rinharu headcanon incoming!!!!!!

(i have too many thoughts about these two and would like to share them with people who might appreciate them):

whenever i see photos/official illustrations like this of rin, i can't help but to think he's one of those good-looking, naturally charismatic people who also happen to be very photogenic and self-aware, i.e. they know their best angles and by god they will make sure EVERYBODY knows their best angles when it comes to selfies, group photos, the likes.

by contrast, haru is awkward when it comes to having his photo taken. and by awkward, i mean all he can offer most times is his soul-searching stare. if he's feeling generous, maybe a slight tilt of the head and the barest hint of a smile (like it physically pains him to curve his lips more than a metal ruler). an awkward peace sign, if he's feeling extra generous (he is me. he is us. he represents a lot of us that can't pose for shit in pictures).

these two clowns somehow end up taking on the world stage together, which can only mean they travel a lot together following the end of the franchise, right? we know rin is the type to take pictures of the places he visits, whether to send them to his loved ones back home or mail postcards or update his SNS. but haru, haru is canonically illiterate when it comes to technology. sure, he's an artist - he sees things with the keen eye only a person who can appreciate beauty (squints eyes at rei) might have, and he might take photos of sceneries that he finds breathtaking (waterfalls, fountains etc.)

but he is almost never the one to initiate taking photos of people. or of himself. or of him with people.

so i imagine a lot of haru and rin's travels going like this (read it like you're listening to an audio CD):

Just finish season 2 of Free!: Eternal Summer and...there's something on my mind.

Spoilers ahead!

While I can say season 2 in just as magical as season 1 because it develops other themes that hadn't been touched in the previous season like the last year for 3rd years students, the pursuit for a dream and what to do in the future, it also introduces new characters and a more-in-detph of Rin and Haru's pasts...There something that still bothering me since finishing episode 13: Haru and Rin's relationship.

And with this, I'm not gonna lie: I ship them. Like, damn, sorry, but they're the typical 'rivals to lovers' and 'childhood friends' that I like to watch on series...but the thing is that I don't see it in canon.

Rin's whole thing is kinda simple: He chose as a dream to be an olimpic professional swimmer to achieve the dream that his dad never could. He had a past childhood with Sousuke but they separated paths due to their different philosophy. Then he started Elementary or Junior High at Iwatobi, made friends with Makoto, Nagisa and especially with Haruka...then he moved to Australia, quit swimming because of hopelessness, then moved to Iwatobi again and reignited his passion for swimming because of the meaninful friendships he made by it (enphasis on Haru, because even HE HIMSELF make emphasis on that).

While, Haru's whole thing is that he had a childhood with Makoto, Nagisa and Rin (by the short time they spend together)...and while the whole first season recides heavely on RinHaru's relationship because of Rin's sorrow...I felt that Rin's presence on Haru's point of view was half-baked. Then, with season 2, I feel like TRULY RInHaru's whole dynamic is based on that rivarly that Rin created and... it's sooo one-sided!! like there is no reciprocity!!

Like, from Rin's perspective, Haru is a truly important person to him, to the point that EVEN Sousuke makes a point of it and spells it out to Haru!! But, from Haru's perspective, I feel like Rin does not make that much of an impact the same way that Haru for Rin has!! Like, the thing that shocks me the most is that, even after going to Australia for 2 days, share a bed, Rin introduced him to his home-stay family (who, by the way, did not hesitated to embarrased Rin on saying that he talked a lot about Haru when he was a kid) and by Rin's efforts, Haru finally discovered what his dream truly was...at that last moments at the final relay, when was Haru's time to show what was that that specifically made him love to be there...Makoto, Nagisa and Rei show up as his friends and team. They are one of the reasons of why Haru swims in the first place...while Rin never make an appareance not even once on that moment.

That scene completely shut me down the idea of Haru's reciprocity of feelings for Rin the way Rin feels for him. Like, after all that, when he finally explains what is his dream, his motives to it...his friends appear at his side except for Rin...for who Haru supposedly said before that he wanted to swim against...for who Haru gets inspired or motivated...who created, in the first place, the situation to Haru to discover his dream!!

Like...maybe it's just me that wanted to RinHaru be more canonical that it truly is...maybe i'm just getting started to the series and I haven't seen the important stuff yet...But either way, if that's how I see it is from the very beggining...what Rin is feeling about Haru, Haru does not share the same for Rin...or at least is not that of a big deal yet.

Also, I may be to delulu and obssess over rivals to lovers, but let's ignore that for a little while.

#14: the ship that always makes you smile

Hmm. I wonder. Yknow.. I can't seem to recall any that would.

Alright, seriously, there has not been another ship like rinharu. Honestly, I struggle to put it into words since it's mostly feelings.

This pairing altered my brain chemistry and rewired me. Literally defined my taste when it comes to ship. If it reminds me of rinharu, there is a high chance i'll ship it. It's a ship that's got it all. Just the dynamic is so addicting and fun and thrilling. There is not one moment when they're together that is not overloaded with feeling. They play off of each other so well. They're both opposites, but also more similar than they realize. They have fantastic chemistry, and they are both so passionate, but they can also be pretty soft with each other too. Their moments make the show. I mean, they are the "core-axis" of free! After all.

From the very beginning of their story together, it's always been so entertaining. I loved seeing how their relationship started, grew, and evolved. It was love at first sight (or I guess you could say it was actually love at first swim). Rin's determination was unwavering, and he kept trying until he finally smashed his way through Haru's walls and eventually won him over with his charm, all while being absolutely enamored by Haru himself. And he truly did shake up Haru's entire world. Haru was so sure the only thing he needed was to feel the water. Then, in comes this smiley and annoyingly persistent kid and shows him a sight he's never seen before, and makes him feel so many funny feelings.

They're both so taken with one another, even if they don't want to admit it. I love how Rin gushes about Haru at any chance he gets, and how Haru is constantly thinking about Rin whenever they're apart. And i mean, gosh he quit swimming because he thought he hurt Rin. He had that much of an impact on Haru. They both drive each other forward, improve one another, and becomes their best selves together. Their relationship certainly wasn't without its bumps along the way, but i think that just makes it more interesting.

Seriously, when it comes to these two, they could be doing anything, and they would still have me smiling. I will treasure them forever.

#16: a tiny detail in canon that you want more people to appreciate

Not sure if some of these really count as "tiny", but:

● I just genuinely love that whenever Haru has flashbacks of his childhood moments with Rin, the first thing he remembers/thinks about is his smile, and the scene is always tinted pink with cherry blossoms.

● Rin's friendship with Nagisa. He pretends to be aggravated by him, but he's got quite the soft spot for him too.

● How perceptive Nagisa truly is. He notices the small things about his friends and their behaviors. It's so sweet

● Haru's love for weird looking creatures, like northern stoplight loose-jaw kun. He would have loved sacabambaspis.

● Haru's hobby of wood carving. I would love one of his handcrafted iwatobi chan charms.

● Also one I learned about recently: Haru actually has double-jointed knees!

#25: a piece of advice for taking care of yourself in fandom spaces

Fandom, as fun as it is, unfortunately has its rotten side. You'll inevitably come across pointless discourse of any kind during your time in it. The best thing you can do is honestly just avoid engaging with it. Don't ruin your own happiness by starting arguments with people who simply won't listen. If they're constantly popping up on your feed, simply block them and keep enjoying your side of the fandom. Constantly being met with people being destructively negative about the things you enjoy will do nothing except bring you down. It is so much nicer to just be able to enjoy things. You don't have anything to prove to anyone, and you don't need to justify yourself for liking a certain character or a ship. Just post what you want in your own circle. Be free!

(That being said, there are actually interesting discussions one can have with people who are actually willing to listen and debate properly, and those can be good experiences too. I'm just talking about discourse like ship wars or arguments like: Rin Matsuoka is a toxic character, and you're problematic if you like him!!1!!11! and such)

Leaving Teeth Marks

Here at BadPosture studio, it’s always Rinharu propaganda hour. And by "propaganda," I mean reading canon material as plain proof that Rin and Haru are stupid about each other. While the content of the mooks are dreams the characters have, (which take place within the Future Fish AU), they’re nevertheless revealing of their feelings towards each other in the main story. All but the final mook can be read in sequence, which is to say they could reasonably follow the same chronology. The Rin/Haru story is reflective of kid Rin’s perspective, whereas the rest of the mooks depict him in a way closer to his behaviour as a teenager. Despite the disparity between Rin’s attitude towards Haru in mooks 4 and 5, one thing remains the same: Rin wants a bite of Haru.

So…what does this mean? A literal reading is obvious. I mean, really, how much more intimate can a person get than acquainting their mouth with the crook of someone else’s neck? To gain half-fish powers in mook 5, Rin could have drawn blood from virtually anywhere on Haru’s body, but he opts to stick his head in between the bars of the cell to bite down on Haru’s neck. In mook 4, when Nagisa asks Rin what he’d do if he were to catch Haru, he says he’d have “a taste.” Then he elaborates, saying, “That merman is my prey. One of these days, I’ll catch him by his tail and make him mine.”

…Half-fish or not…saying you want to make a person yours? Seriously, if Rin didn’t mean it that way, then why does he say it so sexy? …I’m losing focus here!

The emotional climax of mook 5 is when Haru asks Rin why he’s so determined to show him sights he’s never seen before, and Rin tells him it’s because he wants to share the things he loves with someone else—perhaps because half-fish Haru likely never had those experiences before, or perhaps because Rin didn’t want Haru to resign to simply existing and nothing more. By the end of the story, these feelings are obviously reciprocated, with Haru promising to share sights of his own. Rin likely recruited Haru for their elementary school relay with the same goal in mind—here was someone amazing he wanted to share experiences with. So, whether we read the biting thematically or literally, Rin wants to leave his mark on Haru. In both the main story and mook 5, it was love at first sight for Rin, which is to say that he’s been Haru’s since the day they met.

Taking Haru by the tail and making him his is not unlike Rin initiating the kabedon in season 1 and telling Haru to swim for him. The operative words “mine” and “for” are decidedly much more proprietary than swimming/sharing a dream with Haru. And this is because Rin’s fixation on Haru was perverted into something much more desperate and selfish as he got older. After all, he didn’t quit swimming as a kid because he lost to Haru after being abroad for a year, he quit because despite their separation Haru was able to move on and continue improving while Rin wasn’t. Believing that the effect Haru had on him was one-sided—that Haru didn’t need him and faired no better or worse whether he was around or not—made Rin want to take away the power Haru had over him and use it against him instead.

Of course, Rin had it right the first time. Haru does feel the same way and would, in fact, welcome Rin to make himself at home in the crook of his neck. Incidentally, every time they’ve hugged it out, Rin has propped his chin on the same shoulder he dreamt of sinking his teeth into. Maybe it isn’t such unfamiliar territory after all. Maybe it’s exactly where he belongs.

the way i could say free! but i won’t because that’s too easy

show - bluey, very cute show that i’ve rewatched countless times now and will continue to recommend to others until the day i die (get some tissues ready sleepytime and baby race)

movie - liz and the blue bird, i wrote a paper on the movie back in high school and lowkey mizore and nozomi’s relationship reminds me of my friend and i (she also played the oboe while i played flute)

book - this is how you lose the time war, had to read it for a class last semester and found it to be such an interesting story that i just had to read it again on my own

I have just few considerations and ramblings here about the mix. This started as a simple and self-indulgent rinharu playlist mainly for setting a mood while I read fanfics because I can't do anything without music. But, two very important people I met here encouraged me to submit it for Sakurathon (@museaway and @dragon-of-timeless-blue, thank you guys so much for the inspiration! ❀).

And since that happened, the playlist became something more, I guess? Now, it's kinda of a narrative of how I imagined Rin and Haru's relationship would developt over the years based pretty much on the canon material we have (with my own perceptions of them to fill the holes). I'm not gonna get into too much detail because the mix speaks for itself (I hope), but Rin and Haru have always been drawn to each other, that's just a fact, and getting into the romance aspect, I think they're the type of people that have trouble realizing what they feel, then suddenly something drives them apart and a lot of emotions are felt and they have miscommunication problems often but then they just blossom (if you catch my drift) and finally get comfortable with one another and their new relationship.

With that being said, with you have that option on Spotify, I highly recommend listening to the songs sequentially, at least at first. I got really into putting this playlist together so I'm pretty proud of it and I hope you guys like (at least some of) the songs!

THE PEOPLE!! like, genuinely, today the fandom is not even half as big as it was at its peak, but the ones who have stayed are the coolest and most talented people one can find!!

It might sound weird, but I really love how small the fandom is (compared to when the anime was at its peak), ik it kinda feels like a neighborhood that posts the same posts again and again and we throw love at each other with every new thing that is posted or created (⁠ ⁠◜⁠‿⁠◝⁠ ⁠)⁠♡

THE EVENTS!!! and this is something that I want to thank directly to you, Muse ♡⁠(⁠Ӧ⁠ｖ⁠Ӧ⁠｡⁠), all the rinharu events that you have participated in organizing are incredible and I think they maintain one of the most beautiful aspects of what fandom is truly about.

7. your favorite tropes to read/write/draw

I love everything that has to do with AUs (plus if they are fantasy AUs or other sports), imagining different situations while maintaining the essence of the dynamics is something that I love to explore in reading, the details, references and adaptations of elements is incredibly interesting and fun for me!! (⁠人⁠*⁠´⁠∀⁠｀⁠)⁠｡⁠*ﾟ⁠+

16. a tiny detail in canon that you want more people to appreciate

It may not count as small (because it literally defines one of the key aspects of the series) but, the weight of Haruka's Grandmother impact on his life, like, leaving aside the fact that her words are what define part of his philosophy of life, I feel that it is due to her same influence that Haru takes sayings to heart (if you sneeze it means someone is thinking about you) and that his life follows the calm style of old Japan

How really smart Rin is, like, the guy was able to get into an exchange program to Australia (which I guess is hard to do even more if you're just entering high school), the boy could balance a workout and sports diet and still doing really good un school, I don't remember if it's canon or not that he has an athletic scholarship, but in any case he would surely have one and he works hard to keep it! I feel like it's something that maybe goes overboard sometimes.

9. What fic meant the most to you to write?

The first fic I've ever posted for RinHaru, hands down. I wrote this high on the RinHaru feels I got from watching Free! and at first, I was a little bummed out that the show didn't make them outright canon. But as I worked on this fic, writing out whatever it is I think should have happened on the show (lol) helped me come to terms with that and I actually learned to appreciate that we're given the liberty to choose how they'd end up together. As such, I've come to really love writing fanfiction thanks to the realisation that we as shippers are bestowed with the freedom (and power 😌) to decide how we want that magical moment of them getting together to finally happen 💖✨

TLDR this was the work that made me realise how much fun I could have with fanfiction, and I've been hooked on this hobby ever since!

11. What fic was the most satisfying to finish writing?

This was a tough one since the feeling of finishing a fic is always satisfying, but if I had to choose one... Dear Diary. It was based on the first prompt I chose for make a splash! and I felt kinda pressure, to be frank. I mean, I got an AO3 account for this event! The least I could do was to contribute at least something decently readable. The prompt caught my eye since I wanted to write something lighthearted and fun, but the thing about this prompt is that it also very much reminds me of this legendary fandom classic by sauntering_down. I could only ever dream of making something half as funny as that 🙈 The pressure I was giving myself made me force words out in a feeble attempt to make it work initially, thus my first draft was an unreadable mess. By the grace of the fanfiction gods and my kind beta reader @declawedwildcat, I managed to pivot and rewrite the entire thing, so it was such a relief that the prompt did not go to waste after the initial struggle I had with Nitori's POV.

12. What fic was the most difficult to write? Did you finish it?

My entry for Soumako Week since I was challenging myself to use one prompt from each day of the week. I planned to make "drabbles" every day that would connect to make a coherent story, but they turned out to be much longer than just drabbles 😂 I struggled with the plot for some time, and while the end result got me thinking of what could've been (not my best work, I'm afraid), I'm still so glad I somehow managed to finish it. Even though it was difficult I did enjoy learning from the process and managed to have fun with the event, so I would love to repeat a challenge like that for another ship week someday. Seeing how I could connect prompts to weave them into stories is too much fun!

Wangxian (Lan Wangji x Wei Wuxian) - Listen, it's not one of the most popular popular ships on ao3 for nothing (67k+ works, wow!). I'm a sucker for these soulmate type ships and with these two you get like, ShB levels of emotional damage while going through it. AND LWJ'S SMILE! 3. RinHaru - I'm pretty much throwing a dart at the dartboard to pick the last one but during the rein of the swimming boys, I was pretty avid RinHaru fan. I've literally not interacted with the Free fandom in years tho, I've graduated the sports anime bl and moved on to sword bl (danmei) lol.

As a cute little bonus I'll mention that I'm currently very into Canon x OC stuff! Like any ffxiv npc(s) x WoL or stuff like that! You'll get stuff catered directly to you (but you sadly have to cook your own stuff).

First ever ship: Augggghhh my memory is so bad uhhhh maybe Kyoraku x Ukitake? Bleach was like, my 3rd anime ever and I instantly fell in love with their dynamic. Old man yaoi real... (no we do not talk about what happens later in the story I'm living in denial)

#7: what character did you begin to hate not because of canon but because of how the fandom acts about them?

i've never... hated him (hate is so strong) but i did dislike this character for a while because of how some parts of the fandom insert him in places he shouldn't be. this probably won't come as a surprise to rinharu fans, but it's makoto.

the reason is because when i first started exploring fan-made rinharu content years ago, i would almost always see makoharu fans (not all of course!) commenting on these posts, bashing rin and/or the rinharu ship. and it's fine if you don't subscribe to rinharu or dislike rin but... don't comment on posts that are for rinharu/rin fans???? i was much younger then and because rin is like, my kinnie (HAHAHA i'm cringing as i type this), it did hurt me quite a bit to see people shitting on him.

but now that i'm much older, it doesn't bother me (even tho i STILL see such hate comments till this day on rinharu tiktok or youtube videos. can you believe it?!)

#19: you're mad/ashamed/horrified you actually kind of like...

certain dead dove fics, like those about body horror (there are not enough free! body horror fics!!!!!) or grotesque murder by like, those yandere!type characters (idk man i just find them really interesting). or even infidelity and abusive partner type fics, which is ironic as hell, because i am someone who is extremely against infidelity, and i'm a domestic abuse survivor. but i see it as taking back my power by reading these fics; by enjoying content and reading about things that used to hurt me, that have no power over me anymore. :-)

Listen man, MakoHaru was so fucking pure. Some of the best friends-to-lovers ever created. I should have been losing my mind from RinHaru's impeccable unresolved-exes vibes but MakoHaru ended up drowning all of that out for me. How that anime did all of the gay things without explicitly stating the obvious was some serious witchcraft. Can't believe the series happened in 2013 and I haven't rewatched it since, I'm a criminal.

*I imagine a fully canonical Boys' Love anime in 2013 would not have gotten half the budget or a quarter of the exposure that Free needed to succeed. Truly walked so that Yuri on Ice could run, imo.
