jake oettinger pregame — BUF vs DAL — 04.09.24
[as good as the good times are, that first goal, probably, is one you want back. you want ‘em all back, but let’s say it was one you wanted to come back from. and two — colorado’s come back, in these games before, so there was pressure in that third period and you guys handled it very well.] yeah, i think, uh, we’re gonna have to, you know, know how to close out games and, uh, especially on the road, those are tough. and, you know, we did a good job, stayed out of the box, and, uh, just played well defensively and, um. yeah, we’re gonna, we’re gonna have to learn to be in that position if we wanna get to where we wanna go and, uh, you know, we showed a — a great step in that direction, of being able to play with a lead in a tough environment.
[individually, are you better at it, d’you think? as you go through more of these experiences? get older?]
yeah, i think everyone could learn from that, i think, uh — yeah, like, i’ve been in that experience before, obviously, the whole team has and stuff, so it’s just about those habits and, you know, those one or two saves you need to make, you know, that can decide a game, so. um, you know, i’ve done that before in my career and feel confident i can do that going forward.
[does that feel as good as that shutout? i know shutouts are great, and they’re perfect, and — like when you do overcome whatever, it just seems like that’s every bit, as —]
yeah, i mean —
[— feather in your cap, or whatever they say.]
yeah, i mean, i didn’t think it was the worst goal i’ve ever let in in my life, so.
[no, i’m not talking about that!]
oh.
[but the fact that all of that stuff is building up, in a game, like that.]
yeah, yeah, i think like —
[you know what i mean? there was a chance, that colorado could come back.]
for sure.
[and it would become a totally different mental challenge.]
yeah. for sure, i think especially with, you know, our track record against them this year, just, um — yeah, like, it’s just the maturity of the group, and you know, obviously, you get a 5-2 lead, you can start to think, hey, take your foot off the gas, and a team like that can put two in your net pretty quick, so, yeah, just — the maturity of the group and the steps that we’ve taken to, uh, you know, be able to play with leads is, uh, is great, and you know, just — it was obviously a huge game, we knew how big that game was, and, just proud of the effort and, like, the little plays the guys made to get that job done.

Only like two of you are going to know what the fuck I'm talking about, but the Penguins had a nice little ceremony to retire Jagr's number, and they had a bunch of old players come out for it. They were naming some of the guys who were playing with him when I first started watching hockey in like 98, and they were like so and so, I don't remember, and then MATT BARNABY!!!!! He was my favorite when I first got into hockey, and he's just kind of faded into obscurity so I was like
Mike Lange was not at the ceremony at all, which is... troubling. I hope he's alright.
