When asked why we should light blessed candles, St. Paisios the Athonite replied:
“With a candle, we are seeking something from God. When you light it, you should say: ‘For those who are suffering in body and soul, for those who have the greatest need’, and among them is also the living and the reposed.
Do you know how much rest the departed sense when we light a candle for them? Thus, one has spiritual communication with the living and with the reposed.
The candle, in a few words, is an antenna that brings us into communication with God, with the sick, with the departed … “
Lord, I pray for those souls going through their final purification in Purgatory. Please pour forth Your mercy upon them so that they may be freed of all attachment to sin and, thus, be prepared to see You face to face. Jesus, I trust in You.

“Man is sublime when he cares for the living; man is more than sublime when he cares for the dead.
A man often cares for the living out of selfishness. But what selfishness can there be in a man’s caring for the dead? Can the dead pay him, or express their gratitude?
Some animals bury their dead; giving them to the grave, they give them over to forgetfulness. But when a living man buries a dead one, he buries a part of himself with the dead man and returns home carrying a part of the dead man in his soul. This is especially clear – terribly clear – when a kinsman buries a kinsman, and a friend a friend.”
PRAYER TO OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL, HELP AND CONSOLATION OF THE SOULS IN PURGATORY
O Most Holy Mother of Mount Carmel, when asked by a saint to grant privileges to the family of Carmel, you gave assurance of your Motherly love and help to those faithful to you and to your Son. Behold us, your children. We glory in wearing your holy scapular, which makes us members of your family of Carmel, through which we shall have your powerful protection in life, at death and even after death.
Look down with love, O Gate of Heaven, on all those now in their last agony!
Look down graciously, O Virgin, Flower of Carmel, on all those in need of help!
Look down mercifully, O Mother of our Savior, on all those who do not know that they are numbered among your children.
Look down tenderly, O Queen of All Saints, on the poor souls!
(Pause and mention the names of your dearly departed)
V. Eternal rest grant unto them O Lord.
R. And let the perpetual light shine upon them.
And may the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
