8. Your Ronance Anthem
(Robin)
Ho Hey - The Lumineers
(Modernish day AU - set in 2012, when the song was released. Nancy and Robin in their early twenties, both aged over 21 so can legally drink in bars.)
Robin sitting on an uncomfortable bar stool, holding a drink, looks at Nancy.
"Can we please go? I know you wanted to stop here, but I have to go see Jonathan and talk to him about our relationship."
"No, you don't. He lied to you again. You were right to be angry. You shouldn't feel bad for yelling and breaking up with him."
"I don't know."
Robin excitedly bounced off the bar stool, trying not to give away the surprise. Nancy also got down from her stool.
Robin confidently went to the performance area and took their microphone. Nancy was shocked, Robin couldn't resist giggling.
"What are you doing?!"
"Nancy, this is for you."
Robin held the mic in one hand, then took a deep breath, before she started singing.
"I've been trying to do it right, I've been living a lonely life. I've been sleeping here instead, I've been sleeping in my bed, I've been sleeping in my bed."
Robin wanted to look at Nancy, but was too nervous so couldn't, just hoping Nancy was surprised and liked the performance.
"So show me family, all the blood that I will bleed. I don't know where I belong, I don't know where I went wrong, but I can write a song."
Robin finally looked at Nancy, feeling hopeful after seeing her smile.
Nancy's smile was contagious, Robin couldn't stop smiling while singing. Nancy hadn't heard Robin sing before, so this was a special way to confess their feelings.
"I belong with you, you belong with me, you're my sweetheart! I belong with you, you belong with me, you're my sweet."
Robin felt too hot, blushing bright red, the microphone slightly sweaty. Nancy deserved better than Jonathan, Robin wanted Nancy to know she loved her.
"I don't think you're right for him, I think of what it might've been. If we took a bus to Chinatown. I'd be standing on Canal and Bowery. She'd be standing next to me."
Nancy happily went to Robin. Robin smiled, gently swaying as she confidently took and held Nancy's hand. This moment went even better than Robin could possibly have imagined. Robin and Nancy danced together.
"I belong with you, you belong with me, you're my sweetheart. I belong with you, you belong with me, you're my sweetheart!"
Robin looks at Nancy, then at the audience applauding, after the performance.
"Thank you."
Robin awkwardly bows, still holding Nancy's hand, they leave the bar together.
When they're outside, Robin's heart was still racing, looking at Nancy.
"Robin, thank you. Your singing was amazing, you're amazing. Nobody has ever serenaded me before."
Nancy took Robin's other hand, their hands fit so perfectly in each others.
"Nancy?"
Nancy happily leaned in closer to Robin, as she stood on her toes to reach her partner's taller height.
Nancy then softly and slowly kissed Robin's lips. Robin felt like this must be a dream, not wanting this moment to end.
"I'll have to talk to Jonathan tomorrow, see if he still wants to be my friend."
"I meant what I sang, you know? I don't think you're right for him. You belong with me, you're my sweetheart."
"I know, I want to spend tonight with you."
"Me too."
