It’s not as though we haven’t seen economic and corporate satires in SF before, from Frederik Pohl’s consumerist absurd­ism to Neal Stephenson’s Hoosegow franchises in Snow Crash, but back then we at least knew it was SF. Now we can’t be so sure (those corporate prisons are already out there). Doctorow wants to make us a bit nervous and more than a bit furious, and The Bezzle does exactly that.

Archie Sonic gets arrested on trumped up charges (by his supposed friends and comrades who don't believe him even when he's beseeching them that it was a misunderstanding and they don't know the full story, providing him no lenience faith or trust despite his years of friendship and service to their cause) and he just grumbles in a cell and waits for a trial wherein he proceeds to not actually explain his side of the story and instead spends the entire time insulting the prosecution, and then pleads for a parole to go off and find the true culprit. And then when he's exonerated he says Sally had nothing to apologize for - what would have happened if the 24 hours expired and he couldn't prove himself? Would he have just resigned himself to being walked to the chopping block? He was accused of TREASON so the punishment would have been death. Fuck me that entire comic story was so fucking insane, how ANYBODY could like Sally or respect Archie Sonic after that is beyond me.

Then you look at video game Sonic and A: his friends Tails and Amy immediately jump to spring him from the hoosegow even though they get labeled as fugitives themselves in the process, Amy stealing a security keycard to spring Sonic from his cell and Tails committing mass assault and property damage on a military base during the prison break and B: Sonic spends the REST OF THE GAME fleeting from the police and talking mad shit about the law enforcement up to and including hijacking the Presidents escort, not explaining himself but assuring him that they'll handle the whole Eggman threatening to blow up the country situation which the President apparently takes reassurance from since Eggmans threats "fell on deaf ears" after that scene. And while Sonic obviously clears his name by saving the planet, he never submits himself to the court for official exoneration and just keeps trucking along on his merry way after the end of it all.

Archie Sonic is the definition of a fucking beta male. An absolute whipped dog. How anybody can prefer him over the video game character is absolutely beyond me.

Today in the Department of Before They Were Star Trek Stars, Jonathan Frakes guest stars in "Mrs. Daisy Hogg," episode 1 of the fourth season of The Dukes of Hazzard (original air date November 22, 1978).

Frakes plays Boss Hogg's nephew from Atlanta, who comes to town to run a counterfeiting ring out of the family grits mill. (This show was basically a live action cartoon; you gotta just roll with it.) He and Daisy Duke fall in love and become engaged despite the longstanding feud between the Dukes and Hoggs, but it's all over when he gets caught and sent off to the Federal hoosegow. The Malibu Ken hairstyle is really working for him here.

Other Trek Connections: Stunts!

Paul Baxley, the second unit director of this episode, was also a legendary stunt performer (and patriarch of a stunt family that's performing to this day) who worked on many episodes of Star Trek. He was William Shatner's primary stunt double, frequently worked as stunt coordinator, and played a bunch of small or background roles involved in action or stunt sequences. The first part he played outside of doubling was the knight who kills Dr. McCoy in "Shore Leave."

Two uncredited stunt performers also have Star Trek connections. Ted Barba did stunts on several episodes of Deep Space Nine and Voyager, and Henry Kingi played one of the Native American colonists in the Next Generation episode "Journey's End."
