year as Ted which is even funnier.

And Alexei my beloved Alexei. "Defender" to Edward's "guard". So so funny that there also is a scientist named "Teddy" in HNL in s2. Nice comparison of the soviet government to HNL there.

Anyways what im saying is that the wheelers for some reason have Russian counterparts. I am also saying that hawkins is never beating the town full of lab rats actual matrix allegations if they keep on getting compared to surveillance state which was the soviet union. Insert here Ted asking if El is a russian in s1.... sir im pretty sure YOU are the russian but okay. What is your fuckign six figure job why are you being compared to a soviet scientist, guard, and smuggler. Something something russian spy fake family hysteria of the cold war. Is brenner your boss.

When Todoroki entered the broadcast room, he unintentionally smiled at the sight he saw. The trio were sleeping on the large black sofa as usual. Tsuji was in the middle, Shibaman was next to him and leaning on him, while y/n, although she looked quite small next to them, was sleeping on Tsuji's other side, leaning on his arm. The young boy sat on one of the other seats, opened his book and started reading. He didn't want to wake them up, they looked pretty cute and he was grateful for the little bit of silence he could find.

After a while, Todoroki raised his head when he heard the vibration sound of one of the phones on the table. The vibration of the phone made such a loud noise on the table that the other two woke up as well.

When Todoroki saw that the ringing phone belonged to the young girl, he saw that the heaviest sleeper in the group was still not waking up. Laughing at this, he looked at Shiba and saw that he was already reaching down on the table to mute the phone, while Tsuji was holding y/n so that she wouldn't fall.

The duo’s face, which looked very annoyed because their sleep was interrupted, made him laugh.

Tsuji “Look at this.It's her phone that's ringing, but she doesn't even wake up." While saying this, Shibaman was looking at the screen of the phone he was holding in surprise.

“Oi Shiba! Why don’t you still end the call?”

Tsuji couldn't understand what his friend was trying to do. When Todoroki frowned at the tall boy, Shibaman showed the phone screen to the other two.

“Sameoka ? Shoji Sameoka ?”

While the three of them were looking at each other, y/n woke up from her fake sleep when she heard the name, opened her eyes and got into a sitting position.

Tsuji was looking at her like asking "Weren't you sleeping?", Shiba was showing the phone with the screen off in his hand and waiting for an explanation with one eyebrow raised. Todoroki, on the other hand, was curious about the explanation the young girl would make, aware that she had been acting strangely lately.

“Can I have my phone?” Y/n asked holding out her hand and Shibaman held his hand up and y/n sighed. “I'll explain everything, just give me five minutes to call him back.”

Shibaman held out the phone and continued to hold it tightly when the young girl wanted to take it. The tall boy grinned when Y/n looked at him again. “You will talk here, turn on the speaker.”

Y/n was looking like "are you serious" but Shibaman was pretty serious. When she turned to Tsuji and saw that he was also determined, she nodded.

“Okay, but you won't make any noise.”

When the two nodded, y/n grabbed her phone and called the boy who called her again.

While the phone was answered immediately on the second ring, y/n was thinking about what to say.

“Y/n- san, hi.”

“Hello” Y/n nervously replied to the young boy. The looks of those around her did not help her at all.

"Um… I… I called for…" Shoji's voice was also quite nervous. “You told me to call you when I wanted my jacket back.”

Y/n cursed under her breath as she felt the wtf stares of those next to her. She had a lot to explain to them.

"Oh yes. I'm sorry, it's been a long time, hasn't it? If you send me a location, I can bring it to you."

Shoji apologized nervously, thinking he was being rude, when in fact he just wanted to see the young girl and continued.

“I'm actually in front of the school right now.”

Y/n laughed nervously as her eyes widened.

“Ebara, right?”

“No, Oya.”

When Shoji replied, the young girl cursed her luck again. And she answered in panic

“Sameoka-kun, you shouldn't be here. Also, I don't have your jacket with me, I have to go home and get it."

After a few seconds of silence, Shoji's voice was heard again.

“I see, your house is not far from here anyway.” Tsuji and Shibaman were listening to the two with angry looks, of course they were not angry, they just didn't want to see Shoji around their friend. They were also wondering why Shoji knew where y/n's house is…

“Then I will wait in the location that i’ll sent you, y/n-san.”

With a sigh of relief, Y/n hung up the phone, saying in a less nervous tone that she will be there. And she looked up in fear and looked at her friends’s face in the room. They all looked quite serious.

“You know you have a lot to explain, right?”

Y/n nodded slowly and sat back in the chair. She was very afraid of their reaction.

"Are you guys dating?" When Shibaman asked with a straight tone, y/n directly refused.

“What? No, of course not.”

“So do you like him?” When Tsuji asked, y/n looked at him in surprise. Why couldn't she say no to this question? Why was she afraid? The others were still waiting for her to speak as Y/n shook her head slowly. While the young girl was thinking about what to say, Todoroki spoke in a soft tone.

“You can start by telling the truth about your injuries from the other morning, y/n-chan.”

Y/n slowly nodded and started explaining everything from the beginning.

“Actually, I didn't lie about that.I just missed some details." When she offered a sweet smile, realizing it wasn't working, she continued. “That evening, a large group blocked my way. And their leaders… You know them. Those idiots you fought that first year-“

“Ryusei?” Shibaman asked confused and y/n nodded.

“They had many weapons, I took down many of them on my own, but I had reached my limit.”

Todoroki was getting angry when he thought that the young girl was attacked because of him. He was clenching his fists so tightly that turned white. Y/n smiled when she saw this

"Don't worry, I didn't lose." Although the young girl tried to lighten the mood by winking, all three of them were very serious. The young girl continued. “When I could no longer fight, I heard someone's voice. Sameoka was passing by and helped me. Later I realized that Ryusei had a knife. If it wasn't for him, they could have killed me."

“Son of a bitch!” y/n shook her head when Todoroki cursed in anger.

“I'm fine, I'm really fine. Sameoka wanted to go to the hospital, but I didn't want to worry anyone. Also, my parents would pick me up from school. So he walked with me home. I borrowed his jacket because I was cold. So it's nothing like you think."

The young girl smiled. She didn't give all the details, but that's more or less what happened.The trio was silent. Y/n wanted to say something, thinking they were angry, but she didn't know what to say. Tsuji was the first to speak,

"Why didn't you tell us?"

“I know you don't like him-“

“No, I'm not talking about that.” Tsuji protested. “Why didn't you tell us that they attacked you? You got hurt because of us-“

“Don't be ridiculous, wouldn't you do the same for me? I'm fine, really.It's over."

When Tsuji nodded, Shibaman spoke to change the subject.

“So why did you hide about Sameoka? Y/n we are your friends. Just because we don't like him won't change anything-"

"Not like that." Y/n protested. “I never forgot that day. I can't forget..." she waited silently for a few seconds and continued. “But… Sameoka is a good person. He was always nice to me, even though I was an asshole to him... I'm no better than him though."

The young girl sighed and smiled. “Even though you tell me it's okay, I feel guilty.”

When Y/n lowered her head, Tsuji sat next to the young girl again and Shiba crouched down in front of her.

“Y/n… it's okay for us. We don't like him, but we love you. If you have feelings for him-“

“I don't know,” the young girl answered Shiba. “He's honest about his feelings, but I don't know if I have feelings for him. I just don't hate him."

Tsuji laughed and patted the young girl's arm. Y/n looked at them and saw that they were all smiling reassuringly.

“Are you going home now?” Todoroki asked and y/n nodded.

“I need to get his jacket, then I'll go to the location he sent.”

Shibaman grinned when Todoroki nodded.

“We are coming too.”

“Huh?”

"We don't trust him, and it might be good to scare him a little."

Y/n rolled her eyes.

"Guys, I don't think he’ll be afraid of you-" The young girl smiled sweetly when she met Tsuji's gaze. "Yeah nevermind, let's go."

Y/n was quite nervous as she headed to the location Shoji had sent her. She didn't know what to do with the two tall boys coming right behind her and she thought she shouldn't bring them.

As much as she loved Tsuji and Shibaman, she was aware that these three wanted to punch each other every time.

When they came to the park by the lake and saw Shoji sitting on the bench, even she didn't know why she was smiling. He was wearing casual but stylish clothes as usual, his hair was braided again and he looked a little nervous.

As the trio approached the bench, the young boy turned his head when he heard footsteps. The small smile that appeared on his face when he saw the girl disappeared and he was surprised when he saw the duo behind her.

He stood up and took a few steps towards the trio.

“Y/n-san… thank you for coming.”

Y/n tried to smile, understanding the implication in the boy's voice.

“I brought your jacket, Sameoka-kun. And… they were going home too. Since we met on the road-“

“No, we came with her because we didn't trust you,” Shiba denied and y/n sighed.

Shoji was upset, thinking that the young girl did not trust him. Hadn't he proven that he would never hurt her? Was she afraid of him?

When he turned his gaze to the tall duo, Tsuji replied again with a flat tone.

“We will go, but let me warn you before we go. Y/n is very precious to us, if anything happens to her-“

Shoji answered without thinking

“She is very precious to me too. And you can be sure that I will protect her before myself.”

Even though Shoji spoke while looking at Tsuji, y/n looked at what he said and realized that he was actually speaking to her. To break the tension between them, she turned to the couple behind her and smiled.

“Tsuji and Shiba are being overprotective as usual, but they need to go home now. Right guys?

Even though the young girl was smiling, her suggestive voice was very clear. The two left with a short goodbye as they did not want to tease them any further.

Y/n turned to Shoji again and wanted to explain, afraid that he would misunderstand

“Sameoka-kun… I didn't bring them. Really… I think they're a little overprotective and like to annoy people.”

Shoji felt relieved when he learned that the young girl had not brought them. He knew that the past would not be forgotten, but he wanted to leave it behind.

“Oh, by the way. Here's your jacket. Thank you again.”

When Shoji saw the young girl carefully put his jacket into a bag, he smiled and took it from her. He pointed to the benches with what came to his mind.

“I brought snacks. Do you want to sit in the park with me for a while?

The young girl looked at the big bag on the bench and smiled.

“Like a picnic! Why not, the weather is really nice.”

Even though Shoji wanted her to accept, he thought she would refuse. That's why when the young girl accepted, he couldn't help smiling and quickly took the big bag from the bench.

Shoji had just noticed that the young girl was not wearing her school uniform. The jeans and jacket she was wearing were black, but they were not Oya's clothes. She looked quite beautiful. Shoji was already watching her with admiration, even with her face covered in blood.

When they came to the grass by the lake, the young boy spoke in panic.

“I… I forgot to take a blanket. I am sorry." Then he showed her his jacket in the bag. “I can lay this.”

Y/n giggled and shook her head.

“I'm someone who rolls on the ground, sitting on the grass won’t kill me, Sameoka.”

When Shoji saw the young girl sitting smiling, he smiled and sat next to her. He didn't know what to say. At first he asked small daily questions. But when he saw that this was even more embarrassing, he shook his head.

He asked, looking at the newly healing wounds on the young girl's face.

“Does it still hurt?”

Y/n shook her head.

“I didn't even feel it except for the first few days. But it was very hard to answer the questions of the people at school.”

Shoji nodded, opened the bag of chips and handed them to the young girl.

“I guess you didn't tell them.”

Y/n shook her head.

“Until today, no.”

When Shoji looked confused, the young girl smiled.

“When they saw that you were calling, I had to tell the truth.”

“They don't like me”

Y/n nodded. “You don't like them either.”

After a few seconds of silence, the young girl continued

“I… I have never been someone who can fit in anywhere. I've never had close friends. I was not someone who could control my anger.”

Shoji was silently listening to the young girl

“Tsuji approached me first. Tsuji and Shibaman were my first friends. Even though Todoroki didn't like me at first, he also started to become close to me later. They're less like my friends and more like the brothers I never had."

When the young girl spoke with a smile, Shoji understood once again how valuable they were to her. And they had hospitalized her beloved friends in front of her eyes...

"And you ? Do you still hate me?” When Shoji asked the question that had been on his mind for a long time, the young girl answered without thinking.

"No." Y/n's voice wasn't harsh. “I don't hate you. I didn't like you until recently, but I guess… I don't have any bad feelings towards you anymore.”

Shoji listened to the young girl in astonishment. There was a warm feeling inside his chest.

“Of course I haven't forgotten anything, but I think I've forgiven. The boys told me not to think about this incident any more, that it was okay.” Y/n smiled. “And I know you're sincere. I can feel it. Besides, I'm not much better than you.”

Shoji smiled as Y/n turned to him with a smile. He nodded. Even though he wanted to say, “No, you are much better than me,” he did not say anything.

"That's why Shoji-kun-" Shoji smiled the moment he heard his name from her lips. “I think the ice between us might thaw a little now.”

There was silence again for a while. Y/n realized that the silence was peaceful though, so she smiled and reached into the bag. She took out the plastic box inside and smiled

“ahhh, chocolate cake! I couldn't be happier today.”

Shoji was watching her again with the young girl's beautiful smile. He didn't know when he had such intense feelings for her. But Y/n fascinated him with everything about her.

"Ouch!" When the young girl suddenly took her hand away, Shoji looked at her in surprise. When he saw that her finger was bleeding, he didn't even understand what happened.

When Y/n rolled her eyes and looked at her hand, the black haired boy took out the clean handkerchief from his pocket and gently held the young girl's hand. Y/n was watching him as he slowly wrapped around her finger.

The young girl couldn't stop her heart from racing or feeling the butterflies in her stomach. When Shoji slowly raised his head and saw the young girl looking at him, he removed his hand.

"How did you do ? Did it hurt much?

Y/n shook her head silently.

“I think the plastic edge cut it while trying to open the box.”

Shoji nodded and slowly opened the box. He placed the cake in front of the young girl and handed her the fork and y/n giggled.

"Thank you."

Shoji shyly said it was okay. Y/n couldn't remember meeting someone who made her feel like a girl in a long time. Yes, her friends were more protective of her, but y/n had grown up around men. And Shoji Sameoka was making her feel things she'd never felt before.

After eating the things in the bag for a while, y/n lay down on the grass, holding her stomach. Shoji smiled at her reaction. Indeed, her appetite surprised him too.

Y/n was watching the clouds. The blue sky looked so beautiful that she couldn't help but smile.

And Shoji was watching her. He felt like he was watching a romantic movie. And he didn't want the movie to end at all.

He wanted to hold her hand, hug her, watch her sleep. He wanted to have a place in her heart. He always wanted to be there to protect her. Shoji Sameoka wanted to be with her.

"Looks pretty " Y/n turned to Shoji, referring to the sky. She could feel she is blushing when she caught the young boy watching her.

Shoji nodded without looking away.

“Yeah, looks pretty.”

late March, 1979.

Someone gets off work at Hawkins Lab and stops off at the store on their way home to buy a pack of cigarettes.

"My son drew that," the cashier volunteers, pointing to a crayon drawing taped up by the register.

They smile politely and barely glance at the drawing, but when they do, they double take.

"Your son?" they hold out their hand for the change without looking. "Quite an imagination."

"He's only eight," she beams proudly.

Lighting up a cigarette, they rush the rest of the way home to make an urgent phonecall.

"Does someone wanna tell me how some elementary school kid from town drew a picture of something Top Fucking Secret?"

By April, HNL is surveilling young William Byers, son of the Melvald's cashier. They wiretap, they film, they learn routines, they pose as school officials to monitor his academic and creative output. He may be exactly the sort of talent they scout for across the world, quite literally in their own backyard.

Acquiring a new subject is always tricky, so they can't be hasty. They need evidence that this wasn't merely a coincidence, a fluke. They watch to see if the boy exhibits any other strange behavior.

They're still waiting in September of that year, when the HNL program... hits a snag. Its focus narrows to its lone survivor and most promising subject. Funding can't be secured for any new subjects at this time, however the Byers boy still poses a potential security risk, and continues to be monitored.

He is last observed the morning of November 6, 1983, travelling on Maple Street by bicycle, on the day when finally he does do something else strange. He vanishes.

A kid going missing isn't the strangest thing that happens on November 6 - curiously, there is another major incident at the Lab the same day.

When it becomes apparent that the two events are in fact connected, damage control is necessary. If local law enforcement is allowed to continue to search for the boy, the investigation could lead back to the Lab, attracting an undesirable level of public attention.

A fake body is created with very convincing attention to detail using surveillance obtained the morning of the boy's disappearance.

With the search over, the Lab should now be at its leisure to investigate Will Byers' whereabouts on its own terms. If the boy merely dies, irretrievable, at least the security threat is neutralized; if he can be privately recovered for study, all the better.

Unfortunately not visible in those surveillance photos of a long-sleeved Will Byers on a November morning: the birthmark on his right arm.

ok I'm not entirely seriously proposing that this happened, but hear me out anyway about a few things

That fake body.

to know what Will was wearing on the day he went missing, they had to have seen him wearing it. how then, unless they were already watching him? why would the Lab be watching some random child?

Some lab kids are wild-caught, like Kali.

In order to merit being taken for the program, must they not first do something to attract the Lab's interest - display some curious behavior, some sign of potential psychic ability?

Will loves medieval fantasy.

DnD and Lord of the Rings. he's always drawing things like battles and knights and dragons and wizards. his life, his friends, but through a lens of medieval type fantasy. so when Joyce tells the story of little Will drawing a spaceship, it bothers me. a spaceship, even a whimsical one, is such a conspicuous break from Will's usual genre.

Kids draw from a variety of inspirations.

Sometimes they draw from their imagination or their feelings.

Sometimes they draw exactly what they see in reality.

And sometimes they draw what they see somewhere in between. Without really even knowing what it is they're drawing.

What if little Will saw the rainbow spaceship in his mind, but not in his imagination.

So, what am I saying, Will had a vision of a spaceship? The upside down is another planet and the demogorgon is an alien? No.

But really, no, Stranger Things isn't that genre.

So whose spaceship is it? Is Hawkins Lab building a spaceship? No. The lab's interest is in the human mind, not the space race.

I don't think there is a spaceship. But there could be something within Hawkins Lab (or somewhere similarly top secret) that a kid with a vague vision and a box of crayons might interpret as looking like a spaceship.

Just, I don't know, some kind of big metal Thing.

I'm not saying it would have been NINA or equivalent, but I'm saying there could be a Thing that could look like a spaceship out of context. In perhaps a vision, an accidental remote-view, a now-memory.

why would a Thing at Hawkins Lab have a rainbow on it? idk, it's not like they have a history of that.

Plot twists require hints.

Big reveals are no fun if there wasn't a clue in plain view the whole time. We have few flashbacks and anecdotes about Will's past, and if we're due some revelation in s5 about him either having powers or having more of a history with HNL or Henry than we thought, that is where a clue would be.

Joyce's rainbow ship story is littered with details that bother me.

Do you know what March 22nd is? It's your birthday. Your birthday. When you turned eight, I gave you that huge box of crayons. Do you remember that? It was 120 colors. And all your friends, they got you Star Wars toys, but all you wanted to do was draw with all your new colors. And you drew this big spaceship, but it wasn't from a movie. It was your spaceship. A rainbow ship is what you called it. And you must have used every color in the box. I took that with me to Melvald's and I put it up and I told everyone who came in, "My son drew this." And you were so embarrassed. But I was so proud. I was so, so proud.

Will being 8 may matter because he turned 8 in 1979. idk, of all ages to attach to this story why the one in the landmark year of 1979? his eighth would be his last birthday before the lab massacre (Sept 8, 1979). this scenario might not work with Will any older - perhaps whatever the "spaceship" was was eliminated post-massacre. or there's something to Will being the same age as El. I'll get back to you on this one

drawing with crayons on ST is so often associated with something not simply seen or imagined, but perceived in some strange way:

these aren't the only times he uses crayon, but contrast some of his noteworthy "normal imagination" drawings - Will the Wise, Zombie Boy - done in pencil instead, as are a lot of his other misc filler drawings. (when Will's fireball/cabbage drawing where crayons are prominently mentioned turns out to be a vision of season 5 I'll get back to you)

when Max draws her vision of the Creel house, she calls attention in the dialogue to Holly letting her borrow her crayons

Will lacking interest in his new Star Wars toys makes sure we know, in case we don't remember all the Will art we've seen, that he isn't especially interested in space.

Joyce even says it with this little eyeroll like "these punk ass kids think MY son is a space nerd? please. I know the Castle Byers password and it's a LOTR reference"

which is what makes this so conspicuous - why in the same breath as establishing Will isn't very interested in space stuff does she say Will drew a spaceship and emphasize that it isn't something he saw in a movie. that it came from his imagination. like.. yeah, isn't everything he draws? why was a spaceship on Will's mind if he isn't interested in space? am I wrong that we've never seen one single other drawing of space stuff among all his artwork?

finally, Joyce not only put this drawing up in public but told all her customers about it. this is the only anecdote of Will's pre-vanishing history I can think of that could suggest any adult outsiders (so potentially the Lab) taking notice of something he did.

Henry’s In A Tank: Stranger Things vs The Evil Within (2017)

So, I talked in this post and this post about Elder Brains, and today, I want to talk about The Evil Within, Ruvik, and the STEM system.

Long story short, I think that Henry is in another NINA tank somewhere, since Edward Creel is Vecna, and we don’t know where Henry is, and since Henry seems weirdly present during NINA.

Henward vs Ruben vs Ruvik and The Creels vs The Victorianos

I’m going to talk about Ruben/Ruvik in general in a little bit, but first, let’s just take a look at the initial, most obvious parallels.

Ruben/Ruvik as an adult vs Vecna/vs Burnt Henward:

That’s definitely inspired by Ruvik. Ruvik even does the same damn hand thing that Henward and El do:

Now, let’s get into Ruvik’s backstory, and then get into the story of the rest of the game and how it ties to ST, and why I think Henry’s in a NINA tank.

So, as a child, Ruvik was isolated and “weird,” but very close to his sister, and also a child prodigy. He came from the wealthy Victoriano family, with a religious father (much like Victor), and a mother that he wasn’t close to. Ruben was doing science experiments as a child, and when he was still a child he met a doctor, Dr Jimenez, who assured Ruben that he also did similar science experiments, and that it didn’t make Ruben a monster. Even just initially here, this is already extremely similar to Henry having already known Brenner (talking about “the very doctor I had hoped to escape,” recognizing Brenner immediately by his face after waking up in the lab), and we also have the “monster,” imagery that is constant with El, Brenner, and Henward.

Then, one day, Ruben and his sister were playing in a barn when some disgruntled townsfolk lit the barn on fire. His sister died saving him, and Ruben was left burnt and disfigured, much like Henward in the yellow UD.

Although Ruben survived the fire, Ruben’s father faked Ruben’s death, and led Ruben’s mother to believe that Ruben died in the fire when in reality, he was imprisoned in the basement, and then later at Beacon Mental Hospital. This is SO similar to what happened with Henry- his death was faked (and Virginia likely involved), and then Victor was led to believe that Henry was dead when in reality, he was at HNL, with the mother vs father thing swapped for Henry vs Ruben.

Ruben, much like Henward is frequently associated with spiders. During the game, the player sees a fucked up fleshflayer-esque spider version of Ruvik’s sister. It’s a common motif for him, just like it is for Henward.

When the game begins, the player plays as Sebastian Castellanos, years after the Victoriano fire/Ruvik’s disfigurement (which we’ll come back to later in the STEM system section) but you don’t need to know much about him for this analysis, just that he’s the player character.

We end up at Beacon Mental Hospital, which takes us to the next section of this analysis.

Beacon Mental Hospital vs HNL and Pennhurst

So, Pennhurst and Beacon Mental Hospital look EXTREMELY similar:

At the beginning of the game, the player/Sebastian ends up at Beacon Mental Hospital, pursuing Ruvik. As the game progresses, we learn that the characters aren’t in the real Beacon Mental Hospital at all anymore- instead, they’re part of the STEM system/the version of Beacon Mental Hospital that exists in Ruvik’s mindscape/memories, as Ruvik is part of the STEM system, and the player character is hooked up to a STEM system tank, which we'll get into later, linking their mind to Ruvik's.

The whole "not in the real Beacon Mental Hospital" thing reminds me of the fact that the area of the lab that we see during NINA is COMPLETELY different from the lab we’ve seen in other seasons, and we’ve never seen the NINA area outside of NINA, and we have two different rainbow rooms, too, and the lab and Pennhurst are paralleled all the time, both being likened to prisons, both having orderlies in white uniforms, both experimenting on their patients, etc etc.

The STEM System vs NINA vs Elder Brain Tanks

So, the STEM system is basically multiplayer NINA (although, as is the point of this analysis, I think that NINA is also multiplayer).

Now, going back to the Victoriano fire and Ruben’s disfigurement and the death of his sister and Ruben’s father faking Ruben’s death. Prior to the player character entering Beacon Mental Hospital, Ruben escaped the basement, killed his parents, and became “Ruvik,” and went to work at Beacon Mental Hospital with Dr Jimenez.

Dr Jimenez would betray Ruben, however, and teamed up with the company, MOBIUS, to have Ruben captured, restrained, and forced to become a test subject, just like Brenner kidnapping Henward forcing Henward to be a test subject at HNL.

Ruvik was the first test subject for the STEM system project, and he was hooked up to multiple machines, and his body was experimented on until there was nothing left of him except for a brain, which became part of the STEM system. Ruvik, although just a brain in the real world, had a physical form in his own mindscape, and spent decades trying to find a way to escape his imprisonment. (again, VERY similar to 001/Henward trying to find a way out of the lab.)

Before Ruvik was killed/left as just a brain, though, MOBIUS attempted to sync his brain with Leslie’s- Leslie was a quiet boy, very similar to Ruben, and Leslie reminds me a lot of both Will and El, and was also a test subject at Beacon Mental Hospital.

Ruvik and Leslie’s brains were synced in the STEM system because they had shared trauma- both had lost their families in a violent manner.

I’m staring DIRECTLY at Murray talking about “shared trauma” in ST. Murray even ties "shared trauma" to "your dad," just like the shared Brenner trauma between El and Henward.

So, I’m also staring DIRECTLY at Henward and El during NINA and syncing their brains, and the shared trauma of Brenner/growing up in the lab, especially with all the talk of “you’re like me/we’re the same/papa hurt you," and how they have shared trauma and shared memories.

Unfortunately, Leslie’s brain was unstable (much like NINA glitching for EL), and that’s what resulted in Ruben being killed/stripped down to his brain, as Ruben wanted to proceed with the use of Leslie, but MOBIUS did not.

Decades later, Ruvik somehow managed to manifest himself in the real world briefly, and committed a massacre at the real-life Beacon Mental Hospital (which is why Sebastian was at the hospital in the first place, investigating the murders). Ruvik was searching for Leslie when he committed the massacre. It reminds me a lot of a.) Henward seemingly committing the massacre to try and get El out of the lab and b.) Vecna searching for Will.

Now, let’s look at the STEM system vs NINA vs Elder Brain tanks:

And when we jump to DND and look at Elder Brain tanks, how do those work? What do they do? Well, an Elder Brain (which resides in an Elder Brain Tank) is a hivemind- it’s what controls Mindflayers. And it’s also known as a living library, which has me staring DIRECTLY at the library in ST. Elder Brain tanks are typically kept in caves beneath cities, much like the NINA bunker, but I’m also looking at the basement of the library in ST as some sort of connection, especially since the library basement specifically was brought to our attention & tied to the Creels when Robin and Nancy went down to the basement to look for newspaper information about Victor & the Creel murders.

And interestingly enough, the fleshflayer from S3 also resembles the STEM system- which makes sense, since the fleshflayer is basically a hivemind/combined minds, just like the STEM system.

Also, the STEM tanks are literal bathtubs- bathtubs that are eerily similar to the Creel tub, and need I remind you that the sensory deprivation tanks in the lab are referred to as “the bath” by Brenner and El? And the fact that the S1 episode with the NINA-shaped, round pool in the school gym that El uses as a sensory deprivation tank is called “the bathtub”?

Like, it's the SAME sort of clawfoot tub.

Mirror Imagery

So, in order to save the game in The Evil Within, you have to find a mirror, which takes to to the safe zone of Beacon Mental Hospital. Mirror imagery is constant in this game, and I'm staring DIRECTLY at Henward talking about how he held a mirror up to his family & the mirror in the rainbow room during NINA.

Music

If you’re STILL not convinced that these parallels are intentional, I want to draw your attention to a certain song that plays in Pennhurst:

Clair de Lune. This song is CONSTANT in The Evil Within (which, need I remind you, takes place in an asylum JUST like Pennhurst), it’s the main song for the game, and is always associated with mirrors (which are extremely associated with Henward in ST), and specifically, are associated with the “safe zones” in the game, which, again, are accessed via mirrors, and the whole “music is safe/saves you” thing is VERY ST4. Clair de Lune is not just a song that happens to play once in the background of The Evil Within- instead, it’s THE song for it, you absolutely cannot miss it.

Dream Imagery

So, every subject that’s connected to the STEM system has some level of subconscious, “dreamlike” influence over it, and throughout the game, the whole experience of the STEM system is described as being like a dream/nightmare, except it's alive and can kill you because you're hooked up to the STEM system. (staring at all of the nightmare imagery with Henward, and Victor's "a nightmare far worse" vs Henward waking up in the lab vs El waking up in NINA, and Victor talking about a "waking, living nightmare" vs NINA basically being a waking, living nightmare)

We also have El talking about a shared “dream circle,” with Terry vs all of the dream imagery with Henry (Dream a Little Dream of Me etc), and the circular shape of the NINA tank. I think El and Henry were both likely present during NINA/connected mentally, like a STEM system, like an Elder Brain tank, and like a dream circle.

El talks about the dream circle "repeating," JUST like the repeating scenes during NINA.

Conclusion

But yeah! Like I’ve talked about before, I won’t be surprised if Henry has been in a NINA tank this whole time, which would explain why he seems so weirdly present during NINA sometimes- because he IS present. Just like how Terry was present in the dream circle and how Ruvik is present in STEM.

the whole “will’s birthday being forgotten” thing is so funny to me bc it’s so obviously just meant to point directly at alternate timelines and screwiness around henward being “forgotten” despite the birthday being specifically stated and thus important, and despite henward being “the source” of everything going on (which… we know technically it’s all bc of brenner but he couldn’t do it without henward so… they get the blame)

adding in that it's modine's birthday so we get a push toward brenner and hnl. and having the vecna murders begin occurring. and having the date stamped in our face on the camcorder at rink-o-mania as el is being taunted in the same way we see her bullied in nina hnl. yknow, the nina where everything is weird and fake and jumbled up. and to then learn that the creel murders happen on/around this date (depending on timelines)

like, will's birthday being "forgotten" or changed isn't and has never been about will. it's always been about everything else that's tied to that day. like i said earlier, when will's birthday is mentioned in st2, it's not even the date specifically that's important in the moment. it's just setting the stage for joyce to talk about what's really important about that day and the actual memories therein

like, people talk about it being a flub or a joke or whatever but like... the date is so important elsewhere, so of course the "forgetting" is imperative and isn't just about will...

So, rambling a bit about what I've been talking about re: things that feel like copycatting between El and Henry re: TFS and the whole suicide of '61 thing...There are some things that really rattle about the whole situation, especially when we compare what we've seen of Henry to what we've seen of El with the context of ST4 and NINA.

It seems to me that TFS might be setting Henry up to have been a sort of Will-El-Mike mashup as a child. He's got the rich family and social pressures of Mike, the sensitivity of Will, and the powers/otherness of El.

Henry and El both hold the same kind of attitude re: their place in society (or lack thereof):

Which may tie in with Will's experience in Lenora: Feeling like an outcast freak based on old experiences, but being somewhat well-liked and flying under the radar at a new school.

However, Henry and El both seem willing to use their abilities to help other people, regardless:

There's hallmarks of possible gate powers for both of them, not just El:

And we even have a fake-out suicide in ST1 El:

Much like I spoke about here with Henry being 14, a freshman, in 1961 and the last Hawkins suicide, unnamed, being in 1961:

Like...we all see how this smells, right? We all see the cycles here?

However, I also want to pull in something else I talked about a while back: Inception and NINA.

If you don't know, the whole movie is about dream sharing.

Essentially: Multiplayer NINA.

What I really care about here, though, is the deepest level of dreaming: Limbo. It's sheer unmolded subconscious, and it allows you to manifest worlds and realities without limit.

Limbo is interesting to me because it spawns the Mal incident. Mal was Cobb's wife, and their foray into Limbo is what informs us about Limbo and its loss-of-reality dangers.

There are hints of Limbo everywhere in NINA.

(Never forgetting, of course, that Brenner was lying to El about Nina. Nina and her lover did reunite. Her lover had been alive the whole time.)

However, the only way to leave Limbo is by suicide.

All this to say: With each day I become more convinced that TFS isn't actually real, but might be an idealized version of what was once Henry's reality.

So no, I'm not necessarily saying that the exact suicide Hopper references was Henry, or anything like that. I'm saying TFS may be a manifestation of the way Henry wishes things had been, or an idealized version of his real memories of 1959...much like how the early stages of NINA are idealized versions of HNL (i.e. Henry looks healthy, everyone seems happy, Brenner's generally kind...and then it slowly deteriorates into Henry looking sickly-green and everyone being in danger all the time at Brenner's hands).

That would make TFS not strictly necessary for the plot of ST5, but a HUGE commentary on who Henry is or was as a person nonetheless...which would set us all up nicely for whatever twists they might have for us in ST5.

Boy was I challenged!! (I have a lot of documents of full of wips and ideas and had to go through a bunch of them to find these.) So! Without further ado:

Spark: Apparently, in all of my docs, I do not have a single use of spark!! (I don't know how that happened since hellcheer is very, like. sparky. idk)

Grow: Again, I have no uses of grow except in the already-published thrilling christmas, trembling fear, so I'll give you that.

Munson was probably enjoying wearing the fake beard, considering how Jason was nearly positive he wasn't man enough to grow his own.

Oh, and I have one use of overgrown, which I'll also give you to make up for the lack of spark. This is boring but it's from my half-finished corroded-coffin-explores-hnl oneshot called teenage wasteland:

The four of them trekked through the overgrown grass to reach the cracked parking lot that spread before the laboratory.

Clock: I do have one of these! This is from the first chapter of not what it seems to be, which is my mysterious x-files au that I've been more or less keeping secret until I have more written:

"Munson, it's--" she looked up again to squint at the clock "--four in the morning, what are you doing? Are you at the office?"

opinion on will having powers?

Absolutely!! I have always been a Will has powers truther because I think it fits his storyline the best. Why else would Vecna have been stalking him yet unwilling to kill him (S2: "not me, everyone else")? How is he so connected to the Upside Down that he can feel the mindflayer's presence even when he's not possessed? Why the blatant parallels to Henry Creel? Why is the Upside Down frozen on the day he went missing? How did HNL have the ability to make a completely accurate fake replica of his body? There's too many questions that go unanswered if he doesn't have powers.

HNL & Russia are fake

In season 1, Mike's initial DM book seems to be the only one out of all the party's to have building on it. The first time we see it during narration -> Directly after the scientist tries escape the demogorgon (HNL interior).

The second time we see it during narration -> Hopper is going to the gate in HNL (Another interior shot + they provide a close-up of the front of the book).

We see the book a few other times, but no longer is it narrated from. It then drops off the face of the Earth right when it would be unreasonable to show the interior of HNL. Mike has a different DM book at the end of the season. (I used to wonder why that happened, but they didn't play DnD in season two, and HNL was deactivated after that season. The book drops off right around the time it would become unreasonable to show the interior of HNL)

Now for Russia.

In season one, Karen asks if she's speaking "Chinese" during dinner, and the part of the Russian code representing China is a restaurant.

Mike also says the HNL exists to battle the commies and we see in flashbacks that El was actually forced to spy on them. Mike doesn't actually have a good explanation for knowing this, so he just says to "trust him."

If you're wondering why Russia look no farther than Ted Wheeler. Mr. "We're all patriots," and "she's not Russian, is she?". Besides, Mike tells us his dad is the one filling his head with these ideas when the party was in the junkyard discussing what HNL and the bad guys were trying to do.

Also, the Russian code is way too juvenile to be real. What do you mean pi. Plus, Dustin saving them with song, Lucas saving them with a long-range weapon and Mike's view of the party via their DnD classes.

Summary: The Todoroki faction was having a normal and sweet day. But Todoroki's past was determined to chase him.

Part 2

There are some moments in life. The one you never expected to come, that you couldn't react to and that you couldn't erase from your memory.

Your days, years and past pass before your eyes like a film strip. In those few seconds, you try to understand what caused this moment. When you realize how your past is chasing you, you realize that it is too late for everything.

There are some moments in life. Moments that you can never take back and never fix.

When Todoroki left the house that morning, he would never have guessed that he would experience one of these moments. He couldn't.

As the blood of the girl he loved dyed his white shirt red and she was writhing in pain in his arms, Todoroki had never wanted to return to the past so much in his life.

But some things only happen in movies.

After paying the bill at the cash register, Todoroki looked at the table where they were eating and saw that Tsuji and Shiba were trying to wake y/n.

Y/n was weird. That's what Todoroki thought from the first day he saw her. She was quite strong and intelligent, but she could be annoying at times. One of those moments was when she fell asleep and make them carry herself after eating.

Realizing that he was smiling unintentionally , he wiped the smile off his face and walked over to the table.

“O! Y/n ! Wake up. We're really going to leave you behind one day."

Tsuji was slowly shaking y/n to wake her up. Todoroki stood in front of the table shaking his head, and Shibaman grinned.

"This time it's your turn to carry her"

Tsuji sighed in disappointment and insisted on Shiba for a while. While the two were arguing, Todoroki watched the sleeping girl for a while.

How could she be so annoying and so cute at the same time? And how could someone like her steal his heart?

“Stop arguing now. I can carry her this time. Just help me get her on my back slowly"

Tsuji and Shiba looked at Todoroki for a while, then at each other in surprise. But they quickly agreed, before he giving up on volunteering for this.

Tsuji gently helped Todoroki take her on his back. Y/n sleepily wrapped her arms around the tall boy's neck and snuggled into him.

Todoroki unintentionally smiled once again. Hugging his neck, the young girl made him taste emotions he had never felt before. And he couldn't stop his heart from racing.

Tsuji and Shibaman were a little confused. They were with him for a long time. But sometimes he really acted differently.

Todoroki never showed his feelings. Even he himself was not aware of those feelings for a long time. But he was smart enough to understand what it was.

Todoroki was walking calmly while Tsuji and Shiba were arguing about an ridiculous matter.

"Not heavy. But she is annoying. I know she did it on purpose.”

When Shibaman complained, Todoroki grinned and shook his head.

"She's definitely doing it on purpose."

The three of them continued on their way with a smile. As much as Y/n pissed them off, they all knew she was a great friend. And what a difficult life she have lived. Therefore, they could tolerate her childish demeanor.

The peaceful walk ended a few minutes later when a large group of 15-20 people blocked their way. They all looked in surprise at the people who had crossed their path. Tsuji and Shiba didn't know who they were, but Todoroki knew one of them - their leader - very well.

He was a simple enemy from the past. He knew he wanted revenge. But he had not anticipated that the revenge would be so severe.

Y/n had awakened from her -fake- sleep as they stopped. She opened her eyes, looked around, and landed.

“It's been a long time, Todoroki! Do you remember me ?"

Todoroki looked at the person in front of him mockingly. He was one of his first hunts, but he remembered.

"What do you want? Aren't that many people too few for me?"

The others watched calmly. And they were sending bad looks to the crowd in front of them.

Todoroki's arrogant attitude angered the leader even more. The two of them argued for a while. But the fight started very suddenly.

They didn't know how much time had passed. But none of them knew that this simple fight would end horribly.

The fight seemed to have been won. The leader was on the ground and Todoroki was standing staring at him. Y/n glanced around. It was then that she saw the person who would ruin this whole day.

Someone was walking towards Todoroki with a small knife in his hand. He wasn't very close to him yet, so she moved towards him, thinking she could stop him. But the person with the knife unfortunately noticed her.

Y/n couldn't remember ever feeling so much pain in her life. Time had not stood still around her, but for her it was as if time had stopped. The blade that pierced her stomach gave her a sharp pain. Her body was in shock. She had no reaction. The boy who stabbed her was looking at the young girl with fear, as he did this with a sudden reflex. He drew the knife and ran away from there.

Y/n just stood there. Blood was dripping from her stomach. Shibaman was the first to notice her. He didn't realize what was happening at first when he noticed that Y/n was standing still.

“Y/n! Are you ok ?"

The young girl gently grabbed her stomach and squeezed her eyes in pain with the wound she had pressed. She felt her eyes darken as she pulled her hand away from her wound and looked at her bloody hand.

Todoroki was looking at y/n as Shiba shouted. His eyes widened in horror when he saw her hand. He couldn't think of anything at that moment. He rushed to y/n without thinking.

The young girl could not stand any longer. As her eyes slowly closed, her legs could no longer carry her. Before she fell to the ground, Todoroki grabbed her and laid her on his knee.

Tsuji and Shiba looked at the two of them in horror. Everyone in the fight froze.

“Y/n? Y/n!”

For the first time, Todoroki couldn't think rationally. He just stared at her unconscious face. For the first time, he couldn't stay calm.

He pulled the hair that had fallen from her face. He wanted to wake her. Then his eyes fell on the wound on her stomach. A dark color formed on her light-colored T-shirt. Her hand was painted red.

Todoroki didn't know what to do. If he had someone else in his arms, he would try to stop the bleeding. But he couldn't think right now.

As the crowd dispersed, Tsuji and Shiba rushed to them. They both stared at them in shock for a while in front of the two of them. Todoroki looked at the young girl's face in horror for a while. When she got no reaction and hugged her tightly and cried out, Tsuji realized that they had to do something. Both put aside their shock. Shibaman immediately called the ambulance, Tsuji crouched down and put his hand on Todoroki's shoulder.

Todoroki looked up from the girl he was hugging. His eyes were filled with fear. Tsuji knew he was in shock too.

First he gently asked him to let go of y/n. They had to stop the bleeding. But when he got no response, he shouted.

“Todoroki! You're shaking her! You will hurt her! Put her down gently, we need to stop the bleeding.”

Todoroki looked at the girl in his arms with Tsuji's voice. When he looked at Tsuji's face again, he saw him calmly nodding his head, and slowly laid the young girl down on his knees again.

Tsuji quickly took off the bandanna from his arm and handed it to him, Todoroki pressed it to that young girl's wound, and saw the young girl wince in pain.

She was neither awake nor unconscious. But she was breathing. This gave them some relief. A few minutes later, Shibaman came to them with the paramedics who had gotten out of the ambulance. Tsuji bent down and looked at Todoroki.

"They need to get her in the ambulance, we need to hurry."

Neither both had ever seen Todoroki in such a panic. He was always the solution, the one who helped them, the one who made more sense. But now he couldn't do anything.

When the paramedics slowly took y/n on the stretcher, Tsuji and Shibaman asked Todoroki to get into the ambulance. Because they were sure that if he stayed behind, he would go crazy.

After the two learned the name of the hospital, they quickly left to find a taxi. Todoroki, on the other hand, watched helplessly in the ambulance as the cables were tied to the young girl's body.

Her face was pale, her shirt was covered in blood. Her hair was messy. The only indications that she was alive were the noises and lines in the machine.

When Todoroki left the house that morning, he would never have guessed that he would experience one of these moments.

For the first time in his life, he prayed to the god he never knew existed. He begged. Todoroki had never felt so helpless, even for himself.

“Please wake up y/n, I beg you wake up. God…do something. I want something from you for the first time. Don't take her from me, I beg you."

Todoroki didn't know if God heard his voice, but he knew he wanted him to hear his voice for the first time.

which lab tunnel ends connect?

here's the opening One shows El, in the HNL basement.

"this will lead you out beyond the lab fence to the woods," he says.

and here's the Mr. Clarke opening, where he finds the scrap of El's hospital gown.

thinking maybe Will crawled into this tunnel, the cops try to follow it to see where he'd have come out the other end, and run into the HNL perimeter fence. so the Mr. Clarke opening is very much Beyond The Lab Fence In The Woods.

pairing One's dialogue (if he's telling the truth) and that scrap of hospital gown, it seems very likely that the basement opening truly does connect to Mr. Clarke's, right?

so then what is this third tunnel opening that the lab's Head Of Security takes the cops to - claiming it to be where the Mr. Clarke tunnel leads?

Hopper knew the lab was lying because of the lack of rain in the surveillance footage of the HOS opening, which suggests the tape they showed him wasn't really from the night they said.

but are they also lying to him about this even being where the Mr. Clarke tunnel leads? ifthey just don't wanna let the cops into the HNL basement where that tunnel really leads, why fake the tape? what's there to cover up if this isn't even the same tunnel?

is this a wholly unrelated tunnel? could all three Y connect?

while we're here, why does the basement have that huge pipe at all? it's definitely a larger diameter than the outdoor ends, not that that proves anything, but why does it have to be so big? is it just like how in every movie the air ducts are large enough to crawl in for plot reasons?
