I love that there’s two House Fossoways and it all started because of messy familial drama involving Dunk (Dunk is so good at causing familial tension)
And it’s been DECADES and they’re still refusing to mend the divide, but they still live near each other, and several of them are married to the Tyrells, so they still each other at holidays
Like, how embarrassing is that; they can’t even feud properly become they keep intermarrying with the neighbors and fighting the same battles for the same liege lords, but they refuse to speak to one another on holidays or at feasts
I just love how petty they are

there’s a theory that Rowan’s lover was Foss the Archer, the founder of the Fossoways, because he would shoot apples off the heads of women he admired. Sure it is half-sibling incest but so is Brandon of the Bloody Blade/Rose of Red Lake and there’s meta about them
Pertaining to this ridiculously lovely fanart by @palominojacoby
(Have one of Foss, as well)
Thank you for that theory! It would certainly create an even more powerful image for Rowan to turn her grief over lost love into a renewal of the symbol of that love. To feed love to the world where it had been denied herself for greed.
It also makes the origin story of the greenapple Fossoways even better. The turn from something corrupted back toward something closer to its ideal.
"My pardons, ser. I needed to make a small change to my sigil, lest I be mistaken for my dishonorable cousin." He showed them all his shield. The polished golden field remained the same, and the Fossoway apple, but this apple was green instead of red. "I fear I am still not ripe . . . but better green than wormy, eh?"
(The Hedge Knight)
Which leads to this tragic image:
Everywhere steel rang on steel. Raymun and his cousin were slashing at each other in front of the viewing stand, both afoot.
Their shields were splintered ruins, the green apple and the red both hacked to tinder.
No matter how good your apple, war doesn't care for idealism. It always destroys both sides to a degree.
Going back to Rowan, by the imagery of the weirwood tree, with its bright red leaves that look like bloody hands, and the history of blood sacrifices made to heart trees, it seems like she chose a better way to feed a tree: heartbreak turns into apples.
Arya grabs an apple from a tree sullied by the corpses hanged there. She eats it worms and all.
Robert thought this of Lyanna:
"She should be on a hill somewhere, under a fruit tree, with the sun and clouds above her and the rain to wash her clean." (AGOT, Eddard I)
I don't know. Maybe, in its own way, this image applies to the Starks. Walk through death, bury the pain and grow life from it, eventually.

She grew up knowing she was not an attractive child. She had seen the beauties of the Gardener court, and she did not think she compared. While her brothers spent time practicing with the Gardener children, she also spent time with other girls at court. While she did not think herself a great beauty, she did have a confidence to her and musical talent that helped her in making friends around her age. And once she had her younger sister, she easily took on the role of taking her sister with her and introducing her to others, wishing for her sister to make friends as well.
As she flowered and became a woman, though a little later than some of the other girls she knew, she found a certain beauty in herself, and a confidence in her worth. While she found an enjoyment in flirting with boys, she did know better than to truly test any of the waters. While she may have had a few secret kisses, she was sure never to go further, and in truth the boys she kissed did not seem to press for much more. Danelle likes to believe it was really down to the chivalry the Reach was known for, but it could have also been her brothers that kept men in check. It did mean she could be a bit of a tease with some of the boys, and she enjoyed the game of flirting, though she ensured she kept her virtue. She had hopes of marrying into the Gardener family, if her father could negotiate such, and she would not let rumors that she was promiscuous jeopardize that.
