By Marcelo Fernández Bitar [translated from Spanish]
In just over 24 hours, Louis Tomlinson passed through Buenos Aires and caused a commotion, with hundreds of fans crowding at the door of his hotel singing and shouting his name, and also occupying almost the entire block where there is a FM radio station where he went to give an interview.
The fanaticism generated with his solo career by the former singer of One Direction in Argentina is so great that in fact he will give a recital in the same stadium where he was in 2014 with the mega-boy band. It will be on May 18 in Vélez Sarsfield.
Louis Tomlinson already has two solo albums and is touring the world presenting the most recent, Faith in the Future. It came out in November 2022 and surprised with his most rocky sound, close to the Brit-pop of his beloved Oasis, and less pop. It was number one in England and three singles came out, Bigger Than Me, Out of My System and Silver Tongues.
Hurricane Louis
The visit was really fleeting with the purpose of promoting his show next month, the old-fashioned way, when the artists toured the countries to advertise albums or tours, something they currently do on Zoom or with posts on their official accounts.
Tumblr media
Louis arrived on Friday night and spent Saturday fulfilling an intense schedule of activities, to leave early the next day.
First he went to the Vélez football field for a television interview which will be televised later by TN, and then he went to the radio station Los 40 Principales, where his fans filled the entire Gorriti street, between Ravignani and Arévalo, to witness an interview where eight listeners joined to ask him a question each.
He finally arrived at 4 p.m. at the Four Seasons hotel, where hundreds of other fans were screaming for him. There he gave a series of reports and chatted with Clarín in a room equipped as a small television set, with lights and a set with his name and the cover of the disc.
"Never, not for a second, did I think I would be going through some of the same experiences," he said, "that I was lucky enough to live in the band. I thought that was something unique. So being able to come here and feel the level of love and the incredible reaction on today's radio station, means a lot to me. When I imagined what my solo career would be like, I really didn't know what to expect.
Re-filling stadiums
At 32-years-old, Louis Tomlinson has the experience of having been part of one of the greatest pop phenomena of the last 20 years, with sales records and sold-out shows in stadiums around the world. And now he is repeating the fury alone, just as it happened just a little earlier with his ex-bandmate Harry Styles.
In Louis’ case, he first sold out the closed Movistar Arena stadium in 2022 and now he goes through a huge soccer field like Vélez.
Q: Did you think that being a soloist you had to start from below and sing in smaller places?
Louis: Yes, exactly. But it turns out that I can still play in big places, so it's great.
Q: Can we really talk about a mania of a "louistomlinson-mania"? Does it happen everywhere or is it special in Latin America?
Louis: I think that in terms of the level of similar intensity, and seeing what happened a moment ago on the radio station, that certainly doesn't happen to me everywhere. Let me put it this way: it's incredible to be so far from home and feel that level of love. I'm very excited to think about what the show will be like here.
Q: It's incredible that almost exactly ten years have passed since the last time you filled Vélez. How do you feel when you return to the same stadium?
Louis: I feel very lucky to be able to play in those places again on my own. I also feel very, very proud of myself and my fans. I feel like we have created something that is quite special and we did it together. With them as listeners, but also as facilitators. That really helped my confidence and made me feel good on stage. It's a lovely relationship and I'm very proud of it.
Q: This tour started almost a year ago, how did it evolve with respect to the first shows?
Louis: I definitely feel in a good place right now with the show. Anyway, in advance I was excited about this tour because this album was designed for the live show. So I was excited to see how the songs would work. And the energy is great. I am very excited to show Faith in the Future to Latin America.
Q: How did the idea of making a live cover of Arctic Monkeys come about?
Louis: Arctic Monkeys grew up about 20 minutes from where I live. It was something very close, very fresh in the mind and obviously huge. I was growing up and I'm also a big fan. I usually do the song 505 because it's very pretty.
Often, with the versions, I probably think more about what I would like to sing than about what I imagine that everyone else would like to hear, which may be misjudged, but I'm enjoying it.
Q: When you were a teenager you sang Oasis songs and now you have a rock band that sounds very Brit-pop, almost closing a circle.
Louis: Thank you. I am very, very fortunate to have the band I have, but they also perform sonically and visually, everything that is really important to me. They sound absolutely incredible. I don't think I would be able to do this without my band.
Q: Live you also perform songs from One Direction. Did you feel that kind of shadow at the beginning of your solo career and now you are more comfortable looking back?
Louis: I think a bit about both things. I think that at the beginning of my career I would have been a little more worried about putting too many One Direction songs in the repertoire. What I wanted most was to spread my wings and show who I was. But I think that as time went by, the nostalgic moments are really charming. So it's like a beautiful mixture of nostalgia and it's very nice to do it.
Ping-pong
Q: This is the third time you have visited our country. If you had to describe your Argentine fans in three words, which one would you choose?
Louis: Passionate. Loyal. Affectionate. That’s okay, isn't it?
Q: The soccer player Kun Agüero said that there is a lot of talk to you through Instagram or Twitter. Have you ever met him in person?
Louis: Actually, we have never seen each other in person. Over the years we've talked a little here and there, but I never found time. I have a kind of crazy hope that he can come to the show.
Q: If you had to choose one of your songs, either from Walls or Faith in the Future, that reflects how you feel right now in your life, what would it be?
Louis: I would say that the name of the album (Faith in the future) represents where I am right now, but I think that in the future I would like to always be optimistic.
Q: And if all the One Direction discography was deleted and a song had to be saved. Which one would you save?
Louis: It's interesting... I would probably say Story Of My Life. That seemed like a real milestone. I would say it's a little more serious. And I also think it's a bit of a crazy song.
Q: You are a big soccer fan, do you have any preference for an Argentine club?
Louis: I'm very afraid to say something wrong... I'd better say that I love you all. (laughs)

Just a suggestion but how about a fic where Ghost is incredibly protective over the reader but doesn’t realise it’s because he’s actually in love with her
Simping for this man I swear 🧎‍♀️
The Trials and Tribulations of Being in Love Pt 1.

Pairing: Simon “Ghost” Riley x Reader

He shouldn't have come. This mission was hers, and hers alone. When they told her that Ghost had requested to accompany her on the mission, at first she felt angry, but after they embarked together, that feeling diminished. It was comforting to have someone familiar by her side, of course, she would never admit to him that she was grateful. She and Ghost had participated in previous missions together. However, as much as his presence pleased her, she was still angry that he had interfered in her mission. She refused to talk to him, but he didn't seem affected. Honestly, he even seemed to like it.
She was assigned to investigate an international arms trafficking led by a dealer whose identity was unknown. Her task was to find out who the dealer was, where he was, and to prevent the sale of weapons into the hands of Iranian military.
They had just landed at Tengah Air Base in Singapore. As she and Ghost got off the aircraft, the hot sun of Singapore hit their faces, indicating it was already late. The heat was strong, but there was a gentle breeze that made the weather pleasant. Tengah Air Base was bustling, with many people coming and going. Planes took off and landed, generating a deafening noise that seemed never to cease. There was a crowd of uniformed military personnel running back and forth, transporting equipment and luggage. Some were waiting in line to board one of the planes. Others chatted in groups, laughing and smoking. Some civilian workers in orange uniforms carried boxes and equipment into one of the hangars, while a supply truck entered the base, raising clouds of dust. Soon, a local-looking man greeted them with a polite gesture and signaled for her and Ghost to follow him. He led them to a discreet black car parked near the runway and opened the door for them to get in. The inside of the vehicle was cool and comfortable, a relief from the heat outside.
The agent seemed nervous, gripping the steering wheel tightly as he tried to maintain small talk, but his voice trembled with anxiety. Ghost remained silent, seeming lost in his own thoughts, his face expressionless. Meanwhile, she answered a question or two with disinterest, looking out at the urban landscape passing by. The tall buildings of Singapore rose majestically in the distance, forming an imposing silhouette against the sky. The streets were filled with hurried cars, blaring horns, and pedestrians rushing to escape the chaotic traffic.
Upon arriving at the hotel, which was half an hour away from the city, she and Ghost headed to their assigned room. The environment was simple, with rustic wooden furniture and white walls, without great luxuries or extravagant decorations. She observed the room, noticing details such as the two single beds with white sheets and a small built-in closet in the wall. Upon closing the door to the room, she sighed deeply, feeling the fatigue from the long flight and the confusion of time zones. Her eyes wandered around the room, noticing the open window and the fresh breeze that came in, bringing with it the scent of the forest. With a quick movement, she threw her bag on the bed and turned to Ghost, who was organizing the baggage in the room. He had taken most of her baggage. She didn't even argue against it.
"It's not the best room I've ever stayed in, but it's better than nothing," she commented with a smirk. Ghost simply nodded his head without saying a word.
She approached the window, admiring the vast green expanse of the forest that stretched out before her. The sun still shone brightly in the sky, giving a golden hue to the surroundings. With her hands resting on the windowsill, she felt the breeze hit her face, bringing a slight relief. Turning around, she walked towards her bed, pulling out the black folder she had brought with her. With agile fingers, she carefully opened it, revealing the detailed information about the arms trafficking operation that was inside. Her eyes quickly scanned the pages, absorbing every detail.
She looks at Ghost and asks, "So, what do you have in mind?"
"We need a contact in Singapore, someone who can give us information without raising suspicions."
She crosses her arms and retorts sarcastically, "Oh, is that all? That easy?"
Ghost turns around and faces her.
"No, it's not easy. That's why you're here."
"Oh, and here I was thinking I was on vacation," she says sarcastically. He rolls his eyes and moves away, going to the window.
After a few minutes of silence, she looks at Ghost and says, "There's a guy I worked with once. I met him in..."
"Is he trustworthy?"
She shrugs.
"I trust him as much as I trust you."
Ghost snorted and turns his face back to the window, saying nothing.
"I'll call him and see what I can do," she replied as she got up from the bed and went to a more private place.
After a few failed attempts, she finally managed to arrange a meeting at a bar in the city. When she returned to the room, she found Ghost sitting on the edge of the bed tinkering with his equipment. She approached him and informed him about the scheduled meeting.
"I got it. He wants to meet me at eight in a bar at Marina Bay," she said with a satisfied smile.
“Okay, I'll get ready,” Ghost replied, already getting up from the bed.
“You were not invited, Ghost,” she said, crossing her arms in front of her chest.
He looked at her as if challenging her to stop him.
"Ghost, seriously. First, he's my contact and a really difficult guy to deal with. He's going to be suspicious if someone he doesn't know shows up, especially if that person is six feet three inches tall and looks like a damn refrigerator wearing a weird skeleton balaclava." As she spoke, her tone of voice increased, not quite yelling, but her previous bad mood was becoming more evident. She stopped herself before continuing. "Second, they might recognize you. And nobody can know we have a SAS lieutenant here, got it? It'll ruin the mission."
He stared at her for a long time. She could see him struggling with his thoughts. After a few seconds, he simply shook his head and went back to tinkering with his gear.
"As you wish," he said emotionlessly. "But you'll keep me updated."
"I'll keep you updated," she repeated.
"And you'll behave. And if anything goes wrong, you'll let me know immediately and find shelter," he continued.
"Whatever you say, goes," she assured him.
He nodded. "Get ready."
And as ordered, she promptly started to get ready for the meeting. She dressed carefully, wearing a discreet outfit and no flashy accessories, so as not to draw attention from the regular customers of the bar.
As she entered the bar, she felt a bit anxious. The loud music mixed with the sound of lively conversations and glasses being placed on tables. The dim lights made it difficult to see the surroundings. She walked towards the counter, where she ordered a drink and observed the environment carefully. Small tables and uncomfortable chairs were filled with a variety of people. Minutes later, her old contact arrived at the bar and he immediately recognized her. He looked older, but equally handsome, his dark skin contrasting with his elegant purple suit. Not at all flashy, she thought. They greeted each other with a nod and sat at a more secluded table, where they could talk more privately.
After the meeting, she returned to the hotel. Ghost was checking his weapons and communication equipment again, a habit he learned over the years in the SAS. He did it a thousand times during missions, always trying to make sure everything was perfect. The only illumination came from a weak and yellow lamp, leaving the room with a dark tone. His bed was full of guns. She entered the room, closing the door softly. He turned around abruptly, holding his pistol firmly. Their eyes met, and he lowered the gun as soon as he recognized her.
"It’s me," she identified herself. Ghost sighed and turned his attention back to his equipment, without offering any response or greeting.
She approached and sat at the table, where there were documents and maps spread out.
"So, what do we have?" he asked, without looking up from the equipment.
"He said the guy we're looking for is known as The Merchant, but he doesn't know how to find him. However, if we want to find out more, we could start by looking for the port of Singapore. Apparently, it's an important trafficking point," she explained, pointing to the map.
“Which means it’s heavily guarded.”
“Wouldn't be fun if it wasn't.” She said with a smile “There’s more. He said he heard that in two days a group of Iranian military officials will arrive to make the weapons purchase.”
“Matches up with the info Laswell gave me,” Ghost said.
“I can try to infiltrate the operation and gather more intel on the flow of weapons and how they’re being transported.” She proposed, confidently.
Ghost nodded in agreement.
“Not going to be easy,” he replied.
She looked at the map attentively, searching for a point of entry.
“Where do you think we can get in?”
“Through the fish loading dock, it's less monitored and gives access to the restricted area of the port,” Ghost suggested.
“And what about the Iranians arriving in two days?” she asked.
"We have to act fast. If we infiltrate now, there will be fewer people present and the darkness will give us an advantage. In the meantime, I'll stay in a strategic position, providing cover and support in case something goes wrong."
She nodded her head, already thinking about the details of the operation. She grabbed her computer and began analyzing the port images, looking for possible weak spots. Ghost approached, getting so close that she could feel the heat of his body. She tried to ignore it as much as possible and continued.
"I don't like this," said Ghost, pointing to one of the surveillance cameras in the port. "They have eyes everywhere."
"If we know where the cameras are, we can avoid them and move more easily."
"It's risky," said Ghost, "You'll have to be very careful..."
"Understood," she said, getting up. She began checking her weapons and equipment, while Ghost prepared his sniper rifle.
"Is everything ready?" she asked.
"Yes, what about you?"
She nodded her head.
"Then let's go."
The two of them left the hotel room and headed for the port of Singapore.
It was midnight and the streets were practically deserted, with few cars circulating that part of the city. The port of Singapore was a few kilometers away and they headed there on foot.
"There's an observation point over there," Ghost said, pointing to a small building near the port. "I'm heading there."
"Great," she said, giving a mischievous smile. "Let's have some fun."
"Stay focused, agent. Security here is tight. One mistake and everything could go downhill."
"Yes, I know," she replied, with a more serious tone.
"Wait for me to give you the signal before you enter," Ghost said.
“Understood.”
“Take care of yourself. I don't want to have to carry your dead body around.”
“Oh, you're so sweet. I'm touched. Really.” She placed her hand over her heart in a theatrical gesture. He ignored her.
They parted ways and went in opposite directions.
When she arrived at the port, she successfully infiltrated it with Ghost's help in avoiding the security cameras. She crept through the shadows, avoiding the most brightly lit and crowded areas. With every step, she looked around, searching for signs of surveillance or alarms. Ghost silently accompanied her on the other side of the radio, giving precise instructions and alerting her to potential dangers only when needed. Typical, she thought.
The night was dark, with no stars in the sky. There was a cool breeze blowing, carrying with it the salty smell of the sea. The stacked containers reached impressive heights, creating a kind of maze. The port lights only partially illuminated the area, creating deep and dark shadows that moved with the wind. She walked quietly, staying low and hidden among the cargo.
Meanwhile, Ghost was stationed in a nearby building overlooking the port. The building he was in was old and had dirty, dusty windows. He used his sniper rifle to keep an eye on the entire area and provide cover for her. There was an open laptop next to him, flashing with real-time images from various security cameras scattered throughout the port.
"You've reached the entry point," he said through the radio. "There are no guards in the area. Enter and proceed forward."
She followed the instructions, advancing towards the entrance. When she arrived, she hid in the shadows and looked around, checking for any more guards or cameras.
"No sign of activity," she said, without pausing. "I'm entering now."
"Be careful," said Ghost.
She let out a mocking laugh.
"Don't worry, Ghost. I won't screw everything up."
"I hope not," he said, clearly annoyed.
"Relax," she said, trying to ease the tension. "I have everything under control."
He didn't respond. She knew he wasn't happy with the situation, but she couldn't help but find it funny.
"You know, Ghost," she said, the malice in her voice, "I love it when you're mad. Gets my blood pumping."
"Don't start with that now," he replied, in a warning tone.
She laughed again. "I know you like it."
He sighed and turned off the radio. She laughed again, feeling victorious. She knew she had managed to irritate him, but she also knew he would never leave her in danger.
"There's a guard coming your way. Get behind those containers," he whispered through the earpiece.
As she approached the heart of the port, activity increased. She noticed an area with reinforced security and armed guards, likely where the weapons shipments were kept. She knew she needed to get closer to get a clearer view. Carefully, she went unnoticed by security guards and walked through dark alleys, alert to any sign of danger.
"You're getting close to the restricted area," Ghost warned. "Be cautious."
She approached slowly, observing the guards' activity and patrol routes. Still hidden in the shadows, she prepared to move when the right moment came.
"There's a guard coming your way," Ghost whispered again.
She quickly hid and waited patiently as the guard passed, unaware of her presence. When he moved away, she advanced again. Finally, she reached the restricted area and peered through a crack in the crates. Inside, she saw a row of reinforced containers, guarded by several armed men. She focused on her breathing, remaining calm and focused.
"Are you seeing anything?" Ghost asked through the radio.
"They're guarding the weapons containers, just as we suspected," she whispered back.
"Okay, I'll cover you from here," Ghost said. "But be careful."
With Ghost's words in mind, she carefully planned her next move. She needed to get closer to get a clear view of what was inside the containers. Cautiously, she approached the entrance of the restricted area, always hiding in the shadows and avoiding the lights.
"Ghost, I think I found something. I'm going to investigate," she said to him through the earpiece.
Ghost remained in his position, watching her every move, ready to intervene if anything went wrong. Meanwhile, she advanced cautiously, dodging the henchmen and hiding behind crates and containers. She observed two men talking in hushed tones near a large green container. She approached stealthily, trying to listen in on what they were saying, but before she could get close enough, one of the men spotted her. The man was about to shout an alert when Ghost took him out. She drew her pistol and fired, hitting the other man squarely. She approached the green container and opened it carefully, finding a large quantity of weapons and ammunition, all American-made and bearing the seals of a US arms industry.
"They're trafficking American weapons to the Iranians," she whispered.
"Copy that. Get out of there fast. There's a group nearby," Ghost replied.
She carefully closed the container and moved stealthily through the port, remaining alert to every movement. Despite the orders to leave, she decided to hide and wait for the group to pass by her. She advanced cautiously, following the group from a distance, hiding behind crates and containers.
Ghost tried to persuade her through the earpiece to turn back and wait for a more propitious moment, but she ignored him. She arrived at a warehouse, where men were loading boxes onto a truck. She watched as they loaded the boxes onto the truck. Unlike the boxes in the container, these bore the flag of Germany.
"These weapons are German," she said to Ghost through the earpiece. However, he didn't respond. She tried to communicate with him a few more times, but still no answer.
That was when Ghost appeared by her side, surprising her.
"You shouldn't have come alone," he said in a reproachful tone. "You're putting your life at risk."
"I thought we could find out more, and guess what? I was right," she nodded towards the boxes marked with the German flag.
He held her arm tightly and pulled her close to him.
"Let's get out of here before we're discovered," he said urgently. "Several cars arrived with guards. Were you listening to me? I told you to wait."
He looked at her with anger. If she didn't know him, she could swear there was concern in his eyes.
"I was following a lead that I deemed important, and I was right. There are American and German weapons here," she replied, trying to justify her actions.
"You don't understand the gravity of the situation. Now we're surrounded," retorted Ghost, his voice growing louder. "Tell me, Y/N, how do you plan to get us out of here?"
He never called her by her first name. She opened her mouth to argue and closed it several times.
"I'll figure something out," she finally said.
"Oh, you'll figure something out. Are you going to teleport us?" he teased.
"You're being impossible, seriously."
"I'm only being impossible because you're being irresponsible," he countered.
The two continued arguing in a louder tone, until they caught the attention of the guards, who began to approach them. Ghost and her stepped back, but the guarda had already spotted them. They drew their guns and began shooting. One of them aimed in her direction, and Ghost quickly moved her aside. Quickly the guards went on alert.
He kept a firm stance and a serious expression as he moved with agility, trying to find cover between the boxes. She could feel her heart racing, adrenaline taking over her body. She tried to argue with Ghost, but he seemed to have taken the lead of the situation and didn't want to hear her suggestions.
"We don't have time for this now. We need to get out of here before they find us," said Ghost, trying to find a way out. "Let's go."
They moved quickly and managed to escape the location before the henchman reached them. As they ran through the port, shots echoed behind them.
"Damn the moment I decided to follow you!" Ghost shouted, still angry with her. "I told you it wasn't safe, but you never listen to me."
"I never asked you to come on this mission in the first place," she retorted, annoyed with him.
"If I hadn't come, you'd be dead by now."
"We won't get anything done if we keep blaming each other," she said.
"I'm not blaming us. I'm blaming you," he said before running towards a clear path to the left. Without hesitation, she followed him and both entered a maze of containers, using them as cover while exchanging shots with the henchmen.
One of the shots grazed her arm, making her groan in pain.
"Are you okay?" Ghost asked, concerned.
"I'm fine. Don't worry," she replied, trying to keep her voice steady as she reloaded her gun.
They kept moving, searching for an exit. The shots decreased, giving them a chance to catch their breath. They hid behind a container, regaining their breath and assessing the situation.
In a stroke of luck, she noticed an open gate and pointed it out to Ghost. He looked in the indicated direction and, without hesitation, started running towards it. She followed him, her quick steps echoing on the ground. The gate was huge. There was an armed guard standing in front of it, but for some reason, he seemed distracted. The open gate led to a wide road with many cars passing by. As they approached the gate, the guard finally noticed their presence and tried to close it, but it was too late. Ghost hit him with a knife, and he fell to the ground soon after.
They ran down the street trying to get rid of the guards who were chasing them. When they saw the entrance to the subway ahead, they approached it without hesitation and entered. People moved away, frightened, as they passed by. She couldn't help but think of the guards who were still chasing them, looking over her shoulder at all times to check if they were being followed. At one point, one of the guards managed to catch up to her and grab her, but she freed herself with an elbow strike to his rib and a kick to his stomach. In the midst of the confusion, she also managed to grab the cell phone of the guard who had grabbed her.
She looked at Ghost and spoke in a low and urgent tone:
"We need to find a way to get rid of them and get out of here."
"I agree," replied Ghost, watching the crowded platform of people coming and going.
They jumped the turnstile and ran to the train platform that was about to leave.
"Let's take the next train," she said to him. Ghost nodded in agreement.
They got on the subway car and concealed themselves amidst the crowd, blending in with the passengers. Glancing out the window, they saw the guards running towards them. The subway car was packed with people, all squeezing together for space. The air was permeated with a mix of sweat and metal. She and Ghost blended themselves in with the passengers. The guards showed up on the opposite end of the subway car, scanning around. Then, the gunfight erupted. Gunshots reverberated through the subway car, and the passengers shrunk in fear, trying to find a secure place to shield themselves. She and Ghost attempted to dodge the bullets and retaliate, but swiftly realized they were outnumbered. They spotted an emergency door close by and didn't think twice before trying their luck. With a shove from Ghost, the door swung open, and they hurled themselves into the dark tunnel, clueless of where they were headed.
Finally, they saw an entrance to a ventilation duct and crawled inside, trying to hide. Her hearts were still beating, and her breaths were tired as she and Ghost recovered from the escape.
The ventilation duct was dark and narrow, but it would do. She and Ghost squeezed into the tight space, trying to find a more comfortable position. The air was stuffy and dusty. She looked at Ghost and saw that he had a tense expression, probably still processing what had happened. They fell silent, listening to the sound of their own breaths and trying to detect any sounds that could indicate the presence of the guards. Time seemed to pass slowly, and she wondered how long it would be safe to stay there. After half an hour, Ghost spoke:
"You ruined everything. You could have gotten us killed."
"We're running against time, it seemed like a good idea to try and find out more intel. I didn't have a choice."
"You always have a choice," Ghost retorted. "You could have waited for more information, for a better plan. But no, you always have to do things your way and on your own time."
She sighed. She knew she had made a mistake, but she couldn't change what had already happened.
"I'm sorry," she said, looking down.
"I hope so," he said.

Just had a guy come up to me at this rich fancy hotel and try to buy my service dog…
Didn’t even ask if he was for sale, just asked how much. Ahh, I don’t think I really need to say this, but don’t do this. Service dogs are medical equipment and who the hell just goes around selling their dogs???

Travel Blog Anime Festival Kassel! - Part 1
27.-28. October 2023
The last convention for me this year, read further for my impression of this event which was held in Kassel for the first time, me being super chaotic, enjoying things and attending the cosplay competition.
And yes I was totally going as past!Allen the times I was "not" in costume as my glasses are round too and I had to put on the shirt/waistcoat anyways. I just HC him as an explorer when he goes to places, its my kind of having silly little fandom moments. But now to the travel blog.
Friday, Travel & Coming 'home'
Tumblr media
Travel day. I started a bit chaotic from home and later than planned but rain was forecasted the whole day and a serious hiking day was not really possible. I noticed I forgot my phone charger as I was already out and my first mission was to buy a replacement. As I arrived in Kassel I had to take a reroute as there was so much traffic but I know the city and its corners it was fine to me. All the familar places and ... I just felt home. For 19 years my favorite convention was held in Kassel until it moved to Wiesbaden this year and I was completely devastated how they handled it and left Kassel crying last year and I am just so SO happy to be able to return.
I quickly checked into the Hotel and went to the convention hall and just the feeling of seeing it again made me so content, even with the rain, the cold weather, the phone charger etc. AND the fact the Con contacted me that my script for the Contest has to be changed as there was some equipment different.
Tumblr media
I went through the park and was just thriving. Then into the city checking a few places, actually got a charger after asking the sales manager of a itty bitty corner store if they have some - i was super proud I did that, past-me would have given up and just searched for a big electronic store to drive to to avoid talking to people.
Tumblr media
As I walked back to the hall I came across a very fancy bakery/café I had discovered last year and they sold halloween themed confectonary again and ... this time I actually bought some. I dared to go in there and bought two petit fours and even as the seller asked me something twice I was just casually replying I am .. so proud. You know I suffer from severe social anxiety and a situation like this would have been enough to break me for a whole weekend, on top with the charger thing. But I was managing well. It was quite late then as I got back to the hall but still decided to ask if I could get my ticket for the next two days already to avoid waiting. Another step further for me, usually I would have chickened out. Everyone there was very darling I am looking forward on how they organize the actual convention days.
Tumblr media
Back in the hotel I had (very late) dinner, but I was just mentally in such a good place that it didn't mess with my head.
Saturday - 28. October - Contest day
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Slept okay for the fact I usually sleep bed when not home, super excited for the day. But took it slow, went through my script a few times (finally after not doing so for the last days) to recall it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then headed out to Kassel to fetch a few things, I like to give myself small tasks to have something to do when I am alone. Like just getting some snacks.
Tumblr media
After returning to my car I started painting... my make up. I actually avoid doing a lot of make up for Allen as my eyes hate it and I don't think he is a make up type but as it was for the contest I wanted to upgrade everything a little bit.
It was starting to rain again and ... someone please remind me more often that the first Uniform has a HOOD I can use. I ... will come back to that later.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After a bit of waiting time due bag control I finally was able to enter the hall. It felt again like home but also different. When you came in you had several vendors, Manga, Merch, some artists inbetween. Even a tattoo artist?! And like at the Polaris you had several vendors of dried fruit... ehm.. okay? Like I am always for more healthy options aside the vendors selling tons of asian candies and ramen.
What I really liked about the structure they had for the hall is that they actually used the hallways better than the other con, less "lost" space. Yes they have a smaller audience but it seemed so much smarter to me to use the hallways for artists instead of putting them into super small rooms with no space to move in.
For the vendors and all there was .. lots of Genshin Impact again and Demon Slayer I think? I am a bit spoiled by the last cons especially the bookfair and the polaris in regards of a great diversity of artists, this was alright I guess. Not much for me to buy.
Tumblr media
What was interesting is that the city had rented the hall to another convention but for ... doctors. Weird, but worked. As I got recognized as Allen later on I was able to talk with the two and one told me a few interesting things about the Con that moved to Wiesbaden and some facts that the Anime Festival will be bigger next year. I got encouraged to voice my opinion more often by them, as all they heard was only positive about the other Con (they didn't attend as well... reasons).
Tumblr media
Then .. the contest. I was quite nervous, got in my snacks and some lunch before I went to prejudging. Was able to chat with the other attendees during the wait and was quite a lil hyper bunny as it was my turn. I have to say the judges were super darling about everything. They were all cosplayers, some super expierenced and one even a super huge name here. I got complimented for my make up (which I adjusted a bit more after lunch) to try to get my lashes white and all. That I made pockets, that the uniform has a lining, that the pattern was selfmade and the functional buttons. etc.
Tumblr media
We were supposed to meet up 30 mins later, I waited with No. 6 (I was No 4) and got a bubble tea because my anxious mind needed something to do and I was super thirsty. I downed it so fast they went "WAIT HOW". Haha. I am used to drink a lot.
After it we were brought to the backstage and it seemed to take forever until it was my turn. No 3 before my was in a wheelchair and the crew did a great job to help her getting up the stage and stairs. And with the applause I was sure they would get the 1st rank. They did a performance as Sheego from Kim Possible.
Tumblr media
My turn was. I walked, babbled my text, actually looked at the audience and noticed it was indeed THE MOST BIGGEST STAGE they have and the whole room was full of people, I had to improvise a bit as I was not able to stuff everything into Tim but I managed well.
I was super proud and watched the rest of the contest in the audience (they had seats reserved for us). Overall it was 10 performances. The majority was voice clips/moving to them, or just music and doing a dance/pose.
Mine was actually a small sketch that was Allen looking out for Timcampy, finding and scolding him for flying away. All during the search for Cross. Then I asked the audience if they had seen the master and showed my drawing of him. Then I scolded Tim for not getting my stuff back in as I was handling too many things at once. Haha.
Tumblr media
The ranking later on was well, place 3 was a huge ass Spamalot/Monty Python and the Holy Grail Group and I was sure they will be ranked. 2nd was the Sheego, whom I had seen on 1. And 1 was a Kiki (Kiki's delivery service), I found hers rather boring to be honest as it was just an english voice clip that didn't fit the outfit or any acting at all, but well, Ghibli and cutesty bonus I guess. I would have seen others ranked.
Later on I went to pick up where I got ranked but ... in fact the voting system was hacked/there were annormalities and therefore there was no ranking other than the main 3.
I talked with some other of the contestants about the results and all were quite baffled. The two started last even said the results were not into their favor anyways as the moderators procrastinated 5 minutes to get them on stage and the majority indeed already had voted.
One last thing here: I am amazed by the positive words I got, that the performance was good and that you couldn't tell that it was my first time joining a contest, that I should do it more often. This really means a lot to me.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The rest of the day was me strolling through the halls & park again, sometimes in the park too. But the weather was not that good, it was raining a lot. I was torn about getting a maple themed bowl but as I got to really buying it it was sold out, so I got the chestnut kitkats I had eyes all the time.
I noticed I was super done for the day, there were several concerts left but I was just feeling the day and the snacks weren't holding me longer. But it was pouring... and the food vendors were outside.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After another 30 minutes I remembered I HAVE A HOOD and quickly went to the car to scrub the make up off my face and get some cotton pads from the store along with something to go with my instant noodles + tofu I had brought along. I wanted to eat in peace and not cramped outside in the rain.
Tumblr media
The day ended for me in the hotel, tired, exhausted but quite well. What annoyed me though was that there was an event with a live band in the hotel. Good bye sleep.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ending the day with food in the hotel, my little haul from stores and the fact the make up refused to get off. I would have some "fun" the coming days with that.

Disco Elysium For Beginners
So apparently my cunning plan is working and some of my mutuals are interested in learning more about my recent obsession by playing the game Disco Elysium. Great!!! In your honor, and so that I will have more people to talk about the game with, I present to you Laura's Beginner's Guide to Playing Disco Elysium.
What Is It Even About?
Hope, despair, poverty, the human condition, politics, pinball, art, love, loss, communism, experiencing a bisexual awakening in your forties, colonization, dancing, substance use disorders, unions, mental illness, truth, trying to be a good person in a completely broken society, beauty, the end of the world, joy, complicated relationships, kindness, intersectionality, the complex and problematic nature of the profession of police detective, cryptids, juvenile delinquents, PTSD, and falling helplessly in love with Kim Kitsuragi.
Oh wait, did you mean the plot?
You play as an amnesiac detective who wakes up after an apocalyptic bender that obliterated his memories. There is a dead body hanging in a tree behind your hotel, and you are there to find out who killed him with the help of Kim Kitsuragi, a detective from another precinct who has also been put on the case and who will be your partner while you are in town. You can, as the official site puts it, "become a hero, or an absolute disaster of a human being."
Where to Get It
Disco Elysium is available for Mac and PC via Steam and for XBox and Playstation (both current and previous generation) and Nintendo Switch. The current version is "The Final Cut" which includes full voice acting. The Steam version goes on sale pretty frequently - I'd keep an eye on Black Friday/Cyber Monday sales if you're interested in picking it up. The MSRP is $40 but you can often find it for around $20 if you look for a sale - the PS4 version is $17 on Amazon right now (11/15/2022).
I'm Not Really A Gamer, Can I Still Play?
Absolutely! DE does not require any "twitchy" gameplay - you interact with the game by reading/listening to text, selecting dialogue options to talk to people, and clicking things/people to interact with them in some way. It runs very much like a tabletop RPG, where all the uncertain things are decided by skill checks and dice rolls.
Notably, DE is quite replayable even though the solution to the mystery doesn't change, because different character builds will have very different experiences and may even see completely different sidequests and dialogue. Unlike most RPGs, DE makes many checks silently, in the background, and if you don't pass the check you just don't see the relevant content and never know you missed anything. I'm on my third full and sixth partial playthrough and I still find new things.
Mechanically, playing Disco Elysium goes something like this:
Go into a new area.
Look around. You will see little colored circles appearing, either on top of items/people in the environment, or sometimes around your player character's head.
Click on the colored circles to interact with them. You will learn something, do something, or start a conversation.
Doing stuff and talking to people gives you XP! Every time you get 100 XP, you get one Skill Point. You can either use it to increase one of your skills, unlock a slot in your Thought Cabinet, or forget a Thought from your Thought Cabinet. You don't have to spend them right away; you can save them up if you want to.
Once you have clicked everything you want to click and talked to everyone you want to talk to for now, go somewhere else.
Repeat.
What the Hell is a Thought Cabinet?
As you go through the game, you will unlock "thoughts" that you can ponder. You have a certain number of slots in your "thought cabinet" where you can be mulling over an idea; you start with three slots and can unlock more up to a max of 12. Thoughts will have certain effects while you are thinking about them, which might be positive or negative. While you are still thinking them over, you can equip or unequip them at will. Each "thought project" takes a specific amount of time.
Once you have spent the designated time on a thought project, you will see the message "Breakthrough Imminent" and then you will "internalize" the thought. The thought will have effects on the gameplay, which can include skill buffs and debuffs or other effects. Once the thought is internalized, you can no longer unequip it. It will take up that slot permanently unless you spend another skill point to forget it.
So what thoughts should I internalize?
A lot of them are mainly for flavor or role-playing but a few notable ones:
Actual Art Degree gives you bonus XP when you pass a passive Conceptualization check. This is the most common passive check in the game, so AAD is the thought to take if you want to get as many skill points as possible. You unlock the thought by talking about art as much as you can.
Get Jamais Vu as early as you can on Day 1 by talking with Joyce Messier at the dock. It opens up some key dialogue options and skill checks as well as giving you bonus XP whenever you click an orb.
Ace's High or Ace's Low gives you extra Empathy bonuses towards Kim. Which you will want, because Kim is the Best.
Wompty-Dompty-Dom Centre is available starting on Day 3 and will give you $2 and some XP when you pass an Encyclopedia check.
Homo-Sexual Underground. Its only effect is to allow you to talk about sexuality with Kim. Therefore it is the most important thought in the game, because approximately 90% of players will be in love with Kim by the second in-game day.
Okay, What About Skills?
Your character "build" (strengths, weaknesses, abilities, etc.) is primarily determined by two things that you can adjust as the game progresses by spending Skill Points: Skills and Thoughts.
Skills in DE are similar to skills in other RPGs in that they determine how good you are at various things. The main difference is that instead of the more traditional skills like strength, dexterity, or charisma, DE has skills like Savoir Faire, Rhetoric, and Empathy. As befits a game that emphasizes the story and characters over combat, the skills are a lot less about how good you are at punching monsters and a lot more about the state of your character's head. The skills are broken down into four categories:
Blue or Intellect skills - brainy stuff like Logic, Rhetoric, and Encyclopedia.
Purple or Psyche skills - emotional stuff like Empathy, Volition, and Authority.
Red or Physical skills - the condition of your physical body. Endurance, Electrochemistry, and Pain Threshold live here.
Yellow or Motorics skills - how well you use your physical body. Things like Hand Eye Coordination, Perception, and Composure.
There are good descriptions of each skill in the game. At the beginning, you can choose from three predefined archetypes (Thinker, Sensitive, or Physical) or create your own by allocating 12 points between the four skill categories and picking one skill as your "signature."
What Is The Best Skill Build?
There isn't an "best" one! You can play the game equally successfully with any build, but different builds will feel very different to play, especially early in the game.
That said, I would recommend against doing a 3-3-3-3 build because it just won't be as fun. Most skills generally start to really show effects at around a 4, and failing skill checks is often funny and shouldn't lock you out of completing any checks except if you've done something really unusual.
Basically the "best" build for you is whatever is the most fun - pick something that speaks to you and go for it.
In general, Intellect builds will get a lot of worldbuilding and lore and be really good at detecting. Psyche builds will have a better sense of other people and the world and strong intuition. Physical builds tend to be able to punch their way through obstacles but aren't very smart or empathetic and struggle with following their gut instincts/cravings without thinking about it. Motorics builds will find several early-game skill checks a lot easier for them and will be good at skills like shooting, picking locks, noticing stuff, keeping cool under pressure, and talking about cars.
Some key things to consider when deciding on your character build:
Encyclopedia is the skill that gives you lore and worldbuilding information.
If you want to min-max your build to get as many skill points as possible, make sure you have good Conceptualization so you can unlock the thought Actual Art Degree.
Esprit de Corps is similar to Empathy, but it works specifically on other cops. Doing a run with high EDC helps unlock a ton of lore about many of the other key characters in the game.
Electrochemistry will try to get you to drink, smoke, have sex, and take drugs. It will also give you insights into the drinking/smoking/drugging/sex habits of others. VERY high EC will allow you to unlock a leopard-print unitard underwear option for your player character.
You have two health pools, Health and Morale. Health is affected by the Endurance skill and Morale is affected by the Volition skill. If you start a game with only 1 point in either purple or red skills, that can mean you die very easily early in the game. My first playthrough I did a high INT build and I died in the first room of the game from turning on the lights even though I had a terrible hangover. So just be aware.
Shivers is my favorite skill in the game and I'm not alone there. Shivers allows you to have a connection to your city. A lot of the best moments in the game come during Shivers checks and the writing is generally really evocative. Great for atmosphere.
My favorite skills are Esprit de Corps for character knowledge, Shivers for cool atmosphere, and Drama because Drama is just really funny.
What Else Do I Need To Know?
If you seem stuck, go somewhere else and talk to more people OR spend a skill point to level up a skill.
You can zoom in and out. My first playthrough I didn't realize this for a while and kept missing certain characters who were standing somewhere I needed to be zoomed out to see.
A lot of things that are usually part of game menus have to be unlocked. You get a map by buying it at the bookstore. You get your stats and to-do list by finding your police ledger.
Cuno seems horrible but if you gain his trust there's a lot of depth to his character. There is also a potential ending where Cuno acts as your partner during the endgame.
Do the sidequests. They are often the best stories in the game.
Don't be TOO afraid of disappointing Kim. If you avoid being racist/sexist/hurting people, he will usually come around.
That said, if you play as a terrible person he won't be your friend anymore. I don't know how people can take the emotional trauma of that, but some people do!
Save frequently, Just In Case.
Don't be too hasty to reset. Let things play out. Most of the deaths are pretty funny and sometimes you might think you died but really you didn't.
That said, it's fine to reload a save if you messed something up. It's a single player game, it isn't "cheating" to do this if you want to.
If you fail the red check at the church it is extra double okay to reload a save and make that not have happened. (This is probably one of the two highest-stakes skill checks in the game because if you succeed you get one of the best scenes in the game and if you fail you get one of the worst.)
Look at everything and talk to everyone.
I like to keep at least one unused skill point at all times in case I need to unlock a skill check I've failed once.
If you arrest someone or send the body to Processing, Kim will be gone for the rest of the day. There are some things you can only do with him and some you can only do without him, so plan accordingly.
Hope this helps and always feel free to ask if you want more help/get stuck/need hints/just want to scream about the game with me!!

Extinction Curse Session 2024/04/03
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Buffy, in her adamantine dragon form, flew the party safely back to Willowside. After they had touched down on the circus grounds, Buffy reverted back to her original vending machine form.
"Well," Midori exclaimed as she pulled out her healer's tools and a roll of silvery adhesive bandages, "let's get to patchin' ev'ryone up." She pulled off a length of bandage with a loud ripping sound.
After Midori had healed the party's wounds, they all slept for the night and then made their daily preparations. The Circus of Wayward Wonders will perform tonight!
Midori left for the town square to advertise and sell tickets. The others ran errands, rehearsed acts, and helped set up for the night.
Ticket sales were brisk, considering the food crisis that enveloped the town. The stands would be full! With their share of tonight's income, the party went shopping.
Midori upgraded her rapier with a Greater Striking rune. The others similarly upgraded their equipment in wake of yesterday's resounding defeat at the hands of the xulgath dinosaur riders. Next time, the party will be better prepared!
Soon, the time arrived for the show to begin! Midori strode out to the center ring in the darkness of the big top, casting the cantrip to project her voice magically and, for good measure, casting another cantrip to provide her with musical accompaniment. The spotlight lit her up and she started her introduction.
"ANNNNNNNNND NOW, because you ignored us as we landed on your shoreline but you let us set up in town anyhow, we present to you the only REAL circus show in the Inner Sea: the CIRCUS OF WAYWARD WONDERS!
"Tonight, we have some special guests. Some VIPs who are visiting from far, far away. I would like to personally welcome them here tonight!
"I'm Midori, your AB-solutely a-DOR-able ringmaster, and I will be—"
A wolf whistle and a "Yow!" from opposite sides of the stands interrupted her monologue.
"Yes, yes, I know ya all love me, but ya gotta stop sendin' me flowers, your hotel keys, and the skulls of my enemies. They won't work. I'm married to the circus!"
Midori's banter elicited some chuckles from the audience.
"So I will be introducing to you all of the exciting, death-defying, mind-warping (did I say exciting?), and thrilling acts that are to come! Just remember, for your safety, to keep your arms and legs close to your bodies, and that the first two rows are the SPASH ZONE! You'll see what I mean when Zookdar performs, so get your complimentary oilcloths ready. They're under your chairs!
"So hold on tightly! Your ticket paid for the whole seat BUT YOU'LL ONLY NEED THE EDGE!!"
The band started up the music and Midori sang:
🎶🎶🎶 Thank you for coming to the grandest show in town, Where wonders await and smiles replace every frown. A spectacle of colors, where magic and reality blend, Axel's birds take flight, with sweets they descend.
The Dwarven Throwers, stout and brave, They soar through the air, the audience they crave. Elizia's serpents, a dance so divine, With Mr. Tickles, they twist and entwine.
Hear the music, feel the beat, in your heart, Magical Myrrie plays her part, a symphony to start. The Feather-Fall Five, acrobats so fine, On trapeze and tightrope their skills will shine
In the center ring, the lights shine bright, Every act, a story, every performer a sight. The circus is more than a mere delight, It's a world of wonder, taking flight.
So gather 'round, the show's about to begin, The Circus of Wayward Wonders, where dreams spin. The ringmaster's song, a call to all who hear, "Come join the wonder, come join the cheer!" 🎶🎶🎶
First came Axel, clad in a black top hat and cape, who performed very well tonight; his birds flew in synchronized formations and successfully delivered small treats to the hungry children in the audience.
Next came The Dwarven Throwers who formed a living ballista and launched each other across the big top.
Then Elizia Pumperknickel and her anaconda, Mr. Tickles, emerged with several dancing snakes.
Magical Myrrie, in a marching band uniform and bare feet, took the center ring, playing music on her flute while a violin and trumpet floated through the air behind her, providing accompaniment.
More and more acts followed, building excitement and anticipation. Before long, the time came for the grand finale. Midori strode to the center ring, her voice amplified and her magical musical accompaniment playing.
"My good beings from Golarion and beyond!" Midori's voice boomed throughout the big top. "I present to you: the grand finale!"
Before the planned act could get underway, however, a loud ripping sound reverberated through the tent. Looking upward, all could see claws slashing through the big top roof! Immediately, winged dinosaurs with xulgath riders burst through.
Tumblr media
Through the commotion, some shouts from the crowd stood out: "What are those?" "Quetzalcoatluses!" "Are they real?" "Oh, those are clearly created with illusion magic."
One of the riders, a xulgath herd-tender trained in dinosaur care and riding, lit up a flask of alchemist's fire and threw it at the performers, missing its target but setting fire to the side wall of the tent.
Galon shouted, "To arms! Repel the attackers!" He then activated his flight magic and took to the air to get closer to the flying intruders.
Midori's musical accompaniment changed with her mood into an angry, defiant, metal anthem with guitars and percussion. Her voice continued to boom across the circus tent as she shouted, "Xulgaths? Attackin' us on our own turf? Are we gonna put up with that?"
The circus performers and audience responded as one: "NO!"
Midori then sang to inspire courage in her allies:
🎶🎶🎶 We're not gonna take it! No, we ain't gonna take it! We're not gonna take it anymore! 🎶🎶🎶
The crowd cheered! Some in the audience feared for their lives, while others thought the battle was all part of the act.
One of the xulgath riders turned to another and asked in Draconic, "<Why are they singing?>" The other simply shrugged.
Stuck on the ground while all the action was in the air, Midori inhaled deeply and let loose a bone-rattling scream like that of a banshee meant to cause painful vibrations at one of the flying dinosaurs, which swerved out of the way just in the nick of time.
Standing next to Midori, Lysander cast a spell to rip the spirit out of another dinosaur, causing it to screech in pain.
The dinosaurs swooped at the party to attack, but most of the attacks missed. Unfortunately, one flask of alchemist's fire hit Midori, burning her and setting her on fire!
Up in the air, Galon deftly flew up to a dinosaur, unleashing a flurry of blows.
Buffy's metallic voice shouted, "MIDORI, FLY!"
Granted the gift of flight, Midori flew upwards to flank the dinosaur Galon had just attacked, extinguishing the flames that were licking at her jacket in the process. Unnoticed, the stirring of the air currents served to fan the flames that were beginning to take hold in the tent walls.
Again, Midori inspired courage:
🎶🎶🎶 We've got the right to choose, and There ain't no way we'll lose it This is our life, this is our song We'll fight the powers that be, just Don't pick on our destiny, 'cause You don't know us, you don't belong 🎶🎶🎶
She followed up with a rapier strike at the dinosaur, landing a blow easily and causing a great deal of damage. "Ha ha! Yeah, take it all, bitch!"
Lysander joined in, gesturing to the audience and singing a lingering composition with a courageous anthem. The audience, taking his cue, started singing along with the chorus.
🎶🎶🎶 We're not gonna take it No, we ain't gonna take it We're not gonna take it anymore 🎶🎶🎶
Galon steeled himself, focusing in concentration, shouting louder and louder as his energies built up around him like yellow flames. He released Wronged Monk's Wrath on the flying enemies, burning them and lighting them on fire, eliciting oohs and ahhs from the audience. One dinosaur fell into a heap on the ground with its rider.
"Careful, Galon," Midori protested, "you singed my fur with that one!"
Buffy sent out some soothing magic to Galon and Midori to keep them in the battle.
"Thanks, Buffy!"
Midori continued the song:
🎶🎶🎶 Woah-oh-oh Woah-oh-oh We're right (yeah) We're free (yeah) We'll fight (yeah) You'll see (yeah) 🎶🎶🎶
Two more strikes from her rapier, and the dinosaur was down! "That's right! You don't mess with us!"
Buffy changed form into an adamantine dragon, then used her breath weapon to torch dinosaurs and xulgaths alike. The crowd went wild with thunderous applause!
One of the riders pointed at Buffy and shouted in Draconic, "<Take down their support!>"
Two of the dinosaurs swooped down at the automaton, but Lysander jumped in with a martyr's intervention to take the hits instead. However, the effort was not enough as Buffy took enough damage to revert to her original form and shut down.
"Buffy, no!" Galon followed the dinosaurs downward, taking a few bites and slashes in the process, but with another combination of punches, he took out one of the riders.
Midori, noticing that Galon was bleeding much more than he should, pulled a healing potion from her bandolier and flew down to offer it to him. "Comin' to ya with some health, Galon!"
McBuffington, Buffy's faery dragon companion and a much faster flier than Midori, intercepted the potion, flew to the unconscious Buffy, and poured it into her coin slot. The audience laughed at the antics.
As Buffy stood up from the ground,  Midori exclaimed, "What? Automatons can use potions? Sorry, my bad!"
Buffy healed Galon better than the python would have, but the nearest xulgath put an end to that, quickly knocking her out again.
Pulling together in a final push, the party took out another enemy and fought the last two foes bloody.
As the remaining dinosaur and rider fled, Midori belted out a final verse at them:
🎶🎶🎶 We're not gonna take it (come on!) No, we ain't gonna take it (you're all worthless and weak) We're not gonna take it anymore (now drop and give me 20) 🎶🎶🎶
With the attackers gone and the notes of the final verse fading, the remaining audience jumped to their feet, exploding into applause and cheers.
An elf in the stands turned to his partner. "Quite the show! I'll be looking forward to the next performance to see how they top this one!"
His partner replied, "Mm, yes, quite."
Midori ran to Lysander and gave him a victory double-high-five, but just then the big top collapsed around them into a pile of ash and burnt wooden poles. Fortunately, nobody was injured by the debris, but all Midori could do was survey the devastation, her ears twitching and her mouth agape with shock.

New "houseperson" job posting from the Casino. I'd prefer that to cleaning the individual rooms, really. The part where it says you have to clean out the ash trays puts me off applying more than anything else. I don't want to work around smokers.
"Reports problems and safety issues to supervisor" could have been ONE bullet point, not added to almost every bullet point AND it's own bullet point.
Uses daily checklist to direct and record activities
Inspects entries including: door mats, trash cans and cigarette urns to ensure cleanliness standards have been met. Cleans and reports any problems to supervisor.
Maintains cleanliness of Lobby, sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, dusting, picking up debris and trash, emptying trash cans.

Thoroughly familiar with Emergency Procedures.
Familiar with HAZCOM as related to position. Follows all chemical and equipment safety handling procedures.
Always alert for Security and Safety issues and hazards and reports same immediately to supervisor.
.... jfc that's a lot to expect one person to do.
The only thing I really can't do is using the floor buffer. My back can't take the side-to-side motion which is why I had "no mopping" on my permanent profile in the army.

Masonry Monday: The Case of the Corresponding Corpse
The latest Perry Mason client is a dead man -- or at least, he's supposed to be. The "deceased" George Beaumont resurfaces after an insurance investigator finds him, only to die for real as he attempts to turn himself in. Mason sides with the prime suspect, Beaumont's jilted girlfriend.
Tumblr media
Who's Who
Perry Mason's client: Ruth Whittaker, a hapless art student whose boyfriend wasn't who she thought he was
The victim: George Beaumont, a legally dead salesman who intends to 'fess up to his insurance fraud
Suspects: Laura Beaumont, the victim's "widow," who built a business on his life insurance payout and may not want to relinquish the money George McKay, a sales manager at Beaumont's company, who has eyes for Laura and thought little of Beaumont Harry Folsom, a slimy insurance investigator who tracked down Beaumont three years after he faked his death Jonah Whittaker, Ruth's sick-but-loud father, who didn't approve of his daughter's relationship with Beaumont
The Setup
In a rundown house in Crestview City where a woman's portrait hangs on the wall, a man who admits his name is George Beaumont is negotiating with an insurance investigator who's tracked him down named Harry Folsom. Folsom implies he's willing to keep Beaumont's location and new identity a secret for a price. There's a knock at the door: It's Ruth Whittaker, Beaumont's lady friend. Beaumont minces no words, telling her Folsom plans to blackmail him, as he could be jailed if he's exposed. Ruth immediately volunteers to pay. Folsom hands her a card and leaves. Beaumont angrily refuses to give Folsom anything.
Later, Folsom is waiting in a much bigger (but equally rundown) house -- Ruth's. She gives him $7,000 and he gives her the copies of his report. She demands to know the source of his information, but he won't say. A man screams Ruth's name, and she hustles Folsom out, then tosses his reports in the fire. The loud man is Ruth's father, and she angrily tells him she's leaving, storming out with a suitcase over his objections.
Tumblr media
In Perry Mason's office, Della takes a message from Beaumont, then reports on it to Perry when he arrives for work. Perry is baffled, as George Beaumont has been dead for three years. He supposedly perished in a plane crash on a business trip. Their resurrected client will call back at six that night. At Beaumont's house, the woman's portrait has been removed from the walls along with all of Beaumont's belongings. The landlady tells Ruth that "Mr. Hollister" moved out. Beaumont left her a note and the portrait, saying he won't hide anymore and that he loves her.
Enter Perry Mason, Attorney at Law
In the Beaumont Office Equipment Inc headquarters, sales manager Glenn McKay enters and cheerfully greets the secretary before letting himself into the office of general manager and boss Laura Beaumont. McKay tells her about a large order they've received, and not-so-subtly asks Laura out, but she's hesitant to date after her first marriage. The secretary interrupts to say that Perry Mason -- her late husband's lawyer -- is waiting in the outer office.
Laura introduces McKay and asks Perry what he's there for. He tells her they were organizing his office and found George Beaumont's file, asking if she'd like to keep any of the papers for personal reasons. She declines and bins the file. Perry thanks her and leaves. Sometime later, a cab arrives at the Villa Motel and drops off Ruth Whittaker, who enters the hotel room of the very alive George Beaumont, who appears to be waiting for someone.
Tumblr media
Ruth asks Beaumont why he left, and Beaumont says he plans to turn himself in, even if it means prison time. Ruth tells him that the insurance company doesn't know he's alive, but he's not listening. He's hoping that Perry, his lawyer, can get him a light sentence, and he plans to patch things up with Laura -- his wife. He wrote to her to tell her he was still alive. Ruth is furious, especially when Beaumont refers to her as his "friend."
Beaumont confesses that he never stopped loving his wife, and that he actually missed the plane because he'd stopped to buy her a gift after an argument. Ruth berates him for not telling her about all of this when they first met, and confesses that she spent all of her money to pay off Folsom. She grabs a letter opener from the desk and yells at Beaumont some more. The motel manager interrupts and berates them for the noise, then gives Ruth the key to her own room. She storms out.
The Murder
Della and Perry wait up for the expected call from George Beaumont, but it hasn't come by 10 that night. Paul says his goodnights, as Perry wants to wait up longer. The phone rings, but it's not Beaumont -- it's Lt. Tragg, who's in a certain cabin in the Villa Motel. George Beaumont is dead, for real this time. They find Perry's number on a paper in his pocket. Perry agrees to identify the body, and he and Della drive to the Villa Motel (Perry refuses to let her see the body).
Tumblr media
Perry confirms the dead person is George Beaumont, and Tragg says it's unusual for someone to die twice. He notes the letter opener is the murder weapon. Tragg says Burger suspected Perry counseled Beaumont to lay low, which Perry denies. They've figured Ruth for the killer, as she was upset about Beaumont's plan to return to his wife -- turns out someone heard her yelling at Beaumont. Tragg thanks Perry for cooperating.
Sometime later, Perry meets with Ruth in a holding cell. She tells him about meeting Beaumont (or "Hollister") in an art class, and about Folsom's blackmail. She also refuses to let Perry contact her father. When Perry asks if she killed Beaumont, she insists she didn't. Once she'd cooled off, she realized his untenable situation and that he still loved his wife. Perry tells her that he'll act as her lawyer, and she breaks down in tears.
The Investigation
Later, Perry meets with Laura, who's frosty with him. McKay enters and Perry asks him if he knew Beaumont -- he did. McKay worked for him for six months, and felt Beaumont was a failure. Next, Perry asks if Folsom approached either of them. Laura, at least, had good reason to entertain a blackmailer, as Mercury Mutual paid her $90,000 in life insurance on Beaumont. Laura tells him she had no idea Beaumont was alive, but Perry doesn't need her word -- Paul Drake is in Crestview City, meeting with Folsom as they speak.
Tumblr media
During said meeting, Folsom tells Paul that he got an anonymous call about Beaumont -- he can only say the caller was a man. He denies that Ruth paid him, but Paul notes he hasn't filed the report on Beaumont with Mercury. Folsom gets nasty at this point, and claims that Beaumont told him that Perry Mason was the one who told him to lay low after the plane crashed, with Mason collecting $25k on the deal. Paul isn't impressed, and asks again about the anonymous call -- Folsom confesses that it was Jonah Whittaker, Ruth's father.
Back in Perry's office, Paul says he doubts Folsom killed Beaumont, but Della points out he had a motive: Beaumont had no reason to conceal Folsom's attempted blackmail when he came clean. As for Whittaker, he wasn't at his home, but Paul tracked him as far as a bus to Los Angeles. Perry surmises he'll try to contact Ruth, though he hasn't done so yet, and Della says Ruth had to know her father was the informant. Paul gets a call from one of his men. Whittaker's being held by the district attorney's office.
The Trial
Tragg opens the testimony at the preliminary hearing, testifying as to the layout of the murder room. They found blood of the victim's blood type on the murder weapon, as well as Ruth's fingerprints. On cross, Mason asks about the stab wounds -- Beaumont was stabbed in the back while kneeling in the corner of the room. Burger next calls Leon Corby, the Villa Motel manager, and he testifies as to the argument between Beaumont and Ruth.
Tumblr media
On cross, Mason asks about what Corby saw when he interrupted the argument. Corby saw Ruth holding the letter opener without gloves, and Mason notes she would have left her fingerprints on the weapon at that time. That was at 3pm, and Corby found the body at 8pm, meaning another person wearing gloves could have handled it at that time. On redirect, Burger asks when Corby next saw Ruth -- he saw her at around 5:45, coming out of Beaumont's room. He didn't see Beaumont then.
Next, Folsom testifies about Ruth's presence at his initial meeting with Beaumont, and also that she paid him $7,000 so he wouldn't file his report. Burger interprets this as her wanting to keep her relationship with Beaumont. On cross, Mason wastes no time calling Folsom on his blackmail, and notes that he's made a deal with the DA to avoid a charge for it. Folsom cops to the blackmail of Beaumont, but denies getting touch with Laura. Given that he knew Beaumont was going to turn himself in, Folsom definitely had a motive.
Laura Beaumont testifies about her late husband's business trip and the crashing of the American Eagle he was supposedly on. He never got in touch with her afterwards and she never knew he was alive. She refers to her office diary as to her movements on the day of the murder. She goes through her day, including Mason's visit to her office, which Burger notes. She became ill that afternoon and spent the rest of the day at home on the orders of her doctor.
Tumblr media
On cross, Mason asks Laura about her illness -- allegedly it was food poisoning. He asks about Beaumont's correspondence, and Laura maintains that she received none from her husband. Ruth looks surprised at this. Burger calls Jonah Whittaker, but Mason asks for a moment to speak with Ruth, and the judge calls the noon adjournment.
Perry speaks with Ruth, who says she told her father about Beaumont's real identity, but can't remember if she also told him about Laura. She insists Laura must have known Beaumont was alive, as he said he wrote her a letter. She'd forgotten, but then remembers all the details, including that Beaumont didn't telephone Ruth. Perry suddenly freezes, then leaves the holding cell in a hurry, saying he's got to speak with Paul.
Back in court, Burger questions McKay while Paul slips into the courtroom. McKay testifies that Tragg, while investigating the Beaumont offices, found an envelope addressed to Laura with Beaumont's initials. Mason examines the letter -- it's from Beaumont, apologizing and claiming he's going to call her after speaking with Mason himself. Mason and Burger both note that the seal has been tampered with, meaning someone knew Beaumont was alive and intended to turn himself in . . .
In Summation
Tumblr media
After almost one whole season of scoundrels and bitches as the victims of each case, the first victim of Perry Mason Season Two is no vicious, abusive bastard -- just a pathetic failure of a person in need of a little karma who somehow won the hearts of two women who are way too good for him. It's a welcome change, because the first season was getting more than a little same-y in that regard.
That's not to say he's not an asshole. Stringing Ruth along for years only to reveal at the last minute that he's still in love with his wife and considers her a "friend" is classic dick behavior. Don't we all know that one person who can't get over their ex even though they were the one to call it off (or vanish off the face of the earth, in this case)? While I'm glad Ruth stands up to him in the moment and straight tells him she's not the one who should be ashamed of her behavior, it still irks me that she's later more forgiving of him.
This episode is a bit of a twist on the mystery trope of a person faking their death. George Beaumont's "death" via plane crash appears to have been nothing but an improvement for his wife and business, and neither one was searching for him nor would welcome his return. Instead, it's the insurance company that's most interested in dredging him out of his artists' hovel and getting their money back -- not particularly romantic, but realistic for sure.
Tumblr media
The central clue of the case appears to be the letter that Beaumont sent before he died, which can be a bit confusing since it's mentioned once early in the episode and then doesn't reappear until near the end. It's a bit of a flimsy device compared with others in the season, because the mechanism by which it becomes a clue isn't introduced until the final scene -- I don't want to say too much more for fear of spoilers, but I think you'll see what I mean when you watch the episode.
There are certain parts of the episode that don't quite make sense to me -- it's not exactly clear, for example, how Jonah Whittaker found out about Beaumont's lie and which insurance company to contact. It's also not explained by Ruth is so out of sorts with her father despite living in his house. Ruth is a feisty woman: If she didn't want to be around her father, I don't think she would be. Also, how did she manage to follow Beaumont all the way back to Los Angeles and track him down as precisely as the correct hotel room?
Overall, this is a solid case from which to start the first season, even if the central story hook gets less engaging the longer the case goes on. My favorite part is Perry's bafflement when Della tells him that Beaumont contacted his office -- it's rare to see our favorite lawyer taken off-guard. I didn't mention it in the recap, but the reason Della didn't know about Beaumont was because she was on an extended vacation -- nice to know Perry offers her lots of chances to relax!
Tumblr media
I always enjoy it when a character -- particularly one with no legal background -- criticizes Perry Mason's legal technique. In this case, it's his tendency to find the guilty party rather than simply aim for an acquittal. They aren't wrong, but within the context of Perry Mason's world, that technique works. The only people who would have any standing to whine about that would be Hamilton Burger and maybe some of the judges.
Speaking of which, this is the first episode where we ever see a female judge behind the bench. Character actress Lillian Bronson, who appeared in Season One's "The Case of the Sulky Girl" as Clara, would make three appearances as the series' only Her Honor. She was not breaking new ground, necessarily, as notable female attorneys and judges already served in real life, but it's still nice to see a bit of diversity in a rotating cast of white male judges.
The Verdict
Judgement: ⚖⚖ (two scales out of four) A man no one really wanted alive returns from the dead, and the case gets marginally less interesting when he dies for real. However, the central plot hook is interesting enough to keep the pace up until the mystery ends, baffling final clue or no.

Blog Post 20-01-2023 - Wedding Fairs
Well another week has gone by and it's time for the weekly blog post, and this week i’d like to talk a little bit about Wedding Fairs.
For anyone that has ever gotten married or has been part of an organising party of such, you no doubt will have visited a wedding fair; an event where suppliers within the wedding industry exhibit and its an opportunity for prospective clients to see multiple businesses all under the same roof. They can be invaluable for those planning a wedding to get ideas and inspiration, and even secure quotes and favourable rates/special offer discounts from suppliers.
From a business point of view it can be an excellent way of meeting clients face to face, to be able to give insights into your business and discuss on the spot questions and enquiries from prospective clients. It can be a brilliant way to build a mailing list if you run one, and get your business ‘seen’.
But they can also be expensive to exhibit at, and as with this blog I like to give an insight into the behind the scenes of running a wedding decor business, I've been asked a lot recently if i’ll consider going back to exhibiting at wedding fairs.
In the short term; No.
But that doesn’t mean I won't have a presence at them. So let me explain the costs.
Take a fair at a leisure centre or large event space. It can cost the organisers of the fair thousands of pounds to rent a large hall for an entire day, anywhere from £2000 to £5000, or even more depending on the space and location. There will be a range of businesses there, and many will require varying sized exhibition spaces, so you would on average be able to have approximately 30 suppliers within one large ‘sports’ hall. Not to make this a maths lesson, but £2000 / 30 is around £66 but £5000 / 30 is around £166. This is the net cost of each 6ft x 6ft space. The organisers need to cover their costs and also make a profit (yes, profit!), so for simple maths lets call it that they mark up the costs to be between £100 and £200 per pitch for each exhibitor.
So say I am now hypothetically thinking of exhibiting. The cost to me just to rent the space is going to be £100 at a minimum. But I also have to provide all my own display equipment, and foremost it needs to look nice. This isn’t a market where items are just strewn on a table, I need to set the tone and portray an image for my product. I need a table, coverings, display shelves, baskets, business cards or promotional flyers, actual products, and samples to give out;
Sturdy Fold up table: £80
Tablecloths: £25
Shelves: £50
Baskets: £25
Business Cards/Flyers: £15
Display Product: £50
Samples: £50
This means, the outlay for a wedding fair comes to around £395. Yes some of these items are multi use items that once the investment is made can be used multiple times. But then there are also other ancillary costs to consider; fuel/travel costs, parking charges, lunch/refreshments. So all in all you can be looking at an investment of £400 to £500 for your first wedding fair, and then maybe £250 to £350 thereafter for future fairs.
It's a big investment, and as a small business you need to consider whether or not you can recoup the costs with sales that lead from meeting potential clients at the fair. If your product is valued over £500 per item, then this can easily be done, and with just 3 or 4 successfully made sales, you’ve not only covered your costs but made a tidy profit.
But when your product’s average purchase by clients is between £20 to £50 per sale, you would need to see 20 to 30 sales just to be in the same position as those big ticket items such as wedding dresses or venue exhibitors such as hotels. However the reality is that you don’t see that many returns versus footfall at a fair. People can be nervous and just want to look but feel if they stop and chat they’ll be talked into buying something and get the hard sell. As an introvert myself i fully understand this, but all hope isn’t lost…
Goody bags! These things are little gold mines. I myself am very fond of a goody bag. A little sack of treats, as if you’ve scavenged samples of the entire room. Details of who provided them and links to websites and social media so you can have a contact free look at the company’s products, whilst having your sticky little paws on a sample of what they make! Can you guess where this blog post is finally going?! On behalf engaged introverts among us, in 2023 you’re going to be able to find Redhill Confetti sample packs in wedding fair goody bags. The first two fairs you will find our freebie packs in are;
The Quirky Wedding Fayre, ‘The Venue on Middle Street’ Croydon, 28th January 2023
Tumblr media
The Quirky Wedding Fayre, The Faversham, Leeds, 19th February 2023
Tumblr media
Details for both can be found at
https://www.quirkyweddingfayre.co.uk/
And we are currently in talks with a few other locations and events to be included in goody bags for other dates in 2023.
So there we have it, hopefully i’ve been able to give you an insight into the behind the scenes costs of wedding fairs, and if you are lucky enough to receive one of our freebies, drop us a line with what you think of it!
See you next week,
Simone
PS. 3 people didn’t like last week’s post and unfollowed us on instagram, so we’re down to 995 followers. I told you the 1000 follower mark is a magical unicorn!
