highly doubt they would ever meet but I'm curious what The Hunter would write about Dewi
Dewi
A human child, the largest living creature in Hallownest. His skin is soft, but strength lurks behind his stride.
༻━━━━━━━━━━༻✧༺━━━━━━━━━━༺
Legends tell of immense godly creatures who strode through clouds and walked across the plane in times of old. Perhaps such fantastical stories are not as unthinkable as they once were...

....
A strange mountainous creature. Though he seeks the thrill of the hunt, he does not close in for the kill. Us mere bugs seem to be easy prey. To be truly hunted by a creature so vast is a bewitching thought.
༻━━━━━━━━━━༻✧༺━━━━━━━━━━༺
I absolutely love The Hunter, so of course he'd make a visit to see the beast everyone in Hallownest has been whispering about (and when I say everyone I mean like 10 people).
#Here is your food you ravenous hyenas :)#I love reading the Hunter's journals. They're informative but he adds a fun spin to them. Belfly mask
________________
Thin wings hide a highly volatile belly. Will give its own life to protect its territory.

____________________________________
An angry creature with no regard for its own life. A creature without fear... can it truly be called "prey"?

Hey everyone, apologies for the poor quality of this mask today, I injured myself quite badly while working on it as well as using a different more difficult species of wood (English oak) to work with, this made me rather sloppy with completion as I am unable to use my left thumb, I hope everyone enjoys though

The bugs in Hallownest that are infected are usually not even dead, just asleep. I dreamnail a random bug and it said "I can't...wake up..."

Another one said "I am not...dead..."

Some will say things like "Fear!" or "Stay away from me!" and "You want to...hurt me?"

which means they know damn well what is going to happen.
The infection is like sleep paralysis, and you are the demon.
#Nice#Hollow Knight#Hollow Knight Spoilers#Anyways this is also in the Hunter's Journal somewhere saying that the bugs fell into a deep slumber and couldn't wake up#Then they started to change

hollow knight hunter's journal my beloved
Am I the only person who really likes video game bestiaries?
They make it so that all the enemies you fight have at least tiny shreds of lore associated with them; they turn the endless procession of fodder mobs from basic-gameplay-loop contrivances into notional parts of a world where stuff is going on, and they provide springboards for imagination and daydreaming. A couple of sentences can turn a collection of palette-swapped pixels with an annoying attack pattern into something that sticks in your thoughts.
I miss bestiaries.

Hollow Knight game design so awesome actually. You can get maps but you have to separately purchase a quill to actually record your exploration progress. The bestiary needs to be given to you by some guy who's so obsessed with hunting that he's named The Hunter and the bestiary is named The Hunter's Journal. You have to collect the ability to view your completion percentage. A key piece of lore is locked behind the hardest platforming section in the game and it's literally just two characters making eye contact

this is super rambly and something that's been lurking in my mind a while and ive probably mentioned elsewhere, but im thinking about hollow knight again so here you go
i am almost certain that the Knight writes half of the bestiary. im not sure where this lands on the headcanon-theory spectrum, but this is something im almost certain about.
when were first given the hunters journal, he tells us that the text may be difficult to understand, but as we learn our understanding grows. there are, as i interpret it, 3 aspects of the journal: enemy names, initial thoughts, and hunter's thoughts.
the enemy names and initial thoughts are entered into the journal the first time you kill an enemy. these are more general observations and thoughts. sometimes they have little bits of lore, like follies and mistakes ("once a highly intelligent bug, deformed by misuse of soul") but generally theyre simple things
once youve killed enough of an emeny, you decipher the hunter's notes. these are pretty unfiltered, and in some cases, like bosses, not directly about the particular enemy itself. sometimes its his musings on what the infection is. these are very explicitly the hunter's thoughts and opinions, sometimes strategies on how to kill things you have by definition already killed enough of to develop your own strategies. we know theyre from the hunter because own his lil 6-eyes mark on them.
occasionally, some entries will have notes from the hunter, like dream warriors, which are quotes from the bosses themselves. other entries that aren't from the hunter are the grimm troupe notes, which are something like poetic mission statements about the purpose of the troupe, or in NKG's case, a quote from the seer of all people.
now, why do i think that the Knight wrote part of the journal? as established, i know that the hunter wrote the third part of most of the notes, and the knight never writes them. what im suggesting is that the knight named and wrote the first part of the entry for journal.
i first thought of this when coming to the sibling's entry, which the Hunter obviously did not name. his part of the finished entry doesn't even mention them, just the possibility of life existing that far into the kingdom. he says that "If so, I will hunt it." no mention of succeeding in that goal or even finding any other shades throughout hallownest.
the other entry that kinda stands out is, of course, hornet's. the first observation just states that shes a protector, who wields a needle and thread. the hunter's aspect refers to her weapon as a "flying stinger" and I'm not entirely certain if that is the hunter making a mistake about hornet's weapon or him being poetic, as he sometimes is. either way the discrepancy caught my eye
last one ill mention explicitly is the collector, which hunters note says "I've never seen it clearly so I have no idea what type of creature it is." which, to me, proves that the Knight has to have been the one to write the first half of the notes, which talk about the Collector preserving grubs and living in its tower.
something could be said about the knight only writing entries for enemies the hunter has never seen, but i think the tone of voice in the writing between each part is so different, with the first half being short sentences that summarize how the enemy attacks, its anatomy, or its place in the hierarchy of hallownest, whereas the hunter has longer sentences and talks about himself or his own relationship to the enemy (generally how he prefers to eat them).
all of this to say that i think were really missing out on a possible characterization of the Knight in the hunter's journal. this lil guy named the loodle. and the hwurmp. and the boofly. it calls the mossy vagabonds lazy, and the pilflips odd creatures. it calls ogrim gallant, and seems annoyed by zote. it also seems to notice a lot of the hierarchy in hallownest (like maggots and all the deepnest and hive entries). and it seems pretty well read, which i think is pretty neat. there just seems to be a lot there.

The Knight (from Hollow Knight) will ocassionally post pictures of landscapes and of the people it's met since it considers both to be nice and worth sharing. And yes that does include Quirrel's sword... All met with thums up.
discord server for silent video game protagonists
#I saw this and immediately began thinking of ways to put “The whole point is that it's empty and unfeeling”- the character into this.#I think I did it right#Posting pictures of nice things and nonchalantly posting pictures of those you've met in between is probably as affectionate as you can mak#it without breaking character.#Also it totally replies to Samus' entries with photos of the hunter's journal#hollow knight#hk knight#hk ghost#favorite+

One of the things I appreciate about Hollow Knight is the subtle distinctions in the design of each area of the map, and the way that those differences have such an impact on the moment-to-moment feel of being in those places.
What particularly resonates with me is the shades of difference between the three remotest major regions of the map: Deepnest, the Ancient Basin, and Kingdom's Edge. All three share an overall hostile and unsettling feeling, but their respective airs of menace manifest in different ways:
Deepnest wants you dead. Its tunnels are dark, mazelike, and claustrophobic, and when you're in them you're being hunted. Dirtcarvers attack from the ground, Little Weavers attack from the sky. You can't trust the floor to hold beneath your feet. You can't trust a corpse to stay dead. You can't trust your own reflection. Deepnest wants to back you into a corner and eat you and it will not let you forget it.
The Ancient Basin is dead. Airless, nearly empty, nearly silent. In most of the region, the only life you will see is Shadow Creepers, slow and mindless creatures that (per the Hunter's Journal) have never been known to eat or drink. If you dig deep enough you can find the vestiges of life – a lighthouse long abandoned, the vast emptiness where a palace once stood – but even these are few and far between. If the Ancient Basin were to blink into nonexistence, who but you would ever notice?
Kingdom's Edge does not care whether you live or die. Everything in this region is primal and inexorable. It's carved out of irregular cliff faces and yawning chasms over pits of acid. The Hoppers march incessantly forward, turning around occasionally but never stopping or changing their behavior; the Colosseum is equally perpetual, a continuous baying for blood that dumps its corpses ceaselessly into the pits below. Kingdom's Edge will not attack you, but nor will it protect you. Faced with the onslaught of Aspids and Belflies and stalactites, you can carve out a space (as Oro did), or you can get overwhelmed and succumb (as Markoth did). Either way – whether you live or you die – it's your own fault.
The experiences of being in each of these places is totally different. But all three give me that skin-crawling curiosity of "I'm not supposed to be here, but I can't look away."
#hollow knight#this idea has been bouncing around my head for a while but i think this is the first time i've finally expressed it all in writing

Name: Menderbug
Debut: Hollow Knight
It is Friday the 13th... how frightful! Like, what if you see a ladder or a cat? Would that be scary or what? Jeepers. This post, though, is about something lucky! A lovely little guy who, if the odds are in the favor, you may get to witness for yourself!
Hollow Knight has destructible decorative setpieces out the wazoo. All over the place. But one of the very first ones you encounter, the signpost right at the entrance to the Forgotten Crossroads, is different... yes, all the scenery respawns when you leave and come back, but here, you might get to see the culprit! A humble little bug who has appeared with his little bug toolbox, fixing the signpost that you broke. What in the world? Why does he do this? What the fresh hell is going on here?! Sheesh! Calm down! It's his job! And he loves it!
If he sees you, Menderbug will get scared and fly away, with his teensy little wings. Perhaps you are expecting me to discuss what actual bug he is based on, but he's really just the sort of generic default Bug that many minor characters and enemies are in this game. And that's just fine! He is very cute. But I won't let you leave without some Bug Fact's! Though he does not look like one, the idea of an bug that builds makes me think of the horribly underappreciated webspinner! This is an insect whose front feet excrete silk, which it uses to weave its entire home, all by itself! It's not really that similar to Menderbug, but I would like you to know about them. If you didn't know about them, then it looks like this is your lucky day!
But Menderbug may not always be so lucky... unfortunately, he is killable. He is just a shy little guy who loves to fix his sign, but if you really want to, you can leave and return until he respawns by chance, and take the opportunity to kill him. And there is really no reason to do it! If you kill him, you get a little description in the Hunter's Journal (which does not count toward any completion or achievements, by the way), and access to his house, where you can read his diary. Will you do it? Will you kill this guy so you can go in his house and learn about his life that you ended yourself? Monster.
There is something lucky for Menderbug, though! It is called "internet", and it lets us learn all we need to about him without killing him! We can learn that he LOVES fixing the sign, and in fact, likes for it to break, because it means he gets to fix it more and hone his craft! We can learn that there is a certain Mender Berri who he is trying to muster the courage to tell how he truly feels... ooh la la! And best of all, we can learn that he loves what he does, he loves his life, and he feels he must be the happiest bug in all the land. This is really one of the most delightful little fellows there is, and we should try our best to be like him in real life!
