Vanaf de 16e eeuw werd Nederland voortgedreven door de kracht van de wind. De zeilschepen die over de wereldzeeën op zoek gingen naar rijkdommen of de concurrerende Engelsen, Portugezen of Spanjaarden bevochten maakten er gebruik van. Op land waren het de molens die hout zaagden, graan maalden of land drooglegden. Schiedam ontwikkelde zich tot jeneverstad. Verspreid over de stad waren er vele stokerijen en daarom ook meerdere molens om grondstoffen te bewerken. Zo werd in 1793 de molen “De Walvisch” gebouwd. De molen heeft in de 228 jaar dat ze in Schiedam staat meerdere keren schade opgelopen door storm of brand. In 1996 nog brandde de molen vrijwel geheel af na kortsluiting. Gelukkig is de molen prachtig hersteld en sinds 2018 in gebruik als museummolen. Een bezoek is ook voor kinderen erg leuk. Aanrader is dit dan te combineren met het @jenevermuseumschiedam Schiedam zelf is ook een ondergewaardeerde stad. Met name langs de Korte en Lange Haven en het Westvest ademt de stad nog het roemrijke verleden. ———————— In the Dutch Golden Age the development of The Netherlands was launched by the power of the wind. Our ships sailed the seas on it, finding new wealth and fighting competitive nations like Spain, Portugal and England. On land we dried the waters and new land was gained. But the power of the wind was mostly harvested by our windmills. The city of Schiedam developed into a major brewing place. Jenever was the most important product. Across the city more than a hundred breweries were active. For the raw materials windmills were build to grind. In 1793 this windmill (De Walvisch) was build. It’s known for its height and the fact that it has been build in the water because of limitations on land. The mill has been struck by storm and fires multiple times. In 1996 the mill was heavily destroyed by a fire. It has been reconstructed since and opened in 2018 as a museum.
