Not just space clouds! Nebulae are stellar nurseries, battlegrounds, & dying stars' farewells. Which type is your favorite? 🌌 ✨️

SPACEMAS DAY 1 ✨🪐🌎☄️☀️🌕
What a better way to start than with one of the faves!!
Fittingly named the Horsehead Nebula, it is around 1,500 light-years away, embedded in the vast Orion cloud complex and is sculpted by stellar winds and radiation. About 5 light-years "tall," the dark interstellar cloud, is cataloged as Barnard 33, is a star forming region. It is visible only because its dust is silhouetted against the glowing red emission nebula IC 434. To the lower left of the image there is a contrasting blue reflection nebula NGC 2023, surrounding a hot, young star. The featured gorgeous color image combines both narrowband and broadband images recorded using several different telescopes.

The Horsehead Nebula
Tumblr media
While The Horsehead Nebula is a real and very gorgeous thing, Saraqael is also the angel who was to erase Gabriel's identity before he escaped. Nebula is Latin for fog; mist; clouds. One type of nebula is the kind that exists in the sky that Crowley showed Aziraphale in Before the Beginning. Another kind is the brain fog of memory loss experienced by several of the characters on the show. Crowley is aligned with horses throughout the series. He and Saraqael worked together on The Horsehead Nebula and the horse head nebula. It's was Saraqael who messed with Crowley's head. It's also Saraqael whom Crowley is last seen with before he goes missing for the whole night and returns unable to remember that he can freeze time.

When Aziraphale said "I don't think you understand what I'm offering" and Crowley just staring so hurt and sadly back at Azi bc "I understand more than you"
And he did. Crowley was a high ranked angel, he worked with Saqael on the horse head nebulae, he saw metatron often enough that he recognized him in physical form when the other arch angels did not.
He can control weather and time. He had access to throne level classified documents. Crowley knows way more than aziraphale does about what it's like to work at the right hand of God and trust and hope, love and believe in it all and then have it so violently ripped from you because you dared ask "why"
He witnessed plans on things he helped create, loved, and breathed life into be destroyed at the almighty's whim and the angels following through without thought or care and it broke his faith and happiness and turned him so bitter and jaded.
Throughout the years he tried to play the part of 'evil', partly in bitterness at God, but also as a way to open Aziraphales eyes as to what he is following because he likes Aziraphale and adores him and doesn't want him trapped under the almighty's thumb to be crushed the way he was.
And after all these years and centuries, after witnessing the cruelty at angels and Gods, and hells hand, Crowley thought after the first Armageddon, that Aziraphale understood, understood him, and he was just let down all over again, the hope belief, and love just stolen from him. And he's sad more than angry at Aziraphale, bc Aziraphale still has that mindset and thinks he can change things.
Everytime that Crowley has been merciful and kind he was tortured either be heaven or hells hand, he just wants to protect this universe he helped create, and all the beings that inhabit it, and he knows for certain that he'll and heaven won't help achieve that, are actively trying to prevent it.
This whole situation is so damn tragic for both of these characters. I'm such a clown for finishing this series in two days and now I have to wait for s3.

The Universe Is Amazing !!!
if you go outside on a clear, crisp mid-winter evening and look to the eastern sky, you'll see this:
Tumblr media
The constellation Orion, the great hunter. When I was in third grade, I'd noticed those three stars in a diagonal line and thought they might be a part of something. One night, my gaze somehow opened out and I saw the whole thing, and I was flabbergasted. I actually ran into the house and dragged my Dad outside to show him what I had discovered.
Anyway..
Those three stars are Orion's "belt". Dangling below that a few other stars make up his "sword". Wait a minute tho, some of those 'stars' don't look right. Let's zoom in...
Tumblr media
This is Messier 42, the Great Nebula in Orion. Appearing as the middle star in the "sword" it is visble to the naked eye (if you have good eyes) as a fuzzy patch of light. It is a massive cloud of dust and gas, excited to luminescence by the light of several hot young stars nearby and within. Parts of the nebula complex extend up almost to the left star in Orion's belt and we can take a look at that region as well.
Tumblr media
In the upper center is Alnitak, the left-most star in the belt. The nebula complex extends down the "sword" from there. Hold on... what's that black blotch in the center? Let's zoom in more...
Tumblr media
The Horsehead Nebula (rotated to the left here) is a cloud of dust that blocks light from the glowing clouds of gas behind it. New stars are being born in the dense dust clouds.
If we zoom into the very top edge of the horse's head, we'll see...
Tumblr media
infinity. Relatively near-by bright stars (like the one at top center) but also, millions of light years away, uncountable other distant objects, most of which are other galaxies.
The closer you look, the farther and the more you see.

A Lion in Orion : Yes, but can you see the lion? A deep exposure shows the famous dark indentation that looks like a horse's head, visible just left and below center, and known unsurprisingly as the Horsehead Nebula. The Horsehead Nebula (Barnard 33) is part of a vast complex of dark absorbing dust and bright glowing gas. To bring out details of the Horsehead's pasture, an astrophotographer artistically combined light accumulated for over 20 hours in hydrogen (orange), oxygen (blue), and sulfur (green). The resulting spectacular picture captured from Raachine, Lebanon, details an intricate tapestry of gaseous wisps and dust-laden filaments that were created and sculpted over eons by stellar winds and ancient supernovas. The featured composition brings up another pareidolic animal icon -- that of a lion's head -- in the expansive orange colored gas above the horse's head. The Flame Nebula is visible just to the left of the Horsehead. The Horsehead Nebula lies 1,500 light years distant towards the constellation of Orion. via NASA
